Laila Peak, Pakistan

Laila Peak is a 20,000ft (6096m) high mountain, part of the Karakoram mountain range in Pakistan. Well known for it’s beautiful, distinctive spear-like shape, Laila Peak has only been climbed a few times. Unsurprising given that it’s dramatic northwest face features a 45-degree slope for more than 4900 vertical feet (1500m). Only the most experienced of climbers would dare take on this feat.

The climbing season runs from June until September. Very few climb in the Karakoram Range during the winter months, due to high levels of precipitation. Regardless of which month is chosen, climbing conditions are far from ideal. One of the main issues climbers face is that snow does not always freeze overnight, and climbing this soft snow for long periods is extremely tiring. A team of 4 British alpine climbers, led by Simon Yates in 1987, completed the first ascent. The unofficial ascent was made via the west face from the Gondogoro Glacier, and was later documented by Yates in his biography, the Flame of Adventure, published in 2002.

Whilst Laila peak and the nearby village of Hushe in the Masherbrum valley do not lie in a ‘restricted zone’ (an area close to Pakistan’s’ borders), the nearby valleys of Gondogoro and Chogolisa do. This means that if you are a foreign national climbing in these valleys, you will need to purchase a permit and hire a licensed guide.

Laila Peak is situated in central Karakoram, but is quite easy to access from Hushe village, via a road from Skardu. Therefore, to get to Laila Peak, international travellers must first fly into Skardu. From here, trekking companies offer private jeeps large enough to carry passengers and an expedition load. The drive from Skardu to Hushe takes approximately 8 hours. Once in Hushe, base camp can be reached in around 2 days, though it may be wise to take longer, in order to better acclimatise to the high altitude.

Both Skardu and Hushe feature a range of accommodation options to suit all budgets due to a relatively large number of trekkers passing through. Many climbers choose to make camp on the outskirts of the Hushe village, whilst there are also a number of camping spots on the way to base camp.

Jeita Grotto, Libanon

Jeita Grotto, the longest cave in the Middle East, is located approximately 11 miles (18km) north of Beirut. It consists of two separate, but interconnected, limestone caves, and boasts a length of 5.6 miles (9km). One of the worlds most amazing agglomerations of stalactites and stalagmites, Jeita Grotto is widely considered to be the pride of Lebanon, and featured as a finalist in the New 7 Wonders of Nature competition.

The caves were inhabited by prehistoric man, with evidence suggesting that they were previously used to produce swords. Reverend William Thompson, an American missionary, is credited with the modern discovery of the caves in 1836. Thompson is said to have advanced 50 metres into the caves before firing his gun. The resultant echoes assured him that the caves were to be of significant importance.

Jeita Grotto was not explored further until the 1870’s, when Maxwell and Huxley of the Beirut Water Company carried out extensive expeditions of the caves, reaching 1060 metres inside the grotto. Lebanese explorers have ventured deeper into the cave since the 1940’s, and have so far exposed 5.6mi (9km) of the Jeita Grotto. The caves were initially known as the Grottoes of Nahr al-Kalb, after the underground river that runs through the grottoes. Several names were subsequently used, including Djaita, Jehita, and finally, Jeita. Jeita is derived from the town in which the caves entrance is situated, and is loosely translated in Aramaic as the ‘roar’ or ‘noise’ of water.

A tour of the lower grotto involves a 1650ft (500m) electric boat trip along a subterranean, black lake. At first, you are met with resonant sounds of rushing water and cool air but, as the boat ventures further into the cave, profound silence is experienced. The boat tour provides a marvellous sample of the enormous 20,300ft (6200m) lower grotto. The experienced is enhanced by a lighting system which illuminates the columns and structures within.

Unlike the lower grotto, the upper grotto can be visited on foot. Access is via a specially conceived 384ft (117m) long concrete walkway. Only 2460ft (750m) of the 6990ft (2130m) cave is accessible for visitors. The upper grotto features a large concentration of crystallized formations such as stalagmites, stalactites, ponds, mushrooms, columns, curtains and draperies. Three chambers are accessible to visitors. The first is the white chamber, which features the caves most impressive formations. It is home to the worlds longest stalactite, which measures 27ft (8.2m) in length. The second is the red chamber, which is named due to its colour. The red chamber towers to 106m (348ft) high, and is between 98ft (30m) to 160ft (50m) wide. The third chamber is the highest of the three, at a height of 390ft (120m).

The best way to get to Jeita Grotto is to drive from Beirut. The caves are only 11 miles (18 km) north of Beirut. Another option would be to take a minibus from Dawra to the Jeita turn-off on the Beirut-Jounieh highway. Here, there are taxis waiting who can take you the remaining 3 miles (5km) to Jeita Grotto. Alternatively, you can take a taxi directly from Beirut.

The caves are open for the vast majority of the year, every day of the week apart from Monday. Opening hours vary depending on the time of year, thus, it is advised to check the official website prior to organising your trip. Each year, the caves close for around 4 weeks from late January until early February. During winter, the lower grotto is often closed when the water level becomes too high. The temperature in the caves remains constant at 61 degrees Fahrenheit (16 degrees Celcius) throughout the year. Unfortunately, there is nowhere to stay overnight at the caves. However, there is a range of accommodation options available in Beirut.

