Twin Falls, Idaho is an easy place to overlook, but it actually makes a great stop if you’re passing through on a road trip or just need a comfortable place to spend the night. We stayed at the Holiday Inn Twin Falls for one night and were pleasantly surprised by how spacious and convenient it was.

The hotel sits near a cluster of restaurants and shops, with quick access to local highlights like Shoshone Falls and the Perrine Memorial Bridge. After a long day of driving, having everything close by and a roomy place to unwind made a big difference.

If you’re considering the Holiday Inn Twin Falls for a short stay, here’s what the experience was like, from the room layout and amenities to what stood out during our stay.

One of the strongest features of the Holiday Inn Twin Falls is its location. After hours on the road, it was nice to arrive somewhere that had everything close by without needing to drive all over town.

Right around the hotel, you will find a large cluster of familiar restaurants and stores. Options include places like Five Guys, Chili’s, Outback Steakhouse, Hobby Lobby, and JCPenney. This makes it easy to grab dinner, pick up travel essentials, or simply unwind without much planning.

The hotel is also conveniently located near some of Twin Falls’ main attractions, including:

• Perrine Memorial Bridge

• Shoshone Falls

If you are visiting Twin Falls briefly or using it as a stopover, this location saves time and effort.

Check-In Experience and First Impressions

We arrived around 9:00 pm after a long day of driving. At the time of our stay, there was construction happening around the hotel, which made parking a little awkward. We had to park farther from the main entrance and walk over some uneven areas, which was not ideal when dragging a suitcase. A temporary paved walkway would have made this much easier.

Once inside, however, the experience improved immediately. The front desk staff member was friendly, welcoming, and efficient. Check-in was quick, and all hotel details were clearly explained, including the breakfast situation. First impressions inside the hotel were very positive and set the tone for the stay.

The Room: Large, Clean, and Comfortable for One Night

Walking into the room, the first thing that stood out was how spacious it felt. At over 400 square feet, there was plenty of room to move around, spread out luggage, and relax. After several days of road trip travel, this extra space was very appreciated.

The room featured:

• A king-size bed with nightstands, lamps, outlets, and USB ports on both sides

• A sleeper sofa and ottoman

• A desk and TV directly across from the bed

• A microwave and mini fridge located under the TV

• A Keurig coffee machine with regular coffee, decaf, and tea

• A full-length mirror with multiple outlets nearby

• A large closet with hangers, iron, and ironing board

Natural light was another highlight. The room felt bright and open, which is not always the case with hotel rooms. This made the space feel more inviting, especially in the morning.

While the room itself was excellent, the bed was not my favorite. It felt very soft and springy, which is a personal comfort issue. I prefer firmer mattresses that provide more support.

I was still able to sleep, and for one night it was manageable, but it was not the most comfortable hotel bed I have experienced. If mattress firmness is very important to you, this is something to keep in mind.

Bathroom Layout and Amenities

The bathroom was well designed and practical, especially for two people sharing a room. The sink area was separated from the toilet and shower, which made it easier for both of us to get ready at the same time.

Bathroom highlights included:

• Bright lighting and a deep sink

• Good water pressure and temperature

• A makeup towel, which helps keep white towels clean

• Plenty of towels provided

• A hair dryer stored in the vanity area

The hotel uses Dove products for soap, lotion, and hand wash. While Dove is not my personal preference, everything was well stocked and clean. The shower head itself could be upgraded, but overall functionality was fine.

Dining Options: On-Site Restaurant but No Free Breakfast

One thing to note is that this Holiday Inn does not offer free breakfast. This was a bit disappointing, especially since many travelers now expect complimentary breakfast at hotels.

However, the hotel does have an on-site restaurant called Duke’s Grill. Breakfast is served in the morning, typically between 6:00 am and 10:00 am, with menu prices averaging around $12 per entrée. The restaurant also offers dinner and has a bar, which is convenient if you want to relax without leaving the hotel.

Room service is available as well, making this a good option for travelers arriving late or leaving early.

Final Thoughts: Who This Hotel Is Best For

The Holiday Inn Twin Falls is a solid option for travelers who need a comfortable, spacious place to stay for one night or a short visit. It works especially well for road trippers, families needing extra space, and anyone who values convenience and location.

While the bed and lack of free breakfast were drawbacks for me personally, the overall experience was positive. Using IHG points made this stay an excellent value, and I would consider staying here again for a similar overnight stop.

If you are passing through Twin Falls or looking for a practical hotel near Shoshone Falls, this is a dependable choice.

When I planned the road trip from Glacier National Park to Las Vegas, Twin Falls was simply a convenient overnight stop to break up the long drive. I figured we'd spend maybe an hour checking out the bridge and Shoshone Falls before moving on. I couldn't have been more wrong.

What I discovered was a vibrant, dog-friendly town with world-class BASE jumping, stunning waterfalls, and the kind of authentic experiences you can't plan for. Twin Falls completely exceeded my expectations, and now I'm already planning a return trip.

About Twin Falls: An Underrated Idaho City

Twin Falls is located in south-central Idaho, roughly halfway between Boise and Salt Lake City. The city was founded by I.B. Perrine and was named after the twin waterfalls on the Snake River (though one of the original twin falls is now mostly submerged by a dam). Twin Falls thrived due to an innovative irrigation project that transformed the desert into productive farmland, and agriculture remains important to the local economy today.

Twin Falls is known for its strong outdoor recreation culture, easy access to scenic viewpoints, and surprisingly relaxed pace for a city surrounded by dramatic natural features.

The Perrine Memorial Bridge: A BASE Jumper's Paradise

The Perrine Memorial Bridge was our first stop, and honestly, I thought we'd just look at it and leave. But as soon as we arrived, I noticed something unusual: people on the grass meticulously folding what turned out to be parachutes. That's when I realized we were about to witness something incredible.

Understanding BASE Jumping: The Ultimate Extreme Sport

BASE is an acronym that stands for:

• Buildings

• Antennas

• Spans, meaning bridges

• Earth, meaning cliffs

Unlike skydiving, where jumpers exit from aircraft at high altitudes with plenty of time to deploy parachutes, BASE jumpers leap from much lower heights, giving them only seconds to react.

The sport is incredibly risky. According to research, BASE jumping has a fatality rate estimated at about 1 death per 2,300 jumps, making it significantly more dangerous than skydiving, which has approximately 1 death per 500,000 jumps. The margin for error is razor-thin: jumpers typically have only 3 to 5 seconds from exit to deployment, and malfunctions can be catastrophic at such low altitudes.

Despite the risks, BASE jumping attracts thrill-seekers from around the globe who are drawn to the pure adrenaline rush and the technical skill required to execute a successful jump.

Why BASE Jumpers Love Twin Falls

As I explored the interpretive signs along the bridge, I learned something fascinating: Perrine Bridge is one of the only places in the United States where you can BASE jump year-round without a permit, 365 days a year. This makes it a mecca for BASE jumpers from around the world who come here daily to practice their sport.

The Perrine Memorial Bridge is an impressive structure in its own right. Completed in 1976, it stands 486 feet (148 meters) above the Snake River Canyon and spans 1,500 feet in length. At the time of its construction, it was the highest bridge in North America and remains one of the highest in the United States. The bridge replaced an older cantilever bridge and cost approximately $9.5 million to build.

I met a friendly local named John who shared even more amazing facts. His friend Jonathan Cox holds a Guinness World Record for completing 102 BASE jumps in just 24 hours from this very bridge! As long as the wind conditions are good, you'll see BASE jumpers here any day you visit.

Watching the BASE Jumpers in Action

What struck me most was watching the jumpers prepare. I saw a group of about seven people on the grass, meticulously folding and packing their parachutes for over an hour. The level of detail and precision was incredible. Everything had to be perfect, and for good reason given the sport's inherent dangers.

