Windows 8.1 Update not listed in the Store

Issue:- When you try to update windows 8 to Windows 8.1 you are not able to do so as windows 8.1 update is not listed in the stores .

Solution:- Please follow the steps mentioned below

1. Ensure the BIOS is updated.

2. Ensure that the Windows is updated (all the updates are installed), especially KB2871389 or else download the update manually from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2871389.

3. Ensure the current running OS is Windows 8/Windows 8 Pro and not a Volume License, Enterprise Edition of Windows 8, or a Preview version of Windows 8/8.1

4. Run WSRESET.exe from a command line (Press the Windows button + R on the keyboard, on the run box type command and then press enter, on the command prompt type WSRESET.exe and then press enter).

5. Sync you App License:

a) On the Start screen, tap or click Store to open the Windows Store.

b) Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, and then tap Settings. (If you're using a mouse, point to the lower-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer up, and then click Settings.)

c) Tap or click App updates.

d) Tap or click Sync licenses.

6. Make sure that the following services and running: Windows Update & BITS.

7. Open Internet Explorer, and type the following in the address bar

ms-windows-store:windowsupgrade

8. Open the command prompt with admin privileges, and type the following command:

powershell -ExecutionPolicy Unrestricted Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register $Env:SystemRoot\WinStore\AppxManifest.xml

After doing the doing the above steps if you are still facing problem refer solution 2

SOLUTION 2:

1. go to Programs and Features on the left click on view installed updated. Look for KB2871389. Once you find it uninstall the same and restart the computer.

2. Run WSRESET.exe from a command line (Press the Windows button + R on the keyboard, on the run box type command and then press enter, on the command prompt type WSRESET.exe and then press enter).

3. Download and install the update KB2871389 manually from http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2871389 and restart the computer (This should resolve the issue for sure)

4. Go to stores now you should find the Windows 8.1 update ready to be downloaded and installed.

Secure Boot isn't configured correctly after Win 8.1 update watermark appears at the bottom right hand corner

Solution

a) If the OS is WIN 8 Home ,Ensure SECURE BOOT option is enabled in BIOS to resolve the issue, if enabling secure boot renders the system to No boot , Change the secure boot to disabled again, Keep the computer connected to the internet for pulling the latest windows updates .

b) In some of the cases SECURE BOOT is grayed out in the BIOS. The customer can continue to use his system normally with no impact on performance.

c) If the OS is WIN 8 Pro , follow the steps below to resolve the issue

· Swipe the charms bar

· Touch search

· Key in gpedit.msc

· Touch gpedit

· Then under Computer Configuration

· Touch Administrative templates

· Then All settings on the right window pane

· Then scroll down to use enhanced boot configuration data validation profile

· Touch enabled option and touch apply option

· Exit and Restart

d) From Windows:

· go to Settings charm > Change PC settings > Update and Recovery > Recovery > Advanced Startup: Restart now. When the PC reboots, go to Troubleshoot > Advanced Options: UEFI Firmware Settings.

· Find the Secure Boot setting, and if possible, set it to Enabled. This option is usually in either the Security tab, the Boot tab, or the Authentication tab.

On some PCs, select Custom, and then load the Secure Boot keys that are built into the PC.

If the PC does not allow you to enable Secure Boot, try resetting the BIOS back to the factory settings.

· Save changes and exit. The PC reboots.

· If the PC is not able to boot after enabling Secure Boot, go back into the BIOS menus, disable Secure Boot, and try to boot the PC again.

· In some cases, you may need to refresh or reset your PC to its original state before you can turn on Secure Boot.

· If the above steps don’t work, and you still want to use the Secure Boot feature, contact your manufacturer for help.

System black halt after Windows8.1 update

[Symptom]
After Windows 8.1 update, the system display may go to black and the mouse cursor can be seen when the mouse is moved.

[Cause]

AMD PowerXpress systems (have two GPU(Intel + AMD)) have this issue. PowerXpress system require removing previously installed graphics driver process, but the update doesn’t have the removal process built in.

[Troubleshooting Steps]

1. Hold power button for 10 to 15sec to shut down the system.

2. Press power button to start system.

3. Repeat Step 1 & 2, for three to four times or till the time you see "advanced repair option" (I really wont suggested doing more than 5times if you are still not getting the "advanced repair option" wait for some time and then try .

4. After that, you may see Select see "advanced repair option" in Recovery page

5. Click on the Troubleshoot option (One more way to get the troubleshoot option is to hard shutdown the computer when the system is booting up).

6. Now select Advanced Options.

7. Now choose the Windows Startup Settings option

8. Finally hit the Restart button (For some system it may say "Windows Startup Setting" both are one and the same).

9. when your PC reboots you will be able to boot into Safe Mode from the familiar looking Advanced Boot Options screen (For Some System the screen may be blue) .

If you get the above screen you have to use arrow keys to select the options and press enter

If you get the above screen then you have press the number key on the keyboard (For Example: you want to go into safe mode with networking you have press Number "4" or "F4 on the keyboard)

10. System boots in Safe mode

11. After boot up and reach the desktop, press hot key, "Windows + x" and select "Device manager"

12. Double click the item, "Intel(R) HD Graphics 4000" / "AMD Radeon HD 8600/8700M" under display adapter.

13. Move to driver tab and press the button, "Update Driver”

14. Choose, "Browse my computer for driver software.

15. Choose, "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer"

16. Select the Intel GFX driver, Intel(R) HD Graphics 4000 Version: 9.17.10.2875 / AMD Radeon HD 8700M Series, and click the next button

17. Restart the Computer now the system should be able to boot in the normal mode. If updating the drivers does not solve the issue you can try to disabling / uninstall the Video Driver this would be a workaround.

Windows 8 Metro Apps unable to connect to internet but desktop apps can go online.

Windows 8 is a relatively new OS and all the solution Microsoft suggests for this problem is to refresh the PC. But if you have a lot of valuable programs installed, you would probably not want to do that.

The problem is actually with a setting with internet sharing, which makes metro style internet explorer act in a very restrictive manner. All you have to do is turn off sharing. Following are the steps to do this:

1) Go to the charms menu.
2) click on the settings option.
3) Click on the "Internet access" option.
4) Right click on the active connection.
5) Click on "Turn sharing on or off".
6) Click on "No, don't turn on sharing or connect to devices".

Know Your apps will be able to connect to internet now.

How To Get Into Safe mode (Windows Advanced Option) in Windows 8

One of the most common steps when troubleshooting a PC is to boot into safe mode, safe mode with networking. For a long time this has been achieved by pressing the F8 key for previous Windows Operating system, this all have changed with Windows 8 and its Automatic Repair mode. But the question remains what if we want to go into Safe Mode / Safe Mode With Networking?

You can still have Safe Mode, however, it is buried deep into the recovery options of Windows 8. While just mashing the F8 key as we all know will boot you into automatic recovery mode, you can still manually access the recovery options by pressing the Shift+F8 key combination or boot the computer to the desktop and from there you can launch safe mode. Let's see different ways of booting the computer in safe mode / safe mode with networking

Method 1

a) Hold the Shift button and Press the F8 key, this will sometimes boot you into the new advanced “recovery mode”, Click on advanced repair options.

b) Click on the Troubleshoot option (One more way to get the troubleshoot option is to hard shutdown the computer when the system is booting up).

c) Now select Advanced Options.

d) Now choose the Windows Startup Settings option

e) Finally hit the Restart button (For some system it may say "Windows Startup Setting" both are one and the same).

f) when your PC reboots you will be able to boot into Safe Mode from the familiar looking Advanced Boot Options screen (For System the screen may be blue) .

If you get the above screen you have to use arrow keys to select the options and press enter

Method 2

a) This method requires that you are able to booted into Windows. Press the Win+R key combination and type msconfig in the run box and hit enter.

b) Click on Boot

You can also choose the type of Safe Mode you want to boot into:

Minimal is normal safe mode.
Alternate Shell is safe mode with command prompt
Network is safe mode with networking.

c) Once you have selected the option you will get the below screen click on don't show this message again and then click restart

d) You PC will be booted into Safe Mode automatically.

e) If you restart you PC you will just keep getting booted into Safe Mode, to stop this open msconfig again and uncheck the Safe Boot option, then hit the ok button (Please refer to step a & b).

f) Finally Restart your Machine know you should be able to boot the computer in Normal Mode.

Method 3

a) First use your finger to make a sliding motion from bottom to top on the illuminated screen in Modern UI, then click once All Applications. If you are using a mouse, please right click once All Applications.

b) Then on the command comprompt character use your finger to slide from top to bottom, and click once more Executable by system administrator. If you are using a mouse, click on the command prompt character and right click, then click once more Executable by system administrator.

c) If there is user account control, please click once yes.

d) Click to input Bcdedit /set {bootmgr} displaybootmenu yes,when completed press the Enter key on the keyboard. If you need to cancel the prompt to enter options at startup, simply change Yes to No.

e) Once completed, please restart your computer, then press F8 to enter setup screen upon startup, then press F4, F5, F6 or 4, 5, 6 to enter safe mode, Safe Mode With Networking, Safe Mode With Command Prompt.

