Hello again, Internet. It's been a while — but not for lack of stories.

I haven't stopped traveling.

I just stopped writing.

At some point over the past few years, I chose to be more present... to travel without thinking of deliverables, captions, deadlines, or blog post outlines. I wanted to soak in the experience, not package it.

And when you're navigating life, shifting focus, and occasionally drowning in a never-ending to-do list… blogging, unfortunately, takes the back seat.

At some point, sponsored posts started to blur the line between passion and pressure. The blog began to feel more like a chore than a creative outlet. So I paused. I rested. I focused on other ventures. I tried to figure out this thing called midlife. 😅

But here we are.

I miss telling stories. I miss documenting trips for future me — to reread and relive. I kind of miss this space.

So this is me reintroducing myself to the blog. Not with a grand plan or content calendar (not yet, anyway), but with a simple desire to write and remember. To turn Travel Jams into what it’s always meant to be: a journal, a memory bank, and maybe down the road, a gentle stream of income again.

Let’s see where this goes. 💛

Is it worth it to start blogging in 2023?

I have a love-hate relationship with my blogs (both this and my lifestyle blog, LovetteJam.com and now my personal finance blog, TitaRaketera.com). If you check my blog post archive here, you will see that there are times when I would publish a post once a week; there are times when it's once a month; and in 2020, I only published one post for an entire year!😳 Yikes!

It's no question that maintaining a blog takes quality content, consistency, and strategy to succeed. It takes commitment. You have to invest money, time, and a lot of effort to see some profit. Yes, you read that right. There's money involved to keep this blog running. There are domain and hosting costs, for starters, not to mention the expenses associated with the computer, cameras, and software needed to produce quality content that educates, entertains, and/or inspires whoever stumbles into this tiny space in the interwebs.

Of course, there's the option to let this blog die, especially in this age of social media and the rise of "social media influencers". Anyone can use any platform to deliver a message. There's Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, and even podcasting tools available out there... mostly free.

So the question is:

Is it worth it to start blogging in 2023?

For the purposes of this blog post, however, let's focus on reason #4: to earn. Because let's face it, we won't invest our time, energy, and money if we don't see any potential return in the future.

If you're considering starting your own blog as an additional income stream, chances are you may have come across tons of articles that claim to earn a decent income through blogging, allowing content creators to live off earnings through the blog.

How to Make Money with a Travel Blog

What started out as a hobby turned out to be an additional income stream for me. Here are some ways I earned through this blog:

1. Blog as a portfolio for freelancing

When I started blogging in the early 2000s, I wrote about random stuff. Niching wasn't a thing back then. It was just my online journal. I posted poems, jokes, rants, stories, etc. It was in 2011 when I started to meet other bloggers and thought about taking it a little seriously. I started Travel Jams to focus on travel-related content, and I also organized my other personal blog to showcase my other skills.

I was a couple of years into freelancing then, working as a medical transcriber. I wanted to transition into writing and social media-related work. So I used my blog posts as writing samples for potential clients and used my own website and social media pages to practice WordPress, SEO, Google analytics, social media marketing, and other skills I needed to learn to transition from medical transcription to social media marketing. I used my own site and social media accounts as work samples when I started, and then built my portfolio as I had paying clients later on.

2. Press trips and campaigns

This is by far my favorite way to earn through content creation!

This may be the most fun way to earn as I get to travel AND get paid (with cash and/or ex-deal arrangements), but it's also admittedly the most labor-intensive. Whether it's invitational or a deal made through pitching, bloggers need to negotiate deliverables and set expectations for the content to be produced. Then during the travel stage, which can be anywhere from 2 to 7 days, we make sure to capture whatever is on the list of deliverables -- photos, videos, stories, social media posts, etc.

Over the years of maintaining this blog and working with fellow bloggers in my network, I was able to travel to Palawan, Surigao, Hong Kong, and many others without spending a lot of money. Brand partnerships with airlines, hotels, and tourism offices made this possible. With some blogger friends, we were also able to organize #TravelMindanao, an advocacy campaign to show the world the best of Mindanao and to capture the attention of potential tourists through the use of social media by spending 30 days on the road to cover 8 provinces in Mindanao.

3. Sponsored posts and brand collaborations

As I have been grounded when the pandemic happened, a chunk of my blogging income is through sponsored posts (advertorials) and brand collaborations.

With research showing that influencer marketing is here to stay, bloggers need to step up their games to catch the attention of brands they want to work with. Whatever your niche is, there are opportunities to earn through sponsored posts. You don't need a gazillion followers to start earning. 😉

A word of caution though: If done poorly, sponsored posts tend to turn off readers. Audiences don't want to be sold to. That's why I follow seasoned influencers' advice to be very careful with choosing brands that I work with. I only accept offers if it comes from a brand I know and love, and is aligned with what my readers would be interested to know. Remember to provide value.

4. Through ads placements and affiliate marketing

To be honest, when I started blogging, I felt icky thinking about placing ads and affiliate links on my blog as an income stream. Eventually, I learned to embrace this. I just make sure to stick to my simple rule: I only work with brands that I use and like. For affiliate marketing, for example, I will only provide links for products that I actually bought. I worked so hard to build my personal brand, I wouldn't want to tarnish my reputation by lying just so I could make money.

5. Speaking engagements and consulting

As I started to build my online presence, I never imagined that I'd get to a point where I get invited to speak at events. Through years of experience, I have been able to talk about blogging, freelancing, social media, and influencer marketing. I have also worked with local and international clients as a consultant on their digital marketing strategies.

There are still a lot of ways to earn through blogging. So to answer the question at the beginning of this post, it's a big YES. It is still worth it to start blogging in 2023.

I am grateful for how this passion turned out for me. That's why I am sharing my journey as a content creator here. I may not have millions of readers and followers, but I have found ways to monetize my online presence.

You may find yourself asking the question, “Should I rent or buy a house?”

Renting is a great option if you’re looking for something temporary. You often hear about renting from the perspective of the tenant – so here are some things you should know that your landlord doesn’t want you to know.

Things should be fixed before you sign your lease.

A walkthrough of your potential new home may have turned up some minor issues. Knowing you have a landlord provides a sense of security since they are the ones who will need to fix these issues.

You may be inclined to wait until you move in to have the landlord perform this upkeep, but you really should aim to get things fixed before you even sign your lease.

A crooked cabinet or door that sticks is not a huge cause for motivation on the part of your landlord after you’ve moved in. It’s more likely they will push off the repair since they’ve already got you locked into the living space.

I have always dreamed of studying abroad for a master's degree. As I'm looking for scholarship opportunities, I'm checking not only the program details but also the living expenses in the area. I would imagine that a considerably big portion of my budget would be for my housing needs. In this post, I'd like to share with you some tips for apartment hunting on a budget, just in case you're thinking of moving in the near future.

Finding the ideal apartment requires taking into account your budget, commute, personal preferences, and other needs. Let's go over the things you need to know about finding an apartment that fits your budget.

1. Establish a rental budget

Be realistic with your budget. Ideally, your monthly rent payment should be 20-30% of your expected income (or expected allowance, if you're going for a scholarship). This guideline will help you avoid paying more in rent than you can truly afford.

Websites like Zumper can give you a good idea of the running rates in an area. I've looked at Los Angeles, for example, and found that the average rent for a 1-bedroom apartment in Los Angeles, CA is currently $2,050, which is 2% less compared to the previous year.

Tip: Consider renting with a roommate. For example, the median rent for a 1-bedroom apartment in Los Angeles is $2,050 and $2,795 for a 2-bedroom apartment. Not to mention, you can save when splitting utility bills, furniture, and other housing expenses.

2. List your non-negotiables

Just because you're on a budget doesn't mean you have to sacrifice your quality of life. Take a moment to think about what you appreciate and what you can't tolerate.

Here are some things to consider:

Your commute time (should be near the university for students or place of work)
Whether it is smoking or non-smoking
Distance to the nearest subway or bus stop
If you want to live somewhere calm or busy
If you need a stove, oven, dishwasher, elevator or on-site laundry

3. Specify your ideal location

Start exploring the city's neighborhoods to see which ones would be the greatest match for you. Make sure to examine the location, mood, and activity level of the area you pick. These characteristics will have a significant impact on how much you appreciate your current living arrangement.

