Tokyo Tower is one of those iconic landmarks you see in so many photos of Tokyo, but what we loved most about visiting this area was realizing how much there is to do nearby. Instead of only going straight to the tower, we explored the surrounding neighborhood through a relaxed walking route filled with parks, temples, shrines, museums, modern architecture, and plenty of Tokyo Tower views along the way.

We stayed at The Prince Park Tower Tokyo, which made this area especially easy to explore since Shiba Park and Tokyo Tower were right outside our hotel.

Shiba Park

Shiba Park is a peaceful, lush urban oasis nestled right in the shadow of the iconic Tokyo Tower. We booked our stay at The Prince Park Tower Tokyo, which is located along the southern edge of the park, and we were lucky enough to have a clear, amazing view of Tokyo Tower right from our hotel room.

The park itself is massive, but one of our favorite areas was the grassy lawn directly in front of the hotel. We saw so many people lounging, picnicking, and taking photos of Tokyo Tower from this spot. It is a great place to relax, slow down, and enjoy the view without feeling like you are in the middle of a busy city.

If you want to add a historical landmark to your visit, you can also walk over to the Former Daitokuin Reibyo Somon Gate. This historic gateway once marked the entrance to Daitokuin Temple, an important cultural site connected to the Tokugawa family.

The Tokugawa family is significant because they ruled Japan for over 250 years, during a period known as the Edo period. This long era helped shape much of Japan’s culture, politics, and society, making this small gate an interesting historical stop within Shiba Park.

Zojoji Temple

You can’t miss Zojoji Temple when visiting Shiba Park. It took us a while to actually make our way to the temple grounds from our hotel, not because it was a long walk, but because we kept stopping along the way. We grabbed breakfast at Le Pain Quotidien, took photos around the park, and kept getting distracted by all the beautiful views of Tokyo Tower.

Once we reached the temple grounds, it felt peaceful and spacious. Right behind the temple, Tokyo Tower stands tall in the background, creating one of the most iconic views in the area.

It is such a great photo spot, especially if you love capturing traditional architecture with the modern Tokyo skyline. We also visited right around cherry blossom season, so we were lucky enough to see some of the trees just starting to bloom.

The temple itself has a long history and is an important Buddhist temple in Tokyo. We enjoyed walking around slowly, taking in the details, and seeing the rows of small Jizo statues dressed in colorful hats and bibs at the Garden of Unborn Children.

Since Zojoji Temple is right next to Shiba Park, it is an easy stop to visit before or after exploring the park. It also adds a meaningful cultural stop to a Tokyo Tower walking itinerary, especially because you get that beautiful mix of old and new Tokyo in one place.

NHK Broadcasting Museum

The NHK Broadcasting Museum was such a fun stop for us, and we actually decided to go here on a whim while we were eating breakfast and discussing our plan for the day. The museum focuses on the history of broadcasting in Japan, including radio, television, and NHK’s role in Japanese media.

Since we grew up in Japan, we watched a ton of shows on NHK when we were kids. Our mom even got us on a famous children’s educational program called Okaasan to Issho (Together with Mama), which was super popular at the time. Visiting this museum definitely brought back so many memories, and the best part is that it is completely free.

Even if you are not familiar with any of the shows broadcast on NHK, it is still a fun and interactive museum. There were sections where you could act like a real news broadcaster or weather reporter, complete with a teleprompter, lights, cameras, and a full studio setup. We spent so much time here pretending to be news anchors and had the best time.

This is not one of those super touristy Tokyo attractions, which made it feel a little more local and low-key. We enjoyed browsing the exhibits and seeing vintage broadcasting equipment, old televisions, cameras, and displays related to Japanese TV history. It is also a nice indoor stop if you want a short break from walking, especially on a rainy day or hot afternoon.

Atago Jinja

Atago Jinja wasn’t initially on our itinerary, but when we exited the NHK Broadcasting Museum, we realized it was located right across the way. Since it was so close, we thought we should give it a quick visit before heading toward Toranomon Hills, Tokyo Tower, or another nearby stop.

It definitely ended up being a quick stop since the shrine area is fairly small, and it was also raining, so we didn’t want to wander around outside for too long.

Even though our visit was brief, Atago Jinja ended up being a memorable stop because it feels so tucked away from the busy streets, despite being right in the middle of Tokyo. The shrine is known for its steep stone staircase, often called the “Steps to Success.” Luckily, we were already at the top of the stairs when we arrived because it is definitely a bit of a climb. The view from the top of the staircase is gorgeous, with the city stretching out below.

The shrine grounds have a serene atmosphere, and it is a great place to slow down for a few minutes before continuing on to Toranomon Hills or Tokyo Tower. If you are putting together a walking itinerary in this area, Atago Jinja is a beautiful little detour to include.

Toranomon Hills - Mori Tower

Mori Tower gave us a completely different feel from the temples, shrines, and parks we visited around the Tokyo Tower area. After spending time around Shiba Park, Zojoji Temple, and Atago Jinja, it was interesting to step into such a sleek and modern side of Tokyo. The area is filled with tall buildings, restaurants, shops, office spaces, and polished outdoor plazas, giving it a very upscale, contemporary energy.

One of the standout features outside in Oval Plaza is “Roots,” a striking 10-meter-tall sculpture of a seated figure. The sculpture is made up of letters and characters from eight different languages, symbolizing global diversity, peaceful coexistence, and cultural connection. It fits perfectly with the international and forward-thinking feel of the Toranomon area.

There are also plenty of dining options here, which makes it a great place to stop for a meal, coffee, or a quick break. The choices can feel a little overwhelming because there are so many restaurants, with cuisine ranging from Japanese to Thai and more.

What we loved most about the interior of Mori Tower was how beautifully it blurred the line between indoors and outdoors. With towering glass walls, lush garden beds, and warm wood-paneled terraces overhead, the space felt bright, airy, and open, almost like an urban oasis, but with all the comfort of being inside.

If you enjoy seeing both the traditional and modern sides of Tokyo in one day, adding Toranomon Hills to your Tokyo Tower walking itinerary makes the route feel more complete. It is a nice contrast to the quieter temples and shrines nearby and gives you a glimpse of Tokyo’s more polished, contemporary side.

Tokyo Tower: The Perfect Final Stop

We saved Tokyo Tower as the final stop in this guide, and it made the perfect ending to our time exploring the area. We grew up in Japan, so we could not believe that we had never actually gone inside Tokyo Tower before. It is funny how sometimes the places you live near, or see all the time, are the ones you end up not visiting for some reason.

After taking in the sweeping views of the Tokyo Tower from the outside, it was finally time to explore its interior up close. There are a few different ticket options when visiting Tokyo Tower, and we purchased tickets that included access to both the Main Deck and the Top Deck. The Main Deck was spacious and did not feel overly crowded at all. There was plenty of room to take in the views without feeling rushed.

Even though we spent a little extra to get access to the Top Deck, we actually enjoyed the Main Deck much more. The Top Deck was fairly small and the views didn’t feel that much better than what we had on the Main Deck. They try to make the trip up there feel special by offering a complimentary drink and a quick photo-op, but that part passes so quickly it hardly seems worth it.

We received a card with instructions on how to obtain a digital copy of the photo that had been taken, but for some reason the QR code wouldn’t scan when I tried. I should have given it another go, but when you’re traveling, small things like that often slip my mind because my brain is so exhausted and drained by the end of the day.

After enjoying the views, we headed back downstairs where there were a variety of shops and eateries. We also came across a fun machine that printed out a newspaper front page from the day you were born. We thought this was such a cute idea and decided to give it a try. Of course, it was all written in Japanese, but with Google Translate, it was easy to read the headlines and see what was happening on our birthdays.

Once we exited Tokyo Tower, the tower was glowing in its bright red-orange color against the evening sky. It was such a beautiful sight as we walked back to our hotel. After finally going inside and learning more about it during our visit, we definitely left with a greater appreciation for Tokyo Tower.

Final Thoughts on Exploring the Tokyo Tower Area

This ended up being such a fun and easy area of Tokyo to explore, especially because there was such a nice mix of nature, history, modern architecture, and classic Tokyo Tower views. We visited peaceful temples and shrines, stopped by the NHK Broadcasting Museum, walked through the sleek and modern Toranomon Hills area, and finally went inside Tokyo Tower.

What we loved most about this area was how much variety there was without having to travel very far. You can see a quieter, more traditional side of Tokyo at places like Zojoji Temple and Atago Jinja, then walk a short distance and be surrounded by the polished, modern energy of Toranomon Hills.

Even though you could visit many of these spots in one day, we personally spread them out and enjoyed the area at a slower pace. That made it feel less rushed and gave us more time to take photos, stop for food, explore indoors when it rained, and appreciate the views of Tokyo Tower from different angles.

If you are planning to visit Tokyo Tower, we definitely recommend giving yourself extra time to explore the surrounding area instead of only going to the tower itself. There is so much to see nearby, and this route is a great way to experience both the nostalgic and modern sides of Tokyo.

When planning our latest trip to Tokyo, we decided to stay somewhere different.

Over the years we've stayed in Shinjuku, Shibuya, Ginza, and several other popular areas. While we still love those neighborhoods, we wanted something a little quieter this time around.

That's what led us to Akasaka.

After spending three days exploring the area, we completely understood why more travelers are recommending it. Akasaka feels central and convenient, but without the overwhelming crowds you'll find in some of Tokyo's most famous districts.

If you're wondering whether Akasaka is worth visiting or staying in, here are our favorite things to do in Akasaka, Tokyo.

Why We Chose to Stay in Akasaka

One of the biggest reasons we picked Akasaka was its location.

It's easy to reach popular areas like Shibuya, Shinjuku, Omotesando, and Ginza, while still feeling noticeably calmer and less touristy.

You'll still see plenty of locals, office workers, and neighborhood cafes, which gave us a more authentic Tokyo experience than some of the busier areas we've stayed in recently.

One thing to know before booking your hotel: Akasaka has hills.

The name Akasaka roughly translates to "Red Hill," and you'll definitely notice the elevation changes while exploring the neighborhood. Fortunately, we found the hills manageable and never felt overwhelmed by them.

Where We Stayed in Akasaka

For this trip, we stayed at Mimaru Tokyo Akasaka.

The location worked perfectly for us because nearly everything we wanted to see was within walking distance.

The staff also provided excellent recommendations for local restaurants and cafes, which helped us discover several places we may have otherwise missed.

Best Cafes in Akasaka

Ueshima Coffee House

One challenge we often encounter in Japan is finding breakfast early in the morning.

Many cafes and restaurants don't open until 9:00 AM or later.

That's why we loved Ueshima Coffee House.

It opens at 6:30 AM and offers a full breakfast menu rather than just coffee and pastries.

Our breakfast sets included toast, eggs, mini salad, bacon, and coffee. It was the perfect way to start a day of exploring Tokyo. The seating was very cozy as well.

Bun Coffee

Located near our hotel, Bun Coffee is ideal if you're looking for a quick grab-and-go coffee.

The space is tiny, but the coffee was excellent and made for an easy stop before heading out for the day.

Tokyo Little House

This was one of our favorite discoveries in Akasaka.

Tokyo Little House is located inside a preserved historic home surrounded by modern buildings.

Part cafe, part museum, and part accommodation, it offers visitors a glimpse into Tokyo's past while serving excellent coffee.

Inside you'll find:

• Vintage displays

• Traditional architecture

• A unique atmosphere that feels completely different from the surrounding city

If you're looking for a memorable coffee experience in Akasaka, this is one of the best places to visit and the staff are extremely friendly here.

Aoyama Flower Market Tea House

This may have been the most beautiful cafe we visited during our stay. Filled with flowers and plants, the entire space feels like a greenhouse.

If you're looking for a relaxing place to enjoy breakfast, tea, or coffee, this cafe is worth adding to your itinerary. It’s also located conveniently next to Akasaka Station, making it a perfect, hassle‑free way to start your day if you’re planning to hop on a train.

Visit Hie Shrine

No trip to Akasaka would be complete without visiting Hie Shrine.

The shrine has become increasingly popular because of its beautiful red torii gates, which remind many visitors of Kyoto's famous Fushimi Inari Shrine.

What we liked most about Hie Shrine is that it offers a similar experience without the overwhelming crowds. We did have to wait our turn to snap a few photos, but the line was thankfully very minimal.

• Enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding city

And if you're not in the mood to climb stairs, you'll be happy to know there's a convenient escalator that carries visitors up to the shrine. We actually really enjoyed this stretch of the walk. The sweeping views of the cityscape along the way were absolutely gorgeous.

Explore the Harry Potter Area

One of the biggest surprises in Akasaka was discovering how much Harry Potter-themed entertainment exists around Akasaka Station.

You don’t have to be a huge Harry Potter fan to find this fun themed area worth exploring. We thoroughly enjoyed wandering through this station every time we headed back to our hotel. If you’ve watched the movies, it’s a special spot where the entire neighborhood comes alive with the playful magic and atmosphere of Harry Potter. We enjoyed snapping photos and stepping into a whimsical Harry Potter style theme park (minus the theme park entrance fee, of course!).

Even if you're only a casual fan, it's worth checking out.

The Harry Potter store recently reopened its doors and during our visit, many of the items featured seasonal cherry blossom designs that were exclusive to Japan. Of course, we fell for the adorable pink sakura-themed merch and bought a handful of items.

Visit Toyokawa Inari Tokyo Betsuin

This was one of our favorite discoveries during the trip. Unlike many shrines that emphasize traditional architecture, Toyokawa Inari is especially famous for its numerous fox statues. Scattered throughout the grounds are rows of fox figures, each bearing different symbolic meanings and subtle variations.

From the outside the shrine appears quite massive, but once we began exploring it revealed a surprisingly intimate atmosphere. Every time we turned a corner we stumbled across another visually interesting detail that made wandering the site feel endlessly rewarding.

Experience Traditional Japanese Sweets at Toraya

If we had to pick one place that surprised us most during our stay, it would be Toraya.

Toraya is one of Japan's most famous traditional confectionery brands, specializing in wagashi (Japanese sweets). The Toraya Akasaka flagship store is a modern architectural masterpiece designed by architect Hiroshi Naito, and it’s truly breathtaking. The clean lines, thoughtful use of materials, and serene atmosphere create a space that feels both contemporary and timeless.

We didn’t make a reservation for their tea room, so our chances of getting a table were uncertain, but because we visited on a rainy weekday, we actually got seated right away. When we were shown to our table, it felt like we’d been given a special VIP spot: a cozy, private dining area where we could relax and enjoy our meal in peace.

The experience includes:

• A tea room serving seasonal Japanese sweets

• A free gallery detailing the company's history

During our visit, the cherry blossom themed sweets and matcha drinks were particularly popular. Crystal declared it the best damn iced matcha she has ever had in her life and that says a lot, because she’s a true matcha connoisseur.

After enjoying our delicate Japanese desserts, we wandered downstairs to the shop to pick up a few souvenirs. Everything is presented so beautifully and thoughtfully that it tempts you to buy almost everything. Our little sister chose a handful of sweet mementos, and because it was raining, the staff took extra care to wrap her paper bag in a protective plastic cover. Now that’s what we call truly top‑notch customer service.

Then we headed down one more flight of stairs to their gallery. And wow. The architecture down here was absolutely stunning. We had the entire place to ourselves and couldn’t believe this little gem wasn’t flooded with people. We learned quite a bit about the long history of Toraya and came away with a deeper appreciation for the craft and artistry behind traditional Japanese sweets.

Even if you aren’t a fan of traditional Japanese desserts (like Crystal), Toraya is still worth visiting for the cultural experience alone. The basement gallery’s interior space was fascinating in its own right, and the souvenir store added another layer of interest with detailed information and history about the ingredients used in their sweets and explanations of what makes them so unique.

Best Restaurants in Akasaka

Sumibiyaki Usagiya

This small underground yakitori restaurant ended up serving some of the best grilled chicken skewers we had during our trip. We stumbled upon it on a whim while searching for a place to eat near Toraya. We were starving and didn’t want to walk far, so the cozy, off-the-beaten-path spot felt like a perfect find.

The atmosphere feels wonderfully local, intimate, and genuinely authentic. We arrived just as they opened, so we practically had the whole place to ourselves for the first half hour or so.

Sometimes stepping into these underground izakaya can feel a little intimidating because they’re such authentic local spots, but we were pleasantly surprised to be warmly welcomed.

Just be aware that English support is limited here, so having a translation app ready can be really helpful. Fortunately, we all speak and read fluent Japanese, so we didn’t have any issues placing our orders. Many of the dishes we ordered were slightly omakase style, so it was often a pleasant mystery what we were going to be served.

Umaya

Tucked away from the hustle and bustle of the city, Umaya is a beautifully renovated traditional three-story wooden house with charming details and a calm, inviting atmosphere. This was by far one of our favorite lunch spots during the trip. After a couple of unsatisfying lunches, we were really looking forward to a meal that we would genuinely enjoy.

We hadn’t made a reservation (which is recommended), so we went in with little hope of getting a table, but to our surprise we only had to wait about ten minutes. Maybe it’s the time of year or perhaps we were just lucky, but every place we feared we wouldn’t be able to get into turned out to be fine.

The restaurant is unique because it’s renowned for its association with a famous kabuki actor, a tidbit we discovered while waiting for our table.

The food served here is hearty Japanese comfort dishes, exactly the kind of meals we especially crave whenever we visit home. I (Candy) was so happy to see that they had tonjiru (pork and vegetable miso soup) on the menu. It’s one of my favorite comfort foods on chilly days and instantly felt like a warm, familiar hug.

Highlights include:

• Tatami-style rooms

• Garden views

• Excellent set meals

• Private and high end feel without being stuffy

Nikujiru Gyoza no Dandadan

If you're craving gyoza, this is absolutely the place to go. We both LOVE gyoza and were so happy to stumble upon this charming little joint while walking back to our hotel. Before we found it by chance, we’d been in our hotel room searching the internet for gyoza spots and, oddly, this place never appeared in our results.

We’re so glad we got our gyoza fix here. They offered a wide variety of different gyoza dishes, each more tempting than the last. There was a bit of a line forming outside the entrance, but the wait was no more than ten minutes.

The restaurant felt lively and friendly, packed mostly with locals, which always feels like a good sign. The menu focuses on all things gyoza and beer, making it a relaxed, delicious choice for a casual meal after a day of sightseeing.

Is Akasaka Worth Visiting?

Absolutely.

What we loved most about Akasaka was the balance.

It offers:

This wasn’t one of those trips where it was sunny and perfect every day. We had several rainy days, temperatures mostly in the 50s to low 60s Fahrenheit, and lots of outfit layering changes throughout the trip. Some outfits worked perfectly, while others definitely taught us a few lessons.

Tokyo Weather in Late March

One thing that surprised us was how easy Tokyo was to walk around in the rain. Japan’s drainage system is excellent, so we rarely encountered puddles. Even on rainy days, the sidewalks had great traction and we never felt like we were slipping while walking downhill.

How We Plan Our Japan Outfits Before the Trip

One thing that helps us avoid overpacking is planning our outfits ahead of time in a shared Google document.

We’ll usually map out:

• What we’re wearing each day

• Which areas we’ll be exploring

• Weather forecasts

• Which shoes work best

• Layering combinations

This helps us narrow down exactly what we need instead of throwing random clothes into a suitcase “just in case.” It also helps us mix and match pieces more efficiently.

For this trip especially, layering became really important because the weather changed constantly throughout the day.

Crystal’s Tokyo Outfits

For the Tokyo Tower area, I wanted to lean into my current obsession with ties and collared shirts.

I wore a reddish striped button-down shirt paired with a black pleated skirt and one of the snap-on bow ties I found on Amazon. I loved how the bow tie instantly made the outfit feel more styled and playful without requiring me to actually tie anything.

I layered the outfit with an oversized black blazer and ribbed cotton tights and this was perfect for the evenings when the temperatures dropped.

For shoes, I wore my Marcella boots that I've had for years and they've been on multiple trips to Japan, London, and around the U.S. What I love most is the side zipper, which makes them easy to take on and off when entering homes or apartment-style accommodations in Japan.

While Marcella no longer makes this exact style, their current boot collection has a similar modern aesthetic that I still love.

One evening while visiting Tokyo Tower, I changed into my tiger sweatshirt from SHEIN and paired it with my Anthropologie Tilda Maxi Skirt.

This was actually my first time ordering from SHEIN. I loved the tiger design and received several compliments during the trip, but I could definitely tell the quality wasn't on the same level as sweatshirts I own from Alo or Anthropologie. The material felt thinner and less structured, but visually it worked really well.

The Tilda skirt continues to be one of my favorite travel pieces because it's lightweight, easy to pack, and works across multiple seasons.

One of my best pieces from this trip was my green LOFT bomber jacket. This bomber jacket practically saved the trip. I had been searching for an army green bomber jacket for a while, and this one ended up being perfect for Tokyo’s unpredictable weather.

I especially loved the zippered sleeve pocket because I could easily store small essentials like AirPods, Chapstick, and other small accessories.

Candy’s Tokyo Outfits

Since it wasn’t raining during our first couple days in Tokyo, I took advantage of the dry weather and wore my favorite white wide-leg pants from Express. These pants have been one of my go-to travel staples for years.

The reason I avoid wearing them on rainy days is because the hems are long enough to brush the ground slightly, which can become a problem once the fabric starts absorbing rainwater.

I paired the pants with the Marcella Palmer Knit Top layered over a Uniqlo HeatTech shirt underneath for warmth.

The Marcella top has a really unique sculptural silhouette with oversized sleeves and an architectural shape that makes it feel much more elevated than a basic sweater. It photographs beautifully and gives the outfit a more fashion-forward look while still being comfortable enough for walking around Tokyo all day.

One challenge with the Palmer Knit Top, though, is that the sleeve shape makes it difficult to layer under jackets comfortably. Because of that, it works best on dry spring days where you don’t need heavy outerwear. Still, visually, this ended up being one of my favorite looks from the trip.

Another one of my outfits featured striped Sezane trousers paired with a simple white Quince t-shirt and a fluffy cropped cardigan from Lisa Says Gah.

One thing I loved about these trousers was the adjustable waist detail. After eating my way through Tokyo, having a little flexibility in the waistband was definitely appreciated.

The cardigan added warmth while still allowing the high-waisted trousers to remain the focus of the outfit.

My New Travel Purse for Tokyo

One newer piece I brought on this trip was my Coach Bleecker Bucket Bag.

On previous Japan trips, I usually relied on tote bags because I like having enough room for all my daily essentials. Since Tokyo days usually involve a lot of walking, train rides, shopping, snacks, and random convenience store stops, I was a little nervous about switching to a smaller bag.

But the bucket bag ended up working out great. It still fit everything I needed for the day without feeling bulky. I also liked that it felt a little more polished with my outfits, especially with the Sezane trousers, wide-leg pants, and layered cardigan looks.

The Shoe Mistake

One of the biggest lessons from this trip involved shoes.

I packed red Sam Edelman Mary Jane flats because I already own the same style in black and cream and both are incredibly comfortable. Even if it’s technically the same shoe model, I guess different colors and materials can sometimes fit differently.

Unfortunately, the red version fit differently and ended up hurting my feet badly.

After one day, I switched back to my Adidas Sambas for the rest of the trip.

Rainy Days in Tokyo: What Actually Worked

Once we checked into our next hotel in Akasaka, the weather shifted and we experienced rain for several days straight.

This completely changed how we layered.

Crystal’s Rainy Day Outfits

Once we moved to Akasaka, the weather completely changed and we ended up dealing with rain for several days straight. One of my favorite outfits from the trip was actually something I hadn't originally planned to wear together.

I started with my Quince cashmere mini dress, which is one of the most comfortable travel pieces I own. It's soft, cozy, and easy to dress up or down depending on the weather. Since temperatures were mostly in the 50s, I wore ribbed tights underneath along with my Marcella boots for extra warmth.

For outerwear, I layered a lightweight Zara hooded jacket underneath my LOFT bomber jacket. This combination happened almost by accident. I originally packed the Zara jacket for rain protection and the bomber jacket for cooler temperatures, but wearing them together ended up being the perfect solution for Tokyo's chilly, rainy weather.

Originally I planned to wear boots because of the rain, but at the last minute I switched to my Converse. To my surprise, the Converse worked perfectly. Tokyo's drainage system is excellent, and I rarely encountered puddles even after hours of rain.

By our final clear day in Akasaka, I was ready to wear one of the outfits I had been most excited about packing. What I didn't realize at the time was that it would end up fitting perfectly with Akasaka's Harry Potter-themed area near the train station.