I decided to walk up onto the bridge walkway to get a jumper's perspective, and let me tell you, it gave me a whole new level of respect for these athletes. The bridge rattles from passing cars and trucks, it's windier up there, and you have to climb onto a ledge before jumping. They've even installed grip tape on the jumping spot because the surface is so slick. The whole area is covered in stickers from BASE jumpers, creating this cool community vibe.

One guy did multiple backflips on his way down. You could tell from the moment he walked up the stairs that he was full of confidence, just heading up there to have fun. Other jumpers were visibly nervous (as anyone would be!). One woman spent an hour and a half preparing her pack but ultimately decided not to jump due to wind conditions, though her boyfriend went for it without hesitation.

I watched five to six jumpers during my time there, and all of them landed safely in the grass or bushes near the water. It was absolutely thrilling to witness.

The History Behind Perrine Bridge

I learned so many fascinating facts about this bridge from the interpretive signs and from talking with locals. It's named after I.B. Perrine, an early settler who initiated numerous projects that essentially created the city of Twin Falls. Perrine was instrumental in developing the irrigation system that transformed the arid Snake River Canyon area into fertile agricultural land in the early 1900s.

And here's a fun piece of trivia: the legendary daredevil Evel Knievel attempted a famous mile-long canyon jump in this area back in 1974 at a location called the Snake River Canyon. While Knievel's steam-powered rocket didn't successfully cross the canyon, his attempt remains one of the most iconic moments in daredevil history.

Shoshone Falls: The Niagara of the West

After spending way more time at the bridge than planned, I headed to Shoshone Falls. I'll admit, I was hesitant at first. Some TripAdvisor reviews complained about the $5 entrance fee and said the falls weren't impressive. But John insisted I check it out, so I went.

A Grand Sight Worth Every Penny

I'm so glad I listened to John's advice. Shoshone Falls completely blew me away. They call it the "Niagara Falls of the West," and I had no idea it would be that big or that beautiful.

Shoshone Falls is truly spectacular. At 212 feet high and 900 feet wide, it's actually 45 feet taller than Niagara Falls! The falls are fed by the Snake River and are most impressive during spring runoff (typically April through July) when water flow is at its peak. I visited at the end of August when the flow was probably at its weakest but even then, the falls were still absolutely impressive and well worth the visit.

The drive into the park takes you along impressive rock formations that reminded me of the Going-to-the-Sun Road in Glacier National Park. Then you arrive at this lush, green oasis with rolling hills perfect for picnics.

The falls themselves are absolutely stunning. On a sunny day like when I visited, you'll see a gorgeous rainbow arcing over the cascading water. The rainbow stayed there the entire time I was watching.

Multiple Viewing Angles and Amenities

While there's one main viewing area that tends to get crowded, you can walk along trails to get completely different perspectives of the falls. I loved being able to see it from various angles.

The park is incredibly well-maintained with plenty of picnic tables, lush green grass, and a welcoming atmosphere. It's also extremely dog-friendly. In fact, that's something I noticed throughout Twin Falls: dogs everywhere, and everyone seemed totally comfortable with it. Even the BASE jumpers brought their dogs, who would just sleep on the grass waiting for their owners to finish jumping!

What Makes Twin Falls Special

Twin Falls transformed from a simple overnight stop into one of my favorite destinations. The town has a wonderful energy and the kind of authentic, unscripted experiences that make travel memorable. Twin Falls has so much character and so many unique attractions that I'm already planning to return.

If you're planning a road trip through Idaho or looking for an underrated destination in the Pacific Northwest, put Twin Falls on your list. Whether you're there to watch the BASE jumpers, marvel at Shoshone Falls, or simply enjoy the dog-friendly atmosphere and local charm, I think you'll love it as much as I did.

Glacier National Park is one of the most stunning national parks in the United States, but it is also one of the most challenging to plan. Between advance reservations, unpredictable weather, limited services, and intense competition for parking, Glacier requires more preparation than many first-time visitors expect.

We visited Glacier in late August as part of a Western National Parks road trip and experienced everything from zero-visibility fog to unforgettable wildlife encounters. These are the 12 most important things to know before you go, based on what actually mattered during our trip.

1. You Need to Book Far Earlier Than You Think

Glacier is not a park you can plan last minute during peak season.

By early summer, we found that lodging inside the park was sold out and many tours were fully booked.

If you are visiting between June and September, plan to book accommodations, tours, and reservations four to six months in advance whenever possible.

2. Glacier No Longer Has a Reservation System

When we visited Glacier National Park in August 2025, vehicle reservations were required during peak hours. From 2021 through 2025, the park operated under a timed-entry vehicle registration system.

As of 2026, timed-entry reservations are no longer required. Instead, Glacier has implemented a ticketed shuttle system and three-hour limited parking at Logan Pass. Policies can change from year to year, so be sure to check the official park website before your trip.

3. Elevation Changes Affect Temperature Quickly

Glacier’s elevation shifts quickly, especially along Going-to-the-Sun Road. You can start the day in mild, comfortable weather at lower elevations and find yourself noticeably colder just 30 to 45 minutes later at Logan Pass.

During our visit in late August, it was comfortable at the base, but once we reached Logan Pass, the temperature dropped and the wind picked up. I made the mistake of wearing just a light jacket without a long sleeve layer underneath, and I was much colder than I expected. Even in peak summer, higher elevations can feel like a completely different season.

4. Parking Fills Shockingly Early

Glacier attracts very motivated visitors.

Popular areas like Logan Pass often fill before 7:00 am, even on weekdays. Arriving “early” by normal standards may still be too late.

If a specific hike or viewpoint matters to you, plan to arrive at dawn or be prepared to change plans.

5. Morning Weather Is Often the Worst Weather

Late August mornings frequently bring:

• Fog

• Low clouds

• Light rain

• Poor visibility at higher elevations

This does not mean the day is ruined. Conditions often improve dramatically by late morning or afternoon. If visibility is poor, move to lower elevations or another area of the park and revisit later.

6. Flexibility Is More Important Than a Perfect Itinerary

Glacier does not reward rigid plans.

Trails may be fogged in, parking may be unavailable, and weather may change suddenly. Some of our best moments came from changing plans, leaving areas early, or taking unplanned detours.

Build extra time into each day and accept that you will not see everything.

7. Cell Service Is Extremely Limited

Cell service inside Glacier is spotty to nonexistent, especially in areas like Many Glacier.

Before entering the park:

• Download offline Google Maps

• Save trail maps

• Screenshot tour confirmations and reservations

• Download your lodging details

Do not assume you will be able to look things up once you are inside the park.

8. Staying on the West Side Has Major Advantages

We stayed on the West side of the park, and it worked extremely well.

Benefits included:

• More lodging availability

• Better dining options

• A well-stocked grocery store

• Easier access to Apgar Village and Lake McDonald

• Lower gas prices

The East side offers closer access to some areas, but services are limited and accommodations book far in advance.

9. Food Inside the Park Is Limited and Expensive

Dining options inside Glacier are sparse, and prices are high for what you get.

Packing food saved us time and money and allowed us to stay flexible. Simple lunches, snacks, and breakfasts made long days much easier.

If you cannot pack meals, there are a few in-park options, but plan for limited menus and extra wait time.

10. Wildlife Encounters Are Common, Even on Easy Trails

Glacier delivered the most wildlife sightings of our entire road trip.

We saw:

• A grizzly bear from a distance

• A black bear swimming

• Moose extremely close to the trail

• Bighorn sheep and mountain goats along the road

Late August is an active time for wildlife. Carrying bear spray or another deterrent is strongly recommended if you plan to hike.

11. Driving Times Look Long but Feel Shorter

Distances inside Glacier can appear intimidating on maps, with drive times of one to two hours.

In reality, those drives are part of the experience. Going-to-the-Sun Road is one of the most scenic drives in the country, and the views make the time pass quickly.