You don't want to be 45 minutes away from the next grocery shop, 30 minutes away from the nearest park, or unable to complete work due to the weekly neighborhood block party on the street below.

Tip: Consider living outside the city. Oftentimes, renting in the suburbs of a city rather than the city itself may sometimes result in lower rent prices without sacrificing proximity to the metropolis.

4. Look into middle-floor units

The cost of renting a unit on the lower or upper levels of a building is usually greater. This is due to the fact that people like beautiful views and want quick access to their homes.

You may save a lot of money if you're prepared to put up with a less-than-ideal view and use the stairs/elevator.

5. Work in exchange for an affordable apartment

Believe it or not, there is the option to live rent-free. There are a number of ways to accomplish this, one of which is going the home-sharing route and move into an intergenerational house and assist out in exchange for a place to stay. You can also get free housing as a student as a Resident Assistant.You may also try finding a job at a hotel, hostel, or dormitory in exchange for working at the property.

JAPAN | Hiroshima Travel Reflections (Hope After Horror)

One of my favorite (yet heartbreaking) travel vlogs to make was the one about Hiroshima. As this was towards the end of our 2-week Japan adventure, I opted to add in my personal thoughts and reflections about the lessons of Hiroshima. This was a different format from my previous travel videos, as I focused more on sharing how travel changed/affected me. [Note: Travel video at the end of this blog post.]

Our day trip to Hiroshima, as short as it was, left a tremendous impact on me as a person, community volunteer, and peace advocate.

The evocative exhibits at the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum strongly humanized the dark history of Hiroshima. It showed life in Hiroshima before the bombing and highlighted the pain and suffering of the victims.

The museum features a 3D graphic representation of the A-bombing that obliterated nearly everything within 10-square kilometers.

There were photos, documentary films, drawings by survivors, scientific explanations of the explosion, and artifacts such as melted glass and charred clothing hint at the unimaginable horrors that was Hiroshima.

Beyond the Museum

There are numerous other places to visit within the area to help us gain a deeper understanding of the suffering caused by war and appreciate the true value of peace.

Hope After Horror

As horrific as its history was, Hiroshima is also a story of hope.

Hiroshima may have put faces and feelings n the lives of those affected by the bombing and the human costs of war, but the city’s rebirth clearly demonstrates the hope that defines the best of our humanity.

Travel Reflections

As I came home to my beloved Mindanao, I now have a clearer picture of the effects of war. While what happened in my homeland was nowhere near the devastation of the atomic bombing in Hiroshima, the pain of affected families is as intense and long-lasting.

And as I sat comfortably on the train on our way home, I can only pray for all those lives lost in wars all over the world, and promise to do what I can to make peace possible.

5 Best Places to Hike in Whistler

Since the pandemic, I haven't been out and about as much as I wanted. I'm still daydreaming about travel. I've been thinking about Canada quite a lot, and I've been thinking about hiking. Hiking is the most flawless blend of getting physical activity while also doing something incredible for your mental health. Hiking boosts our natural serotonin levels, increases our appetite for adventure, and helps our immune systems get more substantial.

If this type of activity sounds like a dream: you're not alone! These trails are the top five places to enjoy Canada's beauty while getting some physical activity. Sharing this list (and virtual tours) with you as I patiently wait for my vaccine and the world to get a little better.

Train Wreck Trail

If you want to get out of the city but don't want to leave behind the exciting art and culture: Train Wreck Trail is the place to go! Littered throughout with train cars that have unique graffiti and art and lend an urban feeling to the area's natural beauty. More art and designs will have been added every time you visit, which means this trail is never the same twice. You'll want to take countless pictures, ensuring you're enjoying the beauty while you're there.

Ancient Cedars

This trail requires a commute from Whitler's city center, either by bike or bus, but there's no doubt that it's worth it. Walking within one of the oldest forests on earth is a quick way to feel small in time and space. The feeling of finding yourself while exploring this trail isn't rare, with many people saying it felt like it was a religious experience to walk this. Take the time and enjoy the views while you take this beautiful trail.

Lost Lake Loop

Although this trail does require you to shuttle or drive out, and the beginning of it is pure gravel walkways, all of this will be worth it when you see the incredible beauty of the area. Despite the rocky faces of the trail, the rest of it is smooth sailing as you walk around Lost Lake. This lake's clear and still waters look like a mirror as they reflect the endless blue sky. There's something so simple and perfect about this trail; it's a classic favorite.

Cheakamus Trail

This hike is more straightforward and better built for beginners who are still finding their feet and just started looking for real estate for sale in Whistler. You can graduate from the low incline and easy trekking to a more complicated path, but then you'd miss out on the perfect and straightforward beauty of the Cheakamus Trail. Locals say this is the best spot for beginners, but even seasoned pros still enjoy taking this trail.

Skywalk Trail

This trail is for experienced hikers only because of how dangerous and uneven the climb is and how much time they devote to the trip. But, luckily for anyone willing and worthy: the views on the way up this climb are breathtaking and beyond worth it. Enjoy endless views of the falls as you go, and take in the active wildlife as you climb deeper and deeper into the forests.

At the top of this trail, you can look down and see how perfectly blue and large the lake is at its base. This trail may be the hardest on the list, but most say the pay-off is worth it.

Huawei partners with DOT to showcase the beauty of Philippines worldwide

[Manila; May 14, 2021] HUAWEI has inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Department of Tourism (DOT) today to promote the Philippines' tourist destinations, arts and culture to its more than 600 million users around the world.

Attendees present at the signing ceremony were Department of Tourism Secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat, DOT Assistant Secretary Howie Uyking, Huawei Philippines Vice President Daniel Guo, and Huawei Hong Kong Service COO, Mr. Wang Zhihui.

The partnership aims to showcase the Philippines' world-class tourist spots, Filipino products, and tourism-related events to HUAWEI Themes users in over 170 countries and regions. Under the MoU, HUAWEI Themes users can explore the Philippines curation series now under the “Pinoy Favorites” category on the app homepage.

The DOT will be the photo contributor under this partnership to provide source images related to the Philippines’ arts and culture. Among others, the popular tourist destinations in the Philippines such as beaches, islands, heritage towns, and deep seas will be featured in the app. Moving forward, DOT will also offer domestic tourism vouchers for hotels, attractions, and tours to HUAWEI Themes users.

In her speech, DOT Secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat expressed her gratitude to Huawei for supporting the DOT's efforts in handling the pandemic's effect on the tourism industry by lending its wide reach of smartphone users.

"Our strategy for the safe and gradual reopening of tourism in the Philippines will be greatly supported by this digital content partnership as it will offer Huawei users anywhere in the world with glimpses of our country's beautiful destinations and allow them to customize their mobile devices with images of our tourism offerings," Romulo-Puyat said. The Tourism Secretary hopes that through this project, Huawei smartphone users will be inspired to visit the Philippines once the government resumes international travel.

Meanwhile, Huawei Philippines Vice President Daniel Guo emphasized that Huawei's collaboration with the DOT is in line with the "glocalization" approach of Huawei Philippines and Huawei Mobile Services (HMS). "Huawei has established an extensive cooperation with the government, local businesses, and communities, to continuously bring innovative digital services to consumers and create greater social values," he said.

"Through the collaboration, we will curate a series of Philippines-centric wallpapers and smartphone themes, including the scenic landscapes and tourist attractions of the Philippines, as well as creative themes created by local artists, photographers, cartoonists, and animators," Daniel Guo added.

The MoU will not only help promote beautiful places in the Philippines but will also open a door of opportunity for talented Filipinos. Mobile themes created by passionate marine environment artist AG Saño and digital artists Mariel Garcia, Nelvin Supilanas, Rehts Merejilla, and Mark Magnaye are now available in HUAWEI Themes.

