Take a minute to read it here:</p> <p><a target="_blank" href="http://online.wsj.com/article_email/SB10001424052748704111704575355311122648100-lMyQjAxMTAwMDEwNTExNDUyWj.html">“Wannabe Cool” Christianity</a></p> <p>I was back and forth on this article. I agreed with a few of the points on one hand, but disagreed with many points on the other. The main idea that I feel doesn’t come across in this op-ed is that with all things (including cultural relevance), a church should err on the side of caution.</p> <p>Many people will say that this leads to a church unwilling to change and flow with the times and eventually alienate people. This is not my point. A church needs to take these new ideas to experiment and test all with a point of caution to say “it works” or “not for us”.</p> <p>Stepping through the article, I’ve always found it weird when pastors do things like quoting Stephen Colbert or using Beyonce lyrics to make a point. These uses always sound like endorsements of the people which the church should avoid. Using them as illustrations do not feel this way though. Again, using them with caution. I also can tell when pastor has been sent to a stylist to make there image more hip, because you can always tell they don’t feel comfortable in it.</p> <p>I also agree with the writer’s points about Shock Topics. Many of these topics should be discussed in the context of the church, but when they are used as a sermon or even a special event handled by the lead pastor, these things feel extremely forced and uncomfortable.</p> <p>Simply put there’s nothing wrong with a church trying to be culturally relevant to today’s people. There’s no issue integrating social media into your Sunday service. Churches should bring up relevant topics to touch people’s lives with what they are dealing with today. But a church should also remember what it’s there to do. Churches are there to build a fellowship of believers that can grow together to be used by God in their community and around the world.
