Welcome to the third edition of the Carnival of Argentina! The Carnival is a weekly round-up of posts, news, photos and other articles related to Argentina.

National holiday? Last May 25th was the anniversary of the revolution that began on 1810 and ended with independence on July 9th, 1816. But it was also the third anniversary of Kirchner's presidency. The government made an act in Plaza de Mayo with a speech from the president and the presence of well-known artists. This act was more of a political rally to promote a re-election of the president than a celebration of the national holiday. Jeff Barry has a report on the event.

Visiting El Chaltén: Maciej Ceglowski traveled to this town in southern Patagonia and shares the story of how and why the town was founded. The place is like paradise to climbers and hikers, who seek to visit Fitz Roy Mountain and Viedma glacier.

Guide to the Province of San Juan

The Province of San Juan is located in the western part of Argentina, and forms part of the Cuyo region. It has a population of 620,023, and its capital is the city of San Juan.

History: Huarpes, Olongastas, and Capayanes inhabited the lands before the arrival of the Spanish. The capital city, founded in 1562, had to be rebuilt after an earthquake tore down the city in 1944.

Geography: San Juan province has a mountainous relief, with mountain peaks and valleys between them. Tectonic movements are very frequent in the zone.

Climate: the weather of the region is arid. It has the lowest precipitation average of the country: 83 mm. The local wind, called Zonda, is very hot and dry, because it loses its humidity when it passes through the Andes Mountains. Average temperatures are 79 F on summer, 50 F on winter, and 65 F on autumn and spring.

Economy: the economy of the province is based on agriculture, especially viticulture. San Juan is the second wine producer after Mendoza. Since the year 2000, the mining industry began to grow, with the extraction of gold in Veladero as the biggest project.

Tourism:

Ischigualasto Provincial Park (Valley of the Moon): it is located in the north-east of the province. It contains Triassic deposits with some of the oldest known dinosaur remains. The antiquity of the formations is estimated in 230 million years. It was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2000. There are guided tours of the park.

El Leoncito Astronomic Complex: inside El Leoncito Reserve lies the biggest reflector telescope of the country, with 2215 cm of aperture.
Adventure tourism: in this province you can do sport fishing; windsurf in Ullum and Cuesta del Viento dams; rafting and kayaking in San Juan river; cavalcades in Ullum and Zonda valleys; mountaineering and trekking along the mountainous region. A popular route is the one that San Martín followed to cross the Andes Mountains during the independence war, travelling to Chile.

The right whales arrived in Puerto Madryn

Every year, between May and December, hundreds of right whales arrive in the coasts of the Province of Chubut. They go there to reproduce themselves, giving a spectacle to every one that's near. They can be watched at the cities of Puerto Madryn, Trelew, Rawson, and Puerto Pirámides, on the Valdés Peninsula. There are boats that sail from Puerto Pirámides every day to see the whales from a short distance.

You can see mating groups, of between 2 and 10 whales, formed by a female specimen followed by some male whales that try to mate with her. The gestation period lasts 12 months; since June you can see the first siblings, and then the Peninsula becomes a giant nursery.

Prices: the pass to the Provincial Reserve of Península Valdés costs 35 argentine pesos. Whale watching on a boat costs 50 pesos (25 for minors).

First Carnival of Argentina - N 1

Welcome to the first post of the Carnival of Argentina! The Carnival is a weekly round-up of posts, news, photos and other articles related to Argentina.

Carnival Queen: Evangelina Carrozo, Carnival Queen of Gualeguaychú, paraded before 60 world presidents at the conference in Viena to protest the construction of pulp mills in Uruguay. My life in Argentina has a post on the subject. Patrick, from Argentine au jour le jour (French) says that there are 10 other pulp mills in Argentina that pollute, and that the conference was intended for serious matters.

Real Estate Market: Laura, from Moving to Argentina, has two articles about the real estate market in Argentina. They are a great resource if you want to understand rental laws in the country and real estate abbreviations and terms.