To keep with my tie obsession, I added a striped zip tie and paired everything with the same black pleated skirt I had worn earlier in the trip. Candy’s Rainy Day Outfits

Once the rain arrived in Akasaka, my outfit strategy became much simpler. Instead of planning completely different outfits each day, I focused on building around a few core pieces and changing my outerwear depending on the weather.

For most of the rainy days, I wore my favorite J.Crew wide-leg jeans paired with a Quince t-shirt and a Uniqlo HeatTech layer underneath. These jeans ended up being one of the best pieces I packed because the length was perfect for wet weather. They were long enough to look polished but didn't drag on the ground like some of my other pants.

The piece I reached for most often was my striped trench coat from Favorite Daughter. It was lightweight, easy to move around in, and worked well for Tokyo's cool spring temperatures. Because we were constantly walking, I found that I didn't need as many heavy layers as I originally expected. Even on rainy days, I would often warm up once we started exploring.

As temperatures dropped in the evenings, I would layer my Lisa Says Gah cardigan underneath the trench coat for extra warmth. I loved how the cardigan added texture and made the outfit feel a little more styled without sacrificing comfort.

To keep things from feeling repetitive, I occasionally swapped the trench coat for my Quince Comfort Stretch Mac Coat. The longer silhouette gave the outfit a slightly different look while still providing the same practical protection from the rain. Between those two jackets, I felt prepared for just about every weather condition we encountered during our stay in Akasaka.

One thing I noticed on this trip is that rainy weather in Tokyo wasn't nearly as difficult to dress for as I expected. Since we spent so much time walking, I found that lightweight layers worked much better than bulky coats. Being able to add or remove pieces throughout the day made a huge difference, especially when moving between chilly streets and warm indoor spaces.

What We Would Pack Differently for Tokyo in March 

Tokyo in late March can be a little unpredictable. Some days felt comfortable and sunny, while others were cold, rainy, and windy. While we were generally happy with our overall choices, the trip still taught us a lot about flexibility and there are definitely a few adjustments we would make next time.

Opting for Standalone Versatility Over Fixed Outfits

Even though we pre-plan every outfit to ensure we only bring what we’ll actually wear, the realities of travel can still throw a wrench in those plans. The one piece I (Candy) packed but didn’t end up wearing was a red wrap cardigan.

It was specifically planned around my red Mary Jane shoes, but once those shoes started hurting my feet, the entire cohesive look fell apart. I was really bummed they didn't work out for Tokyo. Interestingly, I have the exact same pair in black and wore those everywhere around Osaka with zero comfort issues!

It was a great reminder that even the most carefully planned outfits sometimes have to change once you arrive. Next time, instead of packing a piece that relies entirely on one specific pair of shoes to work, I'd make sure every clothing item can easily pivot into a backup outfit with my most reliable walking shoes.

The biggest thing we learned from this trip was just how important thoughtful layering is for staying comfortable all day.

Even though we carefully plan our outfits before every Japan trip, we still ended up making changes throughout the week depending on:

But overall, these outfits worked really well for exploring Tokyo neighborhoods like Tokyo Tower and Akasaka while still feeling stylish and comfortable.

Packing for a long flight to Japan is one of those things I take very seriously.

I know some people can get on a plane with just their passport, phone, and headphones and feel totally fine. I am not that person.

I like to be prepared, especially when I’m flying from Los Angeles to Narita, which is almost a 12-hour flight. I get anxious when I fly, so having the right things with me helps me feel a little more relaxed. I don’t need everything to go perfectly, but I do like knowing I have the essentials with me just in case something happens.

For this trip, I packed everything in my Lo & Sons Melrose Backpack, which has been one of my favorite travel backpacks because it is sleek, organized, and has a detachable pouch that can be used as a purse.

My Carry-On Backpack for Japan

For this flight, I used my Lo & Sons Melrose Backpack.

What I love about this backpack is that it has several compartments, so everything has a place. I use different sections for different categories: important items, flight essentials, liquids, camera gear, tech, and a backup outfit.

The top pouch is especially useful because it detaches and turns into a small purse. This is one of my favorite features because I usually book an exit row seat, and I like to keep my most important items with me at the seat instead of having to reach up into the overhead bin.

Once I get settled, I can keep the small pouch with me, put my jacket over it, and have everything I need within reach.

What I Keep in the Detachable Pouch

This is where I keep the items I want easy access to during the flight. A couple of these items focus on hydration, since long-haul flights tend to leave my skin feeling very dry.

Tissues

I always keep tissues with me. Yes, you can usually ask for tissues on the plane, but I hate having to ask for things if I can just bring them myself.

Flights are also usually cold, and for some reason I always end up needing tissues, so this is one of those small things I never forget.

Hand Lotion

My hands get extremely dry on long flights, so lotion is a must for me.

I usually keep this in my jacket pocket so I don’t have to dig around for it during the flight. It’s one of those little comfort items that makes a big difference when you’re sitting on a plane for hours.

Lip Balms

I like to bring a moisturizing lip balm because my lips get super chapped on long-haul flights. My go-to is Fresh Sugar’s Lip Treatment Balm.

I don’t wear much makeup during the flight, but before we arrive, I like to freshen up a little. I like to add a little color to my lips before landing and Violette_FR’s Bisou Balm is really easy to apply. It’s a sheer matte lipstick with a hydrating balm. This balm adds a flush of color with a subtle blurring effect for a just-been-kissed lip look.

Travel Wallet for Japan

For most international trips, I do not always bring a full wallet. But for Japan, I do.

Japan still has a lot of places where cash is useful, especially smaller shops, local restaurants, temples, shrines, markets, and random little places that may not take credit cards.

I also always end up with a lot of coins in Japan. Every single trip, it happens.

That’s why I like using a wallet with a coin pouch. Mine also has separate sections, so I can keep Japanese yen on one side and U.S. dollars on the other. It makes it much easier to stay organized when I’m going back and forth between currencies.

Small Medication Pouch

I also bring a small pouch with over-the-counter medications.

Inside, I usually keep things like:

• Advil

• Dramamine

• Imodium

• NyQuil

• Allergy medicine

• Gum

• Alcohol wipes

• Small plastic bags

Japan has pharmacies and over-the-counter medication readily available, so it is not like you cannot buy things once you arrive. But when I’m on a 12-hour flight, I like having these things with me.

If I get a headache, feel nauseous, or need something during the flight, I don’t want to be stuck without it.

This is not something I only bring when I travel either. I usually keep a version of this pouch in my purse at all times.

Airpods, AirFly, and Backup Headphones

For long flights, I always bring my AirPods because I usually watch movies or shows during the flight.

To connect my AirPods to the airplane entertainment system, I use an AirFly. You just plug it into the airplane screen and then pair it with your AirPods. It makes watching movies so much more comfortable because you don’t have to use the wired headphones they give you.

I also bring a little AirPods necklace so I don’t lose them. AirPods can easily fall out during a flight, especially if you fall asleep, so this helps keep them secure.

And because I like to overprepare, I also bring wired Apple headphones as a backup. My AirPods have never failed me on a flight, but just in case they do, I like having another option.

Passport and Important Items

Of course, my passport goes in the detachable pouch too.

This is one of those items I want with me at all times. I don’t like putting it in a random compartment where I have to search for it later, especially when going through the airport, boarding, or filling out any arrival forms.

I also keep a small mirror in here so I can do a quick touch-up before landing.

Disinfecting Wipes

When I get to my seat, I wipe everything down.

The tray table, armrests, seat area, screen, buttons, anything I can wipe down. I know some people may think this is a lot, but I always feel better after doing it.

I usually bring travel-size disinfecting wipes or single-use wipes, but I prefer the single-use wipes.

What I Keep in the Front Pocket

The front pocket of the backpack is where I keep some of my smaller items and liquids.

I used to carry more liquids in my carry-on, but now I try to put most of them in my checked luggage. For this flight, I kept it pretty minimal.

Saline Spray

This was my first time bringing saline spray on a flight, but airplane air can be so dry, so I wanted to try it.

Ray-Ban Meta Glasses

I packed my Ray-Ban Meta glasses in this pocket too. I like using them when I want to record things hands-free, especially while traveling.

Pen

I always like having a pen with me when I travel internationally. You never know when you’ll need to fill something out.

Plastic Bag

I keep a small plastic bag in my backpack just in case. It’s useful for trash, wet items, or anything I want to keep separate.

Bandolier’s Phone Wristlet

Sometimes I wear my phone crossbody with a strap, but if I don’t have the strap on me, I like using a phone wristlet. It makes it easier to hold onto my phone when I’m walking through the airport or filming.

Carabiner

I also keep a carabiner in my bag. This comes in handy if I need to attach something to the outside of my backpack (like trash) or if I run out of room inside.

My Camera Compartment

One of the bottom compartments of the backpack is what I use as my camera section.

Inside, I pack:

• My Sony camera & camera accessories

• External hard drive

I like having all of my camera gear together in one section so I know exactly where everything is.

I also use a small soft pouch from Daiso to cover my battery pack. It was originally meant to go over a bottle, but I thought it worked perfectly for protecting the battery pack and keeping it from scratching my camera.

Tech and Chargers

I also bring a retractable USB C charger that works for my iPhone and other devices as well as travel size power bank.

For long travel days, I like having multiple ways to charge my phone, camera, and other gear. I use my phone so much when traveling, especially for photos, video, maps, and airport information, so I don’t want to risk running out of battery.

I have also seen a lot of travel posts recently mentioning that battery pack information needs to be visible when flying, so I try to keep that in mind when packing mine.

Side Pockets

The side pockets are perfect for miscellaneous items.

On one side, I keep my selfie stick and on the other side, I put my bottled water.

What I Pack in the Main Compartment

The main compartment is where I keep the bulkier items.

Feminine Products

I always bring feminine products just in case. Even if I don’t think I’ll need them, I would rather have them with me.

One Extra Outfit

I always pack one extra day of clothes in my carry-on backpack.

For this trip, I packed:

• Underwear

• Pants

• A top

I usually keep this outfit simple and black so it’s easy to wear if needed.

This is mainly in case my checked luggage gets lost or delayed. It’s also helpful if a flight gets diverted or something unexpected happens and I end up needing an extra outfit.

It has never been a major issue for me, but again, this is one of those things that helps me feel more prepared.

Room for Onigiri (Rice Balls)

On the morning of my flight, I also like to leave a little extra room in my backpack for snacks.

For Japan flights, I usually like to make a couple of onigiri (rice balls). It’s easy, filling, and much better than relying only on airplane food.

Laptop Compartment

This backpack also has a padded laptop compartment on the side.

I try not to bring my laptop unless I really need it because it adds weight, but it is nice having the option.

Final Thoughts

I know I pack a lot, but I would rather be overprepared than stressed during a long flight. Flying makes me anxious, so having my essentials, comfort items, medication pouch, tech gear, and one backup outfit helps me feel a little more at ease.

And once I take my Dramamine, I can usually relax, sleep, and wake up in Japan.

We had the exact same concern.

But after spending almost two weeks in Japan and experiencing multiple rainy days in Tokyo, we realized something pretty quickly:

Rain in Tokyo is actually very easy to deal with.

In fact, Tokyo is one of the most rain-friendly cities we’ve ever visited.

So if you’re worried about rainy days in Tokyo, here’s what it’s actually like and why it’s not something you need to stress about.

What Rain in Tokyo Is Actually Like

One of the biggest surprises was how the rain behaves.

When people think of rain in Tokyo, they imagine:

• heavy downpours

• constant storms

• plans getting ruined

But in our experience, most Tokyo rainy days were:

• Light rain or drizzle

• On-and-off throughout the day

• Rarely strong enough to stop us

Even when it rained all day, it was usually light enough to walk around comfortably.

Why Tokyo Is Built for Rain

This was the biggest reason rain in Tokyo felt so manageable.

Tokyo is designed for people who walk everywhere, so the city is built to handle rainy weather.

Here’s what we noticed:

• Sidewalks have traction (not slippery)

• Roads are grippy, even on hills

• Walking in the rain feels safe and stable

Even in areas like Akasaka, which has hills, we never felt like we were going to slip.

This alone made a huge difference in how easy Tokyo rainy days felt.

Are There Puddles in Tokyo When It Rains?

This was one of our biggest concerns.

But surprisingly:

We barely saw puddles at all.

Tokyo’s drainage system is incredibly efficient:

• Water doesn’t collect on sidewalks

• You’re not constantly stepping around puddles

• Your shoes stay dry

Even wearing regular sneakers, we had no issues walking around all day.

