Have you read The Journal Enterprise lately? You really should.

Beginning with the expanded news coverage and on through the community/county culture pictures that are worth at least a thousand words, down to the poignant life reminders in The JE's news editor Matt Hughes Staff Stuff column, this small town-America newspaper may well be on it's way to winning a Pulitzer Prize.

This week's December 2014 Christmas edition is chock full of Christmas events from around the county, along with its colorful, creative "Wishes for the Christmas Season" advertisements that ring true the new marketing rep Todd P'Poole's marketing savvy.

A glimpse of things to come for The JE are the mentioned Relish and American Profile supplements, adding more reasons to subscribe to its paper edition and bringing back excitement of days gone by, a desire to rush out to the stands to get the first copy, hot off the press.

Readers will also find great local sports coverage with close-up action shots and a dedicated "Athlete of the Week" spotlight. Charlie Hust having more time to focus on his sports coverage talent is evidence the new ownership by The Kentucky New Era was a great move for The JE with it's foundation dating back to 1899 starting as The Dixon Journal.

My favorite highlight of the week was at the end of the Staff Stuff column. Hughes says, "My Christmas wish for all of you (and myself) is that we can slow down this holiday season! Spend some time with the people who matter most to us and don't worry about the clock."

Love Story Began Over Lunch

Those that know me well know I am truly a lover of a good romance book or movie. I have read or watched such great love stories like Gone with the Wind and The Notebook so many times I can pretty well quote the pages or the script. However, something that is nearer and dearer to my heart, yes even more so than the characters Scarlett and Rhett and Noah and Allie, is when the love story is about two people you actually know, and are family. Recently, we were blessed to hear the love story of Terry’s parents Earl and Susie Brown.

It all began with a boxed lunch auction at Dixon Elementary School. When farmer boy from Lisman heard that the lunch prepared by Susie Mooney was up next he began reaching into his pockets for money. Susie’s boxed lunch was a popular one so Earl Brown paid a whole entire five dollars( he swears every penny he had to his name) to own it. For five dollars, Earl got the boxed lunch made up of a potted meat sandwich, a bag of chips, a sweet treat, and an apple. This apple would be the only thing the nervous teenage boy could actually eat, as he also got to sit with Susie after his purchase. Everyone that knows and loves this couple knows he must have been really nervous.

Not only is Susie a great baker of sweets , but also Earl has always had a huge sweet tooth. He must have had major butterflies in his stomach to pass up one of Susie’s delicious treats. After Earl finished the apple, he asked if he could take then fifteen year old Susie home. Not only did she agree, but Earl also had to take her little brother home as well as Susie. After attending countless ball games and watching movies at the local drive-ins, this couple was engaged and later wed a year after that boxed lunch purchase on January 24,1964.

After surviving six house moves, purchasing ten cars and six trucks, raising two sons, feeding countless pet dogs as well strays and enjoying four grandchildren, this couple has stayed together through it all for fifty years.

Something to celebrate for sure…. Especially treasured in today’s world. But it took a bit of convincing Earl by sons Terry and Craig to have this golden celebration, so time became a factor.

Could a 50th wedding reception be planned, decorated, and enjoyed in just three short weeks?

I am happy and pleased to say thanks to some wonderful reception resources (many of them right here in Webster County) Earl and Susie Brown’s reception was beautiful and will always be a day not only they will remember but also their family and friends.

Webster County Cross Country Wins Top Honors at Regional Meet; Whitsell Wins Regional Crown

The Webster County cross country teams won top honors in the Kentucky High School Athletics Association (KHSAA) state cross country championships for the Class 2A Region 1 meet held at Marshall County High School in Benton, Kentucky this past Saturday.

The boys’ squad, with a score of 22 points, nearly tripled Calloway’s score for the regional championship win, while the girls’ squad finished only three points behind Fort Campbell, to win second place, qualifying both teams to compete in the state meet next week in Lexington.

Webster County’s top five runners placed in the top ten of the regional 5,000 meter race.

Webster County senior Iszack Whitsell finished in first place, winning the boys’ regional crown with a comfortable time of 16:55.70, nearly a minute ahead of second place runner Chase Oxford of Union County. However, Union County did not have a full team, disqualifying Oxford for second place.

For the boys’ squad, Mitchell Shelton moved into second place winning runner with a time of 18:03.80. Webster County runners Ronin Periard earned third place, Trevor Cole, sixth place and Preston Glazebrook, tenth place.

For the girls’ squad, Ali Cherry was Webster’s number four runner, taking fourth place at 21:43.10. Hadley Mitchell placed fifth at 21:51.20, with Kaile Branson clocking in at 22:03.70 for seventh place.

Thank you Webster County: A Guest Post by, The Messenger's Sports Reporter, Mike Stunson

For a fresh-out-of-college 22-year-old, arriving in the Hopkins County area in August 2011 was a bit of an adjustment.

I didn't know a soul and was honestly nervous about what was in store for me.

