Copenhagen, Denmark, Oct 05, 2010

I was due to leave Copenhagen the next day and i had absolutely no plans made as to where i was going next. But by chance i spoke to the Ariel, the friend from Argentina i had met in Bergen, Norway on Facebook and he had the idea to meet up on Stockholm and work our way across to Finland and then do the Baltic countries. So i said "ok", got everything book that i needed to and then went to explore the city of Copenhagen a little more.

Early into walking around there was a bit of a crowd and police presence outside Christiansborg Palace and initially i didn't think too much of it at the time and continued to walk around a bit more. It wasn't until an hour or so later when i was heading back that way i decided to satisfy my curious side and see what was happening. So i entered the area where the public were allowed to stand and lo-behold, literally 30 seconds later an entourage of 3 or 4 limo's turn up and to my amazement, out steps Princess Mary!

I tried desperately to get a good shot of her! But by the time my camera was ready to take the shot, she'd turn her back or someone would walk in her way! lol! None-the-less it was quite an amazing experience to see her! Not everyday you meet someone from Tasmania. :P And she shares the same birthdate as me, which is special also. :D

Anyway, after all that i thought it was a good opportunity to have a look inside the Natural History Museum. It was free entry, so why not? :P Of all the Historical museums i have been in, i have to say this one is by far the most impressive one! Lots of history to be told on Copenhagen and Denmark in general right from the begining. There was also an Egyptian exhibition on at the time, which was quite interesting also.

I have written a couple of reviews on Denny's restaurants included the most recent in Las Cruses, New Mexico. It has become one of my favorite breakfast stops when I'm on the road. Leaving Las Vegas after the Travbuddy Reunion meet-up, we made a breakfasts top at Denny's before the 8 hour road trip back to Las Vegas. I normally order their supreme sizzling breakfast platter. It is a meal in itself included in is small pieces of potatoes, sliced chillies, cheese, roman tomatoes, spinach, and scrambled eggs. Nothing like their hot cup of tea. Comes with honey and lemon. Definitely a better alternative to McDonald's.

I recommend this is especially if you ar eon the raod with your family. The price is right, the food is great and the service is commendable. Like McDonald's, I have found that certain Denny's have better interiors and ambiance than others. This location in Las Vegas was a little bit of a disappointment for me, compared with my Las Cruces experience. My platter was a little different, perhaps because I had anticipated it too much, prior to sitting down.

Denny's serve Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner.

Charleroi Airport goes sometimes under the name Brussels South with is a major overstatement; the airport is situated 63 kilometres if you drive the freeway from Brussels Airport in Zaventem. There is a fast bus from both from Zaventem and from Central Station in Brussels and the will take you there in just less than an hour.

The airport is not too big and it is also quite modern; the airport host many low price carriers and as such the airport is pure luxury. The new terminal opened in January 2008 and it has a capacity of up to 5 million passengers a year.

The Airport is also home of some important Flight Schools like Belgian Flight School which offers complete pilot training and Brussels Aviation School offering Private Pilot and Night Flight Qualification training.

Las Vegas, Nevada, Feb 04, 2011

I was in Las Vegas for the second time this year, to attend the Las Vegas Travbuddy Reunion Meet-Up. The Pre-meet up was scheduled for Friday at the PBR Rock Bar & Grill located inside Planet Hollywood. They offer a combination of entertainment including music, a mechanical bull (which we did not get on), and an outside patio, which we did not use either as the night was rather chilly.
The interior is open, with dinning tables set all around to accommodate many people. The large screen TVs all around provided the different football games being played, while the speakers played music without interfering with the TV and the voices of the people sitting to dinner. Overall the ambiance was good.

I want to write more about the service, food and drinks that we received. I arrive late as usual (I have a perfectly good reason). Most of everyone in attendance had ordered food and drinks. They had a special of Landshark Beer on sale at 2 for the price of one. I'm not a beer drinker, but I decided since everyone was trying it, I would do the same. Mark, on the other hand was excited since he is the beer drinker.

Food: we ordered food from the menu, our service guy was quite efficient and pleasant. He took our orders, and by the time I was done saying hello to everyone, my food was at the table. I ordered a light dinner of salad with vinaigrette and pork strips, topped with goat cheese. I do not believe I had had a salad like this one before. The freshness, taste and presentation just blew me away. As if that was not enough, the price was unbelievable. I paid just $6.00 for what could have gone for $20 elsewhere. Mark ordered the Chicken burger, which he confessed was delicious. The food choices can be categorized as both comfort foods as well as continental in the sense that if fits for all occasions.

I'm big on service, I can't say it enough. Since I'm and have always been in the service industry, I look for it when I travel. I will compliment and tip based on the level of service. If you ask me, the service team at PBR got an A for service the night I was there. I gave them an “A” only because they were very busy, but they got every one served in a timely manner, they were upbeat in spirits and were helpful in directing us where we wanted to go prior to the dance. I would go back there in a heartbeat.