Does Rain Affect Transportation in Tokyo?

Short answer: not really.

We used trains and taxis throughout our trip, even on rainy days.

Here’s what we noticed:

• Trains run on time

• Delays are rare (and usually only a minute or two)

• Everything stays extremely efficient

Rain in Tokyo does NOT disrupt your plans the way it might in other cities.

Do You Need an Umbrella in Tokyo?

Yes, but you don’t need to overthink it.

We brought a foldable umbrella… and barely used it.

Why?

• Hotels provide umbrellas

• Convenience stores sell them everywhere

• Shops stock up on rain gear instantly when it rains

You will never have trouble finding an umbrella in Tokyo.

How Tokyo Makes Rain Easy (Small Details That Matter)

I decided to finally try one of those Hilton Grand Vacations promotions after being offered them many times over the years. In the past, I always declined. The locations never made sense for me. Orlando was too close to home, and places like Hawaii required more planning than I was ready to commit to within a year.

This time was different because Las Vegas was offered. My boyfriend currently lives in Las Vegas, and since we are in a long-distance relationship, it felt like the perfect opportunity to use the promotion while visiting him at the same time.

The deal was simple. Three nights and four days at a Hilton Grand Vacations property in Las Vegas for about $225 total, with the requirement of attending a presentation.

At the time, it sounded like a great deal.

What the Hilton Promo Included

Here is what was offered in my specific promotion:

Booking Experience and Availability

I purchased the promotion in March and had one year to use it. I tried booking in the summer, but the options were not great. Most of the higher-end hotels were unavailable, and only lower-tier options were consistently open.

I decided to wait and try again in January, which is when I found availability at Hilton Elara. Elara had great reviews and a central Strip location, so I booked from January 27 to January 30.

One thing that frustrated me was that every single step had to happen over the phone. They would not communicate by email. No confirmation links, no digital paper trail. That felt strange to me, but I went along with it. Eventually, everything was set: Elara Hotel, three nights, presentation scheduled for 11:15 a.m. on day two.

Hilton Elara Hotel Review

The hotel itself was a great experience.

I checked in at 12:30 p.m., well before standard check-in time. The front desk associate Betty was warm and immediately offered me a room on the 32nd floor because I hold Hilton Gold status through my Hilton credit card. Gold members get a room upgrade when one is available, and on this day, one was.

Room 3206 was spacious and felt nothing like a standard hotel room. King bed with a comfortable mattress, a sofa, an accent chair, tall windows with a view of the MGM Grand and the airport in the distance. There was a wet bar with an extra sink, a coffee setup, a mini fridge, a microwave, silverware, cups, and even a small dishwasher. The bathroom had a Jacuzzi tub, which I took full advantage of.

The overall layout made the stay feel elevated.

Location: One of the Best Parts

The location of Hilton Elara is a huge advantage. The hotel connects directly to Miracle Mile Shops, the indoor mall at Planet Hollywood, which has a range of restaurants at every price point. We found a sit-down Mexican breakfast for $7 one morning. Seven dollars. For eggs, potatoes, and your choice of meat at an actual restaurant in Las Vegas. That kind of find makes a trip.

We were directly across from the Bellagio fountains, which I went back to watch multiple times. That never gets old.

Being able to walk everywhere made the trip much more convenient.

The Construction Noise and $75 Credit

One afternoon, there was very loud construction noise that made it hard to even hear the TV. I contacted the concierge through text, and they were very responsive. They apologized and offered a $75 credit to use at the bar or Starbucks.

While the service was great, the bar drinks were unfortunately not. The bartender was very nice, but the drinks themselves were not good, and we ended up going somewhere else.

In hindsight, Starbucks would have been a better use of the credit.

The Sales Presentation Experience

The presentation was scheduled for the second day of my stay at 11:15 am. It took place at another Hilton Grand Vacations location about 4.5 miles away, so we took an Uber to get there on time.

When we arrived, there was a waiting area with snacks, coffee, and drinks, which was a nice touch.

Our host was friendly and easy to talk to, which made a big difference. The group presentation itself only lasted about 20 minutes, much shorter than expected.

After that, we toured a timeshare unit, which was a large three-bedroom condo with a kitchen, living space, and balcony.

When it came time to discuss purchasing, I was honest. I told them I had lost my job about six months earlier and was not in a position to buy anything.

They did try to push slightly at first, but once they understood my situation, they backed off. A sales manager came over, had me sign a form about future eligibility, and that was it.

The entire experience lasted about one hour.

Important Update: Why I Did Not Receive the $199 Credit

After I returned home, I realized I had not received the $199 credit or the future stay certificate. I called Hilton Grand Vacations customer service to follow up.

Even without the $199 credit, I still felt that the stay was worth it. $225 for three nights at a spacious hotel in the middle of the Las Vegas Strip is still a solid deal.

The presentation was not stressful, the hotel was great, and the location made the trip easy and enjoyable.

However, if you are considering this type of promotion, I would strongly recommend confirming all eligibility requirements ahead of time, especially regarding employment status.

The transportation system is incredibly efficient, and most signs are translated into English. The culture is respectful and polite, which makes navigating the city feel very comfortable.

Some must-see spots include Shibuya, Shinjuku, and Ikebukuro.

2. London, England

London is one of my favorite cities in the world. I usually travel there with my sister Candy, but I’ve ventured out on my own before, including going to a concert solo. Even taking the trains back at night, I felt completely safe.

I love British history and the royal family, so visiting places like Westminster Abbey and Hampton Court Palace is always a highlight.

London offers endless things to do, excellent public transportation, and a very comfortable environment for solo travelers.

3. Geneva, Switzerland

Geneva completely surprised me. I had a 10-hour layover and decided to leave the airport to explore, and it turned out to be one of the easiest spontaneous solo outings I’ve had.

The airport has lockers near the train station, and it’s only about a 10-minute ride into the city. Everything felt clean, organized, and calm.

I spent the day walking along the lake, exploring Old Town, and enjoying cheese fondue at Restaurant Les Armures.

Lisbon is smaller than many European capitals, which makes it very walkable, even though the hills will definitely give you a workout.

I joined a free walking tour when I arrived, which I always recommend for solo travelers. It’s a great way to get familiar with the city and meet other travelers. I ended up exploring more of Lisbon with someone I met on the tour, which is one of the things I love about solo travel.

Lisbon’s architecture is stunning, with colorful buildings, patterned tile exteriors, wrought-iron balconies, and charming details throughout the city.

One of my favorite neighborhoods was Alfama. The narrow streets and scenic viewpoints overlooking the red rooftops and the river are absolutely beautiful.

5. Prague, Czech Republic (Czechia)

Prague feels like stepping into a fairytale.

It’s also where I met my friend Kathy from Darling Traveler. She was traveling solo at the time, and we instantly connected. Since then, we have been on many memorable trips together including Turkey, Bosnia, and Serbia.

The city is very walkable, and there’s so much to see, including Charles Bridge, John Lennon Wall, and the Astronomical Clock Show, which is the oldest working clock in the world since 1410.

6. Vancouver, Canada

Vancouver is a great mix of culture, food, and outdoor experiences.

Some highlights include the Capilano Suspension Bridge, the Vancouver Aquarium, and the Vancouver Police Museum, where I even got to dress up as a police officer and learn about how crimes are solved.

With scenic surroundings and a great food scene, Vancouver feels relaxed and very approachable for solo travelers.

7. Bratislava, Slovakia

I absolutely love exploring Eastern Europe, and one of my favorite destinations to visit is Bratislava.

During my time there, I learned so many fascinating and intriguing facts about this city and the country as a whole, thanks to the friendly and knowledgeable tour guides who were genuinely proud and passionate about their homeland. 

I highly recommend the Post Communist Tour of Bratislava with Authentic Slovakia . It was one of the most informative tours I’ve ever taken, and it gave me a deeper understanding of the region’s history.

Because the city is small and compact, it’s easy to explore without feeling overwhelmed.

8. Budapest, Hungary

Another interesting and safe Eastern European city to visit is Budapest. It’s an easy 2.5-hour train ride from Bratislava, so you can even hit up two countries in one day which many tourists do.

Walking across the Széchenyi Chain Bridge is a must, offering beautiful views of the Danube.

I also enjoyed visiting Memento Park, an open-air museum featuring statues from Hungary’s communist era. And of course, Budapest is known for its ruin bars like Szimpla Kert, which are creative spaces built inside abandoned buildings.

9. Ubud, Bali

Ubud is perfect if you’re looking to slow down and reset. I joined a yoga retreat, which made solo travel feel less isolating and allowed me to meet new people.

I was going through a particularly tough time mentally at that moment in my life, and it turned out to be the perfect sanctuary to begin my healing journey, all while being surrounded by the beautiful and rich local culture, along with the kind-hearted and welcoming people of Ubud.

Some highlights include hiking Mount Batur for sunrise and visiting the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary, where you can see monkeys up close in a natural setting.

Hiring a private car is also very affordable and makes it easy to explore places like waterfalls and rice terraces of Bali.

10. Reykjavik, Iceland

There’s no other country quite like Iceland. The incredible landscapes feel like another planet.

If you visit at the right time of year, you’ll also be fortunate enough to witness the breathtaking Northern Lights dancing in the night sky. Typically, I do not drive in other countries, but I felt entirely comfortable driving around Iceland since the roads are straightforward and easy to navigate.

Even if you decide not to rent a car, you can still explore plenty of attractions and activities around Iceland with convenient shuttle buses and organized tours.

Reykjavik, being a small town, makes it very easy to get around, as everything is conveniently within walking distance. From Reykjavik, you can enjoy an array of day tours including the Blue Lagoon and the Golden Circle tours which I highly recommend.

11. Corfu, Greece

Corfu is a perfect mix of island relaxation and history.

Old Town Corfu, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, offers a compact area where every attraction is within a 10-minute walk. Getting lost in the enchanting streets of Old Town, surrounded by historic buildings and lush greenery, was my most favorite thing to do during my visit to Corfu.

From Corfu, you can also explore the nearby islands of Paxos and Antipaxos. Paxos boasts charming landscapes, while Antipaxos features stunning beaches with soft sands and clear waters.

I felt very safe throughout my time on these beautiful islands, and the locals were all incredibly friendly and helpful. This welcoming atmosphere is always a nice feeling, particularly when you are traveling solo and exploring new places.

12. Vienna, Austria

If you love shopping and eating, Vienna is a lovely destination worth exploring. Kaerntnerstrasse stands out as one of Vienna’s most popular shopping streets and is widely packed with a variety of shops, charming cafes, and inviting restaurants.

The historical buildings themselves, within which these shops and restaurants are housed, are definitely a sight to behold, showcasing the city's rich architectural heritage.

Additionally, if you’re a fan of the classic film The Sound of Music, like I am, you simply must visit Salzburg, which is about a 3-hour drive from Vienna. I did the full-day Salzburg tour that picked us up directly in Vienna and took us on a scenic journey to Salzburg, making several interesting stops along the way.

13. Dubrovnik, Croatia

If you’re a fan of the show, Game of Thrones, then you absolutely must make a visit to Dubrovnik. A significant amount of the show was filmed in this stunning location, and as you stroll through the labyrinthine alleyways and admire the ancient buildings, you truly feel as though you’ve been transported into the medieval fantasy world of Game of Thrones.

To fully immerse yourself in the experience, I highly recommend taking one of the guided tours, as they provide you with a wealth of fascinating behind-the-scenes information.

Dubrovnik offers more than just its Game of Thrones fame. This picturesque town captivates visitors with stunning views from every angle along the Adriatic Sea. Its crystal-clear turquoise waters invite refreshing swims, with Banje Beach as a popular spot. For the adventurous, cliff jumping off the rocky coastline provides an exhilarating experience.

14. Bruges, Belgium

Bruges is an absolutely charming and enchanting town. Being a small town, it’s incredibly easy to explore and check out all the popular attractions. With its picturesque canals and beautifully preserved medieval architecture, this quaint destination provides a perfect backdrop for wandering and discovering hidden gems.

One of the best things about Belgium, in my opinion, are their famous Liege waffles, which are significantly better than your typical breakfast waffle. The dough of this Belgian waffle is much thicker, resulting in a treat that is crispy on the outside and warm, soft, and dreamy on the inside. It’s also a little sweeter because they use pearl sugar.

