I believe even if. . .

What do you do when God has spoken directly to you? I bet you’re thinking, “Well that’s easy Brandon, 'you just believe it and obey!' ” I’m sure you might have heard the same saying as myself growing up: “God said it. I Believe it. And that settles it.” All these words sound good when you’re typing them or reading them. It’s easy to say when God speaks just take it as it is and believe it. But what about when you hear God directly speaking to you, it becomes specific and personal and more often than we like His word/words WILL BE CHALLENGING!

That’s where I find myself today in the middle of a word from God with extremely challenging circumstances. You better believe when God speaks it will require all the faith that’s within you to believe. It might even cause you to take a step back and laugh, “God seriously?!” That’s exactly what happened to Abraham and Sarah. . .

“Then God said to Abraham, “Regarding Sarai, your wife—her name will no longer be Sarai. From now on her name will be Sarah. And I will bless her and give you a son from her! Yes, I will bless her richly, and she will become the mother of many nations. Kings of nations will be among her descendants.” Then Abraham bowed down to the ground, but he laughed to himself in disbelief. “How could I become a father at the age of 100?” he thought. “And how can Sarah have a baby when she is ninety years old?”

– Genesis 17: 15-17

Okay, Abraham you and I should talk because I feel like I can relate with you right about now. I’m in that same boat where it’s so easy to laugh and say, “God. Seriously!”

Can you relate, has God ever told you something or asked you to do something that completely stretched you? If you aren’t there yet, keep following Him and I can guarantee He will say/ask the unexpected.

So what do we do when we walk through unexpected impossibility? Honestly, I really don’t know. But I’ll tell you what I am doing and will continue to do: Worship, worshiping God through it. Choosing worship over worry, doubt, and confusion is defiantly not the easiest choice but I know that’s what my God deserves so it’s the choice I pray I will always choose. He deserves praise no matter if my mind can wrap around His supernatural plan or not. I may not know how He will work through this circumstance but this I do know: He has called me. He has chosen me. He will not throw me away. He is always with me. He has a great plan for me. His son is at His right hand interceding on my behalf. He has filled me with His spirit. He has equipped me and has blessed me with every spiritual blessing. Therefore I will praise Him. I will praise Him in my pain. I will praise Him in my tears. I praise Him not because of my temporary situation but because who He constantly remains.

I pray this might encourage someone that also might be walking through a difficult moment in God’s classroom.

back in the classroom

As I sit in the New Orleans airport with so many emotions rushing through my soul I can’t help but let one emotion overtake the others. Excitement. That’s what I feel pure excitement. I’m coming alive again, I feel resurrected. I’m about to be back in my element, the puzzle piece is no longer lost but it’s back in its rightful place, the place where it belongs and its beautiful. . .

O’ how I’ve longed to get away from it all, the distractions, the busyness, and overwhelming things of life and get back to me and God. God spoke to Moses and said, “Come up to the mountain to the place I have shown you and I will give you instruction (the 10 commandments).” That’s what I feel like a portion of this journey to Thailand is about. “Brandon I’m calling you away from it all for a time and I want to teach you and give you some instruction. Get away and spend some time with me.”

The possibilities are endless; God could direct me anywhere He can speak to me about anything I’m just ready to hear His voice. I’m ready to spend time with him on a more intimate level again. I want to serve Him again. In some mysterious way the broken, the poor, the sick, and the lost are Christ. He said, “When you fed the hungry, gave water to the thirsty, gave clothes to the naked, visit those in prison; you did it onto me.” How humble and mysterious our God truly is. I’m ready to be amongst them and Him again.

In Africa I believe God asked me to “step into His classroom” I’m starting to see that Africa isn’t where it ended but only where it began. God’s classroom isn’t a season but it’s this thing we call “life”. Either we can be a good student and learn from the good teacher or we can believe with all of our foolishness and selfishness that we know more than He and learn nothing and be miserable the entire time we are in “class”. I don’t know about you but I choose the better way but not always the easiest way and that is to trust God and be a good student.

I have struggled when it comes to writing blogs I never know what to say and what not to say. Often times I start typing then I start back spacing because I’m worried that I’ll be misunderstood. I never want to come across as rude or offensive however I do want to be real and some things just need to be said. When I blog I want people to experience what missions is really about I’m talking about sharing the good, the bad, and the ugly side of it. Anyone that really knows me knows that I have a heart to travel across the world to the broken and the desolate places and bring the hope that can only be found in the Gospel. I pray that by being transparent when it comes to missions that the Holy Spirit would move on the reader’s heart and compel him/her to action. For we ALL (not a single person excluded) have a responsibility to serve in missions (whether that be locally or globally).

Today I want to talk about what God has been doing and defiantly not finished doing in my heart and when it comes to giving. I pray that I won’t be misunderstood but living in Africa with white skin seems to have its advantages and its disadvantages. Let me explain . . .

When I first arrived to Africa I was overwhelmed with all the need that I seemed to be amerced in. Being white must mean that you’re a magnet that draws all those in need to you. People come from everywhere and anywhere to explain their situation, their need, and you can do to help them. Like I said I was overwhelmed what can I do? I’m just a guy that raised funds to come to Africa to help people. Exactly, I came to help people and here are a bunch of people that need help now what am I going to do to help them? My first reaction was to help who I can with what I have then after that then the rest will have to wait until I could receive more resources.

I’ll never forget what the Lord spoke to me one day, “Brandon you got to stop trying to be everyone’s savior. For you have limits and can let people down. Brandon I don’t have limits and I never lack. I alone can carry such a burden. Stop carrying this burden on your own and give it to me. I’ve called you here to point people to ME and to be obedient to my voice for I’m always speaking but you’re not always listening. For I am an all powerful and loving Savior trust me and obey me.” After hearing such truth I quickly had to repent I didn’t see it before but I was trying to be a savior for these people. I was trying to meet all their needs and make everything okay for these people. I believe God wants people to rely on Him and not the “white man” for everything that they need.

What I’ve learned to do when (not if but when) I’m approached by someone in need is to listen to God’s voice and see what He is compelling me to do in that moment. Sometimes yes he wants me to give something in the moment to the person. In other times I don’t feel compelled to give anything. Now before you label me as a horrible missionary/Christian let me explain. Although God doesn’t lead me to give anything I am to do something. In a situation like this I often will say something along these lines, “I’m sorry man but I can’t give you anything today. However I don’t know if you believe in the God of the Bible but He is a loving father who loves to give great gifts to his people. Turn to Him, believe in Him, trust in Him, and I believe he is going to take care of all your needs. Let’s pray and ask God to help you in your need.”

If you’ve been a Christian for any period of time you’ll know God always won’t work the same way. So things change but the most important thing is for us to always be listening to the Lord and His leading. If we can remember to do that then we can never go wrong.

Just this morning I had a little guy approach me asking for money for food. At times I want to evaluate whether the person in need is truly going to use this money for what he/she is asking it for. But it’s not my place to evaluate the heart and the intentions of the person. It is my place to respond in a manner that is Christ like and allow God to take care of searching the heart and the motives. Also its important for Christ followers to not just respond to needs but to our Father’s leading. Christ often will compel me to actually go buy the items that the person is asking. If they are asking for food I’ll walk into KFC and purchase a meal and deliver it to the person in need. Again I believe the most important thing for Christ followers is to listen to His voice and be obedient no matter how difficult, uncomfortable, or how high the price may be we must learn to trust Him. For His ways are far beyond our own. (Trust me I not trying to preach at anyone I’m currently walking and learning how to do these things as well)

Recently I believe the Lord has begun to mess with my heart about leaving this very computer I’m typing on with some of the missionaries in Africa. This raises a million questions in me. What will I use when I get back to the states? How will I afford to buy I new one? Will I get another before I go to Thailand? If not how will I communicate with people back in the states? There are a million questions I can ask but all I hear answering back to me is this: Trust me. Trust me. Trust me. I believe the truth behind giving is God is testing and examining our heart. And to do that often times its giving till it hurts and strikes something in our hearts. Often times giving is a sacrifice and if it isn’t I question is it really a gift at all. I know one thing I can’t out give God. If He chooses to never give back what I gave away its still okay. Because In Him I already have all I need.

what's an expat?

