For decades now, Newquay has been considered a hub for board sports. Not only was it home to the first shop in the UK to sell skateboards, it has been home to a lot of very talented surfers and skateboarders.

We were blessed with wooden waves skatepark and lucky enough not only to have it upgraded to concrete waves by the amazing Maverick skateparks crew, but even an extension to concrete waves making it one of the best outdoor skateparks in the UK.

As if that wasn't enough, Maverick recently came back to Newquay to continue their work on Newquay with an incredible pump track just behind the school in Nansledan.

We were kindly invited to take part in the opening jam last month so went along and had an absolute blast! We highly recommend that you check it out if you haven't already.

TR7 Skate X Spit & Sawdust trip 2024

This trip was a great opportunity to showcase our some of our team riders, but also to produce a brand new 'Park Check' video for our YouTube channel.

We set out to film a video showing the unique features of this welsh skatepark. We expected good vibes and a fun skatepark, but little did we know, we were in for an epic ride that surpassed all expectations.

Loaded up with boards, cameras, and sleeping bags, we hit the road in the trusty TR7 wagon, ready to conquer the concrete jungle. But the real adventure began when we arrived.

Amidst the thrills and spills, one moment stood out – watching Jak Foster survive on basically nothing but Branston pickle and crackers for the entire weekend!

But it wasn't just about the skateboarding. What made this trip special was the warm welcome we received at the skatepark. From the moment we rolled in, we felt like part of the family. And let's not forget about the food – fuelling our sessions with their mouthwatering delicacies was a massive bonus.

Of course, no adventure is complete without its challenges. Mother Nature decided to throw us a curveball with non-stop rain, putting a damper on our plans for street skating. But hey, when life gives you rain, you hit the indoor park even harder!

Despite the weather woes, this trip brought us closer together as a team, as these trips always do! Through rain or shine, we rallied, laughed, and skated our hearts out, forging bonds that transcend the concrete jungle.

So, to all you fellow skaters out there, whether you're planning your next park pilgrimage or just dreaming of dropping in, remember this: it's not just about the tricks you land or the spots you skate – it's about the journey, the camaraderie, and the shared passion that unites us all.

We highly recommend a visit to this skatepark, wether you fancy yourself as a street skater, transition ripper, beginner or advanced, this place has you covered.

TR7 Skate X California trip 2023

It's that time of year again: rain, wind & maybe even a bit of snow! If you live in Cornwall and don't drive, you're gonna have a tough time enjoying skateboarding.

Packed into our trusty TR7 wagon, we embarked on a 9-day journey to the heartland of skateboarding, California.

During this trip, we managed to hit up 8 different skateparks, some incredible street spots, a bunch of different waves and of course, the famous American thrift stores & fast food joints.

As always on a TR7 trip, we try to hit skateparks to start each day of skateboarding before venturing out to some rougher spots to stack the real clips. This time, we lucked out staying beachside in Encinitas, enjoying dolphin greetings during our morning coffee or, in Shay Stone's case, a dip and rip at 6am to start almost everyday! 🌊🛹🐬

The 8 different skateparks we visited were:

We thoroughly enjoyed visiting these concrete works of art and highly recommend that you visit them if you ever have the chance. Especially Washington St. D.I.Y.... The term ¨ Videos and photos don't do it justice ¨ gets thrown around a lot nowadays but this place is the epitome of that term.

Upon returning home, I finally decided to start going through all of the footage & photos and pulled out all of our favourite skatepark clips to bring you this edit -

Where are you from and how long have you been doing art?

I’m from a TINY village called Hadlow Down where there’s nothing but a pub - not even a bus or a corner shop lol. (It’s in East Sussex near Brighton.)

I’ve always loved doing art since I was a kid, like I’ve always been into sketching and painting and would love getting new art supplies for Christmas. It’s always been my ‘thing’ I guess. I discovered digital art when I was like 19 I think - so that’s around 5 years ago.

What style best describes you?

Tricky question - I can visualise it but let’s see how I do at putting it in words haha! It’s obviously digital illustration, and usually my drawings consist of a person/people in a place - for example, a girl in a pool or a couple sat on a wall. I like focusing on my colour palettes to evoke an emotion (I know that sounds real GCSE art but it’s true!) Like, using warm shades of pink and orange for a cosy, happy piece of art. Or deep purples and pinks for a more melancholy evening vibe. I like making art that makes me feel something, and makes you wonder about the story behind the scene. I guess my style is quite ‘girly’, too.

Did you study? Where?

Nope. I didn’t fancy uni, I just don’t think its my thing. I also didn’t have anything in particular that I wanted to study. I wouldn’t want to study art because I think it would take out the enjoyment and freedom of it for me.

What inspires you to do art?

So many things! A conversation, a person, a house I drive past, a shape I can see in the clouds. A massive one is other people’s art - I definitely take a lot of inspiration from other art I see everywhere.

