I don't think I'll make it this year, though.

I did the final edit on my commentary on Genesis this month. Now I am starting my two newest books: The History of Israel (commentary on the history portions of the other Mosaic books), and The Law (commentary on the Law portions of the Mosaic books sorted according to subject.)

I began Exodus this AM. This is the hard part, copying and pasting the actual scripture into a word document.
Betty Tracy

We have a caucus so I won't be able to go. Anyway, I'm registered with arhird party.

If I were a Republican, my first choice would be Ron Paul. We have had socialists and socialists-lite running the country or too long. We need the pendulum to swing back to small government and Ron Paul would take us that way.

I also like Santorum. Don't know much about him, but what I do know I like.

Never really liked Newt, but I would take him over Romeny in a heartbeat.

I'ld vote or Romney over Obama. He's better, but not my much.

Now, I would really have liked Cain. I think that would have been a un election. In act Cain always looks like he is having un. That would have been a nice change or president. Oh well.
Betty Tracy

This year has been full of babies of all kinds, though it ended the same way it began; with illness and cow milking.

The cow I won on a radio program last year is still giving milk, and she is the gentlest cow I have ever met. Joy and I enjoy the morning ritual of watching the sunrise as we milk her. It’s a nice time to quietly reflect on God and His creation.

The calf she came with grew up nicely. We put him in the freezer last September. Quite delicious.
Sadly, the calf she birthed last summer died. Dairy cattle are fragile and, unfortunately, have a high mortality rate.

Joy’s rabbits are doing fine as are our chickens, even our three roosters. Our hens managed to hatch out two chicks this year and they both ended up being boys. We are looking forward to a couple of chicken dinners soon.

That’s quite a few babies, isn’t it?

Well, God had one more in mind for us this year.

Joshua Clinton Tracy was born at home on September 25 of this year. He was 8lbs even, my smallest baby, though at 22.5 inches long he is tied for the tallest. He is such a joy to us all; a member of the family we have truly needed. All the children, but especially the girls, love holding and playing with him. If it wasn’t for nursing I am not sure I would get to hold him at all! He is a happy, content baby who enjoys being in the center of everything.

All last year we suffered with one cold or flu after another. Most have been very minor, though a couple came with bad fevers. It’s been more annoying and inconvenient than anything. We did have a few weeks over the summer with no illness, but as soon as the weather cooled off we started again. My midwife says every large family she knows goes through one or two years like this and there doesn’t seem to be anything that can be done but to wait it out. Illness, however, is why I am late with the cards this year.

Other than that minor annoyance, Andy’s gout has been our only health problem of the year. The doctor told him to quit drinking. He told her we are tea-totalers. She told him to quit eating sweetbreads (organ meats). He told her he never has eaten them. She asked if he had any relatives with gout. Bingo! His dad did and we have since found out some of his brothers are likewise afflicted. Unfortunately there isn’t anything you can do about heredity. He has instituted some dietary changes (no sweet peas, daily herbal supplements, lots of water) and that seems to have cleared it up.

School is doing fine. We recently switched curriculums and everyone is learning even more. The only parts everyone didn’t like better were spelling and grammar. I didn’t like this spelling program either, so we’ll switch. But there was a universal, grudging admittance that they had all learned more in this grammar so we will stick with it. This curriculum is more independent study and so takes less of my time so I can do my own thing more, a nice bonus.

Joy has been doing some college-level studies here at home. She had some things she felt she needed to learn outside of a traditional K-12 course and has been concentrating on that. And, of course, it has been wonderful for me to have another adult woman around the house all day. I know I ran the house without her help at one time, but I don’t remember how! And she is mostly in charge of our “farm.” I get to play farmer when the mood strikes but she takes care of it most of the time. She is such a beautiful woman and has well lived up to her name.

Jim is finishing up his studies this year and looking at various options for the next couple of years. He enjoys his guitar and is our handyman as part of his schooling.

Jon is growing a mustache along with extra height. He is now taller than me. He is studying various science fiction stories. I expect him to write a book some day. Maybe something like “Harry Potter goes to the Star Wars?”

Joe is the same height as I am now. He is always building something; origami yesterday, whistles from scratch out of wood today, Legos tomorrow.

Jessie, Jennifer and Jackie are all most fond of playing house, though their “toy stove” doesn’t run off a light bulb and cook a cake for one person. It runs on propane and can cook an entire meal for a large family with desert to boot at the same time.

