“80 Days” is an adaption of Jules Verne’s classic novel “Around the world in 80 days”, in itself a work which delves deep into the technology and the socio-cultural makeup of its time, giving the world the excentric traveller Phileas Fogg and his manservant Passepartout.

In the game, the player takes control of Passepartout and is charged with organizing the journey around the world, told through a stylishly minimalistic interface and with a strong focus on storytelling. It greatly expands on Verne’s novel, creating a nonlinear experience with many different routes and options.

We talk about the motives and what the novel tells about its time and how the game treats these elements. In passing we are also having a look at two other adaptions of the source material: The film from 1956 and the TV series from 1989, starring Pierce Brosnan.

Erratum: Of course, Philipp got the name of 80 Days’ writer wrong. The writer of the game was Meg Jayanth.

This is opportunity enough for the StoryFusion team to have a look at the game’s unique blend of gameplay, historical lesson and documentary. Created by Ink Studios, under the guidance of Navid Khonsari and a group of Iranian exiles, the game has received a wide range of accolades, even though its production was off to a rocky start.

In the game the player takes the role of a young photo journalist, trying to document the ongoing uprising against the military regime of the Shah. Yet the different political factions of the time force the main character (and thus the player) to make difficult moral choices along the way, while discovering the Iranian capital of Teheran in 1979, its culture, its politics and its people.

We also take a look at its similarities with Marjane Satrapi’s autobiographic graphic novel and movie “Persepolis” and discuss how the team managed to incorporate authentic history documents into the game.

Man darf gespannt sein, wo es Selim und Delilah in ihrem gerade erschienen “Delilah Dirk and the Pillars of Hercules” hintreibt.

This weekend Berlin celebrates the 40th Christopher Street Day, thus the StoryFusion podcast tackles the subject of queer, kinky sex in Christina Love’s video game “Ladykiller in a bind”.

Stemming from the tradition of the visual novel genre, “Ladykiller” is a video game about a young woman who takes the role of her twin brother on a cruise. Beset by love interests, unreliable friends and alleged foes, she has to navigate a perverse game which is set up by an unknown entity and which promises riches to whoever is best at navigating this treacherous journey.

Apart from the sometimes erotic, sometimes pornographic content, the games sets up a very complicated network of characters, each of them more manipulative and deceptive than the other.

We ask about the deeper meaning of the power mechanics on display, their theoretical roots, as well as their political implications and why we took such different paths while playing this game.

Almost 70 years after her death, the interest in the unique Mexican artist’s life and work does not seem to have abated – on the contrary. Following in the wake of an ambitious exhibition in London the world seems to be – once again – enthralled by Kahlo’s images and her image.

We used the opportunity to revisit “Frida”, the 2002 biopic by director Julie Taymor, starring and produced by Salma Hayek. In itself the movie is a testimony of its time which has made an unexpected return to prominence, as – encouraged by the #MeToo movement – Salma Hayek has publically exposed the abuse she has suffered at the hands of Hollywood magnate Harvey Weinstein while producing this particular film.

During our longest podcast yet, we attempt to explore these intersections of art, life and the signs of times, asking questions about the discrepancies between an artist’s life and their belated biographies, about self-expression and image and why we are still fascinated by the life of Frida Kahlo, who may have been way ahead of her time.