What inspired you to do the newest Concrete Waves deck?

To be honest, I owe the idea to Kai! (My boyfriend.) He’s a very creatively minded person and he comes up with a lot of good ideas for my art. He was like “it’s gotta be concrete waves”, and I immediately knew that had to be it. I only recently moved to Newquay, so I loved the challenge of drawing this completely new place and adding some funky made-up elements to it. It was definitely a fun challenge drawing the TR7 skaters too, and creating this scene where everyone’s doing different tricks.

Anything else you want to share with us?

Where are you from and how long have you been doing art?

im originally from southampton and ive been doing art since the 70s! I used to just scribble at first and cut out pictures i liked from magazines and catalogues, after that i started drawing dinosaurs and insects, caterpillars and monsters.

What style best describes you?

er, i think my style is original, different to everything else i hope. I like to see what everyone else is doing then do the exact opposite! I like raw and primitive stuff, things that just get the point across rather than being super polished, i like to use humour and bright colours too.

Did you study? Where?

i studied art in southampton and got thrown off by degree course for being too disruptive!

What inspires you to do art?

i get inspiration from stuff i grew up with i guess, 80s skate art, horror movies, comics, anything thats weird or different or viewed as trash or stupid, old toys, stuff like that. I like how art can really get people hyped or happy or angry, how it can really bring out emotions.

What inspired you to design the "TR7 Larry the Lobster"?

i did the lobster graphic because i wanted to create something new thats never been done, but with influences from the place we live. I like the stuff companies like Blast and Heroin do which, as well as skulls, often use bright colours and positivity, just cool fun stuff to get people stoked! Skulls are cool, i could draw them all day, but i wanted something completely different. Plus im a big fan of TR7 and the vibe they bring to the scene so i wanted something to kinda express that positive attitude. ❤

THE FIRST SKATER OWNED ZINE! By Ed Syder

Last year, I had a guy called Ed Syder (@edsyder ) reach out to me to get permission to do a cartoon style drawing of me and @hairy_wheel in the shop, followed by a handful of questions about TR7, and now it’s become the first UK Skater Owned Zine. 🤯
To start with, I am beyond stoked that after almost 3 years of creating the first TR7 deck design, we have amazing people reaching out to us, supporting what we are trying to achieve and helping us spread the love!
Newquay is a small town in the grand scheme of things so it really motivates us to continue working hard when we get recognition from all over the country! It truly is an honour that Ed was kind enough to think of us when he decided to make his ¨skater owned¨ magazine as we are very proud to be the only skater owned store in the area. It gave us the chance to tell our story to people not only across the UK but even the US!

Its a trip for me to read through this magazine and see our 2 page spread in there alongside 14 of the greatest shops in the UK, many of which I have looked up and drawn inspiration from since we began. I really enjoyed reading the other shop interviews, some amazing stories and great insight into what’s going on with UK skate scenes and I hope to meet all of those involved in the future once we are allowed to be sociable again…..
I was fortunate enough to grow up on an island with 5 skater owned stores so I have seen first hand how much difference they make. When I first moved to Newquay I felt, almost straight away, that it was needed in this town!
Skateboarding is becoming more and more popular by the second meaning that it is now more important than ever to support the skater owned stores. Skateboarding belongs to skateboarders, simple as that.

FLEUR GREENFIELD 'DE MORT'

Where are you from and how long have you been doing art?

I was born in West Sussex and grew up in small village. I have been obsessed with drawing for as long as I can remember! From an early age it was apparent that art would be the main drive in my life when it came to school classes and hobbies.

What style best describes you?

I would say that now my style is mostly illustrative and almost always digital. I think this comes from being surrounded by a heavy surf and skate culture here in Cornwall, where there are lot of vibrant and graphic brands. When I paint on canvas and fabric however, my style is very Pop Art with a twist of Renaissance within the composition of the characters. I tend to drift between digital illustration and painting depending on my environment and what time I have to create something alongside working a day job in retail.

Did you study? Where?

Yes I studied Surface Design at The University of The Arts London. It was an amazing course focusing on Screen Printing and commercial design. I learnt a great deal about how to create repeat patterns and how you can combine art with design and apply that to products. It was an extremely broad and versatile course covering everything from graphic to interior design, photography and illustration. I really enjoyed my time there.

What inspires you to do art?

I have always loved vintage fashion illustrations, pop art and religious iconography. I remember flicking through art books and being mesmerised by the beauty of Botticelli, yet at the same time provoked by the realness and consumer culture of Warhol. I love the way classical painters capture a narrative so directly, and how the great modern artists leave room for questioning within their concepts.

What inspired you to design the "TR7 Baby Jesus"?

