In my work as a contributing writer to Travel Gay Seattle TGS I have the great fortune of visiting some of the most impressive restaurants, hotels, stores and resorts in the Northwest. These businesses not only take their particular service or product to the next level but they do so in a fashion that welcomes all. Many of us in the LGBT community have felt the bitter sting of being “unwelcome” but I can assure you that when you visit Seattle you ARE welcome, in fact you are celebrated. This is the feeling that you get when you walk through the front doors at Elaia, you are one of the family from the very beginning.

When I began working with Leah, the Spa Manager at Elaia Spa @ Hyatt Olive 8, I was most impressed with her ability to communicate the “welcome” policy she insists upon at her spa. I love working with people like this, she gets it and so does her impressive team of spa professionals, this place is all about people and it’s that philosophy that will color your whole experience.

My day was planned by Leah herself with an early check-in, steam, sauna and an hour by the indoor pool which set the stage for an entire afternoon of subtle indulgence and luxury. Before my massage was scheduled to begin I was invited into a beautiful room with wonderful light and cucumber water, which next to cucumber martini is my favorite flavor. I lounged for a bit listening to the new age’ish music, sipped my water and was greeted warmly by my masseur, Caleb. He was fun from the moment we met, professional with a great sense of humor. I had taken an unfortunate stumble the week before which had my back aching and his skill and technical ability helped it immensely. Once finished I again retired to the sauna, steam room and the pool before hitting the showers. I left feeling rejuvenated, bliss’d out and ready for that cucumber martini in the lounge---I know you’re not supposed to, but I won’t tell if you won’t.

The menu of spa treatments is impressive with massage, nails and many therapies--some of which I had not even heard about, these folks do it all.

Joan Rivers' career spans almost 50 years, and during that time, she's done it all. Rivers has starred in numerous television shows, performed countless times on the Tonight Show, hosted her own talk show, produced a wildly successful line of jewelry, won Donald Trump's Celebrity Apprentice reality game show, and is also a bestselling author.

Rivers doesn't just perform comedy; she lives for it. Rivers has the amazing ability to turn any topic - no matter how controversial or taboo - into a joke. Her courage to acknowledge topics that otherwise would be left in the dark has helped millions of people throughout her career find the light in even the grimmest topics: 9/11, suicide, and getting older.

Rivers is bringing her politically incorrect and totally hilarious show to the Pantages Theater in Tacoma on November 4.

Joshua Michael Rumley: Good morning! How are you doing today, Ms. Rivers?

Joan Rivers: Well, I'm still alive.

Rumley: Thank God for that.

Rivers: [Laughs.] Well, I'm not sure about my dog, Samantha. Josh, today was going really well until she got into the caramels. I honestly think she might be dead.

Rumley: Oh God, is she even moving?

Rivers: Well, she's just lying there now. I'm so sorry, let's get back to this.

Rumley: Congratulations on Fashion Police!

Rivers: Oh yes, we were picked up again for another season, which is great. I think I'm becoming the Simon Cowell of comedy.

Rumley: Or maybe Simon Cowell is becoming the Joan Rivers of music?

Rivers: [Laughs.] It's really just so much fun doing the show.

Rumley: Well, you do have every Gay man's dream job: getting paid to judge people.

Rivers: I know, I know, I know. The audience for the show is just so amazing. I feel like Gay men truly get the jokes best, and that is what makes it so great. Our writers for the show (we have five - well, I'm one, so we have four), two of them are Gay. It's such a great experience. We sit around and we write jokes together. We really do just love doing the show together.

Rumley: Your co-host, George Kotsiopoulos, is absolutely adorable. Is he single?

Rivers: Oh yes, he is very single, and he is such a nice man - he isn't mean at all. He looks just like the actor Cornel Wilde. [My daughter] Melissa actually found George. We had a different guy on before him, and George is such a great fit.

Rumley: Have you had any pushback from celebrities who are talked about on the show?

Rivers: One of the girls from Glee was very upset, actually - Amber, I think her name was. We wanted to have her come on the show and she refused. The funny thing is we said nice things about her the week before the show where we had an issue with her outfit. We all decided that she is an idiot - we weren't mean about it. The show is doing well; it's not meant to be nasty, it's meant to be funny. It's supposed to be how all of us sit around and talk about people, how we all talk with our friends.

Rumley: Kelly Osbourne had a lot to say about Christina Aguilera recently. I love your comment about her: 'Well, it looks like Lady Marmalade got into the peanut butter again.'

Rivers: You know we all have our likes and our hates. Christina should just watch her back, though.

Rumley: Your other show, Joan & Melissa: Joan Knows Best, was also picked up for a new season.

Rivers: Oh yeah, it's great. We are still filming the second season, but I did see the first episode and I really enjoyed what I saw.

Rumley: Have you enjoyed living under the same roof as your daughter Melissa again?

Rivers: You want to know something terrible? I actually love it. It's very comfortable. I just walk downstairs and there is my room. I know, I know, it may sound stupid, but it's been great. I think Melissa is the one who has to adjust to me living with her again. What do they say? It takes three months to become happy in jail?

Rumley: [Laughs.] My mother actually keeps threatening to move in with me.

Rivers: Are you Gay or straight?

Rumley: Very Gay.

Rivers: It's very hard, then.

Rumley: I could put her on a cot in the living room.

Rivers: [Laughs.] Well, there goes your social life.

Rumley: Who is the bigger diva in Hollywood, Miss Piggy or Ryan Seacrest?