Discovering the Traditional, Modern, and Natural Attractions in Japan in 12 Days [An Impulsive Decision, a Flexible Itinerary, and a YouTube Adventure]

Japan has been in my travel bucket list for the longest time. I have always been fascinated by how tradition and modernization seamlessly coexist in the country. You get to experience history through well-preserved culture and also somehow travel to the future. To be honest, I didn't think I would be able to visit Japan within the next 3-5 years of my life... or maybe 10! I knew it was going to be expensive for me, and I knew I needed to plan it well to get the most out of my hard-earned money.

An Impulsive Decision

As luck would have it, I went on a 12-day Japan adventure last year on an impulse! My parents and I tagged along a friend and her family. The borderline obsessive-compulsive planner in me kind of died a little. My peace of mind relies on the fact that I'm traveling with my parents. Whatever happens, I'm pretty sure I would never go hungry. 🤣

The tour package arranged by my friend's family was for 6 days, including travel time, but my fam stayed for about a week more to explore. ⁠

A Flexible Itinerary

Believe it or not, we didn't have a solid plan on how to spend those extra days in Japan. We just decided to wing it and figure out our itinerary as we go. Brave? Crazy? Or just plain lazy? Haha! ⁠

Of course, we could have cut costs here and there had we planned the trip better, but still, the adventure was worth it. We totally enjoyed our trip and we embraced what the place had to offer... without the pressure of having to tick off boxes on our imaginary travel bucket list.⁠

One thing I loved about having a flexible itinerary was the freedom to listen to our bodies. We slept in when we're tired; we stayed longer when we feel like relaxing more; and we left when we got a little bored. We just lived one day at a time.

A 4-Star Luxury Hotel Near the Airport: Belmont Hotel Manila Review

It's that time of the year again! Time for the Blogafest, the annual gathering of content creators in the country! Together with the Iligan Bloggers Society fambam, we stayed at the Belmont Hotel. This is my review of my 3D2N stay in this 4-star luxury hotel, which is one of the 2019 winners of the World Luxury Hotel Awards.

To start off, here's a quick video during our stay there:

LOCATION

Belmont Hotel Manila is only a 5-minute walk away from Ninoy Aquino International Airport’s Terminal 3 via the Runway Manila footbridge.

The hotel stands within Newport City in Resorts World Manila, the first integrated tourist destination in the country. Belmont Hotel is right across Marriott Grand Ballroom and a few meters away from Newport Mall and Newport Performing Arts Theater.

ROOM

We stayed in a deluxe room, an air-conditioned room with two single beds, which are very comfortable and with fresh, well-pressed linen. I love that they have extra pillows in the closet should you need them. The room offers premium amenities, such as Belmont Signature green tea bathroom amenities.

The wardrobe closet has a huge space for the luggage, complete with hangers. Bathrobes, bedroom slippers, hairdryer, bottled water (not in plastic; win for the environment!), and coffee and tea-making facilities are also available for the guests.

Other amenities include a 32” LCD TV, in-room personal safe, mini-fridge, and telephone. For those of us who need to catch up with work, there's a full-size executive writing desk in the room, complete with notepad and ball pen. Plus there's wifi connection!

BATHROOM AND TOILETRIES

The toilet and bathroom area is clean, spacious, and well-lit (perfect for bathroom selfies!). Hot and cold shower is available. There are premium green tea toiletries for use. Face, hand, and bath towels are of great quality as well.

Other personal items such as vanity kit, dental care kit, shaving kit, and sewing kit are also provided.

STAFF

We received the warmest welcome when we came in. The check-in process was smooth, and their staff are all smiles and ready to help. Everyone who worked in the hotel is courteous, well-trained, warm and friendly. They are very helpful, attentive, and are quick to respond to our queries and requests.

HOTEL FACILITIES

Guests of the hotel have free access to the swimming pool, gym, and sauna.

TIP: Pack your favorite swimwear and gym clothes (and footwear) should you plan to burn off those excess calories from their breakfast buffet.

BREAKFAST

Speaking of breakfast, there's a breakfast buffet at the Cafe Belmont for guests from 6:00AM to 10:00AM.

There's a wide assortment of breakfast goodies. There are sausages, eggs, noodles, bread, cereals, fruits, salads, pancakes, waffles, French toast, yogurt, oatmeal, and many more.

PRICE

Rate starts at PHP 5,515.14 (6,223.84 Incl. Taxes & Fees) per night. Check room rates and other hotel stay packages here.

WIFI

There is complimentary WiFi internet access in rooms.

IN SUMMARY

PROS:

convenient location; within walking distance to NAIA Terminal 3, shopping destinations, tourist attractions, and transportation access

CONS:

WiFi can be a little wonky at times.

BOTTOM LINE:

Overall, I highly recommend staying in Belmont Hotel Manila for your next staycation in Metro Manila. Service is excellent. Location is perfect. Amenities are great.

The hotel is also perfect for quick layovers, especially if you are flying in and out of Manila via NAIA Terminal 3.

How to Spend 48 Hours in Iloilo: What to See and Do in the City of Love

Sometime last year, together with the Iligan Bloggers Society fambam, we took Air Asia's inaugural flight from Cagayan de Oro City to Iloilo. Okay, out with it: WE WENT WITHOUT A FIXED ITINERARY! 🤦 Let's just say we're spontaneous and adventurous like that, although that's admittedly not 100% true. Haha! We decided to have a chill type of travel and just play it by ear, which basically translates to "we don't have a plan."

So did we see much of Iloilo after all? Here's a quick video of our 48-hour adventure. Read on for more details of our impromptu itinerary.

The Itinerary

Iloilo is all about its rich and colorful history and spectacular architecture. If you have just 48 hours in Iloilo, you need to plan your day in such a way that you enjoy the best of its culture. We have a pretty short checklist: Good food, old churches, and maybe a glimpse of the "new" Iloilo.

Day 1:

📍 Madison Hotel PHL

Our first order of business: Catch some precious zzzzzz's. We checked in at Madison Hotel and rested for a few hours while we crowdsourced how we're spending the next couple of days in the City of Love. We were serious about taking our sweet time and just have a laidback adventure. Haha!

📍 Esplanade Boardwalk, Mandurriao, Iloilo City

Feeling refreshed and well-rested, we stepped out for a sunset walk at the Esplanade Boardwalk. It's where the "I am Iloilo" sign is located. There were tourists and locals in the area -- strolling, jogging, paddle boating, or eating out.

📍 Molo Mansion

We continued our walking adventure to Molo Mansion, which is just across Molo Church and Molo Plaza. The mansion was built in the 1920s and was reopened to the public in 2015 as a cultural souvenir shop (Kultura).

There's also a cafe within the compound, where we tried the authentic Pancit Molo.

Day 2:

For Day 2, we still wanted to keep it easy and chill. We opted to hire a van for an entire day. Quick side note: We contacted the van that brought us from the airport to our hotel the previous day. We told the driver we wanted to go to Garin Farm and then visit some old churches in Iloilo.

📍 Guimbal Vanishing Mansion

On our way to Garin Farm in San Joaquin, we had a quick stopover at Guimbal Vanishing Mansion. Stories have it that at this spot, where a century-old acacia tree and a statue stand, is where taxi drivers have reportedly picked up a white lady, who then directs them to a gate that leads to a mansion.

📍 Garin Farm

Garin Farm Pilgrimage Resort is an inland resort in San Joaquin, Iloilo that integrates agriculture, leisure, and religion. It features a farm, a recreational place with tons of activities, and a pilgrimage site all in one. Shuttles are available for easier access to the key features of the resort.

Garin Farm is famous for its Stairway to Heaven, a 400-plus stairway that represents a journey from the creation to ascension. There is a Divine Mercy Dark Meditation Tunnel on the Pilgrimage Hill that leads to its main attraction, a representation of heaven -- with God the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, surrounded by angels and saints.

📍 Camposanto De San Joaquin

On our way back to Iloilo City, we had another quick stopover at Camposanto de San Joaquin. It's a Catholic cemetery in San Joaquin, which was designated as a National Cultural Treasure by the National Museum of the Philippines.