Growing up in South Louisiana I’ve experienced my fair share of hurricanes. I remember one particular evening after a hurricane we lost our power. Out of boredom I lit a candle and pulled out a 1,000 piece puzzle. Now, I don’t know if you’ve ever attempted to put together a 1,000 piece puzzle but I tell you the pieces are tiny and all the pieces look the same in the dim candle light. I remember getting extremely frustrated because I was confident, I was absolutely certain that a particular piece went where I was trying to put it. It didn’t matter how I turned the puzzle piece it didn’t even matter if I flipped the piece around it just wouldn’t fit. Strange yes, but I got a feeling very soon I might be able to relate with that puzzle piece . . .

Living on the “mission field” I’ve experienced many different things. I have a strong feeling; some would label my experiences as unpleasant and uncomfortable. But that’s not the case for me. I’ve grown to LOVE the different way of life here:

· Crazy street side markets

· Let’s just say I have to constantly remind myself I’m a Christian when I’m on the road overseas

o Can only drive a few miles before hitting speed humps

o Obnoxious pot holes

o “Robots” (traffic lights) that never work

o Kombi (taxi)drivers that drive all over the road

o Very, very, very, confusing intersections

o Cattle constantly standing/sleeping in the road

· Getting lost just about everyday

· Waking up in the middle of the night to a flooded house (happened quite often)

· Living in “unsafe” areas

· No air-conditioning (so when you open the widows every insect in Africa decides they want to come live with the you)

· Exposed to interesting smells

· Being white often means you’re approached for money

· Often being misunderstood

· Being fined for some really ridiculous things

Use your imagination and if it hasn’t happened to me directly I’m sure it has happened to some of my missionary friends. The truth is not every day is easy, comfortable, and sure you miss the states from time to time but I wouldn’t exchange a crazy day overseas for a great day in the states for anything. I’ve grown to love serving overseas. I’ve grown to love the crazy driving and the crazy road side markets who often times have the most “interesting” venders. I’ve come to the place where I love it all. Missionary Palmer Chinchen has a word he uses to describe someone with such behavior. Here is an excerpt from his book True Religion:

“I’ve been using a word to describe the lives of people who leave their country to make home a far and place. This word describes an extraordinary life, a life of uncertainty, a life of exhilaration, a life worth living. The word is expatriate.

Expatriates live differently. Expats soak up the world in which they land. They don’t try to take home them. They absorb the smells. They soak up the uniqueness of the culture.

Expatriates are resilient. They have resolve and learn to adapt and improvise. They expect little. They find guilty pleasure in luxuries as an air-conditioned restaurant, a hammock by the beach, an iced Coca-Cola… in a glass bottle.

The Sandals all in-clusive frequenter is not the expatriate. The get out of the tour bus and take pictures crowd is not the expatriate. The loud obnoxious guy in the hotel swimming pool is not the expatriate. Becoming the expatriate involves a new way of living, a new way of thinking, a new way of believing, a new way of dreaming.

I’ve observed something true in practically all expats. Once they have tasted the haphazard, horn-honking, chickens everywhere, annoying venders, pungent-air, soggy-air, crazed taxi drivers, drunk policemen, disorienting, take-life-as-it-comes world away from home . . . they want more.

When expatriates return “home,” their souls shrivel. They cringe at chain anything. The suburbs and minivans and strip malls and fast food suck their spirits dry. They can’t wait to board the next plane to somewhere far away.”

When I read that excerpt from his book I thought, “Geeze, how does this guy know me? That’s exactly the way I feel!” After experiencing all the crazy things I’ve experienced on the mission field I don’t have the attitude “get me out of here, but I want to experience more.” I found where my puzzle piece belongs and it fits perfectly, it’s a beautiful fit where it connects with its surroundings. I’m looking forward seeing what God’s purpose will be after returning “home”. I know God has a purpose behind all that He does and He has a purpose for me returning. Who knows he could desire me to get married and come back. I mean there is a pretty incredible girl that I got my eyes on :-)

As you all may know my African journey is quickly approaching its end. This has been the most incredible experience that God has ever brought me on. And yet I still know that many more journeys still lie ahead. It’s just like Pastor Scott always says “The best has yet to come!” Throughout these past couple of months I’ve made some close friends with many people from all over the world. God has given me the privilege to pray for many people, bring the gospel to thousands of kids, disciple many young people, and see Him work in mighty ways. Throughout my journey I’ve seen the scripture in Matthew 19:29 come alive.

Matthew 19:29 (NLT)

And everyone who has given up houses or brothers or sisters

or father or mother or children or property, for my sake, will receive

a hundred times as much in return and will inherit eternal life.

God has confirmed what I already believed and what others have stated, “I belong on the mission field.” After this confirmation I was left with a question, “Am I called to continue to serve in Africa or does God desire me to go elsewhere?” After seeking God in prayer and fasting I believe I may come back to Africa in another season but as for now I believe there things I must learn as God leads me elsewhere. I believe God has a unique call on my life and He is preparing me to go to some tough and hard places, places that few choose to go.

I say all of the previous to say this. . . I believe God is leading me to go spend a few weeks in a nation that has been on my heart for some time now. This nation is part of the 10/40 window. The 10/40 window is an

area:

Where 2/3 of the people of the world reside

8 of 10 of the poorest people live

8 of 10 of the people living here have the lowest quality of life (life expectancy, infant mortality, and literacy)

Its often been referred to as “most unreached” area of the world

I believe the Lord is leading me to go to Thailand. Thailand is a nation in crisis where more than 65 million people call home. Thailand is a nation made up of more than 92% Buddhist, 5% Muslims, and only 0.1% knowing Jesus. (That’s more than 64 million people who are lost.) As I read the previous statistics I can’t help but think of:

Romans 10:14-15 (NIV)

How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in?

And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard?

And how can they hear without someone preaching to them?

And how can anyone preach unless they are sent?

It is my desire to be obedient to what the Lord is leading me to do. And that is after my African journey is completed I am to travel to Thailand and serve the Thai people to see if this is where I am to be planted permanently. I’ve always believed that a missionary going onto the field is bigger than just him. You see, God uses many coming together believing, praying, and supporting to get that person on the field. It’s impossible for us to do it alone. I’ve heard John Piper make the following statement:

“Some go, some send, and some simply disobey.” - John Piper

I pray that you’ll search your heart and ask the Lord what you’re part may be. I’m fund-raising all the necessary funds to spend 2-3 weeks in Thailand, which will be about $2,000. It is my prayer to be in Thailand by May and with your help this can be possible.

where is the church?

Just a week prior to me coming to Zimbabwe I had issues crossing the border when I left South Africa. It was quite an ordeal. Let’s just say it was a reminder that I was not in the United States. The issue was I didn’t totally understand the border crossing process. And since I’m an “American” they give Americans 3 month visas to stay in South Africa. It’s a standard it doesn’t matter if u just want to go for a day you still will get a 3 month Visa. Well every time you enter the country you get a “transit” stamp that operates under that 3 month visa until that visa expires then you must get another 3 month visa. Well when I went to South Africa with the Salemis I told them I was going for 30 days. They never told me anything and just stamped so I assumed all was taking care of. Boy was I wrong. When I tried to leave South Africa to come back into Swaziland I was greeted with the most ANGRY African man telling me I was staying in SA illegally. I said, “I’m sorry I don’t understand I’m afraid you’re mistaken.” Well that ticked him off even more. I kept trying to ask questions to figure out what I did wrong and the man kept getting angrier and angrier. He looked at me and yelled, “You overstayed in my country and you must pay me 1,000Rand now!” Still confused of this “crime” I committed and I’m starting to think this guy just wants money just to pocket it. I said “I’m sorry sir I don’t have 1,000Rand.” (I actually did have the money but I know how this game works I’ve been in African too long) He eventually let me through but I had to pay the fine before I could enter back into the country. So when I arrived into Swaziland I took care of it and sure enough I needed to pay this ridiculous fine. No one could answer my questions until. . . I tried to cross the border with P Mike. When I tried to come back into SA with P Mike would you believe they weren’t gonna give me a visa. They were gonna just stamp my passport and let me go into the country illegally then when I tried to leave they were gonna raise hell again. P Mike said, “Brandon they like to do this to people that don’t understand how this works to make money off of them.” Can you believe it? TIA at its finest. P Mike explained everything to me and showed me what to look for to prevent them from taking advantage of me.