An encounter with god: Fiona, an Irish expatriate, confesses to the reason why she came to Argentina: Maradona and the goals he made to the English. She managed to meet her idol recently, wrote an article telling the story, and posted a picture to prove it.

WRC Rally Argentina 2006 Videos

Now that the WRC Rally Argentina 2006 is over, it's time for making balances. The podium was occupied by Sebastien Loeb, who took the first place; Petter Solberg, who was second; and Gigi Galli, who managed to get the third place.

This event is known for being the one with the largest quantity of spectators of the world circuit, and this year was no exception: according to police authorities, the number of spectators of the Rally Argentina 2006 rose to 1,700,000, setting a new record for the WRC. The drivers were very satisfied with the circuit and especially with the enthusiasm of the supporters.

I noticed that many visitors of the site are interested in finding videos of the Rally, so I selected the best and made a gallery. Enjoy:

Tucuman Province, weather and tourism

Tucumán is the smallest province of Argentina. Its capital is San Miguel de Tucumán, and it has a population of 1,338,523.

History: The land was inhabited by the Diaguitas, Lules and Toconotés before the Spanish arrived on the middle of the XVIth century. On July 9, 1816, the Congress of the United Provinces ("Congreso de las Provincias Unidas") declared independence at the province of Tucumán.

Geography: It has two different areas: to the east there are flat lands; to the west, mountains. El Bolsón Mountain, with 5,550 m is the highest peak.

Climate: Tucumán is known as the "garden of the republic" because it has a zone of abundant vegetation where rain falls in great quantity. The weather is subtropical with dry station, but there are different microclimates according to variations in relief. The average temperature at the plains in winter is 52 F; in summer, the temperature can go up to 95 F.

Economy: Sugarcane production was traditionally the biggest activity of the province. But a few years ago, lemon culture became a very profitable activity. Now, Tucumán is the largest world producer of lemons.

Tourism:

San Miguel de Tucumán was declared historic city in 1999. The house where the Congress declared independency from Spain can be found in the city. On Independency Square you can see a sculpture of Lola Mora (who was a famous artist from Tucumán): the Statue of Liberty.

"Calchaquí" Valleys: You must visit Tafí Del Valle, a village standing 2,000 m over sea level with 2,600 inhabitants. There you can find the Jesuit ruins of La Banda, which was founded by the jesuits on the XVIIIth century. In Amaicha Del Valle you can learn about Pachamama, a celebration linked with fertility rites.

Quilmes Ruins: It was one of the most important pre-Hispanic settlements of Argentina. Its population rose to 13,000 at its peak. You can visit the museum and see the pieces found in the zone; you can also take a guided tour of the fortress.

Archeological Reserve of Menhirs: It has 500 stone menhirs of the Tafí culture. The proper term would be "huanca", or "wanca", a word in quechua language that refers to these monoliths as protectors of cultures and cattle. They are 2,000 years old.

Forest of Yungas, an exuberant forest with molles, lapachos, tipas, laureles and jacarandaes.

The Food: You can taste traditional food from the province, like empanadas, locro, tamales, humita, and cayote.

Sport fishing: Tucumán has a lot of resources for fishers. Most of the mountain rivers have salmon; and in the rivers of the plains you can find other fishes like bagres, bogas, carpas, tarariras, sábalos, and dorados.

Golf: The province has 6 golf courses, all of them of the highest quality.

You can also do cavalcades, canoeing, mountaineering, paragliding, rappel and trekking over the province.

Neuquen Province, weather and tourism

The Province of Neuquén lies on the west side of Argentina. It has a population of 474,155.

History: the first inhabitants of the zone were the Pehuenche, Mapuche and Tehuelche aborigines. The land was not explored by the Spanish until late in the 17th century.

Geography: to the West lies the Andean portion, with mountainous valleys; to the East lies an arid plateau.

