DMZ Tour - Korea

During my stay in Korea, DMZ tour was probably one of the best things I've done. For those who have absolutely no interest in war history and your only purpose in visiting Korea is shopping, then sadly this tour is not for you~~

I've researched extensively online on the agencies that provides the tour and after some comparison, I recommend http://www.koridoor.co.kr/

2 simple reasons:
- Price (They are the cheapest)
- They are affiliated to USO (United Service Organizations)

And of course, they did not disappoint as well.. It was $$ well spent~~

Be sure to sign up the DMZ/JSA & 3rd Tunnel TOUR. It costs USD 80 or KRW 96,000.
They have another DMZ Tour which costs USD 36 but does not include the JSA. I would not recommend that since I enjoyed JSA the most.

Officially on the "North" side~~

Was told not to be funny with the soldiers or else face the consequences~~

North Korean Soldiers on the "other" side

The Bridge of No Return - Where POWs made the choice of settling in the North or the South and their decision is final...

A tree which was blocking the view of the North from the South, which resulted in the "Axe Murder" was chopped down at this spot... The North retaliated instantly by having the 2 US soldiers killed. This is in memory of the 2 slain soldiers

We couldn't take pictures of the 3rd Tunnel which apparently some of the tourists could not understand or do not want to.. I decided to respect the rules and so, did not take any pictures..

It's not as scary as what the tour guide said it would be before we went down.. But the climb up was seriously taxing~~ For someone like me who dislike exercising and of cos do not exercise, I do not like to go down again~~ But I did manage to climb up alive.. You are warned thou~~

We also went to the Dorasan Station which was a gateway to North Korea from South Korea. Of cos, that did not happen.. The station is still there thou..

Some pictures and details of the tour is omitted so that you can experience it yourself.. But all in all, I would definitely recommend DMZ tour as one of your "must do" list in Korea~~

Korea - Travelling to and around Jeju

I had been to Korea twice and for the 2nd trip, I've stayed for approx 6 mths and there are so much things that I can blog and write about..

For a start, I will post on Jeju.. Someone told me that that place is a rip-off and I shouldnt go.. But how wrong that someone is.. In my opinion, Jeju is the best trip I've made in Korea..

Travelling to Jeju

For a start, I recommend taking a plane to Jeju.. It's just an hour from Incheon by flight..
Besides Korean Air and Asiana Airlines, there are a few domestic airlines for you to choose..

1. Eastar Jet - www.eastarjet.com
2. Jinair - www.jinair.com
3. Jeju Air - www.jejuair.net
4. T-way - www.twayair.com

Depending on the timing and dates you've chosen, pricing may differ. You need to check all the websites to see which airline provides the best pricing..

We went Jeju late march and ticket cost was only S$90+ (return ticket with all tax, fuel surcharges, etc included)

Next, travelling around Jeju..

There's a shuttle bus within Jeju but I strongly strongly recommend renting your own vehicle.. It's more convenient, the roads are easy to access and price friendly..
There are a few car rental website like axis, hertz etc. But I really like KT Kumho (www.kumhorent.com). But pls sign on as their member, you will get about 50-70% off the rates publish on their website. Their membership is free.

I rented the cheapest car for about 2 days and with Full CDW (Car Damage Waiver) included, it cost only 68,000 won+ (about S$ 70). GPRS is provided free for Jeju car rental. Petrol was about S$50 and we did manage to drive around Jeju.

Staying in Jeju

I've used www.booking.com as shown in my website for my hotel booking.
It was really more than what we expect for the price that we paid.. The rooms are clean and huge..

Brisbane Part 2

We travelled up Harbour Town to do some shopping.. Got a pair of Levi Jeans for less than SGD 17!! It’s the only pair left.. Didn’t manage to get much things, pretty much the same usual brands that we saw in DFO. In the end, bought the most items from Woolworths, food, food and more food.. We got quite a no. of their house brand prdts, it was pretty decent in terms of price savings and food quality..

