I've renewed some listings that were not active so those are available again. I'm mostly excited about adding some new paintings which once I get them photographed I will add them to my store.

This new listing is a birds nest. Inspiration for this painting came from an old bird's nest that my children found in the front yard several years ago and I keep in my home as decoration. Once in a while we find eggs that have dropped out of the trees and broke and we'll add them nest.

Bird's Nest with Eggs

Image Size: 4x6 inches

Mat Size: 8x10 inches (Ready for a standard size frame.)

Watercolor on Paper

Enter my Etsy Store here!

Tracee Murphy Watercolors on Facebook ~ Become a Fan!

Enjoyed the Luncheon Today

We had a really nice luncheon today at the home of one of our member's of the Watercolor Society of South Texas. May is our last month of the year for us until we start up again in September. This is also when we install our officers for the next year. I will be retaining my position on the board as Treasurer. This is only my third year as a member and second year on the board. I've really enjoyed getting to know a really neat group of people.

If you really want to get involved in the arts in your community joining your local societies and/or art leagues is one way to stay connected and up to date with what's going on in your area. It can be a daunting task if you don't know what supplies you need to get started. I'll be sharing with you what I've learned as a watercolor artist and what supplies I use. In the course of several days I'll be talking about paints, paper, brushes, and palettes as well as other materials and miscellaneous items to have on hand.

I will be honest with you and tell you upfront that I don't have a lot of experience with a variety of paints and brushes because I've enjoyed what I started with and I haven't strayed too far away from them. Supplies can get expensive quick so I have to keep myself from buying too many of everything, although it can be hard!

As you grow as an artist you will soon find what works for you. Eventually, through experimentation your supplies will become your personal choice as it should be with every artist. What works for one artist may not work for another.

One more thing, the suggested supplies can be found at any Hobby Lobby store or online store such as CheapJoes.com, DickBlick.com, Jerry's Artarama; you can do your own search online and price comparison, but I've purchased from these three before and know they are very reputable.

Tip #1--Don't buy the cheapest supplies! You get what you pay for and you will be frustrated with your work if you go the cheap route. However, buy the best that you can afford. Any artist/instructor will tell you this and it's the first lesson everyone should learn.

Paint--There are student grade and professional grade paints. If you can't afford the professional grade there are a couple of student grade paint brands that are acceptable. Paints come in tubes, pans, pencils, and other forms. My preference is tube paints and this is what I will be discussing.

If you want to go with a student grade I suggest using either Grumbracher Academy or Winsor & Newton Cotman brands. I believe these brands contain more pigment than filler and are the best quality for student grade. It's what I used when I started out.

I prefer using Terry Madden's line of tube paints. I've always been a big fan of his work and his products. I haven't tried many brands previously, but these paints are what I've chosen to paint with because of their vibrant colors and excellent quality, not to mention they are easy on the pocketbook. Another brand that I like are American Journey by Cheap Joes. I don't have a full palette of his colors, but I have used a few and I have witnessed through my artist friends who use them the vibrant colors that are produced with these paints. I think you'll be very happy with either one you choose, but my personal reccomendation would be to use Terry Madden's--available at Hobby Lobby or http://www.terrymadden.com/.

Here are some links of watercolor paints from online supply stores:
Terry Madden Watercolor Paints
Watercolor Paints at Cheap Joe's
Watercolor Paints at Blicks
Daniel Smith Watercolors

Next topic will be about watercolor papers. These are four pieces I did to prepare for this project. These "paintings" were done on Stonehenge Printmaking Paper. You can purchase this paper through Cheap Joe's. I'll provide links at the end of this posting.

Supplies Used:
~Stonehenge Printmaking Paper
~Matte Medium
~Golden Fluid Acrylics
~Paint Brushes (Hake)
~Gather materials you can use to create texture (i.e.--saran wrap, bubblewrap, stamps, wax paper, cheesecloth, cotton gauze, rubbing alcohol, etc., etc.)

Process:
Prepare your paper surface with the matte medium. I used full strength and two layers, second layer lay down after the first dries. Apparently you can dilute the matte medium with water, but I did not find this out until today.

Pick a triad of colors and only use the three colors to lay down on your paper. Before anything dries use whatever you have set aside for texture and have it. Experiment with many different items. Create several pieces for your collage. You will save one for your "base painting" and the other ones for cutting, pasting, and layering in for your collage.