Climate: the weather is cold, with temperate summers. Average temperatures are between 59 F and 70 F in summer, and around 39 F in winter.

Tourism:

Ski: from June to October, during the European summer, you can enjoy snow in Chapelco (near San Martín de los Andes), one of the best ski centers of South America. There are other ski centers in Bayo mountain (in Villa La Angostura) and in Caviahue.
Villa La Angostura: an ideal site for resting. You can feel its European style, and taste the quality of its chocolates, and regional foods, such as trout and deer. To the South you can find the Arrayanes Forest, something unusual in other parts of the world, because these trees don’t usually grow so much.
Copahue Spa: globally renowned for the quality of its water and mud. The complex offers services of kinesiology, massotherapy, hydromassage, mud therapy and a gym
Seven Lakes Road: a tour of 107 km that lets you appreciate the Patagonian landscapes, with lakes, forests and snowy mountains. The road traverses the Nahuel Huapi and Lanín National Parks.
Deer and wild boar hunting: you can do it near Junín de Los Andes, San Martín de los Andes, Aluminé and Zapala. You can also hunt with permission in the Lanin and Nahuel Huapi National Parks.
Fly fishing: you can fish coveted species like the rainbow trout and the brown trout.
Museums and Dinosaurs: The Municipal Museum of El Chocón shows the archeologic and paleontologic material retrieved from the zone. The main attraction is Gigantosaurus carolinii, discovered in 1993, and considered the largest carnivore of all time, bigger than T. Rex. In Plaza Huincul you can find the Carmen Funes Municipal Museum. The biggest discovery exhibited is Argentinosaurus huinculensis, the largest herbivore of the world.
Mountaineering: Lanín Volcano, located at 70 km from Junín de los Andes. It has 3,776 m of height, and it’s known for its always snowed tip. Domuyo Mountain, with 4,709 m over the sea level. It is known as the "Roof of Patagonia", because it’s the highest mountain of the region. Tromen Volcano has a height of 4,114 m above sea level. On its base lies a lagoon where ducks and black necked swans live.

WRC Rally Argentina 2006 in Cordoba

The Rally of Argentina will take place in Cordoba Province from April 27th to 30th. It will be the sixth round of the World Rally Championship, lead by Sébastien Loeb, who drives a Citroën, and followed by Marcus Grönholm from the Ford team. The pilots will run through the valleys of Punilla, Calamuchita, and Traslasierra.

A good idea for making the most of the trip would be to visit the city of Cordoba, lodge there (in a 5-stars hotel if you can), and take a tour of the city. The rally will start and end at the Chateau Carreras Stadium in Cordoba city. Then you can go to Villa Carlos Paz, a nearby city with attractions like San Roque lake, where you can practice nautical sports. On friday 28th you should visit La Cumbre, a little town with a rather large English population, and Capilla del Monte, where the Uritorco mountain stands. The cars pass through these two places, so you can expect to see them by the road.

Mendoza

Mendoza is an Argentine province located on the west side of the country. It has a population of 1,579,651 according to the census of 2001.

History: The first European visitors were Spanish and came from Peru in 1550. The city of Mendoza, capital of the province, was founded in 1561.

Geography: the zone presents three different structures: higher mountains of the Andean range, lower mountains of the "precordillera", and plains. In Mendoza lies the Aconcagua Mountain, the highest peak of America, with 7.611 yards.

Climate: sunny and dry, with warm summers and cold winters. There are fertile lands that allow for viticulture, the main economic activity of Mendoza.

Tourism:

San Rafael: There are important wineries in the zone; some of them have international reputation. You can take guided tours and taste wines also.

Las Lenas valley is an important ski center with 13 lifts that can transport up to 10,000 skiers per hour. There are 5 and 4 star hotels and a great infrastructure, that gives the valley an excellent reputation throughout the world. The ski season lasts from June 11 to September 24.

