Beware, when booking your cabin, ask your travel agent not to have you anywhere near the laundry. You’ll avoid extra heat in your cabin from the dryers, plus the extra noise from people going in & out to use the washing machines.

While cruise ships are not comprehensive medical facilities, cruise lines understand that some people may have health needs during a cruise. Thus they are committed to providing first response and emergency care to guests until they can be transferred to a shore side medical facility. Most cruise lines have 24-hour medical services and staff operating under guidelines developed in conjunction with the American College of Emergency Physicians (AECP). Cruise lines and travel agents encourage vacationers to obtain medical insurance, travel with adequate supplies of medical prescriptions and devices and to disclose pre-existing medical conditions before sailing.

Are there different types of cruises?

There are cruises designed to suit virtually every interest and personal preference.

The choices include: boutique, luxury cruises with globetrotting itineraries; large, contemporary ships with a fantastic array of recreational facilities; classic vessels evoking the time-honored traditions of cruising; special interest or exploration cruises specializing in unique destinations with an accent on cultural enrichment; river voyages into the heart of a destination.

There are cruise lines that feature soft adventure expeditions to such unique frontiers as Antarctica, the Amazon Rain Forest or the African Serengeti. Or, discover historical legacies closer to home with enlightening itineraries to New England, French Canada, Colonial America, and America’s Rivers.

For experienced travelers, destination-focused cruises specialize in culturally-rich ports of call with itineraries dedicated to illuminating such historic, world-class treasures as the antiquities of classical Greece, the Polynesian paradise of Hawaii, the fabled splendor of Norwegian fjords or the castles and museums of Europe’s rivers.

For many, the perfect vacation includes the non-stop fun and sun of a tropical resort-style cruise to the Caribbean, where you can sample a variety of island cultures and cuisines while relaxing your cares away. Plus, many cruise lines create special “themes” on board, with entertainment ranging from jazz festivals and classical music concerts to golf clinics and murder mysteries at sea!

So you ‘sea’ cruises do offer something for everyone & for every budget!

I love to go a wandering
Along the mountain track
And as I go, I love to sing
My backpack on my back.

val di ree, val di rah, val di ree
val di ra ha ha ha ha ha
val di ree val di rah
My backpack on my back.

I sang that song as a child as I wandered through life and where ever my family’s travels took us. I still often travel with a knapsack on my back as my carry on!

As I travel around the world or around town and see people with back packs on, this song will instantly come to my mind. Do you have musical scores playing in your head as you travel about in your everyday life or on a great adventure?

I do all the time & from many different genre’s of music, like the song ‘Sunrise, Sunset’. I tend to hum that melody while watching a beautiful day come to a close with a spectacular sunset on the horizon.

‘Raindrops keep falling on my head’ can be heard from me or ‘Singing in the rain’ on days of cloudy grey & rain. My life is made up of music and the memories it evokes. I am often reminded of a special journey I’ve taken when songs come on the radio or play on my iPod. I can close my eyes, listen to the song and it transports me back to so many special places that I have tucked away in my memories but are forever linked to me by a song.

What songs hold travel memories for you?

There are many good samaritans in the world. No matter where you travel you will find people who are happy to help you. So make it easy for someone to help you while you travel. Before any travel you take do something to protect your cell phone if you loose it while you are traveling.

Write on a note pad a message like this:

If lost, please call (give home or work number, not the cell phone you lost) in the USA. I will pay for shipping for its return.
Thank You.

Take a picture of this note and make it your main screen while you travel. So if you lose you phone, even if it is locked, they can read your message and call you to make arrangements to get your phone back!

Also remember to lock your phone while you travel to protect your personal information you’ve stored in it.

If you travel often with the one you love here is list of the most romantic places to steal a kiss from your someone special…

1. Ellis Islands kissing post – New York

2. Kiribati – the first island that sits on the international date line. Great place to plan to visit New Years Eve.

3. The Rodin Museum – Recreate a scene from the sculpture ‘The Kiss’

4. The stone kissing bench at Syracuse University , NY. Legend says if you kiss on this bench, you end up married to each other.

5. The Bridge of Sighs, Venice, Italy – According to Italian superstition, kiss your sweetheart on a gondola at sunset under this 17th-century bridge, and you’ll be guaranteed eternal love.