Rivers: [Laughs.] Well, you know Ryan has been great to me. I really think it was Piggy. I could tell you some diva stories, one after another. I just want to tell them to calm down. On the road I follow, a lot of these people are around. You go and you do your concert for one night. You should always ask for a clean dressing room, a clean bathroom, a bottle of red wine, and coffee. You don't ask them to redecorate the whole dressing room! There are a lot of divas floating around out there.

Rumley: Do you consider yourself a diva?

Rivers: [Laughs.] We do get very spoiled in the business, though, especially with things you don't think about anymore. Of course when you get off a plane, there is a car waiting for you. If not, you're like, 'Wait, where's the car?! Oh my God, I have to take a taxi with the normal people?!'

Rumley: [Laughs.] Are you excited for your return to the Seattle area next weekend?

Rivers: Yes, I absolutely love that part of the country. It's beautiful.

Rumley: It's nice and foggy today.

Rivers: That's good for the skin, though. Plus you don't have to feel guilty about staying indoors and relaxing.

Rumley: It would be a good day to re-watch Joan Knows Best.

Rivers: Exactly! Re-watch all eight episodes.

Rumley: What can fans expect from your show next weekend?

Rivers: Well, expect to hear about everything that annoys me, because everything that annoys me I'm sure annoys you as well. If you're politically correct, please don't come. Well, anybody can come, but I'm very mad about the politically correct people. Just shut up and get a job.

Rumley: I know a lot of people are trying to get jobs.

Rivers: Well, a lot of those people are not in New York.

Rumley: Have you gone down to the Occupy Wall Street protests?

Rivers: I did when it first started, but the Occupy Wall Street thing has turned into one big party. It was a good thing and now there is a lot of drinking and drugs.

Rumley: Seattle was recently voted as one of the 10 cities with the worst fashion. What advice can you give us?

Rivers: [Laughs.] Really, it was?! Do you want women or men first?

Rumley: Women.

Rivers: The one thing I tell women is to a get a plain black dress, that's all I care about. The Nazi-looking Chanel black dress always looks great. Then I would just recommend people accessorize it. Men, I think every man needs to have a nice blazer and jeans. I think they also need to have at least one great dark suit.

Rumley: Is there any topic that is too taboo to joke about?

Rivers: No topic is too taboo. If I think its funny, then I'm going to joke about it. I love to stretch into things that people don't want to acknowledge. If you can acknowledge it with humor, you can get people to start thinking about it. The more horrible the topic, the more laughing at it will help. Let me tell you something: I've been through everything. At this age, I've seen it all. My mother was blind at the end, I went with a man who was missing a leg, my husband committed suicide, and I had a friend with postpartum depression who threw her kid out a window. That's how I get through things, by laughing. Shit, that's how everyone does it. The New York Times said 100 laughs a day does what 10 minutes of aerobic exercise does for the body.

Rumley: So by the end of your show next week, I'll have a nice set of six-pack abs.

Rivers: [Laughs.] We all will! I'd rather laugh through something. Your whole body relaxes when you laugh.

Rumley: I know there is a legion of Gay people awaiting your return to Seattle.

Rivers: Thank God!

Rumley: When did you realize you had a Gay following?

Rivers: I realized that Gay people thought I was funny when I first started to do shows in Greenwich Village. Gay men were the first people to come in and see my shows. They would laugh and I was like, 'Oh!' I've always had Gay friends. All my summer jobs in college were doing window displays, and who else would you expect to meet other than Gay men doing that? Thank God!

Rumley: Why do you think the Gays identify with you?

Rivers: I'm an outsider. I think Gay men are able to see the humor in a lot more things then straight men. I've always said that Gay men are the best combination of men and women. Gay men get the man humor, and they also have all the bitchiness that women have. Trust me, we will have a ball at the show next week. I've said, 'Show me six Gay men in the front row, and I will show you the best show ever.'

Rumley: What message would you like the audience to leave with after your show next week at the Pantages Theater in Tacoma?

Rivers: Don't ever feed your dog caramels! Josh, you and I have learned a valuable lesson today. I actually think she might be dead. I actually want people to walk out of the show and think I was funny. I'm at the top of my game right now, and I just don't give a shit anymore. This is what I want to talk about, so here it is!

POCO Wine Room; a glass of something special!

It’s a quiet and warm spring night in 2008 when a couple of new friends, Peter and Bart invited me to join them for a glass of wine at their newly opened wine bar, POCO Wine Room. We hit it off immediately over our respective love of wine or more importantly champagne! I still remember arriving that first evening not knowing what to expect, the entry in this brand new building is sleek and modern, situated on the corner of the building with sun pouring in from the two story floor-to-ceiling windows. I opened the door and was immediately captivated by the simple elegance and warm groove that glows from every corner of the eclectic room. By far the most striking feature is the wood textured wall that anchors the space and borders the stairs. An architectural element unlike anything else you will find in Seattle, the two story wall was designed and built by Rick Jones, POCO Manager. Be sure to ask Rick about it when you stop in! The upper space is intimate, romantic and beautifully decorated--the perfect date spot.

Over the years POCO has grown to be known as THE wine bar on Capitol Hill, it doesn’t get any better! Two years ago a wonderful outdoor patio was opened that is the perfect spot for lazy summer evenings sipping wine and visiting with friends. Each year the boys produce two NOT TO MISS gatherings, “Holi-GAYS” and “Summer-GAYS”, two events that bring hundreds in for amazing food, wine tastings and of course…glasses of bubbly! But if by some chance wine or the signature beer is not your style, you can always get an amazing top shelf cocktail stirred to perfection and properly chilled. My recommendation is the “Manhattan” and let me tell you, it’s made with love!