15. Amsterdam, Netherlands

Another compact and vibrant city that is just a short train ride away from the charming streets of Bruges is Amsterdam. This city is notoriously known for the Red Light District, but there is so much more to explore and appreciate in this beautiful city.

Bucharest is one of Eastern Europe’s most underrated capitals.

The Old Town is compact and walkable, with beautiful architecture, cozy cafés, and one of the most stunning bookstores in Europe, Cărturești Carusel.

The food and cocktail scene really stood out to me, with places like Alt Shift, Linea, and Grand Café Van Gogh offering great atmospheres.

And if you want to cross another country off your list, you can even take a guided day trip to Bulgaria like I did. It ended up being such a fascinating experience.

17. Cappadocia, Turkey

Cappadocia feels completely surreal. The landscape is filled with unique rock formations known as fairy chimneys, shaped by volcanic activity thousands of years ago.

Staying in a cave hotel like Taskonaklar and Mithra Cave is a one-of-a-kind experience, as many are built directly into the rock.

Most people visit for the hot air balloons at sunrise, but during my trip, they were canceled due to strong winds. Even so, the scenery and history made the experience unforgettable.

The region is rich in history, with places like the Göreme Open-Air Museum and underground cities offering a glimpse into the past. The warmth and hospitality of the people also made the experience even more memorable.

Food Items We Always Bring Back from Japan

Light Soy Sauce (Usukuchi)

Yes, you can buy soy sauce in the U.S., but this is completely different.

Usukuchi soy sauce is lighter in color but still has that salty depth. It gives a cleaner, more delicate flavor that we have never been able to replicate with regular soy sauce in the U.S.

Also, this is not the same as low sodium soy sauce. That is a completely different product. Usukuchi still has plenty of salt, it just has a more refined flavor.

For the longest time, this was one of those items we could only get in Japan, so we would always stock up and bring bottles home with us.

But recently, we discovered it’s now available on Amazon, which honestly surprised us. Just before our trip it definitely wasn’t being sold there. If you want to cook Japanese meals packed with rich umami flavors, usukuchi soy sauce will give you a noticeable boost in the kitchen.

Pickling Base (Asazuke or Dashi-Based)

This is one of the easiest ways to recreate Japanese flavors at home. All you do is chop veggies like cucumbers or cabbage, pour this over, and let it sit for about 30 minutes. It creates a clean, bright saltiness that enhances the natural sweetness of the vegetables. It’s tastes very different from Western-style pickling where it’s salty rather than sour.

We actually found the same brand available on Amazon, which is great if you want to try it without going to Japan. The version available on Amazon is the regular flavor, which is still really good. Even the regular version is an easy way to make quick Japanese-style pickles at home.

My personal favorite is the konbu flavor, which has a deeper umami taste from seaweed, and that is the one I have not been able to find in the U.S. near me.

Japanese White Chocolate

Japanese white chocolate is on another level.

Creamier, less sweet, and perfectly balanced. Unlike American white chocolate, the Japanese version focuses on high-quality dairy rather than sugar. Our go-to is DARS, which comes in a great resealable tray that’s already perfectly portioned.

You can sometimes find imported versions of Japanese white chocolate on Amazon or Weee!. Weee! is an online Asian grocery store we use regularly and is where we buy a lot of our fresh Asian produce and groceries.

For white chocolate and snacks, however, there is sometimes a minimum purchase required to qualify for free shipping because those items are coming directly from Japan, so just be aware of that before you check out.

Other Grocery Staples We Always Grab

We usually spend about $100 at the grocery store because the value is so good.

Some of our regulars include:

• White miso

• Rice crackers

• Mugicha (barley tea)

Japan does beauty products extremely well, especially for the price.

Eyelash Glue (Under $3)

We have been using this for years.

It holds all day, is not messy, and does not damage lashes, which is why we always stock up when we are in Japan.

For the longest time, this was one of those products we could only get while traveling, so we would buy several at once to bring home.

There is a site that sells this exact same glue online, but it is significantly more expensive than buying it in Japan, which is why we personally prefer to wait and purchase it in bulk during our trips.

If you really want to try it, you can get it from EveryMarket: It is currently around $15.59 plus tax and shipping, which is definitely higher than Japan pricing, but still an option if you do not want to wait. They also have a discount code you can use: EM10INS for 10% off.

Softymo Face Wash

This is one of the best budget skincare products we have found.

It is under $5 in Japan, foams really well, and removes makeup easily. It honestly performs better than a lot of products we have tried in the U.S. that cost three times as much.

Similar to the eyelash glue, this is another item we usually stock up on in Japan because it is so affordable there.

You can find it online, but it does cost quite a bit more compared to buying it in Japan.

If you want to try it without waiting for your next trip, we have seen it available through iHerb and Weee!, which are both sites we trust. A little goes a long way, so one bottle lasts longer than you would expect.

Unexpected Find: Hairline Powder

This was a completely random purchase and now we wish we found it sooner.

It blends naturally, looks great in photos, and is super compact. It is one of those small items that makes a bigger difference than you expect, especially in pictures.

For me personally, I like to use it along my hairline where my hair is really thin. When I put my hair up in a bun or ponytail, those areas can sometimes look almost bald in photos. This completely fixes that and makes everything look fuller and more even.

We have not been able to find this exact one in the U.S., but there is a similar version on Amazon that works the same way.

The packaging is not quite as cute, but it gets the job done and is a great option if you want to try it without waiting for a trip to Japan. This is something we did not know we needed until we tried it.

Why We Always Stop at MUJI

Even though MUJI exists in the U.S., it is just not the same.

In Japan, the stores are much bigger, the product selection is better, and with the strong exchange rate right now, prices are amazing.

Makeup Cases

We picked up two because we could not decide. They have built-in brush compartments, protective flaps, and really thoughtful organization that makes packing so much easier.

I also have a larger version of their makeup case that I have been using for over 10 years, and it is still in great shape. It has traveled everywhere with me, from Singapore to Hong Kong, and has held up incredibly well.

Travel Bottles and Containers

We have tried cheaper versions and they leak, are hard to squeeze, or break. MUJI’s versions do not leak, dispense easily, and last a long time.

Japan does seasonal items extremely well, especially during cherry blossom season.

We picked up a sakura-themed Starbucks tumbler with a bear-shaped splash stopper. Completely unnecessary, but impossible to pass up.

Harry Potter Sakura Tin

We randomly walked into a Harry Potter store and found a sakura-themed tin filled with individually wrapped cookies. Now we get snacks and a reusable keepsake container.

This is exactly why we always recommend leaving extra room in your suitcase when you come to Japan.

Is It Cheaper to Buy These in Japan?

Beauty products in Japan are often more affordable (depending on the brand), but what really stands out is the variety. Stores like Matsumoto Kiyoshi carry a huge selection of skincare, makeup, and everyday essentials, which is why we always make it a point to stop there.

We have noticed that some everyday items can still vary in price depending on where you shop. For example, we were about to buy a travel bottle at Matsumoto Kiyoshi, but ended up finding a similar one at MUJI for about half the price.

MUJI items are generally more affordable and much better stocked compared to what you will find in the U.S.

Food items tend to be higher quality for the price, especially pantry staples and snacks.

And with the strong exchange rate right now, everything is noticeably more affordable than in the US, so your money goes a lot further.

It is definitely worth comparing prices between stores because you can sometimes find the exact same type of item for less.

What You Can and Can’t Bring Back from Japan

• Packaged food is generally allowed

• Liquids should go in checked luggage

• Fresh items are not allowed

How We Pack Our Food Purchases

One thing we always plan for when going to Japan is leaving extra space in our suitcase. We have been using our Quince suitcases for several trips now and have really loved them. They are lightweight, durable, and have held up really well with everything we pack into them. We also love that they are expandable, which is especially helpful on the way back when we are bringing home more than we packed.

We usually keep at least half of our suitcase open so we have room for all the packaged foods we know we are going to bring back.

For liquids, we make sure to only buy bottles that are plastic and avoid anything in glass. It is just not worth the risk of something breaking in your luggage.

When it comes to packing, we wrap all of our liquid items in our clothes and use rubber bands to keep everything secure so the bottles do not shift around.

This has worked really well for us, and we have never had anything leak or break.

Driving from Las Vegas to Tampa in just three days sounds intense, and honestly, it is. But with the right planning, realistic expectations, and a second driver, it can absolutely be done.

I took on this cross-country road trip with my boyfriend, Tyrone, and my dog, Kuma, with one clear goal: get home efficiently without completely burning ourselves out.

This trip felt very different from my usual long drives. In the past, I’ve almost always tackled cross-country road trips solo, often stretching them to four or five days to manage the fatigue. This time, we were on a mission. We wanted to get from Las Vegas back to Tampa as efficiently as possible, and having Tyrone with me completely changed what felt doable.

Knowing we could switch drivers every few hours made the idea of three long days behind the wheel feel realistic instead of overwhelming. Along the way, I tracked every gas stop, food expense, and hotel stay to answer the question I get asked all the time: how much does a cross-country road trip actually cost?

This post breaks down our exact route, daily mileage, real gas prices, food spending for two people, hotel costs, and whether driving 10 to 12 hours a day is truly sustainable.

Our 3-Day Route at a Glance

This was the longest and toughest day. We left early and arrived after dark, which is something I personally try to avoid when possible. Energy was high at the start, but by the last couple of hours, driver switching was essential.

Day two is sneaky hard. Your body feels yesterday’s drive, but you still have another full day ahead. This hotel ended up being a highlight of the trip and made a huge difference in recovery.

Day 3: Jackson → Tampa

The shortest day mileage-wise, but still a long haul. By this point, switching drivers every two to four hours was key.

If you’re able to, prepare some food before you hit the road. Simple finger foods like sandwiches, fresh fruit, and cut vegetables are easy to eat and save time on long driving days. I usually make my favorite rice balls, which I bring on almost every road trip. They’re easy to eat while driving and surprisingly filling, making them perfect for long stretches on the highway.

One app I always recommend downloading before a long drive is iExit. It’s especially useful if you’re driving on the interstate. The app finds you automatically, shows upcoming exits, and lets you quickly search for restrooms, service stations, food, and more. It has come in handy countless times on my cross-country road trips.

Day 1: Las Vegas to Amarillo (12.5 Hours, 868 Miles)

We left Las Vegas early in the morning, knowing this would be the longest and most demanding day of the trip. The first stretch through Nevada and Arizona is always one of my favorites, with wide open landscapes, dramatic skies, and long, quiet stretches of road that make it easy to settle into the drive.

One of our early stops was in Holbrook, Arizona. At this same exit, we first stopped at a Maverik gas station, which was a great find. The restrooms were clean, the station was well-maintained, and there was a fast food burger spot inside, making it an easy and efficient stop.

Right after I filled my tank, we stopped by the nearby McDonald’s to get some lunch. Tyrone noticed a man sitting outside who clearly needed food. Without hesitation, he went back and made sure the man had a proper meal. It was a small moment, but one that stuck with me and reminded me how road trips often bring unexpected human moments along with the miles.

We arrived in Amarillo around 9 PM and didn’t get to bed until around 11 PM. The hotel room itself was comfortable and spacious, which was much appreciated after such a long day. However, the front desk experience was not great. The staff member we encountered was noticeably rude and unwelcoming, which stood out even more given how tired we were. Thankfully, the comfort of the room helped offset that first impression.

One major plus was the free breakfast the next morning. On a tight driving schedule, being able to eat quickly at the hotel saved both money and time.

Day 2: Amarillo to Jackson (12 Hours, 770 Miles)

Day two can be deceptively hard. Your body still feels the effects of the first long drive, but you are immediately asking it to do another full day behind the wheel. We started the morning with free hotel breakfast, which helped us get on the road early without needing to search for food.

One of the highlights of this day was stopping at Buc-ee’s, which is always a must for me on Texas road trips. This was Tyrone’s first Buc-ee’s experience, and it lived up to expectations. Spotless restrooms, endless snacks, fun travel items, and some of the cheapest gas prices we saw on the entire drive. Even if you do not buy much, it is one of those road trip stops that is simply worth experiencing.

As we continued east, gas prices stayed relatively low, and we made efficient stops using the iExit app, which is incredibly helpful for seeing food, gas, and rest options before committing to an exit. When you are driving this long, avoiding unnecessary detours makes a huge difference.

