7 Tips for making the membership site make more money

In the previous posts we talked about getting people to sign up for the member site.

While this is an important step, it should not be done at the expense of running a great site. In other words, you want to make your customers happy. If you do, they’ll keep coming back.

Having a successful site means that you will provide great content and also find ways to increase your earnings.

Here are some ideas.

1. Promote affiliate programs

Are there certain products or services that you use all the time and recommend in your site? If this is the case, there’s nothing wrong with promoting the affiliate link. If customers trust that you won’t just promote anything and respect your opinion, this will increase your sales.

2. Don’t get overwhelmed

This is as much a tip for making more money as it is a case for simplicity. Customers don’t necessarily want a site that has a lot on it. They just want content that serves to teach them about the topic they are interested in.

A membership site is a good way to boost your income. However, it won’t be worth your energy if you make it too complicated. The easier it is to run, the better off you’ll be.

3. Make them want more

At the point when your site debuts, you’ll want to have enough content on there to satisfy your new customers. However, you also shouldn’t put all the content up there at first. Making them want more is a great way to give them a reason to come back which means they’ll be willing to renew their membership.

4. Get feedback

A great way to get your customers coming back for more is to have them give you feedback. This is an easy way to make sure all of their needs are being met as well. If you ask them their opinion and then implement their suggestions, they’ll feel as if they are a valued customer.

5. Great customer service

As with any business, providing your customers with excellent customer service is a big part of making your site successful. If you have great content and your rates are more than affordable but you don’t have excellent customer service, you may find that you don’t convert the one time customers into constant, paying members. Answer people’s emails. Try to help them solve their problems. If you don’t have the time to take care of this yourself, at least hire someone who does. Starting a membership site is easy. However, to keep it running, you need to focus on things like customer service in order to make it successful.

6. Don’t give up

This may sound obvious but if you aren’t seeing the results you want at first, don’t give up. There may be a part of your strategy that needs honing, but giving up may not be the best option. Sometimes, membership sites can take a little while to get going. If you give up too quickly you may never see the success you want.

How to get People to Sign Up for Your Membership Site

Once you have the site up and running and decide on a pricing schedule, your next task is to entice people to sign up. There are several ways you can do this and it is a good idea to try each of these methods to maximize your signup rate.

1. Sell to your list
If you have a list, hopefully they are already accustomed to buying things from you. That’s because the list is a very powerful thing when it comes to selling your own products.

2. Create a list
If you don’t have a list set up yet – work to create one. You can offer a free teaser membership to the site by having people sign up for the list. Or, you can give something else away such as an ebook in your niche. You can use a landing page or bring them directly into the site -

3. Sales page
You’ll definitely need to create a sales page to send those who opt-in on your landing page to. If the sales page is highly effective then all you need to do is direct more traffic to the login or landing page to get signups. To determine if it’s effective, you’ll need to test it by watching opt-ins to those who buy.

4. Market the sales page
This may seem obvious but once the sales page is up and running, you’ll want to market it using any means you can think of. You can put a link for it on your blog or website, use social networking, do article marketing, create Squidoo lenses, etc. Basically, employ any means you’d use to market a standard website.

5. Start an affiliate program
This one is really fun. Once you get the affiliate program up and running, just start an affiliate program. That means that other people will promote your landing page to their lists and you’ll reach a wider range of people. Granted, it will cut out into your profits but this is an easy way to get people coming to your site.

If you use a membership site product such as Amember it will have a built-in affiliate program, plus easily turns new members into affiliates - creating members for life. How? If a member sells just 2 memberships, theirs is conceptually free - so why would they ever leave?

This list of ways to get people to sign up for the site is by no means complete.

Be creative, use blogs, forums, ezine ads, and if your sales page converts well, invest in a Google Adwords/PPC campaign.

All that is left is seeing how many members will get you financially free.

Deciding on Price for Your Membership Site

How to decide on a price schedule for your membership site

Another key decision you’ll need to make is figuring out a pricing schedule for the site. Of course, you can choose to make it free but that should only be done for a specific purpose such as building your list or getting people interested in the full membership.

In general, you’ll want to choose a price your future customers will want to pay for. Sometimes it’s hard to gauge until you set a price and see what happens. If it’s too low, people may suspect that the content is lacking. If it’s too high, you may have a hard time getting people to sign up, depending on the niche.

