Stanhope, Savage Bay & the East End of the Island

Although I will not get to see all of PEI in my short three day stay - I have gotten to see an enormous amount of it.

After a great night on the beach, we got up the next morning and met hubby at the Red Island Rally site - and then we all hopped into his sisters car and went for a scenic drive...to East Point - the place where the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans meet

After touring the light house and learning the regions history we headed back down island towards Charlottetown...

At Basin Head Beach where jumping into a canal that pulls you out to sea is a fantastic time for the kids...it is also the home of the singing sands...the sand here has the highest concentration of silica of anywhere...when you walk on the sand - it squeaks!

After a wonderful day of sight seeing we went to New Glasow for a Lobster Supper - what an absolute feast!

I am sad to leave this incredibly picturesque little island that only measures 150 miles long (250 KM's) and 14 miles at it's widest and 4 at it's narrowest - if I remember all of the facts our tour guide from the East End Light House gave us....

The people, the landscapes, the history and the food - it is all absolutely amazing.

My sister in law agreed to take me on a walking tour of Old Charlottetown and who better to do the job than a gal who works for the provincial government?

It took us about an hour to walk around the down town area and there was still so much we could have visited - the whole area is filled with the most fascinating history and buildings.

If you get the chance to come here to Prince Edward Island - do it - it is an experience you will NEVER forget!

The Ride to Remember for Heart & Stroke

Susan, the organizer of the Heart & Stroke's Ride to Remember was one busy lady.

Being an event organizer means being flexible.
She had lots of blockers and out riders ready, the RCMP and the Charlottetown City Police were all on board and at the ready and then the staging area became too small.

Plan B - move as many as possible up to the church parking lot just up the hill. Now that's the kind of challenge every event coordinator loves to have! Too many bikes in one parking lot!

It was wonderful to see the number of people who lined the streets cheering everyone on, honking horns and waving - it appears that Charlottetown has embraced the riders, the fund raising and awareness raising this event created along with the Red Island Run.

Susan was originally hoping for 100 to 150 bikes but the cause had approximately 275 bikes come out! I am unaware of the final total of the fund raising efforts but I am sure that with the number of bikes exceeding expectations, the funds raised did too.

It was a wonderful ride and the police were incredible as were all of the blockers and riders - everyone did their part! BDB

The Delta Prince Edward - A hotel that works hard

The Delta Prince Edward is the host hotel for the first ever Red Island Rally.

It has also been my home away from home for the last 2 days
The Sales manager Betty Ann is very eager for her hotel to become Rider Friendly and engaged me in discussions as to what can be done to become more Rider Friendly than they already are.

The hotel boasts a pool - however I have been so busy here that I have not had the opportunity to check it out, their restaurant is amazing - the food is impeccable as is the service. This is FINE dining and the prices reflect that.

There is an on site pub but as I said, I have been rather occupied and so I have not taken in that aspect of the hotel.

Under ground Parking

The under ground parkade is secured with cameras and a security person who patrols it.
The room I was in was large and had two Queen beds and was thoughtfully appointed. Electrical outlets and hard wired Internet is readily available.

The view from the room is amazing - the harbour and the water make it an island treasure for sure.

If you decide to try out the Delta Prince Edward I am sure you will enjoy your stay and the staff - however they are not yet a member of the Rider Friendly Business Association so your BDB card will not net you any benefits here. However, if you find yourself staying here - please tell them that Belt Drive Betty sent you as perhaps they will join our association and provide you with the reward!

The Red Island Rally - an inaugural event

Many communities have turned to motorcycle events to spark some tourism opportunities and advantages - in this faltering economy, motorcyclists are amongst the few who are doing much travelling. Charlottetown is no different. For the past number of years they have looked at ways to attract more people to the island in what they term a slow point - the last week of August when many have headed home because of school starting.

A number of antique and vintage bikes were on display in the events centre as were Bob Mckay's bikes...Bob original hails from this fair island.

The Choice Hotels were present giving out rider discount cards and other goodies.

Some Organic skin care products were on hand - the sun block was of particular interest - 30 spf and all organic - supposedly reduces the suns harmful handy work...

Quite the crowd gathered to watch the stunt riders - "The Hub City Stunters" and remember folks - this is FRIDAY afternoon!

As is evidenced by these pictures - they are talented young men.

This rally is small, down to earth and filled with small technical glitches that other events would NEVER face. Charlottetown is small - 39,000 people with a National shipping port that just happened to have 2 gravel ships (that's right, they have to haul gravel to this pretty little island) that docked early. Then mother nature decided that after a month and a half with no rain - she needed to shed some tears causing the red 'gravel' parking lot to be a bit soupy and sloppy.

One small thing after another cropped up and in spite of it all they have pulled it together and have the makings of a really good show in the years ahead. They have a good sponsorship base and the riding community sure is behind them!

A peaceful and serene backdrop for the whole event to take place...

I had a blast and met great people and got fabulous photos and just had an all around great day - I can't wait to see what tomorrow will bring.

Destination Charlottetown & The Red Island Rally

On August 26th I left New Brunswick and headed towards Charlottetown for the Red Island Rally.

My husband's mother is from PEI and his sister still lives here. He tried to prepare me for the island and what I would see but there are no words to describe this place that could possibly do it justice.

At Port Elgin I took exit in the round about (Traffic Circle) towards PEI and was amazed - the pavement is red...

I have not taken any pictures as of yet as it was raining really hard - but the visuals I have in my head I will do my best to share with you...

Coming over the Confederation Bridge - 13 KM or 8 miles of bridge was eerie.
It was foggy - so foggy you could not see the shore and yet visibility on the bridge itself was great.

As I left the bridge I entered a fairy tale world - the village at the end of the bridge looks much like it came out of a children's story book. Heading towards Charlottetown the roads are in rough shape - in a couple of spots they were a wee scary especially in the rain in others, you could relax and really look around - what a pretty, pretty place. The soil is soooo red - I can't wait to take pictures to show all of you - for those who have been here or loved here it will make you nostalgic I am sure and for those who have never been - perhaps it will make you more adventuresome and make you want to come this way.

It is only 50 KM from the bridge to Charlottetown but what a pretty drive...my sister in law has promised to take me around the island and I look forward to sharing those images with you as I snap them.

In the meantime, this morning is all about Charlottetown and exploring the old historic down town core and doing a trip report of the hotel I am in for today - the Delta Prince Edward.

The Red Island is calling

I am a fortunate person as I have a connection to every province in Canada.

Nancy & Casey Ford, my sister in law and niece live on this magnificent if tiny island and I intend to visit them for the first time this fall. I am so looking forward to the trip and am researching all I can.

I look forward to the sharing of rides and information from all of my friends on the island!