I did regret not using the patio as it is located at such a vantage point for people watching. I do enjoy people watching, especially when in Vegas. There is no better place than a patio facing the strip. PBR Rock Bar & Grill has it right!

Highly recommended for groups, individuals, families, couples.

Just returned from our Lighthouse Reef Trip and it was amazing!! We stayed in the Half Moon Caye basecamp - picture luxury camping: semi-permanent tents with wooden platforms and real beds (with sheets!), clean compost toilets, and fully catered and delicious meals (3 a day, + snacks and appetizers, etc). We went snorkeling and sea kayaking every day, had the opportunity to go fishing with our Belizean guide James (a prince of a guy) and learned abut the ecosystem of the coral reefs from Jack, a wilderness biologist and our lead guide. We travelled with an 11 year old, and it was a perfect trip for him as well. The price (1700 for 8 days) was MUCH cheaper than if we'd stayed in a conventional resort, and we saw more, learned more, and impacted the environment less doing it this way. Can't imagine a better way to spend the money or the time. Thank you, Island Expeditions!!

Dubrovnik, Croatia, Jul 11, 2010

First Day: Arrival and Explore

Dubrovnik was the main purpose of my Dalmatia trip. In other words, it was the real dream destination of this journey. From Split, it is possible to reach Dubrovnik either by bus or ship. (Maybe you can reach by plane, but I have no info about that). The town located 5 hours away from Split by bus, and this bus trip provides an amazing view.

The ride has started good for me, until I realized that I was travelling with one of the most annoying community of the world: A bunch of Fraternity Boys and Sorority Girls. OK, I need to be fair, girls were pretty gentle to everyone, but those frat guys, why you exist??? You not only insult yourself, but also you embarrass your country and nation with your ugly behaviour.

Anyways, the view were still good, and I tried to enjoy it. Before arriving Dubrovnik, you pass through the Croatia-Bosnia Herzegovina border twice, and the bus takes a 30 mins break in the town Neum. After the break, approximately 1 hour later you arrive Dubrovnik. And when you see the fancy Franjo Tudjman Bridge, you're in Dubrovnik anymore.

A Dalmatian classic, when you hop off the bus, a bunch of local people surrounds you to rent a room. If you have no place to stay, you can deal with them, but during the high season of June,July and August, do not expect remarkable discount. Because, they prefer to wait for the next bus to find new tenants =) My advice is, try to find a decent room which is close to Stari Grad (Old Town), or you may consider somewhere close to the bus station or the port. Public bus service in Dubrovnik is pretty good and reasonable.

As always, I recommend you to stop by the tourist info office, it's located just after the entrance of the old city (Pile Gate) and the beginning of the Stradun. You can grab some flyers, and also you can get some info about daily excursion to the islands, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Montenegro etc. If you need to exchange money there are bunch of exchange offices around, but be careful and ask about do they charge for a commision before you exchange it.

The day I arrived Dubrovnik was the the day the World Cup'2010 Final between Spain and Netherlands. So I was looking for a place to have dinner while I can watch the game. I need to say that Dubrovnik is more expensive than Split for restaurant prices, especially inside the walls. Even pizza is not that cheap. However, seafood is pretty good here, but (after my Croatian friends' suggestions) you need to ask that if it's fresh or frozen. Also, Dubrovnik locals highly recommends about Zubatac, Brancini, Lokarda (Grilled) and Kalimari in terms of seafood of Dalmatia.

My houseowner recommended me the beach of Hotel Bellevue which is close to my location and clean. So if you're gonna stay Gruz or East Lapad zone, you may consider this.

Elephants have always been my favourite animals - not because of their size or strength but because they are social animals concerned for each others safety and health. If humans used elephants as models, they would probably have less conflict and live happier lives. But despite their fellow-feeling, bad things happen to good elephants. And, that is why the David Sheldrick Elephant and Rhinoceros Orphanage exists. The orphanage is carefully managed to prevent the elephants from becoming so aclimated to human contact that they cannot be successfully repatriated to the wild - so public viewing is restricted to a short time each day.

First to come on stage was a baby elephant just a few months into her first year. I forget what caused her to be orphaned but elephants at this age are very vulnerable. They can't protect their skin from sunburn by rolling in mud or dust. Normally they would shelter and nurse under the mother's belly but a baby orphaned at this age would be in mourning and depressed very much like a human baby and - in the absense of of food, protection and aid from the mother - the baby would stand in the sun until it died from starvation and sunburn.

Some of the staff have worked with orphanned elephants for decades. They know exactly what the babies need and how to provide it. For example: sun protectiion. The staff will spread sunscreen on the baby's skin, wrap her in blankets and shade her with umbrellas. When they feed her they wrap the bottle in fabric that is similar in colour to the absent mother

The objective of the Sheldrick orphanage is to ensre the srvival of young elephants whose parents have died or been separated from them and

I thought Mother's was one of THE places to eat while in New Orleans. I wasn't overly impressed.