Jessie is also very fond of animals and helps with the milking daily.

Jennifer is fascinated with medical books and herbs.

Jackie loves to dance and is a beautiful singer.

Jane fell so much in love with our ukulele that grandma bought her her own for her birthday. She calls it her guitar and has a real good sense of rhythm. As soon as her hand/eye coordination is good enough I will begin to teach her cords on it.

Andy’s job is the same as it has been for the last eleven years. We are very thankful he is still working. There are so many in the area that can’t say the same.

I took the year off of my herbalist courses. What with the cow and the pregnancy (growing a baby is hard work!) I felt like it would be too much. I won’t get to it this year either, but maybe next. The midwife studies are going good. Slow, but good.

I finally got my health book, “Caring for Your Masterpiece” finished. I am doing the final edit on my commentary on the book of Genesis now. I hope to have it done in a couple of months.

I just finished editing my older brother’s second book, “Ephesians: Who We Are In-Christ.” He and his wife now have four grandchildren and, since both their boys are out of the Navy, they get to see them often. It will be even better when their daughter-in-law, Ashley is out and back home. We all appreciate her service to our country but miss her here.

Mom and Dad are as busy as usual. Dad has his minister’s meetings every week and is installing a solar heating system in their home. Mom has her hands full just keeping up with Dad.

One day this summer Dad was out working on the irrigation system for their trees. A herd of mustangs wandered up to see what he was doing. There were fifteen of them including several foals. One of the foals let him pet her. When he backed up they amused themselves playing with the hoses. He had to make more repairs later because of their play, but it was worth it.

We’ve had a couple nice visits with my younger brother again this year. His boys sure are growing fast!

Our church started a weight loss support group for our members. All together we lost 139 pounds!
For our vacation this year we went to Scotty’s castle in Death Valley. The children had never seen it before. They really enjoyed themselves, though I think they remember the mule-sized jack rabbits in the campground better. We also went to the train museum in Laws, California. I can’t wait to go back there.

Jane came to me in fright one day saying she had seen a snake in the storeroom. We got out the field guides and she promptly identified it as a Giant Anaconda. A few days later I saw it in my kitchen (not quite Anaconda sized! It was a 15” Gopher snake.) Jim, the ever faithful hunter, eventually caught it and released it outside. I don’t mind the mouse-hunting snakes as long as 1) they are not poisonous and 2) they STAY OUTSIDE!

We were eating in the local Carl’s Jr. one day in December when a man walked up to the children’s table, dropped a gift bag, and mumbled “I’m just the messenger.” Then he hurried out of the restaurant. Jim opened the bag to discover a New Testament Bible and a $50 gift card to Wal-Mart! We were flabbergasted! I suspect an elderly couple who watched us very closely as we came in were the actual gifters, since they stood by the bathrooms watching until we found the card. What fun that must have been for them! I hope to be able to do that kind of thing too some day. We re-gifted the Bible to our favorite clerk there at CJs, but used the card! ☺

All in all, it has been a good year. We hope your’s has been as well.
The country has made no progress toward reaching that goal, he said.

In fact, the government has now given up on it. Now, it proposes to reduce maternal deaths to 11.4 per 100,000 live births by 2020.

While the national rate stood at 12.7 in 2007, and seems virtually stuck there, state rates vary widely.

Only five states met the 2010 standard, and Oregon was not one of them. Its rate was twice as high. Nationally, rates currently range from 1.2 in Maine to 34.9 in Washington, D.C.

***

In “Deadly Delivery,” Amnesty International noted that a woman is five times more likely to die in childbirth in the U.S. than in Greece, which has the world’s lowest maternal mortality rate.

The United Nations releases a new report every five years. The United States ranked 41st in child mortality in the 2005 report, but had slipped nine spots to 50th by 2010.

The United States averaged 12.7 deaths per 100,000 live births in 2009, up from 7.1 a decade earlier. Nearly every industrialized nation in the world does better than that, as do several developing nations, according to the U.N.
of which lead to lasting impairment.

In the U.S., it said, “Severe complications that result in a woman nearly dying, known as a ‘near miss,’ increased by 25 percent between 1998 and 2005. During 2004 and 2005, 68,433 women nearly died in childbirth in the U.S.A. More than a third of all women who give birth in the U.S.A. – 1.7 million women each year – experience some type of complication that has an adverse effect on their health.”

