Fostering a Puppy

The village guards picked up a puppy that was wandering around the other day, seemingly lost. While waiting for the owner to claim the little one it was cared for at the guard house which happens to be just across our place. The kids and I made sure not to take a peek, though, especially since B reported about how cute and friendly the pup is. Argh, we'd have volunteered to take it into the house but then we'd be heartbroken when the owner shows up to claim it. We fall madly in love with baby animals that easily.

It's a bad idea for us to foster any stray. And if no owner shows up, we'd probably end up with more pets than we can handle. We already have three dogs right now who demand all the love we can give =D.

We were really, really glad when another village resident volunteered to foster the puppy. I hope she has a strong heart when the owner shows up.

A hospital is supposed to be a place that brings health and wellness. Anything, therefore, that adds to a patient's positive attitude would be truly beneficial. I think that the trend toward chic and stylish hospital uniforms and cotton scrubs represent a very good development in hospital care.

If I were a patient, I would most definitely prefer to be surrounded by hospital staff in multicolored uniforms, including some with interesting prints. This can liven up the hospital atmosphere a lot.

It was heartbreaking to see a lot of animals left helpless when many parts of the Philippines was submerged in roof-high floods recently. The animals who survived were left clinging to roofs, unprotected from the rains and wind like many other people. When rescuers finally came, there was usually only enough room to take people, though, and many animals were left to fend for themselves.

The Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) has done its share of rescuing animals, taking them to a temporary shelter where owners can later claim them. They also provide donations of animal food for people who still have their animals with them in evacuation sites or still flooded areas.

Let us not forget the plight of helpless animals in times like this.

Philippines Still Needs Aid as Typhoon Pepeng Continues its Rage

Soon after Typhoon Ondoy left a large part of the Philippines devastated, Typhoon Pepeng arrived. It may have spared those ravaged by Ondoy but it went on to punish the northern part of the Philippines.

It seems unbelievable but Typhoon Pepeng actually made a u-turn, thereby hitting the same areas twice with its wrath.It is still in the northern Luzon provinces, doing more damage as it slowly makes its way. Large areas are in deep water, houses are completely submerged, crops have been destroyed and livestock killed. Evacuees have rushed to overcrowded emergency evacuation sites. The rains are still pouring.

The evacuees are now in the millions. They have no homes and livelihoods to return to. They have currently no food and only have the clothes on their backs. Most are already sick and they have no medicine. Local relief efforts continue but more aid is needed. We appeal for even the smallest contributions. You may get in touch with your local Red Cross. They would know how to send your help to the Philippines.

The Philippines Thanks President Cory Aquino

After former Philippine President Corazon C. Aquino has been laid to rest beside her husband Benigno Aquino Jr., the Filipino people should put all the expressed emotions into concrete action by living up to the lives of genuine public service of Cory and Ninoy.

Ninoy Aquino gave up his life for the freedom he sought for the country. Cory lost her husband to that cause and chose to give the rest of her life to it, too, and upon achieving that freedom, to rebuilding the country left in shambles by the Marcos dictatorship.

The Philippines is still a work in progress. We still have much to do. We can best show our gratitude for the sacrifice of Cory and Ninoy by doing our share, in our own little ways, to protect our rights and democracy.
