Unnecessary Body Parts

We have a number of body parts that are, well, useless. Here are some facts about the body parts we don’t actually need.

Coccyx: This collection of fused vertebrae have no purpose these days, although scientists believe it’s what’s left of the mammal tail humans used to have. It may be useless, but when you break your coccyx, it’s still painful.
Pinkie toe: There is speculation that since we no longer have to run for our dinner, and we wear sneakers, the pinkie toe‘s evolutionary purpose is disappearing — and maybe the pinkie itself will go the way of the dodo.
Wisdom teeth: This third set of molars is largely useless, doing little beyond crowding the mouth and sometimes causing pain.
Vomeronasal organ: There are tiny (and useless) chemoreceptors lining the inside of the nose.
Most body hair: While facial hair serves some purposes, the hair found on the rest of body is practically useless and can be removed with few ill effects.
Female vas deferens: A cluster of dead end tubules near the ovaries are the remains of what could have turned into sperm ducts.
Male Uterus: Yeah, men have one too — sort of. The remains of this undeveloped female reproductive organ hangs on one side of the male prostate gland
Appendix: Yep, your appendix is basically useless. While it does produce some white blood cells, most people are fine with an appendectomy.

Random Weird Body Facts

Here are a few final weird facts about the human body.

Your head creates inner noises: It’s rare, but exploding head syndrome exists.
Memory is affected by body position: Where you are and how you are placed in your environment triggers memory.
You can’t tickle yourself: Go ahead. Try to tickle yourself.
Being right-handed can prolong your life: If you’re right-handed, you could live up to nine years longer than a lefty.
Only humans shed emotional tears: Every other animal that produces tears has a physiological reason for doing so.

Planking is gaining world popularity by storm. I came up with this entry because I see a lot of people on Facebook who are interested in it. It made me curious, so I did a little research.

What is planking? The phenomenon of planking involves lying face down in a public place - the stranger the better - and posting photos on social networking sites such as Facebook. Aficionados lie expressionless with a straight body, hands by their sides and toes pointing into the ground.

It is now a craze around the world and is believed to have originated from Australia. (I wonder if Kangaroos also play planking?)

According to BBC News, a man has died in Australia after taking part in the internet phenomenon of planking. The victim, a man in his 20s, fell from a balcony railing in Brisbane while a friend photographed him, according to police.

The World's Busiest Airport is?

Global aviation organization Airports Council International (ACI) has released its World Airport Traffic Report for 2010, with London, Paris and Hong Kong taking out the first three places in terms of international passenger traffic.

According to the report, worldwide airport passenger numbers increased by 6.6 percent in 2010 to 5.04 billion. Worldwide domestic traffic increased by 5.8 percent while international traffic jumped by 7.7 percent.

London's Heathrow airport remained the busiest in the world, handling over 60 million international passengers. The big mover was South Korea's Incheon, which moved into the top ten in 2010. Madrid fell out of the top 10, Incheon moved into 8th place and Tokyo dropped from 8th in 2009 to 9th.

Just a week ago, Apple became America's most valuable company. A position previously held by GE and Microsoft. In 1990's, nobody thought that Apple can reach that success, but now everyone wants "an" Apple, I guess Steve Jobs is really doing his job.

More consumer are hooked into Apple's products because of its sleek and minimalists design. People are still buying an i-Phone and an i-Pad considering the higher price. They don't care if it hurts their savings, even during recession! People are crazy about it, on the day of the release of a new product, the lines, even before the stores open are incredible. The reason is, they love Apple's innovation.

Speaking of innovation, if recent rumors are true, not only will the individual consumers go crazy about the new feature, also it will create a buzz on Apple's newest target, the business consumers. If it is accurate,
Apple just patented a new feature for their product, they have been working on it since 2009, and now it is closer to reality.
Rumor says, that the i-Phone 5 will include a built-in projector, which is a very good tool for business presentation. Also it will change the way we share viral videos. There'll be no need to huddle together over someone’s shoulder to watch that Youtube clip. Now the videos can be projected on the nearest wall or maybe even as a hologram, just like science fiction movies.