I recently had the opportunity to dine with Peter and sample the newly engineered summer menu by Executive Chef Ally Rael. I’m not quite sure how to put this but I had assumed that because of the relatively small size of the space the menu would be limited to a few items that exist only to compliment the wine. I have never been more wrong or pleasantly surprised. First of all, Ally is a creative and vibrant thinker when it comes to the dishes that she prepares. Working out of a kitchen that is smaller than most people’s pantries, she creates plates that will make bigger restaurants feel like fast food. Organic, simple, elegant, plated beautifully and served with a style that has become famous to POCO. Although everything was amazing there were three things that stood out for me. These items were inspired and unusual, a truly unique experience found only at POCO. The first adventure was the Chicken Liver Pate. I know---- pate is not for everyone and normally not even for me, but there was something special about this recipe. It was delicate and flavorful, full of life with a subtle bite that kept me coming back for more! The second dish was the Candied Salmon Buccatini, frankly, this was beyond expectation, full of flavor and served beautifully with a crisp white wine that has become one of my favorites. We sampled many items that evening, but we finished with the Dark Chocolate Mousse, not for calorie conscious but certainly for the chocolate lover.

As we wrapped up the evening we began to discuss how POCO got started, where it has been and where it’s going. They have assembled an amazing team of people that work at POCO, professional, stylish and fun with an uncanny ability to remember your name as easily as your favorite glass of wine. Peter and Bart are not only business partners but partners in life and their collaborative styles sparkle together. They sponsor far too many events, groups, sports teams and non-profits to mention but it seems that they are never too busy to volunteer or help out. In 2009 they were named the GSBA New Business of the Year and have been the GSBA Champagne Sponsor for the last 3 years…fitting I think. You really can’t come to Seattle without a stop at POCO.

If Seattle is the Emerald city, then the Seattle Sheraton is clearly the jewel in the crown!

I had been to the Sheraton many times before my first actual overnight stay, attending meetings, retreats and large gala’s but I was completely unprepared for the pampering that I received on a recent “stay-cation” that I treated myself and my guy Javier to. Over and over people say that large hotels often miss opportunities to acknowledge the individual, that because of their size details are overlooked and sometimes folks get lost in the numbers. I can tell you that this hotel has no such problem, we felt like family from the moment we walked through the front door.

My first impression of the staff started with the valet service. I have said this many times before; a hotel has only one opportunity to make a first impression and the Sheraton team nailed it! The gentleman who greeted us as we pulled up into the amply staffed valet portico was right to task, smiling and warmly welcoming us to this grand and beautiful hotel. Check-in was seamless and in a flash we were off the room, welcomed as a gay couple without batting an eyelash…no pun intended. We walked into a beautiful corner suite with a view of the downtown core that was awesome. If this had been my first visit to Seattle I never would have left! The 20th floor gave us views of the city’s skyscraping buildings with the waters of the Puget Sound in the background shimmering and sparkling. I remember thinking that night with the curtains open and the lights twinkling how romantic this moment was. A perfect spot for my guy and I to spend some time together, just the two of us in the middle of this magnificent city. The beds, pillows and appointments were wonderful as were the toiletries and comfy towels and robes.

The hotel itself is practically a small city within itself with floors of meeting and event space, café’s, gym, restaurant and a wonderful lounge, in fact---I had one of the best Manhattans I’ve ever had….okay, maybe not just one. After a brief stay at the “happy hour” we ventured into the city which is literally right out the front door. We shopped, sipped and strolled through the downtown streets, enjoying the musicians, vendors and the very unique urban groove that is heartbeat of Seattle. Once back at the hotel the lounge beckoned for some late nasche and a night cap. I had a wonderful Washington wine, Javier a cocktail---the place was alive and magic…there were at least 3 other gay couples sitting close by and having a marvelous time.

Saturday arrived and we were off to the gym for a morning workout and run. Situated on the top floor, it seemed that the pool, spa and gym had the best view of all. A spectacular space with all the modern equipment, one of the best hotel workout centers I’ve enjoyed. We took a dip in the spa and headed to the room for showers and then onto the Club Lounge for coffee and breakfast. We sat by the window and met a very eclectic group of fellow guests. It was a perfect start to the day! We explored the city, coming back to home-base for a rest and then venturing out again. The shear convenience of this hotel was almost too perfect as we were literally in the center of the city.

Sunday brought a slow start and a leisurely “hang-out” in the room with a movie and room service. There may have been a mimosa or two as well. With a short walk to the Pike Place Market and back we wrapped up our stay and headed out. I learned later that there was much to this hotel that we didn’t even know until after we had left. Such as the fact that in 1993 the Sheraton started one of the first Green hotel initiatives by mandating that each department recycle materials and the hotel implemented a composting program, one of the first in the city. They have also recently completed a promenade beautification project on the back side of the hotel to visually enhance the neighborhood and encourage foot traffic. In addition, the Seattle Sheraton has taken a leadership role in working with the LGBT Community. They have hosted many events over the years that support equality, the non-profit community and organizations dedicated to education and HIV research. They are a wonderful Tourism Sponsor for the GSBA and work diligently to make sure that everyone who walks through their doors are welcomed and treated with respect and dignity. Our stay here was one that begs for a repeat visit and I’m counting the days!