But the people of Webster County, whether it be the students, coaches, or parents, have helped make this nearly two-year experience so worthwhile.

As most of you know, I am borderline-obsessed with Twitter — that's the best way for me to get my name out there.

I've been on Twitter for over four years, but it wasn't until fall 2012 where I think people in the area began to notice. That's when my followers came in flurries, with Webster County people always being the ones to communicate with me more, despite knowing that as a Messenger reporter my allegiances have to fall with Madisonville-North Hopkins and Hopkins County Central before Webster.

Some of the most interesting and warm-hearted people I've come across in my two years here have been from Webster, such as 2012 Trojan grad Jacob Scott, who to this day has been my favorite student-athlete to cover.

Others that come to mind are Dan Boswell and Kolbi Edens.

And the connections I've built with coaches in the past two years, most especially with the Lady Trojan basketball team, have been so helpful for me.

I never expected my name to be chanted during a basketball game by a student section, but that's what happened last winter at a Trojan game.

In a way, I feel like a part of this big Webster County family, and it's always been a great feeling for me.
I always wanted to be a journalist, dating back do to my middle-school days when I realized I probably wasn't going to be a professional basketball player.

And now, as people like to tell me all the time, I'm apparently a celebrity in these parts. I never asked for that, as I'm just trying to do my best to provide high-school sports coverage. I feel honored that the people in Hopkins and Webster counties speak so highly of me.

I don't know what the future has in store for me. I'd be lying if I said I want to stay in this area permanently. But no matter where I'll go, I'll always be checking up on how all the student-athletes from the area are doing. Some are destined for big things in the sports world, while others are going to make it big in their respective professions.

I can honestly say that communicating with people from across the area and learning their stories has helped shape me to become the man I am today. There are so many amazing people in Webster County, and a lot have been inspirations for me.

More than anything, this post is a thank you to the people in Webster. You all have made this job so much more enjoyable for me, and I am extremely grateful.

Editor's note: I became acquainted with Mike through Twitter in the winter of 2012, as I was seeking to follow Webster County students, coaches, teachers, parents, etc. Mike has impressed me with his professionalism and excellent reporting/coverage of sports. I have learned a lot about engaging on Twitter from Mike, and I've been entertained by many of his random tweets that so timely break the routine of life. Whatever Mike Stunson does with the rest of his career will be awesome. He has definitely made an indelible impression on Webster County that will long be remembered.

The Clay Zephyr

To some, it was probably just another gas station. To me, it was a part of my life, though it had been for only six or seven years. The Clay Zephyr opened in 1970 on South Main Street, one block from the blinking red light of the four-way stop. My Grandfather, Raymond Turner, had been hired to manage it.

For 20 years, it was a big part of his life and ours. He would be up each morning at 5 a.m. to open the station and would be back at 9 p.m. that night to close the station. He never took a vacation of more than a day or two during those years. He lived and breathed the Clay Zephyr.

When the Clay Zephyr opened, gas was 32 cents a gallon. During the gas wars of the 1970s, gas prices would fall to only 25 cents per gallon.

My mother, Cindy, remembers pumping gas at the Zephyr when she was only eight years old. By the age of 12, she would run the station by herself, at times. She wasn’t the only one either. Her older brother, Dunie; sister, Lori; and younger brothers, Terry and Robert; also worked there. Just about every teen boy in town had their first job there.

The station consisted of two islands with two pumps on each island. One island was self-service and the other was full service. This was back in a time when gas station attendants would come out and pump your gas, clean your windshield, and check your oil. The days before places like the Seven Eleven stores. The only drinks sold there were in the vending machines outside, and the only food items sold were snacks like prepackaged chips and peanut butter and crackers.

There was no counter and no cash register. The attendants carried a roll of money in their pockets to make change. No separate men and women’s restrooms were available, and there was no air conditioning. All that was inside the building was my grandfather’s desk, a restroom inside and one outside (though, I don’t remember the one outside ever actually working) and a fan. It was an old-fashioned corner gas station.

Driving was about the only fun thing to do on Friday nights and the Zephyr was part of the main drag. I’ve heard that people would drive from there to the Pantry (which also no longer exists) and back again; over and over again.

Reading some comments on Facebook on a picture I posted of my grandfather, many people have some great memories of it as well. One person commented that they would have donuts there while waiting for the school bus. Others have said how they would stop there just to hang out and chat with him.

Unfortunately, due to circumstances beyond his control, my grandfather lost the Zephyr in 1991. Another person was brought in to run it. It stayed open for a few more years, but no one else could keep it alive. It was eventually sold, and a store was opened up in it, which also didn’t last long.

Sometime later, someone set up a taco stand on the property and set up picnic tables where the vending machines and ice used to be. Every time I’d see the building it just looked worse and worse. It was like watching a member of my family die.