📍 Miagao Church

The Santo Tomás de Villanueva Parish Church, or Miagao Church, was declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993. It was built in a Baroque Romanesque architectural style and was mainly made of adobe, egg, coral, and limestone.

📍 Lunch Stop: Doming's Talabahan

When visiting Iloilo, eating talaba (oyster) is a must. We stopped at Doming's Talabahan, a no-frills eatery located along the national highway of Miagao, for lunch.

📍 Guimbal Parish Church

The Parish of St. Nicolas of Tolentino, or Guimbal Church, made of yellow adobe and coral stones, is also one of the oldest churches in the country.

📍 Tigbauan Church

We also dropped by San Juan Sahagun Parish Church, or Tigbauan Church, in the town of Tigbauan, Iloilo. It was built in Spanish Baroque style and features intricate designs in its interior. The biggest mosaic is found on the church’s altar in a dome, showing Jesus and his disciples, heaven, earth, and hell.

📍 Iloilo Business Park

Before heading to our final church stop, we had another quick stopover for a glimpse of the "new" Iloilo. We stopped by Iloilo Business Park and took pictures of Casa de Emperador, which houses the Iloilo Museum of Contemporary Art (ILOMOCA), the first museum dedicated to contemporary and modern art in Visayas and Mindanao. We didn't have a chance to get into the museum as we were kind of pressed for time. Saving that for our next visit. :)

📍 Jaro Cathedral Church

We then headed to Jaro Cathedral, which was constructed in the Romanesque Revival style. The facade of the Cathedral features stairs leading to the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Candles.

📍 Souvenir Shopping: Original Deocampo Barquillos

It's Filipino culture to always bring pasalubong. So we made sure to visit this shop in Jaro.

We then went back to the hotel for a quick shuteye and freshen up a bit before heading out for dinner.

📍 Dinner: The Pitstop Restaurant SM City Iloilo Southpoint

For dinner, we wanted something uniquely Ilonggo. We opted for the Pitstop, which serves nearly everything with Guimaras mango -- from pizza to bulalo and sisig. Interesting!

📍 Plazuela Dos
After a very filling dinner, we walked around SM City Southpoint to a nearby Plazuela Dos before heading back to the hotel.

Sticking with our plan of keeping the itinerary chill and easy, we opted to stay in the hotel (while some friends went back to Molo Church) while waiting for our AirAsia flight back to Cagayan de Oro City.

#TAIWANderful: A 4D3N Taipei + Taichung Experience

It's easy to see why Taiwan is fast-growing in popularity as a travel destination. Tagged as "The Heart of Asia," Taiwan truly is a perfect destination in Asia that must not be missed. Our 4D3N adventure with my For Mindanao fambam was a whirlwind of interesting activities!

The Itinerary

Our trip is a combination of guided tour and DIY adventure. Flight and hotel bookings plus a 1-day tour in Taichung were arranged through Ms Rhizz of Rhizz Tours and Travel (based in Bohol). Vouchers to major attractions, unlimited fun pass, and 4G sim were pre-booked via Klook. And all directions as we went around Taipei, c/o the ever reliable Google Maps and compass apps. 😂

We arranged our itinerary in a way to have a balanced experience of Taiwan and explore the beautiful attractions, nature, food, and culture and arts.

What to do upon arrival (Taoyuan International Airport):

Money changer. There are money changers in Taoyuan International Airport. [Note: You can also buy New Taiwan Dollar (NTD) before flying to Taiwan. There's a money changer in Mactan Cebu International Airport near Burger King and Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf.]
Pick up Taipei unlimited 1-day pass and 4G sim with unlimited data (pre-booked via Klook).
Purchase and load Easy Card. The card is 100 NTD, which we loaded with 400 NTD to be used for bus and train fares and other purchases.
Take the express train to hotel.

Travel Tip #1:

Bring your own water bottle. It's easy to find public drinking fountains for refill. You're helping the environment AND saving some money. 😉

Where to Stay When in Taipei:

📍 Diary of Taipei Hotel台北日記旅店-台北車站館 - Taipei Main Station

Conveniently located in downtown Taipei, the Diary of Taipei Hotel is a short 5- to 8-min walk from Taipei Main Station. Beds are large and comfortable. Linens are clean, and the rooms are cleaned daily. Hot and cold shower is available too... perfect for a nice hot bath for a relaxing slumber after a day of touring. I'll blog a separate blog post for a hotel review.

Travel Tip #2:

Take note of the name and address of the hotel in Chinese, just in case you need to ride a taxi at some point. Not all taxi drivers in Taiwan can converse in English. We kept the hotel's business card to show the driver when we get too tired to figure out how to commute back to the hotel.

What to Do and See When in Taiwan

Taipei Free Walking Tour

We started our Taiwan adventure by getting acquainted with the culture and interesting architecture of Taipei. We booked the Taipei Free Walking Tour Golden Age Route via Klook. Shout out to Jack, Viki, and Pei of Like It Formosa 來去福爾摩沙! They did a very great job of touring us around and helping us understand the rich history and culture of Taiwan.

TaipeiEYE Chinese Opera

Day 1 of #TAIWANderful adventure continues with a TaipeiEYE臺北戲棚 Chinese Opera experience. We went to see an authentic (subtitled) traditional Chinese performing arts.

Shuangcheng Street Night Market

From TaipeiEYE, we walked for about 8 to 10 minutes to Shuangcheng St. for dinner. It's a fairly short block, but the food options are vast.

Taichung

For our trip to Taichung on day 2, we went the easier, more comfortable route and pre-booked a van. We didn't want to waste time getting lost. Haha! And of course, there's peace in knowing you can sleep while in transit and be sure that you'll arrive at your destination.

We booked the chartered car service through Rhizz Travel and Tours. Fee is Php 2000 per head. The van was comfortable, air-conditioned, and with free wi-fi. Yey! Our driver/tour guide is Alex. He can speak English well, so we didn't have trouble conversing with him. Plus his playlist in the van includes OPM songs. My OPM heart is happy. Haha!

Travel Tip #4:

If you want a day tour outside Taipei, it is best to book a chartered car service. It may be a little pricier than fully DIYing, but the peace of mind you'll have is priceless. ;)

Rainbow Village

Rainbow Village is a colorful settlement in Taichung famous for its vibrantly painted houses and streets.

The village also has an interesting and inspiring history behind it. It was created by Huang Yong Fu ('Rainbow Grandpa') in an effort to save his village from demolition.

Taichung World Flora Exposition

Taichung World Flora Exposition is an international horticultural expo, featuring the best of the best. Most information are written in Chinese/Taiwanese though. So... there's that. But it was a feast to the eyes nonetheless.

Zhongshe Flower Market

We finished our short Taichung adventure with a visit to Zhongshe Flower Market (or Chungshe), which features beautifully landscaped gardens with colorful flowers.

The vibrant hues make excellent backgrounds for 'em Instagram posts.

Shilin Night Market

After Taichung, we went back to Taipei. We asked Alex to drop us off at Shilin Night Market instead of back to the hotel. We just couldn't miss the largest and most famous night market in Taiwan.

After having our dinner, we roamed around Shilin Market to buy some pasalubong. And of course, what better way to spend in a foreign country than disappear into the crowd and have an impromptu photoshoot session. Haha!

Taipei Fun Pass

Now on to day 3. We pre-purchased 1-day Taipei Unlimited Fun Pass through Klook, which we picked up in the airport.

The pass combines attractions and transportation for one great value, with access to 12 different attractions, unlimited rides to the Taipei MRT, Taipei and New Taipei City bus, and 4 Taiwan Tourist Shuttle Routes. Check here for more details.

We didn't want to cram the day with so much activities, so we limited our itinerary to:

National Palace Museum

The National Palace Museum is a must-visit in Taiwan. It is a world-famous museum that houses a huge collection of classic cultural relics of the Chinese imperial court dating back thousands of years.

Chiang Kai-Shek Shilin Residence

After a quick lunch, we then proceeded to our next destination, which is a short bus ride away. We visited the former residence of Chiang Kai-shek and his wife Soong Mei-ling. It is a designated historical site that celebrates their accomplishments and huge contributions to the growth of Taiwan in the modern era.

