Here it is what I found on the seat pocket on flight 24 from Maui-Hawaii to Oackland-California. I guess they didn't have time to clean the trash left from the previous passenger or passengers... No time to wash the blankets, full of hairs...
Airlines are getting cheaper and cheaper but plane tickets adding taxes and baggage fees are getting more and more pricey. Have you had a similar experience?

Esto es lo que me encontré en el bolsillo del asiento del avión del vuelo de Hawaiian Airlines número 24 de Maui-Hawaii con destino Oackland-California. Me imagino que no tuvieron tiempo para limpiar la basura que el anterior pasajero I pasajeros dejaron y menos para lavar la manta llena de pelos.
Las Aerolíneas cada vez se están volviendo mas y mas baratas en sus servicios pero el precio de los billetes incluyendo los impuestos cada vez sube mas, por no hablar del pago del equipaje.
Os ha pasado algo parecido alguna vez?

Hawaiian Airlines... What a mess (Que desastre)

Experience:

Flying from the States to Hawaii we were able to bring with us a carry on luggage, and check in one bag. The cost of the checked in bag was $25. We got to Hawaii and spent a few days at the island of O'ahu. (I'll talk about it in a future post). Then we decided to fly from O'ahu to Maui. We got ahead on time to the airport and went to check in our only bag. None of the machines for auto-checking were working. We were directed by some security men to a crowded area where a few machines were working. We did the automatic checking and paid for the only bag we planned to check in. This time the price was $17. Once you've apparently everything ready someone from Hawaiian Airlines needs to check your ID's. That's the moment of truth. They check the weight of your carry on luggage. The measures of the carry on bag were correct, typical carry on size, but we had some overweight. Our second carry on bag was almost empty, but we were told to pay for the bag we were planning to bring with us on the plane or... Empty the almost 3 pounds extra that we were carrying and weight the bag again in front of the airline representative. (If you don't do that then they don't put the tag on your paid and weighed bag or give your ID's back). We were carrying the same weight that we carried from the States. It was not about the money... It was not that expensive, but why pay now when we didn't have to pay before? Well, we were kind of irritated because... Do you know what? Once you remove the excess weight and the airline representative checks the weight, you put the stuff you removed back in the bag and go through security and get in the plane without a problem. It is so weird... So... You see yourself at the airport emptying your bag, irritated with everyone around you because you didn't expect any of these things happening and everybody is seeing your underwear, your shoes, whatever you have in your bag... Does someone understand this kind of procedure? I don't.
I must say that after we went through this I went to another representative o Hawaiian Airlines, called Ruth, to ask for a designe scarf that I lost on the plane 4 days ago when flying from the States. She was very friendly and did everything possible to find it. After waiting for a while... She came back with a hanger full of scarfs. It is amazing how many things people loose in an airplane, like I did, and don't come back to see if they were found. My scarf was there! She took the time to look for it and I am thankful for
Mahalo!

Brevemente os contaré la ridiculez de una situación que vivimos en el Aeropuerto de O'ahu, en Hawaii. Cuando salimos de USA hacia Hawaii pagamos la maleta que facturamos, $25. Nos permitían llevar con nosotros otra maleta, las típicas que llaman "carry on".
A la hora de salir del aeropuerto de O'ahu, nos encontramos con un montón de mostradores vacíos y maquinas de facturación que no funcionaban. Los hombres de Seguridad nos mandaron a una sección llena de gente, donde por fin una de las maquinas funcionaba. Seguimos los pasos y facturamos solo una maleta. En esta ocasión el precio era de 17 $. Antes de que se impriman tus tarjetas de embarque, tienes que esperar a que un representante de la Aerolínea compruebe tu identificación y te ponga la etiqueta en la maleta que vas a facturar. Eso hicimos, pero nos pidió pesar la bolsa que llevábamos extra, que tenía exactamente el mismo peso que cuando salimos de USA. Nos pidió que sacáramos el exceso de equipaje, que eran unas 3 libras, menos de 2 kilos y que volviéramos a pesar la maleta o que pagáramos por otra maleta facturada. No es que fuera muy costoso pero por que pagar ahora cuando al salir de USA, que Hawaii también es USA, teníamos que pagar?
Ahora en medio de todo el mundo, irritados, a sacar cosas de la maleta, lo peor de todo... para tener que meterla de nuevo en la misma maleta. Vaya, que el procedimiento fue sacar, pesar enfrente de la mujer representante de Hawaiian Airlines y luego volver a meter todo igual. No tiene ningún sentido. Que desastre!
Algo positivo que he de contar es que ya después de pasar seguridad, pregunté a una muchacha llamada Ruth por una estola de diseñador, que perdí el día en que llegamos en el avión y se desvivió por buscarla. Fue amable y educada y aunque tuve que esperar un rato, la encontró! Estoy muy agradecida de que al final alguien fuera amable y positivo. Mahalo!