I'll post a picture of my final collage as soon as I've finished it. I have yet to figure out how I'm going to use my pieces. I'm still learning this collage stuff, but I find it very interesting.

Links:
Stonehenge Paper at Cheap Joe's
Golden Fluid Acrylics at Cheap Joe's
Da Vinci Fluid Acrylics at Cheap Joe's

I was informed today that Golden has increase their prices and Da Vinci is cheaper and work just as great. Your preference is up to you. I'm new to fluid acrylics so I have nothing to compare to, but I'm all for saving a few bucks. The supplies add up quick.

I take art classes from Pam Stanley. If you live in Corpus Christi and you are interested in art classes here is a link with some information. Classes are ending for the year, but will begin again in September.

http://www.wsstonline.com/workshops.html

This piece I did using the Stonehenge Paper, but instead of Acrylics I used my watercolors. Oh, and I was out of matte medium so it was done w/o preparing the paper. I will try and seal it with matte medium now that the paint is dry. I'll let you know how it goes.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/traceemurphy/3425160264/ Click on the link to view.

Beachscape ~ Watercolor Art

Here's another one of my beachscape paintings available for purchase in my Etsy store. I love laying down the paint and letting the colors mingle and work their majic. Sometimes they turn out the way I want and sometimes a total disaster and a redo is the only option, but most the time they turn out to be a beautiful blend of colors!

In this painting the sky is the main subject and sets the mood/tone for the whole painting. For me it looks to be the beginning of dusk when the sun just has a couple hours left to shine before it's time to light up the other side of the world.

The colors I used for the sky were a mixture of cerruleun and pthalo blue, perm rose, and a water mix of indian yellow. The perm rose and blues softly blended to create a soft violet color in the sky as well. This wasn't mixed on my palette, but came about as they mingled onto the wet paper. I used a wet-on-wet technique for the sky. This means I wet the sky area first with clean water before laying down the paint and used a watery mixture of paint when applied to the paper. I then used a little tissue to lift out some paint to form the small clouds.

Onece the sky was dry I moved onto the water and sand using the same colors so that the sky colors repeat and reflect onto the sand.

Country Landscape II ~ Watercolor Art by Tracee Murphy

This is similar to the one I listed yesterday. This is a sweet country landscape. Spring is here, the wildflowers and trees are blooming. Down here in Texas I've noticed the bluebonnets are beginning to spring up too!

I also have a similiar painting that will pair very nicely with this one. They are both the same size and colors, but a different landscape. The second painting will be listed in my shop tomorrow. These come with a mat and are ready to pop into any standard size 8 x 10 inch frame!

Country Landscape
Image Size: 4 x 6 inches
Mat Size: 8 x 10 inches
Watercolor On Paper

My Etsy Store; Etsy Store ID: traceemurphy

New work to share ~ Watercolor Art by Tracee Murphy

Living on the coast offers boundless inspiration for my paintings. We got together and shared a booth at the Festival of the Arts in Corpus Christi. We sold our work for $20 each and it was a great way to make some extra cash. It was a very successful event for all who participated and we all had a good time!

This week I will be listing what I have left in my Etsy Store. I had just sat down at the computer to take a break from cleaning house all morning and before going out to do some last minute Christmas shopping and I noticed in my email's inbox I had several Etsy email notifiers. I anxiously scanned through them and a couple were from people letting me know I was on the frontpage.

I sat down just in time to catch it live on the frontpage. The frontpage treasuries change every hour so it's hard to actually get to see it unless you just so happen to be sitting at the computer. I was able to take a screenshot of it. I also added the screenshot image to the flickr group Etsy Frontpagers. If you're an Etsy shop owner you can search your shop name to see if perhaps you've been on the frontpage and didn't even know it. That's how I found out about my first frontpage. It was a couple months after the fact that I found out about being on the frontpage for the first time. This is about the third time I've made it.

Visit jolijoli in her Etsy shop--the curator of this treasury. Thanks so much for selecting one of my paintings for your treasury!

Updated & Added New Links to the Blog

It's been a long day of adding new links and updating my blog. I hope I've made it more pleasing to the eye and easy to read.

Yesterday I posted a few links of companies to buy art supplies online and I added those links permanently in the section labeled Art Supplies, Matting & Framing Links. Other sections I added are Art & Watercolor Blogs, Artist Links & My Workshop Wishlist, Art Books, Magazines, & DVD's, and a few local Art Website Links. I'm sure I will be adding to all these sections as I discover more great websites to share with you.