I’ve had a few dreams where I’d buy it, fix it up, and reopen it. Now it’s no longer there. When I learned that it had been torn down, I felt like crying. Now if I ever go by that spot when I’m visiting Webster County, I think, “It just doesn’t look right.” As they say, time marches on. But sometimes, I would really enjoy it if time could just stop for a little bit.

Hunter Nichols Hits First Webster Home Run Since 2011 in Win Over Hopkinsville

Pitching six innings in a winning game is a great experience, but when you also have an opportunity to batter up and hit a home run like Hunter Nichols did, well that's even more awesome, especially since it's the first home run for your school team in two years.

After a brief five-day vacation to Texas, New Mexico and Arizona, where he watched the St.Louis Cardinals play against Arizona, sportswriter Mike Stunson's first sports story getting back in the work groove is sure to be about a great Webster game.

Rallying to help him make it to the game, Twitter users proved that the social media platform is an awesome tool to aid others when it's needed.

The Little Girl Who Never Sees Big Obstacles

Lydia Kay Wirth is a three-year old who knows how to party. Just take a look at the photo below. She and her dad, Josh Wirth, are up to their elbows in shaving cream for some Easter egg coloring fun!

Lydia is the winner of our Ready for Easter contest, receiving the most 'likes' with her favorite way to celebrate Easter photo. Way to go Lydia! TWCKY hopes you will enjoy your $15 Walmart gift card a lot.

Lydia's mom, Chelsey Zaretzke Wirth, (formerly of Providence) shared with me - "She is the happiest girl I know. She can bring a smile to your face. She loves everybody and judges no one."

About Lydia

Born as a seemingly healthy baby, Lydia began to show signs at five months old that she was not developing at an age appropriate rate. Naturally concerned, her parents consulted her pediatrician. At that time, the doctor saw nothing that caused him concern.

One month later, Lydia's parents came back to the physician, determined that some tests be administered to find an explanation for her inability to perform age-appropriate tasks. The doctor ordered an MRI scan.

The test results showed that Lydia had hydrocephalus, a buildup of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain, causing swelling and pressure. This would begin to explain the impairments of brain function and lack of development they'd seen in Lydia.

Because the disorder is potentially fatal, Lydia's parents immediately scheduled appointments at Kosair's Children's Hospital in Louisville for the following day. There she would see a team of genetic physicians.

A new diagnosis with an enduring message

Following evaluation, the doctors at Kosair's diagnosed Lydia with Rubinstein Taybi Syndrome, a rare genetic disorder that affects many organs of the body. Doctors reassured Lydia's mom and dad that nothing done by either parent had caused the syndrome, but no amount of reassurance could have bolstered them for the frightening news they heard next.

"Lydia will never walk or talk. You will have to take care of Lydia for the rest of your lives."

Research spurs second opinion, a more fitting diagnosis

Lydia began therapy and her mom began to dig deeper, to find out all she could about Rubinstein Taybi . She'd not been convinced that the latest diagnosis was correct. The gut feeling that wouldn't seem to change finally helped her realize that it was time for a second opinion.

It had been a year since the first diagnosis. The doctor who saw Lydia this time concluded that she had cerebral palsy, most likely caused from her previous hydrocephalus, brain fluid buildup. Her mom agreed that her functional abilities most closely resembled the signs and symptoms associated with CP.

Lydia is on her way, achieving with her abilities. She feeds herself with her fingers and can use utensils with assistance. She sits, crawls and can walk with assistance, and she can speak and sign little words.

Attending preschool is something Lydia loves. No one has to persuade her that it's time for school. And she's part of the regular classroom there. She just gets some extra help with physical, speech and occupational therapy.

She's even added a new adventure of physical and speech therapy at Theraplay in Madisonville to boost her skills, too.

At home, it's time for Mickey Mouse Clubhouse, Elmo and fun with mom and dad, but it's never time to quit (except when you simply must go to sleep of course). And there must always be room in a girl's schedule for hugs and kisses.

Her mom and dad feel especially blessed to have her. They will tell you that even the brief journey they've come with Lydia thus far has taught them so much about the richness of life. She's a little girl who doesn't give up, her mom says, "and it's only the beginning!"

Eggstra Easter Fun Focuses on Resurrection at Sebree First Baptist

-- A pleasant Saturday afternoon brought out many parents and grandparents with infants, toddlers, preschoolers and elementary age students to First Baptist Church in Sebree. They came for an eggceptional hunt of brightly-colored eggs and received much more.

Dawn Whitsell directed everyone on details of the hunt, but before she let the anxious youngsters get started for the event, she shared what the celebrated day of Easter is all about:

"The meaning of Easter is the celebration of the resurrection.
It is the reason that we celebrate. Jesus arose from the tomb and he is alive," she emphasized, posing with a firm stance while attempting to make direct eye contact with
as many children as possible.

The amount of time she spoke was brief, but her words and posture conveyed a strong message, which ended with a prayer of thankfulness.