Taipei 101 Observatory

We also made sure to visit the tallest building towering above the city like the gigantic bamboo stalk to appreciate an overlooking view of the beautiful city. Tickets and entrance are on the 5th floor of the Taipei 101 Shopping Mall. The pressure-controlled elevator ride up was an experience itself, taking you to the 89th floor in 40 seconds. Observation decks are on the 88th and 89th floors, and there is an outdoor deck on the 91st floor opened on some occasions, weather permitting.

Linjiang (Tonghua) Night Market

To cap off the day, we opted to have one more night market experience on our last night in Taipei. We went to Linjiang (Tonghua) Night Market because of its proximity to Taipei 101. We had dinner and strolled around for more souvenir shopping. This one is pretty low-key but still very lively. It is also rarely visited by tourists, so it feels more local.

National Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall

On the last day of our #TAIWANderful adventure, we wanted a fairly easy day. We only had one attraction to visit -- the National CKS Memorial Hall. This historical landmark in Taiwan was erected in honor of Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek, the former President of the Republic of China.

We took lots of pictures and made sure to witness the changing of guards.

And then we went back to the hotel to pick up our things and headed back to the airport.

Food in Taiwan

One of the highlights of Taiwan is the food scene. It really is a gastronomic adventure! The rich culture of Taiwan, with both western (European) and eastern (Chinese and Japanese) influences well translates into a rich collection of food items to try. So, I'm just dumping food shots here.

Travel Tip #5:

Serving size generally is huge for an average Filipino appetite. If you're traveling with a group, best to just share. Otherwise, you may bring your own container to pack the excess for your next meal.

Lanao del Norte | An Underrated Destination for Food, Culture, and Adventure

When traveling to Mindanao, do yourself a favor: don't forget Lanao del Norte. During a recent trip to the province with the Iligan Bloggers Society fambam, it was easy to see why Lanao del Norte is growing in popularity for foodie spots, culture, sports venues, and adventure. Our two days in LDN were a whirlwind of activities with fragments of insights and reflections.

Where to Stay

We stayed in Mindanao Civic Center Hotel, a government-owned accommodation in the provincial capital. Located along the National Highway, it's a few minutes' ride from Tubod Bus Terminal and just a short walk away from Mindanao Civic Center Sports Complex. Where to Eat

If you are up for a gastronomic adventure, Lanao del Norte will not disappoint. It is home to many homegrown restaurants and cafes. We were able to try a few foodie spots.

Andrew's Pizza

This homegrown pizzeria started in the municipality of Tubod. They are known for their simple, fresh, heart-warming pizza. Soy Cafe and Diner

Another homegrown cafe in Lanao del Norte is Soy Cafe and Diner in the municipality of Lala. It is known for their modern Filipino and fusion cuisine.

We got to try their bestsellers: Baby back ribs (Php 199), shrimp pasta (Php170), and halo-halo (Php 95). Great value for money!

Bonus points for the instagrammable portions of this quaint shop. 😊

Campilan Bakery and Barbecue

Campilan Bakery has been in the food industry since the 1960s.

Fun fact: They still use a traditional brick oven, locally known as pugon, that has been built way back when they started. It just needed repair after Typhoon Vinta last year.

The bakery is popular for their ensaymada, a soft, sweet bread covered with butter and sugar topped with lots of grated cheese. Unfortunately, it was sold out when we got there – definitely a good reason to come back.

We were able to try the grilled food for dinner though. What struck me was the distinct taste of each of the menu items. They don’t use generic marinade; neither do they use uniform marinades. The meat is tender and rich in flavor with fresh garlic and spices.

Other Foodstuff to Try

Being home to people of diverse culture, Lanao del Norte is also a melting pot of delicious cuisine. People from different backgrounds settle in the province, bringing and sharing their native culture's flavors and foods. There were so many other food that we wanted to try but unfortunately, 2 days is not enough to fully experience the gastronomic adventure the province has to offer. We wanted to try the crabs from Lala, the seafood in Mukas, the lechon of Lanao, and the Meranao dishes from the predominantly Muslim municipalities. So perhaps for our future visits…

What to do and see

Lanao del Norte is blessed with natural and man-made wonders. Here are some places of interest to visit:

Pikalawag Beach, Sultan Naga Dimaporo

Sultan Naga Dimaporo is gaining popularity recently for its inflatable waterpark. It also offers water adventures like banana boat, kayak, and flying fish to satisfy your need for adrenaline rush.

The beach is a little more than an hour away south bound from Capital town Tubod, Lanao del Norte.

La Libertad Lake Adventure, Kapatagan

For those looking for a rather laid-back type of adventure, there’s La Libertad Lake Adventure in Kapatagan. At Php 75 per hour (Php 50 / head for 30 minutes), you can try the swan pedal boat or kayak boat and roam around the lake.

Cathedral Falls, Kapatagan

Cathedral Falls, located in Brgy. Waterfalls, Kapatagan, is one of the most accessible waterfalls in the country. It is along the access road. No trekking involved! It got its name from its unique rock wall that resembles a pipe organ often found in cathedrals.

Mindanao Civic Center, Tubod

Mindanao Civic Center (MCC) in Tubod is a 71-hectare integrated complex which houses a hotel, cafeteria, gym, swimming pool, oval, basketball, volleyball and tennis courts, baseball field, and other sports facilities. MCC also hosts several motocross events, giving the province its moniker of “Motocross Capital of the Philippines.”

Dapit Alim, Tubod

Dapit Alim is a Cebuano word which has a triple meaning of place, invitation, and nearness. "Alim" translates to heal, the word "Alima" meaning to care. Dapit Alim is therefore a place, invitation, and nearness to healing. This shrine in Tubod is a perfect place for prayer, contemplation, meditation, and for retreats.

Pagayawan Falls, Bacolod

Pagayawan Falls in Bacolod is a sight to behold. It is located about 10- to 15 minutes’ drive from the town proper. There is already a paved access road to the viewing deck. This is also the proposed power source of a hydroelectric power plant to be constructed soon in the area, a project initiated by the LGU through the assistance of an international organization.

Boardwalk, Kauswagan

Another tourist spot in Lanao del Norte is the longest boardwalk marine ecotourism park in Kauswagan. It’s perfect for sunset watching.

When to Go

The Land of Beauty and Bounty celebrates several festivals in different municipalities all year round. The locals, however, highly suggest visiting in July in time for Sagayan Festival and the celebration of Araw ng Lanao del Norte. It is highlighted by a world-class fireworks display, aptly called “Ilaw ng Lanao del Norte.”

The People of Lanao del Norte

After going about the province, I realized that the strength of Lanao del Norte is its people. Lanao del Norte may not have towering skyscrapers or humongous amusement parks, but they certainly have the warmest and most welcoming people here. Like my hometown, Iligan City (which used to be part of the province), Lanao del Norte is home to people of rich and diverse culture. Christians and Muslims here live a harmonious and peaceful life. They are bounded by mutual respect for differences in culture and religious beliefs.

Culture and Arts

While the population of the province is predominantly Christian, the influence of Meranao is evident in their arts and crafts. While Lanao del Norte is known for excelling in festivals such as Sinulog (Christian), they don’t forget to highlight the Meranao culture in their furniture and decorations.

Stewards of Unity and Peace

The people here all work together to safeguard peace. After all of the struggles and challenges, Lanao del Norte remains strong and united. We chanced upon a gathering of locals to discuss issues that will potentially affect everyone in the province. I appreciated that everyone, regardless of culture and religious belief, went out to participate in the discussion.

Community Resilience

Our quick visit also made us appreciate the incredible resilience of the people. Last year may have been one of the worst times for Lanao del Norte. Marawi Siege happened in their closest neighbor, Lanao del Sur. And in late 2017, a few municipalities in the province were severely devastated by Typhoon Vinta. Barely a year after, the province is now back to its feet, with everyone helping each other to move forward. It’s inspiring and enlightening to see the people, regardless of culture and religious belief, caring and looking out for each other.