Let me know what you think so far! However I did want to share a couple of websites with you where you can buy Yupo paper.

Blick Art Materials--Right now they are offering $5-20 dollars off your order plus $5.95 shipping, but I believe this ends at midnight tonight. They always offer free shipping on orders of $200 or more which can be a hefty price for one person so if you know of other artists who would like to submit an order with you you can qualify for free shipping or if you still don't exceed the $200 you can always split the shipping cost.

Yupo Watercolor Paper from Blicks

Cheap Joe's Art Stuff--I don't know of anyone who doesn't love Cheap Joe's and I've heard many great things about him and that he is just a wonderful person to get to meet in person. Free shipping from CJ's requires a minimum purchase of $250 which is higher than blicks.

Cheap Joe's Shipping Chart

I usually order from CJ's mainly b/c I get to order with a group of artists and I don't have to worry about shipping.

Yupo Watercolor Paper from Cheap Joe's

Jerry's Artarama--Free Shipping on orders of $175 or more (lower than both Blicks and CJ's) plus 10% off over $100 or 15%off over $250. I personally have not ordered from Jerry's before, but I've heard good things about them and with the shipping and specials going on right now I would try it if I had an order large enough.

Yupo Watercolor Paper from Jerry's

I consider these to be the three main art supply companies with the best reputation. Like I said I usually order from CJ's because I go in with a group of artists, but I have found that Blick's usually is a little lower in cost, therefore getting a little extra for your money.

What I like to do is open an internet window tab for both CJ's and Blick's, place my order in each ones shopping cart and compare my total with the additional shipping charge if there is one. I have not tried this with Jerry's, but next time I will. I seem to overlook Jerry's when I probably should be checking them out too. I could have been missing a really great deal!

Have you bought art supplies from any of these companies? Let me know what you think and tell me your experience. Comments Welcome!

Have a great day and I hope I'm feeling better soon so I can get back to the Yupo paper experiments!

Experimenting with Yupo Paper. Yupo paper is a synthetic plastic manufactured by using recycled plastics. My first experience with yupo paper was about a year ago in a waterclass I was taking. We were given a sheet of it and given instructions on how to use it and different ways to create texture on it. We then created a painting using it. I liked the paper, but I didn't give much thought into using it on a regularly, but shortly after that I had the opportunity to buy a package at an estate sale of a local artist. I was so excited then to have it to play around with. I have to admit I haven't done much with it except for one sheet that I played around with and is still a work in progress.

This past October my mom and I took a watercolor workshop with a local watercolor artist. To my suprise we were given a small piece of yupo paper and our first watercolor exercise we used the yupo. The two images in this post show the finished look after the class and then the finished painting after I changed it. Top--After I changed some colors; Bottom--Before pic.

Working with yupo paper is unlike anything you've ever experienced if you have ever painted with watercolor on paper. You can actually erase. Yes, I said erase! Because it is a plastic, lifting paint is only a matter of grabbing a wet paper towel or kleenex and wiping it up and then laying down paint again and if you still don't like it, wipe it up again!

In the two images I've shown you can see the difference in the paintings and that's all I did to change it was lifting and replacing the paint. I've recently been inspired to get the yupo paper back out and hopefully create some great paintings using the ideas I have jotted down in my mental notes.

More tomorrow on this subject and I will have another work in progress on yupo paper to show you.

Cool Winter Morning

This beautiful Cool Winter Morning landscape painting was listed in my shop yesterday evening. Earlier this week I was doing some painting for our annual watercolor society Christmas party. Everyone brings a painting who wants to participate in the gift exchange and I didn't have much to choose from that I didn't alreadyhave in my Etsy shop. The gift exchange is so much fun because I get to end up with a lovely work of art from one of my fellow artists. It's a pretty cool and inexpensive way to add to my collection too. I couldn't decide which painting to take. It was a toss up between this painting another one I painted a while back of a bowl of lemons. I let my husband choose which one I should give as a gift and he chose the bowl of lemons. I think that was the better choice since it doesn't snow down here anyways.

The party was held at the home of one of the artists from our watercolor society. He and his wife have the most gorgeous house and an exquisite art collection. Guess who ended up with my bowl of lemons painting? You guessed it, the artist and owner of the house with the exquisite art collection! I had a lovely time at the party and I hope they enjoy their new painting. I received a beautiful seascape painting, which is one of my favorite subjects!