P Mike told me, “You see that was just a preparation before you go through Beit Bridge. When we cross the border into Zimbabwe it could be worse.” I’m thinking he is messing with me but some of the other pastors were telling me he wasn’t. I’m thinking, “Great this just aint ever going to end, but at least I can get some experience on how to do this.” Well once we arrived to the border I see that this border is defiantly different than the others it’s much busier and they just do so many things that don’t make any since at all but then again TIA. Well I had to get a double entry thirty day visa to say in Zimbabwe. To get this visa I had to fill out this form and talk to the “Chief Border Officer” sounds very intimidating but again I’ve learned to play their “game”. Started to make small talk with guy and brag about how awesome I think their country is and through in as much siSwati as I can (they always love that) needless to say I became friends with the guy and it was a piece of cake. Pastor Mike said I was blessed because this day was very usual compared to his previous encounters he has had at that border. P Mike has stayed up to 24 hours at that border facing one problem after another.

Zimbabwe has been great. We are approaching the end of our 21 day fast and I have to say I never seen a group of people that have been so on fire for God than the Zimbabweans I’m with. Every night is a night of worship and prayer. And every night I go to a different campus and witness this same fire for God. You can bearly hear the music because you hear EVERYONE either is singing praises, praying their heart out, and on their face speaking in tongues the entire church is worshiping and seeking God not just a small few. I’ve never seen such a hunger before ever before in my life it challenges me and also encourages me to see such hunger. Seeing this hunger upsets me when I think of most of the American church. Why aren’t we seeking God with such passion? These people have so little but have great faith. The truth is they might not have much in material things but they have so much other things we don’t have. We have so much to learn from such people.

I pray that once I return God would make a way for me to help our church witness such things. Whether that be leading teams to oversees mission trips or allowing them to serve without strings attached in the states. I’m convinced that serving oversees and serving such people keeps a church from becoming selfish, comfortable, and gives a better perspective on the things that really matters.

I’ve read accounts and have also seen some horrible evil that has happened in Africa. Things like: men going into communities and cutting of the breast of women so they can’t even feed their own children, men massacring a population of people because they look different , encountering a pregnant woman and wanting to kill her but afraid it might be bad luck so they decide to just cut off her ears, nose, and lips, women and children raped over and over again, children taken and forced to become killers (I read an account of a group of kids forced to bite the legs off another child and if they didn’t they would be killed) truly the list continues. What else is happening in the rest of the world this is just Africa? I have one and only one question to ask WHERE IS THE CHURCH?

Let me quote John Scott for just a moment:

“If a house is dark when nightfall comes, there is no sense in blaming the house; that simply happens when the sun goes down. The question to ask is "where is the light?" Similarly, if meat goes bad and become inedible, there is no sense in blaming the meat; that is what happens when bacteria is left to breed. The question to ask is "Where is the salt?" Just so, if society deteriorates and its standards decline until it becomes like a dark night or a stinking fish, there is no need in blaming society; that is what happens when fallen men and women are left to themselves, and human selfishness is unchecked. The question is "Where is the Church? Why are the salt and light of Jesus Christ not permeating and changing our society?" It is sheer hypocrisy on our part to raise our eyebrows, shrug our shoulders, or wring our hands. The Lord Jesus told us to be the world's salt and light. If therefore darkness and rottenness abound, it is largely our fault and we must accept the blame.”

Church we have a responsibility to love our neighbor and the reason there is such darkness in this world is because there is no light (we aren’t doing what we were commanded to do). I’ve never had such a burden and seen such responsibility than to be on my face in prayer. It’s my desire that the Holy Spirit will lead me and show me how I can be Jesus to such people. Church we have to be obedient and lay aside what might be easier and comfortable. Christ has commanded not asked us to care for the poor, oppressed, and to love our enemies.

I pray that you will join me and repent for our sin of disobedience. And not only ask God how we can become salt and light in this world but be obedient to His leading no matter how hard, uncomfortable, or how much it might cost to do it. Things must change in this world and Christ desires to use His bride, his beloved to bring forth this change. It can’t be done in mans will or might but by the Holy Spirit of God that dwells within us.

figuring myself out

I’m trying to figure myself out. . . Today when I hear of adversity, pain, injustice, or anything like it I find myself running towards it. I’m attracted to those areas like bugs are attracted to light. I need to get there and bring the hope, comfort, and the love that is found in Christ. But I use to not be like this. I actually use to run the opposite way. Adversity and pain made me uncomfortable and I wanted nothing to do with it. I tried to ignore it and I even tried to deny its existence. I would turn my head and close my eyes and would walk away. I can remember watching TV commercials about the hungry African babies with the fly on their face and a man comes on asking for your money to help support the kids. Another time watching CNN and seeing all the devastation after a tsunami destroyed thousands of homes and killed many in Shri Lanka. For a moment I was saddened then after about 10 minutes I would forget it all happened. I would forget while others were fighting for their lives. I remember hating that about myself and I wanted to do something.

There are over six and a half billion people on the planet,

which is crazy, I can’t even get my head around that kind of a figure.

But what we do is approximate humanity to the nearest half a billion

as if near enough is good enough. The truth is every single one is someone,

every single one is a life, with a hope, with real fears, everyone is unique .

When did such a drastic change take place in my heart? The truth is I still can feel slightly uncomfortable but I know that it’s not about me and my comfort but it’s about Him. I believe God has placed something in my heart that pulls me towards people that are in these situations. I believe God has called me to be a representative of His loving nature and to testify He loves them deeply and desires that they turn to Him everything they need can be found in Him. When I get discouraged and realize how unworthy I am I remember that there is a magnificent, wonderful, and loving God that lives in me. How humbling that such a mighty sovereign King would come and live inside of me and love people through me.

I remember seeing this South African man search in trash cans while I was waiting in a plush, comfortable, air conditioned car a week ago. I have to sadly confess I didn’t do anything to help this man. I regret my apathy but in that moment I began to pray under my breath: “God why did you bless me so lavishly and yet there are people in this world who seem to be so desprate? I know you see them and know of their pain, I just don’t understand. God create in me a heart that sees people the way you see them. Help me see sin the way that you see it. Help me love people like you love people.”

Shortly after this man disappeared into the crowd and I prayed that silent prayer a conversation started in the car about two young beautiful girls that were staying on the same compound as I. The two girls are sisters and two years ago when they were only eight and ten years old they witnessed their father die instantly after getting his throat sliced. After this horrible event occurred the older sister of these two young girls decided to lock her sisters into a room where men would come in a rape them repeatedly for many days. You see the older sister was raped before and she thought that her sisters needed to feel the pain she went though. As I heard the story something in me began to hurt, for I knew both of these girls. A few days after hearing this horrific story of these girls we realized these two girls and most of the others on the compound didn’t own a Bible. We bought Bibles for them all and started Bible studies. Our first study was Jeremiah 29:11-14. After that study we began to see the kids reading their Bibles on their own. Molly, one of the girls that saw her father killed and was raped two years ago memorized and recited Jeremiah 29:11-14 to me. I remember thinking; this is what it’s all about. This is what will bring forth the change that is so desperately needed, Jesus and ONLY Jesus. Not good intentions, money, or even supplies. Jesus is the only one that can turn this continent and our world around. We all have a responsibility as the church to introduce people to Jesus.

