Tracktest Releases Comprehensive Analysis of English Test Results

Tracktest Assessment, a leading provider of online English proficiency tests, has published an in-depth analysis of English test results collected from its platform during the calendar years 2023-2024. The report offers valuable insights into the performance of test-takers across various CEFR levels, highlighting key trends and challenges in English language learning.

Key Findings:

CEFR Level Distribution: The B2 level (Upper-intermediate) emerged as the most popular among Tracktest users, accounting for about one-third of all exams taken. This level is often seen as the minimum proving an "active command of the English language." The A2 (Elementary) and B1 (Intermediate) levels were also commonly taken, while the C levels (Proficient English User, C1 and C2) together accounted for 14% of all exams.
Success Rate: Approximately 67% of test-takers passed successfully, scoring more than 65% on the Core or Complete test. The average score for the Core test was 71%, while the Complete test, which includes all four language skills, had an average score of 62%.
Skill Challenges: The Core test evaluates Grammar, Reading, and Listening comprehension. Grammar posed the greatest challenge with an average score of 69.4%, followed by Reading at 70% and Listening at 73%. Speaking was the most difficult part of the Complete test, with an average score of 59%, while Writing had an average score of 61%.
Grammar Challenges: Modal verbs and Prepositions were identified as the most difficult grammar categories, each appearing in 20% of test feedback.

Performance by Profession, Age, and Location:

Legal professionals excelled in Reading comprehension due to their need to analyze and understand complex texts.
Younger test-takers typically performed better in grammar and writing, likely due to their recent and ongoing education in these areas.
Test-takers living in English-speaking countries achieved the best scores in Listening and Speaking, benefiting from immersion in an English-speaking environment.

New design of PDF reports

This week we launched our newly designed PDF test reports now available for download directly from the results page. The PDF test report provides additional details and feedback on the test-taker's performance, such as net time spent, percentage scores for all test sections, and grammar categories that should be improved.

For the Complete test, comments from our raters on oral and writing performance are added to the second and third pages of the Test report.

Test reports are generated in PDF format for all finished tests, regardless of the outcome (even those unsuccessful).

The new design aligns with our website's visual identity and is more condensed, which means it uses less paper when printed. This change not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also supports our commitment to sustainability.

Test timer in Core tests and Writing tests

The test timer is an essential feature for both Core and Writing tests in specific settings. Throughout most of the test duration, it is conveniently displayed below the header, allowing test-takers to easily check the remaining time without being distracted from answering questions.

For the Core test, there is a single time limit (e.g., 50 minutes) covering all three sections: Grammar, Reading, and Listening. In contrast, the Writing exam is timed separately for each writing task.
During the Speaking exam, test-takers have 30 seconds to prepare and then 20 to 60 seconds to record their answers.

When only 15% of the time remains, the timer turns red and prominently appears at the top of the page. Once the time limit is reached, the test is locked, and any unanswered questions are automatically marked as incorrect.

Admin: How to save custom texts in invitation e-mails

During the invitation process, you can customize the default invitation text to include your important information.

The only restriction is that a button and a unique user link for starting the test will always appear below your text.

If you modify the email text, you will be prompted after sending the invitations to save it for future use.

If you choose to save it, this custom text will become the default for your next invitations until you decide to change it again.

Speaking test- timer for preparing the answer

The Tracktest Speaking exam features eight general conversational questions that you should be able to answer with minimal preparation.

You'll receive the question and have 30 seconds to prepare your response.

Once you're ready, you can either click "Start Recording" or wait for the recording to begin automatically after 30 seconds.

The required duration of the answers varies from 15 seconds to 1 minute.
We recommend you use all the allocated time for your answer.

When you upload your answer, you will automatically get the next question.

E-mail invitation links become permanent

Inviting users via email has long been the preferred and most direct method for platform administrators to onboard users. This feature, launched a decade ago, has undergone several enhancements while maintaining its essential functionality.

Previously, issuing an invitation would generate a new, unique link, rendering the old one inactive. This often led to confusion as users attempted to use an outdated link. We've taken note of the feedback from company account owners who have voiced their concerns about this issue.

In response, we've introduced additional tools for administrators to manage user access, such as archiving, removing unused credits, and restricting access to certain levels. Consequently, the need for constantly changing invitation links has diminished.

Starting this July, email invitation links will no longer expire. If you resend an invitation for a new test months later, users will receive a familiar link in their email—the same one they've used previously. Should there be a need to refresh a link for a particular user or for everyone from your organisation, our support team will help you with the reset.

Admins: Individual notification about the test completion

Organisational admins have two ways how they can be notified by e-mail about their user activities.