Instructed on groupings and areas to search in, then given the word from leaders that it was time to begin, kids took to the grass in three separate areas to look for treasures, including a golden egg that entitled the finder to a special prize.

In just moments, all of the eggs were in happy children's baskets.

Afterwards, adults and children emptied most of the plastic eggs to leave them useable for a future hunt. Even though Ms.Whitsell had told them earlier that even if they decided to take them home, that was fine, too.

Children who found the 'golden egg' claimed their special prizes, and folks chatted and organized their treasures. Pastor Bob Hardison was on hand to talk with adults and children and enjoy watching the hunt.

The event had been a memorable one for me. I took my 2-year old granddaughter along, and her grandpa joined in as well. For children ages 0-2 years, the hunt was held in an enclosed area for the safety
of the children, and there was a toddler play set to enjoy after the goodies were gathered, which included a small stuffed bunny for each child.

While at the hunt, I had the opportunity to speak with Dr. Hardison, the pastor - to ask him a few questions about the church. He shared that the church was established in 1891. He'd been the pastor there for 33 years, and had been with the church through many changes and events, such as its 100th anniversary in 1991, as well as developments, including a building addition in 2002.

His eyes seemed to sparkle a bit, as he shared with me how delighted he was that the addition was paid off in nine years. The ninth year had been in 2011 - framed photos of the addition's groundbreaking and note burning day were on the foyer wall as a remembrance.

Dr. Hardison had also enjoyed sharing with me, over the phone recently, about the bicycle ministry. The church serves as an overnight stay hostel for cyclists along the TransAmerica Bicycle Trail.

Annually, about 250 cyclists come to the accommodation, which provides amenities such as showers, washer/dryer and a recreation facility. To learn more about the ministry and the church, see http://sebreefirstbaptist.com/Bicycle_Ministry.html.

New Song Release - Blue on Grass - Inspired by WC Native’s Rural Kentucky Lifestyle

Rachel Harvey Hill

-- When it comes to knowing what it’s like to miss a hometown and to appreciate the rural Kentucky lifestyle, Rachel Harvey Hill has gained a lot of experience. Now living in Seoul, South Korea, far from her Wheatcroft, Kentucky, roots, Rachel allows a longing for home to inspire her words for songs.

Inspired by music as a child

Rachel has had an interest in music for as long as she can remember. She says her childhood was filled with people and experiences that allowed her to develop her natural talent and skills. Her mother was the first to leave an impression, always singing to her. Rachel loved listening to her, as well as her two sisters. The three women sang together as a trio.

Ms. Joyce Price also played a big role in Rachel’s love of music. Ms. Price instructed Rachel in music, both at Clay Elementary School and at Clay First Baptist Church, where she gave Rachel piano and voice lessons.

Rachel and her mother weren’t the only family members with musical talent either. Her brother, Tim Harvey, began playing music by ear at age six. Today, Tim is an amazing gifted musician, singer, writer and recording engineer and makes the demos of the songs she writes. He is also an associate pastor/church worship leader in Cunningham, Kentucky. Rachel says Tim has taught her a lot about music.

Singing, songwriting and traveling

During high school and college, Rachel sang with and wrote some of the songs recorded in Nashville for a group called Crossroads, a Southern Gospel quartet. She says it was in this timeframe that she combined her love for music and poetry to form songs.

Rachel and her husband, Ryan, who is in the Air Force, have lived in places that include North Carolina, Arizona, and Kansas along with their current location in Seoul.

I asked Rachel how living in different places has affected her songwriting. She responded -

“I’ve met amazing musicians in each place we have lived that have challenged me and helped me develop as a musician and writer.”

Songs born out of losses

In 2005, Rachel lost her son Raphael in death, then in 2010, she lost another son, Rhett. Both sons died due to a rare genetic condition known as Zellweger syndrome. Rachel shared with me about the experiences.

“During my time of grief songwriting was my gateway to cry out to God with my hurts, questions, fears, and anger. As I would write, it seemed he met me there and answered my cries. I put some of the songs I wrote after Raphael passed away into an album called, ‘The Rafi Album.’

I hoped that it would bring comfort to grieving parents. I can’t even begin to explain the peace I found listening to myself sing about my own grief when my son, Rhett later died. Maybe sometimes being able to write songs is God’s way of communicating with me, comforting me and showing me love.”

Moving forward with expectation

Rachel now has a daughter. Having written around 200 songs, her future goals, in addition to being a wife and mother, are to continue writing songs. She says, “I’m going to write no matter what. Songs just come out of me.” Her hopes are to see some of her songs recorded by a major artist. She’d also like to see them used in films or television.

Lake Reel-em-in: Memories of a WC Recreational Area Not Forgotten

For a lot of folks that were youngsters or teens back in the 50s and 60s, you’d have found no better public place in or near Webster County to take a fun dip in the water than at Lake Reel-em-in recreational area in Dixon, Kentucky. Some say that the Sturgis Pool (formerly in Union County) and Reel-em-in’s camping, fishing and swimming spot were two of the best places for a kid to enjoy jumping off the diving board. Even better yet, was going to the snack shop for a coke and a candy bar, which you could have gotten for a quarter or less… “Those were ‘good times.’”