12. Glacier Rewards Preparation but Even More So, Patience

Glacier National Park requires more effort than many parks, but the payoff is enormous.

Weather challenges, missed turns, and unexpected wildlife encounters often become the most memorable moments. Going in prepared but patient makes all the difference.

Final Thoughts

Glacier National Park is not an easy destination, but it is one of the most rewarding. Advance planning, early mornings, downloaded maps, and flexible expectations will help you enjoy it rather than fight it.

Instead of packing the night before a trip, I like to plan my outfits ahead of time. This helps me stay organized and makes packing much easier.

I've split my two-week trip into two parts: a 6-day city adventure in Tokyo followed by time at my parents' house in Narita. For the Tokyo portion, my goal was to fit everything into a carry-on to avoid hauling heavy bags through train stations.

Here’s the process I usually follow.

1. Start With the Itinerary

The first thing I do is look at our trip itinerary.

Knowing where we plan to go helps me visualize what kind of outfits I might want for each day. For example, exploring Tokyo neighborhoods might call for comfortable walking outfits, while a dinner out might be a chance to wear something a little more stylish.

2. Check the Weather

Next, I check the forecast.

Tokyo weather in March is usually cool and sometimes rainy, so layering pieces are essential. Lightweight sweaters, cardigans, and a jacket make it easy to adjust throughout the day.

3. Choose Mix-and-Match Pieces

I try to pick clothing items that work with multiple outfits.

This might include:

• Neutral tops

• Comfortable jeans or trousers

• Layering sweaters

• A versatile jacket

Choosing pieces that can mix and match helps reduce the number of items I need to pack.

4. Try On the Outfits

Once I have a few outfit ideas, I try everything on to see how it looks together.

This step helps me decide which pieces actually work well together and which ones should stay home.

5. Make Sure Everything Fits in the Suitcase

Finally, I pack the outfits to make sure everything fits in my suitcase.

I also leave space for shopping since I usually bring back souvenirs and items from Japan.

Here are some of the pieces I chose for this trip.

Layering tops are essential for Japan in spring.
I packed a mix of pieces including:

• Lightweight sweaters

• Cardigans

• Button-down shirts

• Basic t-shirts for layering

These pieces make it easy to adjust throughout the day if temperatures change.

Pants and Denim

For bottoms, I prefer comfortable and versatile options that work for long days of walking.
For this trip I packed:

• High-waisted jeans

• Wide-leg trousers

• Neutral pants that can pair with multiple tops

Comfort is important since exploring Tokyo usually involves a lot of walking.

Jackets for Spring Weather

Outerwear can completely change the look of an outfit, especially in photos. Because of that, I like to bring at least one or two jacket options. For this trip I chose a trench coat since it works well for spring weather and light rain.

Shoes

Comfortable shoes are essential for travel in Japan. Tokyo involves a lot of walking and public transportation, so supportive shoes are important.

For this trip I packed:

Accessories

Accessories are a great way to add variety without taking up much space in your suitcase.

My Carry-On Packing Strategy for Tokyo

When traveling around Tokyo, I prefer using a carry-on suitcase rather than a large suitcase.

Many train stations in Japan have stairs, and navigating them with heavy luggage can be difficult.

Packing strategically allows me to:

• Bring fewer clothing items

• Mix and match outfits

• Leave room for shopping

Temperatures are usually in the mid-40s to mid-60s °F, which means mornings and evenings can feel cool while afternoons are often comfortable. Because of this, lightweight layers like sweaters, cardigans, and a light jacket tend to work best.

• Small Hand Towel: Many public restrooms do not have paper towels or hand dryers. Carrying a small towel is a local norm. Think of it as the size of a standard American washcloth. If you forget to pack one, you can find them everywhere from convenience stores to high-end boutiques. They come in endless colors and adorable designs. • Portable Power Bank: Between Google Maps and taking photos of the Sakura, your battery will drain faster than usual.

• Collapsible Umbrella: While you can buy clear ones at any konbini (convenience store), a high-quality compact one is better for wind.

• Too many toiletries: Drugstores like Matsumoto Kiyoshi and convenience stores carry most travel essentials if you run out.

• Lots of Cash from Home: Japan is more card-friendly than it used to be, and ATMs at convenience stores like 7-Eleven make it easy to withdraw yen if you need it.

• Travel Adapters: If you’re coming from the U.S., most electronics work in Japan without an adapter because both countries use the same plug type. I use my flat and curling iron just fine without an adapter.

Getting Started: A Minor Mix-Up

We arrived at 9:45am (15 minutes early as instructed) and immediately hit a small snag. There was some confusion with bus numbers, and our 75-year-old guide Al didn't call out to us even though we were clearly waiting. After checking back in with the desk, we finally got on bus 84 (not 89 as we were initially told). Al seemed a bit annoyed that we were "late," even though we'd been there since 9:45. It was a rocky start, but things improved significantly from there.

The Stops Along the Way

Wild Goose Island

Lake McDonald Lodge Lunch Break

We stopped at Lake McDonald Lodge for lunch, where you can choose between Russell’s Fireside Dining Room for a sit-down meal or Jammer Joe’s Grill & Pizzeria for something quicker.

We went with Jammer Joe’s purely for convenience since it was the fastest option with the limited lunch window. While it did the job timing-wise, the food was pretty underwhelming. We tried the chicken parmesan sandwich and weren’t fans, and the coffee was not great either.

Sacred Dancing Cascade

After lunch, we stopped at Sacred Dancing Cascade, a beautiful waterfall where water moves gracefully over rocky ledges, hence the "dancing" in its name. The vibrant blue water was absolutely stunning and made for great photos.

Additional Stops and Wildlife

We stopped at several pullouts to admire valleys, waterfalls, and mountain views. We got lucky and spotted two bighorn sheep crossing the road, which was incredibly exciting. Because we had the top open at that point, we could easily stand up and photograph them without fighting for parking or crowding the roadside.

With the top open, we stopped to take photos of the Triple Arches. These arches were designed to bridge mountain gaps without massive retaining walls, allowing the road to blend naturally into the landscape. It is an impressive example of early park engineering.

We stopped at Jackson Glacier Overlook for about 15 minutes, which gave us time to walk down the stairs and explore the historic horse tunnel. Often referred to as the “horse tunnel,” this underpass was built in the 1930s for horse parties traveling between chalets. It sits between the upper and lower parking areas along Going-to-the-Sun Road. We walked through the tunnel ourselves, and it was a fun way to experience a small piece of Glacier’s early travel history.

Along the way, Al pointed out Going-to-the-Sun Mountain and shared fascinating tidbits, like how the park originally had 85 to 100 glaciers when it opened, but now only about 25 remain.

The Open-Top Experience: A Game Changer

Here's where the tour really won me over. Initially, Al kept the top closed due to rain, which was understandable but disappointing since the open-top experience is a huge part of what makes these buses special. When I noticed other buses had their tops off on the return journey, I asked if we could do the same.

Al seemed surprised, saying I was the only one who wanted it open, but he agreed. I'm so glad I spoke up! If you’re planning a trip to Glacier National Park and discovering that lodging inside the park is already booked, staying just outside the entrance can be a great option. During our late-August trip, we stayed at Sky Eco Cabins in West Glacier, and it ended up being one of our favorite parts of the experience.

We stayed for two nights, and from the moment we walked in, I was genuinely impressed. I love cabins in general, but this one stood out because it combined cozy cabin vibes with modern design and thoughtful details.

Location: Convenient and Surprisingly Quiet

Sky Eco Cabins are located in West Glacier, about a 13-minute drive to Apgar Village and Lake McDonald. That made early mornings into the park very manageable.

Although the cabins are near the highway, road noise was minimal. Cars passed by occasionally, but it was never disruptive and faded into the background quickly.

Another big plus was the proximity to restaurants, bars, and a grocery store. We stocked up on food and cooked most of our meals at the cabin, which saved money and time.