De nuevo en la India… ya se…

Esta vez voy a hablar de Udaipur. Quizás algunos de vosotros os preguntéis por qué voy a hablar de la India de nuevo. Bueno, tengo recuerdos muy bonitos, de la visita a este país tan impresionante. Hay muchísimos contrastes. A pesar del tráfico de “locos” que existe y de la pobreza, la belleza de los paisajes y de las puestas de sol te deja sin palabras.

Tengo recuerdos maravillosos de la belleza de un Palacio en particular. Se trata de un Hotel, que hace que sus huéspedes se sientan como la realeza. Adjunto algunas fotografías del Taj Lake Palace situado en el Lago Pichola, Udaipur (India).

No solo era la belleza que rodeaba el Hotel la que me impresiono, ya que está situado en el medio de un lago, sino la limpieza (¡casi se podía comer en el suelo!), y el servicio. El servicio era maravilloso. Nos cuidaron y atendieron todo tipo de detalles, cualquier solicitud que les hiciéramos, de una manera respetuosa y maravillosa. Fue una experiencia inolvidable. Todo eso hizo de este viaje algo especial, pero el poder estar con la persona que más quiero en el mundo, ¡lo hizo único!

Hecho: La película Octopussy se filmo entre otros lugares en Udaipur, en el “Palacio Flotante” , hoy conocido como el Taj Lake Palace del Lago Pichola.

I am back to India… I know…

This time I will talk about Udaipur. Some of you might ask, why mentioning India again. I’ve great memories from my visit to that amazing country. There are many contrasts. Despite the “crazy” traffic and the poverty, the beauty of the landscapes and sunsets leaves you speechless.

I’ve wonderful memories of a beautiful Palace that as a Hotel today makes his visitors feel like royalty. I attach some pictures of the Taj Lake Palace in Lake Pichola, Udaipur (India).

It was not only the beauty that surrounded the Hotel, that is located in the middle of a lake, the cleanliness (you could almost eat in the floors!!!), but the service. The staff was wonderful. They took care of every single detail, every single request, with wonderful manners and respect. It was an unforgettable experience. That made it special, but being with the person I love the most in the world made it even more unique!

Fact: Octopussy movie was filmed in Udaipur. One of the locations is the “Floating Palace” or Taj Lake Palace today in Lake Pichola.

Hello from Dubai!

What can I say about Dubai?

It is known as the Pearl of the Arabian Gulf, and it is located on a 10 kilometer long creek. It was a fishing settlement when it was taken over in 1830 by the current rulers of Dubai, the Maktoum family. Today, Dubai is a commercial and business centre with a thriving industry. In the 1960’s oil was discovered and that led to a boom creating different industries and economic sectors with some bold initiatives such as the offshore Jebel Ali Free Zone.

Remember that Dubai, lies directly within the Arabian Desert. Temperatures are very, very high. People, like us, tourists, that are not used to those high temperatures were looking for malls where air conditioning feels wonderful. Take a look at some of that temperatures.

Summers in Dubai are extremely hot, windy and dry, with an average high around 104 °F and overnight lows around 86 °F. Most days are sunny throughout the year. Winters are warm with an average high of 73 °F and overnight lows of 57 °F. Precipitation, however, has been increasing in the last few decades with accumulated rain reaching 5.91 in. per year. (Source Dubai - Meteorological Office).

We stayed at the Rose Rayhaan Rotana, (pictures above), a well located hotel in the middle of the city, close to the Dubai Metro station. Clean, modern… with good service. I would definitely stay there again.

