The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is mooting making installation of windmills mandatory, just like rainwater harvesting, for certain categories of properties, initially.

"Looking at the power crisis, it will be beneficial if all high-rises start generating energy from wind. If investing in solar and wind energy and rain harvesting are made mandatory, a lot can be achieved," said Mayor D. Venkatesh Murthy during a discussion with the members of the Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FKCCI) in Bangalore on Friday.

'No coordination'

The Mayor conceded there was lack of coordination among various civic agencies, including the BBMP, Bangalore Development Authority (BDA), Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) and the Bangalore Electricity Supply Company (Bescom).

He pegged this as the reason for the state the city finds itself in.

Business licences

Responding to a long-pending demand of the business community, the Mayor announced doing away with the annual system of renewing trade licences, which will henceforth be called business certificates and will be valid for three or five years.

When a FKCCI member raised the issue, Mr. Murthy said business certificates would be issued online similar to the system proposed for khata, and birth and death certificates.

"Instead of trade licences, we have called them business certificates. They can be renewed every three years or five years instead of [annually]," he said, while stating that it is not possible to abolish them as it entailed a law amendment. Among the other projects in the pipeline are construction of 500 toilets across the city and multi-level parking facilities, especially near Namma Metro stations.

Ruing BBMP's lack of real power, he said it had to approach the State government for everything. Also, the Mayor's yearlong tenure is inadequate for any real achievement.

Mr. Murthy spoke about areas that are yet to be converted into revenue layouts, due to which they still come under the agriculture zone. "In the name of development, it has become unauthorised Bangalore," he commented.

Karithode waterfalls

The Karithode waterfalls in the tenth ward of Udumbanchola gram panchayat in Idukki district mesmerises visitors. The falls, less steep when compared to other waterfalls, have three layers which are stretched over an area of more than 350 feet. The top of the falls can be reached easily.

It is a hidden treasure for nature lovers who want to spend time away from the routine life. The area may not offer the best facilities; but there are many regular visitors who choose the spot for its offbeat charm. The stream is in full strength, owing to the monsoon, and local people say that the fall is near full strength for almost seven months. Even during the summer, people visit the place to bathe in the falls.

The Parathode river's name is being changed to Karithode falls, whose beauty lies in its three-layer flow.

Karithode water fall near Nedumbkandam in Idukki district:

This water fall is 13 km from Nedumkandam on the Munnar-Thekkady route. Considering its tourism potential, the Nedumkandam gram panchayat had constructed a 10-km-road, though the rest of it is in a not motorable. This does not stop the trekkers who visit the falls.

With the completion of the construction work of the Mavady-Perinchamkutty road, the falls will become a potential tourism spot, says Unni, a local resident.

He said that the residents in the area have submitted a proposal to the panchayat to make a motorable road upto the waterfall. The waterfall could be developed as a stop-over for tourists visiting Munnar and Thekkady.

Though other tourism spots are identified for development, Karithode remains a hidden spot that is not mentioned in the long list of lesser known tourism places in the district.

Earlier, there was a proposal to make it a mini hydropower unit. Though 12 acres of land covering the water fall had been acquired for the project and fenced in 2006, no follow-up action was taken. Once it is developed as a hydropower station, it will become inaccessible to visitors and so, the local people want to keep its natural beauty intact.

The name 'Bellary' has been derived from the name 'Balari' which refers to none other than Goddess Durga herself.   Bellary is known mainly for its forts and rock formations. Rocks and hills of granite form a prominent feature of the landscape of Bellary. The town stands around two hills made of granite- the Ballari Gudda and the Kumbara Gudda. As a result, a number of quarries have been established here. Bellary is also the hometown of Hampi, the world-famous heritage site.

Bellary actually has references in the Ramayana. Bellary also played a prominent part during the age of the Satavahanas, the Kadambas, the Sevunas, the Hoysalas etc. Following the defeat of the Vijayanagara Empire in the 16th century, the city fell to ruin.

Today, the town thrives mainly on agriculture - vast fields of cotton, jowar, groundnut, paddy and sunflower form an integral part of the landscape here. The black cotton soil here is distinctive.

The Bellary Fort was built by Hanumappa Nayaka during the age of the Vijayanagara Empire. The fort was later renovated by Hyder Ali with the help of a French Engineer who also added a lower fort.   The Engineer was later hanged as the Fort turned out to be lower than the nearby Kumbara Gudda thus compromising on its privacy and safety. The Upper Fort is a walled structure on the summit with only one approach. There is a citadel at the top here which is guarded by three lines of fortification. Several cisterns carved in rock can be found here.   There is a small temple as well here beside pools of water.

The lower fort has two entrances – a temple dedicated to Hanuman can be found outside the eastern gates of the lower fort. A protestant church, an orphanage, a Masonic lodge, a post office and several other buildings were added to the main building later.

Ambali is known for its black stone Chalukyan temple where the deity is Kalleswari. Mellara is a temple dedicated to Shiva in the form of Mallara. The temple is most famous for its annual festival. The Thungabhadra dam is also an interesting site to visit, with a garden attached to it. The Ramanadurga is a hill station situated amongst a group of granite hills. The hill also has a temple dedicated to Ramadeva.

Like most of its neighbors, Aihole too has a magnificent past. In its heyday, the city abounded with architectural wonders - palaces, temples and much more, the conglomeration of the tastes of the numerous rulers and dynasties that came and went. What remain today are the ruins of what once was. Even then, there are around hundred temples scattered all over, each rivaling the others in beauty and workmanship. It is rightly said of Aihole - wherever you turn, a temple meets your eye.

Sitting pretty on the banks of the Malaprabha River, Aihole was part of the Chalukyan Empire for a long while when most of the constructions happened. Later the Rashtrakuras invaded Aihole, followed by the Bahamanis. Aurangzeb annexed the territory along with many others in the 17th centuries.

Aihole is composed of temple complexes, some of them housing nearly a hundred shrines under one roof. The temples were built in two sets, one during the 6th and 7th centuries and the other during the 12th and 13th centuries.

The Galgantha set of temples, for example, are distinctive in that they all have a curved 'shikhara' above the Garbagriha, with images of Ganga and Yamuna adorning the entrance. The Ravani Phadi cave temple is also unique; it stands by itself, carved on a rocky hill.

The oldest of the temples of Aihole is the Lad khan temple, belonging to the Kontigudi set.   Look out for the Vimana carved on the roof while you are in Lad Khan temple. The windows here are all latticed, in stone, displaying influences of Northern India. The architecture of the Durga temple is also bound to leave you gaping. The temple is an elaborate affair, composed of plinths and galleries, all covered with carvings. The main deity here is of Chamundi Devi which is depicted as trampling the Narasmiha.

The Suryanarayana temple has an icon of Surya inside, flanked on either side by Usha and Sandhya in a chariot drawn by horses. The temple also has an inner sanctum standing on pillars and Rekhanagara tower over it.   A sculpture of Vishnu on top of a cobra is housed inside the Hutmalli temple.   The Ravalpathi cave-temple has the Nataraja in various positions inside it.

There is a Jain Basadi as well here; the Meghuti Jain temple which stands atop of a hillock is a sight not to miss. The inscriptions which have been found in this temple have reference to poet Kalidasa. You have to climb a flight of steps to reach the Mughamandapa and another to reach the main shrine above. From the roof, you can have a spectacular view of the whole town.