Method 4

a) On the charms Bar click on "Setting"

b) Click on "Change PC Settings"

c) Under PC Setting first click on "General" . Once you click on general on the other side you will see Advanced Startup click on "Restart Now"

d) Click on the Troubleshoot option

e) Now select Advanced Options.

f) Now click on the Startup Settings option

g) Finally hit the Restart button (For some system it may say "Windows Startup Setting" both are one and the same).

h) when your PC reboots you will be able to boot into Safe Mode

If you get the above screen then you have press the number key on the keyboard (For Example: you want to go into safe mode with networking you have press Number "5" or "F5 on the keyboard)

How To Kill Processes from Command Prompt

I'm sure you are familiar with the traditional way to kill or end a process in Windows using Task Manager. This method is effective but not nearly as fun as killing a process in Command Prompt. Additionally, killing processes in Command Prompt provides much more control and the ability to end multiple processes at once.

All of this is possible with the TaskKill command. First, let's cover the basics. You can kill a process by the process ID (PID) or by image name (EXE filename).

Open up an Administrative level Command Prompt and run tasklist to see all of the running processes:

C:\>tasklist

In the example above you can see the image name and the PID for each process. If you want to kill the notepad process run:

C:\>taskkill /IM notepad.exe /F

C:\>taskkill /PID 784 /F

The /f flag is kills the process forcefully. Failure to use the /F flag will result in nothing happening in some cases. One example is whenever I want to kill the explorer.exe process I have to use the /F flag or else the process just does not terminate.

If you have multiple instances of an image open such as multiple firefox.exe processes, running the taskkill /IM firefox.exe command will kill all instances. When you specify the PID only the specific instane of firefox will be terminated.

The real power of taskkill are the filtering options that allow you to use the following variables and operators.

Variables:

STATUS

IMAGENAME

PID

SESSION

CPUTIME

MEMUSAGE

USERNAME

MODULES

SERVICES

WINDOWTITLE

Operators:

eq (equals)

ne (not equal)

gt (greater than)

lt (less than)

ge (greater than or equal)

"*" is the wildcard.

You can use the variables and operators with the /FI filtering flag. For example, let's say you want to end all processes that have a window title that starts with "Internet":

C:\>taskkill /FI "WINDOWTITLE eq Internet*" /F

How about killing all processes running under the Steve account:

C:\>taskkill /FI "USERNAME eq Steve" /F

It is also possible to kill a process running on a remote computer with taskkill. Just run the following to kill notepad.exe on a remote computer called SteveDesktop:

C:\>taskkill /S SteveDesktop /U RemoteAccountName /P RemoteAccountPassword /IM notepad.exe /F

To learn more about taskkill run it with the /? command just like any other Windows command.

How to Recover Deleted Photos, Pictures and Other Files (Recuva)

Have you ever accidentally deleted a photo or file from your computer or digital camera....? Even if you clear the recycle bin, there is still a chance your pictures can be recovered.

Even though a file was deleted there is a good chance the contents of the file are still around. When a file is deleted the contents of the file are not removed. Only a pointer to the file in the file system table is deleted.

Time is your worst enemy when restoring files. When the pointer to the file has been deleted the operating system can use that storage space to write and store new data. The longer it has been since you realized the file was deleted increases the chance any remaining file content has been overwritten.

It is very important to immediately stop writing to the storage device that previously contained your pictures so that the old file contents are not overwritten. For example, don’t take any more pictures with your digital camera because new pictures will overwrite the deleted files.

Next, you will need to use a utility to reassemble the file remains back into the original files. Use a free utility called Recuva by Piriform.

After the utility is installed start it up and click cancel on the Recuva Wizard screen know select the drive you want to scan for the deleted files.

There are two ways to scan for deleted files.

Method1:- First we are going to use the default scan method by just clicking Scan.

The results pane will be populated when the scan is completed. Files that are green can be recovered by other files that are yellow or red have been overwritten. Previews are shown for some files when you click on them.

Check the boxes next to the files you want to restore and click Recover.

Select a location to restore the files to and click OK. Make sure you select a different storage device/drive than where the files are currently located so you don’t overwrite the file remains.

Your files will now be recovered.

Method 2 :- DEEP SCAN

Running a deep scan will check the actual sectors on the storage device for file remains. You can enable this scan option by clicking Options on the main screen.

Click on the Actions tab, check Deep Scan and click OK.

Now just click Scan again and go for a walk because the deep scan can take a while depending on the size of the drive.

When the scan is completed restore the files the same way discussed above for the normal scan.

How To Refresh Or Reset Your Windows 8 PC

REFRESH:- You can use Refresh option for your PC in situations where your PC frequently becomes unstable and starts behaving in an erratic manner. The Refresh option gives a little boost to PC performance by restoring your PC system settings to default and removing all the applications installed from third-party resources.

RESET:- Reset option can be used before selling your PC or when you want to start afresh by removing everything except core Windows 8 system files and utilities. The Reset utility attempts to reset all the changes which you have made to the system in order to bring the system back to original factory settings.

Here I will show you how to use REFRESH and RESET option from General window in Windows 8 PC Settings. To quickly open PC Settings, bring up charms bar using Windows + C hotkey combination,

1) Click Setting on Charms Bar (REFRESH and RESET)

2) Now Click More PC Settings to open PC Settings (REFRESH and RESET)

How to Use REFRESH for your PC

The Refresh your PC option is present underneath Language control in General window. The Refresh PC utility checks whether the system files, Windows registry, and other important system components are working fine or not; on finding issues with Windows files, it will attempt to repair your PC. The Refresh PC utility doesn’t remove any of your personnel files, including document, video, music and other types of files during the PC refresh process. However, it is recommended to create backup of applications which fetch data directly from Windows native utilities to restore them later.

When you click Get Started under Refresh your PC, it will show the changes which will be made during the process. Insert Windows 8 installation disk, and then click Next followed by Refresh to reboot the system.

First, it will start preparing your system for a complete Refresh.

When Windows 8 restarts, you will see boot screen with refresh process progress at the bottom.

After the refresh process ends, you will be taken back to Windows Start Screen, where you can find all default Windows 8 utilities and widgets. Now restore applications for which you created backup for, and then reboot the system.

NOTE:- Refresh feature doesn’t ask you to enter Windows activation key and configure Windows settings.

How to Use RESET for your PC

The Reset your PC option is present underneath Language control in General window. Windows 8 Reset utility provides one-stop solution to those who are planning to sell their Windows 8 PC without leaving any chances of recovering personal information and other important data from the PC. The Windows 8 Reset utility ensures that all of your personal data along with user-installed applications will be removed. After removing all the user-data, it will attempt to reset your PC settings back to default.

To begin, click Get Started under Reset your PC option.

For disk with multiple partitions, it asks you to choose entire hard disk to perform the cleanup operation or only the disk where Windows 8 is installed. Just select the required option to move to next step.

Now, specify the type of cleanup operation – Thoroughly or Quickly. The Thorough disk cleanup operation removes all the files from selected disk(s), deletes all the installed applications, and makes data irrecoverable, whereas the quick cleanup option simply deletes your files and installed applications.

Like Windows 8 Refresh utility, it will reboot your system and start resetting Windows to default settings, The time it takes depends upon the number of changes made to your system and total size of your data. Once system reboots, it starts preparing your system for complete PC reset. At the bottom, you will see Resetting your PC progress.

After the Resetting your PC process finishes, it will reboot your system to update Windows 8 registry settings, find attached devices, and then make identified devices ready for Windows 8.

Once the process is finished, you will be asked to enter the Product key. Enter the license key and click Next. If you want to enter the license key later, click Skip. (Please Note for Some System Manufacture it may not ask for the Product Key as it is pre-injected on the Motherboard)

Now, accept License terms and click Accept to proceed further. It will now start loading Windows 8, and you will see Personalization window. Follow the on-screen instructions, enter details where required, and let Windows 8 prepare a fresh desktop for you.

These system repair utilities have made Windows 8 reinstallation and repair processes not only easy but also free from any type of system failures and other risks. The Reset and Refresh repair options can also be accessed from Startup Menu under Troubleshoot window, which includes advance system repair options such as, System Restore, System Image Recovery, etc.

You may experience that DVD drive is not recognized in Windows 8

METHOD:- 1

Symptom: One of the common issues many Windows 8 CP users are experiencing is missing optical drive icon. According to users, after installing the operating system or upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 8, Windows 8 doesn’t recognize the DVD drive. Because of this the DVD drive is not appearing neither in Windows Explorer or nor in Device Manager.

