Day 1: Borjomi – Green monastery

In the morning departure in the direction to Akhaltsikhe. The Chitakhevi St. George's Monastery is located in a picturesque place in the Borjomi valley. People called it lovingly “The Green Monastery”, because all the trees in the valley are of a special green color. The stones, with which the church is built, are also green. Scientists believe that the church was built by Christopher and Theodore, the disciples of the famous Georgian figure, St. Gregory Khandzteli. In the 16th century, during the invasions of Shah Thamaz, this monastery was raided. During this time dozens of monks were killed or tortured. The blood which remained on the stones thrown into the river Chitakhevi, belong to the monks killed in the 16thcentury. Bloody stones are spread along almost the entire length of the river running through the territory of the monastery. Later, a few meters away from the church, there was built a bell tower. The bell tower is two-storey. The first floor is a chapel, and the second floor is a richly carved pavilion. On the west surface area, below the arch, there is placed the relief of St. George fighting a whale. Over the centuries, the divine service was no longer performed at the church. In the early 80s of the past century the church was rehabilitated. In 2002, after many centuries, the monastery was restored. Return to Borjomi.

In the morning, we will depart towards Akhaltsikhe. Our first stop is the Eiffel Bridge — a railway viaduct on the Tsagveri–Tsemi section of the Borjomi–Bakuriani narrow-gauge railway. Built in 1902, it was designed by the atelier of Gustave Eiffel. Our next stop is Timotesubani, officially known as the Cathedral of the Dormition of the Most Holy Mother of God. Located in the Borjomi district of Georgia, 18 kilometers from the town of Borjomi, it stands on the right bank of the Gujarula River and belongs to the Borjomi and Bakuriani Eparchy. The cathedral was built on the ruins of an ancient monastery by the ruler of those lands, the Holy Martyr Prince Shalva Toreli-Akhaltsikheli, a national hero of Georgia. Construction began in 1195 and was completed in 1215. The ruins of residential and utility structures are still preserved on the monastery grounds. The entrance to the territory is an arched, elongated red-brick structure. A bell tower is believed to have been built above it, flanked by two-story rooms that served as the core of the monastery complex. On the northern terrace sits the single-nave Basilica of Saint Barbara the Great Martyr, and to the northeast of the church lie the stone remnants of a burial vault. Today, it is an active monastery for monks, with regular services held since 1994. Next, we will visit the Sadgeri Church of Saint George, which overlooks the Borjomula River. It is a hall church without a projecting altar, featuring a semicircular barrel vault of irregular contour. The building is constructed of dressed gray stone, with the joints covered in a thick layer of mortar that creates a frame-like effect around each stone. The church was, and still is, surrounded by a sturdy wall made of the same stone as the building itself. Currently, the Saint George Church in Sadgeri village operates as an active monastery. It once housed the treasured "Sadgeri Golden Cross," which is now kept in the State Gold Fund in Tbilisi. Deep in the woods of Borjomi lies a truly fairytale spot — the Church of Saint Seraphim of Sarov. It offers complete serenity, a wood-burning stove crackles inside, and the surrounding scenery is breathtaking. Right on the grounds, under a canopy, lies a large prayer stone. People from all corners of Georgia and beyond come here to write down their wishes and place small notes beneath it. Return to Borjomi.

Mount Kanobili has unique atmospheric conditions for astronomical observations. The altitude of Mt. Kanobili is 1650 to 1770m. above sea level. It is one of the best observatories among the same altitude with its observational conditions. At present in the Abastumani Astrophysical Observatory observational and theoretical research is carried out in many areas of astronomy and aeronomy: the Sun and solar system, binary and variable stars, star clusters, extragalactic objects, the Earth's atmosphere, solar terrestrial relationships. Visitors can observe the night sky through a unique telescope, converse with astronomers, and familiarize themselves with the unique collection in the museum.

Inspection of the local beach, cable car, and dolphinarium. Batumi – the "Georgian Singapore", the most famous Black Sea resort in Georgia with a population of 120,000 people. To feel the beauty of Batumi, you must take a walk along the Central Seaside 8-kilometer Boulevard and Park, one of the most beautiful on the Black Sea coast. The colored singing fountains located at the beginning and end of the park are a stunning sight. The hallmark of Batumi, a favorite place for locals and guests of the city, is Batumi Piazza, built in 2009. In 2010, a new, 7-meter, moving sculpture of Love became an adornment of the city. The statue represents the figures of a woman and a man. They yearn for each other, moving towards each other in a very original and beautiful way for 8-10 minutes, and eventually merge as one whole. Return to Borjomi.
