Lorsqu'une société utilise ses droits d'auteur pour obtenir le retrait de vidéos dont elle détient les droits, en ne visant spécifiquement que celles qui portent un discours politique particulier, s'agit-il toujours de droits d'auteur, ou de censure ? Au Canada, où le débat sur le degré de protection du droit d'auteur nécessaire sur Internet est plus fort que jamais, une chaîne de télévision a exigé le retrait sur YouTube de vidéos montrant les lobbys du droit d'auteur en difficulté, sans demander le retrait des autres vidéos dont elle a les droits.

Here’s a pretty cool app for anyone designing pixel art while on the move.

The title gives a clue: this is a 32×32 pixel editor with a pretty intuitive interface that lets you map out thoughts in grayscale pretty quickly.

The idea is that you sketch out ideas on the move, then sync up and use more advanced software on your laptop or PC to do stuff such as color, animation and so on.

The beauty of good iPhone apps is that they do something simple and niche and they do it well. Instead of adding lots of bulky features that would only slow the app down and probably waste battery life, Caffeine Monster Software has stuck with the important functions.

Last year I built a Kid Wash and my kids have loved playing in it. We brought it out again yesterday with the great weather we had over the weekend and my son (age 12) came up with the idea of earning money over the summer by building and selling them locally. It's an easy enough project that I figure he can handle it and it is popular enough with the neighborhood children that he could also have some success in selling it.

However, the new CPSIA regulations have me worried that such a project (however small) will never get off the ground or we'll just be setting ourselves up for legal problems down the road. How do makers who build and sell toys deal with such regulations? Obviously if he was trying to make and sell something hazardous I wouldn't allow it, but how do we encourage such entrepreneurship without exposing ourselves to liabilities.

There was a huge outcry over the CPSIA regulations when they were announced because of their lack of consideration of the costs they would impose on small manufacturers, especially handmakers of one-of-a-kind toys and clothes. The CPSC voted to impose a stay of one year for testing and certification requirements, which expires February 10, 2010. These folks clearly realized there needs to be more thought put into the wide-sweeping rules that would devastate many small businesses. So you still aren't allowed to sell toys with lead paint, small choking-sized parts, etc., but you don't have to have your KidWash tested by a third party for lead and phthalates before selling them to your neighbors. Not until next year, at least.

Aujourd’hui chez Guignol, le délit de « négligence caractérisée» :

Si tu es internaute débutant ;
Si tu as acheté un ordinateur sous Windows avec Norton antivirus valable 1 mois et que tu ne comprends pas comment aquérir la licence ;
Si tu ne sais pas qu’il existe des antivirus et des firewall (heuuuu … c’est quoi un firewall ?) gratuits ;
Si tu ouvres les pièces jointes de tes emails ;
Si tu fais confiance à cette bouse que Microsoft ose appeler un firewall ;
Si tu n’arrives pas à te débarrasser d’un virus polymorphique parce que la base de registre et toi ça fait 4 ;
Si t’es pas foutu de voir à l’oeil nu que tu es victime d’un splendide arpspoofing ;
Si tu n’as pas un bac +6 en sécurité système et réseaux …

… tu te rends coupable de « négligence caractérisée» et on te coupera ta connexion, juste comme ça, parce que tu es trop con pour utiliser Internet ! Tu ne mérite pas d’accéder au réseau ! C’est l’article 3 bis d’HADOPI 2 qui le dit … et dire que c’est des Sénateurs de la commission des affaires culturelles tous plus glands les uns que les autres devant un ordinateur qui ont adopté ça !

Comment ça c’est injuste ? T’es retraité et à l’époque on t’as pas appris Internet à l’école ? On s’en fout c’est la Loi c’est comme ça et pas autrement !

Par contre, si tu es administrateur d’un site web gouvernemental qui stocke des données personnelles, tu as toujours le droit de faire n’importe quoi ! Toi, si tu fais de la merde, c’est pas de la négligence caractérisée… ce n’est pas du tout le genre de la maison hein ?

Il y a pire que l’amateurisme, c’est l’amateurisme d’un gus législateur qui pense « savoir» . Vivement un délit de législation débile caractérisée .

Old news to those that make music, perhaps, but new to me: Propellerheads, the people who make the delightful sequencer Reason (which I will someday actually buy instead of using the demo for a few days then getting scared to drop hundreds of dollars) are launching "Record", a companion recording suite that more than addresses what I've always found to be Reason's most glaring oversight: the inability to actually record analog instruments or vocals without another piece of software.

Which, I guess, it still does take another piece of software, but at least it's all be part of the same suite now. Since I'm still using Garage Band for most of my projects but have run my head up against its limitations finally, I may have to bite the bullet and get Reason and Record when it comes out of beta.

I especially love the part of the above overview video where they essentially teach guitarists how to convince their band vocalist why the software will help them sound more totally rock.

CNN a rédigé un article et nous rappelle avec nostalgie les célèbres “muscles car” américaines. Elles ont fait rêver des générations. Elles ont le style d’autrefois et pourtant elles restent intemporelles. A tel point que certaines retrouvent une nouvelle jeunesse puisque les constructeurs proposent certains modèles revisités comme la Dodge Charger. Elderly retired boxing champ beats six kinds of crap out of drunken burglar neighbour

A British hard-partying 24-year-old bartender got upset that his elderly neighbour called the cops over all the noise he was making, so he got drunk and broke into the 72-year-old's house, wielding some kind of Mall Ninja knife that incorporated brass knuckles. What he didn't know was that the neighbour was a retired boxing champ, and the older man beat the everloving crap out of the would-be assailant. The judge in the case sentenced the burglar to four and a half years and said, of the beating, "You got what you deserved."

As Waxy notes, the inane Facebook photos make this story even more delicious.

James' sweetie fabbed a nice piece of edible circuitry for him -

My girlfriend Sarah made this candy circuit board birthday cake topper. Originally she wanted to make a gingerbread MakerBot, but didn't have the time or space.

Instead she was inspired by the iPhone motherboard and went from there. The base is dark chocolate covered with green frosting. The resistors are Tic Tacs! That rainbow (sour straw?) ribbon cable is a nice touch as well :)