Known by many as Walker Lake

The 65-acre body of water is designated as Walker Lake, a reservoir in the Kentucky Geological Survey that is within the Green/Tradewater River Basin in Kentucky (see http://kgs.uky.edu/kgsweb/olops/pub/kgs/mc189_12.pdf). The lake was named after Bill Walker of Henderson, who was at one time the property’s owner.

Today, Walker Lake is part of the property owned by Dixon area resident Frank Boggess along with a beautiful home there. A boat dock remains, though, no diving board. A small fishing boat rests along its shore. On the hill, there are picnic tables and a grill, most likely used for private gatherings.

Members of the Facebook group ‘If you grew up in Webster County, Ky, you remember…’ have memories of cabins there, jumping from the diving board, fishing, a playground and family picnics, as well as the delightful snack shop or store as it was often called it, too.

The Facebook group members recall when Victor and Virgil Puckett ran the place, and when Terry Franklin was a lifeguard there.

One of my most vivid memories is from a trip there with my grandmother, Bessie Owen Gardner.

My brothers were swimming, and I was playing in the sand. Grandma, as we called her, was sitting on a bench. In those days, women wore dresses almost everywhere. Grandma had one on that day, and a full flower design apron over top.

Everyone seemed to be enjoying the afternoon. Warm day it was… made most every living creature want at least a splashing of the lake water. Guess that’s why you could expect what happened next, but none of us were prepared for it.

There we were, all having fun when we heard a loud ScReaM, “Oh, my God, it’s a SNAKE!!! HELP Me!!”

Next thing we knew, grandma had taken off running toward that snack shop hollerin', “It’s in my skirt…It’s in my skirt.” Of course, it didn’t take long for that snake to get out of her dress, or skirt as she was referring to it at the time.

Weren’t we kids awful for laughing at her frightening moment?

She fared well, though. Other than a case of shaken nerves, she’d not been harmed, no bites that is to say.

A Memorial

While performing research for this article, I felt especially grateful that my grandma's scary experience at the lake was no comparison to that of Beverly Drury's, age 19, of Utica, Kentucky, who had drown in the lake in 1952. I’d like to dedicate this article in her memory.

All of us who had the privilege to enjoy Lake Reel-em-in and collect fond memories are indeed blessed.

WC Residents Blasted With Color in Owensboro 5K Run: Support Disability Awareness

Owensboro, Kentucky -- English Park is where 4,223 energized runners gathered Saturday morning, March 23, for the ColorBlast 5K run. Andy and Sarah Glazebrook's family, including daughter Colleen and son Preston (members of the WC track team), were a part of the dedicated group that set out in some nippy weather to run in support of a great cause, disability awareness.

Beginning the event with white shirts, runners were
blasted with colored powder during and at the end of the race.

Hosts for the event included WHAS Crusade for Children, Puzzle Pieces non-profit day care center, Two Rivers Buddy Ball non-profit sports league for children with disabilities and Wendell Foster's Campus for Disabilities.

Additional hosts were Green River Area Down Syndrome Association, Dream Riders of Kentucky horseback riding organization for those with disabilities and Team Karlie, providing special jogging strollers for disabled participants to be a part of the run.

Three of the top five runners of the race were from Webster County: Iszaak Whitsell, first place, Trevor Cole, second place and Preston Glazebrook, fifth place.

Where in the World is the Pollen in Webster County?

With the official beginning of spring just a few days away, the pollen, which all of us wish would stay close to where it came from, may soon be in our noses and throats. Our local neighborhood pharmacies, such as Thrifty Drug Store in Providence, Clay Drug Store and Bell’s Drugs in Sebree, may find many Webster County citizens seeking out medications to help relieve their allergy symptoms.

I recall, as a young child, growing up in Webster County, drawing my own rendition of what pollination was all about, as I’m sure many of you remember doing as well. It wasn’t until I was in my teens that I sadly realized that the pollen getting moved about affected me miserably in the fall during ragweed season.

Springtime Allergens in Webster County

Typically, we think of what makes us sneeze or have trouble breathing outside as just about anything that that is blooming. However, according to pollenlibrary.com, the most significant allergens for Webster County in the spring come from trees.

Depending on how many trees you have in or near your environment that are one of the oak or hickory types listed in the significant allergen species group, you will have more or less exposure and symptoms than other people in your area.

And although most of us are ready for spring, the cooler temperatures have an affect on when the pollination period begins by prolonging it a bit. Thankfully, when pollination does happen, most of the pollen actually goes where it is intended, to fertilize other plants, but the part that doesn’t sure plays havoc with our sinuses and lungs for a while.

Making Plans to Plant Trees in Webster County?