Yesterday after returning back to Swaziland I had a great talk with a close Swazi friend and this is what he said after I told him I was leaving for Zimbabwe next week and I wouldn’t return back to Swazi , “Brandon you have encouraged me so much since you’ve been here. You’ve always pointed me towards God but what I don’t get is you people come and do all this good and then you just leave. I don’t understand.” I told him, “I know goodbyes aren’t always easy but sometimes they’re necessary for us to do what God has called us to do. But I can tell you that I hate saying good bye and I really don’t want to go back to the states and live for long. But I want to live in another country and help people by introducing them to Jesus. I’m still praying, “God where do you want me to go?”

I have been praying to God asking where and what’s next and I believe God has given me another step that I will need to take in faith. I will tell you all about it in time. I just don’t believe I need to come out and say it just yet. But please stay in prayer with me because I believe God could use you to help me with this next step of faith I’ll need to take. . .

I’m still a work in progress and I don’t know when this transformation took place inside of me but I’m glad it did. I desire and believe I’m called to travel the world and love people the way Christ loved. We can’t get discouraged because the need is so great but we have to focus on individuals God has set in our path. We can’t change the world, a culture, nor even the individual but we can be faithful to what God is leading us to do. He does the transforming of the heart and flips the community right side up. All He asks of us is obedience nothing more and nothing less.

God's Classroom

It’s been 7 months and one week since I left the United States to travel 9,000 miles to Africa to serve as a missionary. I had my thoughts and even some expectations but I never expected what God actually had for me. I felt like as soon as I stepped off that airplane and stepped on that hot dry ground I actually stepped into a classroom. But this wasn’t just an ordinary classroom neither was the teacher an ordinary teacher I felt as if I stepped into “God’s Classroom”. Just like any other classroom this classroom has been full of teaching, assignments, and even tests.

I’m sure you’ve seen the commercials, read the articles, or heard someone speak of the situation Africa has been in. The crazy thing is today, you don’t have to travel to know the need that rests in our World. However traveling does make it all more personal and real. After being in Africa for a period of time the statistics now have a name and a face (and that changes everything). A teacher tends to use objects in his classroom to teach. Such as charts that might be on a wall, a chalkboard, or maybe even a PowerPoint Presentation. When you step into God’s Classroom you’ll find that he begins to teach with all that surrounds you.

Africa is a land that is drowning in an ocean of pain, disease, poverty, and injustice. There has been times I’ve gotten so angry at God because I knew that God in his infinite power could very well do something about all the pain. God began to teach me about his heart and his sovereignty. These are tough lessons to undergo but most of what you learn in God’s classroom is tough and difficult. That’s why few ever choose to step into His classroom.

I hope you’ve read or least heard of the scripture of the sheep and the goats (if you haven’t go read it Matt 25:31-46). We can see in this passage that God values “the least of these” not only does he value them but he commands his followers to care for them. If we aren’t careful we can get caught up in all the routines and tradition of Christianity and miss the complete heart of God. When we don’t have a daily relationship with God we can easily miss His heart and turn into a religious Pharisee. I love how the president of World Vision Richard Sterns interrupted Matthew 25:42-43 for our modern day:

‎"For I was hungry, while you had all you needed.

I was thirsty, but you drank bottled water.

I was a stranger, and you wanted me deported.

I needed clothes, but you wanted more clothes.

I was sick, and you pointed out behaviors that led to my sickness.

I was in prison, and you said I was getting what I deserved.”

Everyday in Africa isn’t the same but the message I’m learning is. That message is God loves the poor, the oppressed , the needy, and the sick. Everyday I can feel Him molding my heart and depositing more of His heart in mine. I still have so much to learn, I don’t have it all together I doubt I ever will. I pray that everyday I will remain teachable and God will continue to create a heart in me that looks like his. . .

Before you read this: It would be beneficial for you to first read “Broken” .To read broken search through June's entries. I make reference to a story that I explained in "Broken" .

Geeze it has been too long since I’ve done a blog entry. We’ve been quite busy doing a lot of ministry. We completed the power camps for this year. Many probably thousands of children heard the good news through the power camps. We traveled to all 20 something care points praying, dancing, telling bible stories, playing games, and feeding the children. I want to share a story of one of the children I saw at the care points. I was asked to help at the game station. While at the game station I saw this little girl in this purple jacket coming to our station. She had this little ‘wash rag’ carried with her, to wipe the drool from her mouth the little girl drooled profusely. I began to ask someone if they knew if she had any medical problems (it was obvious something wasn’t right). After questioning I discovered the girl had cerebral palsy. I began to watch this girl she was smiling and having probably the most fun out of all the children. Watching her brought me to tears and also reminded why I’m here. I keep thinking about this little girl when I think about her I pray that God will protect her. Living in a country where 80% of girls before they turn 18 are raped at least once is dangerous. I can imagine especially for girls with disabilities such as the one she has. I pray she would hold onto the joy she experienced in God’s presence. I believe what we did was more than just a fun day for the children. I believe God truly was there and was moving. (Below are a few pictures of this girl. Also while at the camps I saw a little girl that I saw a few months ago. Thank God this time I saw her she was experiencing things a child should experience and not what a child should ever experience. Only after being in Swaziland about two weeks I had the opportunity to look into the eyes of a statistic. It’s actually the one I gave you a few moments ago in the previous paragraph.

“80% of Swaziland’s girls before they turn 18 are raped at least once.”

When you hear that statistic you probably feel a sad emotion right? Well looking into the eyes of a 5 year old child after they’ve been raped brings this horrible statistic to a reality that brings your heart to your toes and ignites an anger against this horrible injustice. I will never forget looking into this girl’s eyes after she was raped probably only a few hours before she came into our presence. While at the care point I saw her little face making a craft. I got so excited to see her I quickly went searching for Jessie the children’s cup nurse to ask how she has been. Jessie said she is a regular at the care point and comes on a daily bases. I’m still waiting to hear how she is doing. Keep this little girl in prayer she is against so much and I pray that she is no longer being abused. (below are some pictures of this little girl)

We also had bomake (women’s) camp and 412 (youth) camp since I last blogged. Both were amazing! The cooks who cook for the children at the care points are volunteers. They do so much for our kids. They are a mother to many of the AIDS orphans who attend our care points. Once a year they bring the bomake to camp. Where they are pampered and poured into. (to all the HOF people it’s basically Merry Christmas to me that our ladies have) The ladies had a wonderful time I had the opportunity to go up one day and serve. I had a great time seeing the joy all over the women and to also here testimonies. God is so good!!!

While at 412 camp God stretched me greatly. He worked on areas I needed some improvement in if ya know what I’m saying. lol Needless to say I’m more flexible and probably more easy going after camp. God moved and on our youth! Some started to open up and start talking about things God is doing in them. This is HUGE!! In Swazi culture people rarely open up and talk about things. So for them to open up and start talking about their issues and the things God is speaking to them you know God was truly moving.

I LOVE being in Africa. For the first time in my life I can say with confidence and certainty I’m exactly where I need to be and I’m in the will of God. I’ve never been happier! But just because I’m happy doesn’t mean everything has been smooth sailing or a piece of cake. I’m gone through some tough things since I’ve been here but I still have joy. You see, I’ve learned something it’s impossible to be happier somewhere else outside of God’s will. It might cost a lot of tears, not understanding, and heart ache but when you get there. God it’s amazing!!!!!!! I heard this quote this week:

“I’m safer in the will of God, which may lead me to an unfamiliar place. Than it is to stay home in your comfort outside of His will.”

I find so much truth in that statement! God is teaching me so much here and I’m loving it all. Pray that I come back the states in March cause I just might find a loop hole to stay here longer. Lol

Mother Theresa is a hero of the faith. She spent most of her life caring for what the world considers “the least”. She is a role model I pray God could use me to become a fraction like. Listen to these impactful words that she not only said but lived:

People are unreasonable, illogical and self-centered.

If you do good, people will accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives.
Do good anyway.

If you are successful, you will win false friends and true enemies.
Succeed anyway.

Wow, she loved well! I believe God is calls me to do something similar. Not that I want to be Mother Teresa but I believe God has called me to work with the poor and the sick.