Situated close to the bustling city of Kunming in China’s Lunan Yi Autonomous province, Stone Forest National Park is a scenic area boasting an array of captivating limestone formations. Bewitching, dove grey stones, shaped like trees, animals and even fungi, rise up from the earth and point into the heavens, casting eerie shadows. Unsurprisingly, the Stone Forest National Park is very popular amongst tourists who are keen to marvel at its unique rock formations, some of which measure up to 130ft (40m) in height.

Geologists believe that the various rock shapes were created at least 270 million years ago by a combination of natural phenomena. Unique geological conditions contributed to the creation of these clustered rock formations, some of which are said to resemble petrified trees. The peculiar forest landscape covers an area of 135 sq. mi. (350 sq. km) and encompasses a plethora of spectacular vistas. In 2007, two parts of the site, the Naigu Stone Forest and Suogeyi Village, were named UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

According to ancient Chinese folklore, Ashima, a great Yi beauty, was born in the area. She fell in love with Ahei, but was kidnapped by Azhi, the son of the village leader who wanted to force her to marry. Azhi challenged Ahei to a singing competition that lasted for three days but he lost and had to set Ashima free. Whilst on her way back home, Ashima drowned after a river flood caused by Azhi. This is how the rock of Ashima in the small stone forest was formed. Locals now claim that if you call Ashima, she will answer you. Millions of years ago, the ocean would have covered the site that Stone Forest National Park now occupies. Over time, the waters receded, exposing the striking Stone Forest region.

The areas surrounding Stone Forest National Park are home to the Yi or Lolo people. The Yi speak a number of languages and many important works of literature, history and medicine, written in Old Yi script dating back to the 13th century, remain in use. Annually, on the 24th day of the sixth lunar month, Yi people gather in the forest as part of Torch Festival celebrations.

Stone Forest National Park is found just outside the metropolis of Kunming and is open daily, between 8:30AM and 6:00PM. A local saying states: "If you have visited Kunming without seeing the Stone Forest, you have wasted your time". The park is not free to enter; an admission fee is levied. Having paid the entrance fee, day-trippers gain access to a number of fascinating rock formations, sweeping parkland, and dense forest. It is recommended that visitors spend at least two hours on site, as there is much to see.

Both Major Stone Forest and Small Stone Forest feature confounding clusters of looming rock. Major Stone Forest is considered the most elegant and impressive of the two, as bird, animal and human shapes are apparent in its crags and pillars. In Minor Stone Forest, visitors enjoy views of “The Cluster of Pinnacles Propping up the Sky” and “The Stone Singing Praises of Plums”. Ashima’s rock is also situated in the Small Stone Forest, and is considered a sacred symbol of hope and freedom among the Yi people. Primitive art is still in evidence on some of the stones. There is a Karst Geological Museum situated on site, housing over 1200 items, with all descriptions written in English. Having paid the park entry fee, the museum is free to enter. Many tour operators and hotels facilitate daytrips to the Stone Forest. Guided tours of the site are also available at extra cost.

Stone Forest National Park is open all year round. Since its monuments are outdoors, visitors are advised to check the weather forecast before setting out - the region’s tropical climate means that rainfall is fairly frequent. Torch festivities, which include music, dance, and wrestling, generally occur in June. During high season, the park is likely to be crowded with tourists and visitors may have to queue to gain entry. Regular buses to the park run from Kunming East Coast Station (situated on the Eastern edge of Kunming) all year round. By bus, it takes around 2 hours to reach the Stone Forest. Tours can be booked in advance, and day-trippers are best advised to book with reputable tour providers, as touted tours are generally far more costly.

Cenarth Falls, Wales

If you would like to find out more about the history and culture of the area, then be sure to visit the National Coracle Centre, set in the grounds of the 17th century flour mill, along the river Teifi. Here you can take in some of Cenarth's rich history, which centres around the coracle. A coracle is an ancient fishing boat, typically weighing between 25-40 pounds (11-18kg) and built with a basket framework covered with canvas and tar. Fishermen used to walk 5-10 miles up the River Teifi, before drifting back down, hoping to catch salmon or trout. Examples of coracles from all over the world can be found here, including the ones used on the River Teifi.

The easiest way to get to Cenarth is to drive as it is a small village with no train station and limited public bus services. It is well signposted from local areas, and served by either the A484 or the B4332 roads. When you arrive in Cenarth, there is parking available on the north side of the river for a small charge, or a few free spaces can sometimes be found on the south side of the river.

There are a number of small camping grounds and caravan sites in the area, along with one larger holiday park in Cenarth itself. Numerous self-catering cottages can also be found in Cenarth and neighbouring villages. If you are looking to stay in a hotel, your best option may be to stay in nearby Cardigan (7mi/11km).

The Wave, Arizona

The Wave is a geological marvel found on the slopes of the Coyote Buttes, at the Arizona-Utah border. It’s believed to date back to the Jurassic period during which time prevailing winds pushed the sandy desert dunes across the sandstone, etching it, while water runoff deposited chemicals such as manganese and iron. The resulting bands of color are referred to as the Liesegang rings, named after a German chemist. Swirled bands of color run through the sandstone, ranging from red, pink, orange, yellow, white and green.

The formation of the Wave began 190 million years ago, when desert dunes compacted and solidified into striped sandstone. The peculiar and unique fluctuating stratum was created by slow wind and rain erosion. The Wave was virtually unknown until the 1990’s when it was widely advertised in German travel brochures, and featured in the 1996 movie Faszination Natur.