Cabin Overview: Bear Den

Our cabin was called Bear Den, one of four cabins lined up on the property. You can park right in front of the cabin, which makes unloading luggage incredibly easy.

Check-in is contactless using a door code that is sent a couple of days before arrival. Not having to deal with keys was very convenient.

Day 1: Red Bus Tour & Going-to-the-Sun Road

Our first full day in Glacier centered around Going-to-the-Sun Road, one of the most scenic drives in the country. We booked the historic Red Bus Tour months in advance, knowing it would let us experience the road without worrying about driving, parking, or navigating narrow mountain curves.

The morning started cloudy and damp, which is common in Glacier, but conditions improved as the day went on. Once the weather cleared, riding with the top of the bus rolled back completely transformed the experience. Standing up, taking photos, and watching bighorn sheep cross directly in front of us ended up being one of the highlights of our entire road trip.

Morning: Apgar Village (6:00 AM)

We started the day at Apgar Village to see Lake McDonald before our tour. The gift shop opens at 6:00 AM and has surprisingly great merchandise, along with a small café serving coffee and pastries. It was cloudy with light rain, so the lake was not the vibrant blue you often see in photos, but it was still peaceful and beautiful in its own way.

Drive to Rising Sun Motor Inn

The roughly 1.5-hour drive from Apgar Village to Rising Sun Motor Inn, where our tour picked up, went smoothly. The weather stayed overcast with occasional light rain, but visibility was good. Along the way, we passed through two tunnels, drove past the Weeping Wall where water cascades directly onto the road, and took in constant mountain views that made the drive fly by.

Red Bus Tour: Crown of the Continent

The Red Bus Tours use vintage 1930s buses with roll-back tops and are truly iconic. Our tour included several memorable stops, including:

On the drive back, we stopped again at Sacred Dancing Cascade to walk closer to the waterfall. After a full day, we headed back to our cabin and cooked dinner, grateful for a quiet evening after such an unforgettable day.

Day 2: Many Glacier Adventure

Our second day was spent in the Many Glacier area, which quickly became our favorite part of the park. The morning started with thick fog and almost zero visibility, forcing us to abandon our original hiking plan. Instead of waiting it out, we drove to lower elevations, and by the time we reached Many Glacier, conditions had improved significantly.

We spent the day around Swiftcurrent Lake, rented a rowboat, took a boat tour, and ended up on an unexpected walk that became the highlight of the trip.

Hidden Lake Overlook Attempt - FAILED (6:00-8:00 AM)

We woke up at 4:00 AM with plans to hike Hidden Lake Overlook, a 2.7-mile trail starting at Logan Pass. As we drove up Going-to-the-Sun Road, the fog became thicker and thicker until visibility dropped to nearly zero. I was driving about 10 mph, seeing nothing but white clouds. Earlier that morning, a National Park shuttle bus had even hit the rock wall because visibility was so poor.

By 7:30 AM, the parking lot at Logan Pass was already full, and we still could not see anything through the fog. After sitting in the car debating what to do, along with another couple doing the same, we decided to abandon the hike and head to Many Glacier instead.

Lesson learned: Glacier weather is wildly unpredictable. Always have a backup plan.

Grizzly Bear Sighting! (Around 9:00 AM)

On the drive to Many Glacier, we spotted a grizzly bear on a hillside. First grizzly I'd ever seen! A couple behind us shared their binoculars so we could see how huge it was.

Many Glacier Hotel is a historic lodge sitting right in front of Swiftcurrent Lake, and visiting it alone is an experience. The building has a Swiss-inspired feel, and the employees wear charming Swiss-themed uniforms. When we arrived around 10:00 AM, there was plenty of parking, though it can get busier later in the day during peak season.

We had time before our boat tour, so we decided to rent a rowboat on Swiftcurrent Lake. Learning how to row for the first time was surprisingly challenging and incredibly fun. It took a few minutes to get the hang of it, but once I did, I did not want to stop, at least not until my arms gave out.

Glacier Park Boat Tour

We originally had a 2:00 PM reservation but joined the wait list for the 1:00 PM tour and were able to get on. The tour includes a ride across Swiftcurrent Lake, a steep 0.2-mile hill climb, and then a second boat ride across Josephine Lake. You also have the option to hike and catch a later return boat.

Black Bear Alert:
Right after we got off the boat at Josephine Lake, a black bear was swimming in the water. It climbed out and ran into the trees near the trail. Every hiker we passed kept asking, “Did you see the bear?” Word travels fast in Glacier.

Getting Lost Was the Best Part (2:00–5:00 PM)

We were among the few people who stayed to hike toward Grinnell Lake, a 2.8-mile trail. Somewhere along the way, we completely missed the turn and walked far past it. When we asked other hikers for directions, they told us the lake was “way on the other side.”

A little bummed and unsure what to do next, we started heading back. That’s when a group stopped us and said, “Wait, there’s a moose right there.” A mama moose was incredibly close to the trail. We waited until she moved away, taking photos the entire time.

As if that was not enough, we started chatting with a couple from the group while walking back and discovered they were also from Tampa. What are the odds of meeting people from your hometown in the middle of Montana?

We ended up walking the full perimeter of Swiftcurrent Lake and Josephine Lake back to the hotel. The walk was mostly flat, incredibly scenic, and full of memorable moments. Getting lost turned out to be the best part of our Glacier trip.

Two days gave us a solid introduction: Going-to-the-Sun Road, Red Bus Tour, boat tour, and incredible wildlife. But we'd love 3-4 days to hike Hidden Lake in good weather, actually find Grinnell Lake, and explore more trails without rushing.

Final Thoughts

Glacier tested us with fog and getting lost. But those challenges created our best moments: grizzly and black bear sightings, a close moose encounter, meeting Tampa locals in Montana, and riding a vintage bus with the top off as bighorn sheep crossed in front of us.

My advice: Book early, pack for all weather, start at sunrise, and embrace whatever Glacier throws at you. The best moments come from plans that don't work out.

The bathroom itself was simple but worked well. Water temperature and pressure were good, and everything functioned as expected. The shower head squeaked a bit, but nothing major. Toiletries included soap, shampoo, conditioner, lotion, and even makeup wipes, which was a nice touch.

The hotel leans fully into a cozy cabin vibe, with lots of wood finishes and adorable bear and moose decor throughout the room and common areas. One of my favorite details was the little bear accents on the lamps and artwork. The light slowly crept over the mountains, turning the peaks soft pink. While I had heard stories of photographers fighting for space, our experience was relaxed and friendly. Everyone was respectful, and it felt peaceful rather than competitive.

Tip: If sunrise feels too early, cloudy mornings can soften the light and still create beautiful photos.

Schwabacher Landing

This short, easy trail was one of my favorite stops in the park. The reflections of the mountains in the water honestly looked like a painting. It is flat, stroller-friendly, and incredibly scenic with very little effort required.

If you only have time for one short walk in Grand Teton, this would be my top recommendation.

Snake River Overlook and Oxbow Bend

Snake River Overlook was interesting, but not a standout for us. Oxbow Bend felt more atmospheric, especially with the slow curve of the river and surrounding wetlands. This area also has a long human history, with Indigenous tribes drawn here for thousands of years.

Jenny Lake Area and What to Do If It Is Full

By late morning, the Jenny Lake area was completely packed. Parking was full and Inspiration Point was not accessible without a long wait. This is where flexibility really matters.

If the Jenny Lake area is at capacity, there are excellent alternatives:

• Head back to downtown Jackson for a relaxed lunch and some shopping. This is exactly what we did, and it was a nice break from the crowds.

• Visit Teton Village, which offers mountain views, shops, restaurants, and a more resort-style atmosphere.

Both options make for an enjoyable afternoon and help avoid the stress of circling crowded parking lots. If you have extra time or energy left, you can go back to Jenny Lake near sunset or early the next morning.