Resolution:

1. Run Command Prompt as an Administrator. Type cmd in Windows 8 Metro UI and press cltr+shift+enter

2. Type following and enter

reg.exe add "HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\atapi\Controller0" /f /v EnumDevice1 /t REG_DWORD /d 0x00000001

3. Reboot the system

METHOD 2

If Method 1 does not work then download and run the free utility named CD-DVD Icon Repair

CD-DVD Icon Repair is a portable tool that helps you when Windows doesn’t recognize the CD/DVD drive. Even though the program was designed for Windows 7, it works perfectly fine in Windows 8 as well. Launch the tool, click Repair CD-DVD Icon button and then restart your PC.

How to uninstall Trend Micro program using the Trend Micro Diagnostic Toolkit (Win XP / Vista / 7)

1. Download the Trend Micro Diagnostic Toolkit.

2. Click Run when the File Download window appears. The Trend Micro Diagnostic Toolkit window appears after the download finishes (For any reason if your not able to go online and download the Trend Micro Diagnostic Toolkit you can go to C:\program files\ Trend Micro and search for the uninstaller after which you can continue with the steps mentioned below).

3. Once the text is pasted into Notepad, click File, click Save As, and then type Msirepair.reg for the name of the file.

Troubleshooting USB Connections (Windows 7 / Vista)

Where can I find the driver that upgrades my USB 1.0/1.1 ports to USB 2.0?

If you have upgraded your computer to Windows Vista, you will not find a driver upgrade to update USB hardware from 1 to 2. USB 1.0, 1.1, and 2.0 refer to hardware specifications - not software. However, if you are receiving PC messages stating that you should connect your USB 2.0 device into a high speed USB port and you know that you have a USB 2.0 port on your computer, there are certain USB controller upgrades that have been made available through Microsoft Windows Update that can better enable USB 2.0 on your computer. To get these updates use the following steps:

1) Connect to the Internet if the computer is not already connected.

1) Open Device Manager: click Start , and enter device manager into the Start Search field.

2) Click the plus sign (+ ) next to Other Devices.

3) If there are any references to USB, such as USB Host Controller, right-click the name and select Update Driver Software. Follow the information given to download and install any available updates. The name in Other Devices should be automatically be removed and then added to the Universal Serial BUS Controllers category.

4) Test the USB device again. If the message appears, continue using these steps. If the message no longer opens, you are done.

5) If there are no more references to USB in the other devices category, click the plus sign (+) next to Universal Serial Bus Controllers.

6) Right-click the name of one of the Universal Host controllers and select Update Driver Software.

7) Follow the screens that open to find and install any available updates through Microsoft.

8) If any downloads were installed, test the USB device to see if the message continue to appear.

Important information about Legacy USB Support

Use the following steps to enable or disable USB Legacy Support on the computer:

1. Turn on or restart the computer.

2. When the first screen displays press F10 repeatedly until the setup screen displays.

3. Use the Left and Right arrow keys to select the Advanced tab.

4. Use the Up , Down , keys to select Legacy USB Support and then press Enter .

5. Use the Up , Down , and Enter keys to select Enabled or Disabled and Enter .

6. Press F10 to save settings and exit.

USB devices are detected by Windows but are not working properly

Perform the following steps to troubleshoot the USB port when a USB device is not working properly:

1. Unplug all USB devices connected to the computer. This includes thumb drives, printers, and video cameras. If you are using a USB mouse and keyboard, temporarily use PS/2 devices if available, otherwise leave them connected.

2. Click Start , right-click Computer , and select Properties .

3. Click Device Manager .

4. Click the (+ ) plus sign next to the Universal Serial Bus Controllers.

5. Select USB Root Hub , and then click Uninstall icon. Continue until all USB Root Hubs are removed.

9) Close Device Manager and restart the computer.

10) If the USB device that is having problems came with software and it was not previously installed, install the software now following the manufacturer provided instructions.

11) Reconnect the USB device that was having problems and test it to see if it works.

The device should now work properly. If problems persist, continue using these steps.

12) Click Start , right-click Computer , and select Properties .

13) Click Device Manager .

14) Click the (+ ) plus sign next to the Universal Serial Bus Controllers. Double-click the device or USB Root Hub.

On the General tab, one of the following four conditions is displayed:

Ø Unknown Device - If the device displays as an unknown device, check the following items:

o If the USB device is connected to a USB port on a keyboard or hub, unplug it and plug it into a USB port on the computer.

o The device may not be getting enough power. If other USB devices are connected to the system, remove all other USB devices (except keyboard and mouse) and try a different available USB port. If this solves the issue, use a powered USB hub to power more devices.

Ø Other Device - If the device displays under Other Devices the USB ports are working but the device software drivers need to be installed. Unplug the USB device and install the software drivers.

Ø Device Name Displays - If the name of the device is shown, the USB port is working properly. There is a physical problem with the device or there is an issue with the device software drivers. Try disconnecting the USB device, uninstalling the device's software (if any), and then reinstalling the software. Restart the computer and try connecting again. Refer to the manufacturer of the USB device for more information.

Ø Device Not Listed - If the device is not listed at all, continue to the next section; USB device not detected by the system.

USB device not detected by Windows

Perform the following steps to troubleshoot the USB port when the computer does not detect a USB device:

1. Check Device Manager to see if the device displays under the USB section or the Other Devices section. To do this, follow the procedures below:

a. Click Start , right-click Computer , and select Properties .

b. Click Device Manager .

c. Click the (+ ) plus sign next to the Universal Serial Bus controllers and next to Other Device section.

Check for the USB device under the Universal Serial Bus controllers or under the Other Devices section.

d. If the device is found under Universal Serial Bus controllers or Other Devices , click the reference name for the "unknown" device, and then click Uninstall icon to remove the device.

e. Close Device Manager and restart the computer.

f. If the USB device that is having problems came with software and it was not previously installed, install the software now following the manufacturer provided instructions.

g. Reconnect the USB device that was having problems and test it to see if it works.

The device should now work properly. Continue if the device name cannot be found in Device Manager .

2) If the USB device is missing, double-click the USB Root Hub , click the Power tab, and then click Power Properties (if it is shown). The available ports and power usage is shown. If the displayed power is over 500mA, remove the devices and use a powered HUB. To check the properties of a HUB, double-click HUB and the HUB information window opens.

3) Remove high-speed USB cables that are over three meters and use high-speed cables that are less than three meters. Only use high-speed cables less than three meters with high-speed USB devices (Multifunction devices, scanners, and cameras).

4) If the USB device is connected to a USB port on a keyboard, unplug it and plug it into a USB port on the PC or into a powered HUB.

5) There may be an issue with the USB port. Try plugging into a different USB port. If the USB device displays in Device Manager after plugging the cable into a different port, then uninstall and reinstall the USB device software driver.

6) Consult the manufacturer of the device for support if the device still fails to display.

When you click the Safely Remove Hardware icon in Windows Vista, a connected USB storage device does not appear

If you connect a USB storage device, such as a flash drive, the device may not appear in the Safely Remove Hardware window when you click the Safely Remove Hardware icon in the notification area.

The USB device may not appear if it was stopped previously and not unplugged from the USB port. Unplug the device, wait about 20 seconds, and then plug the device back in. The device should re-appear in the list. If not, restart the computer and try again.

If the device is a memory card in a USB card reader, restarting the computer should correct the problem. To prevent the problem from occurring in the future, do not use the safely remove hardware icon to remove a memory card. Instead, use Windows to eject the card. The following steps explain how to properly eject memory cards from a card reader:

1. Insert a memory card when the light on the reader is not flashing . You can have four memory cards inserted, one in each slot, at the same time.

An autoplay window appears. If not, access the card through Windows Explorer.

2. The memory card has a drive letter associated with it, just like a floppy, CD-ROM drive, or hard drive. Use the memory card as you would use any other drive on the computer. For example, double-click the memory card icon to open a new window showing the files on the CompactFlash card.

3. When you have finished working with the files on a memory card, right-click the memory card icon and select Eject . The light on the memory card reader should not be ON or flashing when the card is removed from its slot.

