Langkawi comprises a group of 99 tropical islands lying off the north-western coast of Peninsular Malaysia ,about 30km (around 45minutes) from Kuala Perlis and 51km (around 1hrs 30minutes) from Kuala Kedah on the mainland .The main island is porpularly known as Pulau Langkawi .The island are blessed with an intriguing heritage of fabulous myths and legends of ogres and gigantic birds,warriors and fairy princess,battles and romance.As a natural paradise ,the islands are perharps unmatched anywhere else in Southeast Asia.With a geological history dating back 500 -million old years,the Langkawi island contain unique rock formationsthat stir the imagination and baffle the mind.

Langkawi Dataran Lang
Dataran Lang (Eagle Square) is Langkawi's most prominent landmark for visitors arriving by sea.

Situated near the Kuah jetty, the main attraction of the square is the magnificent statue of the reddish brown eagle majestically poised for flight. According to local folklore, Langkawi derived its name from the eagle or "helang". In old Malay, "kawi" denotes reddish brown, hence, Langkawi means reddish brown eagle!

The square is beautifully landscaped and features scenic ponds, bridges, covered terraces, restaurants and barrel vaults made of bricks. Its close proximity to the sea and the soft breezes make it an ideal spot for leisurely walks and a tranquil setting for dining in the cool evenings.

The square is beautifully illuminated at night and presents a dramatic scene as you approach the island by sea. Indeed, the majestic eagle is strategically positioned to welcome visitors to Langkawi.

Tasik Dayang Bunting
Nestled amidst lush forested hill on an island south of Pulau Langkawi is Tasik Dayang Bunting (Lake of the Pregnant Maiden), the largest lake in Langkawi. The outline of hills and rocky outcrops on one side of the lake resembles the shape of a pregnant maiden lying on her back. However, the name of both the island and lake is attributed to the legend of a lovely fairy princess who married an earthly prince. Her first child died shortly after birth. She was so sad and depressed that she buried the child in the crystal clear waters of the lake. Before she returned to her celestial abode, she blessed the waters so that any childless maiden who bathed in the lake would conceive thereafter.

Legend of Tasik Dayang Bunting - The favorite bathing pool of a celestial princess named Mambang Sari was said to be Tasik Dayang Bunting (lake of the pregnant maiden). A prince, Mat Teja, fell madly in love with her and tricked her into marrying him. It did not take her long to reciprocate his love and so could not bear to return to her celestial home. Sadly, their child died from a mysterious illness at the age of seven days. Distraught, the grieving Mambang Sari left the child's body in the lake and returned to her heavenly abode. Today, some believe barren women who bathe in this lake will be endowed with a child. Many have claimed to be successful.

Underwater World Langkawi
The underwater World Langkawi, a marine showcase featuring both fresh and salt water fish and other forms of marine life, is a must-see attraction. Located at Pantai Cenang, a popular beach on the island, this aquarium features more than 5,000 types of marine life, exhibited in more than 100 tanks of different sizes. The highlight is a giant tank housing large marine species such as sharks, stingrays, groupers and green turtles, with a 15-metre tunnel for visitors to walk through and enjoy a spectacular view of the exhibits. Underwater gardens of weeds and sea plants together with exotic fishes and exhibits of fossils and shells add to the range of interesting sights. Latest actraction is their penguins.

The magical of Perhentian Island

This image was taken during our one week office trip dated June 13, 2009. During my first step at the jetty, i was saying that "This is the most beautiful sea that I've ever seen in Malaysia".

With the clear blue water it had, really it was magnificent and unforgettable trip for all of us.

Located at the north-eastern coast of Peninsular Malaysia. About 21 km off shores the remote town of Kuala Besut. There are two lovely unspoiled island lie amidst exquisitely clear waters. Pulau Perhentian Kecil (Small Perhentian) and Perhentian Besar (Big Perhentian) comprise the Perhentian Island, aptly named after henti (stop) as fishermen from mainland Kelantan and Terengganu have, for centuries, stopped over at the island for a rest or to shelter during a major storm. A rocky virgin jungle provides hour of adventures for trekkers who may chance upon flying fox, long-tailed macaques and monitor lizards, while the underneath marine life shows off a splendid garden of coral.

How does we get there? As we are from KL, we started from Hentian Putra KL by bus. We bought a "KL - Kuala Besut" ticket and the journey took about 6 hours. Upon arriving at Kuala Besut, at 6.45am we took a speed boat and off to Perhentian Island and arrive at about 1/2hour later.
Then, we rent a few chalet for our group and enjoying our time over there for 4 days, 3 nights.

The best part is we went for snorkeling and able to catch a few very cute clown fish and watched jaws, turtle, coral and the magnificent underworld water. What a great time!

So, for u guys who planning to have a rest at a wonderful place and runaway from problems and traffic jams, this place is the best. Have a nice day.

Above picture shows the mother and two cute little kids of clown fish that we able to caught. A few minutes after that, we released it because we don't want Nemo families in the sea to get burden in "Finding Nemo" again. ;)