In order to protect the rock, only 20 visitors are permitted to access the Wave each day. Permits are issued online through a lottery system - more information here. A small permit fee will apply. Despite the limited access to protect the landscape, hikers must remain careful as the Wave has edges that will break easily if stepped upon.

Rain storms can make the road to the Wave impassable. They bring numerous pools which form for several days, containing hundreds of tadpoles and fairy shrimp. Reaching the Wave involves a 3-mile hike (6-mile roundtrip) across open desert, with no signposted path to follow. A GPS is therefore highly recommended, as it not unheard of for people to get lost without ever reaching the famous landmark.

The best time of year to visit the Wave is during either spring or fall, as the weather is neither too hot nor too cold. Summer temperatures can exceed 100 degrees Fahrenheit (38 degrees Celsius). Since reaching the Wave requires a 3-mile hike across the open desert (6-mile roundtrip), summer is not an ideal time to visit. During the winter, temperatures are cold at night, but mild during the day, making hiking possible during warmer periods. In order to get the best photographs, visit either during the middle of the day when there are no shadows to be seen, or during the morning/early evening when stark shadows over the land provide dramatic visuals.

The closest towns are Kanab in Utah (77km/48mi) to the west, and Page in Arizona (72km/45 mi) to the east. In both towns, you will be able to find a variety of hotels/guest houses to suit your taste/budget. The drive to the Wave from both Kanab and Page takes approximately 1h20m. Bora Bora is situated approximately 140 miles (225km) northwest of Tahiti, in the western Leeward group of the Society islands of French Polynesia. It is a rugged, volcanic, mountainous island featuring a large lagoon surrounded by beautiful coral reefs and islets. In the Tahitian language, the pronunciation is closer to Pora Pora, and is commonly translated to mean “first born”. Bora Bora was first occupied by Polynesian traders and colonists in the fourth century. In 1722, Dutch explorer Jakob Roggeveen made the first European sighting, but a European would not land on the island until James Cook in 1770. Bora Bora remained an independent kingdom until annexed by the French in 1888.

During World War Two, the island served as a military supply base for the United States. During “Operation Bobcat”, military construction on the island included an airstrip, oil depot, and naval fortifications. After the war, the small airfield would remain the only international airport in all of French Polynesia until 1960. In 2004, all of the French Polynesia islands were granted limited autonomy and citizenship, but would remain under French administration and legal jurisdiction. The permanent population of Bora Bora is quite small, with less than 9000 residents as of 2008. The majority of residents live in Vaitape, found on the western edge of the main island. Tupai, the largest atoll, has a number of coconut plantation workers, but no permanent population. While French is the official language, Tahitian is commonly spoken.

The island of Bora Bora with its spectacular lagoon and beautiful coral reefs is just 11.3 square miles (29,266,865 sq. km) in size. Volcanic in origin, the island is mountainous and jagged, with bare black rock on the higher points. Centered in the island are the remains of an extinct volcano, split into two distinct black stone peaks, Mount Pahia and Mount Otemanu. Pahia is the shorter of the pair, at 2,165 feet (660m), while Otemanu tops out at 2,379 feet (725m). Despite its volcanic origins, there is an abundance of tropical trees, plants and flowers. Common varieties include coconut palms, orange trees, and vanilla plants. The popular noni, a tropical evergreen known for its edible fruit, is abundant.

There are no native mammals on Bora Bora due to its volcanic past. However, due to human activity, there are several non-native species on the island. Cows, horses, and sheep are common, as are dogs and cats. In contrast, there are numerous species of birds found on the island. Black-winged Petrels, Pacific Swallow, and the White Tern are regularly seen. Many other species that are frequently encountered throughout French Polynesia will also be recognized on Bora Bora.

Marine life abounds around in the waters of Bora Bora. Numerous fish species are encountered, including red snapper, jackfish, and lemon sharks. Sea turtles, dolphins, and migrating humpback whales are frequently spotted. Due to the ample marine plankton around Bora Bora, the island is world-famous for the abundant population of ray species, including leopard, eagle and the huge Manta Ray.

The Polynesian summer months, November to April, are often hot and humid. The average temperature during the summer reaches 85 degrees, and the average rainfall is over 10 inches a month. Winter in Bora Bora is slightly cooler, but much drier, with less than 4 inches of monthly precipitation.

Grand Canyon, USA

The Grand Canyon is a majestic steep-sided canyon that attracts an incredible 5 million visitors per annum. Located in the southwestern U.S. state of Arizona, it has an average depth of 1220 meters (4000ft), and is 277 miles (445km) long. The South Rim of the Grand Canyon is the most frequently visited, thanks to its breathtaking views of both the canyon and the Colorado River far below. Interestingly, the Grand Canyon National Park is home to several distinct ecosystems, ranging from desert to forest land. These various ecosystems serve as an ecological refuge for many plants and animals, including many endangered species. Though not the deepest, longest, or widest canyon in the world, the Grand Canyon is renowned for its beauty and awe-inspiring size. The incredible 277-mile long rift divides the Colorado Plateau, forming part of the Colorado River Basin.

Erosion from the Colorado River is responsible for the formation of the canyon. Many estimates suggest that the process began about 6 million years ago. However, a recent study indicated that it might have begun sooner than previously thought - as early as 17 million years ago! Fascinatingly, the walls of the canyon offer an unparalleled representation of Earth’s different geologic phases. In fact, the rocks found in the walls of the Grand Canyon are believed to be approximately 1/3 of the age of the Earth itself.