HOW TO CREATE PST IN OUTLOOK (Exporting Emails)

2) Click on Export to a file and then click on Next

3) Click on Personal Folder File (.pst) and then click on next

4) Click on Personal Folder and then put a check mark next to Include Subfolders and then click on next

5) It Will show you the default location were the PST will be saved (C:\Users\TransAirComs\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Outlook)

6) If you want to make a PST in a different location you can change it by clicking on browse and then name the PST (E.g. TransAirComs PST) and click on OK

How To Configure Gmail POP3 With Outlook

The very First Thing before you start configuring MS Outlook with Gmail (or any Service provider) make sure you configure your web mail. So let's get started with configuring MS Outlook 2007 with Gmail Setting

1) Login to you Gmail account (Web Mail)

3) Click on Forwarding and POP/IMAP (you can select POP3 or IMAP) Click on Enable POP for all Mail

4) Click on the Outlook now you need to create a profile for yourself

5) Type Your Name, Email Address and Password

6) Click on "Manually Configure server settings or additional server types

7) Click on Internet E-mail (POP3 / IMAP) to setup the email

8) Under "User Information" Type your Name (Eg.TransAirComs) For "E-mail Address" Type your full Email Address (eg. info.transaircoms@gmail.com)Under "Server Information" Account Type select POP3 for Incoming mail server type pop.gmail.com and Outgoing mail server(SMTP) type smtp.gmail.com Under Logon Information type your user name that would be your full email address(Eg. info.transaircoms@gmail.com) and then type your email password (Please type the same password that you you use for web login)

9) Click on "More Setting" Under " Internet E-mail Settings" Change the Incoming Server (POP3) to 995 and Outgoing Server to 587 for "Use the following type of encrypted connection select "TLS" Under "Delivery" Put and Check mark next to "Leave a Copy of Messages on the server (Just in case your system crashed you don't end up losing all your email) make sure that "Remove from server after 10 Days and Remove from the server when deleted from 'Deleted Items' is unchecked

10) Click on the Outgoing Server Tab and put a check mark next to My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication and check next to Use Same settings as my incoming mail server and then click on OK

11) Now you are good to Go Click Next and click Finish

How to Install and Setup Windows XP Mode in Windows 7

Information

Windows XP Mode is 32-bit XP Pro SP3 virtual machine.

Windows XP Mode for Windows 7 makes it easy to install and run your applications for 32-bit Windows XP directly from your Windows 7 32-bit or 64-bit based PC. It utilizes virtualization technology such as Windows Virtual PC to provide a Virtual Windows XP environment for Windows 7. Windows XP Mode provides only Windows 7 Professional, Ultimate, or Enterprise users the flexibility to run many older productivity applications in a virtual Windows XP environment on a Windows 7-based PC.

Windows Virtual PC: Requirements

Ø 1 GHz 32-bit / 64-bit processor required.

Ø Memory (RAM)

· 1.25 GB required, 2 GB memory recommended

Ø Recommended 15 GB hard disk space per virtual Windows environment

Ø Supported host (your computer) operating system:

· NOTE:Windows XP Mode can only be installed on Windows 7 Enterprise, Windows 7 Professional, and Windows 7 Ultimate.

· Windows 7 Home Premium (32-bit or 64-bit)

· Windows 7 Professional (32-bit and 64-bit)

Here's How:

4.Download and Install Windows XP Mode

A) Click on Save, then save the WindowsXPMode_en-us.exe file to your desktop. (see screenshot below)

D) Click on the Next button. (see screenshot below)

E) If prompted by UAC, click on Yes.

F) When Windows XP Mode is finished installing, click on the Finish button. (See screenshot below)

5. Download and Install Windows Virtual PC

A) At the Windows Virtual PC website, click on the Windows Virtual PC download button in step 3 at that site. (see screenshot below)

C) Double click on the downloaded Windows6.1-KB958559-x86-RefreshPkg.msu or Windows6.1-KB958559-x64-RefreshPkg.msu file to start installing it.

D) If prompted by UAC, click on Yes.

E) Click on Yes. (see screenshot below)

F) Click on the I Accept button. (see screenshot below)

G) When it is finished, click on the Restart Now button. (see screenshot below)

6. Download and Install Windows XP Mode Update

A) At the Windows Virtual PC website, click on the Windows XP Mode Update download button in step 3 at that site. (see screenshot below)

B) Click on Save, then save the Windows6.1-KB8977206-x86.msu or Windows6.1-KB8977206-x64.msu file to your desktop. (see screenshot below)

C) Double click on the downloaded Windows6.1-KB8977206-x86.msu or Windows6.1-KB8977206-x64.msu file to start installing it.

D) If prompted by UAC, click on Yes.

E) Click on Yes. (see screenshot below)

F) When it is finished, click on the Restart Now button. (see screenshot below)

G) When the computer is finished restarting, continue on to step 7 below.

7. To Open and Run Windows XP Mode

A) Open the Start Menu, then click on All Programs, expand the Windows Virtual PC folder, and double click on the Windows XP Mode shortcut. (see screenshot below)

8. Check the I accept box, then click on the Next button. (see screenshot below)

9. Type in a password and type it in again to confirm it, then click on the Next button. (see screenshot below)

10. Select (dot) the Help protect my computer by turning on Automatic Updates now box, then click on the Next button. (see screenshot below)

11. Click on the Start Setup button. (see screenshot below)

12. You will now see this for a few moments while Windows XP Mode is being setup. (see screeshot below)

13. When setup is finished and you did not check the Remember credentials box in step 9 above, then you will need to enter your password entered and click on OK. If you did, then skip this and continue on to step 14. (see screenshot below)

14. The Windows XP Mode - Windows Virtual PC window will now open. You are now in Windows XP Mode. (see screenshot below)

15. Next, be sure to install Integration Components and enable Integration Features.

16. Set Windows XP Mode Settings

A) In the Windows XP Mode window, click on Tools (menu bar) and Settings.

B) In the left pane, select Close/Shut Down.

C) In the right pane, select (dot) Automatically close with the following action, then select Shut Down and click on OK.

17. To Close Windows XP Mode

A) Click on the X in the upper right corner of the Windows XP Mode window like you would any other window in Windows 7. (see screenshot below step 19)

B) In the Windows XP Mode window, click on Action (menu bar) and Close. (see screenshot below step 19)

19. Installing a Program in Windows XP Mode
NOTE: You would install a program in Virtual Windows XP just like you would in Windows 7 with the same access to everything in Windows 7. For example, hard drives, DVD drives, USB drives, Windows 7 folders and files, etc.....

A) After you have installed any program (ex: CCleaner) in Windows XP Mode, you will notice that there will now also be a shortcut to it in the Windows 7 Start Menu in the Windows XP Mode Applications folder under Windows Virtual PC and Windows XP Mode. (see screenshot below)
NOTE: Double clicking on the program's shortcut (ex: CCleaner) in the Windows 7 Start Menu when Windows XP Mode is closed will open and run the program in Windows 7 but as if it you were running it in Windows XP Mode. You could also move or copy this Windows XP Mode Applications shortcut where you like in Windows 7 for easy use.

How to Reset Windows Password through WinRE (Windows Vista and Win 7 32 and 64bit)

I am sure atleast once in our life we may have faced this issue forgetting our windows login password and it's a pain if you have to actually go ahead with doing a complete format installation were you end losing all the data and s/w OR you do a parallel installation to try and save the data but you end up losing all the s/w which we can put it as NO PROFIT / NO LOSS situation. But I am sure you would like to know how to be in a WIN / WIN situation where you won't lose any S/W and Data The below mentioned steps works for both windows vista and windows 7 (Please note that I would be putting Win7 Screen shot which is same as windows vista) Alright let's get started

1) Turn on your computer Press F12 (1 time boot menu) as soon as the computer starts once you are on this screen Insert Window 7 DVD in the DVD Drive and select CD/DVD/CD-RW Drive and press ENTER

NOTE:- The Above shown screen shot is for 1 Time boot menu this screen have differ from manufacture to manufacture. If you have a different screen you may have to refer to you manufactures web site for the same.

2) If prompted, press any key to boot from the Windows 7 installation DVD. (See screenshot below)
NOTE: You will only have about 8 seconds to press this key.

3. Select your language preferences and click on Next. (See screeshot below)

4. Click on Repair your computer. (See screenshot below)

5. Select which operating system you want to restore and the click on Next. (See screenshot below)
NOTE: If Windows 7 is not listed here, or it is blank, then it is ok. Click on Next anyway.

6. Select the system recovery option you want to do. As we would be trying to activate the Administrative Account we need to click on Command Prompt.

7. In the command prompt, type regedit and press Enter. Registry Editor screen will pop-up

8. Click on HKEY_LOCALE_MACHINE (or HKEY_USERS - your choose. In this example I've chosen HKEY_LOCALE_MACHINE) .

9. Go to File menu and choose load hive option

it will open new window and in that navigate to drive where your OS is installed and go to <boot partition>\Windows\System32\config

in this example it is C:\Windows\System32\config

10. Choose SAM file and click Open

11.Next appear Key Name box,type the name whatever you want i.e REM_SAM

12. Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\REM_SAM\SAM\Domains\Accounts\Users\000001F4 key and double click on string F,

it will open table with hexadecimal numbers

13. In this table find 11 number (8th line,first column in table -images),click to the right of it, press backspace and the 11 disappear and insert the 10 in this place

14. Close box,the whole regedit and restart computer.

In the Windows Taskbar, click Microsoft Office Starter To-Go Device Manager. Remove the device and plug it back in to refresh information in the device manager.

Click Install.
Leave your device connected to your computer while the device manager copies the necessary files to it.