Evergreen Escapes "Brews & Views"

Eco-travel is a booming sector of the tourism industry and I had the great pleasure of experiencing one of the premier eco-adventure tour companies this past weekend, EverGreen Escapes. Operating in the up and coming neighborhood of Georgetown, EverGreen Escapes offers a wide variety of escapes and adventure tours. The escapes range from regional bird watching tours, Mount Rainer day trips and international adventures in Australia, New Zealand and the Galapagos Islands. For my adventure I decided to pick the new “Brews & Views” tour.

The “Brews & Views” tour exposes guests to the booming brewery business in Seattle and lets them sample the very product that is putting Seattle on the map as the place to go to have good pint of beer. Before taking this tour I have to admit that I completely underestimated the complexity of the process of brewing beer . It isn’t so much of a process as it is a science, just as much as making wine. Move over frat boys I think beer is about to become the refined mans drink of choice.

The tour incorporates brewery stops and visits to different vantage points to give visitors a number of different views of the city. This is a wonderful tour to take for first time visitors to Seattle and long time Seattleites looking to do some urban exploration. It’s amazing how I keep discovering new vantage points that give me a fresh sense of excitement as if I’m gazing upon the city for the first time.

Arriving at the EverGreen Escapes office I was greeted by Mira Poling, the tour guide or “escape artist” as noted on her business card, for my afternoon adventure into the world of beer. She was absolutely delightful and had a wealth of knowledge to share about the city and her love for beer. Mira is a photographer by trade and also leads an adventure photography class with EverGreen Escapes in Pioneer Square.

The tour vehicle for the afternoon was a beautiful white Mercedes with leather seating, and the best part was that it runs on biodiesel! EverGreen Escapes is committed to being as sustainable as possible in their tours and daily operations. The Mercedes was the perfect vehicle to spend the afternoon cruising around the city taking in the sights and drinking copious amounts of beer.

Along for the ride that afternoon was two couples, one couple recently landed in Seattle from Virginia and the other was a local couple celebrating a birthday. At first Mira did most of the talking but after the first visit to a brewery and our first sips of beer everyone’s personalities started to come out. By the end of the day we were all laughing and exchanging emails so we could keep in contact. It was a nice bonding experience to have with a group of complete strangers. I think EverGreen Escapes made the right choice in having their tour groups be small so the group could connect, something that is difficult to do on a large tour bus.

On the tour we visited three breweries; Elliot Bay Brewing Company, Georgetown Brewing Company and the Fremont Brewing Company. Each brewery was in a different neighborhood which gave me a chance to explore three different unique areas of Seattle. I love how each neighborhood in Seattle has a distinct personality and vibe to it.

The first stop for the afternoon was the Elliot Bay Brewing Company in West Seattle. Elliot Bay Brewing Company provides an in-depth “Beer Bible” which details the different variety of hops used for the different types of beer brewed. Along with the beer sampler we were also treated to the world’s largest pretzel. This baby was huge and was big enough to feed 6 people in their mid twenties who had been drinking beer.

The Georgetown Brewing Company was the largest brewery on our stop. Little did I know walking through the giant sliding doors of the brewery that this was where Manny’s Pale Ale was brewed, which is one of my favorite beers of all time. The idea of it passing over my taste buds sends my mind racing through a kaleidoscope of images from last summer. It's so refreshing and so very delicious.

Before going on the “Brews & Views” tour I had little to no real knowledge about beer but after I actually feel like I could participate in a conversation about it. I’m sure my straight guy friends will be really impressed when I explain what makes a lager different from a stout.

The “Brews & Views” tour would be a great treat for the avid beer drinker or those looking to see Seattle from all of its famous vantage points. The tour takes place each Friday, Saturday and Sunday and usually lasts 5 hours. It’s the perfect way to spend an afternoon in our beautiful city of Seattle.

I recently treated myself and my guests to night out on the town and Amy’s Limo Service made the evening one to remember. I have known Amy for many years and I can tell you from experience that there is no one else in the business like Amy and her amazing team of drivers. A woman owned business that provides transportation services from the very elegant, to airport town car, to exciting nights out and all things in between, no one does it better than Amy and her team!

Our evening began right on time, actually, our driver was early and waiting for us…his broad grin, exceptional service and directional skills kept us right on track and well entertained. It can’t be easy to navigate a 25 foot beast of a limo through the narrow hills and neighborhoods of Seattle, but he managed with ease and provided a wonderful sunset experience while we effortlessly sipped champagne in the back.

There is a certain calmness that is added to an evening out when you know that you are not the one having to do the transportation work…a treat that is well worth it! As we maneuvered our way through the evening our driver continued to impress with his willingness to stop at a number of unscheduled destinations, such as the iconic “Fremont Troll” under the Aurora Bridge, if you are a visitor, this is a “Must-See” while you are here! We found ourselves wishing the evening wouldn’t end. The best part of using a service like this is that compared to the cost of fuel, parking or valet and time spent looking for that elusive parking spot, having Amy or a member of her team do the driving is very affordable. But that’s not where the story end’s, it’s really just where it just begins.

Amy offers a wide variety of services including wine tasting vehicles, stretch Hummers, airport town car services, party vans and the list goes on. But even beyond the business that Amy runs and the services that she can provide, she has been a great ally to the LGBTQ community giving of her time, donating services to auctions and supporting causes that are at heart of who she is. Although I do not know if you would be lucky enough to actually get Amy behind the wheel of your vehicle (which does happen from time to time) but know that you will be safe and in good hands for your visit to our city.