The average elevations of the Colorado River, South Rim and North Rim are 2200 ft. (above sea level), 6800 ft. and 8000 ft., respectively. This wide range in elevation gives rise to the Grand Canyon’s immense biodiversity. Five of the seven life zones can be found in Grand Canyon National Park, as well as three out of the four main types of desert. As a result, the park boasts over 1500 native plant species, 355 species of birds, 89 mammalian species, 47 species of reptiles, 9 species of amphibians, and 17 species of fish. The park is also home to numerous endangered plant and animal species including the desert tortoise, two species of leopard frogs, the bald eagle, American peregrine falcon, and the bighorn sheep, just to name a few.

The best time of year to visit the Grand Canyon is during either spring or fall, when hiking conditions are ideal, and visitor numbers slightly lower. That is not to say that you should disregard a summer trip to the canyon by any means. However, high temperatures (exceeding 100 degrees Fahrenheit) do not provide ideal hiking conditions and large crowds will be present as it’s the peak tourist season. The winter brings harsh cold (sub-zero) and the chance of heavy snowfall, which may prevent access to either rim. In fact, the road to the North Rim is closed between late-October and mid-May each year.

Fly into either Las Vegas or Phoenix International airports. From here, you can hire a car, or alternatively, book yourself onto one of the many coach tours on offer. The drive to the Grand Canyon from either one of these airports takes approximately 5 hours. To drive to the Grand Canyon, take the Arizona State Route 67 to access the North Rim, or State Route 64 to access the South Rim and Grand Canyon village.

Salar De Uyuni, Bolivia

Salar de Uyuni is the worlds largest salt flat, spanning 4086 square miles (10,582 sq. km) in south-western Bolivia. Unlike traditional deserts, which have sand in abundance, the Salar de Uyuni features vast expanses of glistening white salt. The landscape is entirely flat, bar a few small ‘islands’ such as Isla Incahuasi, which only accentuates its surreal beauty. Underneath the cemented salt are large reservoirs of lithium-rich brine. In fact, approximately 70% of the world’s lithium reserves are found in Salar de Uyuni and thus it’s not surprising that there’s an entire industry devoted to its extraction. Unlike any other place on earth, the Salar de Uyuni is breathtakingly beautiful and provides an extraordinary experience that will not be quickly forgotten.

Containing an estimated 10 billion tonnes of salt, the question often arises as to how Salar de Uyuni was formed. Essentially, the Altiplano (high plateau) here had no drainage outlets, which meant that water from the surrounding mountains once collated to form a giant lake.

High salinity meant that whilst this vast, prehistoric lake has long since evaporated under the fierce Andean sun, a thick crust of salt remains, forming what we now recognise as the salt flats of Salar de Uyuni. Aymaran legend provides an alternative explanation, involving the mountains surrounding the salt flats, Kusina, Kusku and Tunupa. The story is that these mountains were once giant people, and Tunupa and Kusku were married. When Kusku betrayed his wife for Kusina, Tunupa’s tears are said to have formed the salt flats.

The best and most popular way to fully experience Salar de Uyuni is by taking a 4x4 tour across the salt flats. It's worth noting that shared tours usually accommodate for up to 6 tourists, and thus for a more comfortable experience, a private tour should be arranged. Such tours usually involve a minimum of one nights stay in rather basic accommodation, and thus it is recommended that you bring plenty of warm clothes and a warm sleeping bag for the night. Further, sun cream is a necessity as the reflections from the salt accentuate the suns effect.

Adventurous travellers may also wish to try a night’s stay in one of the areas renowned salt hotels. With no building materials around for miles, some locals have taken it upon themselves to build structures from bricks of cemented salt. In these hotels, everything from the beds and tables to the flush toilets are constructed from salt blocks.

Even if you don’t fancy staying, you can usually view these hotels during the day for a nominal fee. In the dry season, Salar de Uyuni is a surreal experience not to be missed. However, rain takes it to a whole new level. As a thin sheet of water covers the flats, it reflects a perfect representation of the sky above so that it is impossible to tell where sky ends and the land begins.

The best time to visit Salar de Uyuni ultimately depends upon the experience you are looking for. For the best climate, we recommend you visit between July and October. However, for an increased chance of seeing the reflective surfaces, you should visit between March and April. Most tours to Salar de Uyuni originate from the small town of Uyuni. To get to Uyuni, you have a number of options available to you.

Most people choose to travel from Ororo, where it is 7 hours by train, or 8 hours by bus. These tickets are quite often booked up on the day, so it is recommended to book in advance. Alternatively, you can take a bus from La Paz (12-15 hours) or Potosi (6-7 hours). Lastly, you can choose to rent a car or fly into Uyuni’s small airport from La Paz.

It was decided to keep the Hobbit holes set as tourist attractions, (they blend smoothly into the environment), there is even a sign which says :”Welcome to Hobbiton” on the main road, directing people to this wounderful little Hobbit town.

Green Dragon

Although the set was not built to last, the hobbit hole facades having been constructed from untreated timber, ply and polystyrene, it was evident that the location was of interest to tourists. Guided tours of the 5.5 hectares (14 acres) movie set site commenced in 2002 and continue to be provided on a daily basis, the two hour excursion having to be booked in advance. Highlights of the tour include Bagshot Row, the Party Tree, and Bilbo's Bag End home. There are now 44 hobbit holes on view although it is not possible to enter any of them. (The interior of Bag End was shot in a studio in Wellington.