When you're ready to use your new device on another computer, do the following:

Plug the Office Starter To-Go device into any computer where you have administrator rights.
On the Windows Start menu, click Computer, and then click the device.
Click Office.exe, and then click the program you want to run: Word Starter or Excel Starter.

WARNING Do not remove the device while Office Starter is running. If the Office Starter To-Go device is removed while Office Starter is running, Office Starter programs will shut down, and any unsaved data will be lost.

As you use your device to store files on it, be sure to leave at least five megabytes (5 MB) of free space for your Office Starter settings to be saved. Settings include personal preferences, such as your custom dictionary and color scheme. Also, leave as much free space as possible to receive background updates for Office Starter To-Go, which are downloaded from the Internet.
When you are finished using Office Starter, close the programs, and close Microsoft Office Starter To-Go.

Office Starter To-Go remains available in the Windows Taskbar.

Note You can re-open Office Starter while the device is plugged in by right-clicking Office Starter To-Go in the Taskbar, and then clicking Open.

Right-click Office Starter To-Go in the Taskbar, click Close, and then clickSafely Remove Hardware in the Taskbar, and click the device.

Windows tells you whether it is safe to remove the device. You may need to close other applications—for example, if the device is displayed in Windows Explorer, close Windows Explorer, and then try the Safe to Remove Hardware program again.

Remove the device when it is safe to do so.

When you remove the device, you take Office Starter with you. Office Starter is not installed on the computer.

System Sleep States: S0, S1, S2, S3, S4 & S5

The overall power consumption of the system is referred to as System Power States. There are a total of six different power states ranging from S0 (the system is completely powered ON and fully operational) to S5 (the system is completely powered OFF) and the States (S1, S2, S3 and S4) are referred to as sleeping states, in which the system appears OFF because of low power consumption and retains enough of the hardware context to return to the working state without a system reboot.

Ø System Power State S0 the ON state: The system is completely operation, fully powered and completely retains the context.

Ø System Power State S1 the Sleep state: The system consumes less power than S0 state. All Hardware & Processor context is maintained.

Ø System Power State S2 the Sleep state: The system consumes less power than S1 state. Processor loses power and processor context and contents of the cache are lost.

Ø System Power State S3 the Sleep state: The system consumes less power than S2 state. Processor & Hardware context, cache contents, and chipset context are lost. The system memory is retained.

Ø System Power State S4 the Hibernate state: The system consumes the least power compared to all other sleep states. The system is almost at an OFF state, expect for a trickle power. The context data is written to hard drive (disk)and there is no context retained.

Ø System Power State S5 the OFF state:The system is in a shutdown state and the system retains no context. Note that in power state S4 the system can restart from the context data stored on the disk, but in S5 the system requires a reboot.

File and Printer Sharing in Windows Vista

The differences in file and printer sharing in Windows Vista are the following:

The default workgroup name in Windows Vista has been changed to WORKGROUP. In Windows® XP Home Edition, the default workgroup name is MSHOME. If you upgrade a computer running Windows XP Home Edition to Windows Vista, it will keep its existing workgroup name. However, new computers with Windows Vista can have a different workgroup name than the other computers on your network. With different workgroups, it takes more time and effort to view all of the computers on the network.

Windows Vista uses the Public folder, rather than the Shared Documents folder in Windows XP, to simplify file sharing. With Public folder sharing enabled, the public folders and all of the folders within the Public folder are automatically shared with the name Public. You do not have to configure file sharing on separate folders. You only have to either move or copy the file or folder you want to share on the network to the Public folder.

Windows Vista by default does not allow simple file sharing. Access to shared folders, including the public folder (if shared), requires a user name and password. Simple file sharing is enabled by default in Windows XP Home Edition.

Configuring file and printer sharing behavior in Windows Vista consists of the following:

Setting the workgroup name to be the same as the other computers

Setting the network location type

Enabling file and printer sharing options

Setting the Workgroup Name

For easier and faster discovery of computers on your home network, it is highly recommended that all computers on a home network be configured for the same workgroup name. If computers are in multiple workgroups, it can take additional time and effort to discover all of the computers on the network.

To find out the existing workgroup name for a computer running Windows XP, do the following:

1. Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.

2. In the System Properties dialog box, click the Computer Name tab and note the name of the workgroup.

Figure 1 shows an example.

To find out the existing workgroup name for a computer running Windows Vista, click Start, right-click Computer, and then click Properties.

In the System window, the workgroup name is listed in the Computer name, domain, and workgroup settings section. Figure 2 shows an example of the System window with the workgroup name highlighted.

To configure the workgroup name for a computer running Windows Vista:

1. In the Computer name, domain, and workgroup settings section of the System window, click Change settings.

2. On the Computer Name tab of the System Properties dialog box, click Change.

3. In the Computer Name/Domain Changes dialog box, type the name of the workgroup being used by the other computers on your network in Workgroup, and then click OK. Figure 3 shows an example.

4. When you are prompted with a welcome message box, click OK. When prompted with a message box to restart your computer, clickOK.

5. Click Close. When prompted to restart the computer, click Restart Now.

Setting the Network Location Type

The network location type in Windows Vista is a setting that allows Windows Vista to automatically configure security and other settings based on the type of network to which the computer is connected. The Windows Vista network location types are the following:

Domain The computer is connected to a network that contains an Active Directory domain controller for the domain to which the computer is joined. An example a domain network type is an organization intranet.

Public The computer is connected to a network that has a direct connection to the Internet. Examples of public network types are public Internet access networks such as those found in airports, libraries, and coffee shops.

Private The computer is connected to a network that has some level of protection from the Internet and contains known or trusted computers. Examples of private network types are home networks or small office networks that are located behind an Internet gateway device that provides firewalling against incoming traffic from the Internet.

For small office or home office networks, you want to make sure that the network location type is set to private.

To view the current network location type, do the following, click Start, right-click Network, and then click Properties.

The Network and Sharing Center window displays the network location type in parentheses after the network name. Figure 4 shows an example of the Network and Sharing Center window with the network location type highlighted.

If your network type is Public, do the following:

1. To the right of the network name and location type, click Customize.

2. In the Set Network Location dialog box, click Private, and then click Next.

3. In the Successfully set network settings dialog box, click Close.

Enabling File and Printer Sharing Options

By changing your network location type to private, network discovery is automatically enabled in the Sharing and Discovery section of the Network and Sharing Center window. The following additional file and printer sharing options must be manually enabled:

File sharing

Public folder sharing

Printer sharing

Password protected sharing

When all of these sharing and discovery options are enabled, your computer can:

Locate other computers and devices on your home network and have other computers locate your computer

Share its folders

Share its Public folder

Share its printers

Require user names and passwords for other computers that connect to the shared folders and printers of this computer

To enable file sharing, do the following:

1. In the Sharing and Discovery section of the Network and Sharing Center window, click the down arrow next to File sharing.

2. Within the File sharing settings, click Turn on file sharing, and then click Apply.

To enable public folder sharing, do the following:

1. In the Sharing and Discovery section of the Network and Sharing Center window, click the down arrow next to Public folder sharing.

2. Within the Public folder sharing settings, click one of the following:

· If you want to share the public folder so that other computers on the network can access the Public share to open files, but not create or change files, click Turn on sharing so anyone with network access can open files. This is the default setting.

· If you want to share the public folder so that other computers on the network can access the Public share to open files and also create or change files, click Turn on sharing so anyone with network access can open, change, and create files.

3. Click Apply.

To enable printer sharing and share all of your connected printers, do the following:

1. In the Sharing and Discovery section of the Network and Sharing Center window, click the down arrow next to Printer sharing.

2. Within the Printer sharing settings, click Turn on printer sharing, and then click Apply.

To enable password protected sharing, do the following:

1. In the Sharing and Discovery section of the Network and Sharing Center window, click the down arrow next to Password protected sharing.

2. Within the Password protected sharing settings, click Turn on password protected sharing, and then click Apply.

Password Protected Sharing

With password protected sharing enabled, other computers on your network will not be able to access your shared folders, including the Public folder, without a user name or password that corresponds to a user account on the computer with the shared folder. When a user on another computer tries to connect to the shared folder, they will send the user name and password of the account that they used to log on to their own computer. For example, if they logged on to their computer with the "Bob" account and a password, then the "Bob" name with its password is sent when connecting to a shared folder on another computer.

If there is a "Bob" account with its password on the computer that is sharing the folder, the shared folder connection will be successful (provided the "Bob" account is specified as one of the accounts that can access the share). However, if there is no "Bob" account on the computer that is sharing the folder, the shared folder connection will fail and the user on the other computer will be prompted with a dialog box to type in a user name and password. At this point, the user on the computer attempting to connect can type the name and password of an account on the computer sharing the folder that is specified as one of the accounts that can access the share.