6. The Santa Monica Pier Ferris Wheel, Santa Monica, CA – What a thrill to kiss on a Ferris wheel! While at the very top, enjoy the panoramic views of Los Angeles and the ocean.

7. LOVERS POINT, Pacific Grove, CA – Head here at theN crack of dawn and share a morning kiss; because it faces east, it’s one of the only spots on the west coast where you watch the sun rise over the water.

8. JULIET’S BALCONY, Verona, Italy – Shakespeare’s star-crossed sweethearts declared undying love for one another here. Kiss beneath the balcony before parting, with such sweet sorrow.

9. THE EMPIRE STATE BUILDING, New York, NY – Salute Sleepless in Seattle (or have your own Affair to Remember) by making a pilgrimage to this New York landmark. (Our advice: Skip rush hour and make a late-night trip to the top—you can go as late as 1:15am.)

10. THE KISSING BRIDGE, Woolwich, Ontario, Canada – This rickety covered bridge might not look like much, but the dreamy light inside earned it its name. It was originally built in 1881 and is Ontario’s last remaining covered bridge.

11. ALLEY OF THE KISS, Guanajuato, Mexico – Two lovers living on opposite sides of this slender alley once perished side-by-side here; since then, locals have allegedly spotted their ghosts smooching on the balconies. Today, local lore says that couples who kiss on the third step in the alley will be rewarded with years of happiness.

NOTE:
If you have any suggestions of romantic places to kiss around the world let me know the name, location & why and I’ll update my list.

When your travel is over there still may be things you must be aware of, such as there are several countries that have an exit fee that can be only paid at your departure. These fees are required and the local personnel will not care if you didn’t know of the fees – you still must pay them or you will be denied exit until they are. Don’t haggle, these fees are non negotiable and you can be fined even more for arguing or causing issues. These are unavoidable, so be prepared before you get ready to depart make sure you have this ready for when you arrive at your departure site such as the airport, boarder office etc.

Be Prepared. On arrival in the United States, have your passport ready when you go through immigration and customs. If you have the paperwork required, make sure it is completed before you get into line – it will help reduce the wait for you and others trying to clear customs.

Keep receipts for any items you purchased abroad. U.S. citizens may bring back and orally declare $400 worth of merchandise duty free. The next $1000 is taxed at a flat rate of 10%. Check with U.S. Customs for further information.

Don’t Joke.Don’t make jokes about things like drugs, bombs, hidden weapons etc. The security personnel in customs take every sentence and every action very serious for your safety. Playing around or kidding by making bombs exploding noises, pantomiming like you are taking out a gun will be highly suspicious and you will be regarded as a threat. If you do choose to avoid this advice be aware there are heavy fines that can and will be filed against you and you could be arrested as well.

Currency. There is no limit on the amount of money or negotiable instruments which can be brought into or taken out of the United States. However, any amount over $10,000 must be reported to U.S. Customs on Customs Form 4790 when you depart from or enter into the United States.

Foreign Produce. Don’t bring home any fresh fruits or vegetables. Such items will be confiscated.

Tips on Packing for your next cruise

Packing for a cruise is no easy task. I used to leave packing until the last minute. The night before my cruise, I would throw virtually every dress and pair of sandals I own into a suitcase. This seemed to work until one cruise I was forced to wear my bathing suit more that I’d like to admit. In an effort to never have that happen again, I created a list of tips/reminders to keep in mind before heading on my next cruise:

Pack more than dresses

Dresses are comfortable, but sometimes it’s nice to also have tee- shirts to wear when you want a little protection from the sun or when it gets a little chilly out. I came across a company called Del Soul that specialized in cruise wear. They make really cool tee- shirts, nail polish and dresses that change colors in the sun. My daughter loved my resort wear so much that I bought her some of her own. The technology behind the tee- shirts is pretty cool. The shirts use a special type of color that is made up of color- changing molecules. Just like when a flower blooms once it’s exposed to UV rays, the molecules on the clothes twist and unfold and revel different colors. On a cruise when you are going in and out of sunlight, Del Soul’s cruise wear are fun to wear because colors are constantly changing.