Fairfield Inn by Marriot: Affordable Luxury Fit For a King but in This Case a "Queen"

Tucked away in a quite corner of BELLEVUE near the Microsoft Corporation campus is the BELLEVUE/REDMOND Fairfield Inn by Marriott. As a new Seattle resident, this was my first time venturing to Redmond from my humble abode on Capital Hill so I was delighted to stay at a hotel that was as warm and welcoming as the Fairfield Inn.

The staff was absolutely amazing on my arrival. In this day and age where bad customer service runs rampant it’s always nice to be reminded exactly what good customer service is. The front desk agent gave me a genuine warm welcome and offered me coffee and reminded me that there would be free freshly baked cookies available later in the evening. I’m a sucker for a cookie, especially when they are free.

I was pleasantly surprised by the number of amenities available for guests like a store in the lobby stocked with any toiletry you may have forgotten, a warm indoor poor which instantly made me forget it was winter and b, a massage therapist, a workout room with an extensive assortment of equipment and a large dining room where breakfast is served.

For my stay I had the pleasure of staying in the largest room available. The room was larger then my first college apartment and I was pleased to discover a freshly stocked candy dish on the coffee table. The room was nicely appointed with attractive art and comfortable furniture. I rather enjoyed the color scheme of the room, beige with red accents. The room was so comfortable I almost felt like I was staying over at a friend’s home.

The bed was fit for a king, well in this case a “queen.” The bed is the most important feature in a hotel room and I’m happy to report that the bed exceeded my expectations. Something I always marveled at was how cool to the touch the linens were every time I slid into bed, the true sign of quality. I’ve experienced a variety of uncomfortable hotel beds throughout the years but this one had the right degree firmness and the right number of pillows, two for my noggin and one to cuddle with.

I have to focus on the bathroom because it had one of the most amazing jetted tubs that I have ever had the pleasure of bathing in. The sheer size of the tub surprised me as it was big enough for me and at least 3 friends, not that I bathe with my friends or anything. I spent at least an hour bobbing around in the full tub like a dumpling in boiling chicken broth.

After a restful evening I woke up to discover Schevonne, the Fairfield Inn’s massage therapist, at my door. It was to be my first official massage and the anticipation had me buzzing. Schevonne was an absolute delight to talk with and I must admit had hands blessed by god. Laying face down on the massage table I wondered how much I would have to pay Schevonne to come be my in-house, or in-apartment, massage therapist.

The hotel is just a short drive away from the premier downtown Bellevue shops and restaurants and is right around the corner from the Redmond town center. The Redmond town center boasts a variety of restaurants and shops and I had a lot of fun exploring the new area. There isn’t a short supply of things to see, do or experience around the hotel.

I absolutely enjoyed my time at the Fairfield Inn by Marriot in Redmond. The entire experience from the staff, the amenities, the room, the huge family sized tub and Schevonne was absolutely fabulous. A big thank you is in order for Carlos Roberto Castillo, the Fairfield Inn Director of Sales, who has been very active within the Greater Seattle Business Association since becoming a member.

PLAY THERE: THE JUPITER HOTEL ~ THE EPICENTER OF PORTLAND COOL

Cool thing Number One: It looks like an old motor inn, because it once was. That was in 1964, when motor inns were in fact the coolest thing going, but for different reasons. Then it got way seedy: Drugs, hookers, jaywalkers and other assorted riff-raff. It was resurrected in 2002 when proprietors Kelsey Bunker and Tod Breslau bought the property, hosed out the creepy elements and transformed it into its present hip self.

Cool thing Number Two: The complimentary chocolate on your pillow has been replaced by a complimentary condom. They come in a rainbow of colors and are packaged with the Jupiter logo. Use it or lose it. An ounce of prevention. Is that a gun in your pocket or are you just happy to see me? “The owners really wanted to create a place where the community could come together and people could have fun,” says Al Munguia, the General Manager who oversees this bastion of high trendworthiness. The Jupiter’s 80 guest rooms, he points out, have either a wall of cool, hand-painted bamboo plants from floor to ceiling, or an awesome mural. One design features a large, golden Buddha on the wall; another has Marilyn Monroe; a third features a cool nature scene, like Monument Valley. The guestrooms have all undergone recent renovation, with flat-screen televisions and iPod docks added to new headboards to go with the cool, low, minimalist platform beds. There are green shag pillows and enormous mirrors, and the chalkboard doors will always remain (“This space taken”; “I’m a Virgo, what are you?”; “Warning: I Brake for Doughnuts”) The Jupiter was at the forefront of the renaissance of its neighborhood, just across the river from downtown Portland on East Burnside Avenue. Once a place where you could practically cut the urban grime with a knife, LoBu, or Lower Burnside, is now a very cool place to hang your hat. Restaurants like the fabulous, French Le Pigeon and the wine-mecca Noble Rot are right around the corner from the hotel, and Doug Fir, the very cool coffeeshop and nightclub, with peeled log décor that would make Abraham Lincoln proud, anchors the nightlife scene. Touring acts the world over play the Doug Fir, and on weekends especially the club draws a lively, young crowd straight to the Jupiter’s parking lot. They hang out in the very cool concrete courtyard, covered by a white tent in the winter, with its white lounge furniture, free WiFi and stage. The Jackalope Tattoo Studio keeps late hours for the occasional impulse purchase, and the Wack Hair Salon works its magic on Portland heads. A fire pit makes for a lively party scene into the late hours, and the Dream Box is a meeting room with a built-in projector, bamboo floor and enormous chalkboard for brainstorming only the best ideas.