Metro Manila | A Weekend of Luxury in Nobu Hotel, City of Dreams Manila

This year turned out to be a crazy busy one for me. Not complaining though, because I loved working on the exciting things that I have been working on. But I would openly welcome opportunities to take a break from the busy daily grind. Imagine the joy when I learned that Blogapalooza is going to be in City of Dreams Manila! Aside from upgrading my knowledge and skills and networking with fellow bloggers from all over the country, we get to stay in the first-of-its-kind boutique Nobu Hotel in Asia as well. Of course, I'm attending! 😊

This is my review of my 3D2N stay in this posh boutique hotel.

To start off, here's a quick video during our stay there:

LOCATION

Nobu Hotel is one of the three luxury hotels in City of Dreams Manila. It's a 10- to 15-min drive away from NAIA airport and also near SM Mall of Asia and other places of interest. Nobu Hotel is easily accessible via taxi or Grab car.

ROOM

We stayed in a deluxe room, an air-conditioned 36-square-meter room with two queen beds, which are very comfortable and with fresh, well-pressed linen. The room features elegant, contemporary Japanese interiors plus a beautiful city view, where we can see airplanes flying to and from NAIA!

The wardrobe closet has a huge space for the luggage, complete with hangers, iron and ironing board. Bathrobes, bedroom slippers, bottled water, and a selection of Ikaati premium tea are provided for the guests as well.

And of course, for guests who have to catch up with work, there's a small table for work (and/or dining) in the room. Bonus points for the strong wifi connection!

BATHROOM AND TOILETRIES

The toilet and bathroom area is clean, spacious, and well-lit. Hot and cold shower is available. There are premium Natura Bisse toiletries for use. Face, hand, and bath towels are of great quality as well.

Other personal items such as vanity kit, dental care kit, and sewing kit are also provided.

STAFF

We arrived at Nobu Hotel close to midnight, but their staff are still all smiles and ready to help. We called up the reception to request for additional pillows, and they were quick to assist us. Everyone who worked in the hotel is courteous, well-trained, warm and friendly. They are very helpful, attentive, and are able to respond to our queries and requests.

HOTEL FACILITIES

Guests of the hotel have free access to the swimming pool and gym.

TIP: Pack your favorite swimwear and gym clothes (and footwear) should you plan to burn off those excess calories from their incredible breakfast buffet.

BREAKFAST

Speaking of breakfast, there's a free buffet at the Nobu Restaurant for guests from 6:00AM to 10:00AM.

There's a wide assortment of breakfast goodies. There's bacon, sausages, bread, cereals, fruits, pancakes, French toast, and many more. There's also Pinoy breakfast favorites like taho and pan de sal!

PRICE

Rate starts at PHP 9,300 per night (room only). Check room rates and other hotel stay packages here.

WIFI

There is complimentary WiFi internet access in rooms and within City of Dreams Manila.

I tried the free internet connection, with Speedtest result averaging around 100Mbps.

IN SUMMARY

PROS:

convenient location; within walking distance to shopping destinations, tourist attractions, and transportation access
with complimentary WiFi internet access
spacious bathroom with hot and cold shower
provides premium supplies for personal care and tea fix
pool and gym access
online booking available

CONS:

It's a little pricey. But hey, for the luxury and comfort, all worth it!

BOTTOM LINE:

Overall, I highly recommend staying in Nobu Hotel City of Dreams Manila for your next staycation in Metro Manila. The entire staff is awesome. Service is excellent. Everything is great!

Life Lessons Learned from Our Recent Philippine Airlines Flight

Life has a funny way of teaching us lessons. Lessons are not always confined within the four walls of a classroom or the safe haven of home. Sometimes, random happenings in life -- like taking a Philippine Airlines flight -- can be a gentle reminder of things we needed to re-learn.

This is a story of us as chance passengers. 😁

Coming home after the Blogapalooza weekend, we were booked for a 7:00 pm MNL-CDO Philippine Airlines flight. We'll have ample time to sleep in, enjoy the amenities in Nobu Hotel, and stay a little longer in the breakfast buffet.

We initially planned to maybe just spend the afternoon in City of Dreams Manila or SM Mall of Asia while waiting for our scheduled flight. At around noon, however, we decided to just check out and head straight to the airport and try to request for an earlier flight, at 2:20 pm. That way, we'll be in Iligan by 6:00 pm and I'd be able to join my family for the Sunday mass.

We stayed here patiently waiting for advice if we can be accommodated at an earlier flight.

We were advised to wait until about 1:30pm, after the last call for check-in. We had an hour or so to kill, so we took advantage of the free wifi and got some work done.

Life Lesson #1:

Use available resources and find ways to be productive.

I needed to have some work completed. So I opened up my laptop and tapped away while waiting. After all, this will earn me more moolah for the next adventures. 😂

At about 1:30pm, we were called back at the standby counter and we were told that we can be accommodated. Yey! We were given our boarding passes and ushered to the check-in counter for our luggage and then headed to the departure area as the passengers start to line up for boarding.

Ready for boarding! :)

We were prepared to be seated at the most uncomfortable part of the plane, perhaps at the middle area where we would have to squeeze through the throngs of passengers already in the aircraft. We were chance passengers after all -- we could very well be the least priority because we were not supposed to be there in the first place.

To our surprise, we were given reserved seats. We were behind the business class seats. Haha!

We felt like princesses in the flight. Snack treats of yogurt, chicken burger, coffee and juice were filling, which was also timely because we were just going to skip lunch after a rather heavy brunch at the hotel.

This leads me to another life lesson.

Life Lesson #2:

Hope for the best, plan for the worst, and prepare to be surprised.

We hoped to hop into the afternoon flight, but we were ready to camp in the airport in case we needed to stay until our original 7:00pm flight. The actual "best" we hoped for was to be able to be back in Iligan City by 6:00pm, we got way more than that. What a pleasant surprise!

After we safely landed and passengers were ready to disembark, we stayed inside to have a photo of the empty aircraft and the awesome crew.

Since we were in the aisle seats, we had to move to allow other people on our row to disembark. We transferred into the business class seats while waiting. Of course, we had to take selfies! LOL.

Thanks to the warm and friendly flight crew and entire Philippine Airlines staff on the ground, our flight home was a memorable one.

Life Lesson #3:

Take chances and embrace spontaneity.

My biggest takeaway for this entire experience was to take chances. In this "adulting" phase we are in, it is kind of hard to intentionally let go and surrender to the spontaneity of the moment. Plans, lists and calendars are great. They help us be responsible and accountable for our own actions and productivity, but sometimes we just need to give in to the spontaneous kid inside of us. Loosen up a bit and leave it up to the universe to do its magic.

So for those of you who like to have life planned out, let this experience of chance passengers be a reminder that it is okay to take risks once in a while. Be open to new experiences, even if they are not perfect. Instead of listening to the voice that asks "what could go wrong?" try asking “what’s the worst thing that could happen?” Who knows what new world of possibilities becomes available.

Go ahead and take a chance and welcome life's surprises with open arms and heart.

Palawan | Planning the Perfect Travel Itinerary

With its picturesque sites and beautiful people, it is no surprise that this idyllic island has been voted “world’s best island” by readers of Travel + Leisure magazine three times (2013, 2016, and 2017).

Itinerary

We planned our Palawan trip to follow the exit conference of Go Social: A Digital Marketing Tour Boot Camp. We needed some serious rest and relaxation after going to Iligan, Cotabato, Cebu, and Baguio for the implementation of our project. We felt we have exhausted our energies and brain power to plan, and we just needed a trusted agency to take care of the planning for our much-needed R&R. Thank goodness for travel agencies!

Our Palawan escapade was arranged by Northern Hope Tours. We wanted to visit both El Nido and Puerto Princesa, and would love to have a good combination of places to visit for us to appreciate nature, great food, and incredible culture. Here's what our friends from Northern Hope Tours suggested for our tour:

We took the MNL-PPS flight via AirAsia. I remember loooong queues and a whole lot of rushing in the airport. Good thing AirAsia serves in-flight meals, and I got to try Uncle Chin's Chicken Rice, a Chinese Malaysian dish made of seasoned rice, served with roast chicken and accompanied with a chili, ginger and garlic sauce. Yumyum!