Two hours south of Auckland lies the lush farmland of the Hamilton - Waikato region. Famous for dairying and fine thoroughbred horses, it's easy to see why these green pastures and rolling hills were chosen to portray Hobbiton and The Shire.

Hobbit fans can visit the Hobbiton Movie Set on a guided tour; it has more than 44 unique hobbit holes, including Bag End (Bilbo's house). As you wander through the heart of the Shire, you'll get to hear the fascinating commentary about how it was all created. Along your journey you'll see the mill, the double arched bridge and the famous Party Tree before stopping for a drink at the Green Dragon Inn. Evening tours are also available, and they include a feast fit for a hobbit!

A number of great farmstays are also on offer in Matamata. Just east of town you can discover the North Island’s highest waterfalls, Wairere Falls, which are a spectacular sight plunging 153m.

The Wairere Falls walking track showcases a diverse range of natural scenery and from the lookout you can enjoy magnificent views over the valley and the Waikato Plains. Matamata is situated 2 hours' drive from Auckland, 45 minutes from Hamilton and 1 hour from Rotorua.

Komodo National Park

Komodo National Park, situated in the heart of the Indonesian archipelago, is consist of three large islands (Komodo, Rinca and Padar), and numerous smaller ones, all of volcanic origin. Perhaps the most dramatic of all Indonesian landscapes, the park features rough hillsides of dry savannah, green thorny vegetation, perfect sandy beaches, and crystal-clear blue waters atop magnificent coral. In addition to its beauty, the park is also renowned for being the only place in the entire world where Komodo dragons exist naturally.

The Indonesian government first established Komodo National Park on the 6th March 1980 to include the islands of Komodo, Padar, Rinca and Gili Motong. Four years later, this area was expanded by Ministerial Decree to include more of the surrounding waters along with a section of mainland Flores. UNESCO has also recognised the parks importance, designating it both a Biosphere Reserve (1986) and a World Heritage Site (1991).

Initially established to protect and conserve the Komodo dragon species, the national park has since developed wider goals to protect the overall biodiversity of the area, both terrestrial and marine. Unfortunately, despite an increased focus on conservation, a number of potential threats remain. For instance, increasing visitor numbers, overdevelopment, fishing and unregulated tourism all serve as threats to biodiversity.

Today, most the inhabitants of Komodo are fisherman originally from other islands. Some descendents of the original Komodo people remain in the region, but their language and culture is becoming increasingly integrated with the migrant population. The early history of the original Komodo islanders isn’t very well documented, with very little known about them other than that they were subjects of the Sultanate of Bima. However, given the remoteness of Komodo from Bima, it is likely they were rarely bothered by the Sultanate other than for occasional tributes.

The most popular activities within Komodo National Park are trekking, scuba diving, and observing the Komodo dragon. The scuba diving and snorkelling in Komodo is world class, with beautiful coral reefs, clear waters, and marine animals in humongous quantities. Furthermore, the warm sea water allows you to focus what you are seeing, rather than think about how cold you are. Walking is also fantastic on the islands, with numerous marked paths available to follow. A particular highlight of trekking in the park is spotting various types of tropical animals and plants that you are unlikely to see in everyday life, along with beautiful scenery in virtually every direction. Finally, seeing the Komodo dragon plays a big part in many people’s reasons for visiting the park. If you do spot one, do not approach, and follow the safety advice given below as they can be dangerous, particularly when hungry.

The typical method of getting to Komodo National Park is from either Labuan Bajo in West Flores, or Bima in Eastern Sumbawa. Flights originate from Denpasar in Bali to these locations on a daily basis. Once at either Labuan Bajo or Bima, you must travel by boat to Loh Liang on Komodo Island, or Loh Buaya on Rinca Island; the main entry points to the park.

Whilst you can visit Komodo National Park year round, the best time to visit is in the dry reason, which runs from April to December. During these months, the weather is beautiful; not too hot, with average temperatures of 79 degrees Fahrenheit (26 degrees Celsius), and very little rain. If you dislike rain, then it is advisable to avoid the wet season, which typically runs from January to March.

If you are visiting specifically to observe the Komodo dragon in its natural habitat, then you should avoid the mating and nesting seasons, which run from July to August, and September to November, respectively. During these periods, spotting the Komodo dragons becomes increasingly difficult. Within Komodo National Park, the only accommodation options available to visitors are simple bungalows found near the ranger’s station. These rooms are not expensive, but you get what you pay for, as they are far from luxurious. If you would prefer to stay in nicer accommodation, you should stay on the nearby island of Bali, where there are many luxurious living spaces available.

Lake O'hara, Canada

Lake O’Hara is a lake situated in the alpine area of Yoho National Park, British Columbia, Canada. Yoho National Park is neighboring with Banff National park and Kootenay National Park all are apart of the Canadian Rockies, There is a limitation to the amount of people that can visit each day in order to protect the sensitive alpine environment. Perched high in the mountains east of Field, Lake O'Hara is worth the significant hassle involved in reaching the place, which is an encapsulation of the whole Rockies. Compact wooded hillsides, alpine meadows, snow-covered passes, mountain vistas and glaciers are all wrapped around the stunning lake. A basic day trip is worthwhile, but stay overnight in the backcountry and you'll be able to access many more trails, some quite difficult, all quite spectacular. The Alpine Circuit (12km) has a bit of everything.