Cool thing Number Three: It just may be the only hotel in the world whose logo wear, available for purchase, includes beanies and thongs.

Cool thing Number Four: After midnight, any unsold rooms are made available for a flat rate of $59, excellent for those who don’t aspire to make the DUI roles, and the better to get to know you, my dear.

Seattle to Host First Ever West Coast LGBT Tourism Summit

SEATTLE – Dec. 20, 2010 – Following the success of the Greater Seattle Business Association’s Travel Gay Seattle initiative, Seattle will host LGBT Chambers of Commerce, convention and visitor bureaus, travel planners and chamber businesses at the first West Coast LGBT Tourism Summit, January 6-8.

Glenn Johnson, President of Horizon Airlines, will deliver the keynote speech and experts from leading market research, public relations and social media firms such as Nyhus Communications, Community Marketing, Inc. and Pink Banana Media will host sessions on developing a successful inbound tourism initiative.

The 2011 West Coast LGBT Tourism Summit will focus on providing tools for attendees to attract LGBT tourism to their city. By following GSBA’s lead of forming partnerships with private and public organizations, local travel organizations can bolster the LGBT tourism industry in their area. Sessions at the summit include a city by city status report delivered by each participating chamber or region, information on how to develop a local LGBT visitors guide, utilize technology, and how to market and brand a city or region. Event sponsors include Alaska Airlines, Boeing, USBank and the Seattle Renaissance Hotel.

GSBA’s travel portal, Travel Gay Seattle, allows travelers to book their plane or train tickets and hotel stay, as well as find restaurants, shopping, and unique neighborhoods. By developing similar initiatives on the west coast, tourism professionals hope to create a regional community for LGBT travelers.

“LGBT Tourism is an essential component of the West Coast economy. Some of the top gay and lesbian popular destinations in the world are located in western North America drawing hundreds of thousands of LGBT travelers from around the world every year,” said David Paisley Community Marketing Inc. “In addition LGBT events such as Pride are often the biggest public events in their communities, and attract participants far and wide.”

To launch Travel Gay Seattle, GSBA partnered with Seattle-based Alaska Airlines, a company with a reputation for flexibility and outstanding service, as well as an established reputation for LGBT-friendly travel. Additional support came from the City of Seattle’s Office of Economic Development and Sound Transit, a regional network of commuter rail, light rail, express buses, and local transit resources. Corporate sponsors include Sheraton Seattle Hotel, Amtrak and American Airlines.

The day was clear, bright and sunny with a late summer breeze bringing fresh sea air up from Elliott Bay to the front door of the new Marriott Courtyard Pioneer Square. This beautifully renovated and majestic 1900’s building greeted my arrival with classic style and a big city flair. The valet was the first person I met, his broad grin and handshake were both out of the ordinary and welcoming, in fact it made my first impression of the hotel a true 10. So many hotels do not realize that you only get one chance to make a first impression, that your front line team members can color an entire stay just by one simple act, and in this case, the handshake made the day.

This Courtyard is the newest in the Seattle Marriott family. A renovated grand old building, this Marriott is truly a unique blend of historic restoration and modern sensibility. A month earlier I had gotten a sneak peek during a hard-hat tour and even amidst the dust and construction I was impressed with the detailed attention paid to restoring the original beauty of the interiors. Even through the major renovation this landmarked building retained its significant architectural features such as the marble entryway, classic crown molding and striking style you can’t find anywhere else. You can even see the old air-driven mail system in the lobby, although it no longer works it is flashback to a simpler time in design and function.

With the remodel finished and the hotel newly opened, I was delighted to be checking in. The lobby is truly something to behold, island style check-in, modern furnishings and a truly unique approach to Courtyard design--where the groove is subtle and the space speaks for itself. The building, guest rooms and colors were only highlights; the true story was anchored in the staff. General Manager Gerry Lamontagne has assembled an extraordinary team that makes any visitor feel like they are coming home rather than checking in. This particular weekend was a bit of a family reunion with my mother, sister, a young niece and a nephew, we weren’t exactly packing lightly. In true kid-induced chaotic fashion we burst through the doors taking the place by storm, where we were immediately met with a Courtyard team that went out of their way to make us feel as though we were only people in the place. From valet to front desk to housekeeping and the café, this group of people truly made our stay the highlight of the trip. I hope the rest of the Courtyards can take note, these folks have set a new standard for Courtyard operation.

The rooms of this hotel are bright, open and each with a unique floor plan, tall ceilings and grand appointments. My niece and nephew especially liked the spacious indoor pool and health center, my mother, sister and I especially liked the glass of wine in the lounge. When you travel with kids, one seemed to go with the other.

Having the opportunity to work with most of the Marriott’s in the Seattle area I can tell you that their commitment to diversity and LGBT inclusion is extraordinary. We currently have 10 Marriott Hotels throughout our region as Travel Gay Seattle members and each has made a commitment to welcome and honor our community. Working with Regional Marketing Manager Josh Bang has been a delight, he ensures that each of his properties are welcoming to not only his guests but to his LGBT employees as well. Argosy Dinner Cruise: Discover the silent beautiful magic of Seattle!

Argosy Cruises is a Seattle staple just like the iconic image of the Space Needle, the historic Pike Place Market and drinking copious amount of coffee. Being new to the city, I was excited to experience everything Seattle had to offer and an Argosy dinner cruise was high on my list of things to do.