I was concerned about the way I should dress, because I didn’t want to offend the locals, their customs and their religion, but I observed women from around the world and locals, dressed in casual and summery clothes, with very different styles. Of course many women wear the burqa.

One must see is the tallest building of the world, as today, 3^rd of January of 2012, called Burj Khalifa. I’ll talk about it very soon.

¿Qué puedo decir de Dubai?

Que se conoce como la Perla del Golfo Árabe, y que está situada al lado de un arroyo de 10 kilómetros. En la antigüedad era un asentamiento para pescadores hasta que en el año 1830 fue tomada por los gobernantes de Dubai, la familia Maktoum.

Hoy Dubai es un centro comercial y de negocios con una industria muy próspera. En 1960 se descubrió petróleo, lo que hizo que hubiera un boom en la creación de industrias y sectores económicos, lo que dio lugar a atrevidas iniciativas como la creación de la zona libre Jebel Ali en la costa.

Recuerda que Dubai, está situado directamente en el Desierto Árabe. Las temperaturas son muy, muy altas. Gente como nosotros, turistas acostumbrados a otro tipo de clima, sin estas temperaturas tan altas, buscábamos los centros comerciales, no solo por sus increíbles comercios sino por el aire acondicionado, que en esos momentos era lo más maravilloso del mundo. Echa un vistazo a algunas de esas temperaturas.

Los veranos en Dubai son súper calurosos, con mucho viento y secos, con una media de temperaturas que se acercan o a veces sobrepasan los 40 °C durante el día, y por la noche cerca de los 30 °C. Casi todos los días hace sol a lo largo del año. Los inviernos son templados con una media de 23 °C durante el día, y por la noche con unos 14 °C. No llueve mucho, aunque en los últimos años las precipitaciones han aumentado, llegando a alcanzar los 150 mm al año. (Fuente – Oficina Meteorlogica de Dubai).

Nos alojamos en el Rayhaan Rotana, (adjunto fotografías), un hotel muy bien situado en el centro de la ciudad, cerca del Metro de Dubai. Limpio, moderno… con buen servicio. Me quedaría allí de nuevo, sin dudarlo.

Estaba un poco preocupada, con relación a cómo debería de vestirme, porque no quería ofender a la gente local, sus costumbres y su religión, pero observé que había mujeres de otras partes del mundo y también locales que se vestían al estilo occidental, de una forma casual, con ropa de verano, y con muy diferentes estilos. Por supuesto muchísimas mujeres usan el burqa.

Algo que DEBES ver cuando vayas a Dubai es el edificio más alto del mundo, al menos hasta hoy, 3 de Enero de 2012, el famoso Burj Khalifa.

INDIA - WHO SAID TRAFFIC? (¿Quién habló de tráfico?)

Many times we complain about the traffic that we find in big cities, like Madrid, Paris, Londres, New York or San Francisco. I’ve had the opportunity to see that traffic, in that cities and the one that India has. There’s no way we can compare them!

The hours that people in San Francisco spend travelling to work in the mornings or back home at night to arrive on time to work or dinner are nothing comparing with the hours you lose in an Indian road. Imagine the traffic of all these cities together and add the fact that there are not traffic rules. If you feel like it, because you see that there is a lot of traffic in your side of the road, you cross to the other one, whenever you want. Of course that creates a chaos. The traffic police, if you find them, don’t do anything. I don’t know if it is because they are desperate or because of the lack of training.

The trip from Agra to New Delhi took us more than 7 hours. It would normally take 2 hours and a half. We didn’t stop during that 7 hours, hoping to get to New Delhi on time to catch our flight to Saudi Arabia, flight that of course we missed. Please, if you are going to travel from Agra to New Delhi, don’t believe when they tell you: “Oh, the road is very good. If you go early you won’t find traffic”. Think about the worse, what means… finding goats in the road, “sacred” caws in the middle of the “highway”, extreme pollution, slammed that are unexpected, exorbitant heat… The train is better, despite the other inconvenient, that I’ll talk about soon.