To prevent shared folder connection failures, you can do one of the following:

Add the same accounts and passwords to all of the computers on your network

For example, if you have three computers in your home and four family members that use them, add all four accounts with their passwords corresponding to your family members to all three computers. When this is done, each family member can access the shared folders of the other computers, regardless of which computer they are using. This is the recommended method, which provides protection of shared folders and prevents shared folder connection failures.

Disable password protected sharing

When you disable password protected sharing, the computer sharing the folder does not require a user account or password. Anyone on your network can access the shared folders of the computer (provided the folder was shared for the Guest or Everyone account). This behavior is equivalent to simple file sharing in Windows XP.

To disable password protected sharing, do the following:

1. In the Sharing and Discovery section of the Network and Sharing Center window, click the down arrow next to Password protected sharing.

2. Within the Password protected sharing settings, click Turn off password protected sharing, and then click Apply.

Sharing a Folder or Printer in Windows Vista

To share a folder in Windows Vista, do the following:

1. Ensure that file sharing is enabled as described in the "Enabling File and Printer Sharing Options" section of this article.

2. Click Start, and then click Computer.

3. In the Computer window, navigate to the folder containing the folder that you want to share.

4. Right-click the folder that you want to share, and then click Share. The File Sharing window is displayed.

5. If you have password protected sharing enabled, use the File Sharing window to select which users can access the shared folder and their permission level. To allow all users, select Everyone in the list of users. By default, the permission level for a selected user is Reader. Users cannot change files or create new files in the share. To allow a user to change files or folders or create new files or folders, select Co-owner as the permission level. Figure 5 shows an example of configuring users and permission levels in the File Sharing window.

If you have password protected sharing disabled, use the File Sharing window to select the Guest or Everyone account. This is equivalent to simple file sharing in Windows XP.

6. When complete, click Share, and then click Done.

You can also share a folder from the folder's properties by doing the following:

1. In the Computer window, navigate to the folder containing the folder that you want to share.

2. Right-click the folder that you want to share, and then click Properties. Windows Vista displays the folder properties window.

3. Click the Sharing tab. Figure 6 shows an example. Click Share for the File Sharing dialog box previously described. To configure advanced sharing options, click Advanced Sharing.

When you click Advanced Sharing, Windows Vista displays the Advanced Sharing dialog box. Figure 7 shows an example.

From this dialog box, you can do the following:

Create more than one share for the same folder with different share names.

Click Add to specify the new share name, a description for the share, the number of users allowed to connect, and share permissions (by default, the Everyone group has Read permissions).

Specify the maximum number of users that can be connected to the shared folder.

In Limit the number of simultaneous users to, specify 1 to 10.

Add a comment to the shared folder that appears to users when they are browsing for shared folders.

Type a description for the share in Comments.

Specify folder share permissions.

Click Permissions to specify individual user or group names and their permissions to access the files in the shared folder. Figure 8 shows an example.

Specify whether the contents of the folders of the share can be made available offline.

Click Caching and specify offline settings.

To verify that the folder is shared, do the following:

1. Click Start, right-click Network, and then click Properties.

2. Under the Sharing and Discovery section of the Network and Sharing Center window, click Show me all the shared network folders on this computer.

A window displays the shared folders and printers. Verify that the window contains the folder that you just shared. Figure 9 shows an example.

If you share any folder within your user folder (click Start, and then click your user name), such Documents or Pictures, then other computers will see a folder named Users in the list of shared folders on this computer. For example, if the user Bob shares his Desktop folder on his computer named BobPC, it means that Bob has shared his c:\users\bob folder, which includes the Desktop folder. Bob's Desktop folder is now available at \\bobpc\users\bob\desktop.

Sharing Your Printers

To share your printers in Windows Vista, ensure that printer sharing is enabled as described in the "Enabling File and Printer Sharing Options" section of this article.

To verify that your printers are shared, do the following:

1. Click Start, right-click Network, and then click Properties.

2. Under the Sharing and Discovery section of the Network and Sharing Center window, click Show me all the shared network folders on this computer.

3. In the list of shared resources, verify that your printers are listed.

Accessing a Shared Folder or Printer with Windows Vista

To access a shared folder from a computer running Windows Vista, do the following:

1. Click Start, and then click Network. The Network window displays a list of computers in the workgroup of the computer. Figure 10 shows an example.

2. Double-click the name of the computer containing the shared folder that you want to access.

3. Double-click the shared folder that you want to access.

If the shared folder is on a computer running Windows Vista that has network discovery enabled, it should appear in the Network window quickly. If the computer containing the shared folder is on a computer running Windows XP, it might take up to 15 minutes for the computer to appear in the Network window.

If the computer that you are trying to access has password protected sharing enabled, the possibilities are the following:

If you are logged in using a user account that has been added to the computer sharing the folder and that name has been added to the list of users who have access to the folder, the shared folder connection will be successful.

If you are logged in using a user account that has not been added to the computer sharing the folder, you will be prompted to provide a user name and password of an account on the computer sharing the folder that has been added to the list of users who have access to the folder.

If you are logged in using a user account that has been added to the computer sharing the folder but has not been added to the list of users who can access the share, the shared folder connection will be denied.

If the computer that you are trying to access has password protected sharing disabled, the possibilities are the following:

In most cases, the access to the shared folder will be successful without prompting for a user name and password.

In some cases, you will be prompted to provide a user name and password. You should type the name guest with no password to access the shared folder.

If the shared folder does not have the Guest or Everyone account in its list of allowed users, shared folder access can fail even after prompting you for the name of the Guest account. To correct this, add the Guest or Everyone account to the list of allowed users on the share.

Accessing a Shared Printer

To access a shared printer from a computer running Windows Vista, do the following:

1. Click Start, and then click Network. The Network window displays a list of computers in the workgroup of the computer.

2. Double-click the name of the computer containing the shared printer that you want to access.

3. Right-click the shared printer that you want to access, and then click Connect. Alternately, you can double-click on Printers to see just the list of shared printers, and then right-click the shared printer that you want to access, and then click Connect.

After you have connected to the shared printer, you will be able to print to this shared printer as long as the printer and the computer sharing the printer are turned on.

Common Questions with Windows Vista File and Printer Sharing

The following sections describe common questions about file and printer sharing in Windows Vista.

Using a Third-Party Firewall

Windows Vista includes a built-in host-based firewall known as Windows Firewall. When network discovery or file and printer sharing are enabled, Windows Firewall automatically allows the corresponding incoming traffic. However, many users use a different firewall product such as Windows Live OneCare or PC-cillin. These firewalls by default might block incoming network discovery and file and printer sharing traffic. If a firewall product other than Windows Firewall is being used, Windows Vista displays an information message above the Sharing and Discovery section of the Network and Sharing Center window. Figure 11 shows an example.

If you are using a firewall other than Windows Firewall, you must configure the firewall to allow incoming network discovery and file and printer sharing traffic.

For network discovery of other computers running Windows Vista, you must allow the following incoming Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) and User Datagram Protocol (UDP) traffic:

UDP 3702

TCP 5357

TCP 5358

For network discovery of computers running Windows XP and for file and printer sharing for both Windows Vista and Windows XP, you must allow the following incoming traffic:

UDP 137

UDP 138

TCP 139

TCP 445

For network discovery of network devices, you must allow the following incoming traffic:

Cannot Authenticate to a Shared Folder from a Windows Vista-based Computer

If you cannot authenticate when accessing a shared folder from a Windows Vista-based computer on a computer running a version of Windows prior to Windows XP (such as Windows 98 or Windows 95), a computer running an operating system other than Microsoft Windows, or to a network device, the cause might be a mismatch in the configured support for NTLM 2, an authentication protocol that is used for file and printer sharing connections. By default, Windows Vista is configured to use NTLM 2.

To resolve this issue, you can do one of the following:

Enable NTLM 2 support on the computer or device to which the Windows Vista-based computer is attempting to connect. For computers running versions of Windows prior to Windows XP, see How to enable NTLM 2 authentication. For computers running operating systems other than Windows, see the operating system's product documentation for information about how to enable NTLM 2 support. For network devices, see the device's product documentation or Web site for information about how to enable NTLM 2 support or download a firmware update that supports NTLM 2. This is the preferred solution.

If you cannot update the computers running operating systems other than Windows or your network devices to support NTLM 2, change the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Lsa\LMCompatibilityLevel registry value on the computer running Windows Vista to 1. This solution is not recommended.

Folder Security and Share Permissions

Folder security defines what users can do within folders. To configure folder security, right-click a folder in the Computer window, and then click the Security tab. Share permissions must match the folder security for access to a share to be successful. For example, if the share permissions allow access to both Bob and Sally, but the folder security only allows Bob, then Sally will not be able to access the share. You must add the Sally account to the folder security settings.

For another example, when a user disables password protected sharing, the default share permissions for new shares include the Everyone group. If the folder security specifies access for the Users group, another computer that is not using an account on the sharing computer will not be able to access the share. Another computer that is not using an account on the sharing computer will be using the Guest account, which is not a member of the Users group. To allow this other computer to access the share, you must add the Guest account to the folder security settings.