Before I continue on to Sunshine Coast, The Big Pineapple and The Ginger Factory, I have to admit that I did not fully enjoy and explore the 3 places.. Not much photos taken as well..

All down to one reason: I was feeling like crap due to excessive drinking.. Before you jump into any conclusions, I need to explain myself.. Red wine is extremely cheap, or should I say, awful red wine is extremely cheap.. We played some card games during the night, and I was on a roll.. A losing roll.. I practically finish most of the wine.. Till now.. I can’t take any red wine.. -_-”

Anyway, continuing on the trip, we drove to Sunshine Coast and the beach was just amazing.. Clear cool waters and light sandy beach.. As mentioned, didn’t manage to get in the waters due to bad condition.. =( However, when we got to Sunshine Coast, I presume it was a surfing class taking place.. So.. Plenty of eye candy.. Made the trip just a little more worth it..

We also went to The Big Pineapple and The Ginger Factory, but we didn’t went in to play.. We just visited the retail stores and roamed around the places where admission ticket is not required..

Note:

- Buy the pineapple from The Big Pineapple, it’s juicy and extremely sweet..

- Just opposite The Big Pineapple is the Macadamia Nut Farm, definitely worth a visit to buy the Macadamia.. Nothing much to look but the Macadamia is delicious!!

Following The Big Pineapple, we went to The Ginger Factory.. I for one dislike Ginger.. So wasn’t very fond going, but my mum loves ginger, so was hoping to get some ginger candy for her.. There are other shows in the Factory, but of course, wasn’t in the mood to go.. Thankfully, there are a few stores inside the Factory, so we spent some time shopping and just looking around.. Honestly, other than the shows (I didn’t get to go, so unsure if it’s good), shopping and the tram ride, there pretty nothing much you can do..

We concluded our Brisbane trip with lots of shopping around the same places, casino time and losing our way.. Apologies for the very "undetailed" trip.. It's quite some time from now.. Still hope you've enjoyed reading..

Brisbane before the Flood ~~

I was lucky enough to travel with my friends to Brisbane on Etihad Airways paying only staff price for the plane ticket ..

Before we left for Brisbane, we decided to rent our own car and travel around Brisbane which we believe is a more cost effective and convenient way.. Of cos, GPRS is essential.. I don't remember which website we've booked our car but it was at a pretty reasonable rate compared to the other car renting company. We've also gotten some discount coupon from some blogs. You can try researching online and see if you can get the same deal!! You can try: http://www.vroomvroomvroom.com.au/, however it is best if you do more research.

When we arrived at Brisbane Airport, we walked out to take the free shuttle bus that brought us to the car renting company nearby, after all the paperwork was done, we took the car and drove off to our 1st destination, a shopping mall close to the airport!! The DFO Airport complex, with 120 brand outlet stores!!

After some small buys (we didn't want to spend so much on the 1st day, althou we did went back a few days later =D), its time to check in to our apartment.

Since it was a budget trip and there are 4 of us travelling, we decided to stay in Kangaroo Point Holiday Apartment (http://www.kangaroopoint.com).

It was not too bad, considering it cost only approx S$ 200 per night. The apartment consists of 2 bedrooms, a small Kitchen and one bathroom (with bathtub). It'll rate it 3.5/5 for a mid-budget stay in Brisbane..

We went to Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary on the 2nd day. A must if you're big fan of Koala! You can take photos with them! They have a extremely strong eucalyptus smell but definitely adorable! I was really happy and satisfied with the photo taking! After they took the photo for you, you will need wait for awhile before collecting your photo at the store beside the photo taking area. Since I love animals and there’s no Koala hugging session in Singapore, it’s a very good souvenir to bring home. I’ve forgotten the price, but I remember it’s not too steep.