If you are interested in this painting please visit my Etsy shop. Have a great weekend!

Cool Winter Morning

My Shop

My Blog

It's Chili Time!

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 142px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_rfEli69SQLE/STvZvQGmcbI/AAAAAAAAAGo/z0r3RInHf7w/s320/200.peppers.window.aceo.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5277050794194399666" />

Woke up this morning to check on my Etsy Store as I do every morning and found this hot treasury featuring one of my miniature paintings. I try to scan everything that's 8x10 inches or smaller because it's much easier than taking photos. Once in a while, I guess depending on the colors in the painting, the scan does not come out good at all. Sometimes the edges will have a very ugly green or brown tint and the colors become distorted and don't give anywhere near a good representation of the painting.

I try my hardest to get the best picture as I can and the viewer always has to remember that computer monitors vary and settings my interfere with the colors that are presented on your screen.

Hope this image is better. If you like it on your screen you are going to love it even better in person. I also provided an image for you to see what it would look like with a white outer mat, deep purple innermat, and a black frame. This is only a virtual mat and frame, the painting is offered without either, but for additional charges it can be sent with one or both.

Clicking the title of this post will take you directly to the listing in my Etsy Shop.

Winterscapes

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 164px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_rfEli69SQLE/STgHem99J6I/AAAAAAAAAFE/m2-EK-DrybQ/s200/600.wintertreessunbackgroun.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5275975185902413730" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 144px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_rfEli69SQLE/STgHedy_taI/AAAAAAAAAE8/ArjcXGbx2kI/s200/600.winterstorm2008.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5275975183440524706" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 150px; height: 200px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_rfEli69SQLE/STgHeDGuWII/AAAAAAAAAE0/8N57lXJwwLM/s200/600.coolwinterlandscape2008.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5275975176275515522" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 152px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_rfEli69SQLE/STgHd3Gj46I/AAAAAAAAAEs/FI2-x4YN_Bo/s200/600.alizarinskypinetrees.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5275975173053604770" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 130px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_rfEli69SQLE/STgHdooRvGI/AAAAAAAAAEk/TOvilPXgKVA/s200/600.whitepoinsettia2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5275975169168489570" />

Here in South Texas we don't experience the same kind of winters many of you experience ever year. We get cold fronts and that's about it. If the weather drops down to 70 degrees most everyone is wearing jackets. In fact yesterday was 83 degrees and very windy. A cold front came in last night and todays high is 63, so you can imagine how cold we are today. Have I made any of you jealous of our gorgeous weather yet?

You might be thinking what does any of that have to do with art? Well, it does and I'm going to tell you where my inspiration comes from when I'm painting winter scenes. I've been painting lots of them lately. It's that time of year, Christmas is fast approaching and it puts me in the mood to paint frost, snow, poinsettias, winter landscapes and most anything you would associate with Christmas and winter.

So where do I find inspiration to paint snow if it doesn't snow here? Memories. Memories of when my family lived in Boston, Massachusetts for about six months and it just so happened to be during the winter months. We actually lived in a suburb of Boston called Winthrop. This is where I saw snow for the first time. It was wonderful! My sister and I built this huge snowman and threw our first snowballs at each other.

We lived in a basement floor apartment so when I looked out my window all I could see was snow. My parents took is sledding, we walked through Harvard Square in the snow, we visited New Hampshire and saw the mountains, it was a really neat time and experience for us because my mom, my sister, and me had never lived anywhere else other than Corpus. It was a short time we were there and I hated that I had to leave all my friends not knowing if I would ever come back. It ended up a short stay, but a very memorable one and now I'm glad to have had the experience.

Although it doesn't normally snow here in Corpus, we did have one Christmas miracle. In 2004 we had a record snowfall of 4.4 inches breaking the record of 4.3 inches set back on February 14, 1895. This time was even more extraordinary because it came on Christmas Eve. I think it was the best Christmas present everyone received in Corpus that year!

Clicking on the title will take you to my Etsy shop where you can purchase any of these paintings. If you don't have an Etsy account contact me and I will send you an invoice for the painting you are interested in and I will suspend the listing for that painting. I also have other winter landscpaes not posted here. Go check them out.

My Etsy Shop

The Artisans Challenge: 10/13 Challenge

The Artisans Challenge: 10/13 Challenge

Please vote for my Cool Waters painting in the 10/13/08 Artisan's Challenge
Look for this painting.