Yellowstone National Park

Wildlife, Geysers, and Constant Surprises

Yellowstone is massive, and no amount of planning fully prepares you for how much driving, waiting, and adapting is involved. We stayed in West Yellowstone, which worked well for early starts and flexible routing.

Old Faithful

Yes, it is crowded. Yes, you may wait a while. But seeing Old Faithful erupt in person is still worth doing at least once. The eruption was quieter and more graceful than expected, lasting several minutes rather than a dramatic burst.

Interesting fact: Old Faithful erupts roughly every 90 minutes and can reach heights of about 160 feet.

Upper Geyser Basin

Although we did not personally spend time walking through the Upper Geyser Basin beyond Old Faithful, it is one of the most popular areas in Yellowstone and worth mentioning for planning purposes.

The Upper Geyser Basin contains the world’s largest single concentration of hot springs and geysers, including Old Faithful itself. Many visitors choose to walk the extended boardwalks here to see additional geysers like Castle Geyser, Grand Geyser, and Riverside Geyser, which are often less crowded the farther you walk from Old Faithful.

If you have extra time or want to get more value out of the Old Faithful area, exploring deeper into the Upper Geyser Basin can be a great way to see more geothermal activity without constantly moving your car.

Grand Prismatic Spring

This completely exceeded my expectations. The colors were vibrant and surreal, and walking the boardwalk up close was incredible. Be prepared for extra walking since parking often spills onto the roadside, and there is very little shade.

Tip: Bring sun protection even if temperatures feel mild. The exposure here is intense.

Fountain Paint Pots

This ended up being one of my favorite stops in Yellowstone. Bubbling mud pots, steam vents, and constant movement made it feel more dynamic than some of the larger, more famous geysers. I actually found this area more engaging than Old Faithful.

Mammoth Hot Springs

We also visited Mammoth Hot Springs, located in the northern section of the park. This area looks completely different from the rest of Yellowstone, with terraced travertine formations that are constantly changing as hot water flows and cools.

While it was not as visually grand as Pamukkale in Turkey, which I have visited before, it was still interesting to see how active and ever-changing the landscape is. The boardwalks make it easy to explore, and it offered a nice contrast to the colorful hydrothermal areas like Grand Prismatic.

If you are already heading toward the north entrance or have extra time, Mammoth Hot Springs is worth a short visit.

Wildlife in Lamar Valley and Hayden Valley

We woke up before dawn to reach Lamar Valley, which is often recommended for wildlife viewing. While the area was beautiful and peaceful, most of the animals were very far away. Without binoculars or a telephoto lens, it was difficult to get a good view.

Hayden Valley was a much better experience for us. We saw large herds of bison, some fairly close to the road, including baby calves. Hearing them grunt as they walked past us was unforgettable.

It is also important to know that you do not need to be in a specific valley to see bison. While driving around Yellowstone, there is a very good chance you will encounter bison walking directly on or alongside the main roads. We experienced multiple traffic stops caused by bison casually crossing or standing near our car.

Important reminder: Always stay at least 25 yards away from bison, even when they appear calm or block the road.

Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone and Artist Point

We skipped the steep Lower Falls hike after reading the warning signs and opted for viewpoints instead. The overlooks provided incredible views without the stress of a strenuous hike. Artist Point delivered dramatic canyon views, powerful waterfalls, and multiple angles worth stopping for.

Other Yellowstone Stops to Consider

Yellowstone is so large that it is impossible to see everything in one visit. If certain areas feel too crowded or parking is full, these are solid alternatives to consider depending on your route and timing.

Fairy Falls Trail
This is a popular but rewarding hike that leads to Fairy Falls and also provides access to a Grand Prismatic overlook from above. Parking can be challenging during peak hours, but if you can make it work, it offers a different perspective than the boardwalks.

Point Sublime Trail or Overlooks
For those interested in quieter viewpoints, Point Sublime offers expansive views over the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone. Access can depend on road conditions and timing, but it is a good option for visitors who want something less crowded than the main canyon viewpoints.

West Thumb Geyser Basin
Located along Yellowstone Lake, this compact geyser basin combines steaming thermal features with lake views. It is easy to walk and often feels more manageable than larger geyser areas.

Mud Volcano Trail
This area highlights Yellowstone’s more raw and dramatic geothermal activity, with bubbling mud pots and strong sulfur smells. It is very different from colorful pools like Grand Prismatic and adds variety to a Yellowstone itinerary.

When I was researching hotels in Jackson, it came down to Rockwell Inn and the nearby 49er Inn. The 49er Inn was a bit cheaper, but Rockwell Inn just looked nicer overall. We decided to spend a little more, and I’m so glad we did. The hotel felt more updated, more comfortable, and honestly just more pleasant to come back to at the end of the day.

Our Room: Courtyard 2 Queen Room

We stayed in a Courtyard 2 Queen Room, and the space was surprisingly roomy. One of my favorite little touches was the stuffed wolf named Roxy waiting on the bed when we arrived. I love themed details like that. It instantly made the room feel more personal and fun. (And yes, you can actually buy Roxy for $25 if you want to take her home.)

Right outside our room was a small courtyard with seating and Edison-style lights, which looked especially cozy in the evening. We were usually too tired to hang out there, but I loved having that space right outside the door.

Jackson is a beautiful place to bike, especially if you head toward scenic areas like Mormon Row. There are proper trails, mountain views, and plenty of photo-worthy scenery along the way.

Indoor Pool and Hot Tub

There’s a small indoor pool and a jacuzzi. I didn’t use them, but I did check them out. The pool is very small, but it’s still a nice option if you want a quick soak.

Laundry Facilities

They have a laundry room with washers and dryers that accept credit cards. It was about $3 for the washer and $2 for the dryer, and the front desk can provide detergent if you need it.

Free Cookies (My Favorite!)

Every day at 5:00 pm, they put out free hot cookies, along with water, lemonade, coffee, and tea near the front desk. The cookies were so good that I grabbed two one evening. No regrets.

Fitness Center Access

There’s no gym on-site, but the hotel provides a free day pass to the local rec center across the street, which is a great alternative if you want to work out.

Parking and Noise

Parking was extremely convenient. You can park right in front of your room, which made unloading luggage easy, especially after long travel days.

Our room was on the first floor, with a room above us. We could occasionally hear footsteps, but it was very minimal and didn’t affect our sleep at all.

Our Courtyard 2 Queen Room was $505 per night, for a total of $1,011 for two nights. Hotel prices in Jackson can vary quite a bit depending on the season, day of the week, and availability, so rates may be higher or lower depending on when you visit.

At $505 per night, this stay was definitely a splurge for me, and it’s not a price point I usually pay for hotels. That said, every once in a while there are those special trips where I’m okay spending a little more, and this was one of them. Hotels near national parks tend to be expensive, especially during peak season, and Jackson is no exception.

I also balanced things out by using credit card points and hotel points for other stays on this Western national parks road trip, which made splurging here feel a lot more reasonable. In the end, the comfort, location, and overall experience made it worth it for this trip.

Absolutely. Rockwell Inn was cozy, comfortable, and incredibly convenient. The location alone makes it a great choice, but the little extras like free bikes, hot cookies, and thoughtful room amenities really stood out to me.

Day 1: Las Vegas to Jackson, Wyoming

We left Vegas around 6 AM for the 10-hour drive to Jackson, arriving early evening. The Rockwell Inn was charming with a courtyard where you could park right in front of your room. After checking in, we walked to StillWest Brewery & Grill for dinner, which I can't recommend (awful drinks). We salvaged the evening at The Rose, a cocktail lounge that was fantastic.

Day 2: Grand Teton National Park

Reality Check: We planned to wake up before sunrise, but like most road trips, sleep schedules slipped. Even with a later start, Grand Teton National Park completely delivered.

Key Stops:

Mormon Row: One of the most photographed locations in the park. Even without perfect sunrise lighting, the historic barns framed by the Tetons were stunning. We spent over an hour here taking photos and videos from every angle.