Tips:

- Bring along your student card, the entrance fee will be cheaper*

We roam around the sanctuary after the koala hugs and came across the lorikeets feeding.. Be sure to bring along wet tissue since all 3 of my friends brought home the “souvenirs” the lorikeets gave.. It’s best not to walk below a tummy satisfied lorikeets..

We proceeded to watched the dog show (amazed at how smart the dogs are), got chased by sheeps, and saw the most adorable puppy at their small animal farm..

Basically, since it’s a Koala Sanctuary, so we didn’t expect it to be as big as a Zoo.. After a few hours, we left and continue our journey to St John's Cathedral.

We had a hard time locating St John's Cathedral, but in the end, we managed to find it and it was very much worth the trip. Once you stepped in, the peace you get is just priceless.. Of course, most Churches do… We lit some candles, said some prayers and carried on with our trip..

During the night, we visited Conrad Treasury Casino, it was a little messy, but still managed to survive the crowd and earn some quick bucks.. The big problem was the parking. We didn't want to park in the carpark as the fees was freaking ex, so we went around searching for street side parking, took a bit of time and gamble, found a space but still ended up walking a fairly long distance..

The following day, we had a quick visit to the Queensland Museum (entry is free, but there is entry charges for the Sciencentre and some special events and exhibitions) Due to the same reason mentioned above regarding parking, we parked our car along the street side near the museum and walk our way there. http://www.qm.qld.gov.au (Can pay a visit if you have some spare time)

To lighten the mood, I’ll be posting a short post..

My fav Asia country is… *drumroll*… Korea!! I have some plans to study there as well in the near future.
Since I will be gg Korea this coming Feb and I have a lovable BF there, I guess I should share some helpful info on the country. Before posting on the actual posts, just share with you some pics showing the current weather there.. Heard its freezing!!

Dachau Concentration Camp Memorial Site Tour (Munich, Germany)

I’ve always been fascinated by war history and therefore once I saw the tour brochure, I decided that I have to join the tour. As expected, I did not regret any single minute of the trip (except that I should have worn much warmer clothing – but that’s a another story) .

We gathered early morning at Munich Central Station and set off via train to Dachau Station, when we arrive at Dachau Station, we change to a bus and finally arrived at our destination.

I went during the winter, and I’m not sure if it was me or the temperature had just dropped another 5 degree, it was absolutely freezing cold. Before we went in the front gate, outside the camp, the guide told us that it is in this kind of weather, the prisoners were made to stand for long period of hours with just what they were wearing (of course, there are no whatsoever animal fur, wool jackets, etc).

The prisoners are given the perception that only by working, you will have a chance to be free. That of course, is a complete lie.

Our tour begins and we were led to a building where you will find pictures, stories and information about Hilter, the camp’s purpose, the experiments that they conduct on humans and ways in which the prisoners are tortured.

We were then brought to the “bunks” where the prisoners slept, the beds look really uncomfortable and if I remembered clearly, a room was filled with people 3 times its capacity. No heater during the winter, no air-conditioner during the summer, no nothing.

Before we were taken to another part of the camp, we were told not to eat or drink and at all times give the utmost respect. It was told that the area we will be entering was the area where all dead bodies are sent for cremation as well as where execution takes place. The prisoners at the main area was not allowed to enter, however, when they see the smoke that came from the burning, all knew exactly what was happening.

To be honest, I was a little terrified. To see the exact spot where thousands died and the furnace that was used to cremate countless bodies was a little disturbing. I remember a room where there are shower nozzle on the ceiling, the prisoners are "tricked" to being rewarded a revitalising shower but instead toxic gas were "rewarded". To no surpise, I did not stay long in the room, to be exact, I did not stop but just walk past the room swiftly.

By the time the tour ended for that area, I was nearly frozen, I remembered just wanting to go back to the main camp building and sit on the “heater seats”. My wish did came true and we were brought back to watch a documentary which I’ve totally forgotten about it.