In addition to considering the beauty of a tree and the maintenance it requires before purchasing and planting, it’s a good idea to think about the pollen it may produce. Grandpa may have been even smarter than you realized when he planted a large flowering dogwood tree in his front yard since it is known to be one of the flowering trees that cause less allergy problems.

And grandma may have had some remedies such as a neti pot, butterbur and spirulina or local raw honey that made life easier, too.

It can be interesting to find out things you didn't know, if for no other reason than to say you know it.

If you're looking for some Webster County trivia to share at party, a lunch meeting or maybe to occupy that inpatient person sitting next to you in the doctor's office, here are some snippets to add to your local history knowledge.

- You may know that Webster County is one of the majority of Kentucky counties that are dry (no alcohol sales permitted), but do you also know that Kentucky is one of the few states in the U.S. that its majority of counties have remained dry since prohibition lifted?

- You may know that Webster County's first settler is said to have likely been a veteran of the revolutionary war, William Jenkins. Jenkins constructed an inn that had stagecoach service.

Are you also aware that Meriwether Lewis is said to have stayed there and that Jenkins built two other firsts in Webster County, a gin for cotton and a frame house.

At 103, the man who had worked hard to make it a good place to live was still shown in historical sketches, as a resident in the county.

- You may know that in 2007 (last reported date of United States Census data found by TWCKY for this information type) there were over 900 businesses registered in Webster County. Did you also know the percentage breakdown of ownership given in that reporting?

Women owned twenty-seven percent of Webster County businesses in 2007. There were no Asian, Black, American Indian, Alaskan Native, Hispanic, and Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander owned businesses in 2007.

Webster County's Twitter History: Who's in the Tweet Pack?

Collections of memories, events, happenings, etc., are obtained through different venues. One way that this is happening, and seemingly covertly, in Webster County is through social media. Though many folks , both young and old, are on the Facebook social network, the demographics for Twitter users in Webster County is most likely not close to the worldwide average age, which is 39. Rather, it would probably be nearer 19. Only about six percent of those over 55 are said to use Twitter (http://blog.tweetsmarter.com).

Far Reaching Network That Can Easily Mushroom

A person's Twitter reach can grow from none to 100 or more in the span of an hour. Learning the Twitter lingo/slang may take a bit, especially from the teen perspective, but it's a great way to stay connected and stay in touch with what youth are like in 2013: how they feel about life, interact with each other and how you can connect on their level and value their take on the world. I've also found it particularly useful to grab some great snippets (tweets, which are 140 characters or less) from statewide organizations and receive updates as they happen from many sources.

Follow Where There Are Followers

As you can see from the image above, almost all of my entire WC Twitter group consists of sports related connections. This happened because I began following the Messenger's sports writer Mike Stunson. In one of his tweets during basketball season, Mike said that he had gained 600+ new followers since people had found out that he was tweeting about sports.

Lady Trojans Pull Out Fourth Quarter Comeback

Extending the team's season with a second tournament game that was a thriller for Lady Trojan history , the Webster girls recovered from a nine-point trail, at the end of the third quarter, to win the Second Region match up with a four-point lead. Thursday night's final score - Webster County, 48, Caldwell County, 44.

Game Day

Maddie Duncan tweeted earlier on Thursday, "Game day," and indeed it was a game to be remembered. Tipping off with Townsend, Edens, McNary, Papineau and Herrera, Webster got its first tie of the game, 6-6, into the first quarter. Caldwell then took the lead and the first quarter ended 13-8 in the Lady Tigers favor.

Going without a field goal for almost eight minutes, Webster came back briefly to trim the deficit at 21-15, but Caldwell again led at the end of the half with a score of 23-18. Herrera got foul number three in the third quarter and the Lady Tigers made baskets back-to-back to end the quarter in a 35-27 lead.

Fourth Quarter Shift

Trimming Caldwell's lead to six points, early on in the fourth quarter, Kolbi Edens scored her 11th game point. Webster then tied up the game a second time, 35-35, with two free throws.

Both teams went back-and-forth at the free-throw line. McKenzie Ames fouled out and a Caldwell team player was injured. Caldwell makes no field goals in the fourth quarter, but temporarily the Lady Tigers still hang on to the lead.

With 37 seconds left, Webster's girls came back for the fight with McNary's fastbreak basket and at four seconds left, one free throw in by Keeney.

The Gleaner's sportswriter, Kevin Patton, tweets, "Webster may pull this one out."

And the WC team did just that. Kristen Keeney drops in the last free throw, finishing off the game with a four-point WIN.

Does Webster County Have a U.S. Figure Skating Champion in Its History?

Roger Campbell, former U.S figure skater and ice dancer, had been a young man with big dreams of skating in the 1961 World Championships. He had skated with and been coached by some of the country’s finest ice skating professionals. Prior to earning the privilege to be a part of the 1961 U.S. Figure Skating team, Roger had won many American figure skating titles. Sadly, the life and skating career of this talented, 19-year old ice skater ended in tragedy.