Mendoza City: in the outskirts of the city lie a variety of discos suited for different ages. It also offers mountain landscapes and even a 5-stars hotel and a casino.

Aconcagua Mountain is suited for mountain climbing, rafting, cavalcades, and guided expeditions.

Tierra del Fuego, Antarctica and South Atlantic Islands

The official name of the province is "Tierra del Fuego, Antarctica and South Atlantic Islands". It has a population of 101,079, and the Capital is Ushuaia. It’s the southernmost province of Argentina.

Climate: it’s extremely cold. The annual average temperature is 41 degrees Fahrenheit, with annual average precipitation of 500 mm.

Geography: there are low plateaus in the north and the center of the province. In the south, the Andes mountain system runs horizontally. Tierra del Fuego ("land of fire") is isolated from the continent by the Strait of Magellan, which communicates the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.

History: originally inhabited by several tribes (like the onas and yamanas) since 10,000 years ago, the region was discovered in 1520 by Ferdinand Magellan, who gave the place its actual name.

Tourism:

Ushuaia is the southernmost city of the world. Navigation of the Beagle Channel is one of the most attractive experiences in the zone. Other activities that can be done are trekking, mountain bike, canotage, kayak, fishing and diving. The city has 6 ski centers. You can also visit the Museum at the End of the World.
Rio Grande has achieved international fame for its excellent fishing opportunities. It has 5 of 7 world records.
Antarctica: in summer, cruisers take visitors to Antarctica, where they can explore the surroundings and see bird colonies, sea lions, and other animals.
Les Eclaireurs Lighthouse: also called the Lighthouse at the End of the World, after the book of Jules Verne. The writer actually referred to the one that stands on the Island of the States ("Isla de los Estados"), which also belongs to this province.

Misiones

Misiones Province is located in the northeastern corner of Argentina. Posadas, its capital city, has 965,522 inhabitants.

Geography: its rocks contain large quantities of iron, which gives the characteristic red tone to the soil of the place. The province is surrounded by three important rivers: Paraná, Uruguay, and Iguazu. The subtropical forest occupies a large portion of Misiones.

Climate: temperatures oscillate between 60.8 degrees Fahrenheit (average) in winter and 77 degrees (average) in summer, although they can reach 104 degrees on occasions. This is one of the most humid provinces in the country.

History: the region was originally populated by the ye ethnic group. Towards the end of the 15th century Guarani groups established in the territory. Sebastian Cabot was the first European to visit the region, in December of 1527. In 17th century the Society of Jesus ("jesuitas") came to the zone. They named the region "Provincia de las Misiones"
(the province of the missions).

Tourism:

Iguassu Falls are the greatest attraction of Misiones. They are formed by 275 falls, with heights of up to 230 feet. There´s a train that goes around the waterfalls, for about 4,5 miles, getting close to the Devil´s Throat (Garganta del Diablo), the most impressive of the falls.
San Ignacio Mini, where the ruins of a Jesuit mission stand. The mission was founded at the beggining of the 17th century to convert the guarani natives. UNESCO declared it a World Heritage Site.

Cruises in Patagonia, Argentina / Part one

If you want adventure, direct contact with nature, and extreme luxury, you must try a cruise in Patagonia. There are cruises that sail from Ushuaia, world’s farthest southern city, navigating through the Beagle Channel, to finish in Punta Arenas, Chile. There are other tipes of cruises, which we’ll see in a future post.

The itinerary includes:

Cape Horn, where the Atlantic and the Pacific Ocean touch. There stands the Albatross monument, homage to the hundreds of marines that perished in those risky waters.

Navigation through Pia and Garibaldi glaciers (you’ll come as close as possible to these beautiful masses of ice), channels and fjords.

Magdalena Island, a solitary point in the middle of the Strait of Magellan, and very close to Punta Arenas, Magdalena Island is a natural reserve of cormorants, sea-lions, and Magellan penguins. You can walk between 120 thousand penguins that come every year to nest in the island.