The "jail" for people regarded as "highly dangerous"

The tour ended with a visit to another building with “jail-like” structure where people who are regarded as "highly dangerous" are placed here. We saw the cell where a famous assassinator was jailed, apparently, he nearly succeeded bombing Hilter.

All in all, it was definitely a freezing but eye opening experience.. If u guys ever visit Munich, be sure to spare some time to join the Dachau Concentration Camp tour.

Getting to Tioman

Before the Brisbane upload, just wanna share the below travel tips to Tioman from Singapore!!

1. The most cost effective but tedious way
--------------------------------

Step 1: From Singapore to JB (Larkin Terminal)
Take bus from Queen Street Bus Terminal (nearest MRT Station – Bugis)

- SBS 170
- Causeway Link 2 (CW2)
- Singapore – Johor Express (SJE)

You can purchase the ticket for CW2 and SJE from the ticket booth located at the Terminal. Do not throw the ticket away till you reached Larkin Terminal.

Once you reach Woodlands Checkpoint, you will alight, go through custom and board the bus again (do not need to board the same bus, you can wait for the next arriving bus).

The same applies when you arrive at Johor Bahru Checkpoint.

Note: You can take the SBS 170 to Larkin Terminal from Johor Bahru Checkpoint even if you did not take SBS 170 earlier. (You will need to pay additional nominal bus fee)

Journey Time: ~1.5 hr journey (smooth traffic)

Step 2: From JB (Larkin Terminal to Mersing)
When you arrive at Larkin Terminal, you will be able to see the stretch of ticketing counters and “salesman” standing in front of the counters. You can approach anyone and ask them where to purchase ticket to Mersing.

There are 2 counters that offer bus service to Mersing.

- S&S Express (8.30am)
- Causeway Link (11.30am)

Note: The two timing stated above is the only timing you can take (or any timing before 12 noon). In the event where the bus is fully booked or you’ve missed the bus, please do not book the afternoon timing as you will not have time to catch the last ferry to Tioman at 4.30pm

*In the event where you are unable to take the bus to Mersing from JB, please book the earliest bus to Kota Tinggi. There are many counters that provide bus services to Kota Tinggi.

From Kota Tinggi, take Omnibus 103 from the Terminal to Mersing.

Journey Time:
~ 2.5 hr (From JB to Mersing)
~ 3.5 hr (From JB to Kota Tinggi to Mersing)

Step 3
From Mersing, purchase the ferry ticket to Tioman from Blue Water Express which is located just beside the Bus Terminal.

Instructions will be given by the ferry company to get to the jetty.

Journey Time: ~ 2 – 2.5 hr (depending on the where your resort is located)

Hong Kong Trip

Early morning, we check out of Casa Real hotel, took the shuttle bus to Macau Ferry Terminal to continue our journey to HK! Ard HKD 140+ for one way ferry which is ard SGD 35+... BTW, our two night hotel stay was approx SGD 160 (cheap as the stay was during wkday, the rate for wkend was like SGD 120++ for 1 night) Some pics of the ferry we took.

We reach HK after about 1 hr! We booked our room in Bishop Lei International, the hotel mentioned on their website that there is shuttle bus service from Central MTR or alternatively a short walk up the mid-level escalator will reach their hotel and etc etc. In the end, LOST!! Don’t trust the signs!! We took a cab after strolling around central for about 1hr+ with our luggage!!

The cab was cheap since the hotel was near Central MTR and we found the location of the shuttle bus pickup in the end, but it was impossible to find if you did not ask the hotel staff. So.. If any1 do stay in Bishop Lei one day, please take a cab.. It won’t cost much from the Central MTR Station.

Thankfully, they upgraded our room to a harbourview room for no reason!! =)
The pics did not show the small living room and bathroom, so it is not as small as it seems.. Overall, I'll rate it 3.5/5 for HK standard (the bathroom is alittle too small.., but the view was amazing)

We went to Temple Street Night Market and NOTHING!! Okay, maybe for us. All the stores are selling the same items. We took about 15 mins to walk up and walk down and in the end bought my items all from the SASA outlet store. We are so exhausted from all the travelling and walking that we bought our dinner and some supper and went back to the hotel to rest.