Administrative Shares and Sharing the Root of a Drive

Windows XP by default created administrative shares for the root folders of the fixed drives of the computer. For example, for the root of the C: drive on the computer named BobPC, Windows XP automatically shared \\bobpc\c$. The "$" at the end of the share name means that the share name will not appear in the list of shares. For computers running Windows Vista that are members of a workgroup, these administrative shares exist but are blocked for network access for security reasons. You can create your own shares to share your drives from the root of the drive, but Microsoft highly recommends that you share only the folders that you need to, rather than the entire drive.

To share the root of a drive, do the following:

1. Right-click the drive in the Computer window, and then click Share. Windows Vista displays the properties for the drive with theSharing tab selected.

The Share button and the File Sharing dialog box are not available.

2. Click Advanced Sharing.

3. In the Advanced Sharing dialog box, click Share this folder and specify the share name, permissions, and other settings as needed.

4. Click OK, and then click Close.

Because the "driveletter$" shares already exist, you cannot share the root of a drive with the name "driveletter$". However, you can share it with another name, such as "driveletter". For example, you cannot share the root of your C: drive as "C$", but you can share it as "C".

Viewing Shares Without the Network Window

If the computer that you are trying to access for a shared folder or printer does not appear in the Network window, you can try to view the shares of the computer by clicking Start, typing \\ ComputerName , and then pressing Enter.

For example, to view the shares of the computer named BobPC, click Start, type \\bobpc, and then press Enter.

File and Printer Sharing in Windows XP

Windows XP supports three different ways of sharing files:

· The Shared Documents folder

· Simple file sharing

· Advanced file sharing

These three different types are described in the following sections.

Shared Documents Folder

Windows XP Home Edition file sharing is simplified by using a special folder named the Shared Documents folder. This folder is available in My Computer and Windows Explorer. Any file or folder within the Shared Documents folder is automatically shared on the network. You do not have to configure file sharing on separate folders. You only have to either move or copy the file or folder you want to share on the network to the Shared Documents folder.

Simple File Sharing

Windows XP Home Edition supports a file sharing mode known as simple file sharing for folders other than the Shared Documents folder. A computer running Windows XP Professional when it is a member of a workgroup also supports simple file sharing. With simple file sharing, the act of enabling file sharing on a folder and specifying the type of access is simplified to the following choices:

· Whether to enable sharing for the folder

· The name of the share

· Whether to allow network users to change files in the folder

The Sharing tab for simple file sharing is shown in the following figure.

Advanced File Sharing

For a computer running Windows XP Professional (when it is a member of a workgroup), you can optionally disable simple file sharing and enable advanced file sharing, also known as classic file sharing. Advanced file sharing is the file sharing mode used by Windows 2000 and Windows NT 4.0. With advanced file sharing you can specify:

· Whether to enable sharing for the folder

· The share name

· A comment or description for the share

· The maximum number of computers that can connect to the share

· Permissions on the share, which include the list of user or group accounts and their level of access

· Offline folder settings

· If modifying the settings of an existing shared folder, whether to create a new share

The Sharing tab for advanced file sharing is shown in the following figure.

When you click Permissions, the Permissions dialog box is displayed, showing you the current set of permissions for connecting to the shared folder. The types of access are Full Control, Read, and Change, each of which can be allowed or denied. The default shared folder permissions for a computer that is a member of a workgroup are shown in the following figure.

When you click Add, the Select Users or Groups window is displayed, from which you can type or locate the user or group account names to add. If the computer is a member of a workgroup, then only the accounts on the local computer are available. If the computer is a member of a domain, then you can select domain accounts, accounts from domains that are trusted by the domain of the computer, and local computer accounts.

An example of a computer running Windows XP Professional that is a member of a workgroup is shown in the following figure.

For a computer running Windows XP Professional that is a member of a domain, the domain name is listed by default in From this location.

To enable advanced file sharing on a computer running Windows XP Professional (when it is a member of a workgroup), do the following:

Click Start, and then click My Computer.

In My Computer, click Tools, and then click Folder Options.

In Folder Options, click the View tab.

In the Advanced settings, clear the Use simple file sharing (Recommended) check box. An example is shown in the following figure.

Click OK.

For a computer running Windows XP Professional that is a member of a domain, advanced file sharing is the only mode of file sharing.

The following table summarizes the different types of file sharing supported in Windows XP.

Connecting to a Windows XP Shared Folder

The behavior of connecting to a folder or printer that is shared from a computer running Windows XP depends on whether simple or advanced file sharing is being used.

Connecting When Simple File Sharing is Being Used

For simple file sharing, which includes access to the Shared Documents folder, the set of credentials sent by the connecting client are essentially ignored. All access is based on the status of the Guest account on the computer running Windows XP. The Guest account is enabled by default; however, you cannot use it to logon to the computer. As long as the Guest account is enabled as an account, client computers can access shared folders using simple file sharing.

Connecting When Advanced File Sharing is Being Used

In order to connect to a Windows XP Professional shared folder when advanced file sharing is being used, you must be:

· Using a set of credentials that Windows XP can validate (it is either a local computer account or a domain account) and has been granted the Read, Change, or Full Control access type either explicitly (the account name) or though group membership, as specified in the permissions of the shared folder.

· Using a set of credentials that Windows XP cannot validate, and either the domain Guest account or the local Guest account has been enabled and has been granted the Read, Change, or Full Control access type either explicitly (the Guest account name) or though group membership, as specified in the permissions of the shared folder.

You can be denied access to a Windows XP shared folder through the following:

· The account name in the credentials sent by the connecting client is a valid user name, but the password is incorrect.

· The account name in the credentials sent by the connecting client is a user name that cannot be validated by Windows XP and the domain Guest and the local computer Guest accounts are either disabled or are not specified via the permissions of the shared folder. The domain Guest is disabled by default and the local computer Guest account is enabled by default for computers that are members of a workgroup and disabled by default for computers that are members of a domain.

· The account name and password in the credentials sent by the connecting client can be validated by Windows XP, but either access has not been granted or all types of access are set to Deny either explicitly (the account name) or though group membership.

Enabling File and Printer Sharing

For computers that are running Windows XP Home Edition and Windows XP Professional that are members of a workgroup, file and printer sharing is disabled by default. If you attempt to share a folder, the Sharing tab contains two links with which you can enable sharing in Network sharing and security. An example is shown in the following figure.

Similarly, if you attempt to share a printer before enabling file sharing, the Sharing tab contains two links with which you can enable sharing. An example is shown in the following figure.

To enable file and printer sharing, you can either click the link to run the Network Setup Wizard or click the link to enable file and printer sharing without running the Network Setup Wizard. When you click the link to run the Home Network Setup Wizard, the Home Network Setup Wizard is run, which asks you a set of questions to automatically configure network settings. The Home Network Setup Wizard automatically enables file and printer sharing.

When you click the link to enable file sharing without running the Network Setup Wizard, you are prompted with an Enable File Sharing dialog box, as shown in the following figure.

Click Just enable file sharing, and then click OK.

When you enable file and printer sharing, you are enabling file and printer sharing using simple file sharing. To enable advanced file sharing on a computer running Windows XP Professional, see the procedure in the "Advanced File Sharing" section of this article.

Sharing a Folder

For a computer running Windows XP Home Edition, you can share a folder or an individual file by copying or moving it to the Shared Documents folder. If you want to create a separate share for a folder, rather than using the Shared Documents folder, right-click the folder in My Computer, and then click Sharing and Security. Alternately, you can click the folder in My Computer, and then click Share this folder in the list of File and Folder Tasks.

From the Sharing tab for the folder's properties, do the following:

· For simple file sharing, click Share this folder on the network and make other changes as needed.

· For advanced file sharing, click Share this folder and make other changes as needed.

To share a folder from Windows Explorer, right-click the folder name in the tree pane, and then click Sharing and Security.

Mapping a Network Drive

It is also possible to create a network drive that appears in My Computer as a drive but is actually mapped to a shared folder. To create a network drive, do the following:

1. Click Start, and then click My Network Places.

2. In My Network Places, click Tools, and then click Map Network Drive.

3. In Map Network Drive, you can specify the following:

· The network drive letter. By default, Windows XP uses the last available drive letter.

· The folder name, which is the combination of computer and share name using \\ComputerName\ShareName. If you do not remember the computer or share name, click Browse and use the Browse window to locate the desired shared folder,

· Whether to automatically reconnect the network drive when you log on to the computer.

· Whether you want to use a different name and password to connect to the shared folder.

An example is shown in the following figure.

4. Click Finish to map the network drive.

5. A window appears displaying the contents of the newly mapped network drive. An example is shown in the following figure.

The mapped network drive also appears in My Computer. An example is shown in the following figure.