I began to think the other day how amazing it is to do what I’m doing. I have the privilege to serve people that God values so dearly. He treasures and values “the poor” those who lack, those that have a need. And yet He loves me enough to allow me to go and reflect Him to these great people. I feel so honored but yet so unworthy to do such a task. I don’t take this opportunity lightly, I can easily be replaced.

Thank you God for allowing me to do something I love and do it for an eternal impact. I don’t understand your ways for they are far beyond mine.

Let me update you on what’s been happening in the great southern region of Africa and Children’s Cup. Last weekend Pastor Ben and myself brought a small team to Xai Xai, Mozambique. Pastor Joe Champion has planted a church in Xai Xai and this weekend they were dedicating the building. We went to work with the children and help with the food. We had a great time although we had a huge obstacle a language barrier. No one spoke nor understood English. Even the guys we brought from Swaziland had this barrier because none spoke nor understood siSwati the Mozambiqueans (?) only spoke Portuguese. We found ways to work it out though. Xai Xai is a beautiful city right on the Indian Ocean. One morning I awoke early and saw blue whales jumping in the ocean it was quite a sight to see. I thought I was dreaming.

This past Saturday I participated in a kids outreach a local care point. We called it “Super Saturday” we had jumping castles (spacewalks), puppets, games, worship, Bible stories and many other fun things for the kids. It was a great day! This week we are going to four care points and doing a very similar thing. As you can see there is never a shortage of things to do here we are busy loving and serving people. Its great and exhausting LoL Pray God will give me some energy Lord knows I need it!

Continue to pray for the Swazi people and the missionaries here. About a week and a half ago a guy broke in a lady’s house we go to church with. The guy raped the land lord’s maid and then stabbed the lady that goes to church with us daughter three times. Her daughter is fourteen years old. The stabbing didn’t puncture any vital organs. But as you can imagine the girl is traumatized by the whole event. Things like this happen way to frequently around here. The Lord said “If my people who are called by my name, would humble themselves and pray, and turn from our wicked ways He said He would hear from heaven and come and heal our land.” So pray! Please pray so we might see a change in Swaziland.

About two weeks ago I was asked to speak to the youth. I was nervous and hesitant but agreed to do so. We were starting a new series titled “Extreme” and my topic was extreme love. The Lord led me to speak on “loving through the cross” for when we love the cross we can love anybody even our enemies. Because we forgive them for they know not what they are doing. When we love like this it doesn’t make sense the world doesn’t understand this love. For the world is only capable of loving conditionally. Then I shared the story of Australian missionaries to India the Staine’s family. Graham Staine and his two boys were burned to death in their vehicle by Indian rebels in 1999. What was so amazing was Gladdest Staine’s comment to the people right after they pulled her husband her 8 and 10 year old’s scorched bodies out of the vehicle.

“I have only one message to the people of India. I’m not bitter, neither am I angry. But I have one great desire, that each citizen of this country should establish a personal relationship with Jesus Christ who gave His life for our sins. Let us burn hatred and spread the flame of Christ’s love.”

I used this to illustrate what extreme love looks like in a modern day. Many people came to the altar that evening to exchange their bitterness and hatred for love. It was a great night.

Oh yea, also pray for this weekend. We are having the first ever youth camp. We are taking about 50-60 teenagers away for this weekend and praying they will connect with God and He would do a work in each one of their lives.

walking through tough times, just walking through not staying

When I think about the Lord I’m left in awe. Although I don’t always understand His ways, I know He is painting on a canvas that’s much larger than my point of view. . .

This past week has been a busy and quite difficult week for me. For the past two months I had a roommate and friend to share this incredible African journey with. When my friend left last Sunday I had to go through another transition very similar to what day one was like but not as fun. This time I was alone. I felt isolated and found myself missing home, family, and friends more than ever. It wasn’t a fun experience. The Africa I loved so much felt like a prison of solitude and isolation. I couldn’t sleep at night all I could think about was the comforts of home and friends. On top of going through the “brick wall” as missionaries call it I was asked to speak to 412, HPC’s youth group. Also I was responsible preparing the interns for Intern Sunday. I was caring a huge load and yet was going through so much in the inside. Through the whole experience I felt so far from the ones I love but yet I knew God was so close. Although felt Him with me He remained so quite. I needed Him to speak to me and just say something.

“Say it will be ok and you will make it through this or something” I would plea. But I would get nothing. After a few days of going through this persevering, trying so hard not to show what I’m going through to the other missionaries and the interns.

God may not have said anything, but He was defiantly doing something. I found myself immersed in an enabling grace to complete the many task given to me. 412 went far better than I could ever expect or hope for. God came and ministered to His people. The interns and I had the opportunity to pray with many youth. Some came to the alter in tears wanting to repent and to exchange bitterness for love.

Also the interns did a superb job yesterday for Intern Sunday. The interns performed a drama Sunday to the congregation and also shared their testimonies. Hearing their testimonies and seeing them act in the drama left me in tears. I’m proud of each one of them.

God taught me a lot this week. And the same amazing enabling grace that helped me preserve and complete the tasks given to me also helped me fall back in love with Africa. I’m more excited than ever to be where I’m at. I went through a tough moment but I’ve learned from it. I’m focused and ready to continue to be used by God to minister to what the world considers the least.

Making a stick & mud house!

I'm offically a Swazi. . . my new name is Jabulani

I think I’m going to cancel my flight home and just stay here in Swaziland. I love Swaziland and Children’s Cup way too much to leave. . .

A few weeks ago I went with a team to “Lomahasha” a rural community about two hours away from Mbabane (where I stay). Our purpose for traveling to Lomahasha was to do power camps in three care points. Power camp is very similar to Vacation Bible School we did games, crafts, snacks, Bible stories and many other activities. My personal responsibility was to work games. I wasn’t too crazy about the idea at first, playing games in the middle of the blistering sun. But after the first group came to our station to play I was confident I was right where I needed to be. We played many different games with a parachute. My favorite game was the “Lion game”. All the kids would sit on the ground around the parachute and cover their feet with the parachute. Then all the children were given strict instructions that they can’t look under the parachute no matter what happens. :-) After all feet are under the parachute I would pretend I was a lion and I would go under the parachute and pull the kids under the parachute. They would all start laughing so hard as they wait in anticipation if they will be next to pulled under. But while I’m pulling them under there is another teacher walking around the parachute trying to “save” the kids from the hungry lion. The kids would scream, “Help! The lion has me” and the teacher would run to the rescue. It was a great game all the kids LOVED. After playing the game we would explain the significance behind it. You see the lion represented the devil. He wants to devour us and to hurt us. And when the devil comes to try to get us if we call on Jesus (the other teacher) he will come and rescue us.

This past Saturday I had the incredible opportunity to build a mud house. It was a dive straight into Swazi culture. We dug dirt from the earth until there was a huge pile of dirt next to the structure where the house was being built. Then we would go downhill and fetch water from a stream. We would put the huge jugs on our heads and carry the water uphill and mix the water with the dirt. We mixed the dirt and the water making mud then we threw the mud on this stick structure.

If you have been following my blog you will know that some of the locals call me “cheese boy”. Well after working on the house this day one of the guys said, “You are no longer a cheese boy but a true Swazi. We must now give you a Swazi name.”

Someone suggested, “I think he should be called Jabulani.”

Then others said, “Yabo! (Yes!) he is defiantly a Jabulani” (Jabulani means happiness)

I have a prayer request I would like all my readers to help me with:

Since I’ve been in Swaziland I’ve been hounded by many, many people. They ask me can you help me with money here. . . or can you help me financially here. . . It’s gotten quite overwhelming to say the least. I can’t go to town without being stopped at least 5-6 times. I want to help people but giving a hand out isn’t always the best way to help someone. Also I don’t have enough resources to help everyone I see with a need. If you can join with me as a pray to the Lord for discernment I would greatly appreciate it. I need all the help I can get.

Overall I’m having a great time loving and serving the amazing people of this beautiful country. I really could see myself living here long term!

a story can change everything

(Please know that I haven’t shared the name of my friend in this blog. I want to protect his identity. He gave me permission to share his story with you.)