Bring Non- Slip Foot Wear

Rubber sandals or other types of footwear that won’t cause you to slip are key to bring on cruises. I’ve made the mistake of bringing my cute strappy sandals that provide no support on cruises before and I’ve unfortunately been condemned to hanging out by the pool. If you are like me and like to walk around and check out all the activities on the cruise then having some solid footwear is key. I even bring running shoes so I can participate in activities like scavenger hunts, mini- golf and zip- lining.

Communication is better with walkies- talkies

Cruise ships seem to keep getting larger and larger which makes it harder to keep track of one another. Walkies- talkies are great when you are in the middle of the ocean without any cell service. Teenagers are old enough to explore the ship with their siblings and you’ll want them to especially when you’re on the relax program. Some cruises will even rent them to your family for the duration of the cruise.

Keep your things dry with Zip- lock baggies

Zip- lock bags are multi- purposeful. You can stash your wet baiting suit in large zip- lock bags to keep your other dry clean clothes safe. You can also use them to keep your camera and cell phone dry and sand free. They are good place to keep your cash, band aids, sun tan lotion and anything else that you don’t want to get damaged by the sand or water.

Some other things you’ll want to remember are sun tan lotion, a hat, beverages, snacks and extra storage for small rooms. Oh, and always pack your underwear first!

Help yourself prevent theft by carrying your belongings securely. Carry purses tucked under an arm and not dangling by a strap. Carry valuables hidden in an inside front pocket or in a money belt, not in a hip pocket. You may wish to wrap your wallet with rubber bands to make it more difficult for someone to slip it from your pocket unnoticed. Money belts or pouches that fit around your shoulder, waist or under clothing are available through some luggage shops and department stores. There are some shirts now that have a pocket that sits about mid of your abdomen. These shirts pockets have a Velcro or zipper closure so items cant fall out.

Do not sightsee overseas with your passport on your possession, it is best to keep it locked in the hotel safe. Your passport is the most valuable document you carry abroad. It confirms that you are an American citizen. Do not carry your passport in the same place as your money or pack it in your luggage. Remember to keep your passport number in a separate location in case it is lost or stolen. In some countries, you may be required to leave your passport overnight or for several days with the hotel management. This may be local practice–do not be concerned unless the passport is not returned as promised. If your passport is lost or stolen abroad, immediately report it to the local police, obtain a copy of the report, and contact the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate to apply for a new passport.

Get a walking license. Instead of carrying your driving license get a walking license and use that while sightseeing. This will also protect your regular ID but you’ll have a form of identification in the case of an emergency. You can obtain a walking license at your local DMV.

While it is hard to know what surfaces have been infected with germs from other people and travelers. There are a few simple things you can do to try to stay germ free as much as possible.

Invest in a box of the disposable santi-free wipes. You can use them on your hands but also on items like the remote control in a hotel room, the door handle of you ship cabin, the upright tray table on a plane & the arm of the chairs in the airport waiting areas.. They are small and you can easily throw them away.

Pack a small 2.5 oz bottle of the hand sanitizer in your purse or back pack to always have some available when you go out to eat in a resurant, club or cafe.

Wash your hands in hot water if available and use a paper towel to open the door of a restroom (just to be safe).

If in a foreign land, do not get ice with your drink. Ask for a refrigerated drink but no ice. Often even if the ice is made by a machine, many times it is not filtered. It is always better to be safe than sorry.

Street vendors offer delicious tidbits with local flavor to try. Eat the items that have been cook especially for you – do not choose one laying out for many vendors in 2nd and 3rd world countries do not have refrigeration. Heated items as long as cooked all the way through should kill any bacteria etc.. Stay away from unwashed vegetables and meats if there is no refrigeration – could cause you serious illness.

Bring a small pack of tissues. they will always come in handy to use.

Most of these items you use and throw away, so there is a bit extra space in your luggage for one more extra special gift just for yourself.

1. Make sure you have a signed, valid passport (and visas, if required). Also, before you go, fill in the emergency information page of your passport!

2 Read the Consular Information Sheets (and Public Announcements or Travel Warnings, if applicable) for the countries you plan to visit. (See “Consular Information Program” section for more details.)

3. Familiarize yourself with local laws and customs of the countries to which you are traveling. Remember, the U.S. Constitution does not follow you! While in a foreign country, you are subject to its laws.

