It took six years, but the National Park Service and the Access Fund, an organization that represents the interests of an estimated 1.6 million climbers, have signed a memorandum of understanding to work together. On its face the 6-page document seems fairly straightforward in spelling out the responsibilities of both the NPS and the Access Fund over the life of the 5-year-agreement. In short, the two agree to work together to provide climbing opportunities in the National Park System.
[Read Comments]

There was soul in New York, rock in Washington, D.C.,blues in Chicago,folk-country in Nashville, jazz in New Orleans, weird dance rock in Austin, Texas, and weird circus music in Albuquerque. One genre I have avoided like a pounding jackhammer to the chest is techno. I managed to dodge the hyper dance scene in El Paso, Texas, but in the Las Vegas Strip area, theres nowhere to run.
[Read Comments]

Even with cheap flights and hotel rates, Paris can be an expensive place. But, you have to go at least once … preferably as often as possible. So, I was pretty psyched to see the new deal from the Hotel Jules, a pretty stylish place in the 9th Arrondissement. Through the end of the year, the hotel is offering two nights, daily breakfast (continental or in-room) and a two-day pass for two people that gets you access to the city’s major museums.
[Read Comments]

Four decades after making it difficult to get a drink, Utah realizes that buying liquor involves spending, too. Last week, the state decided to allow liquor to be sold to anyone with a valid form of ID. For the past 40 years, getting a drink has involved becoming a member of a private club – which required an application and a fee.
[Read Comments]

As hard and as much work as it’s been, there are definitely things we’ve come to like about this thing we’ve come to call home throughout each long, hot, fun day of hiking and touring the national parks of the West.
Petunias, pique and Roman temperament: Look out below

The first thing I did when I moved into an apartment in the Monti district of Rome last spring was to put in window boxes. My landlady installed the holders, and I chose the plants: pink and red petunias, plus a little basil for cooking. Later I stuck in an avocado seed just to see if it would grow. It’s hard to believe how happy it made me to watch the little guys bloom. Of course, I had to water profusely, because plants need it in the hot summer sun of Rome.
[Read Comments]