Either way, choose a price that you think makes sense and then give it at least a month. If membership isn’t quite what you expect, alter it accordingly.

There are also different things you can do in terms of when the customers get billed for the site. Here are the choices

• One time fee
On this kind of site, users pay only once. The membership could expire after a certain point which often happens with things like courses or if the content is limited.

• Lifetime membership
This is a variation of the one time fee. The difference is that the site membership will never expire and you’ll have access as long as the site is running.
Why do people do this type - chance to sell many other smaller items and affiliate offerings easily and conveniently.

• Charge them monthly
This is probably the most common. A monthly membership fee also gives you a steady income to rely on each month provided you have a steady rate of memberships. This is my preferred method.

• Yearly rate
Some membership sites charge a yearly fee. This is a good idea if you aren’t sure when you’ll update the content or if the site is well established and easy to run.
This is also good when you have a years worth of content, you can offer the same stuff as the monthly, only full access, give them an up-front discount for full payment, yet get a chunk of money without worrying when they opt-out.

Keep in mind that you can offer your customers a number of membership options. For example, some sites charge a monthly rate and also a yearly rate. If you do the math, the yearly rate is usually a better bargain if you can find the cash.

The actual price you set for these, the answer to that is to test it.

Once you have made your plan for your membership site, it's time to get some content ideas.

CONTENT OPTIONS FOR YOUR SITE

At some point, you’ll need to decide on what kind of content you will offer your customers in the membership site. You can basically do whatever you want but your choices need to be a perfect balance of making your customers happy and not making your life too complicated.

TYPES OF CONTENT TO PUT ON YOUR SITE

If you’ve ever been part of a membership site then you probably have an idea of what to expect. You may want to become a member of a site or two so you can get a feel for how they work. With that said, here’s a list of some of the types of content you can have on it.

1. Articles - serve a dual purpose - you can also submit these to article directories and get some traffic back to your site

2. Blog posts - you can make it the type of site where you post, and get comments on the topic of the day or week

3. Ebooks - you can provide a free ebook of the week

4. Audios/Interviews - these are always good content - and easy to make. You can hold a teleseminar with a topic and then provide the content here, or interview an expert and provide insights from someone else for the club. Either way - this is one simple way to get content

5. Forum - you could have a forum, my only warning here is if you don't have someone manage that, it could get overwhelming. Somebody has to manage, watch bad posts, unfortunately not everone is out to benefit from what you have to offer

6. Videos - training videos, step by step, week by week, whatever works to take them from point A to point B

Bear in mind that the most complicated membership site isn’t always the best.

If you keep it simple and you’re consistent, customers will still be very pleased as long as your content provides value to them.

The key here is to know that content is the easy part, so don't avoid membership sites thinking you have nothing to say, or put in there.

WHICH KIND OF MEMBERSHIP SITE SHOULD YOU CREATE?

There are actually several different kinds of membership sites you can create. Some are difficult to create, others are quite simple. But how do you know which kind suits your site?

There are several ways to arrive at your decision. You can decided based on

• How much work you want to put in creating the site.

• Whether or not you want a simple format or one that has a lot of bells and whistles.

• How much time you plan on spending updating the site and providing content.

• Whether or not you want to create a community setting.

• Whether or not you want to outsource to set the site up or if you have the skills to do it yourself

That list is by no means complete but it can get you started as you think about what components you want on the site. Here is a short list of the types of membership sites out there.

• Autoresponder based membership site
Just collect the payments and the content gets sent to their email. This is the easiest to implement.

• Standard membership site
You can set up your membership site as if you would a regular website. The only difference is that a login is required. These sites can have articles, a forum, a blog, etc. It will all depend on what is right for the niche.

• Fixed Term membership site
This is where you offer a site for a specific duration, and they pay you in chunks, or up front. You can then decide whether it is autoresponder based or standard.

Next decide how to get content to them, and what type of content you want to deal with and, let's not forget - where are you going to get the content.

The first thing you need to decide is if you will set up a free membership site or a paid membership site. There are some good points for each.