Argosy has a large fleet of ships and for my dinner cruise I boarded the largest ship in the Argosy fleet, the Royal Argosy. The name "royal" was fitting because I experienced a sense of grandeur when I first stepped on board. I was impressed with the inside of the ship. I particularly enjoyed the crescent shaped banquet booth that I was seated at for dinner. The lighting could have been a bit more intimate to match the setting, but this was a room built for style and grace.

Looking around, I was happy to see couples of varying ages and demographics. While I didn't spot a same-sex couples, I was told that Argosy is very popular with the LGBT community. Argosy actually provides a boat for an annual fundraising event that supports Seattle Pride and hosts the GSBA new member cruise each April.

My dinner guests for the night were Peter Robinson and Michele Hanson of Argosy Cruises. "If you're going to see Seattle Joshua you need to see it from the sea," Michele expressed as she gestured towards the glowing skyline of downtown Seattle. "Here at Argosy we are selling a first class dining experience but what we are really selling is Seattle," said Peter. There is something remarkable about the Seattle skyline from the water.

The dining room was alive with music provided by Argosy's house band Mary & The Rave. To start the evening, I ordered a glass of champagne. It seemed fitting since I was dressed to impress and I wanted to have something a bit classier then a rum and coke. As I sipped my champagne and listened to the music, I almost felt I was in some swanky jazz club. The Royal's main dining room has a full bar and a fantastic wine list to meet the needs of even the most discerning spirit lover.

The first course of the evening was a three-tiered appetizer platter. I wasn't sure what was more pleasing to the eye, the appetizer or Zak, our server. The appetizer covered each of the "fabulous" food groups, seafood, cheese and fruit, everything a classy champagne drinking gay man could need. On the first tier of the platter were pretzel crusted crab cakes which were a true delight and were possibly the best I've ever had. The lower tiers consisted of an assortment of different fruits and cheeses which paired wonderfully together.

Following an amazing bowl of Dungeness crab and corn chowder, the main course arrived. I was happy to see favorite server Zak bringing my dinner. My eyes grew wide as the plate of halibut was dropped off -- the smell of the cooked fish was stunning. I couldn't believe how tender the halibut was! I was more then happy to clean the entire plate and was almost tempted to lick up the last remaining bits.

After dinner I was faced with the hardest decision of the evening: to dessert or not to dessert? The New York cheesecake with raspberry sauce proved to be too tempting and ultimately was my choice. The raspberry sauce tasted as if it had just been made prior to the cheesecake being brought out and it was the right balance of sweet and tart. It was a fabulous garnish for the cheesecake and it all blended wonderfully with the champagne. Once again I posed the question, what doesn't taste good with champagne?

After watching the Seattle skyline from inside the dining room, I thought the best way to finish the evening would be a stroll across the deck. The bow was full of people admiring the glowing Seattle skyline, people taking photos to mark their dinner cruise experience and couples embracing. There was a slight breeze that evening blowing across Elliot Bay and aside from the low hum of the boat engine, there was silence. It was interesting to be able to see, but not hear the busy streets of downtown. It was a beautifully quiet moment and definitely one that I would like to share with a special someone.

Seattle is a city that demands to be seen from the water and Argosy provides the perfect excursion and opportunity. I would even go as far to say that that you haven't truly seen the city until you have seen it from Elliot Bay. As I stood on the bow of the Royal Argosy ship I couldn't help but think back to what Peter had said earlier, "We sell the city, we sell Seattle." Watching the glowing skyline grow larger as the boat started its trek back to port I couldn't help but feel completely sold on this beautiful city. The Lobby Bar: Check Into One of Seattle's Best

The sign for The Lobby Bar, illuminated in a neon green light, instantly grabbed my attention and pulled me across the busy intersection of Pike and Broadway like a moth caught on it's final flight towards a bug zapper. Unlike the moths final experience I'm happy to report that my experience was defiantly buzz worthy.

At The Lobby Bar I found it incredibly easy to approach and strike up a conversation with people around the lounge. This was a refreshing experience to have in a gay bar because other times it has felt like I wasn't only approaching one person but their entire group of friends who would be circling around them like winged monkeys. In fact I was surprised to actually have multiple people come up and start conversations with me.

Walking into the lounge I was quickly greeted by a friendly bartender named Dave who offered me one of The Lobby's newest signature drinks, the 23 oz Lobby Long Island. Thankfully it was Long Island Thursday because the drink was only $6.00! How could I say no to a drink of that size, quality and price? I could get two Lobby Long Islands for the price of a smaller drink at another bar and still have enough cash left over to sample one of the items from the food menu.

The patrons of The Lobby Bar that night covered almost every demographic present on Capitol Hill. From gays, lesbians, straight couples and Seattle hipsters, the crowd was defiantly mixed but yet delightfully gay. I enjoy going into mixed bars, the atmosphere is usually more relaxed and less intense then when you get an entire lounge full of gay men or women.

The Lobby Bar is the official viewing party for Ru Paul's Drag Race and will be having its grand kick off in January when the new season kicks off. I was happy to find out that I could still get my weekly drag dose on Wednesday nights at 8:30 pm when The Lobby Bar hosts an outrageous version of the classic game show Family Feud.

The Lobby Bar is the perfect place to meet people, connect with friends or enjoy one of The Lobby Bar's premium cocktails. The Lobby Bar is the newest LGBT lounge and defiantly one of the best.