What’s more, at least half of maternal deaths occurring in this country are preventable, according to the National Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
I agree with this Brother. I, too, would prefer to vote for Ron Paul, but I don't think I'll get a chance. I think it will probably be Romney for the GOP becasue he appeals to the moderates. The thing is, the GOP can't win without the conservatives and I'm not at all sure the conservatives will vote for MR. (and no, it isn't because of his religion. It's because he's not much better than a Democrat)
Betty Tracy

At least it has the decency to warn me. the screen blanks out occasionally, keys are falling off, the charging cord doesn't like to stay in.

To add to the frustration, the laptop used just for the kids school is also dying, though not as badly. keys have fallen off (unfortunately a and e among them.) the mousepad is, uhhh, clumsy? sticky? anyway...

I have been looking at the bewildering aray of choices out there. The simplest might be to just pick a cheapy used one (or two) off of Amazon. We have had failry good luck with that. I can get one for about $130.

But I noticed at Target the other day that a brand new, though tiny, laptop was only $250. Its worth something to have a machine no one else has ever messed with and has totally up to date software.

Then I began looking at tablets. Eye, eye, eye, eye, eye....

So here's what I need from you: What device(s) would you recommend I buy?

laptop 1: Used for word processing (I write my books on it), facebook, blogging, maybe music and the occasional youtube. I store all my books on a thumb drive.

laptop 2: Used for light word processing (need thumbdrive port), school DVD and computer programs, searching Amazon (though I have considered disabling this feature so if internet wasn't included I am ok with that.)

I'm not too concerned about speed on any of these. Would a tablet with a bluetooth keyboard work?
Betty Tracy

In fact, they are no longer celebrating Christmas altogether but that is another post.

Many look at Jeremiah 10:3-4 and decide that Christmas trees are unbiblical.

"For the customs of the people [are] vain: for [one] cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe. They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not."

However, the Message Bible words it like this "An idol is nothing but a tree chopped down, then shaped by a woodsman's ax. They trim it with tinsel and balls, use hammer and nails to keep it upright."

Obviously this is talking about idol worship.

I like the way Mark Driscol words how we should approach different issues like this one; We need to receive, redeem, or reject everything from our culture.

If it is good and righteous as it is we simply receive it (like Thanksgiving, a specific time to give thanks for a year's worth of blessings.)

If it can be changed to bring glory to God, we should do that (like Easter and Christmas which can be used to bring attention to God's plan of salvation.)

If it is so bad we can't possibly bring something good out of it we should reject it (like prostitution.)

Now i am not going to bow down and worship our tree which the Bible specifically forbids (and was the subject of the quoted verses.)

So why do I have a Christmas tree in my home?

The tree itself reminds me of my Savior "whom they slew and hanged on a tree:" Acts 10:39

The lights remind me that "Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life." John 8:12

The red ornaments remind me of Jesus "In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace;" Colosians 1 :14

The white ornaments remind me of His purity: "For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as [we are, yet] without sin." Hebrews 4:15

The Blue ornaments remind me of Truth: "And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." John 8:32

The gold ornaments remind me of the value of Jesus "And he hath on [his] vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS." Revelation 19:16

The Angel on the top of my tree reminds me of the angels who heralded His birth: "And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying; Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men." Luke 2:13,14

The star on the top of many trees reminds me of the star that led the shepherds to Christ; "... and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was." Matthew 2:9

That tree in my living room is not an Ido I bow down and worship, but a reminder of my Jesus, the One I DO worship with all my heart.
Betty Tracy
Does it strike anyone as odd that all those people don't need to be at work to earn a living? They are wearing nice clothes and using iphones and eating just fine so they are getting money from somewhere. Everyone I know couldn't possibly go to these protests due to job obligations. Just seems odd to me for a bunch of people who are obviously richer than average to be protesting against the rich. Just saying....
Betty Tracy

He sang with Me! He was making noise and when I talked to him he acted happy but not quite satisfied. At Daddy's sugestion, when Josh began "talking" again, I began to sing. He grinned the biggest grin ever and joined me, cooing until the song ended:-)

Another cold going through. This is getting ridiculous. I have one running a fever (and jumping on the couch, but that's another story), one coughing, two with sore throats and one with a headache. I might start making them all take eldrberry, echinecia and c every day for the rest of their lives!