Campbell's Roots

Campbell’s mother Ann had been one of the most supportive fans of his skating ambitions. Born in Sturgis in 1907, Ann had grown up in Providence. Following the death of her mother in 1925, Ann and her father moved to Oregon. It was there that Ann met and later married Alexander Hunter Campbell.

While living in Portland, Oregon, Ann gave birth to Roger in 1942. He was an only child. In his early teen years, Ann and Alexander moved to California, seeking greater opportunities for their son. It was there, at the age of 13, that Roger joined the Los Angeles Figure Skating Club.

Aspirations and Awards

With natural talent and ambition, Roger excelled in figure skating with the help of professional coaches, such as Bill Kipp and Mabel Fairbanks. Along with partner Diane Sherbloom, Roger won the junior silver medal at the 1959 U.S. Championships in the state of New York. In 1960, he and his partner, Yvonne Littlefield, won the bronze medal at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships in Seattle.

Campbell partnered with Dona Lee Carrier in September 1960. The two won championships in Colorado Springs and Philadelphia in January 1961. Campbell and Carrier were both part of the 1961 U.S. Figure Skating Team.

Tragedy Strikes

On February 15, 1961, the U.S. Figure Skating Team’s flight left New York City, headed to the U.S. World Figure Skating Championships in Prague, Czechoslovakia. On approach to the Brussels, Belgium, airport (the first leg of the flight), the plane had, what is still considered to this day, an unexplained malfunction.

Roger Campbell, his mother Ann and the entire 1961 U.S. Figure Skating Team were killed in an unprecedented Belgium plane crash. Roger’s mother was the only non-coach parent on the trip. Due to the tragedy, the entire championship event was cancelled that year.

In a bizarre turn of events, Campbell’s sudden death led to burial arrangements for both he and his mother in Webster County, perhaps his first and only trip to his mother’s home place. There, in the family plot, he joined the grandparents he’d never met, and his mother, Ann, reunited with her beloved parents, Robert and Minnie Brooks, former long-time residents of Providence.

Other interesting facts and references

- Patricia Shelley Bushman, is the author of a book about the tragic crash, Indelible Tracings.

- The U.S. Figure Skating Organization used the life and death experiences of the 1961 team to inspire other American figure skaters. A memorial fund was established for future skaters in honor of the team. In 2011, the Nancy Stern-Winters film Rise, which included celebrity figure skating champion Peggy Fleming and Dakota Fanning, told the story about the team, the crash and the remaking of a sport after the country’s greatest figure skaters had perished.

- Eight of the team’s skaters were former club members of the Broadmoor Skating Club in Colorado Springs. A memorial bench was placed near the front entrance of the former World Arena. Their names are engraved on the bench, as well as the crash date and the words “In Memoriam.” (See 2012 ISU Four Continents Figure Skating Championships Program Brochure - then, locate page 21)

Lady Trojans Win in Double Overtime: Thriller History Moments for WC

From a game that looked to be sealed at the free-throw line, to a double overtime WIN, Webster County girls notched up a 64-59 breathtaking final score lead to move them on to play Henderson County in the sixth district championships at Union County on Wednesday, February 20, at 7 p.m.

Game Highlights

Playback: With coach Parker McCalister starting the same all season five-member team (Papineau, Herrera, Edens, McNary and Townsend) for the Trojan beginning lineup, the game is underway. Webster County comes into the district games with a 21-4 season, Union County a 9-16.

Just after tip off, Mariah Herrera and Kolbi Edens chalk up a lead score of 5-0 for WC right away. Union County calls for an early timeout.

With a 9-6 lead at the end of the first quarter, WC’s momentum is strong. Union gets a 1–point lead during the first half, but at halftime, it’s Webster 17, Union 14.

Momentum shifts in the third quarter. Webster makes a good start, and then Union County begins to dominate on the floor, outrebounding Webster. End of third, Union leads by only 1 point, 31-30.

Webster gets back in the lead early on of the last quarter, 33-31. Union comes back strong, but only has WC holding with a 1-point lead at 46-45 and 42 seconds remaining in the game.

Webster makes one of two free throws. Game is tied, 46-46. Union goes to the line and both free throws are in. Union is ahead 48-46.

It’s a 3-pointer miss by WC, so Union goes to the line. One free throw is in. Now there is less than 14 seconds to go.

Can you believe it? Amazing! Webster’s Maddie Duncan makes her first basket of the game, a 3-pointer that just beats the buzzer! Game is tied 49-49. Overtime is on.

Overtime begins and Union gains back the lead. Webster ties it up 52-52. Union leads 54-53. Webster leads again 55-54. Union goes for a timeout and a FOUL is called. Union goes to the line, gets ½. Score is 55-55.

Webster’s ball, but it’s a miss. OT ends, another tie, 55-55!