Schwabacher Landing: Easy half-mile hike with incredible mountain reflections that look like a painting. Most picturesque spots are right at the beginning.

Snake River Overlook: Nice view of the meandering river but not a "wow" moment.

Oxbow Bend: Pretty, but we got better photos at Schwabacher Landing. Bonus: we spotted distant bison and pet horses along the way.

By midday, parking lots near Jenny Lake and Inspiration Point were completely full. Instead of forcing it, we pivoted and made a spontaneous stop near Lupine Meadows Trailhead, where open fields and mountain views gave us space to breathe and take photos without crowds.

We ended the day back in Jackson with a late lunch and early dinner at Merry Piglets Tex Mex. We spent time walking around downtown Jackson, which is such a charming little town. There are tons of eateries, cafes, bars, and local shops packed into a very walkable area. It was the perfect place to wind down after a full park day, grab food, and soak in the small-town mountain vibe.

Day 3: Sunrise at Mormon Row and Yellowstone Bound

This time, we got it right. We woke up at 4:00 am and made it to Mormon Row before sunrise. The soft light slowly hit the peaks, turning them pink and gold. It was calm, uncrowded, and absolutely worth the early alarm.

After sunrise, we drove north into Yellowstone National Park and by late morning we arrived at Old Faithful.

Yellowstone Sites Visited

• Old Faithful was great to finally see in person, but it was a bit underwhelming compared to other geothermal features we encountered later in the park. It is iconic and worth seeing once, but it was not the most exciting geyser for us.

• Grand Prismatic Spring completely blew me away and is an absolute must-see. The vibrant colors of the spring are truly spectacular and even more impressive in person than in photos. This was easily one of my favorite stops in Yellowstone.

• Fountain Paint Pots was so much fun and surprisingly educational. Seeing the bubbling mud pots, steaming vents, and different geothermal features all in one area really helped us understand how diverse Yellowstone’s geothermal landscape is.

After a long day, we checked into our hotel in West Yellowstone and had a late lunch and early dinner at The Buffalo Bar, located near our hotel in downtown West Yellowstone. It was a friendly, relaxed bar restaurant with good food and a welcoming atmosphere, which was exactly what we wanted after a full park day.

Day 4: Wildlife and Waterfalls in Yellowstone

This day focused on big views and wildlife. We woke up early again at 4 AM to make the two-hour drive to Lamar Valley from West Yellowstone so we could get there by sunrise.

Lamar Valley: This area is known for wildlife viewing. Bison herds were far out (need binoculars and telephoto lenses). Not great for us without proper equipment, but just as we were leaving, a herd of bison walked right past us making grunting sounds. Two baby calves with them. We were the only ones there!

Artist Point: The views of the Yellowstone River cutting through the canyon are dramatic and expansive, and you really get a sense of how massive the landscape is. This was one of the most impressive viewpoints in the park and did not require a strenuous hike to enjoy.

Hayden Valley: This area was much better for bison viewing during our visit. We saw bison close to the road, making it easy to stop, observe, and take photos. Watching them roam freely through the valley was one of those classic Yellowstone moments.

Canyon Eatery: We stopped at Canyon Eatery for lunch. The food was super average, but better than nothing. They had an Asian food station and fast food options like chicken fingers and burgers.

Mammoth Hot Springs: This was over an hour drive from Canyon Eatery, but I wanted to see it because it reminded me of the travertines at Pamukkale in Turkey. It was cool, but not as grand as what I saw in Turkey. On the drive back, we spotted more bison and steam vents along the road, proving that Yellowstone always has something new around the next curve.

Late Afternoon Swim: We stopped by a river so Tyrone could jump in for a quick swim. The water wasn't as cold as we expected, actually warmer than anticipated.

Day 5: Driving to Glacier National Park

The drive to Glacier National Park took most of the day and was filled with rain. Once we reached Montana, the weather cleared and temperatures rose (high 80s). We stopped for a late lunch at Paul Bunyan Bar and Grill before checking into our cabin near the park.

That evening, we picked up groceries at Canyon Food, just 5 minutes from our cabin. The prices were surprisingly reasonable for being in the middle of nowhere. Red Bus Tour Experience

Pickup Location: Rising Sun Motor Inn at 10:15 AM (arrive 15 minutes early)

Our Guide: Al, 75 years old, who had been hiking these mountains since his 30s. He was knowledgeable but occasionally forgot what he was saying. He also almost forgot us at the pickup point and when we finally got on, he scolded us for being late, even though we'd been there since 9:45 AM. That was frustrating.

Tour Highlights:

The drive through Going-to-the-Sun Road was gorgeous, though it was still raining during the first part. We made several stops:

1. Wild Goose Island: Quick photo stop while it was still raining. Al shared myths about the island. It's one of the most photographed spots in the park.

2. Reynolds Creek Fire Area: We drove past burnt trees from the 2015 fire, the park's largest, which burned 2% of the park (almost 5,000 acres).

3. Logan Pass: Our first restroom stop with 45 minutes to explore. This is the highest elevation reachable by car in the park at 6,646 feet.

4. Lake McDonald Lodge: Lunch break. We ate at Jammer Joe's for more affordable quick bites instead of the fine dining restaurant, which had a 30-minute wait.

5. Sacred Dancing Cascade: Named for the way water moves gracefully over rocky ledges. We stopped here again on our way back and walked down closer to enjoy the nature.

6. Jackson Glacier Overlook: You can walk through the horse tunnel here which was built in the 1930s. This small tunnel was designed to accommodate horse parties traveling from the Going-to-the-Sun Chalets over Piegan Pass to Many Glacier.

We saw two bighorn sheep during the tour, and Al pointed out the Triple Arches, Going-to-the-Sun Mountain, and other fun facts about the park.

Verdict: Overall, the tour ended up being really fun, and I'd recommend it. You get to see viewpoints and learn history that you'd miss on your own, like the horse tunnel.

The drive back down was beautiful. We pulled over near the bottom to enjoy Sacred Dancing Cascade up close one more time.

Dinner: We cooked dinner in the cabin with groceries from Canyon Food.

Day 7: Glacier Boat Tour and Hiking

Morning Drama: Planned to hike Hidden Lake Overlook, but thick fog made visibility almost zero. I drove 10 mph up Going-to-the-Sun Road seeing nothing but white clouds. We gave up and headed to Many Glacier Hotel instead.

Grizzly Bear Sighting! On the drive to Many Glacier, we saw our first grizzly bear of the trip. A couple behind us had binoculars and shared them with us so we could get a better look. It was incredible, the first grizzly bear I'd ever seen in my life.

Glacier Park Boat Tour

What to Know:

• Pick up tickets 30 minutes prior at the ticket office behind the hotel

• Board 15 minutes prior

• Last return boat at 5:45 PM

We arrived early and explored the area. We even went rowboating on Swiftcurrent Lake, which was harder than it looks! It took me a good 5-10 minutes to get the rhythm down. Once you figure it out, though, it's really fun. The weather was perfect at 60°F, and we spent about an hour rowing around.

Wait List Success: We originally had a 2 PM reservation but got on the wait list for 11 AM and 1 PM. We didn't make the 11 AM boat (too many people), but we got on the 1 PM boat. The timing worked out perfectly after rowboating and having lunch.

Black Bear Surprise: Right after getting off the boat at Josephine Lake, we saw a black bear swimming in the distance! It ran into the trees up the mountain when it got scared of the boat approaching.

Getting Lost Turned Into the Best Moment

After the Glacier Park boat tour, we attempted to hike toward Grinnell Lake, but we missed the correct turn. At first, this was frustrating, but it quickly turned into the best part of the day.

We encountered:

• A moose and her baby along the trail

• Incredible scenery we would not have seen otherwise

• Fellow travelers from Tampa, which felt like such a small-world moment

What started as a mistake ended up feeling like a blessing and became one of my favorite memories from Glacier.