Well it's a playful take on religious iconography and I wanted to create something that was bold with strong Cornish roots, so why not Jesus holding a pasty right?! TR7 Skate is a local Cornish brand so I chose a colour palette that represented Kernow, and a leopard background that reflected my own style.

Welcome to this new section of our blog, where you can meet the artists that created our deck designs, where are they from, what inspires them to create, how they came up with the idea of the winning design and more!

We hope you enjoy reading this as much as we did!

ROBERT MALTBY

Where are you from and how long have you been doing art?

I was born and raised in the Manchester area, and have been interested in art from a young age. I have spent my formative years drawing weird creatures and being interested in comic art and the surreal.

What style best describes you?

I got interested in portrait painting at about age 17, and have made that a central focus of my practice, combined with a love for the surreal. I have always seen my art as an exploration into creating things that I think should exist even if they don't.

Did you study? Where?

I studied art at the Manchester School of Art, where I did my foundation degree and began doing a BA in Interactive Arts, when I was forced to leave my degree after being incapacitated by a brain injury. I used art throughout the first half of my twenties both as a means of understanding the world around me and as a therapeutic method, and as such have created a more philosophical outlook that I have tried to bring out in my art.

I was able to return to university in 2013, to complete a degree in Illustration and Animation, again at the Manchester School of Art. On my degree I developed an interest in self publishing and outsider art, developing an interest in artists such as Henrick Drescher and Henry Darger, whose ideas I have tried to implement into my later works. I consider art to be a primary impulse, through which I have tried to create a raw interpretation of subconscious imagery.

How was the lockdown for you?

Throughout lockdown, I have been a key worker, and have been trying to return to art as a therapeutic tool, creating artistic diaries as well as sculptures and paintings to work through the complicated feelings of such unprecedented times.

What inspires you to do art?

Currently, my artistic inspirations include Francisco Goya, Heironymous Bosch, and William Blake; as well as a fascination with astrology and tarot.

What inspired you to design the "TR7 Trippy Seal"?

My inspiration for this piece was an extrapolation from the initial inspiration for the idea of the mermaid, coming from the maritime idea that the manatee was actually a mermaid. Obviously it veered somewhat away from the baseline of that inspiration, but I tend to take any inspiration as little more than a jumping off point! I wanted to include something based off British, and specifically Cornish wildlife, so a seal seemed apropos for this concept.

Feel-Good Skateboard Parts To Get You Through The Last Month Of 2020

This year has been a total rollercoaster to say the least, but its nearly over! We are praying for an amazing 2021 to make up for this year, but to keep you entertained until then, here are 15 of our all time favourite video parts!

These video parts may not be the most technical/gnarly sections but for one reason or another, we love the way that they are put together because they make us want to go out and skate, which is what skate videos are supposed to do!

So if you are feeling overwhelmed, exhausted, disheartened or just straight fed up, put the kettle on, sit down with your cuppa and check out these vids!

Who knows, maybe all you needed was some great skateboarding videos to cheer you up!

First and foremost, we have Bastien Salabanzi´s part from the Flip video ¨Really Sorry¨ Salabanzi burst onto the scene after making a heavy appearance in Flips first big video titled ¨sorry ¨ at just 17 years of age.

He has always had one of the best styles in our opinion and in this part he doesn’t hold back, with potentially the best switch heel flip ever done as the final trick. Not to mention the fact that he is skating to a fun Black Eyed Peas song.. Check it! -

Second on the list would have to go to the godfather of pushing skateboarding, Danny Way. Danny, like other legendary skaters from his era, was also a professional snowboarder at the height of his career in skateboarding and he was the first to really push ´mega skating`. In this absolutely incredible part he managed to break 2 world records, the longest gap and highest air… In the same run.. this just shows how much of a mad man he is and no matter how many times you watch this part, it will still blow your mind and he even got a few street clips in there too for good measure! -

Third up is ledge wizard Mike Mo Capaldi. The reason this particular part gets us hyped is because he wasn’t afraid to stick to the type of skating he was good at, which is clearly ledges/mannys/flip tricks. The full length video that this part is from ¨fully flared¨ went on to be one of the most influential videos of its time and Mike Mo´s part is the first one, right after the intro. Not to mention the fact that this video was released almost 15 years ago and to this day we have never seen anyone do the trick which he finishes this part with! -

Next up we have Cairo Foster´s part in ¨the reason¨. This video was released back in 1999 and was and is a BIG deal for skaters from that era. The song he skates to really sets the mood and he put together a great all-round part, with rails, gaps, hubbas and some groundbreaking/mindblowing nollie manoeuvres which still hold weight even today! -

We feel pretty silly for leaving this one until number 5 but this guy is the king of style in street skateboarding and he’s your favourite skaters favourite skater so if you haven’t seen this part already, educate yourself! Tom Penny was and still is one of the biggest names in skateboarding, originally from oxford he moved to the states at a young age and started blowing minds over there from the day he landed in California. He makes everything look easy and stylish and is famous for keeping himself to himself and letting his skills do his talking. Check this part and then watch all his other parts if you haven’t already!