Our flight arrived in Puerto Princesa at around 3:00 in the afternoon, giving us enough time to travel and check in at our El Nido accommodation. El Nido is 6 hours away from Puerto Princesa. Northern Hope Inn arranged for pickup from the airport. We had a quick stop for supplies (water, toiletries, and snack items) and aqua shoes rental in Puerto Princesa before heading to El Nido.

We stayed in Northern Hope Inn Extension. It's a stone's throw away from the port and a few steps to shops and restaurants. Plus, we have this nice view from the rooftop:

Following a day of traveling to El Nido, day 2 of our Palawan adventure was a lazy beach day. We spent the day in Nacpan Beach. We stayed for lunch until sunset viewing, all the time on a full-on beach-bum mode.

After a lazy day on the beach, we are ready for the highlight of El Nido travels -- island hopping. They have standardized tours categorized into A, B, C, and D, with each tour covering at least 5 places of interest. Each tour starts at around 9:00 in the morning and ends at around 4:00 in the afternoon.

Here's a list of the standard tours offered:
Tour A: Lagoon Tour. Includes a visit to Big Lagoon, Small Lagoon, Simizu Island, Secret Lagoon and 7 Commandos Beach. Standard Rate: Php 1,200/person

Tour B: Cave Tour. Covers traveling to Entalula Island, Pinagbuyutan Island, Snake Island, Cudugnon Cave and Cathedral Cave. Standard Rate: Php 1,300/person

Tour C: Shrine Tour. Includes a visit to Hidden Beach, Helicopter Island, Secret Beach, Matinloc Shrine and Star Beach. Standard Rate: Php 1,400/person

Tour D: Beach Tour. Covers Bukal Island, Ipil Beach, Nat-Nat Beach, Cadlao Lagoon and Paradise Beach. Standard Rate: Php 1,200/person

We allotted 2 days for island hopping, and to allow us to experience the best of the best, Northern Hope Tours offered their combination tours. Day 3 was for Tours C&D; and day 4 for A&B.

Travel Tip: Ask about combination tours to maximize your travel time in El Nido.

We couldn't get enough of the amazing islands and islets in Palawan, so our Puerto Princesa tours started with another island hopping activity -- Honda Bay Tour. We embraced an extra day of swimming, people watching, and beach bumming.

Travel Tip: We took this island hopping tour as a chill day after our adventure-filled El Nido island hopping. You may want an 'easier' kind of day and have a city tour instead to buy pasalubong.

Day 5 also ended with a lovely Iwahig Firefly Watching experience. It's definitely one of the highlights of our Palawan Adventure. If you're planning a Puerto Princesa trip, do yourself a favor and make sure to book a firefly watching tour. The rate includes a buffet dinner by the way.

For our last full day of tour, we visited the famous Puerto Princesa Undergound River.

And then, we went on a Puerto Princesa City Tour, stopping by the crocodile farm, Baker's Hill, and Palaw'an Village. We also stopped at Karst Mountain / Elephant Cave, which was featured in The Amazing Race Philippines (2012) and The Amazing Race Ukraine (2013). We ended our stay in Palawan with a sumptuous dinner at KaLui.

We spent 7 days in Palawan, but we felt it is not enough. There's still so much places to explore, food to devour, and culture to appreciate. But thanks to the amazing people of Northern Hope Tours for the amazing experience. It is a great sneak peek of what Palawan has to offer. We are definitely coming back for more!

Iligan City | Diyandi Festival Street Dancing Competition 2018

September is a culturally charged month for Iligan City. It is when we celebrate the month-long Diyandi Festival. One of the highlights of the festivities is the annual street dancing competition. This year, as usual, Iliganons flock the streets to witness this colorful event.

Six groups danced their way through a 3-kilometer distance from the port area going to the Anahaw Amphitheater at the City Hall. It was jam-packed with everyone eager to witness the showdown of the different participating groups.

The dances showcased the rich and varied cultural traditions of the city, narrating the divine protection of St. Michael to the united people of Iligan -- the Dumagats (now Christians), the Maranaos (Muslims) and the Higaonons (lumads or natives). It is highlighted by the eskrima, a dance form simulating a fight between the patron saint and his enemies, depicting the celestial battle between the forces of good and evil. The dances features the faith of the Iliganons that in the end, good always triumphs over evil.

There are many extraordinary things to do in the bustling metropolis that one can really soak up the best of the Greek experience. The lively city is both ancient and modern. There are incredible things to explore in Athens, and one can look forward to creative sightseeing and experiences.

There are still many reasons to visit Greece. The great food, superb mountain scenery, and stunning beaches are hard to explore. Just carry enough water and wear sturdy shoes and light clothes. After all, you should feel comfortable and make the most of those 48 hours in Greece. Once you arrive at your hotel, have a good night sleep and relax completely for the great experiences that await you in the next two days.

The first 24 hours

Morning

Start your day early and wander in central Monastiraki Square which is a colorful market. You can take a quick break here and enjoy a quick drink. Avissinias Square is the center of Monastiraki's antique market and is an excellent spot for browsing traditional furniture.

Walk past Hadrian’s Library and go south on Dioskouron towards the city’s focal points, the Roman Agora. You can still see the grand marble clock tower The Tower of the Winds. Roman Agora is located on the northernmost side. It was once a hub of activity for the Ancient Romans and was used as a market.

You can head towards the west on Polignotou and go around Areopagus Hill. Make a visit to the Acropolis Museum. Designed by architect Bernard Tschumi, the design of the museum recreates the landscape of the Acropolis. The treasures displayed on the sloping galleries are from the hillside while the Parthenon Gallery at the top evokes the scale of the marbles. Get majestic views of the ancient monument from the restaurant.

You can climb through a broad pedestrian avenue through the pine woods on the south slope of Acropolis Hill. Visit the Dionyssiou Areopagitou and the Ancient Theatre of Dionysos, which is the oldest surviving theater of the world.

You need about 2-3 hours to explore this craggy land and if you still have time and energy, make way to the temple to the city’s ancient goddess, Athena, the Parthenon. Just enjoy a cup of coffee in Athens’ best museum cafés that have both indoor and outdoor seating.

Afternoon

There are several eateries nearby, but Yard Café is a popular spot. After reading for some time, you can have a look at the Le Chocolat – Matsouka, which is a hive of Greek produce and fancy chocolates.

Go through the picturesque Filopappou Hill, which is located towards the buzzing area of Koukaki. The National Museum of Contemporary Art is located inside a former factory and is a popular spot for fashion and design lovers. Enjoy watching endless people in the bars and café and pick a snack here.

Later, you can wander in Plaka that is filled with endless souvenir shops. Explore the maze of narrow streets and take shots of the pastel-colored houses covered with bougainvillea. Shop at those interesting Greek design shops.

Evening

You can visit Exarcheia, which is an artistic neighborhood and is very exciting to explore. Walk through the neighborhood to come across endless galleries and vintage stores.

There are many food options, and a popular among the tourists is a narrow lane of Herakleidon. Psirri offers a maze of restaurants that offer both traditional and Modern Greek fare.

You can later wind down with a drink at one of the rooftop bars and enjoy picturesque views of the city and the Acropolis. It is a must to visit the Acropolis.

The next 24 hours

Morning

The next day, you can spend the morning relaxing on the beach. You can try windsurfing or ride the waves. Astir Beach is highly recommended for those looking for a luxurious beach experience.

After some time, you can head towards the mountain of Parnassos and explore historic gorges and caves. Take off the beaten path and enjoy a picnic in a sheepfold. If time permits, you can take a short ferry ride from Athens to nearby picturesque islands.

Afternoon

During the latter part of the day, you can escape to the countryside and visit an organic farm. This is the right way to get up close and personal with Greek gastronomy. You can feed the animals and pick your vegetables. Enjoy food made with the fresh ingredients you picked and enjoy an unforgettable experience.