Sharing a Printer

Once file sharing has been enabled, you can share a printer from the Printers and Faxes folder by doing the following:

Click Start, and then click Printers and Faxes.

From Printers and Faxes, right-click the printer and click Sharing. Alternately, you can click the printer and then click Share this printer in the Printer Tasks list.

From the Sharing tab, click Share this printer.

If you are sharing the printer with users on computers running versions of Windows other than Windows 2000 and Windows XP and you want the printer drivers for those versions of Windows to be installed automatically, click Additional Drivers. In Additional Drivers, select the versions of Windows being used on the other computers on your network and then click OK.

If the printer drivers for the other versions of Windows are not already installed, you are prompted to insert a floppy disk or CD-ROM containing the printer drivers. Insert the appropriate disk and click OK. The drivers are installed on the Windows XP computer that is sharing the printer.

Click OK.

Connecting to a Shared Printer

There are several ways to connect to a shared printer, including the following:

· From the Add Printer Wizard

· Using Start-Run to open a window containing the shared printer

· Using My Network Places to open a window containing the shared printer

From the Add Printer Wizard

To connect to a shared printer from the Add Printer Wizard, do the following:

Click Start, and then click Printers and Faxes.

From Printers and Faxes, click Add a printer in the Printer Tasks list.

On the Welcome to the Add Printer Wizard page of the Add Printer Wizard, click Next.

On the Local or Network Printer page, click A network printer, or printer attached to another computer. An example is shown in the following figure.

On the Specify a Printer page, you can do one of the following:

· Click Browse for a printer to use a Browse window to locate a shared printer on your network.

· Click Connect to this printer and type the \\ComputerName\SharedPrinterName (in which ComputerName is the name of the computer sharing the printer and SharedPrinterName is the name of the print share).

· Click Connect to a printer on the Internet or on a home or office network and type the Uniform Resource Locator (URL) address of the shared Internet printer.

An example of using the Connect to this printer option is shown in the following figure.

Click Next.

On the Default Printer page, click Yes if you want to make this network printer the default printer. Otherwise, click No. Click Next.

On the Completing the Add Printer Wizard page, click Finish.

The shared printer should now appear in your Printers and Faxes folder. An example is shown in the following figure.

Managing Shared Folders

In Windows XP, you can manage shared folder using the Shared Folders snap-in. The Shared Folders snap-in is used to view and manage your shares, connected computers, and files that are open on your computer by connected computers. To open the Shared Folders snap-in, do the following:

Click Start, click Control Panel, click Performance and Maintenance, click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Computer Management.

In Computer Management, double-click Shared Folders under System Tools.

An example is shown in the following figure.

Using the Shared Folders snap-in, you can view:

· The set of shared folders shared on the computer (the Shares folder).

1. You can also stop the sharing of a shared folder or create a new shared folder.

· The names of the computers that are currently connected to the computer (the Sessions folder).

2. You can also manually disconnect a computer that is currently connected.

· The files that are open by remote computers (the Open Files folder).

3. You can also manually close a file that is open by a connected computer.

Windows 7 32-bit with full 4 GB or 8 GB RAM support

The kernel of the 32-bit version of Windows 7 has only a lock, which prevents access to more memory. More dramatically is this lock in the 32-bit version of Windows 7 Starter Edition: There the prohibition is much more rigorous and it only allows access to 2 GB of RAM:

In the 32-bit version of Windows 7 from 4 GB usually only 3.25 -3.5 GB of RAM are usable:

In general many people believe this "not usable" RAM
is occupied by the graphic card RAM:

The German computer magazine c't has made a test
with different graphic cards (c't 23/2009, page 165):

These results are completely incomprehensible. Why is with no video card (0 MB, connection via Remote Desktop) 512 MB RAM blocked? Why blocked a graphic card with 128 MB also 512 MB RAM – and not 128 MB? And why blocked a graphic card with 1024 MB "only" 750 MB?
The Russian Programmers Group "staforce" has written a small program witch removes the lock in the kernel of the 32-bit version of Windows 7. The program automatically makes a copy of the kernel file, then removes the lock and integrates the new kernel file as an extra boot menu entry in the Windows 7 boot menu. So then you have the option to start Windows 7 either as usual with the original kernel file or with the modified kernel file.

With such a patched (modified) kernel the 32 bit version of Windows 7
suddenly can use almost the entire 4 GB of RAM:

For these screen shots a 32 MB onboard graphic card is used. So 32 MB is really "hardware reserved". The rest of 2 MB is reserved for I/O ports (USB port, serial-, parallel port, etc.).

And even 8 GB of RAM are now no longer a problem.
The original kernel still reports that 4898 MB are "Hardware Reserved" - what hardware?

The patched kernel then reports correct that only 34 MB is "Hardware Reserved":

The RAM limit of the 32-bit version of Windows 7 is therefore 64 GB - like Microsoft describes for the "Windows Server 2003 Datacenter Edition" (see above). More extensive details - still from Vista-times - see here by Geoff Chappell.

The patch

The program "4GB-7600.RTM.x86.04.08.2009.exe" (2,2 MB) that patches the kernel is not yet translated into English. But the patch-program has only one button which must be pressed:

The program makes automatically a copy of the kernel file, then removes the lock and integrates the new kernel file as an extra boot menu entry in the Windows 7 boot menu. So then you have the option to start Windows 7, either as usual with the original kernel file or with the modified kernel file.
What the patch is doing you can read here in German language or here in machine translation. So you also can do it manually.
The patch has two small but treatable side effects:

Because Windows 7 observed the changes the kernel can not boot normally. For the Microsoft programmers who often times work with patched kernel Microsoft has built in a boot parameter - an additional switch: "testsigning = Yes"). So they can test their patched kernels. With this switch the patched kernel can start easily.
But this switch leads to the fact that on the desktop background, lower right corner (above the clock) a hint ("Watermark") is displayed:

To remove this "watermark" the patch program delivers a separate program
"watermark remover" ("Watermark Remover"):

This currently doesn't work - or only with Russian watermarks. Therefore you can press "Y" for "yes" or "N" for "no". However other "Watermark remover" from the Internet work properly. Afterwards the PC immediately reboots. Upon reboot there are 2 boot options - either the old, unmodified kernel or the new, patched kernel.

In a Command Prompt with admin rights you can see with the command
"bcdedit" the new boot menu entry in detail:

The text that appears in the boot menu can be found under "description".
"testsigning = Yes" allows the patched kernel to start despite modification.
The copied and modified kernel is called "ntkrlStaforce.exe".
With "pae = ForceEnable" the address extension for the RAM is activated.

Components of File and Printer Sharing

To act as a client computer, a computer running Windows XP must have the Client for Microsoft Networks component installed and enabled on a network connection that is attached to the home network. To verify that the Client for Microsoft Networks component is installed and enabled, do the following:

1.Click Start, click Control Panel, click Network and Internet Connections, and then click Network Connections.

2.Click the connection that is connected to your home network, and then, in the Tasks pane, click Change settings of this connection.

3.In the properties of the network connection, under This connection uses the following items, verify that the Client for Microsoft Networks component is installed and enabled (the checkbox is checked). The following figure shows an example.

4.If it is not installed, click Install.

The Client for Microsoft Networks component corresponds to the Workstation service. The File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks component corresponds to the Server service. To use the Services snap-in to check the status of the Workstation and Server services, do the following:

1.Click Start, click Control Panel, click Performance and Maintenance, click Administrative Tools, and then double-click Services.

2.In the details pane of the Services snap-in, double-click the Workstation service.

Startup type should be set to Automatic and the Service status should be Started.

3.Click OK.

4.In the details pane of the Services snap-in, double-click the Server service.

Startup type should be set to Automatic and the Service status should be Started.

5.Click OK.

System Mechanic Pro Not Working ( System Mechanic may display “test2”)

Issue# After activation of System Mechanic (Basic & Professional), the Main Screen of System Mechanic may display “test2”. The remaining days may also not be correct.Uninstalling and Reinstalling System Mechanic does not resolve the issue.

Resolution# This usually happens when the computer has a registry entry within their Internet Security Zones setting area that should not and it is somehow controlling how SM interface displays.

The issue can be resolved by going into the registry, finding the key that should not be there and deleting it manually. Given below is the troubleshooting steps.

Windows XP / Vista / Win7 Instructions:

Ø Click on Start>RUN, type in regedit (XP). Click on Start, type in Regedit in the search box.

Ø Please expand the folders to this location:

Ø HEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Zones\ (expand the Zones folder also).

Ø Within the folder, there should be numbered folders.

Ø Once the Zones folder is expanded you will see either a L or [] folder.

Ø Right click on the L or [] folder and select delete.

Ø You should now only see the 0 through 4 sub folders below within the Zones folder.

Ø Now close the Registry Editor and restart your computer.

Ø Launch System Mechanic and the program will launch properly showing you the whole interface.