One of my fellow Swazi friends just shared his story with me. I have to say after hearing it I find myself broken once again. This story is his reality. It’s not a book were he can quickly flip a few pages and see what’s next but each day he lives in faith and trust things will get better. His faith encourages and humbles me. Let me share his life’s story with you. . .


This is a pineapple field i saw on the side of the road.

It all started when he told me that Thursday his aunt passed away. He said, “I wonder if my mom even knows her sister died.” Out of curiosity I asked, “Where is your mom? Why wouldn’t she know?” To answer this question he had to open the book of his life and read the story from the very beginning.

He read, “You see Brandon my mom was a good woman and a hard worker. But for whatever reason my dad abused her and us. So she left to get away from him, she moved to South Africa. And since we lived in rural Swazi I never really had the opportunity to go to school. One day a woman saw my daily life and asked me, “If you ever had the opportunity to go to school would you ever go?” I answered, “Of course I would I want to make something of myself.” Brandon I thank god for this NEW MOM that took me in and let me stay at her place. She let me stay with her and her children and she even paid my school fees. She was so good to me but her children weren’t so nice to me though they kept telling me “you’re gonna fail. You are never gonna make it all the way through school you’re so far behind.” But I have nothing against them. I forgave them. My NEW MOM would get very upset when she saw her kids treat me that way.”

I have known this particular person for quite some time but I never knew this about him. I never knew his story. The crazy thing is he isn’t done we are only half way through it. Let’s continue . . .

“Some thought I was only going to school to cause trouble. The teachers didn’t really accept me. But over time they started to see I really just want to learn. So they started treating me slightly better. Let me tell you about the time our school was taking a trip to Durban. We needed 1,500 Rand to go ($193). Well I didn’t have the money so I wasn’t going. I was ok with not going I didn’t have to go. All the other kids were so excited about going. They would come up to me saying, “We’re going to Durban! We’re going to Durban!” Kind of teasing me. Then two days before the trip my teachers pulled me aside. They told me since I’ve been doing so well in school and staying out of trouble they wanted to provide me with the funds to go on the trip. But even with the trip cost taking care of, I still didn’t have the funds for food for the trip. The teachers went a step further and gave me the needed funds for food for the trip. All I could do after this was thank God. I was so happy! Brandon God has been faithful through it all. He is all I really have. It can get tough and hard at times and I just cry. But God will come and comfort me through in those times.”

The longer I’m (Brandon now) here in Swaziland the more I’m seeing everyone has a story, everyone including myself. These stories don’t always have the happily ever after ending. In fact we don’t know how our story will end. However there is one thing I do know and its:

Matthew 6:33

“Seek first the kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and He will give you all you need.”

I’m also realizing that being a Christian doesn’t mean things are always easy. There is no “become a Christian and things will always be great Gospel.” No, sometimes God asks use to walk through a season of suffering. And in those times it’s tough and hard it seems “like we are walking through the valley of the shadow of death.” There is good news even in that season of our life. The good news is we are just walking through we aren’t camping out in the valley we are just walking through it. We just need to trust God while we are walking through, for He is surly walking with us through it although He might be very quite.

I share stories like with you because I want others to see what reality is for some people. So we can see we are so blessed and at times we don’t even know it. We must thank God for our blessings and pray for others that are walking through circumstances that may be difficult. We must pray that they will have strength to preserve through life’s difficulties. Pray for peace in the middle of the chaos and confusion. Pray that they will never give up on hope or on Jesus.

an awesome God, trust, and a cheese boy

I want to open this blog entry with a thought I’ve been thinking:

It’s absolutely amazing to travel to a foreign place and see so many new things, people, and cultures. And to know that God knows all about all of it. He knows each person by name. He knows their story. He knows their situation. He knows their needs. He knows all about those mountains ranges that I never seen before and I’m seeing now for the first time. He shaped them with His very hand. He knows about each animal on the savannah everyone from the tiny ant to the large elephant. He knows them all.

After reflecting on that thought I’m left feeling pretty insignificant and left in complete awe of the incredible God we serve. It’s pretty amazing isn’t it? That we serve an incredible God that knows all everything. He knows about the things we never thought about considering. He knows about those who live rural areas. Most of us don’t even know they exist, but God knows.

God is teaching me so much here! But one thing specifically He is teaching me is trust. To trust Him no matter what the circumstance looks like. In a previous entry “broken” I spoke about the little girls being raped. That was a situation God was teaching trust. At first I was so angry. Honestly I was angry at God. How could He allow that in all of His sovereignty? The Holy Spirit quickly convicted me, “For who are you to judge the Lord?” Although I don’t understand that situation but I know God’s ways are so much higher than my own and I have to fully trust Him weather I understand or not.

The locals call Dustin and I “Cheese Boy” which means you’re spoiled, you don’t have to work, or everything is handed to you. They call us that not out of being derogatory or anything it’s kind of a joke. We don’t mind it. The kids in the care points call us “mlungu” which means “the white guy”. I think it’s hilarious. I was told in other parts of Africa you don’t want to be referred to as that but here it’s ok.

I’m trying to learn as much siSwati as I can while I’m here. I have many great teachers that won’t allow me to pass them unless a great them with something in siSwati. I love it!!! Who knows how much I’ll learn in the next couple of months. I might become fluent in siSwati that would be awesome!

Acts 3 speaks about a beggar at the gate called beautiful. Let us all refresh ourselves with the story.
Acts 3:1-11

Peter and John went to the Temple one afternoon to take part in the three o’clock prayer service. 2 As they approached the Temple, a man lame from birth was being carried in. Each day he was put beside the Temple gate, the one called the Beautiful Gate, so he could beg from the people going into the Temple. 3 When he saw Peter and John about to enter, he asked them for some money.

4 Peter and John looked at him intently, and Peter said, “Look at us!” 5 The lame man looked at them eagerly, expecting some money. 6 But Peter said, “I don’t have any silver or gold for you. But I’ll give you what I have. In the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, get up and walk!”

7 Then Peter took the lame man by the right hand and helped him up. And as he did, the man’s feet and ankles were instantly healed and strengthened. 8 He jumped up, stood on his feet, and began to walk! Then, walking, leaping, and praising God, he went into the Temple with them.

9 All the people saw him walking and heard him praising God. 10 When they realized he was the lame beggar they had seen so often at the Beautiful Gate, they were absolutely astounded! 11 They all rushed out in amazement to Solomon’s Colonnade, where the man was holding tightly to Peter and John.

I’ve had a similar experience here in Swaziland. Every day I walk to the market and see this crippled “gogo” (grandma) sitting right outside the entrance to the market. She will sit on the hard stone floor for hours in the cold with on her light jacket. I’m not quite sure what’s wrong with her legs but I know she can barely walk.
Like I said I see her EVERY DAY but sadly I never acknowledged her. I never greeted her with a “Sawabonai” (Hello) or anything. The Lord quickly started to convict me on this. I told Dustin Anderson to hold me accountable because next time I see her I have to acknowledge her and speak with her. Sure enough about a few hours later we needed to go to the market and there she was in her same spot. Dustin looked at me and said, “There you go! Here is your opportunity!”

So while Dustin went into the market to get our needed items I sat on the ground in the freezing cold next to the gogo and spoke to her. As soon as I sat down she smiled with the biggest smile you could imagine. As if someone finally sees me and acknowledges me. With her huge smile I noticed she had no teeth. She greeted me with a big Sawaboni!!! At this point everyone that is walking by is staring at us. Before this no one seemed to know this gogo existed. She continued to speak in siSwati and she couldn’t understand my English. She quickly found a nearby person to translate. Our translator was this very elegant Swazi woman that seemed to be annoyed at this whole idea of me trying to commutate with cripple gogo. I soon discovered the gogo sits there every day in the freezing weather and knits items to sell. All she had was two sets of turquoise socks which she was trying to sell for 15Rand ($1.50). I bought the socks to support the gogo. It made her day she was so happy. Afterwards I went into the market. When we exited the market she saw me and waved and smiled with her HUGE smile. I had to give her a little something else. I introduced Dustin to my new gogo friend with no translator. She communicated with us that she would buy new yarn with the money I donated to her. We blessed her physically and also spiritually as we left.