The Inn At The Market, As In As It Gets

My stay at the Inn began on a sunny summer afternoon with the sun sparkling off the waters of Elliott Bay and The Pike Place Market alive with activity. The valet parking and intimate courtyard entrance immediately sent me into vacation mode, I was ready to play. The lobby was furnished beautifully with an amazing collection of artwork. The woman that checked me in had a wonderful sense of humor and minutes after I arrived I was checked-in and ready to go. Although my room wasn’t immediately available I was shown to a smaller room to freshen up and then on to the roof top patio to soak up the sun. I also took this opportunity to snoop and I found out that this little hotel in the middle of the city isn’t so little.

I discovered that the guest rooms range from intimate to 2-story spacious. There are two meeting/event rooms that are capable of hosting up to 50 guests and a wonderful array of amenities such as free wifi throughout the hotel, fluffy bathrobes in every room and Gilchrist & Soames toiletries—it’s all about the little luxuries here. The most extraordinary feature is the rooftop deck with a 180-degree view of Elliott Bay, the Olympic mountain range and the city skyline. My room was lovingly appointed with windows that seemed to flood light in from all directions. The whole place screamed, “relax."

The staff at the Inn was among the best and most experienced that I have encountered. That evening I hosted 10 close friends for champagne on the patio; the Inn at the Market team went out of their way to ensure that all our needs were met. I’m already planning my next gathering there.

There is certain magic about this hotel, the location and the ambience--the sheer combination of simple elegance and ease of stay. If you go (and you should), you will not want to leave.

Chill Out With a Northwest Rafting Adventure

As I’ve come learn from living here in Seattle the past few years, this is one of those special places that offers myriad appealing and accessible outdoor activities. As an avid outdoorsman, it’s one of things I treasure about the Emerald City.

Gay Pride Seattle 2010 Makes History

Seattle Gay Pride 2010 had many firsts, starting with an historic, symbolic and highly visible surprise. Almost like out of a movie script, the celebration commenced ceremoniously Friday afternoon with city officials and representatives of the GSBA raising the rainbow flag 605-feet in the air atop the iconic Space Needle. With our colors waiving high in the Seattle sky, the party was set to begin!

The huge flag, which was visible from almost everywhere revelers traveled throughout the weekend, served as the apropos backdrop for Seattle's first pride after the groundbreaking approval last fall of Washington's Referendum 71 domestic partnership law.

The celebration, one of the largest in the country, went off without a hitch with myriad activities all over the Emerald City -- from parades and street parties (Purr's block party was off the hook) to eclectic entertainment (singer Kimberly Locke, Raven from "RuPaul's Drag Race" television show) and fundraising events for worthy LGBT causes. The inaugural and rather comical Prom Dress Rugby game benefitted the Lambert House, a home for LGBT Youth, while Seattle Pride hosted a child friendly picnic earlier in the week.

I've personally attended many pride celebrations in various cities and in my opinion Seattle is one of the best. It's safe, big but not too big and all of the fun is within walking distance. I was able to explore different party places without stepping foot in a car (which allowed me to really enjoy the festivities!).

After all the fun and revelry I found myself resting comfortably in my boyfriend's downtown apartment at an early 9 p.m. As my friends, who I left dancing the night away, will attest, that's a first for me.

Seattle Gay Pride Starts With Historic Flag Raising

Yesterday officials from the Greater Seattle Business Association joined state and city officials to make history, hoisting the rainbow flag high atop Seattle's landmark Space Needle for the first time ever. The flag will stand as a beacon of the city's support of the LGBT community throughout the Gay Pride Celebration.

As I sit on the patio of my boyfriend's 15th floor downtown apartment which looks west with a bird's eye view of the city and the Needle, a tremendous sense of pride in our progressive city overcomes me. Welcome to all who have come to our city to celebrate with us. We stand together!

Barrio Restaurant: Modern Mexican on Seattle's Capitol Hill

A couple of friends recently asked me to join them for dinner at Barrio, a new Mexican restaurant on Seattle's Capitol Hill (aka "gayborhood"). When they said Mexican, I was expecting sombreros, a lot of green and red, and a menu where they take the same ingredients, cook it in different ways and call it different names. I was pleasantly surprised!

Barrio blends Old World and modern elements to create a rich atmosphere in very subdued lighting. When I opened the menu, the first thing I saw was tacos and enchiladas and I thought, "Yep. Regular Mexican food." I read on and was immediately drawn to the smoky shredded pork tacos with golden raisins, almonds, caramelized onion-poblano rajas, jack cheese and guajillo pepper-tomato sauce. And I could order it in the “cazuelas” mode where the ingredients are put on a platter and you build your own tacos with warm homemade corn tortillas.
There was even a vegetarian option for my friend, Mona -- enchiladas with roasted asparagus, jack, Oaxaca and manchego cheeses, tomatillo sauce and cilantro. We also tried their goat cheese and asparagus salad, which had large chunks of oh-so-tasty bacon, corn, red, onion and grape tomatoes.

While we were waiting for our dinner, I asked for the obligatory chips, salsa and guacamole -- it turned out to be the best salsa I’ve ever tasted. The salsas are homemade and the one I tried was a fire-roasted tomato and habanero pepper concoction that had me asking for three refills. The guacamole was also homemade, with tasty chunks of avocado. Dinner was, in my other friend Louise’s words, “Absolutely amazing." The entrees were exquisitely prepared and the flavors of each dish were fantastic. I don’t want to pigeon-hole their cuisine as Mexican. It’s Latin food taken to a whole new level.

I almost never order dessert in a traditional Mexican restaurant but the dessert menu was too tempting. We had homemade churros that we dipped in warm Xocalatl chocolate and homemade smoked salt caramels. Barrio’s desserts, just like the rest of its food, are out of this world.