We arrived in Jackson, Mississippi in the early evening and were pleasantly surprised by the area near our hotel. It felt charming and walkable, with several restaurants and bars nearby. For dinner, we chose a Japanese restaurant called Zundo Ramen Bar, and it ended up being one of the highlights of the entire trip. The food was excellent, the ambiance was fun, and seeing a robot server in a local restaurant felt like a small, unexpected delight.

Our hotel in Jackson was excellent. The room was spacious, clean, and comfortable, and the staff was warm and welcoming. After two long days of driving, this kind of environment made a noticeable difference in how rested we felt.

Day 3: Jackson to Tampa (10.5 Hours, 700 Miles)

The final day was the shortest in terms of mileage, but still a long drive. By this point, switching drivers every two to four hours was essential. Even with a great night’s sleep, fatigue can sneak up on you quickly.

We started the morning with another free hotel breakfast, which once again helped keep costs down and allowed us to hit the road without delay. As we made our way through Mississippi and into Florida, the familiar sights of the I-10 corridor started to feel like home.

Of course, no road trip through this part of the country is complete without a stop at Whataburger. Since Tampa does not have any locations, I always try to take advantage whenever I see one on a road trip. It is quick, filling, and comforting, which is exactly what you want when you still have hours left to drive.

The final stretch into Tampa felt long but manageable, and pulling into the driveway after three intense days on the road was incredibly satisfying.

Why Breaking This Trip Into Three Long Days Worked

This pace worked because we planned realistic stops, stayed at comfortable hotels close to the highway, and shared the driving responsibilities. Free hotel breakfasts helped significantly with both cost and efficiency, and using tools like iExit made it easier to choose smart stops along the way.

Would I recommend this pace to everyone? No. But with two drivers, clear expectations, and a focus on efficiency rather than sightseeing, a three-day drive from Las Vegas to Tampa is absolutely doable.

One of the strongest features of the Holiday Inn Twin Falls is its location. After hours on the road, it was nice to arrive somewhere that had everything close by without needing to drive all over town.

Right around the hotel, you will find a large cluster of familiar restaurants and stores. Options include places like Five Guys, Chili’s, Outback Steakhouse, Hobby Lobby, and JCPenney. This makes it easy to grab dinner, pick up travel essentials, or simply unwind without much planning.

The hotel is also conveniently located near some of Twin Falls’ main attractions, including:

If you are visiting Twin Falls briefly or using it as a stopover, this location saves time and effort.

Check-In Experience and First Impressions

We arrived around 9:00 pm after a long day of driving. At the time of our stay, there was construction happening around the hotel, which made parking a little awkward. We had to park farther from the main entrance and walk over some uneven areas, which was not ideal when dragging a suitcase. A temporary paved walkway would have made this much easier.

Once inside, however, the experience improved immediately. The front desk staff member was friendly, welcoming, and efficient. Check-in was quick, and all hotel details were clearly explained, including the breakfast situation. First impressions inside the hotel were very positive and set the tone for the stay.

The Room: Large, Clean, and Comfortable for One Night

Walking into the room, the first thing that stood out was how spacious it felt. At over 400 square feet, there was plenty of room to move around, spread out luggage, and relax. After several days of road trip travel, this extra space was very appreciated.

The room featured:

• A king-size bed with nightstands, lamps, outlets, and USB ports on both sides

• A sleeper sofa and ottoman

• A desk and TV directly across from the bed

• A microwave and mini fridge located under the TV

• A Keurig coffee machine with regular coffee, decaf, and tea

• A full-length mirror with multiple outlets nearby

• A large closet with hangers, iron, and ironing board

Natural light was another highlight. The room felt bright and open, which is not always the case with hotel rooms. This made the space feel more inviting, especially in the morning.

While the room itself was excellent, the bed was not my favorite. It felt very soft and springy, which is a personal comfort issue. I prefer firmer mattresses that provide more support.

I was still able to sleep, and for one night it was manageable, but it was not the most comfortable hotel bed I have experienced. If mattress firmness is very important to you, this is something to keep in mind.

Bathroom Layout and Amenities

The bathroom was well designed and practical, especially for two people sharing a room. The sink area was separated from the toilet and shower, which made it easier for both of us to get ready at the same time.

The hotel uses Dove products for soap, lotion, and hand wash. While Dove is not my personal preference, everything was well stocked and clean. The shower head itself could be upgraded, but overall functionality was fine.

One thing to note is that this Holiday Inn does not offer free breakfast. This was a bit disappointing, especially since many travelers now expect complimentary breakfast at hotels.

The restaurant also offers dinner and has a bar, which is convenient if you want to relax without leaving the hotel.

Twin Falls is located in south-central Idaho, roughly halfway between Boise and Salt Lake City. The city was founded by I.B. Perrine and was named after the twin waterfalls on the Snake River (though one of the original twin falls is now mostly submerged by a dam). Twin Falls thrived due to an innovative irrigation project that transformed the desert into productive farmland, and agriculture remains important to the local economy today.

The Perrine Memorial Bridge: A BASE Jumper's Paradise

The Perrine Memorial Bridge was our first stop, and honestly, I thought we'd just look at it and leave. But as soon as we arrived, I noticed something unusual: people on the grass meticulously folding what turned out to be parachutes. That's when I realized we were about to witness something incredible.

Understanding BASE Jumping: The Ultimate Extreme Sport

BASE is an acronym that stands for:

• Buildings

• Antennas

• Spans, meaning bridges

• Earth, meaning cliffs

Unlike skydiving, where jumpers exit from aircraft at high altitudes with plenty of time to deploy parachutes, BASE jumpers leap from much lower heights, giving them only seconds to react.

The sport is incredibly risky. According to research, BASE jumping has a fatality rate estimated at about 1 death per 2,300 jumps, making it significantly more dangerous than skydiving, which has approximately 1 death per 500,000 jumps. The margin for error is razor-thin: jumpers typically have only 3 to 5 seconds from exit to deployment, and malfunctions can be catastrophic at such low altitudes.

Despite the risks, BASE jumping attracts thrill-seekers from around the globe who are drawn to the pure adrenaline rush and the technical skill required to execute a successful jump.

Why BASE Jumpers Love Twin Falls

As I explored the interpretive signs along the bridge, I learned something fascinating: Perrine Bridge is one of the only places in the United States where you can BASE jump year-round without a permit, 365 days a year. This makes it a mecca for BASE jumpers from around the world who come here daily to practice their sport.

The Perrine Memorial Bridge is an impressive structure in its own right. Completed in 1976, it stands 486 feet (148 meters) above the Snake River Canyon and spans 1,500 feet in length. At the time of its construction, it was the highest bridge in North America and remains one of the highest in the United States. The bridge replaced an older cantilever bridge and cost approximately $9.5 million to build.

I met a friendly local named John who shared even more amazing facts. His friend Jonathan Cox holds a Guinness World Record for completing 102 BASE jumps in just 24 hours from this very bridge! As long as the wind conditions are good, you'll see BASE jumpers here any day you visit.

Watching the BASE Jumpers in Action

What struck me most was watching the jumpers prepare. I saw a group of about seven people on the grass, meticulously folding and packing their parachutes for over an hour. The level of detail and precision was incredible. Everything had to be perfect, and for good reason given the sport's inherent dangers.

I decided to walk up onto the bridge walkway to get a jumper's perspective, and let me tell you, it gave me a whole new level of respect for these athletes. The bridge rattles from passing cars and trucks, it's windier up there, and you have to climb onto a ledge before jumping. They've even installed grip tape on the jumping spot because the surface is so slick. The whole area is covered in stickers from BASE jumpers, creating this cool community vibe.

One guy did multiple backflips on his way down. You could tell from the moment he walked up the stairs that he was full of confidence, just heading up there to have fun. Other jumpers were visibly nervous (as anyone would be!). One woman spent an hour and a half preparing her pack but ultimately decided not to jump due to wind conditions, though her boyfriend went for it without hesitation.

I watched five to six jumpers during my time there, and all of them landed safely in the grass or bushes near the water. It was absolutely thrilling to witness.

The History Behind Perrine Bridge

I learned so many fascinating facts about this bridge from the interpretive signs and from talking with locals. It's named after I.B. Perrine, an early settler who initiated numerous projects that essentially created the city of Twin Falls. Perrine was instrumental in developing the irrigation system that transformed the arid Snake River Canyon area into fertile agricultural land in the early 1900s.

And here's a fun piece of trivia: the legendary daredevil Evel Knievel attempted a famous mile-long canyon jump in this area back in 1974 at a location called the Snake River Canyon. While Knievel's steam-powered rocket didn't successfully cross the canyon, his attempt remains one of the most iconic moments in daredevil history.

Shoshone Falls: The Niagara of the West

After spending way more time at the bridge than planned, I headed to Shoshone Falls. I'll admit, I was hesitant at first. Some TripAdvisor reviews complained about the $5 entrance fee and said the falls weren't impressive. But John insisted I check it out, so I went.

A Grand Sight Worth Every Penny

I'm so glad I listened to John's advice. Shoshone Falls completely blew me away. They call it the "Niagara Falls of the West," and I had no idea it would be that big or that beautiful.

Shoshone Falls is truly spectacular. At 212 feet high and 900 feet wide, it's actually 45 feet taller than Niagara Falls! The falls are fed by the Snake River and are most impressive during spring runoff (typically April through July) when water flow is at its peak. I visited at the end of August when the flow was probably at its weakest but even then, the falls were still absolutely impressive and well worth the visit.

The drive into the park takes you along impressive rock formations that reminded me of the Going-to-the-Sun Road in Glacier National Park. Then you arrive at this lush, green oasis with rolling hills perfect for picnics.

The falls themselves are absolutely stunning. On a sunny day like when I visited, you'll see a gorgeous rainbow arcing over the cascading water. The rainbow stayed there the entire time I was watching.

Multiple Viewing Angles and Amenities

While there's one main viewing area that tends to get crowded, you can walk along trails to get completely different perspectives of the falls. I loved being able to see it from various angles.

The park is incredibly well-maintained with plenty of picnic tables, lush green grass, and a welcoming atmosphere. It's also extremely dog-friendly. In fact, that's something I noticed throughout Twin Falls: dogs everywhere, and everyone seemed totally comfortable with it. Even the BASE jumpers brought their dogs, who would just sleep on the grass waiting for their owners to finish jumping!

What Makes Twin Falls Special

Twin Falls transformed from a simple overnight stop into one of my favorite destinations. The town has a wonderful energy and the kind of authentic, unscripted experiences that make travel memorable. Twin Falls has so much character and so many unique attractions that I'm already planning to return.

Glacier National Park is one of the most stunning national parks in the United States, but it is also one of the most challenging to plan. Between advance reservations, unpredictable weather, limited services, and intense competition for parking, Glacier requires more preparation than many first-time visitors expect.

We visited Glacier in late August as part of a Western National Parks road trip and experienced everything from zero-visibility fog to unforgettable wildlife encounters. These are the 12 most important things to know before you go, based on what actually mattered during our trip.

1. You Need to Book Far Earlier Than You Think

Glacier is not a park you can plan last minute during peak season.

By early summer, we found that lodging inside the park was sold out and many tours were fully booked.

If you are visiting between June and September, plan to book accommodations, tours, and reservations four to six months in advance whenever possible.

2. Glacier No Longer Has a Reservation System

When we visited Glacier National Park in August 2025, vehicle reservations were required during peak hours. From 2021 through 2025, the park operated under a timed-entry vehicle registration system.

As of 2026, timed-entry reservations are no longer required. Instead, Glacier has implemented a ticketed shuttle system and three-hour limited parking at Logan Pass. Policies can change from year to year, so be sure to check the official park website before your trip.

3. Elevation Changes Affect Temperature Quickly

Glacier’s elevation shifts quickly, especially along Going-to-the-Sun Road. You can start the day in mild, comfortable weather at lower elevations and find yourself noticeably colder just 30 to 45 minutes later at Logan Pass.

During our visit in late August, it was comfortable at the base, but once we reached Logan Pass, the temperature dropped and the wind picked up. I made the mistake of wearing just a light jacket without a long sleeve layer underneath, and I was much colder than I expected. Even in peak summer, higher elevations can feel like a completely different season.

4. Parking Fills Shockingly Early

Glacier attracts very motivated visitors.

Popular areas like Logan Pass often fill before 7:00 am, even on weekdays. Arriving “early” by normal standards may still be too late.

If a specific hike or viewpoint matters to you, plan to arrive at dawn or be prepared to change plans.

