Maine Huts & Trails was the brainchild of Larry Warren in the 1970’s. His vision was for a series of backcountry huts allowing for multi-day cross-country ski trips from Moosehead Lake to the Mahoosuc Mountain Range. What that became is four off-the-grid huts along an 80 mile trail system.

While off-the-grid the huts do have nice amenities including solar power feeding batteries, hydro power in one hut, wood heat, composting toilets and more. Kitchen facilities are available during self-service seasons (Fall – November & December, and Winter) while during full-service seasons (Summer and Fall – September & October) breakfast, lunch, trail bag lunch, dinner and beer and wine to purchase are available.

Activities available along the hut/trail system include:

• Mountain biking (fatbiking in winter)
• Bird watching
• Fly fishing
• Hiking
• Paddling
• Swimming
• Cross country skiing
• Snowshoeing

The DaPonte String Quartet

Maine is celebrating its bicentennial in 2020. To help celebrate the occasion the DaPonte String Quartet joined by guest artist Eric LaPerna will be performing a program Maine’s 200th:  Music of Early Maine that highlights significant events along Maine’s pre-statehood timeline (from the 16th to the early 19th centuries) .

The concerts will be held in March and April as follows:

• Portland  – Maine Jewish Museum – Thursday, Mar 19th @ 7pm

Rangeley’s annual World Record Snowmobile Ride to benefit the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation will be held tomorrow, Saturday, February 15, 2020. Rochester Main Street will be hosting their first annual Fire & Ice Cocktail Party starting at 5:30 PM on February 27, 2020 at the Rochester Performing Arts Center at 32 North Main Street. The festivities will include:

Memphremagog Winter Swim Festival
This one is for the hardcore. They have to cut lanes in the ice to allow the 85 swimmers to participate in the Memphremagog Winter Swim Festival. Held February 28 through March 1, 2020.

Annual Sugarbush Dog Parade
The 10th Annual Sugarbush Dog Parade will be held on February 22, 2020 at 3 PM (registration 2 PM) at the Sugarbush Ski Resort in Warren, VT.

Valentine’s Day Candlelit Snowshoe
How about a romantic candlelit snowshoe adventure for Valentines day? You can find just that in East Charleston, VT at the NorthWoods Stewardship Center. A warm fire and live music to follow in the lodge after the trek.

Torchlight Parade and Dance
Suicide Six in South Pomfret, VT will hold a Torchlight Parade on February 15, 2020 after sunset with dancing in the lodge. The event is free to all.

The New Hampshire Farm, Forest and Garden Expo
The New Hampshire Farm, Forest and Garden Expo will be held February 14 (9 AM to 7 PM) and 15 (9 Am to 4 PM), 2020 at the DoubleTree by Hilton Manchester Downtown in Manchester, NH. Admission is $7 and kids under 13 are free.

Maple Sugaring Intensive for Adults
This maple sugaring program at the Prescott Farm Environmental Education Center in Laconia, NH on February 22, 2020 will teach you the basics of making maple syrup. The event is $25 for non-members and $15 for members.

17th Annual Ice Harvest
Also on February 22, 2020 the Remick Country Doctor Museum & Farm in Tamworth, NH will hold its annual ice harvest. Fees are $10 for adults, $5 for children ages 5 to 10 and free for children 4 and under.