Benefits of a Free Membership Site

• Can help you build a list
• Entice people into the full membership
• To protect your sensitive content
• Build a sense of community among members

Benefits of a paid membership site

• Make more money internet marketing
• Develop a loyal customer base
• Have a steady stream of passive income
• Build a sense of community among members

Those lists are by no means complete. However, it is a good list to help you decide if you want to take their money or not. Keep in mind that one membership site can have a free and a paid version. The free version can help you build your list and also be used as a teaser to get people into the full membership.

My membership site Internet Success University is both. You can get in, and see a few things, which helps me to build a list, and be able to continue to communicate the benefits to them about why they would join.

The other thing you can do is if they don't join after a while, offer a trial membership for $1 - and get them to see what it's like. If your site is good, they'll stay.

It's a good idea to start a membership site if you want to increase your profits.

Here’s a list of the benefits to owning one.

• Dominate the competition in your niche

If you have a membership site, you’ll stand out amongst the people who have a score of e-books but nothing else to offer their customers.

• Get more money out of your list

You may have heard that “the money is in the list”. And, you’ll want to get as much money from your list members as you can. A membership site is the perfect way to do this, as they pay you month after month.

• Increase customer loyalty

If your site has great content and you respond promptly to all queries, a membership site will increase customer loyalty a lot better than selling individual products. This is because the customer will feel as if you’re more accessible. You'll build a community of people who know you, trust you, like you and buy from you.

• Develops a sense of community

Membership sites that have a forum help encourage a sense of community. So not only do the members interact with you, but they can interact with each other. This is a good selling point and a benefit for the owner of the site because it is another thing that will help increase your customer’s loyalty.

• Great way to build a list

If you want to start a free membership site, or offer portions of your membership site for no cost, it can present an effective way to build a list.

• Develop passive income

Although internet marketing is a great career, the money can be a little unstable. A membership site is a good way to not only make more money, but to make the income you do bring in a lot steadier. You know the number of members you need to pay your mortgage, buy a car, take that vacation, live the lifestyle of your dreams. It is predictable, and appears in your paypal month after month.

• They don’t need to be complicated

A lot of people assume that a membership site is complicated. Not necessarily. There are plenty of options that are simple, such as exclusive content delivered via autoresponder.

Let’s look at the math. say you have a membership site that offers exclusive content related to your niche. If you charge $19.95 a month and have 100 subscribers, that translates to nearly $2000 profit and all you needed to do was refresh the content and make sure the site is running properly. I charge $47 a month for my club, at 500 members, that is $24,957 per month. :)

That is what a membership site will do.

There are many different ways you can make money with your internet business. Most people first starting out either promote affiliate products or they decide to have their own product.

For many, this product is often an e-book. While it is possible to make good money selling e-books, that is only one option. Another option is to start a membership site.

The two aren’t necessarily mutually exclusive. In fact, a good internet business sells several different products so that they can have income coming in from several different sources. The main point is that a membership site can seriously boost your income.

1. Whether it's a website landing page, a blog with affiliate marketing, or any other type of product or service you want to promote, you start with the contact list. Then, you use the features of the site to help get the word out by starting to use the features that tend to be more “newsy” and viral. For Facebook, these features start the ball rolling quite nicely:

2. Status updates – This is a feature where you get to broadcast to your friends what you are doing. You can also add links there to different pages on the Internet. Try to include valuable information and not just a link to a sales page, because it can get you some unwanted notice from the admins. But, other than that, you can use it to lead traffic back to your website, blogs, articles, and any other content you want to promote on the web.

3. Comment on other people's updates – What's the point of sending out information only to your own friends? Why not hook into other friends and add a link where appropriate? When you comment on the status, it goes into the newsfeed and their friends see it too. It also gets put on their wall. Just don't spam or solicit overtly and you should be fine.

4. Share a link, post – Like some web post or article you saw online? Why not share the link or post on your wall? Your friends will see it in the newsfeed and it will stay on your wall too.

5. Upload photos and comment – Photos tend to gather much more attention than text. So, add some good photos and link them to your niche or market. If they get commented on a lot, they can go viral fairly quickly.

6. Create your own application – It's not as hard as it sounds since it's basically just a collection of images. Then, you add it to the application market place and wait for others to install it. You can put your URL in various places and gather a lot of promotion this way.

7. Promote a blog on Facebook – There are a number of people who have set up blog networks on Facebook and can be a great way to network your blog with other bloggers, create more friends from subscribers, and promote the heck out of your blog. If your blog has advertising on it, you can even make some nice change.