Evening at Apgar Village

At the end of the day, we drove back to Apgar Village, where Tyrone went for a swim in Lake McDonald. The weather was much nicer than the day before, and it was a perfect way to end such a full day in Glacier.

Day 8: Glacier to Twin Falls, Idaho

The 8.5-hour drive toward Idaho included several quirky stops.

Shield Arms & Skald Coffee (Bigfork, MT): Coffee shop + firearms store combo. Wall of semi-automatic rifles, excellent coffee, fresh waffles. Very clean and modern with outdoor terrace. The friendly owner chatted with Tyrone about mountain biking.

Giant Cow Statue (Greenough, MT): At Cow Store 'N More, crossroads of Highways 83 and 200. Quick photo op.

Craters of the Moon National Monument: Eeriest place ever. Miles of black lava rocks from ancient volcanic eruption. Dead silent. No animals, no cars, nothing. We got ringing in our ears from the silence. Reminded me of Iceland.

Day 9: Twin Falls Exploration & Return to Vegas

Twin Falls turned out way cooler than expected!

Perrine Memorial Bridge: Incredible Snake River views, but the real attraction is BASE jumpers! I'd never seen BASE jumping in person. Watched multiple jumpers throughout our visit. They're there daily (weather permitting). Even standing on the bridge as a spectator is scary because it rattles. Exhilarating!

Shoshone Falls ($5 entrance): Often called "Niagara of the West." Powerful and impressive, especially when water levels are high. The viewing areas make it easy to take in the falls from multiple angles, and it is well worth the stop if you are in the area.

After exploring, we drove 7.5 hours back to Vegas, gaining an hour with the time zone change.

First Impressions: That Lobby Vibe

I arrived super early (like, three hours early), hoping to snag an earlier check-in , but the 4:00 PM check-in time was firm. However, I honestly didn't mind hanging out. The lobby at this Hilton has plenty of comfortable seating, feels incredibly cozy, and is absolutely gorgeous with its stylish decor and warm ambiance.

I had no problem killing three hours there because the lobby featured a cafe serving Starbucks coffee along with a nice selection of small light bites. Right next to the cafe was a bar that was open and the entire floor had plenty of comfortable spots where I could relax. I brought my laptop, managed to get some work done, and before I even realized it, those three hours had actually flown by really fast.

• Coffee Station: Although I didn’t end up trying any of the coffee options that were available, I did make good use of the mini fridge. I had brought back some dessert from the event and having the fridge was really convenient.

Located inside the MGM Grand, this dining concept brings some of Netflix’s most popular shows to life through creative dishes, playful cocktails, and interactive moments. As someone who loves a good themed experience, I was excited to visit.

I made our reservations online for 5:00 PM because on Fridays and Saturdays they feature a Squid Game soldier appearance between 5:30 and 9:30. I was curious to see how theatrical it would be. Tyrone, my boyfriend, came with me, along with my friends who were meeting us a bit later.

The Atmosphere at Netflix Bites

Netflix Bites is easy to find once you’re inside MGM Grand. Just follow the signs toward the back and you’ll spot the entrance. The space has a fun, modern design with bold pops of color and show-inspired quotes like “Watching is good. Eating is better.” There is also a cool retro-looking bar inside that adds to the overall vibe.

Nothing feels overly decorated, but there are enough themed elements around the restaurant to keep you entertained.

The Drink Menu: Playful, Themed, and Over-the-Top

The cocktail menu is where Netflix Bites really shines. Most drinks are inspired by specific Netflix shows and served with dramatic presentations. Some even include glowing ice cubes, swirling clouds, and little show references worked into the garnish.

The Mind Flayer ($24)

A Stranger Things themed bourbon cocktail topped with a cotton candy lightning cloud. When Tyrone ordered this, it immediately lit up and looked incredible. It is definitely one of the most visually impressive drinks of the night.

Pink Soldier ($18)

A gin-based cocktail inspired by Squid Game. It has a fruity profile and is very aesthetic.

Streaming Optimism ($18)

This is the margarita-style drink I ordered. It is not based on any specific show because it is actually sponsored by Mastercard, which explains the red and yellow colors. I love margaritas, so this was an easy choice for me.

Some drinks can be very expensive at $28, like the Love Is Blind drink since it comes with a souvenir cup. Vegas prices, but the presentations make it feel more special.

We were also given complimentary popcorn with our drinks, which was a nice touch.

The Food: Creative Concepts Based on Netflix Shows

Once we sat down, we noticed that most of the entrées and appetizers were inspired by different Netflix series. The menu makes it fun to try something new.

Here’s what our group ordered:

Red Bite, Green Bite ($28)

This was my pick, based on Squid Game. It comes with fried chicken pieces and three sauces: red, yellow, and green. The best part is the spinning wheel placed in the center of the dish. You spin it to see which color you get, and that determines which sauce you dip into. My friends and I all took turns spinning, and it was so fun to watch everyone react when the wheel landed on their color. All the sauces were delicious, so there was no wrong choice.

Hellfire Club Sandwich ($28)

Tyrone ordered this, and it is inspired by Stranger Things. It is a hearty club sandwich that looked very satisfying. I loved that the crusts were taken off of the bread and it came with my favorite wrinkled fries.

Who’s the Chicken Now? Sandwich ($24)

My friend Tanya ordered this one. It is inspired by the show The Gentlemen. The sandwich itself is a tasty chicken sandwich, but the fun part is that it comes with a tiny novelty rubber chicken on the plate. It is a playful nod to the show and adds an interactive moment.

Gorgeous Ladies Disco Fries ($19)

This was recommended by our server. It is a great shareable option and full of flavor.

All of our dishes came out beautifully and tasted great. Prices hover around $25 per entrée, which feels standard for themed dining in Vegas.

The Squid Game Soldier Appearance

Around 6:00 PM, the Squid Game soldier made his entrance. There was only one soldier that night, but he visited each table and took photos with every guest. He stayed completely in character, which made the experience even more fun. It was a small touch but added a unique and memorable moment to the evening.

I had such a great time at Netflix Bites. The food is delicious, the drinks are creative, and the interactive elements make it stand out from other themed dining experiences in Las Vegas. It is definitely on the pricier side, but that is expected for the location and the theatrical touches.

During our cross-country road trip from Florida to Nevada, we made a stop in Santa Fe, New Mexico, to visit Meow Wolf, the original one. I had always wanted to experience it, so we decided to stay the night in town. Santa Fe has such a charming, artsy vibe and I wanted to soak that in. After a little research, I found Las Palomas, a boutique hotel that looked so cozy and had great reviews, especially for its breakfast.

A Charming Little Hideaway

Las Palomas is located just a short walk from downtown Santa Fe, close to many restaurants and shops. The property has a cute village-like layout with small paths that lead to each room. Our room, number nine, was tucked away in its own little nook with a small private gate. It was perfect for a bit of privacy and great for my dog Kuma.

Inside the Room

We stayed in a king-bed room that came with a cozy fireplace, rustic furniture, and turquoise accents that gave it that signature Santa Fe look. The bed was a bit squeaky and not the most comfortable, but it was fine for one night. The room itself was on the darker side, which made unpacking a little tricky, but I did love the cute little bench nook and the hooks along the wall (though they are best for lighter items).

There was also a small sitting area that we mostly used to store our luggage and a working TV that we did not end up turning on because we were too tired from exploring Meow Wolf.

The Kitchenette

One of my favorite parts of the room was the kitchenette. It came with a small stove, microwave, toaster, coffee maker, and even a retro-style mini fridge that worked really well. They also provided pots, pans, utensils, plates, and glasses. Having this little setup made it easier to prep meals for Kuma and enjoy a simple snack or coffee in the morning.