Bill Cosby - "I'm 76 and Tired"

"I'm 76 and I'm Tired"

I'm 76. Except for brief period in the 50's when I was doing my National Service, I've worked hard since I was 17. Except for some some serious health challenges, I put in 50-hour weeks, and didn't call in sick in nearly
40 years. I made a reasonable salary, but I didn't inherit my job or my income, and I worked to get where I am. Given the economy, it looks as
though retirement was a bad idea, and I'm tired. Very tired.

I'm tired of being told that I have to "spread the wealth" to people who don't have my work ethic. I'm tired of being told the government will take the money I earned, by force if necessary, and give it to people too lazy
to earn it.

I'm tired of being told that Islam is a "Religion of Peace," when every day I can read dozens of stories of Muslim men killing their sisters, wives and
daughters for their family "honor"; of Muslims rioting over some slight offense; of Muslims murdering Christian and Jews because they aren't "believers"; of Muslims burning schools for girls; of Muslims stoning
teenage rape victims to death for "adultery"; of Muslims mutilating the genitals of little girls; all in the name of Allah, because the Qur'an and Shari'a law tells them to.

I'm tired of being told that out of "tolerance for other cultures" we must let Saudi Arabia and other Arab countries use our oil money to fund mosques
and madrassa Islamic schools to preach hate in Australia, New Zealand, UK, America and Canada, while no one from these countries are allowed to fund a church, synagogue or religious school in Saudi Arabia or any other Arab country to teach love and tolerance..

I'm tired of being told I must lower my living standard to fight global warming, which no one is allowed to debate.

I'm tired of being told that drug addicts have a disease, and I must help support and treat them, and pay for the damage they do. Did a giant germ
rush out of a dark alley, grab them, and stuff white powder up their noses or stick a needle in their arm while they tried to fight it off?

I'm tired of hearing wealthy athletes, entertainers and politicians of all parties talking about innocent mistakes, stupid mistakes or youthful mistakes, when we all know they think their only mistake was getting
caught. I'm tired of people with a sense of entitlement, rich or poor.

I'm really tired of people who don't take responsibility for their lives and actions. I'm tired of hearing them blame the government, or discrimination
or big-whatever for their problems.

I'm also tired and fed up with seeing young men and women in their teens and early 20's be-deck them selves in tattoos and face studs, thereby making
themselves un-employable and claiming money from the Government.

Yes, I'm damn tired. But I'm also glad to be 76.. Because, mostly, I'm not going to have to see the world these people are making. I'm just sorry for my granddaughter and her children. Thank God I'm on the way out and not on the way in."

All I can add is "Amen."
Betty Tracy

My chiro charges $27 per visit. The better quality one up the hill charges $50. The last time I went to Urgent care (which most insurances WILL pay for, it cost $150 and that was years ago. Well it didn't quite work out.

Our land is rocks held together with clay and sagebrush, so just throwing seeds in the ground is absolutly out of the question. Raised beds it is...

Except I always have better priorities than wood for gardens.

and dirt. I have trouble buying dirt when I own more than an acre of land. But our dirt isn't exactly "bread basket" material. Pot-making maybe. Plant growing, nope.

Then there are the critters. Our gardens have been eaten over the years by quail, jack rabbits, cows, mustangs (!), and our own dog (Bear, who passed away a couple of years ago, ate all my roses. I even wrapped them in barbed wire to keep him off and it didn't slow him down. I gave up.)

Add to all that the moisture zapping wind and heat we get every August and :-P

Despite all this we keep trying.

A few years ago the kids and I tried our hands at building beds out of rocks. It worked fairly well, though not as well as wood. But rocks we have in plenty (I keep threatening to paint eyes on all of them and put up a sign that says "Pet Rock Ranch." I'ld have made a fortune at teh hieght of the trend.)

Last year I got the idea to move the beds we do have up the hill to the "orchard" (a whole 7 trees, none of which produce anything worth mentioning.) and fence them all in together. It worked! only the quail and jack rabbits got in:-) This year I will line the stock fencing with chicken wire and see if we can reduce that to just quail.

And dirt? Now that I have a cow all I need to do is mix in her leavings with some plant matter, which she has kindly done for me by being a sloppy eater.

So this morning the children and I went up and outlined more beds inside the fence. Each child picked a bed or two for their own. Two of my dc have theirs all ready to plant already!

And the girls have all taken a liking to watering daily.

