What Are You Playing Memorial Weekend?

The GoozerNation team breaks down which games they are playing this weekend. What are you playing? Sound off in the forum by leaving a comment below.

Erik Kubik - I guess since I finished Diablo III I should go back to Mass Effect 3. Maybe I’ll try to finish RDR Undead Nightmare. I think I might start Resistance 3. And if the stars align I’ll either pick up Starhawk or Max Payne 3.

Craig Will - Unfortunately a holiday weekend when moving from one apartment to another means little to no time for games. What time I do have will probably be spent playing Rage of Bahumut (still) on my phone, Disgaea 3 on my Vita, and Dragon’s Dogma on the 360.

Mark Del Rio - I just finished Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine on my PC. I might check out some multiplayer or just go for a few more ‘chevies. I also have 1 more achievement to get in Trine 2. I might give that a spin. Other than that I have no new game on my horizon. Time to dig into my backlog.

Ryan Johnson - Still plugging away through MGS3. I had a two-hour marathon session and finished The End and The Fury. I gave up on the “no kills” for this playthrough when The Fear kept eating to recharge, so I ended up having some memorable moments on The End, such as lobbing a grenade up on the ledge he was on from underneath after he chastised me, and dropping three shotgun shells into him point blank at a time. The sniping part was very fun, but when I let loose with my explosive and close-combat rounds, it became a whole new battle, and a lot of fun. The Fury went down as a stamina kill though. This weekend, I hope to get a couple hours on MGS, but also do some Phoenix Wright. I beat the first two games on WiiWare, and forgot I bought the third!

Jon Morris - In addition to playing “how many cheeseburgers can one man possibly eat in a weekend,” I’ll also be trying to get through Nightmare mode on Diablo III and will likely begin Hell mode. Like Erik, I hope to also jump back in and finish ME3 soon, and if things go well this weekend I may have the time to do it. I am also moving soon, so sometime in the next week my gear will have to spend a few days in boxes, but if time permits I will get those two things done and also throw in a smattering of Tribes: Ascend, which incidentally is giving out double XP from Friday until Tuesday morning. I’m still waiting for Spiral Games to make Orion: Dino Beatdown playable for me.

Michael Rohde - Last night I popped in Ghost Recon Future Soldier and played the first couple of missions. It was OK. Tom Clancy games just aren’t what they used to be. For this weekend, I’ll probably go back to Minecraft and some MW3 multiplayer. I’ll probably play a few more missions of Future Soldier.

Ubisoft's Future Soldier is Ghost Recon for Dummies

Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon 2 came out in 2007. Ubisoft had 5 years to work on Future Soldier... and yeah, they made a pretty game and it’s a competent entry for games in general, but does it hold up to the Tom Clancy brand? Does the Tom Clancy brand even mean anything anymore? Sadly, the whole franchise is slipping down the drain.

Gaming's Most Intriguing Boxes

Sometimes, it's neat to take a step back and really appreciate the little things in life that make a big difference. Take, for example, air. It's not like it's on your mind 24 hours a day, but it is utilized by you constantly. How does it hold the oxygen we need? How does it refresh through plant life? There are many other questions that can be asked of air, and education can prove to answer most all of those mysteries.

Today, I'm discussing the life staple of video games: boxes. In the form of pixels, they give us the graphics we need to thrive. But built together into in-game boxes, they provide just as much life saving need as they do mystery and intrigue.

Why? Well, Star Wars Kinect came out recently and it received average reviews. But for some reason this game has been selling like crazy, and the question is why?

The answer is, No, not really. Other questions include, does the game live up to the amazing TV show? Who is the game marketed at? Is it worth a gamer’s time to pick the game up right now? Continue on for the answers and more.

Even though the last Disgaea game that I played was on the PS2 almost 6 years ago I found myself getting excited for Nippon’s latest offering on the PSV - Disgaea 3: Absence of Detention, which is more than just a port of Absence of Justice on PS3. While I don’t remember many of the specifics I did have memories of strategic combat, humorous dialogue and ridiculous character stats come rushing back to me as I popped D3 into my Vita.

The Fun of Minecraft

Minecraft is a truly puzzling game. The graphics are reminiscent of the early days of gaming and the game controls are simple and basic. The game play itself seems staggeringly simple when you first begin. And yet, this game will kick you in the ass. I'm currently playing Minecraft on the Xbox 360 through the Marketplace.

(Even if you don't read this entire article, at least scroll to the bottom to see the screen capture I found online of someone's creating in Minecraft.)

After 12 years of waiting and Blizzard’s rocky launch of the online services for the game, it was well worth it. When the game works it's like a drug. Gamers everywhere cannot put it down, and the question is why?

Agent James McDougal in the Chilean Jungle

Regular readers of GoozerNation might have noticed that I haven't written very many articles lately. That's because I've switched my focus from blogs to book writing. My first book, Chilean Jungle, was published today on Amazon and can be read on Kindles and free Kindle apps for iPads, smartphones, tablets and PCs. The cover art for the book was created by GoozerNation contributor Mark Del Rio and I received excellent feedback from Steve Haverda during the editing process. If you are an Amazon Prime Member, you can download the book for free; otherwise it is $2.99.

I also now have an Author Page set up on Amazon.

Here's a description of the book:

Chilean Jungle introduces the world to Agent James McDougal and the Assassins Intelligence Agency. Agent McDougal teams up with a rogue vigilante who goes by the codename, “Blue Scorpion,” a sexy, dangerous assassin who operates by her own rules. Together, they must take down criminal mastermind Vicente Moreland deep in the Chilean jungle before he can complete his evil plan. This is the first book in this series.

Michael Rohde’s writing style has been compared to fan favorite, sci-fi author Eric Nylund, who has written a few Halo books (Halo: The Fall of Reach, Halo: First Strike and Halo: Ghosts of Onyx). The story and characters will draw you in and each chapter ends with suspense so that you’ll want to keep reading.

“AWESOME ENDING!!! Chilean Jungle ends with you wanting to start the next book. As you read the book you get a feeling of how a VERY YOUNG and NEW James Bond must have started out, before he became silky smooth.”
--Steve Haverda, after reading a sneak peek of Chilean Jungle

This novel features action in an exotic locale with a sexy hero.

What Constitutes an Acceptable Release?

In an industry that ranges from giant companies like EA to tiny start-ups like Pigsels Media, there are many versions of the "rules" under which game companies relate to their customers. One of the most noteworthy aspects of any game company is how it handles customer service and support, particularly around the time when a given game launches or receives a significant update. The speed of an Internet-connected world means that happy and angry customers alike can voice their feelings instantly to the rest of the world, and potentially shape the buying decisions of millions of would-be players. In this environment, where big-ticket games promise epic thrills and millions (billions?) of dollars are spent on games of all prices and types, there is much debate about what constitutes an acceptable release.