Second overtime opens with a 3-pointer from Webster and two completion free throws, to lead 59-55. Bailey Townsend ups the score with two more free throws to a 61-57 lead for Webster. Union gets a basket, now WC leads by two at 61-59. Timeout is called.

WC plays keep away after the timeout, only 35 seconds left. Another timeout is called. WC goes to the line, gets ½. Union misses and Webster rebounds. It’s now a 3-point game. Bailey Townsend gets ½ at the line.

The buZZzzer sounds. Lady Trojans WIN 64-59!!!

My wonderful hubby and I are true Webster County sweethearts! Both born and raised here we met in high school. We ran in the same group of friends but I knew he was my prince charming when he saved me by pulling my car out of a ditch when I wrecked one snowy evening, because of course I would not dream of calling my parents! Not long after he became a true friend and before long that friendship became what is now a 15 year relationship with 2 beautiful children! I cannot imagine a day without my Webster County Sweetheart!

Past and present citizens of Webster County determine the journey ahead for the TWCKY E-zine. Get ready to Roll!

I’ll be throwing in my two cents now and then, but this e-zine is about the people of Webster County, period.

My purpose in starting the e-zine was to share about Webster County, and I plan to do so. But I want much of it to come from the people. From folks who have lived in Webster County and moved away, having a unique perspective or just something special to share (a poem, a story, a praise, a funny joke, etc.).

And from current residents who want to brag about a ball team or a community food bank or their favorite restaurant but like doing it more than in just a tweet or a Facebook post or just to a select WC audience.

It’s a gathering place, a connection and a walk down memory lane or whatever you need it to be. …a place where some may share that would never do so anywhere else because they have the Webster County audience tuned in.

They don’t have to be invited, be friended or even show that they are following. They can just pull up the page and read.

April 15 is always a day of celebration in our household.
Not only does it end a long tax season for my accountant
husband Terry, but it is also the date when we fell in love
twenty-two years ago...

In the spring of 1980, I had been following one particular
guy around school for month. I just did not have the nerve to
go up and talk to him. An embarrassing situation from that
winter -- truly prevented me from approaching him.

He had been a starter for the junior varsity basketball
team and I was a cheerleader. I had many opportunities to
see this gorgeous guy in action. (That is if I would wear my
glasses -- which I was usually too vain to do!). To say the
least I am blind as a bat. As Terry sank a half court last

second shot -- this extremely near sighted cheerleader,
mistaking the blurred vision for another guy, began cheers
for Jeff not Terry. As the crowd started chuckling, my face
turned crimson as Terry walked by me to get to the locker
room. Months later, he only knew me as the dingy cheerleader
who could not even get his name right when he hit a great shot!

However, my best friend attended church with Terry. Shirley
decided to play matchmaker. She not only invited me to a
church sponsored skating party -- but also literally pushed
me in his parent's car to ride to the skating rink. Although
the skating rink was fifteen miles away -- very few words were
spoken. As I sank down in that backseat, I just wanted to
keep sinking. This had truly been a huge mistake.

After we arrived at the skating rink, things did not get any
better. Each couple skate I hoped and prayed that Terry
would ask me. He didn't! After about three couple skates,
I decided enough was enough! So I took turns skating with
his two best friends. As the last call for a couple skate
came over the rink's p.a., Terry finally skated somewhat
awkwardly and stood beside the rails with me.

"I guess you wonder why I have not asked you to couple
skate?" were his first words to me. Trying ever so hard
not to look in those big beautiful brown eyes that made
me melt, I answered nonchalantly and dishonestly, "No,
not really."

This guy not only ignored my tart reply, but would also
win my heart with the following reply. Casting those
beautiful eyes down at his skates, he humbly remarked,
"I only didn't ask because I do not skate very well. If you
are not afraid that I will make you fall, would you please
skate with me?"

This time I did look into those eyes and did melt.

As we skated hand in hand to Always and Forever, I knew
life would never be the same. I never knew a guy that
actually would admit any of his faults -- let alone also worry
about a girl to boot! I had first been attracted to his beauty
on the outside.

Who wouldn't notice those beautiful brown eyes? Nonetheless,
it would be his beautiful heart that made me realize how truly
special he was.

I had actually found my Prince Charming. Even though
he was not riding on a handsome steed (but rented roller
skates), he made me feel like Cinderella at the ball as we
skated around the rink. I clung tightly to his hand -- not
because I was afraid of midnight -- but to help keep him
from falling.

Looking at our wedding pictures -- my favorite is walking
down the aisle as husband and wife. Most couples walk
down the aisle with the bride's hand tucked neatly in the
crook of her husband's arm. Not us! We walked down
the aisle after being pronounced man and wife -- just like
we had done seven years before at that skating rink. Hand in
hand -- with the promise of helping keep the other one
from falling.

Our children love to hear the story of how their dad did
not know how to skate and asked me to hold his hand
to help us keep from tumbling. But it had already been
too late for their mother. Only after one look into those
eyes, she had fallen... fallen in love with Prince Charming.