The truth is that there are no words, no video cameras, no pictures that can explain what you live in the roads of India. You’ve to be there to believe all this. You have to get in the car with the hope that your driver is an experienced driver, and forget the fear of having an accident. Try to enjoy the fauna that you’ll find in the way, and try to imagine that you are in one of those Super Mario race cars, avoiding obstacles during the way. I think that would be the best way to describe the roads in India… it is like a Super Mario game.

Muchas veces nos quejamos del tráfico que existe en las grandes ciudades. Ciudades como Madrid, Paris, Londres, Nueva York, San Francisco…. He tenido la oportunidad de comprobar el tráfico de las susodichas, y el que existe en la India. ¡Ni punto de comparación!

Las horas que se pasan al manejo los de San Francisco para llegar a tiempo a sus trabajos por las mañanas o llegar a la hora de cenar a casa, no son nada comparadas con las horas que se pierden en una tumultuosa carretera India. Imaginaros el tráfico de estas ciudades juntas y añadidle el hecho de que no existen normas de tráfico. Si te apetece, y porque observas que en tu carril de autopista hay mucho tráfico, te cruzas por la mediana y vas en dirección contraria. Claro, eso causa un caos aún mayor. Los guardias de tráfico, si es que por casualidad los encuentras, no hacen nada. No sé si por desesperación o por falta de entrenamiento.

El camino de Agra a Nueva Delhi nos tomó más de 7 horas, un trayecto que tomaría como mucho por carreteras normales 2 horas y media. No paramos en 7 horas, con la esperanza de llegar a Nueva Delhi a tiempo y coger nuestro avión con destino a los Emiratos Árabes, avión que por supuesto perdimos. Por favor, si pensáis viajar de Agra a Nueva Delhi no confiéis en los comentarios… “La carretera es muy buena. Si van temprano no encontrarán trafico”. Preved lo peor, lo que implica encontrar cabras por el camino, vacas “sagradas” en medio de la autopista, contaminación extrema, frenadas inesperadas, calor exorbitante… Mejor el tren, a pesar de sus muchos inconvenientes, de los que os hablaré próximamente.

Lo cierto es que no hay palabras, ni videocámara, ni fotografía que pueda explicar las vivencias de la conducción India. Hay que estar allí para creérselo. Hay que montarse en el coche con la esperanza de llevar un buen conductor que esté realmente entrenado y olvidar el temor de sufrir un accidente de tráfico. Intentar disfrutar de la fauna que encontrareis por el camino, e imaginar que vais en un cochechito de carreras de esos del Super Mario, evitando obstáculos por el camino. Creo que ese es el mejor modo de describir la conducción India: estar montado en un cochecito de un juego de Super Mario.

Como adolescente, y en la era de las “no computadoras en casa o en la escuela para estudiantes en Europa”, (estoy hablando de hace unos 20 años), recuerdo cuánto disfrutaba de tener en mis manos un “Mapamundi”. Si, uno de esos libros llenos de mapas, que describían la geografía y el nombre de los lugares que en otras partes del mundo existían. Mi padre tenía uno, ni muy grueso ni muy delgado, pero lo suficientemente grande como para hacerme soñar en los lugares que en el futuro deseaba visitar.

Puedo recordar las ocasiones en las que él me mencionaba que cuando era joven, se había montado en un barco Escandinavo que viajaba al Norte de Europa, con el objetivo de escapar de la vida rutinaria y sediento de aventura. Aquella fue la época en la que leía y estudiaba por las noches un libro para aprender inglés, en el frío y movido camarote del barco en medio del Océano Atlántico. Como camarero le gustaba practicar el inglés con los viajeros que iba conociendo. Nunca esperé tener ese mismo deseo, como él tenía, de aprender un idioma diferente, pero cuando me di cuenta de que podría ayudarme a cumplir mi deseo de viajar a otros países, ya no pude parar.

Entre los lugares con los que soñaba visitar, se encontraba la India. Un país muy, muy lejano que imaginaba olería a especias, y que reflejaría los colores del arco iris. Podía visualizar la sonrisa de los niños, los colores brillantes de las telas, la elegancia de los edificios, las puestas de sol, las calles abarrotadas, y las vacas, si, las vacas sagradas.