4. Make 2 copies of your passport identification page. This will facilitate replacement if your passport is lost or stolen. Leave one copy at home with friends or relatives. Carry the other with you in a separate place from your passport.

5. Leave a copy of your itinerary with family or friends at home so that you can be contacted in case of an emergency.

6. Do not leave your luggage unattended in public areas. Do not accept packages from strangers.

7. If you plan to stay abroad for more than two weeks, upon arrival you should notify by phone or register in person with the U.S. embassy in the country you are visiting. This will facilitate communication in case someone contacts the embassy looking for you.

8. To avoid being a target of crime, try not to wear conspicuous clothing and expensive jewelry and do not carry excessive amounts of money or unnecessary credit cards.

9. In order to avoid violating local laws, deal only with authorized agents when you exchange money or purchase art or antiques.

10. If you get into trouble, contact the nearest U.S. embassy.

For more assistance go to the US State department website http://travel.state.gov

It is a good idea to apply 3 months before you plan to travel. If you also need visas, allow more time as you must have a valid passport before applying for a visa. If this is your first passport, you must apply in person, bringing with you proof of U.S. citizenship (usually a certified copy of your birth certificate, previous U.S. passport, a naturalization certificate, or a Consular Report of Birth Abroad); 2 identical recent front-view photos (2″ x 2″); a completed passport application (Form DSP-11); proof of identity, such as a valid drivers license or other photo or physical-description I.D.; and the appropriate fee for a passport valid for 10 years.

You may apply at any passport agency (see list at the end of this pamphlet) or at one of the many clerks of court or post offices designated to accept passport applications. Your birth certificate or other documents will be returned to you by mail, along with your new passport.

You may be eligible to apply for a passport by mail. If you have had a passport issued within the past 12 years and you are able to mail that passport with your application, you can use Form DSP-82, “Application for Passport by Mail,” to apply. Obtain this form from any office that accepts passport applications or from your travel agent. Follow the instructions on the back of the form.

If you are leaving on an emergency trip within two weeks, apply in person at the nearest passport agency and present your tickets and itinerary from an airline, as well as the other required items. Or, apply at a court or post office and arrange to have the application sent to the passport agency through an overnight delivery service of your choice. (You should also include a self-addressed, pre-paid envelope for the return of the passport by express mail.) Be sure to include your dates of departure, travel plans on your application and all appropriate fees (including the $35 expedite fee).

When you receive your passport, be sure to sign it on page 1 and to pencil in on page 4 the requested information. This will help us notify your family or friends in case of an accident or other emergency. Do not designate your traveling companion as the person to be notified in case of an emergency.

Many countries require a visa–an endorsement or stamp placed in your passport by a foreign government that permits you to visit that country for a specified purpose and a limited time. A number of countries require you to obtain a visa from the embassy or consular office nearest to your residence. The addresses of foreign consular offices can be found in telephone directories of large cities or in the Congressional Directory, available in most libraries; or you may write to the appropriate embassy in Washington, D.C. and request the address of their consulate that is nearest to you. You can also obtain the Department of State booklet, Foreign Entry Requirements, which lists visa and other entry requirements and locations of all foreign embassies and consulates in the U.S. To order this booklet see page 11. Apply for your visa directly to the embassy or consulate of each country you plan to visit or ask your travel agent to assist you with visas. U.S. passport agencies cannot obtain visas for you.

An increasing number of countries are establishing entry requirements regarding AIDS testing, particularly for long-term residents and students. Check with the embassy or consulate of the countries you plan to visit for the latest information.

We all want to bring home unique and fascinating items from our travels, but there are some things that you should bypass purchasing. Beware of purchasing souvenirs made from endangered wildlife. Many wildlife and wildlife products are prohibited either by U.S. or foreign laws from import into the United States. You risk confiscation and a possible fine if you attempt to import such things. Watch out for and avoid purchasing the following prohibited items:

All products made from sea turtles.

All ivory, both Asian and African.

Furs from spotted cats.

Furs from marine mammals.

Feathers and feather products from wild birds.

All live or stuffed birds from Australia, Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Guatemala, Mexico, Paraguay, Venezuela, and some Caribbean countries.

Most crocodile and caiman leather.

Most coral, whether in chunks or in jewelry.