To reach the lake, you can take the shuttle bus from the Lake O'Hara parking lot, 15km east of Field on Hwy 1. A quota system governs bus access to the lake and limits permits for the 30 backcountry campsites. You can freely walk the 11km from the parking area, but no bikes are allowed. The area around Lake O'Hara usually remains covered with snow or very muddy until mid-July.

Make reservations for the bus trip or for camping (a permit costs $10 per night) three months in advance. Available spots often go the first hour lines are open, from 8am mountain time. Given the popularity of Lake O'Hara, reservations are basically mandatory, unless you want to walk. However, if you don't have advance reservations, six day-use seats on the bus and three to five campsites are set aside for 'standby' users. To try to snare these, call at 8am the day before.

Lake O'Hara Lodge has been leaving guests slack-jawed for over 80 years. The only place to stay at the lake without a tent, the lodge is luxurious in a rustic way. Its environmental practices are lauded. There's a two night minimum stay.

Telica Volcano, Nicaragua

The Telíca Volcano is an active volcano about 30 kilometers from León. The latest violent eruption was in 1948, but the volcano has ever since been smoking and grumbling. The volcano is just over a kilometer high (1,061 meters) and has a huge crater: 120 meters deep and 700 meters in diameter.

The hot springs of San Jacinto are connected to the Telíca volcano, even though they are not at the foot of the volcano. San Jacinto is actually one of the places you can start your hike from. It is a long way to the volcano, but because there are no roads that pass by (let alone go up) you have no other choice than to spend most of your time hiking TO instead of ON the volcano.

From San Jacinto you basically walk away from the road and the village, in the direction of the mountain right behind the hot springs. This mountain is not the volcano though. You will walk on a sandy (volcanic sand, actually), little road, filled with rocks and only accessible by foot or horse. This hike will be tough and quite tiring. Besides some corn fields there is only nature around, and you’ll really get an off-road feeling from this hike.

Then, after about three-four hours of walking you will be at the foot of the volcano. Sometimes you can see smoke come out of the volcano, even though the crater is on the other side. The actual climb is not that hard. In one-two hours you can be at the crater. It is never really steep, and there grow lots of trees and plants on the volcano. There are several spots from where you have a great view. Before you reach the crater, you will have to cross a beautiful valley with grassland, trees, and rocks. Just seeing the crater’s walls rising from the valley is impressing.

You can then walk up to the crater’s rim and take a peek if there is no smoke blowing in your direction. If you’re lucky – or if you happen to be there when it’s dark – you will see the lava boiling and glowing in the depth, 120 meters below. This spectacular feeling will even be improved when you look around. The Telíca volcano forms part of the volcanic chain that runs all the way down and includes the volcanoes in Lake Nicaragua. You will see several volcanoes in line, some smoking and others dormant.

Because of the length of the trip, it’s most comfortable to spend the night at the foot of the crater. Several tour-operators organize such trips, and it allows you to rest and also to see a magnificent sunrise from the crater rim. The valley provides a good spot to sleep. Besides the obvious equipment and food you should also bring an extra sweater, especially when you arrive at dusk. There is a strong wind close to the crater, and when you are all sweating this makes it actually very cold without dry clothes. Some tour-operators also offer night hikes: you hike at night, without sleeping, and arrive at the volcano just in time to watch the sunrise. This has the advantage of at least half of the hike not walking in the sun.

Hiking all the way back will take about three-five hours, depending on the group. Because it’s best to spend the night at the volcano – and also because it is hard to find and ascent the volcano without knowing the area –it’s best to hire a guide or go with a tour-operator. It’s also good to bring sun lotion and prepare for some dust-eating, especially in the dry season

Wli Waterfall, Ghana

Wli Waterfalls is a predominately farming community located in the Hohoe Municipality. It is in fact closer to the Republic of Togo than the capital city of Ghana, Accra. The Akwapim-Togo range provides the perfect setting for what is to become arguably, the most impressive waterfall in Ghana. Some even believe it is the highest waterfall in West Africa. The Wli people like all other Ewes of Ghana originated from the city of Notsie in what is now Benin. The Wli people were led by their King named Togbe Ametornu I and Togbe Afaladze.

Legend has it that Togbe Ametornu I after fighting some many wars successfully decided to take his warriors around to look for food and water. After several attempts through the jungle the King and his subjects came into contact with a river that was pure and tasty. They therefore decided to look for the source of the water that took them across the same river at eleven different locations until they finally heard loud splashing water from the mountains.

They decided to climb the mountain to ascertain the source of the fall. It is believed that at the peak of the mountain, they saw beautiful water falling from the mountain. They named it Agumatsa, “let me flow through, describing the force with which the water is trying to escape from the “throat” of the mountain. This spectacle amazed the people to a great extent that they decided to worship the waterfall as their god. Accounts have been given as to how the river god refused to be photographed until some rituals were performed not only to allow for its photography but to allow women to come closer to it. The day on which the ritual was performed is celebrated as Agumatsa festival which falls on Easter Monday each year.

The forest around the wli waterfall has been preserved into what is known as the Agumatsa wildlife sanctuary. Nature lovers will find this place very interesting to visit. There are about 200 species of birds, 400 butterfly species and fruit eating bats. A visitor/tourist can choose between visiting the upper waterfalls which requires more effect as this calls hiking uphill or the lower falls. The lower falls has a plunge pool where visitors can bathe.