During these cruises, a variety of bonds are formed between passengers, who come from all over the world. There must be something special in the experience that unites people with such different backgrounds and languages.

A trip around Cordoba

The province of Cordoba lies on the center of Argentina. It has two different areas: a plain (llanura pampeana) on the east and mountain ranges on the west (sierras pampeanas).

History: before the Spaniards arrived, the place was inhabited by diverse tribes, like the Comechingones. In 1573, Jerónimo Luis de Cabrera founded the city of Cordoba, which is the capital of the province today.

Tourism: thanks to its weather and its attractive landscapes, the province, and especially the mountain ranges ("sierras de cordoba"), have been one of the major tourist poles of Argentina. The places to visit are:

Cordoba Capital: with more than 1.300.000 inhabitants, it’s the second most important city in Argentina. It has a large university population, a characteristic that identifies it. Its historical center has great samples of colonial architecture.
Villa Carlos Paz: it’s the main tourist center of the province. Lake San Roque allows for nautical sports, windsurf, and canotaje. It has a service of catamarans also. The beautiful landscapes of the mountain ranges invite to activities like mountain bike, trekking, rappel, cavalcades, and fishing. Night life is very important, and it’s reflected in the discos, restaurants, cinemas, and the casino.
Cosquín: every year hosts the national folklore festival, which summons great Argentine artists and thousands of tourists.
La Falda: this city at the "valle de punilla" offers contact with nature, mountain climate and adventure.

That's the reason why its geography is so varied. Each province is unique; it has its own history and culture, its own climate and tourist attractions. Soccer / River and Boca waiting for the "Superclásico"

Next Sunday, march 26, River Plate and Boca Juniors will play the most important match of the year in Argentina: the "Superclásico". They are the biggest soccer teams in the country, with the largest number of supporters; there´s no doubt that it will be a great derby. River leads the league, and Boca is one point behind.
World Soccer´s magazine editor said that this is one of the 50 best sports events in the world. It´s an excellent opportunity to see the color of the supporters ("hinchas"), and hear their chants, while enjoying great soccer.

A bit of history: River Plate was founded in 1901, and Boca Juniors in 1905. According to the records, the teams played 177 league matches against each other; Boca won 65 and River 59.

"La Bombonera": the official site of Boca Juniors says that the stadium was opened in 1940, and then modified in 1996 to make it more modern and comfortable. It stands in La Boca, a colorful neighborhood that sits by the "Río de la Plata", and it has a capacity of 57.395.

Last friday, Perito Moreno glacier started to collapse. 3000 tourists are there, waiting to see one of the most sensational events in nature. A block of ice of 60 meters detached from the ice body, and made the spectators scream. Experts believe that the show will last no more than 48 hours.

Located in "Los Glaciares" National Park , in Santa Cruz, it has 30 kilometers of lenght, and 4 of width.

The process is simple: the glacier grows over a nearby lake, and water begins to cumulate against its icy walls. With time, pressure is so big that ice starts to crumble, and that part of the glacier falls over the lake, making a loud roar, that can be heard over big distances.

Images of this event will travel around the world. Last one was in 2004, and before that, in 1988.

This march 18, SónarSound, an international festival of electronic music and multimedia art will present in Argentina for the first time. This festival first appeared in Barcelona 12 years ago.
Djs of all the world will come to play music, such as Laurent Garnier, Colder (Live), Isolee (live), Dj Yoda, Diplo, Plaid, Darshan Jesrani (Metro Area), Undo, Carlos Alfonsin, Spitfire (live), Romina Cohn, Simbad, Cristobal Paz, and Villa Diamante.
Also, Tiny Little Elements (AUT), NO Domain (VEN), Rimarchi (ARG), Kikencorp (ARG) will show their visual arts.

The place for the festival is Costa Salguero, at Av. Rafael Obligado and Jerónimo Salguero in Buenos Aires.