Mother's is located on Poydras Street. Upon entering, a man gave us a menu, told us to order at the counter and go sit down. Okay. There was a line at the counter, and it still wasn't enough time to look over the menu. You almost need to know what you want before you get there. The gal behind the register is a little impatient, and almost unwilling to answer questions. After sitting, a waiter will come to your table and claim your receipt to deliver your food to you.

Mother's is known for their baked ham, so I ordered a baked ham po'boy. The sandwich was $10, but it was HUGE. The ham had a velvety texture; the sandwich was really good, with coleslaw and dill pickles on it. The bread was nice and chewey.

Would I recommend Mother's? Sure. But, there are so many different places to eat in New Orleans that I wouldn't put it as the number one priority.

We went to the Delta works to see the massive engineering feat that had been pulled off to keep the water out of Zeeland.

Obviously, we decided to visit the biggest site - Neeltje Jans. It is an artificial island in the middle of the Oosterscheldekering.

Unexpectedly, we found an amusement park there 'Delta park Neeltje Jans'. Roughly, the park consists of three parts: The actual dam, a children's playground and an exposition about the great flood in 1953 and the delta works.

While we found the Dam and exposition very interesting, the childrens playground part was mostly closed. So we felt that the admission fee was a bit on the pricy side (in the low season). Note that if you have children, they will definitely love it and the admission will be cheaper for them (we were 4 adults, only coming for the dam).

Arriving in Salzburg later than I hoped, since the train was running behind schedule. I put my backpack in one of the lockers, and tried to figure out which bus went to the city center. Once I got on the right one, I rode it close to Old Town. Then got off once it crossed the river, and then ran to the Salzburg Panorama 1829 museum, hoping to visit it before it closed.

I got there, and I was too late, as the museum was not admitting any more people. I was not sure what to do, and considered just leaving town. But then, I remember the funicular ride to Hohensalzburg Fortress. The museum there, was closed, but the castle grounds were still open. And the price of the funicular ride was a lot cheaper. So I decided to do that, and rode it to the top of the hill.

On our way to Starbucks and then another restaurant for breakfast, we drove by the Tiffin Inn Pancake House. Hold the phone -- pancakes? We are eating here!

This was truly a local's restaurant. I would say there wasn't a tourist here, but there were two -- me and my cousin. The waitresses practically knew everyone by name, and being Sunday morning, there were several families eating breakfast.

The menu had twelve different varieties of pancakes, plus there was a full breakfast menu. The pancake choices included regular buttermilk (short stack, stack, or silver dollar) pancakes, strawberry or blueberry pancakes, Hawaiian, as well as others. The variety that caught my eye: chocolate! Five chocolate pancakes drizzles with chocolate syrup and swirled with whipped cream. Oh, my goodness! These pancakes were go-ood. I never would have thought of putting chocolate syrup and pancakes together, but it works well!

Breakfast wasn't expensive, $7 for the stack of five pancakes. And, to be quite honest, some of the waitstaff, our waitress included, could be a little gruff. She did her job by taking our order and bringing our food, but she wasn't overly friendly at all.

Turtle Bread was recommended by a friend who lives a few blocks away. We were gathered to watch another friend run the Twin Cities Marathon, but met here for a delicious breakfast first. They have an assortment of artisan breads, pastries, quiche, and made to order breakfasts.

The large, open floor has plenty of tables to sit at, plus several tables and shelves of goodies to choose from. You can see the bakery operations behind the dining area.

I ordered a ham and cheese scramble with rosemary potatoes. It was delicious! My friend ordered a quiche from the display case that was heated up for her and she thought it was one of the best quiches she had eaten. I loved the assortment of breads and pastries and even bought an almond covered roll for later (it was very good!).

Parking is somewhat limited on the street. This is more of a neighborhood store that people walk to from their homes. But it is definitely worth a visit, especially if you are looking for Artisan breads or fresh rolls reminiscent of Europe.

The unexpected return to Vienna, gave me a chance to do a couple more things there. It was weird making an unplanned return, but glad that I did. First thing was Schonbrunn Palace, which was a little farther out.

I got to the palace grounds, which was huge and more spread out. I went inside, and bought the ticket to the Grand Tour. More about the palace in the review, but I thought the tour of this palace was more interesting than that of the Hofburg. The only downside, was dealing with the numerous tour groups, clogging up the corridors, making it hard to navigate around the place.

After seeing the palace itself, I headed out to the gardens. Very huge and elaborate, with the fountain and monument at the other end. I can just imagine royalty looking out, and walking around the gardens. I did go up to the fountain, and stopped there. I did not spend much time there, as I looked around. It was a nice place to walk around, and I'm sure even more so if it was sunny.

After the palace, I headed to St. Stephen's Cathedral, as I had one more thing to do in Vienna. And it was climbing to the top of the south tower, in the winding, narrow stairs. Even though I've done this type of thing before, it never gets any easier, especially when running into people heading in the opposite direction. I did make it to the top, getting some nice views of the city.

Going back down, my visit to Vienna has been completed. Or at least, I was satisified with it. I would go pick up my backpack at the hostel, and to the train station, as I headed to Salzburg.