8. Facebook Event - if you're having an event, or a teleseminar simply create a facebook event, and others will see it from all over. You can also promote the event link in any of the above methods as well - doubling your exposure.

4 Fast Ways to Build Contacts in Facebook

Here are few ways to start building contacts in your demographics to increase your online exposure:

1. Join the right networks – When you first start, Facebook will ask you to pick a network(s), which will either be a school or a geographical location. Pick an area where you are thinking of doing the most business, or where you have the most contacts. Once in that network, you can get friends from there by browsing profiles that area available for people within that network.

2. Leverage friends of friends – So, you've signed up, gotten a few friends, and noticed that (wow!) one of your friends has thousands of friends. Take a look at the friends list and see if you know of any or if they are in your network. Then, ask them to friend you. Remember to keep it slow and steady, less than 20 or 30 a day.

3. Join groups – Join groups and then post to the wall. Befriend group members in the same group. There are even groups for people with no friends who want more friends, but that's not targeted to your demographic. You should pick a group that is targeted to your demographic.

4. Have fun! - Set up applications and join fun games and activities that expose you to more people online. It's best to pick an application that has something to do with your niche, so that you are attracting the right core group. So, if you were interested in marketing green products, you might join the L'il Green application to meet more people there by maintaining their online plants. There are literally thousands of applications you can investigate and leverage to create more friends on your targeted list.

Wow, you know that you've come full circle, when the site that started it all - 3 years later gets a makeover and a new launch.

I was so excited to work on this site.

13 Year Old Daughter Wants to Quit School and Be an Entrepreneur

My daughter wants to quit school and be an entrepreneur.

Now many of you may be shocked by that headline, but when she asked me if she could quit school, I didn't freak out - I asked Why?

Her answer, well you're an entrepreneur, and the way I see it, I'm an entrepreneur too, so why learn stuff at school, why not just learn what I want to be in business for, and start right now. (seems good to me - I started my first business at age 19, right out of college, but if I had the internet I am certain I would have started at her age too :)

To say I was proud, was an understatement. I almost burst with glee - but - we do live in a society that requires a child be educated.

So what did I do?

Thankfully, I am an advocate for being self employed. Taking what you love to do, and making money from it. The beauty of this, is ANYONE can do it. It's what I teach in all of my mentor programs. But, I needed to solve the 'society' dilemma, and there it was on TV, while I was surfing for home renovation shows, and that was an online school that equaled the education at a school, but you could do it online.
Same curriculum, same graduation, just do it from home.

How perfect - Grade 6 to 12 - she could 'be legal' - do school work on her terms, and build a business at the same time. So the test begins.

We applied for the school - it isn't just a matter of signing up online. Transcripts needed to be transferred, records, reports, standardized testing, the works.

Fortunately, she is a perfect candidate. She is a straight A student, she was in an advanced program already at her school, she is a member of the National Association of Gifted Children - something she was inducted into based on her test scores, and we work from home, so we can easily monitor her progress... and voila - a few weeks later she was informed she was in.

So now, she will split her days between school, and discovering her entrepreneurial spirit. But what made me mention this now, was when I put on the Dreams To Reality Success Summit in Los Angeles this year, Celeste met a guy named Adam Ginsberg. Top 5 Crappy Subject Lines in Internet Marketing

The Top 5 crap subject lines in Internet Marketing

... and no, free isn't one of them.

Some times you just have to rant, and today is one of those days.

Email subject lines - I have become such an advocate for effective and respectful email subject lines that I have been invited to speak at the Association of Strategic Marketing National Conference

My topic: Writing Effective Emails and Subject Lines: Getting Your Email to Arrive and Thrive.

They assigned the topic to me, so it has me looking pretty heavy at what is going on right now.

And you know things have turned into a free for all marketing fest with people grabbing ruthlessly at sales in any way they can, when I get subject lines that say:

#1 Get this!

- Could that be any more unimaginative – like they had 3 seconds to get out an email and attempt to make some sales today

#2 - It's Crazy.... this is crazy... Jim has gone Crazy...

- this has become one of the most abused word in internet marketing and I for one hope it is failing.

Nobody is going crazy, nobody has lost their minds, they are looking for a way to make a sale today and this is it. The price isn't insanity - it's bad enough people are labeled with this - but now every action you take is also insane. Then why would I buy from you?