5. Morning Weather Is Often the Worst Weather

Late August mornings frequently bring:

• Fog

• Low clouds

• Light rain

• Poor visibility at higher elevations

This does not mean the day is ruined. Conditions often improve dramatically by late morning or afternoon. If visibility is poor, move to lower elevations or another area of the park and revisit later.

6. Flexibility Is More Important Than a Perfect Itinerary

Glacier does not reward rigid plans.

Trails may be fogged in, parking may be unavailable, and weather may change suddenly. Some of our best moments came from changing plans, leaving areas early, or taking unplanned detours.

Build extra time into each day and accept that you will not see everything.

7. Cell Service Is Extremely Limited

Cell service inside Glacier is spotty to nonexistent, especially in areas like Many Glacier.

Before entering the park:

• Download offline Google Maps

• Save trail maps

• Screenshot tour confirmations and reservations

• Download your lodging details

Do not assume you will be able to look things up once you are inside the park.

8. Staying on the West Side Has Major Advantages

We stayed on the West side of the park, and it worked extremely well.

Benefits included:

• More lodging availability

• Better dining options

• A well-stocked grocery store

• Easier access to Apgar Village and Lake McDonald

• Lower gas prices

The East side offers closer access to some areas, but services are limited and accommodations book far in advance.

9. Food Inside the Park Is Limited and Expensive

Dining options inside Glacier are sparse, and prices are high for what you get.

Packing food saved us time and money and allowed us to stay flexible. Simple lunches, snacks, and breakfasts made long days much easier.

If you cannot pack meals, there are a few in-park options, but plan for limited menus and extra wait time.

10. Wildlife Encounters Are Common, Even on Easy Trails

Glacier delivered the most wildlife sightings of our entire road trip.

We saw:

• A grizzly bear from a distance

• A black bear swimming

• Moose extremely close to the trail

• Bighorn sheep and mountain goats along the road

Late August is an active time for wildlife. Carrying bear spray or another deterrent is strongly recommended if you plan to hike.

11. Driving Times Look Long but Feel Shorter

Distances inside Glacier can appear intimidating on maps, with drive times of one to two hours.

In reality, those drives are part of the experience. Going-to-the-Sun Road is one of the most scenic drives in the country, and the views make the time pass quickly.

12. Glacier Rewards Preparation but Even More So, Patience

Glacier National Park requires more effort than many parks, but the payoff is enormous.

Weather challenges, missed turns, and unexpected wildlife encounters often become the most memorable moments. Going in prepared but patient makes all the difference.

Glacier National Park is not an easy destination, but it is one of the most rewarding. Advance planning, early mornings, downloaded maps, and flexible expectations will help you enjoy it rather than fight it.

I've split my two-week trip into two parts: a 6-day city adventure in Tokyo followed by time at my parents' house in Narita. For the Tokyo portion, my goal was to fit everything into a carry-on to avoid hauling heavy bags through train stations.

Here’s the process I usually follow.

1. Start With the Itinerary

The first thing I do is look at our trip itinerary.

Knowing where we plan to go helps me visualize what kind of outfits I might want for each day. For example, exploring Tokyo neighborhoods might call for comfortable walking outfits, while a dinner out might be a chance to wear something a little more stylish.

2. Check the Weather

Next, I check the forecast.

Tokyo weather in March is usually cool and sometimes rainy, so layering pieces are essential. Lightweight sweaters, cardigans, and a jacket make it easy to adjust throughout the day.

3. Choose Mix-and-Match Pieces

I try to pick clothing items that work with multiple outfits.

This might include:

• Neutral tops

• Comfortable jeans or trousers

• Layering sweaters

• A versatile jacket

Choosing pieces that can mix and match helps reduce the number of items I need to pack.

I packed a mix of pieces including:

Outerwear can completely change the look of an outfit, especially in photos. Because of that, I like to bring at least one or two jacket options. For this trip I chose a trench coat since it works well for spring weather and light rain.

Shoes

Comfortable shoes are essential for travel in Japan. Tokyo involves a lot of walking and public transportation, so supportive shoes are important.

Tokyo Weather in March and April

Tokyo’s spring weather can vary quite a bit throughout March and April. Temperatures are usually in the mid-40s to mid-60s °F, which means mornings and evenings can feel cool while afternoons are often comfortable. Because of this, lightweight layers like sweaters, cardigans, and a light jacket tend to work best.

Packing for Tokyo in spring is really about building a transitional wardrobe. Layering pieces makes it easy to adjust throughout the day as temperatures change. Since you’ll likely be walking a lot while exploring Tokyo and using the train system, comfortable shoes are essential.

There’s also a chance of light rain during this time of year, so bringing a compact umbrella or a light waterproof jacket can be helpful.

What I’ve Learned From Visiting Japan Often

Because I visit Japan regularly to see family, I’ve learned that traveling there is usually easier than people expect. Many everyday items are easy to buy locally, and convenience stores and drugstores are incredibly well stocked.

Over time I’ve found that packing lighter and focusing on versatile layers works best for Tokyo in spring. You’ll likely be walking a lot, taking public transit, and stopping into small shops or cafes throughout the day, so comfortable (and obviously stylish😉) outfits and a day bag tend to be the most practical choices.

My Tokyo Spring Packing List

Layering is your best friend this time of year. You want pieces that look chic but can be easily shed and tucked into a daypack.

• Light Jacket or Trench Coat: A classic trench coat or a light jacket is perfect for the city aesthetic and provides wind protection.

• Comfortable Jeans or Trousers: For jeans, I make sure to pack a pair that have some stretch in them, and for trousers I prefer the waist to have a bit of elastic so they sit comfortably all day.

• Lightweight Sweater or Cardigan: Versatile mid-layers. A mix of thin sweaters and slightly heavier cardigans allows you to adjust throughout the day.

• Long Sleeve Tops: Bringing 1–2 lightweight Heattech (thermal) tops is a "pro move”. They take up zero space but make a huge difference if a cold snap hits. My favorite Heattech tops are from Uniqlo. I pack both long and short sleeve options.

• Midi Skirt or Casual Dress: The weather is finally warm enough to start wearing your cutest skirts and dresses again.

Comfortable Shoes for Tokyo (You’ll Walk a Lot)

In Japan, your shoes are part of the "logistics." You will be taking them off frequently at temples, traditional restaurants, and even some fitting rooms.

• Slip-on Walking Shoes: Prioritize comfort and ease. Loafers, Mary Janes, or sneakers with elastic laces are ideal.

• Pristine Socks: Since you'll be in your socks often, pack pairs that are clean and hole-free.

Tokyo Outfit Examples for Spring

Small Things That Are Surprisingly Useful in Japan

• Coin Purse: Japan is still very cash-heavy (especially at shrines and small shops), and you will accumulate a lot of 100-yen and 500-yen coins.

• Small Hand Towel: Many public restrooms do not have paper towels or hand dryers. Carrying a small towel is a local norm. Think of it as the size of a standard American washcloth. If you forget to pack one, you can find them everywhere from convenience stores to high-end boutiques. They come in endless colors and adorable designs. I have a cute one with the adorable Miffy character that I throw in my purse.

• Portable Power Bank: Between Google Maps and taking photos of the Sakura, your battery will drain faster than usual.

• Collapsible Umbrella: While you can buy clear ones at any konbini (convenience store), a high-quality compact one is better for wind.

• Foldable Shopping Bag (Eco-bag): In Japan, plastic bags at convenience stores (konbini) and supermarkets now cost extra. A lightweight, pouch-sized foldable bag is a lifesaver for carrying unexpected snacks, Gashapon hauls, or souvenirs.

  Pro Tip: If you forget one, you can buy incredibly stylish and durable ones at Loft, Hands, or Don Quijote that make for great functional souvenirs themselves.

• Small Trash Bag: Public trash cans can be hard to find in Japan, so many locals carry their trash until they get home. A small trash bag in your day bag can be surprisingly useful.

• Allergy Medication: Spring in Japan is known for cedar pollen, and visitors sometimes experience allergies unexpectedly.

Things I’ve Learned Not to Overpack for Japan

• Too many toiletries: Drugstores like Matsumoto Kiyoshi and convenience stores carry most travel essentials if you run out.

• Lots of Cash from Home: Japan is more card-friendly than it used to be, and ATMs at convenience stores like 7-Eleven make it easy to withdraw yen if you need it.

• Travel Adapters: If you’re coming from the U.S., most electronics work in Japan without an adapter because both countries use the same plug type. I use my flat and curling iron just fine without an adapter.

• Extra Shoes: Tokyo involves a lot of walking, but one reliable pair of comfortable walking shoes is usually enough. A second pair is optional, but you likely won’t need more than that.

If you're planning a trip to Glacier National Park, you've probably seen photos of those iconic red vintage buses cruising along the Going-to-the-Sun Road. But at $86 per person, you might be wondering: is the Red Bus Tour actually worth it? After experiencing the Crown of the Continent Tour firsthand in late August, I'm here to share my honest thoughts.

What is the Red Bus Tour?

The historic Red Jammer buses have been a Glacier National Park staple since the 1930s. These 17-passenger open-top vintage buses navigate the park's narrow, winding roads while drivers share interesting facts about the landscape, wildlife, and history. If you'd rather enjoy the views instead of white-knuckling the wheel on those cliff-edge roads, this tour offers a relaxed alternative.

The route starts on the eastern side of the park near St. Mary, climbs up to Logan Pass, and then continues down the west side before looping back.

Pro tip: Book early! I wanted to catch a tour departing from the west gate entrance near our lodging, but those tours were completely sold out when I looked in early June.

Getting Started: A Minor Mix-Up

We arrived at 9:45am (15 minutes early as instructed) and immediately hit a small snag. There was some confusion with bus numbers, and our 75-year-old guide Al didn't call out to us even though we were clearly waiting. After checking back in with the desk, we finally got on bus 84 (not 89 as we were initially told). Al seemed a bit annoyed that we were "late," even though we'd been there since 9:45. It was a rocky start, but things improved significantly from there.

One thing to note: pack layers! The forecast said 60s, but temperatures dropped to around 50 degrees at higher elevations. I definitely underdressed for the occasion.

The Stops Along the Way

Wild Goose Island

Our first stop was Wild Goose Island, one of the most photographed spots in Glacier National Park. Unfortunately, rain cut this stop short, so everyone quickly snapped photos and hurried back to the bus. Al shared a couple of myths about the island, adding some local flavor to the experience.

Along the drive, we learned that Lake McDonald is the park's largest lake at nearly twice the depth of St. Mary Lake, which sits at about 250 feet at its deepest point.

Reynolds Creek Fire Area

We drove past the haunting remains of the Reynolds Creek Fire, which started on July 21, 2015 when lightning struck above the lake. The fire burned nearly 5,000 acres, making it the park's largest fire at the time, consuming roughly 2 percent of Glacier.

Logan Pass

Our 45-minute stop at Logan Pass was the first restroom break and a highlight of the tour. At 6,646 feet (2,025 meters), Logan Pass is the highest elevation reachable by car in the park. Despite the crowds, it's worth exploring the area and soaking in the alpine scenery.

Lake McDonald Lodge Lunch Break

We stopped at Lake McDonald Lodge for lunch, where you can choose between Russell’s Fireside Dining Room for a sit-down meal or Jammer Joe’s Grill & Pizzeria for something quicker.

We went with Jammer Joe’s purely for convenience since it was the fastest option with the limited lunch window. While it did the job timing-wise, the food was pretty underwhelming. We tried the chicken parmesan sandwich and weren’t fans, and the coffee was not great either.

Sacred Dancing Cascade

After lunch, we stopped at Sacred Dancing Cascade, a beautiful waterfall where water moves gracefully over rocky ledges, hence the "dancing" in its name. The vibrant blue water was absolutely stunning and made for great photos.

Additional Stops and Wildlife

We stopped at several pullouts to admire valleys, waterfalls, and mountain views. We got lucky and spotted two bighorn sheep crossing the road, which was incredibly exciting. Because we had the top open at that point, we could easily stand up and photograph them without fighting for parking or crowding the roadside.

With the top open, we stopped to take photos of the Triple Arches. These arches were designed to bridge mountain gaps without massive retaining walls, allowing the road to blend naturally into the landscape. It is an impressive example of early park engineering.

We stopped at Jackson Glacier Overlook for about 15 minutes, which gave us time to walk down the stairs and explore the historic horse tunnel. Often referred to as the “horse tunnel,” this underpass was built in the 1930s for horse parties traveling between chalets. It sits between the upper and lower parking areas along Going-to-the-Sun Road. We walked through the tunnel ourselves, and it was a fun way to experience a small piece of Glacier’s early travel history.