The Bathroom

The bathroom was surprisingly nice. I loved the blue-turquoise tiles that gave it a New Mexico feel. The shower looked newly renovated, although the water control handle was a little tricky to figure out. I appreciated that they had plenty of hooks, a magnifying mirror, and even a fan, which is rare in hotel bathrooms these days.

The Breakfast

Breakfast is served daily from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. back at the main building, just a quick two-minute walk away. They offer a set menu with a few options such as a breakfast burrito, pancakes, or a traditional breakfast plate. Tyrone got the burrito while I tried the corn flour pancakes, which were good but not very filling. They also had extras like bagels, fruit, and pastries.

When we checked in, they gave us a small frozen lemonade shot, along with homemade chips and cookies for guests. It was a nice touch.

Other Amenities

Las Palomas has a small fitness room, guest laundry, and an ice machine. The property is also pet friendly, which was a big reason I chose it. Kuma was very comfortable here.

One thing to note is that check-in is at a different building from where the rooms are located, but it is well explained and easy to find. They give you a laminated map with all the details and access codes for the gates.

The Not-So-Great Parts

My biggest complaint was the strong cleaning product smell, specifically Fabuloso. It hit me as soon as I walked in, and it is a scent I have a hard time tolerating. It gave me a bit of an allergic reaction, so that was tough. The other downside was the bed comfort, but for one night it was manageable.

Overall, Las Palomas was a cute and convenient place to stay for our Santa Fe stopover. I loved the charming layout, private little outdoor space, and pet-friendly vibe. The kitchenette and complimentary breakfast were definite bonuses, and the location made it easy to explore downtown Santa Fe and Meow Wolf.

Every year, my friend Kathy (from Darling Traveler) and I plan a European adventure together. We’ve explored cities like Prague, Paris, and Istanbul, but this year we decided to go somewhere that’s often overlooked: Bucharest, Romania.

We spent four days exploring this beautiful and affordable city filled with old-world charm, grand architecture, and friendly people. From its cozy cafés and fairytale castles to an unforgettable day trip across the border, this itinerary has everything you need to experience the best of Bucharest and beyond.

Arrival Evening – First Taste of Bucharest

We landed in Bucharest in the evening and checked into our cozy Airbnb downtown. The apartment had two balconies, and every morning a pair of doves would visit, hoping to be fed. Our host even left birdseed for them, which made the stay feel extra charming.

That night, we had dinner at Trattoria Colosseum, a colorful Italian restaurant with bright umbrellas hanging above the tables. The food was delicious, and the cocktails were surprisingly strong.

After dinner, we stopped by The Vault, a bar built inside an old bank vault complete with rows of metal safe boxes. It had a cool and unique atmosphere, making it a fun place to start our trip.

Day 1 – Exploring Bucharest and Evening at Therme București

Our first full day began with breakfast at Bread & Butter, a cozy café with excellent food and friendly service. Afterward, we joined a walking tour of Old Town to get our bearings and learn more about Bucharest’s mix of neoclassical buildings, wide boulevards, and communist-era architecture.

We had lunch at Alt Shift, a modern restaurant with great reviews that we couldn’t get into the night before. It lived up to the hype and made for the perfect midday break.

That evening, we called a Bolt (the local equivalent of Uber) to Therme București, the largest thermal spa in Europe. It’s about an hour away depending on traffic. The spa is massive, with multiple pools, saunas, water slides, and relaxation areas. You get a wristband that acts as your wallet, so you can scan it for food, drinks, and locker access.

While the space is impressive, it was quite crowded. The infrared light therapy beds were my favorite area because they were calm and relaxing. If you plan to go, visit on a weekday or early in the day for a more peaceful experience.

We ended the evening with dinner at Saray, a Turkish restaurant that served flavorful dishes and had warm, welcoming service.

Day 2 – Castles of Romania: Peleș, Brașov, and Bran

Day two was one of our most anticipated experiences: a 12-hour guided tour through Romania’s countryside.

Our first stop was Peleș Castle, a fairytale palace surrounded by forested mountains. The intricate wood carvings and stained-glass windows were breathtaking, and it’s hard to imagine this was once a royal residence.

Next, we stopped in Brașov, a charming medieval city with colorful buildings and a Hollywood-style “Brașov” sign perched on the hill. We had lunch in the town square before heading to the final stop, Bran Castle, famously known as Dracula’s Castle.

Bran Castle was packed with visitors, so prepare for narrow staircases and some waiting. Still, it’s an unforgettable place to visit, especially with the surrounding mountain views.

We returned to Bucharest around 7 p.m. and went to Caru’ cu Bere for dinner. This restaurant is one of Bucharest’s most iconic spots, known for its ornate interior and traditional Romanian performances. We made reservations in advance, which was smart since it’s always busy. If you can, plan your visit for a weekend evening. We went on a Saturday when the dances started at 9 p.m., and the show was full of energy and culture.

Day 3 – A Day Trip to Bulgaria and Rooftop Dinner

We joined another 12-hour tour, this time crossing the border into Bulgaria. The drive to the border took about an hour, and passport checks were done randomly, so be sure to bring yours.

Our first stop was the Holy Trinity Cathedral Church in the quaint Old Town of Ruse, where we admired the peaceful atmosphere and elegant architecture. Next, we headed to Arbanasi Village, a picturesque town perched on a high plateau. This area offers stunning views of the surrounding hills and is filled with medieval buildings that date back centuries.

The third stop was the Tsarevets Fortress, one of Bulgaria’s most important historical sites. The views from the top were incredible and gave us a real sense of the country’s medieval past.

Our final stop was Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria’s former medieval capital. The cobblestone streets and hillside homes created a beautiful and nostalgic setting. We grabbed some coffee and souvenirs here before making our way back to Bucharest.

That night, we had dinner at Linea / Closer to the Moon, a stunning rooftop restaurant with transparent domes that overlook the city. From our table, we had an incredible panoramic view of Bucharest’s Old Town. The atmosphere was absolutely perfect and the espresso martini I ordered was one of the best I’ve ever had. The food was just as impressive, beautifully presented and full of flavor, and the service was outstanding. Everything felt polished yet welcoming, and it ended up being one of my favorite restaurants in Bucharest.

Day 4 – Cafés, Architecture, and Old Town Charm

Our last full day in Bucharest was dedicated to exploring more of the city’s highlights.

We started with coffee at First Coffee Bucharest before heading to the famous Cărturești Carusel bookstore, one of the most beautiful bookstores in Europe. The architecture and spiral staircases make it a photographer’s dream.

We continued sightseeing with stops at the Romanian Athenaeum and Grand Café Van Gogh, a bright and airy spot perfect for a coffee break. Later, we grabbed some sweet treats at Love You Choux, a pastry shop that specializes in cream-filled desserts.

In the afternoon, we took a Bolt ride to the Primăverii neighborhood. During Romania’s communist era, this was where the country’s leaders and elite lived. Today, it remains one of Bucharest’s most upscale areas, with tree-lined streets and stately homes. Visiting this neighborhood gives you a fascinating glimpse into how the communist elite once lived, especially if you stop by Nicolae Ceaușescu’s mansion, which is now a museum.

We ended our final night with dinner and drinks at Nomad Skybar, a stylish rooftop spot in Old Town with great food and lively music.

Departure Morning

The next morning, I had an early flight back home while Kathy’s flight was later in the afternoon. I took a Bolt at 5:30 a.m. for my 8:30 a.m. flight, which took about 25 minutes since there was no traffic. During rush hour, the same ride can take twice as long, so plan ahead if your flight is later in the day.

Final Thoughts on Bucharest

Four days in Bucharest was the perfect amount of time to explore the city and enjoy a couple of incredible day trips. From the ornate architecture and cozy cafés to the scenic countryside and medieval towns, Romania offers a mix of experiences that make every day feel new.

What stood out most was how friendly and welcoming everyone was. The food was consistently great, and the prices were much more affordable compared to other European capitals.