Next morning, we went Stanley market by bus, it was a nice ride with views to look at, not spectacular, but not boring to say the least. The place is quite a good shopping spot and the cooling weather helps since it something like Singapore’s Pasar Malam combined Chinatown stores.

After which we took the bus back and went back Central to take a walk, travelled across to Causeway Bay by MTR and went to Star Ferry Pier. It was windy and I was freezing, but the view was nice. Some pics

We went Causeway Bay to walk, famous for some fashion wear, but in the end, nothing to buy! Mayb we are just too picky. Went for dinner at Pak Loh Chiu Chow Restaurant, recommended by Lonely Planet book, we thought we can get some tim sum there, in the end, BIG disappointment!!!

No tim sum and the food was so EX, we ordered fried rice and some porridge, one of the supervisor came, looked at us and say in mandarn: “one eating porridge and one eating fried rice for dinner, enough already right?”, it doesn’t help when the rest keep looking at us and laughing to one another. Disaster. Spoilt my appetite BIG time and the cost for the above was SGD 30+!! What the $%@&^%$.. Furthermore, cause the loving couple (us) to have some slight argument. BOYCOTT BIG TIME!!

*side note* the point i am putting across is we were sort of "looked down", which i feel was partly due to what we wore there.. Hip hop and fancy restaurant don't gel apparently.. Anyway, moving on...

That night was Chelsea vs Man Utd match, we thot our hotel provides the channel but to our dismay, on air was some other football league, but Chelsea won, so maybe not watching is better.

I hope to go back again one day since I missed quite a lot of places, it doesn’t help when you walk and travel so much the prev few days and your partner fell sick. Will go back again 1 day!

*Tips*: If u plan to travel much, purchasing the Octopus Card (like EZ-link in Singapore) is a wise choice, furthermore, any remaining value in the card is returned to you after your visit in HK! (http://www.octopus.com.hk/home/en/index.html)

Trip to Macau - Part 2

After a long night sleep, our trip for Day 2 begins.

Before the trip, extensive research was done on the transport to the central; however, during dinner last night, we realize that we are able to walk to the central. From Casa Real to Central takes about 30 mins, provided you are not lost. (thank goodness I still remember the way from prev trip).

We went to the famous Sao Paulo Cathedral which is a must go when you are in Macau . On the way to Sao Paulo Cathedral, you will cross a stretch of shops selling barbeque pork which btw cannot be compared to Singapore 's Mei Zhen Xiang or any other brand and shops that sell the famous Ginger candy and almond cookies etc.

Generous sampling size are given along the way, make sure you keep some empty stomach =), the biscuit stores are great place to buy some back home while the barbeque pork store are known to be quite pricey. Unless you are a huge fan of their barbeque pork, I would not recommend buying from there.

Our next destination is Penha Church. Btw the trip to Penha Church drained the %$#&@#$ energy and brain cell out of me. We were given wrong direction and ended up walking much much more than we had and not forgetting the steep road up the hill to get to the church.

Nevertheless, we managed to drag ourselves up and enjoy the view from the top of the small hill. If only the weather would have been alittle clearer, the view would have been stunning.

Something interesting that we spotted was just outside the church, there is someone selling Buddhist items, lucky charms etc. Not exactly the best location I guess?

We hiked back down and went strolling around Macau Central again, grabbed some munchies on the way which was delicious and slowly make our way to Wynn and MGM casino.

Lose $$. Not Happy. We went for dinner after the long day and went back to rest. The following day, we are travelling to Hong Kong .

Trip to Macau..

I've been to Macau twice, once with my Uncle and Auntie and the second with my guy.