Taking you back 22 years, next up we have Chad Muska. This part begins with him just cruising around on his board, which is a nice change from the parts that go straight into all the big moves within seconds and once the tune (which he made for the part) picks up a bit he really starts to blow minds. Bare in mind 22 years ago hitting double kink rails wasn’t normal like it seems to be nowadays so this video part really upped the standard of street skating for the years that followed and Chad will always be known as one of the original street skaters. He wasn’t afraid to dress how he wanted, carry a boombox around on his shoulder and wear a backpack during skating and we can all learn a thing or two from that. Stop trying to copy others and do you! Thats what skateboarding is all about!

This next one is someone who you probably expected to be on this list, but not because of this part. Like him or hate him, Nyjah Huston is and will always be one of the greatest street skateboarders to ever live. He wins almost all of the competitions he enters and when he’s not doing that, he’s out filming some of the heaviest street parts that you will ever see. This particular part is the one that stands out to us the most because he was only about 8-9 at the time and he was already skating like an adult, hucking down stairs and jumping on big rails. It was clear that he was going to have a fruitful career from an early age and all that he has done since this part is push himself harder and harder every year! -

Another young ripper was the well known Ryan Sheckler. Unfortunately he became more famous for his TV shows and other things but this video part in ¨almost round 3¨ always gets us super hyped. Sheckler was making big moves for his age, much like Nyjah and he made kids across the world want to grow out their hair and jump off the biggest roof they could find. Skating to a classic tune by the cure, this video came out 16 years ago and it is still a very enjoyable full length video to watch-

We can’t mention ¨almost round 3¨ without also bringing up one of the most famous bearded individuals that ever set foot on a skateboard- Chris Haslam. This man is one of our all time favourites to watch because he makes everything look so fun. You watch one of his parts and constantly think to yourself ¨why didn’t I think of trying that¨. He is a master of mixing fun with technical/gnarly/groundbreaking skateboard moves and this video is no exception!

Speaking of making skateboarding look fun, we can’t NOT mention the legend that is Louie Barletta. Enjoi´s full length video ¨bag of suck¨ is one of the most unique videos of all time, mixing creative skateboarding with creative filming, fun music and a feel-good vibe throughout! The part that has always stood out to us most is Louies. He dresses like your grandad and does tricks that nobody else has even thought of trying and always has a smile on his face, what more could you ask for? -

Andrew Reynolds, A.K.A ¨The boss¨ is very well known and respected in the skateboard world, as he was one of the first to really push the limits, jumping down some really big stuff and looking great while doing it, all whilst running what became one of the biggest brands in skateboarding, ¨Baker¨ He has put out some of the most intense parts and heavily influenced some of todays big names, such as Chris Joslin. This part in particular stands out to us the most because it was filmed when he was going through a lot of issues with drugs and alcohol, but he still managed to go out and get these incredible clips for us all to enjoy for the years that followed it. Once you watch it, go check out his ¨stay gold¨ part which was filmed years later once he decided to go sober and start really looking after his body in able to get more clips! -

Up next we have one of Harrys personal favourites- David Gravette. David is the perfect example of what we refer to as an ATV. (all terrain vehicle) he charges on transition and isn’t afraid to hit some of the scariest looking rails but that doesn’t stop him from also being super creative and approaching each spot he skates in a way that nobody else will. Gravette gets inspired by watching BMX videos instead of skate videos and that probably what makes him so unique. Check how easily he grinds the rail at the end of this part! -

You can’t do a list of feel good parts without mention the Cobra. Chris Cole has put out a lot of videos over his career and the thing that we have noticed particularly with him, is that he seems to do completely different tricks in every single part. He is great at all aspects of skating and seems to have no limit with the amount of different tricks he is capable of doing. This is our favourite Cole part but every video part of his is legendary! -

You already know this next one is going to be a feel-good part before the skating begins.. Jimmy Carlin was well known at the peak of his career for having one of the best hard flips/fakie hard flips in the game but you never see a jimmy carlin part without him messing around and having fun also. He is a weirdo and he doesn’t seem to care if people know that or not, making him a one of a kind dude! check it! -

To finish off strong, here is one of the best video parts we have ever seen- Justin ¨Figgy¨ Figueroa. This guy has been on the scene for a long time, growing up alongside tony hawks son riley, Figgy has made a fair few appearances in his time but this video part in particular is the most insane. Throughout the part he does so many tricks which are do or die tricks and puts together some really creative runs with gnarly rail tricks. His part isn’t available on youtube but the full length video which it appears in is, and it is in our opinion one of the greatest full length videos of all time.