I don’t know what it is about this gogo but she has a special place in my heart. I can’t stop thinking about her. Her smile is burned into my head. Ever since I left that market that day I’ve been praying for her constantly.
I met her for the first time yesterday. Today we went to the market and there she was in her spot. Again she me and before I could greet her she waved across the market at me with her huge smile. I went and tried to talk to her but I couldn’t understand a thing.

I’m going to bring this nurse with me in the near future over to the market. She speaks siSwati and she can translate for me. When she comes I plan to pray for her there in the market. I can’t wait to update you when that happens!

I want to first and for most apologize on this delayed blog. I didn't realize how slow the internet was here. And how limited my time would be to use it. I’m sorry guys I really do love and appreciate you. I will post blogs and email as much as I can.

As I reflect on the past two weeks I'm left speechless. God has taught me so much these past couple of days. But anyway let me tell you what has been happening. . .

This journey up to this point has been far different than past "mission trips". Living in a country you face a totally new set of challenges than you would by just visiting. I've been learning how to drive, shop, and how to live when there is a difference in two cultures. It has been fun but quite difficult at times. Right now there are eight guys living under one roof. There is myself, Dustin (from HPC in the states), Laybo, Karl, Philani , Sapewo, Musa, and NalaNala . The guys are awesome I really enjoy hanging out with them. They are many different ages I believe the youngest is about 14 and the oldest is around thirty. They all have a story and a testimony that would humble you. I’m looking forward to learning from them and sharing the next 11 months of my life with them.

I’ve spent the last 2 weeks with the Swazi interns. The internship is quite similar to the intern programs in the states. Just as my house mates have a story you should hear the 7 interns also have some crazy stories. The internship students are from three different countries The Congo, Zimbabwe, and Swaziland. The interns are hungry for more of God and they serve in any way Children’s Cup or HPC needs them to. Such as the other day all the interns, Dustin, and myself helped a team unload a huge ocean cargo container full of food for the kids in the care points. The cargo container was delayed many weeks due to a strike in Durban, South Africa. The care points were approaching the end of their supplies so it was good to unload and quickly get the supplies to those in need.

Today I broke. I witnessed something that I will forever remember and it brings a statistic to reality. Today I was asked to travel with the medical team to the care points to assist in medical exams. What I witnessed broke me. . . While at the first care point the nurses treated many typical cases such as ringworm, worms, diarrhea, coughing ect. Then this one child came in I honestly thought it was a little boy. After hearing what the teacher said I knew that it couldn’t be true. The teacher said, “She has sores in her vagina.” (the child was about 5) The nurse brought her to a side room and examined the sores. The nurse came back and said, “It’s hard to tell but there is a possibility she could be getting abused I’ll need to refer her to a hospital for further examinations.” I started asking many questions of course. Little did I know what I would witness at the following care point about 20 min down the road.

We made it to the next care point. There were kids everywhere absolutely everywhere at this care point. They were playing on the playground equipment, watering the plants in the garden, and some were just waiting for food. Then there was a line waiting to come to clinic. The clinic started just as the last one did same ol same ol. Then it was time to examine the last child. The last child was another suspected abuse victim. (this child was about 7 and there was evidence to believe she was) you could see it all over the child I truly believe that she was getting abused. I wasn’t the only one. The child looked like an abuse and scared to death puppy lost, scared, and jumpy. (I’m just trying to show you how she was acting) The staff had already tried to report it and obviously things haven’t changed. So they are going to try again. Before the child left the nurse prayed over her and then the nurse asked me to pray. For the first time in my life I didn’t know how to pray. I didn’t know what to say. God obliviously saw everything this child was going through. So I prayed a quick prayer over her in tears “God what do I say what can I say. This is your child. And I’m speechless. Be her protector and go home with her since we can not.”

I was broken, confused, and speechless. What do you say? What do you pray? On the bus ride home the nurse could tell I wasn’t ok. So we talked about all we just witnessed. I told her what I was thinking. I told her, “That was my first time I didn’t know how to pray. And I don’t know how to express what I feeling at this moment.” She said, “Brandon you’re feeling the way you’re supposed to feel. And the moment you don’t feel there is a problem. When I first got here and witness these very things I broke down. I broke down in the middle of a care point weeping. I wanted to know, “where was God in the middle of this injustice.” And God spoke to me and taught me to trust Him. Brandon you have to trust that God is the Father to the fatherless and He is the Hope to the hopeless weather we see it or not. He is all that He is weather we see it or not.” I believe all she said but I’m still broken and speechless.

Please pray for the people in Swaziland. And please pray that God will help me and strengthen me to do what He planned for me here.

I just came back from the Children's Cup open house. We were honoring two new missionary families that are moving to Swaziland to work with Children's Cup. The first family is the Prince family. Stephen and Krista along with their three children (Avery-7, Iliea-5, Ellie-3) are planing to move to Swazi this September. They are still trusting God and are still gathering their support. I love this family and their HUGE heart. I had the privilege to hear their testimony and its quite amazing! To hear what they are willing to let go to serve is so encouraging. Natalie and Barton have become two good friends of mine. They both have been Swaziland and their heart seems to be left there. Barton is an extremely talented guy that paints and sketches with so much emotion. I love looking at his pictures he has drawn of Africa. He sells his work and the proceeds go straight to Children's Cup. Barton is currently writing a book about an experience he had while in Swaziland. I 'm looking forward to reading it. Natalie probably has to have one of the biggest hearts I've ever seen. She has a heart to serve and love people. Her spirit is contagious. She is a very strong woman that I highly admire.

trusting God

So much has happened sense I last posted a blog. I’m leaving for Africa in about a month; plane tickets have been purchased for Tuesday May 25. I’m so excited; God has been blessing my socks off! All I have is about $1,700 left to fundraise. I know God will provide the rest of my needs. I just can’t stop thinking about how good God has been treating me. He is going beyond providing my needs and now He is starting to give me unspoken desires. I’m so honored and yet so humbled all that He is doing.

This entire fundraising journey has been so unpredictable! When I began to fundraise I started in discouragement, for I had no clue how to raise the funds. But God came through every single time. He taught me how to trust and to not worry. I’m a worrier and trusting doesn’t come naturally for me but God was so patient with me. I remember the first time I chose to trust instead of worry, it was so crazy! I remember laying my head on my pillow and saying “God I hand this situation over to you. Let your will prevail over my own.”That’s exactly what He did! And His plan was so much better than mine. Trusting God isn’t always easy or natural but it is WELL WORTH IT!

I feel like I’m living the scripture where it says "No eye has seen, no ear has heard, and no mind has imagined what God has prepared for those who love him."

I’m starting to dream again, I’m starting to dream bigger dreams. Not selfish dreams, but dreams that I believe come from the father’s heart. I’m dreaming of one day starting an orphanage. An orphanage in the middle of a place that has been forgotten, a place that God has seen for so long. He has heard cries of people and He has been waiting for a man He could u send to show them His love. I’m dreaming and listening to where this place is. I pray that God will reveal this place to me when He sees I’m ready.

Until that day comes I will do whatever He wants me to do. And for now I know that I am to go to Africa for the next 10 months.

baton rouge dream center

For the next week I will be serving at the Baton Rouge Dream Center with a team from Memphis, TN. As I drove to the dream center I didn't know what to expect. I didn't have a clue what we would be doing or anything. Today we did two outreaches and they were amazing.

The first thing we did was we went door to door in the community surrounding the dream center and we passed out candy and Gatorade. It was amazing! We were giving out stuff left and right and even had the opportunity to pray with some people. I'll never forget what one woman told me and this other girl. We knocked on her door and gave her the candy and Gatorade. And she said, "you two seem very happy to be doing what you're doing. This is very good what you are doing for the community. It's good that you youth can do this for others." What I loved about what she said is she noticed we were happy to bless her. I hope that it was a witness to her that the church loves her and God loves her. Who knows maybe that's what she really needed today.