The difference is the first trip was more "gambling focused" and the second was alittle more "sightseesing focused". Let focus on the second trip since the first trip was basically just.. gambling..

We arrived in Macau via Tiger Airways, I told myself after the 4-hr plus flight to Taipei via Jetstar that I would never take another budget airline for such "long"distance flight.. Anyway, I gave it due to budget constraint and the limited flights going to Macau..

The hotel that we stayed in was Casa Real Hotel, location was alright and overall it was value for $$..

There are few islands within Macau, the two main island that people visit should be Macau Peninsula and Taipa.. The hotel was located in Macau Peninsula whereas the airport was located in or just outside Taipa and to travel to our hotel, we need to pass Taipa..

Anyway, we decided to spend the morning in Taipa and check in to the hotel in the afternoon..

Qns 1) What do we do with our luggages??

Tip: Venetian is located in Taipa, in case you are not aware, Venetian is the replica of the original Venetian Hotel in Las Vegas.. It is definitely a must see "attraction"spot in Macau.. Anyway to continue, you can leave your luggage at the baggage service area and start your tour!! Note: if the staff ask which room you are staying, you can just let them know that you are visiting the Casino..

1. First Stop: The Venetian

2. Taipa Village: Taipa Village is just walking distance from The Venetian.. Therefore, you don't have waste $$ on cab, some cab drivers will take the chance to "squeeze" more $$ by taking longer route or come up with some "imaginary" reason to hike up the fare.. (speaking from experience.. T.T..) You can ask the helpful staff from The Venetian, they will direct you..

Wanted to visit the Taipa Museum, which brings me to the next point, some days are free to visit the Museum, while some days you have to pay a very small nominal fee, however please note that they do not change.. Therefore, you have to bring exact change there.. In the end, we did not enter since we are short of change...

Anyway, travel down the Taipa Village and visited a pork chop bun stall (the pic above) that was supposedly famous.. The pork chop bun was nice!! Huge.. After lunch, we went back Venetian hotel and visited the Manchester United store!! Inside the store, there is a MU tour where you are able to play some soccer ball games, read the history of MU, see the replica of the player's room, etc..

*solely for Man Utd fans*

After the tour, we went to check in at our hotel using Venetian's shuttle bus (the blue buses from the pic on the top).. Shuttle bus are very common in Macau, provided by the various hotels.. They normally travel to and fro from their hotel to the ferry terminal... Thus travelling from Taipa to Macau Peninsula is convenient and F.O.C!!

After playing "hide and seek" with our hotel, to our dismay, we are not able to check in due to some problems !! But they did compensate us by upgrading us to a suite!! After looking at the room, we are TOTALLY fine with the delay, the only downside was we are staying for only two nights and we are leaving for Hong Kong.. We shld have stayed for 1 week or something..

During the delay of our hotel room, we went to Fisherman Wharf which was near to our hotel.. A few minutes away by walking.. Nth much, I suppose it was still developing.. We just stroll around and went back to our hotel to rest..

We came out for dinner and dinner was delicious!! Stroll around again to digest the very large amount of food and went back for a night rest.. Some pictures that we took... Enjoy!!

Before Tioman Trip

Before blogging on previous hotel experiences, just wanna share my upcoming trip to Tioman Island!! After the trip, will be posting some pictures, information etc.

I've research online and decided to go for the cheapest method to get to Tioman.
I am travelling on 7-9 August (SG National Day).. Ya.. I know.. Bad timing..

Budget Stay: Panuba Inn (RM 100 per day) - inclusive of the RM20 surcharge on wkend and public holiday..

Transport:

1. I will be taking SBS 170, CW2 or Singapore-Johor Express at Queen St. to Johor Bahru Larkin Terminal.

3. Mersing - a speedboat down Tioman!! WooHoo.. about RM35 for one trip and RM5 for some wildlife conservation fee

The above is the cheapest way to get to Tioman from Singapore. W/o the boat tix, I reckon it will cost about less than S$10!!