So Apple says, this changes everything. Again.

Above Average IQ

I watched a documentary called "Stupid in America". I am surprised that American public school was that bad. In the documentary, a public school in South Carolina is very incompetent despite the budget they are getting from the government. I never thought of it to be the case. Maybe because I look up to America as the home of the best universities in the world, but I realized, those were privately run. I also spent my elementary and secondary years in a public school in the Philippines, but the teachers and the school itself was competitive enough. Well, at least the school that I have gone to. The Philippine government has among the lowest spending on education in Asia. There have been a lot of debates in the Congress and in the Senate to uplift the quality of education in the country, I hope our legislators are ending up with the best measures.

According to Intelligence and the Wealth and Poverty of Nations by Richard Lynn, the Philippines ranked 52 among 127 nations with an average IQ of 86 which is on the "dullness" range. Out of 127 nations, only 40 are on the range classified as "normal" or average intelligence (91-110), while none has an average IQ higher than that. (See the country ranking below.)

I was curious to learn what my IQ is, so I took an online IQ test on Free-IQTest.net, (which they claimed to be accurate), and I scored 117, which is above average according to their classification. I am kinda proud of it because if I didn't score good, I would have not posted this blog entry. ☺

According to BBC:

"A person's Intelligence Quotient (IQ) is, arguably, one of their most important characteristics. It is believed that you can predict a person's behavior more accurately from their IQ than from any other single piece of information about them."

There have been a lot of debates about intelligence. My teacher once told us, "No student is dumb, they are just too lazy to study." I'm sorry ma'am, I beg to disagree. I believe intelligence is in the genes, no matter how hard he study, if the person is dumb, he is always dumb. Am I mean enough?haha. Though, I believe, it can be improved by the way the school and the society is teaching you. Improvement, however, will be minimal as compared to those "who has intelligence in their genes".

Some psychologist have came up with a different way of measuring intelligence,the multiple intelligence. You can be dumb on some but excel on the other. According to Psychologist Howard Gardner, there are seven types of intelligence. So don't worry if you don't excel academically, because you could be intelligent in music, dancing, sports, and interpersonal relationship. Let me tell you, I am really dumb when it comes to music and dancing, no matter how I study, it's just not for me. ☺

If you're curious what your IQ is, try the test. And don't be affected by people judging you based on your IQ, always remember that it's always your character that matters.

Enough of the drama. I just wanted to share this very wonderful creation by Yacht Island Design, a ship-building company based in the UK, the boat, or should we say, mobile island, has all the standard features of your typical floating palace: swimming pool, guest cabanas, helicopter landing
pad, bar, outdoor dining, a volcano. What? Yes, a volcano -- that spews water, not scorching magma. Two of the suites are located inside the faux rock formation, with guest rooms located on either side of the pool. To the rear is a deployable beach deck which allows access to the sea and all your water-based toys. And all of these are customizable!

I think, I will spend my whole life working for this, and it won't be enough. LOL. Well, just enjoy the photo gallery and try to figure out how you can own this. ☺

This is a very interesting trick but I haven't tried it yet though. Our office building has two floors only and we don't have an elevator, so I need your help to prove this.

This will be helpful for the people whose office or unit is located in the higher floors of the building.

You know, it's really annoying when the elevator stops on every floor when you needed to get to your destination asap, and ironically it happens when you have the least time! I wish I knew this trick before because it already happened to me several times when I was still in the Philippines.

The World's Tallest Building, SOON

Who says there is a global recession? Well, true enough for US and Europe, but here in saudi Arabia, that is a lie. This oil-rich kingdom is planning to construct a $20-billion worth building, the Kingdom Tower! It is a supertall skyscraper approved for construction in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. It will be the centerpiece and first phase of a new development known as Kingdom City located along the Red Sea on the north side of Jeddah.

The building will stand over 0.62 miles (one kilometer) tall, which will allow it to overshadow the 2,717 ft. (828 m) Burj Khalifa in Dubai to claim the title of the world's tallest building.