Evening

Explore Athens nightlife and the best of Athens bars and clubs. You can enjoy some live entertainment at Estate Seaside or opt for an early cocktail by the sea at Balux Cafe Seaside.

Late at night, you can visit the seaside and enjoy a fish dinner or a traditional Greek meal. Stroll on the beach as your 48 hours in Greece come to an end.

I am yet to visit Greece, but I'm pretty sure that when I finally do, I will be filled with a longing to come back over and over again. I'm pretty sure there are always incredible things to see and explore here.

It’s summer and in the Philippines, it means that it’s that time of the year when temperatures as well as the humidity begin to skyrocket. It’s also a time when the sun’s heat is—a lot of times—too much to bear. Many leave the city to escape the, say, annoyances of summer. During this time, Tagaytay becomes one of the most popular tourist destinations in the Philippines, particularly those who are from the country’s capital, Manila.

Around 60 kilometers or a two-hour drive from Manila, Tagaytay offers an ideal combination of high elevation and lush vegetation that is unsurprisingly flocked by many who want to enjoy summer without spending too much time traveling. It is perfect for people looking for a good alternative for Baguio City, the summer capital of the Philippines.

Here are some of the attractions to visit when in Tagaytay:

Taal Volcano

Taal Volcano, the second most active volcano in the country, is definitely one of the top tourist attractions in Tagaytay. It is famous for its huge crater and hilly sides that go into the Taal Lake. There are two ways to enjoy it: seeing it from afar or hiking to its crater. Whatever your preference is, a trip to Taal Volcano is going to be worth it.

Café Veranda

Café Veranda at Taal Vista is considered by many as Tagaytay’s hidden tourism gem. You can enjoy a sumptuous dinner and enjoy a cultural show. The performers usually do three sets. Plus, the service is splendid and the staff are attentive to the needs of its customers.

Museo Orlina

Museo Orlina is an art gallery, art exhibition center, amphitheater, and music theater that are rolled into one facility. If you’re in luck, you can indulge in a music festival that is packed with a full line-up of local artists. Other times, you can also find street art stalls. It is a must-visit if you’re a culture vulture who has knack for arts.

Picnic Grove

Within close proximity of the Our Lady of Manaoag Church, the Picnic Grove is a laid-back and picturesque place for individuals who want to enjoy exceptional views. They can also go kite flying, horseback riding, cable car riding, and zip lining. There are also restaurants and

shopping centers for pasalubong items.

Puzzle Mansion Bed and Breakfast

If you’re traveling with kids, then you should consider including the Puzzle Mansion Bed and Breakfast in your itinerary. In 2012, the Puzzle Mansion won an award for having the biggest collection of jigsaw puzzles in the world. While there, you can enjoy its extensive collection of configured puzzles that include those of Winnie the Pooh and Piglet, 3D puzzles, etc. There is also a huge blue pool in the back area that you can use if you decide to check-in.

Cagayan de Oro City | A 7-Hour Day Tour

We recently had a quick trip to Cagayan de Oro City. We left Iligan at about 11:00 am and we're back home at around 10:00pm. Travel time is roughly two hours each way, leaving us seven hours to enjoy the City of Golden Friendship.

How to Enjoy Cagayan de Oro if You Only Have 7 hours

With the limited time we had, we only had 3 stops, with the first stop near the airport, which is technically outside CdeO.

Lunch at Lohas Hotel

We had our lunch at Coco Mango Cafe and Resto in Laguindingan, Misamis Oriental. Food tastes good, but to be honest, service leaves much to be desired. Service was slow, and the soup was served last. But as you can see in the video, serving size was okay and we finished everything 😉.

Then we had a quick tour in Lohas Hill Homes and Business Park, a mixed-use development over a slightly rolling terrain along the National Highway. Some areas are still under construction, but we were able to check out the infinity pool.

Coffee Break at Hugo Skye Lounge / Sierra Del Oro

Next stop was at Sierra del Oro in Indahag, Cagayan de Oro. We had coffee at Sierr-a-cup while enjoying the beautiful view of the city.

Road Trip with #TeamPrada: Luzon Edition

Road trips with the family are always fun. Imagine traveling through Luzon with three families, it will undoubtedly be one to remember! A 5-day road trip to Luzon, the northern part of the Philippines, was definitely one for the books. Fourteen people, three families, five days = countless stories.

A little while back, together with three families from ze mother's side a.k.a. #TeamPrada, we embarked on a road trip to Northern Luzon. We started our journey in Nueva Ecija, the host family's abode. We spent a day in Baler, Aurora and then traveled to Ilocos Sur, Ilocos Norte, Baguio, and then back to home base in Nueva Ecija. Day 1: Baler, Aurora

Ronquillo Balete Eco-Park

Although technically not part of Baler, Ronquillo Balete Eco-Park, locally known as “Millenium Tree" in Brgy Quirino, Maria Aurora, Aurora is often a part of Baler day tour.

Bay-ler View Hotel and Restaurant

Had a quick milkshake break, then enjoyed an afternoon stroll by the beach. And of course, Baler isn't Baler without surfing.

Day 2: Vigan, Ilocos Sur

St. Paul's Cathedral

We started our Vigan tour by visiting the church - to thank the Lord for His traveling mercies and admire the cathedral's architecture.

Plaza Salcedo

Right in front of the St Paul's Cathedral is Plaza Salcedo, where we enjoyed a quiet stroll and took lots and lots of photos.

Calle Crisologo

A Vigan City tour would never be complete without visiting the renowned Calle Crisologo. It's a major attraction that takes you back to Philippine Spanish colonial time.

We spent the night at Ergo Hotel and left early the next day to explore Ilocos Norte.

Day 3: Ilocos Norte

Ferdinand Marcos Presidential Center, Batac

Batac, Ilocos Norte is known by its moniker, "Home of the Great Leaders." Batac has earned this title because of three prominent figures - Former President Ferdinand E. Marcos, Bishop Gregorio Aglipay, and General Artemio Ricarte. We dropped by the Ferdinand E Marcos Presidential Center, which houses a large collection of Marcos Memorabilia.

Paoay Church

And then we were off to San Agustin Church or more popularly known as Paoay Church. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the church is definitely one of the oldest and most beautiful churches in the Philippines.

Tip: Afternoon is the best time to visit for better lighting. 😀

Paoay Sand Dunes

A little farther north and we found ourselves at Paoay Sand Dunes.

The 'millennial' kids went sandboarding (or some version thereof).

But who says only the 'kids' get to enjoy such adventures and that the titos and titas are left on the sidelines? Not the #TeamPrada! Our titos and titas jumped with us into a couple of 4x4's to an adventure of a lifetime. 😎

Kapurpurawan Rock Formation, Burgos

The last stop of the day is at the creamy white rock formation of Kapurpurawan, which got its name from the Ilocano word "puraw" which literally translates to "white."

We ended our Ilocos Norte exploration at Burgos, Ilocos Norte. We opted not to push it farther to Bangui and Pagudpud, as we are set to spend the night in Baguio City.

Day 4: Baguio City

La Trinidad Strawberry Farm

Because of #ForevermoreFeels of the titas, we visited La Trinidad, about 3 kilometers from Baguio City proper. We imagined picking the freshest strawberries, but it wasn't harvest season. 😞

So we just enjoyed strawberry ice-cream "pang-Instagram" and well, because it also promised to be yummy.

Baguio Botanical Garden

We also roamed around Baguio Botanical Garden.

Camp John Hay

Stopped by Camp John Hay for lunch...

and coffee...

and more #Forevermore feels. 😂

Burnham Park

Final stop before leaving Baguio City is of course, Burnham Park!

And because #ForevermoreFeels is real, we just HAVE TO visit the famous Sitio La Presa! 😅

No strawberries still. Only lots and lots of marble potatoes sold at Php 10 per kilo!

Day 5: San Jose, Nueva Ecija

Just like that, we're back to our home base in Luzon!

Day 5 was spent pasalubong shopping before heading back to Manila for our flight back to Mindanao.