Maybe this year we can actually have that garden i have always wanted:-)
Betty Tracy

(You can read about it Here). I asked my children a couple of days ago what they thought about doing things the new way (mostly Abeka, all but Bible independently.) They unanamously said they preferd our new way. They all like having control of their own scheule (deciding if they do math first or science, deciding to just sit down and read the entire literature text at once and having it over with, etc.) and feel they have learned more to boot. This meshes with what I have observed so we will continue this course.

Now that our first complete year of mostly Abeka is done here is how things stand:

Math= We will continue with Math-U-See and Calculaddars (with Timez Attack computer game:-)

Science, Health, History, Geography, Literature= Abeka all the way. Definitly.

Art= Drawing textbook. I simply have not found any better curriculum for teaching drawing. I am still looking for something for art appriciation, though.

Music= lessons with Grandma plus Piano for quitters, and Music Ace computer program.

Spanish=Rosetta Stone

Phonics= Abeka

Penmanship= Abeka except possibly for my 7yo. She seems to be needing something more basic like handwriting without tears.

Grammar= Abeka, mostly because I can't find anything better. Abeka is a lot of work; somtimes too much work for my children. However, they have all learned more this year than any other so we will stay here.

Spelling= did I ever mention I hate spelling? It was my worst subject in high school (at the end of 8th grade I showed on standardized tests that I could do 8th grade work as well as a 12th grader...except for spelling. I scored at 4th grade for spelling).

Abeka spelling is simply not working. NO ONE finished their book.

Or even got half done. (I was having them learn most of the words in each lesson before going on to the next lesson)

The words are not very well connected and, well, no one is learning how to spell:-(

We will move to AVKOs Sequential Spelling for next year, though I won't use it according to directions.

The way AVKO is designed to be used is much too teacher intensive. We used it for a year that way and it just took too long and was way too slow for anyone to learn.

Now I will assign each child one book. They will study each lesson and then be tested on it each day. What words they don't pass they will study the next day plus enough words from the list to make an age-appropiate-length list. This will work well because of the built in review and phonetic connection of the words.

I like this program becasue of the phonetical order of the words. As they point out in their ads, you may run across "nice" in a typical first grade speller, "rice" in a second, "twice" in a third and "ice" in a fourth becasue those are the grades those words are introduced in the readers and science books.

The lists in the first of these books starts:

Day1
in
sin
pin
spin

Day 2
I
pins
sins
spins
kin
skin
win
twin

Day 3
thin
pinned
sinned
I
shin
skins
wins
twins
be
begin
chin
she

Since the words just build on each other, By the sixth day they can spell "beginnings." Yes, that happened with my kids when we used it before. and notice that they review spelling the word "in" 20 times, "sin" three times, and "pin" five times in the first three days just through the tests.

I think this will really work for us. I hope it will becasue if it doesn't we are out of other options:-(
Betty Tracy
Years ago I bought Timez Attack computer game for my children. In this game you are a little knome (my children call him Dobbie). You have to fight your way out of danger by throughing the correct answers at multiplication problems. Winning this game takes the same skill as going through a deck of flash cards but is far more entertaining. The children begged to ge to play it because they hadn't yet rescured their Dobbie! Their multiplication speed increased dramaticly. And best of all, it takes no work from me like flash cards do:-)

Unfortunatly our disk got scratched so they haven't been able to play for a while.

They just downloaded a demonstration for the new version. This one includes spaceships, the choice of a girl "Dobbie", and addition, subtraction, and division!

My 4yo is asking to do math:-)

This is definitly on the list for next tax time!
Betty Tracy

And that's exactly what it is: bullying. We as a society are so set against [bullying] and want to teach each other how to love, respect, and all that crap - yet the minute we see someone with more than the prerequisite number of kids coming our way, we immediately snap to judgment. There is such negative bias against larger families, even those with far fewer than 20 kids, because we are now living in a "two-kid world." Anything more than that is often considered a burden or an inconvenience"

The point people need to remember about the Duggers and others of us with larger than "normal" families (I have 9:-) is that we don't do anything special or unnatural to have our big families. Those with smaller families are generally (though not always) the ones doing unnatural things like taking drugs and having surguries, all to keep their bodies from functioning like they are designed to do. I bet sex lives are equal on average. We just haven't broke the plumbing. There are some very good reasons (including some health) to allow God's design to function naturally.
Betty Tracy