Along the way, Al pointed out Going-to-the-Sun Mountain and shared fascinating tidbits, like how the park originally had 85 to 100 glaciers when it opened, but now only about 25 remain.

The Open-Top Experience: A Game Changer

Here's where the tour really won me over. Initially, Al kept the top closed due to rain, which was understandable but disappointing since the open-top experience is a huge part of what makes these buses special. When I noticed other buses had their tops off on the return journey, I asked if we could do the same.

Al seemed surprised, saying I was the only one who wanted it open, but he agreed. I'm so glad I spoke up! Having that 360-degree view while cruising the Going-to-the-Sun Road completely transformed the experience. Sure, it was a bit chilly, but being able to pop your head up and take in the sweeping mountain vistas made it absolutely worth it. When Al heard from other guides that rain was approaching again, we put the top back on just in time.

So, Is It Worth It?

After some initial doubts, I have to say yes, the Red Bus Tour is worth it, especially if you can experience it with the top open. Being able to relax, learn, and take photos without the stress of driving those intense mountain roads made for a memorable day. The tour lasted from 10:15am to around 4:15pm, giving us plenty of time to see both sides of the park.

If you're considering booking, here's my advice: reserve as early as possible (preferably months in advance), dress in layers regardless of the forecast, and don't be afraid to speak up if you want the top open. The Crown of the Continent Tour offers a unique perspective on Glacier National Park that's hard to replicate on your own, making it a worthwhile splurge for your visit.

Would I do it again? Absolutely. Just maybe with a warmer jacket next time!

If you’re planning a trip to Glacier National Park and discovering that lodging inside the park is already booked, staying just outside the entrance can be a great option. During our late-August trip, we stayed at Sky Eco Cabins in West Glacier, and it ended up being one of our favorite parts of the experience.

We stayed for two nights, and from the moment we walked in, I was genuinely impressed. I love cabins in general, but this one stood out because it combined cozy cabin vibes with modern design and thoughtful details.

Location: Convenient and Surprisingly Quiet

Sky Eco Cabins are located in West Glacier, about a 13-minute drive to Apgar Village and Lake McDonald. That made early mornings into the park very manageable.

Although the cabins are near the highway, road noise was minimal. Cars passed by occasionally, but it was never disruptive and faded into the background quickly.

Another big plus was the proximity to restaurants, bars, and a grocery store. We stocked up on food and cooked most of our meals at the cabin, which saved money and time.

Cabin Overview: Bear Den

Our cabin was called Bear Den, one of four cabins lined up on the property. You can park right in front of the cabin, which makes unloading luggage incredibly easy.

Check-in is contactless using a door code that is sent a couple of days before arrival. Not having to deal with keys was very convenient.

Interior Design: Cozy, Modern Cabin Style

The cabin is small but very thoughtfully designed. The color palette uses soft grays and neutrals, and everything from the furniture to the lighting feels intentional.

I did not expect to use the kitchenette much, but we ended up using it every day for both breakfast and dinner.

Even though it is compact, the kitchenette is well equipped and very functional. It includes:

The bathroom was one of my favorite parts of the cabin. The design felt modern with black accents and cabin-themed decor that still felt elevated.

Glacier National Park is stunning, but it can be challenging to visit. Between a confusing reservation system, unpredictable weather, and tours that book months in advance, our two-day road trip in late August didn’t go as planned. By early June for our late August trip, all hotels inside the park and all Red Bus tours starting from the west side were sold out. Don't wait.

Day 1: Red Bus Tour & Going-to-the-Sun Road

Our first full day in Glacier centered around Going-to-the-Sun Road, one of the most scenic drives in the country. We booked the historic Red Bus Tour months in advance, knowing it would let us experience the road without worrying about driving, parking, or navigating narrow mountain curves.

The morning started cloudy and damp, which is common in Glacier, but conditions improved as the day went on. Once the weather cleared, riding with the top of the bus rolled back completely transformed the experience. Standing up, taking photos, and watching bighorn sheep cross directly in front of us ended up being one of the highlights of our entire road trip.

Morning: Apgar Village (6:00 AM)

We started the day at Apgar Village to see Lake McDonald before our tour. The gift shop opens at 6:00 AM and has surprisingly great merchandise, along with a small café serving coffee and pastries. It was cloudy with light rain, so the lake was not the vibrant blue you often see in photos, but it was still peaceful and beautiful in its own way.

Drive to Rising Sun Motor Inn

The roughly 1.5-hour drive from Apgar Village to Rising Sun Motor Inn, where our tour picked up, went smoothly. The weather stayed overcast with occasional light rain, but visibility was good. Along the way, we passed through two tunnels, drove past the Weeping Wall where water cascades directly onto the road, and took in constant mountain views that made the drive fly by.

Red Bus Tour: Crown of the Continent

The Red Bus Tours use vintage 1930s buses with roll-back tops and are truly iconic. Our tour included several memorable stops, including:

The Top-Off Drama: I was the only person on the bus who wanted the top rolled back. One woman was very vocal about the possibility of rain, but I spoke up anyway. Once the top came off, the entire experience changed. We had open-air, 360-degree views and were able to photograph bighorn sheep crossing right in front of us. Our guide, Al, was so excited that he stopped at viewpoints he had never stopped at before. When other drivers radioed in a rain warning, we rolled the top back on.

Verdict: Absolutely worth every penny. You see hidden viewpoints, learn park history, and avoid the stress of driving those narrow roads yourself.

Evening

On the drive back, we stopped again at Sacred Dancing Cascade to walk closer to the waterfall. After a full day, we headed back to our cabin and cooked dinner, grateful for a quiet evening after such an unforgettable day.

Day 2: Many Glacier Adventure

Our second day was spent in the Many Glacier area, which quickly became our favorite part of the park. The morning started with thick fog and almost zero visibility, forcing us to abandon our original hiking plan. Instead of waiting it out, we drove to lower elevations, and by the time we reached Many Glacier, conditions had improved significantly.

We spent the day around Swiftcurrent Lake, rented a rowboat, took a boat tour, and ended up on an unexpected walk that became the highlight of the trip.

Hidden Lake Overlook Attempt - FAILED (6:00-8:00 AM)

We woke up at 4:00 AM with plans to hike Hidden Lake Overlook, a 2.7-mile trail starting at Logan Pass. As we drove up Going-to-the-Sun Road, the fog became thicker and thicker until visibility dropped to nearly zero. I was driving about 10 mph, seeing nothing but white clouds. Earlier that morning, a National Park shuttle bus had even hit the rock wall because visibility was so poor.

By 7:30 AM, the parking lot at Logan Pass was already full, and we still could not see anything through the fog. After sitting in the car debating what to do, along with another couple doing the same, we decided to abandon the hike and head to Many Glacier instead.

Lesson learned: Glacier weather is wildly unpredictable. Always have a backup plan.

Grizzly Bear Sighting! (Around 9:00 AM)

On the drive to Many Glacier, we spotted a grizzly bear on a hillside. First grizzly I'd ever seen! A couple behind us shared their binoculars so we could see how huge it was.

Many Glacier Hotel Area (10:00 AM–5:00 PM)

Many Glacier Hotel is a historic lodge sitting right in front of Swiftcurrent Lake, and visiting it alone is an experience. The building has a Swiss-inspired feel, and the employees wear charming Swiss-themed uniforms. When we arrived around 10:00 AM, there was plenty of parking, though it can get busier later in the day during peak season.

We had time before our boat tour, so we decided to rent a rowboat on Swiftcurrent Lake. Learning how to row for the first time was surprisingly challenging and incredibly fun. It took a few minutes to get the hang of it, but once I did, I did not want to stop, at least not until my arms gave out.

Glacier Park Boat Tour

We originally had a 2:00 PM reservation but joined the wait list for the 1:00 PM tour and were able to get on. The tour includes a ride across Swiftcurrent Lake, a steep 0.2-mile hill climb, and then a second boat ride across Josephine Lake. You also have the option to hike and catch a later return boat.

Black Bear Alert:
Right after we got off the boat at Josephine Lake, a black bear was swimming in the water. It climbed out and ran into the trees near the trail. Every hiker we passed kept asking, “Did you see the bear?” Word travels fast in Glacier.

Getting Lost Was the Best Part (2:00–5:00 PM)

We were among the few people who stayed to hike toward Grinnell Lake, a 2.8-mile trail. Somewhere along the way, we completely missed the turn and walked far past it. When we asked other hikers for directions, they told us the lake was “way on the other side.”

A little bummed and unsure what to do next, we started heading back. That’s when a group stopped us and said, “Wait, there’s a moose right there.” A mama moose was incredibly close to the trail. We waited until she moved away, taking photos the entire time.

As if that was not enough, we started chatting with a couple from the group while walking back and discovered they were also from Tampa. What are the odds of meeting people from your hometown in the middle of Montana?

We ended up walking the full perimeter of Swiftcurrent Lake and Josephine Lake back to the hotel. The walk was mostly flat, incredibly scenic, and full of memorable moments. Getting lost turned out to be the best part of our Glacier trip.

Evening

On the way back, we made a quick stop at Apgar Village so Tyrone could swim in Lake McDonald before heading back for the night.Wildlife Spotted

Over 2 days, we saw:

• Grizzly bear (hillside close to Many Glacier Hotel)

• Black bear (swimming in Josephine Lake)

• Moose (close to trail)

• 2 bighorn sheep (crossed in front of Red Bus)

Pro tip: Stay alert while driving. Most wildlife sightings happened between locations.

What I'd Do Differently

1. Have multiple weather backup plans

2. Book west-side tours months in advance to avoid the 1.5-hour drive

3. Allow 3-4 days instead of 2 for more flexibility

Is 2 Days Enough?

Two days gave us a solid introduction: Going-to-the-Sun Road, Red Bus Tour, boat tour, and incredible wildlife. But we'd love 3-4 days to hike Hidden Lake in good weather, actually find Grinnell Lake, and explore more trails without rushing.

Final Thoughts

Glacier tested us with fog and getting lost. But those challenges created our best moments: grizzly and black bear sightings, a close moose encounter, meeting Tampa locals in Montana, and riding a vintage bus with the top off as bighorn sheep crossed in front of us.

My advice: Book early, pack for all weather, start at sunrise, and embrace whatever Glacier throws at you. The best moments come from plans that don't work out.

While I usually prefer a king bed, the two-queen room often comes in at a better price, and this one worked well for us. The room was spacious and functional, with plenty of surfaces and storage to spread out after long days of exploring.

The beds were what I’d call mid-range comfortable. Not luxurious, but not uncomfortable either. Each bed had four pillows, which I always appreciate. Across from the beds was a small dining table with sturdy wooden chairs, continuing the lodge-style theme you’ll see throughout the hotel.

• Two luggage racks (huge win, since most hotels only give you one)

• Mini fridge with a small freezer

• Microwave

The sink area was separate from the toilet and shower, which made mornings easier when getting ready at the same time.

The bathroom itself was simple but worked well. Water temperature and pressure were good, and everything functioned as expected. The shower head squeaked a bit, but nothing major. Toiletries included soap, shampoo, conditioner, lotion, and even makeup wipes, which was a nice touch.

The hotel leans fully into a cozy cabin vibe, with lots of wood finishes and adorable bear and moose decor throughout the room and common areas. One of my favorite details was the little bear accents on the lamps and artwork. Even the outside of the building has climbing bear decorations near the windows, which immediately made the place feel welcoming and fun.

Indoor Pool & Jacuzzi: Perfect for relaxing after a long day of hiking.

Laundry Room: Available on both the first and second floors. It's $3 for both washer and dryer (they provide quarters if you need them). A bit pricier than other hotels I've stayed at, but convenient if you need it.

No Gym: When I asked about a gym, the staff told me "the park is the gym." Fair point, I guess! Though on a rainy day like our checkout day, it would've been nice to have that option.

Overall Thoughts

Kelly Inn West Yellowstone isn’t a luxury hotel, but it doesn’t try to be. What it offers instead is comfort, character, and an unbeatable location. For a Yellowstone trip, that combination goes a long way.

The staff was friendly and helpful, the room had everything we needed, and the cozy lodge vibe made it feel like part of the overall national park experience. Considering how hit-or-miss (and pricey) accommodations near major parks can be, this was a stay I’d happily recommend and would book again.