Kingdom Tower will contain 59 elevators, some designed to travel 10 meters per second! Including 54
single-deck and five double-deck elevators, as well as 12 escalators. At level 157, it has an awesome "Sky Terrace" which will become the world's tallest observatory as well.

The construction is estimated to be completed by 2017.

I will be 28years old then, and if I decided not to go back to the Philippines until is fully-constructed, it means that I will live here in Saudi Arabia for 6 years which is just enough to adhere to the Nitaqat System. (p.s. > Saudization: Yellow companies may renew work visas for up to six years for each foreign employee, but I actually don’t know the status of my company.)

Let me think…,uhm,.. nah, I don't really plan to stay here for that long, I will miss the Philippines, but who knows? My brother was in Dubai for 5 straight years, now, he is in Qatar, and has no plans of going home yet. Haha ☺

Make Your Stay Abroad Worthwhile

Living and working abroad is an interesting experience. You will meet a lot of other nationalities, you'll get to work with them, interact in a day-to-day basis. There are few things I learned to make my stay worthwhile.

1. Start learning the local language.

For sure, it will be very hard, but at least make an effort to learn. It can be helpful to your job. It will help you communicate better to the locals. Once in a while, you will meet someone who doesn't speak English at all. Surf the net for some basic lessons and interact with native speakers. Learning a new language is fun.

2. Never Argue
If you are fond of arguing in your native land, leave that habit. You are in a foreign country, you don't want to be in trouble. Do not ever argue in any topic, think before you respond. If you think it can be offensive, keep it to yourself. Use your judgment. Arguing is only productive if you are in the congress, well, not even.

3. Follow Rules
Make yourself aware of the country's strict laws. Most of their laws can be similar to your originating country's law, but the punishment will be different. It can be heavier than you expect.

4. Respect its Culture
Cultural difference is a given. Respect their tradition as how you want your tradition to be respected. Learn to respect and you will earn it.

5. Be friendly but not too much
Yeah, you were crowned as the Mr. or Ms. Congeniality and friendliness is your best asset, but don't do it too much. You probably know what is too much, right? I was told once in a seminar, if you are abroad, not to trust people too much, even if you have the same nationality.

Adjustment is a process, a process of moving on. If you are used to doing things in your native land, and those things are never allowed in the country you're in, you have to stop it. As a foreigner, you have, you need and you must obey their rules.

Internet Explorer is for Dumb Users, study suggests

I came up with this interesting and very controversial story on Yahoo about a study stating that if you are an Internet Explorer user, you are likely to have a lower IQ than those who uses Chrome, Firefox, Safari or Opera.

It is based on an online study participated by more than 100,000 people as conducted by AptiQuant Psychometric Consulting Co.

I remember when I was in first year college, I was told to do research on browsers. I was an IE user then. At that time, IE had the biggest share on

the browser market. As years past, other browsers had taken a pie on the significantly high market share of Microsoft's browser due to its poor performance and a slow response on bug issues.

Most web developers hate Internet Explorer as it does not comply with the W3C standards. Try to view this blog on an older IE browser, it will be different. It won't read some of the CSS and javascripts.

When I was still working with usairways.com as a Technical support rep, we had a lot of complaints about the websites functionality especially on printing the boarding passes, most of these complaints came from customers who uses Internet Explorer. So, the normal troubleshooting method is to ask customer to download Firefox instead. And it was pretty effective, as the website functions properly if viewed on Firefox rather than IE. (Our company was using IE on all the workstations, but I had a really intelligent colleague who was able to download Firefox despite of the company's powerful firewall. We then distributed it to everyone.)

The Philippines has one of the lowest vegetable consumption in Asia, and according to the news, despite of the high level of malnutrition among Filipino youths, Philippines has also become the 3rd fattest population next to Malaysia and Singapore.

Let us support this initiative. Embrace a healthier diet.
Encourage your family to eat vegetables, a healthier
substitute and a very good source of vitamins. Giving up meat once a week is a good habit and not too much to ask, with the health and environmental benefits, it's really worth it.