The other thing we did was we boxed hotdog dinners and delivered them to apartments and trailer parks in the community. While delivering dinners in the apartment building we came across two little girls and they became our escort around the apartments. The two girls were so happy they could help. They would show us where to go and who would want food and who wouldn't. God Bless those two girls. Then we went to the trailer parks to deliver dinners and candy. These trailer parks were rough. Sheets as windows the front door wouldn't close all the way just a really rough neighborhood. Everyone in the trailer park recognized our red HPC serve shirts and was so happy to see us. They weren't happy to see "Brandon" or any of the other individuals but they were happy to see HPC dream center. The dream center is well known around their community they have left a positive mark on it. I'm glad we can come and learn from this great church. I know this is the beginning of a great week.

fundraisers

On Saturday, March 20 I will have a double fundraiser to raise funds for Africa. The first part of the fundraiser will be pre sale jambalaya lunches (lunches are $5 a plate if you would like tickets please contact me ASAP ) Plates can be picked up at Ascension Christian High School from 10:30am - 1pm. The second part of this double fundraiser will be a HUGE garage sale taking place in the school gym. Garage sale hours are from 7am - 3pm. Please tell everyone you know and come out!

Another fundraiser we are planning is "A Walk for Hope". This event will take place on Saturday, April 10 from 9am - 12pm in the Gonzales Municipal Park . There will be free food, beverages, spacewalks, music, face painting and tons of fun. We are setting a goal to raise at least $10,000 for this event which is very reachable! If at least 50 people can spread the word to their friends, family, co-workers, and neighbors and raise $200 a piece we would reach our goal! Also I will be talking to businesses to see if they would be willing to support the cause.

Come out and let's just see what God will do!

"Remember justice is what love looks like in public" I absolutely love that quote. I was reading a magazine article about human trafficking and came across that quote. I'm trying to keep myself aware in what's going on in our world. I have to say I'm shocked in what I'm gathering. How could I have not known all this? How could I have been so secluded? I just don't understand. Here are some things I've gathered:

the fastest growing crime on the planet is human trafficking
there are more slaves on the planet now than ever before in human history
there are over 27 million slaves in the world today, that's more than the population of Australia
over 22 million children are forced into the sex trade every year
In India children costs less than cattle
50% of human trafficking victims are children
Slave traders made $32 billion last year alone, that's more than what Nike+Google+Starbucks made combined
In 2009 1.1 billion people had no access to clean drinking water
3 million people died last year from preventable water related diseases
Experts predict that half of the global population will be living in areas of "acute water shortage" by 2030
97.5% of water is saline and ocean based its unable to be consumed. 1.5% is fresh but is not easily accessible. Much of the rest is polluted, leaving 0.007% of the Earth's water available to the Earth's 6.8 billion inhabitants.

Are you shocked? I was. Now that I'm aware of this it leaves me thinking, "what can I do? I have to do something. But what?" These statistics break my heart. I know that can be used as a figurative of speech, but there is literally something inside me that breaks. I love what this girl said in the movie Blood Diamond she said, "It's kind of hard to go back to sipping lattes and acting like everything is okay after seeing all of this..."

I know that the reason I'm sucking oxygen from this planet is to comfort injustice head on. I believe it's my "calling" if you will to do this. I will commit my life bringing hope to those that have gone forgotten, and also making the world more aware to what's going on and show them ways we can make a difference. I encourage you all to start becoming more aware to what's happing in the world. And let's do something about what we learn!

"lets get real and do something"

Wow what a weekend! This weekend we launched a new ministry for our church and I was honored to be a part of it. Two friends of mine felt like God wanted them to do something to help the homeless. Temperatures reached record lows in the 20s for south Louisiana. So Wednesday night at church they made an announcement asking for jackets to bring to the homeless. When I heard the announcement I knew I had to help. Friday night I went with three others to my buddy Kenny's house to organize the donations. The response to the announcement was amazing, people gave generously and graciously we filled Kenny's living room and porch with all the donations. It looked like the Salvation Army in his house! We stayed at his place until 3 Saturday morning organizing and making other preparations. After getting a few hours of sleep Kenny, Nicole, Ashton, and I loaded up a truck with donations and also stuff to make a hot soup and headed to New Orleans! We dropped off the donations at the "New Orleans Mission House". We couldn't cook the soup Saturday but we decided to go back the following day to cook it. That's exactly what we did! We cooked a hot soup for 50-80 homeless people. It was amazing we spent four hours hanging out with the homeless. All the guys were grateful and very appreciative for everything. I loved hanging out with those people because that's what they are. We put a label on them "homeless" but they are just ordinary average people that we can learn from. All they need and want is some love. One of the guys told us, "no one spends time with us. People come and drop off stuff and leave and thats great and we appreciate it. But you guys have stuck around and spent time with us and that's rare. Thank you for caring and spending your Sunday with us it really means a lot." I was speechless after that guy said that.

I have a huge heart to love and reach out to people. And I hope I can do it for the rest of my life. What we started this weekend is not the end but just the beginning of a ministry or should I say a lifestyle that we as people of Household of Faith will continue to live.

hope

There are many different words in the English language. We use words to describe, educate, and converse. But of all the words we use, I believe "hope" has to be the greatest and most valuable There is so much meaning behind that one word.

Doctors say when a cancer patient looses "hope" the illness begins to intensify and the patient may lose their fight with the terrible illness. There is power and value in hope! When it comes to Africa I believe God has given me a theme if I can call it that. You may have already picked up on it, its HOPE. I believe God wants his people to keep hope and don't ever lose it. 1 Corinthians 13:13 tells us that there are three things that will last forever- faith, hope, and love. I believe this verse tells us that it will always be available, although we may choose to reject it or forsake it. It is my heart to partner with Jesus and bring hope to the people of Africa.

I realize that the people of Africa have faced some terrible and some undescribable things. I just pray that they will meet Jesus and see the hope that is in Him . Life doesn't always become easier as a Christian but there is a peace, hope, and a grace that comes knowing Christ.

I love the word HOPE. . . I hope that all of us, people everywhere, will never lose hope we will never forget the power, and meaning in it.

dear francis

While I was in Africa I met three girls from the states that were also on a mission trip. After meeting them we began to discuss why we were in Swaziland. One of the girls asked me if I have ever seen a documentary of Swazi titled "Dear Francis". I have never heard of it. After getting home I searched youtube for any possible trailer or video clips. I found a video trailer. After seeing the trailer I had to order the film.

"Dear Francis" is an incredible documentary of the AIDS/HIV epidemic in Swaziland. It looks at AIDS through the eyes of the Swazi people. And also through the eyes of two young college students from the states. As I watched I became overwhelmed with the statistics:

- 67% of the population lives off of less the 45 cents a day

- 88% of 15 year-old boys will be dead by 2015 because of AIDS

- Swaziland has the highest HIV/AIDS percentage than any other nation

- 12% of Swaziland's population is orphans

- Of those between the ages of 15-23, 53% of are HIV positive

- Witch doctors tell the people of Swazi they can cure their AIDS by sleeping with a virgin

- Hungry children will often have sex with someone for an exchange of food

- Children are often raped by family members and teachers

While watching the film I began to get "choked up". Just at the things these people go through. I learned so much from the film. It encourages me to pray and to do something about it. I believe God holds me accountable to all that I see. I can't wait to partner with Jesus and people to help this nation.

I believe God has shared His heart with me. He has shared his heart for Africa. I know He has heard every cry, He has seen every tear, and He has seen all the injustice. And it breaks His heart. I know that he has not willed that his people will perish and live a life of pain. As I think of Africa and her state I recall this scripture:

Isaiah 62:4

"Never again will you be called "The Forsaken City" or "The Desolate Land." But Your new name will be "The City of God's Delight" and "The Bride of God" for the Lord delights in you and will claim you as his bride."

My prayer for Swaziland and for all Africa is that they will no longer be identified in what they lack but God would restore/replenish and give a new identity.

I can't wait to get back to Africa and to be a part of what God is doing.