In the Organisational settings->Company profile in the section E-mail notification, admins can enable:

1. Individual notification about the finished test. The platform sends the e-mail to admins every time when their user finishes the Core or Complete test.

2. Summary Weekly Report. The platform sends an e-mail every Sunday with the attached report in the .csv format about the activity in their organization (users added, tests taken, used licenses). If there is no user activity, the report is not sent. This option is enabled as default for newly registered organisations.

Admins: Delivery status of the e-mail invitations in the user profile

We added the info about the sent date and delivery status of the invitation e-mails to the organizational module so the company admins know if there is any potential problem with the deliverability of the invitation links to the specific candidate.
It is visible in the user profile under the invitation link (for invitations sent since Feb 23rd, 2023, 1pm GMT):

status: delivered means that the mail server of the candidate accepted the mail. It still can skip the inbox and land in their junk or other folder based on their mailbox rules, but it has been delivered successfully to their mailbox.

status: failed: the candidate did not receive the e-mail. The reasons for failure can be the wrong e-mail address, a full mailbox, or a mail server rejecting the e-mail because of their anti-spam policy, etc. Approximately 3% of invite e-mails are affected.
It is typically a permanent fail, so resending the invite from the system will not help.
Recommended action: Admin can copy the link and try to share it in alternative ways: send it from their own e-mail address or via instant messengers.

What do we do to ensure the maximum deliverability of the invite e-mails:

E-mail invitations for the test are a popular admin feature in the Tracktest assessment platform because it is straightforward for candidates to use. Administrators send the invite to the specific or all levels from the company account, and candidates just click the link and can start the test.

However, sending bulk e-mails and ensuring they are correctly delivered requires much effort and ongoing active monitoring of e-mail reputation. Successful E-mail send/receive always depends on both sides, so it is not entirely in our hands, but we do our best to follow the best industry practices and recommendations:

For our application e-mails, we use the external commercial e-mail delivery platform (Mailgun) hosted in the EU region, which can routinely handle large volumes of e-mails.
E-mails are correctly signed and authenticated (DKIM, SPF, DMARC).
They are sent from the specific address invite@mail.tracktest.eu and our dedicated IP address.

New design of content webpages

We launched our presentation webpage's new design (located at tracktest.eu) on February 14. It is the third website design iteration in our history, coming seven years after the previous "blue" redesign.

We wanted a new design to reinforce Tracktest's brand identity. Therefore you will find the elements and vibrant colors from our logo (red, yellow, and green) used in various contexts around the website. We are reducing the blue parts in the header and footer and replacing them with a more pleasing white or light blue background.

But this redesign is not only about the colors. We also make the new pages faster to load and easy to use on mobile devices.

With the new visuals of presentation webpages, we are entering the third stage of redesigning our brand identity. We updated the offline materials at the end of last year and the social media presence in January.

The last, most important, and complex phase- a visual refresh of the assessment application itself (app.tracktest.eu)- is coming next, and it is expected in the Q2 timeframe.

Results: updated overview table for admins

With the launch of the new format of the Complete exam, we are able to quantify the score for all four skills, including speaking and writing. These scores have been displayed in the test reports and in the excel exports of detailed results. Now they are coming also to the Results overview table.

Types of scores displayed in the Results overview table:

1. Test-taker takes the Core test, and admins see their Core test % score in the Results table

2. Test-taker finishes the Speaking&Writing exam, and admins can see Sx, Wx next to their Core test % score. It is an indicator that their Speaking and Writing exam is completed and is waiting for the evaluation.

3. When the Speaking and Writing exam evaluation is published by our raters, the total % result for the Complete test is displayed in bold.

The black result means the successful result, i.e. the test-taker achieved an overall score of at least 65% with none of your sub-scores (Core, Speaking, Writing) below 44%.
Failed Complete tests are highlighted in red.

4. Filter: You can display All results or filter only the Core or only the Complete tests results.

In 2022, we recorded a 35% year-on-year growth in user registrations and the number of completed English tests. It is 10 percentage points more than the annual growth in the previous "covid" year.

We achieved world-class 71 points in the Net Promoter Score metric.
76% of users would actively recommend Tracktest to a friend or colleague.

Net Promoter Score (NPS) measures the customer satisfaction of individual Tracktest customers.

Based on the global standards, any score above 0 would be considered "good", 50 and above is excellent, while 70 and above is considered "world-class".

Feedback (things to improve) from your English test results

Tracktest does not show you the correct answers to the questions and tasks from your tests in order to protect our IP and avoid the washback effect. However, the system gives you detailed feedback on what you should focus on if you want to improve your test score in future.