#3 - I'm sorry, oops, will you forgive me?

Are you trying to show us you are in such a rush to get people's money that you made a mistake? Mistakes happen, I know that, I have done them, but the problem with overused tactic #3 is now when we make them for real, it's a gimmick. The truth has been removed completely from these phrases.

#4 - dude
Do I even have to comment on this one? I got this, that's as interesting as "Hey"

#5 - I have really bad news

Then they proceed to tell you their product has sold out.

Bad news is my house burned down, a family member is sick, I broke my leg, the economy is still getting worse, I went bankrupt -that is bad news.

Your product sold out is not bad news. Missing out on that opportunity - is not bad news.

Why do you make your subscribers feel like crap. Why not just say "You are a loser for not buying. If you continue to be this stupid, you'll be living in on the streets." And I'm amazed that more don't opt out with that combination.

And for the latest trend - putting a RE: in front, like you communicated with them first :)

RE: you wanting to buy my stuff...

As someone who respects copywriting, and internet marketing done right, if you see emails with stuff like this, check it out and maybe start to follow some other people instead.

It's your in-box, make sure you are treated right.

Celeste Repchuk The Winner of Out's Lady Gaga Video Contest

Last week saw three finalists gunning for first place in our Lady Gaga Video Contest and at one time or another each clip held the pole position, but in the end Celeste Repchuk's take on "Just Dance" pulled ahead to claim the win.

A mere 13 years old, Celeste conceptualized, shot, starred in, and edited the video (along with some help from her brothers).

While we're not sure the pop star -- and current Out magazine cover girl -- has seen the winning video, we believe she'd be ecstatic to think she inspired Celeste and she'd certainly be proud of her creativity, ingenuity, and dedication to living the glamorous life.

Backstory:

It started with Celeste asking me if she could send in a video for a Lady Gaga contest. Thinking to myself sure, as long as it doesn't involve me, I said "Sure Go for it!"

She grabbed the video camera, a boom box, and her brother. And they wandered through every crevace of the house playing the song, changing her outfit, and shooting video. This went on for days. The total time of the video was 3:20. It would take 2 days to shoot a minutes worth, as she would stop the scene and change it every few seconds.

Upon completion, the night before submission, we discover it was for 18 years and older. They need my permission. I send a quick email to give consent, they get permission from their lawyers to accept it, we get word it's good to go.

She makes the Top 3 finalists, and that is where public voting began.

Again, she took the lead and hit her facebook friends - every day. And sure enough - they showed up to give their support.

Great example of tenacity, completing a project, and reaping the rewards.

She won the contest, and the video and information then get sent to Lady Gaga's management team - who will ship the prize pak.

Very proud mom, a daughter that is bursting with excitement and anticipation over what Lady Gaga goodies will arrive, and now she is seeking what project she'll do now. Love it!

HGTV Reveal with a California Fire Backdrop

During the TV shooting for HGTV, as a backdrop was a fire, although 2 hillsides over, left us with poor air quality, reduced visibility, ashes, dust, and 100 foot smoke plumes.

When I first moved to California I could never understand why the hills were so barren and brown. I figured at the time it was heat, never imagining that almost annually hills catch on fire and are scorched barren of vegetation.

Over 85,000 acres, and only 5% contained. 30 miles so far have burned, and as we live on a hill top, fire is an issue for us too.

Thankfully we only have soot on our vehicle every day, and the smoke and clouds are directly behind us - but our hill is not on fire.

I am amazed how fast this fire, now in its 5th day spread. When I think about where I am from, that fire goes from Burlington, ON to Toronto distance wise. That spans 5 cities. At many points, they have to reroute air traffic away from Burbank Airport.
The only planes we hear right now are those dropping water on nearby hills.

Most of the day we are smoke covered, as the 3 digit temperatures and no wind let it hover. No wind isn't great for us, but sure is a blessing for the firefighters which has almost hit the 3000 mark.

Houses, ranches, animals, have burned, deaths have occurred.

Send your prayers to those areas, and be vey grateful for something today.

Behind the stove

Floor - this floor was brutal - it was like concrete - I had to put a cement backerboard subfloor - which was the hard part because drilling was wicked - but the rest was easy - except on my knees.

And remember - I did this - not bad for an internet marketer.