There river that flows downstream through the woods is so cold that it feels like drinking a refrigerated water. Popular with many ecotourism projects is the provision of alternative forms of livelihoods for natives. Wli is not short of that. There is an ostrich farm where visitors are taking through processes and procedures used in rearing those “giant” birds.

There is no limit to when periods of visitation. Visits can be done throughout the year but during the dry season that starts from October each year and ends in early march the following year the volume of water decreases. The raining season presents the best opportunity to see the falls it is “glory and spender” but that also presents its own challenges. Rainfalls are heavy and usually “unannounced” all the time and conditions become a bit treacherous. However, visitors should not worry about the rains and the terrains since these conditions provide a perfect setting for the adventurous. Visitors or tourists are encouraged to start their tour of the wildlife sanctuary and falls at 8:00am and the falls are opened till 5:00pm each day.

Visitors coming from Accra should take any Accra-Hohoe bound trotro from the numerous trotor stations dotted around the capital. At Hohoe, visitors can obtain more information from the Tourism information centre on how to get to the falls or can just go straight away to trotro station where there numerous trotors and taxi specifically meant for Wli. Those connecting from Ho should also take a Ho-Hohoe trotro from the main lorry station. Follow the steps described above and you will safely get there.

Imlil Valley, Morocco

Imlil is a village in the High Atlas Mountains of Morocco. It is a good starting point for a trekking holiday or for climbing Mt. Toubkal the highest mountain in North Africa (4167m). Imlil village has a variety of shops and "pensions" as well as being a base for guides and trekking parties. The route to Toubkal starts in the village. Its a progressive community and money from tourism goes into a variety of projects organised by the Village association such as litter collection and disposal and a new Community Hammam opened in November 2004.

Imlil is a base for mountain guides and muleteers who work in the area surrounding Jebel Toubkal. It is also a main entry point for those wishing to trek in the mountains in this area. The valley in which Imlil lies is periodically flooded. The most obvious evidence of the most recent flood (1995) is the wreckage of cars on the valley floor north of Imlil. At this point in the mountains, it becomes true Berber country. The almost constant hustling continues, but it feels of a much less threatening nature.

There is an Imlil Village Association which is using money from tourism to address the problems it brings, like litter, as well as start new projects. A local "tax" has been agreed by many of the businesses providing tourist facilities to fund projects. To date a Land Rover Ambulance has been acquired so that the valley population has a safer way of getting to hospital, litter collections have been started and in December 2004 a village Hammam (Community Bath house) has been opened on the little road up to the school. Oddly, while the villages in the next valley don't have running water or electricity, Imlil has its own mobile phone mast: The villagers never stop texting each other. The Imlil Association is part of the "Valleys of Imlil Association" which is an umbrella organisation which other villages are able to join to promote and plan ecologically responsible tourism and infrastructure.Its a great place to go.

What to do?

Trekking is one of the very best things Morocco has to offer In the High Atlas, the country boasts one of the most rewarding mountain ranges in the world. If you are used to the Pyrenees or Alps, here you will feel you are moving a century or so back in time. For all trekking activities (for guides, maps or information) one can pass by Imlil Bureau des Guide just near the main parking. An official mountain guide for Toubkal ascent costs 400 dh/day. Imlil is the starting point for the ascent of Mount Toubkal, the highest mountain in North Africa. There are many guided treks up to the mountain and two refuges,Refuge de Toubkal and Les Mouflons at 3200m altitude for an overnight stay. You should seek guidance locally as to weather conditions.

Imlil is approximately 60 km south of Marrakech, and it can be reached by road through the foothills of the High Atlas Mountains. Grand taxis regularly run to and from Marrakech. The drop off point in Imlil is the scrubby space next to the Hotel-Cafe Soleil at the bottom end of the village, by the river.

By far the quickest and easiest way to get to Imlil from Marrakech is to take a grand taxi, which leave frequently when full (especially in the mornings) from the grand taxi station near Sidi Mimoun Garden. The price for a seat in a grand taxi (May 2015) is 50dh, and the journey time around 75-90 minutes. The road is now fully paved, even beyond Asni. If you can't find a grand taxi then there are other options. It takes about 80-90 minutes to get from Marrakech to Asni by bus. There are buses from the central bus station which ostensibly leave every 30minutes (but often don't for hours). Small minibuses to Asni also leave when full from in front of Sidi Mimoun Garden. A quicker way is to take a petit taxi to the out-of-town grand taxi park (15dh - if you're better at haggling you can get this lower). From there, a grand taxi will take you to Asni (90dh split between 6). Once in Asni there are minibuses and grand taxis that will take you the remaining 18km to Imlil (30 minutes in a minibus (9dh), or 20 minutes in a taxi).

Creater Lake, Oregon (USA)

Crater Lake was formed by the collapse of land following a volcanic eruption, it is 2400 meters high at it’s highest point and it is situated in the western USA, (Oregon). The gloriously blue waters in Crater Lake have been probably one of the most visited places in the United States.

Oregon is home to Crater Lake National Park which is a perfect venue for day hikes. It is the deepest lake in the United States (which averages around 350 meters in depth ) known for its deep blue color. The blue waters of the Crater Lake reflect the majestic beauty of its surrounding mountain peaks much like a giant dark-blue mirror.Spectacular photographs and gorgeous panoramas taken during a trip to Crater Lake National Park are treasures worth keeping.