1. In your test result, you will find the detailed section results (Grammar, Reading, Listening) together with the listed top three out of 13 English grammar topics where you failed most.

When you take also the Speaking and Writing exam, you get also targeted Productive skills feedback- both general and detailed for each of four aspects (Range, Accuracy, Coherence and Fluency/Task Completion), including some specific mistakes you made during your test or recommendations what to improve.
You can download this test report also in pdf format.

2. In your user profile, you will find the overall feedback generated from all your tests taken in the last 12 months. It provides you with an explanation of what the specific grammar topic or the S&W aspect means and tips on which exercises you should focus on in your preparation for the next test.

Note: If your test is provided via school or company, the test administrator can decide to not show the test results and this feedback to the test-takers.

Verification QR code on certificates

In the footer of your Tracktest English certificate, you can find the QR code. It contains the shortcut to the online version of your certificate. Anybody who received your certificate (school admission officer or recruiter) can immediately verify on the Tracktest servers that the certificate has not been forged and is authentic.

How to use the QR code:

Point your QR code reader or smartphone camera to the code on your certificate, and you will be directed to our certificate verification portal: app.tracktest.eu/certificate with the pre-filled Test ID number and the name, and you will find the online version of your certificate.

QR codes have also been added to the past completed tests. You can download the updated PDF version from your TrackTest profile or get it from your assessment provider. All previously generated certificates remain valid.

In our last year report, we described the year 2020 as the year "unlike all the others in our history" impacted by the abrupt Covid outbreak.

Key 2021 figures:

TrackTest reported 18-20% year-on-year growth in all key metrics in 2021.

In April, we registered our millionth user.

Our support team received 2.712 tickets (questions or requests) from our customers via e-mail or social media.
We resolved 97% of these tickets within the next working day.

Most tickets were received on Monday and around 5 pm - 6 pm GMT. October was the busiest month.

63% of users would actively recommend TrackTest to a friend or colleague, 21% was neutral and 15% would not recommend it (calculated from users who individually purchased the licence in 2021 and participated in our after-sale NPS survey).

New features:

In January, we have launched the brand new four-skills exam named the Complete test replacing the previously used English Core test with Speaking&Writing.

New options- Verified exams count in May, Enhanced credits assignation in October and November- were added for the assessment administrators.

Customers using our API connector got new ways how to retrieve their detailed results and import them automatically to the system of their choice, for example to their custom PowerBI dashboards.

TrackTest certificates have been recognized by the Ministry of Education in Colombia (Ministerio de Educación Nacional - Resolución No.018035).
European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO) successfully completed the process of the TrackTest trademark registration.

New features for admins: Credits assignation (Core, Verified, Speaking&Writing)

With the new software update planned for November 2021, we improve the way how you allocate the exam credits to your users. Now you are able to assign the credit for the specific test version: with or without verification, with or without Speaking&Writing, for the specific level or for all.
This update has no impact on the cost and terms of use of the Core licences and credits for the additional options.

Previously, you activated the user license in two steps- add the user and send them the invitation.

In the new process, after you create new users, you decide which type of English test you want to enable for them and assign the respective credits. With this action, you have much bigger flexibility in combining different versions of the test as well as stricter control over the use of your credits.

You can find the assigned credits in the new column on your Users page or in the user profile. You can always allocate only one credit of each type per user. When it is spent (Core test expiring after 12 months, Verified and Sp/Wr used for the level test), you can assign them the new credit if needed.

If your user did not use the credit, you can individually cancel the assignation and use those credits for another user or you can also change the level for which you assigned these credits.

VOUCHER CREATION
If you are using vouchers for the activation, this option is now available from the home page via Add user button. The Core licence is assigned to the voucher automatically, but now you can also assign the upsell credits (Verified exam or Speaking&Writing) to the specific voucher.

New feature for admins: Verified credits counter in the company accounts

Administrators of the organizational accounts can now manage the credits for the Verified exam and activate and deactivate the access to the verified exams for their users.

Super-admins enable the online proctoring (invigilation) module for their organization in their Settings:

a) Standard means that the online proctoring is disabled and the test is provided as is, without a camera and identity verification.

b) Proctored shows only the Verified exam option (with the camera, identity verification, and mandatory time limit).

c) Both- with this option, users will be able to choose which type of test they want to take.

In order to access the Verified exams, organizations need to have the active Verified exam credits which can be ordered on the Users page by clicking order more licences.

One Verified credit is used for each successful level test (with a score above 65%). Tests with a score below 65% do not get the certificate so they are not submitted to verification and do not spend the Verified credit.