When traveling Internationally, there are many places that you may choose to travel to that have immunization requirements. Information on immunizations and health precautions for travelers can be obtained from local health departments, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s international travelers hotline at (404) 332-4559, private doctors, or travel clinics. General guidance can also be found in the U.S. Public Health Service book, Health Information for International Travel. Immunizations are normally recommended against diptheria, tetanus, polio, typhoid, and hepatitis A for travelers. Generally, these immunizations are administered during childhood.

There may be local health clinics in your area that provide shots for travel overseas for far less than a private doctors office. If you cant find out if there is one in your area ask your travel agent.

If you require medication, bring an ample supply in its original containers. Do not use pill cases. Because of strict laws concerning narcotics throughout the world, bring along copies of your prescriptions and, if possible, carry a letter from your physician explaining your need for the drug. As an extra precaution, carry the generic names of your medications with you because pharmaceutical companies overseas may use different names from those used in the United States.

If for some reason your medications are lost or stolen, you can get them replaced. If you are traveling in the USA contact your pharmacy and ask them to send an emergency supply to a pharmacy close to where you are staying. Before calling make sure you have the local stores information. When gathering information about the local store don’t forget to get the fax number. Many times your pharmacy will have to provide proof of the prescription.

Another precaution – DO NOT pack your Meds in your checked luggage! If your bags get lost or stolen you don’t have to worry about the medicine. It is always best to bring the medicine in your carry on bag.

Plus, if you are traveling with a liquid medicine such as cough medicine or children’s medicine. Enclose these in a zip lock baggie in case of spillage. Also when going through the TSA security line, take the liquid medicine out and put it into the bin with your shoes, purse etc.

When traveling you want to be comfortable, no matter what mode of transportation you’ve chosen be it plane, train or automobile. The recommended type of clothing to give you the maximum amount of comfort and protection are clothes made out of natural fibers such as cotton or wool.

These types of clothes will let your body breath, they can be layered for warmth, will absorb moisture best and they are very comfortable. Man made clothes such as synthetics, do the opposite in most cases, they tend to restrain your movements when cotton can stretch. Most importantly cloths made with synthetics can actually cause you harm. Such as in the case of an accident, if you are wearing clothes made of polyester, Lycra etc. they can actually melt and burn you. Of course that is the extreme situation, but in most cases synthetic clothes do cause chaffing & rashes, restrict air flow & so moisture is not absorbed away from your body, which can cause discomfort as well.

This is not a suggestion to completely do away with all non-natural fiber clothes you have – just a suggestion next time you travel put on a favorite pair of jeans (made of cotton), add a shirt of cotton or linen, grab a wool sweater or jeans jacket . While you are traveling you’ll feel so much more comfortable. For shoes I suggest a pair of suede or leather slip on shoes (best when going thru TSA lines).

A trip is so much more fun when you arrive at the start rested and feeling comfortable from your trip. Wearing natural fiber clothing is just a small way to help you achieve that.

Congratulations you’ve become engaged! Now is the time of deciding so many decisions – the dress, the flowers, the venue, catering and so much more. Cunard Cruise Lines has made those and other decisions easier for you. Have you thought about getting married on a cruise ship? Thinking about getting married on a Cunard ship? It’ll cost you at least $2,500, not including a $575 fee for a marriage license.

The U.K.-based Cunard Cruise Lines, which had previously announced, is rolling out a weddings at sea program this year for the first time in its 172-year history.

Cunard says it will kick off the weddings program in April on all three of its ships, the Queen Mary 2, Queen Elizabeth and Queen Victoria. Just one wedding will be scheduled per day and only on voyages of seven nights or longer, the line adds.

Cunard says its basic Wedding Package will include a ceremony conducted by the ship’s captain, traditional wedding music, a bellman escorting the bride(if needed), floral arrangements, Veuve Clicquot champagne and a one-tier wedding cake. The line will offer additional “finishing touches” such as an accompaniment by the ship’s harpist or an option for a more elaborate multi-tier cake for an extra charge. Wedding lunches and dinners in ship lounges and restaurants also can be arranged. The average cost of a wedding in the USA ranges between $10,000.00 – $40,000.00

Cunard states that each of its ships will have an on-board wedding coordinator to help while each couple is on board before their ceremonies.