Crater Lake was formed due to the collapse of Mount Mazama which was a volcano situated at the southern part of Oregon which once stood approximately 3,353 meters tall ( 11,000 feet). The caldera which measures around 6 miles wide ( 9.7 kilometers) was formed during a series of catastrophic eruptions around 5000 B.C. Wizard Island is an island which lays just off the west rim of the caldera and was formed due to later Lava eruptions. It was in 1902 when Crater Lake was declared a national park through the efforts of the renowned naturalist- William Gladstone Steel.

There are plenty of things to do when you visit Crater Lake National Park. The south entrance is the most popular alternative route to visit this national park. It is said to be open all –year round. Though this entrance, you will access Mazama Village and the Rim Village along with the park headquarters right at the Steel Visitors Center.

During the winter season, visitors are only allowed to go up to the rim of the lake and back down the same way. There will be no plowed areas to serve as road. On the other hand, the north entrance is only open from the early days of June to late October depending on the amount of snowfall.

Blue Lagoon Iceland "The Geothermal Spa"

Blue Lagoon

The Blue Lagoon is one of Iceland’s most popular attractions drawing the attention of hundreds of thousands of tourists every year. The lagoon is actually a geothermal spa fed by water from a nearby geothermal plant. The water originates near a lava flow from 6,000 feet at its deepest level (2,000 meters). The actual lagoon sits on a Lava field and the walls that surround the walkway (the very long walkway) were built from actual lava rock that comes from the field. When you swim in the lagoon you technically are swimming on top of two different continents. Iceland sits on top of the Mid Atlantic Ridge where the North American and European plates are separating at roughly 2 centimeters a year.

Above you can see the first view of the lagoon right before you enter the facilities, notice the lava field on all sides. Being 45 minutes away from the biggest city in Iceland, Reykjavik, you have to either take a tour or find other means of transportation. Being roughly 25 minutes from the airport many tour operators package Iceland tours to the Blue Lagoon and the airport together. You can have a relaxing day at the spa and then catch your flight in the afternoon.

The Blue Lagoon Iceland is a tourist trap by any definition as there are many other geothermal spas that you can visit throughout Iceland (some that are actually free). The current costs to get in as of 2010 are 28 Euro to enter, 5 Euro for a towel, 5 Euro for a bathing suit, and 9 Euro for a bath robe. You read that right, they charge you for towels and a robe, so in the end it doesn’t come out that cheap.

Night View

That doesn’t include the costs for food if you are going to eat there or for any of the premium services like the skin treatments, massages, and restaurants. Even though it can get a bit pricey there are ways to keep your costs down by bringing your own towel, you dont need the robe. I would still recommend that you visit the Blue Lagoon because it really is a great thing to experience.

I would recommend that you visit in the winter (no im not crazy) for three reasons; the first being that you wont enjoy a geothermal spa as much in hot weather, the second is that you cant see one of the most popular things to do in Iceland in the summer which are the Nothern Lights, and the last reason is that you will avoid the heard of tourists that arrive in the summer. Who would want to sit in 100 degree water at the Blue Lagoon Iceland in the summer anyway? It will get cold so make sure to bring a jacket along with your towel. Once you step into the lagoon you will feel a slight slushy feeling on your feet which is the silica mud that many have found medical refuge in. Its known to be an effective treatment for psoraisis and other skin ailments.

You can enter the water from outside the facilities or from inside so you dont have to step out into the cold weather in the winter. After entering the kids pool as I like to call it, the Blue Lagoon Iceland surprises you with a waterfall that you can sit by and enjoy (no time limits!). I must have stood there for at least 15 minutes because it really felt like a water massage. As you start to find your way around the lagoon there are certain canisters where you can scoop the silica mud and place it on your face.

They aren’t kidding when they say this stuff is magical. Once you pick it up the silica mud it feels very slimy with little stones inside. Once you place it on your face you wait for it to dry and start to peel it off. It feels like cement when you start to peel it. After you get it all off your face starts to tingle like when your arm goes to sleep. It’s not as strong of a sensation but I did stare at the mirror a little longer than usual before I walked out because it felt that much different.

Liffey Falls

Prepare for total tranquillity at Liffey Falls, which sit nestled in Tasmania's Great Western Tiers about an hour's drive from Launceston and 90 minutes from Devonport. There are few settings more peaceful than here, in this World Heritage-listed rainforest, where you listen to bird song and watch water cascade over sandstone. Follow the enchanting nature trail to Liffey Falls or spend a relaxing afternoon in the fern-fringed picnic area. Just nearby, you can explore the quaint craft-loving village of Deloraine and the limestone caves of Mole Creek Karst National Park.

Part of Tasmania's World Heritage area, Liffey Falls State Reserve is easily accessible from Launceston and Devonport, and around two and a half hour's drive from Hobart. Both Tasmanians and tourists travel here to picnic and wander through wet eucalypt forest to the base of Liffey Falls. It's the last and most spectacular of four falls which tumble down from the Great Western Tiers, exposing sandstone steps on their rush into the Liffey River. The 40-minute return walk to Liffey Falls is well-paved and has plenty of viewing platforms where you can photograph the upper cascades.

The Gulf Road Walk is a longer, quieter track leading past the falls to the Gulf Road Picnic Area, which was once a logging camp. It takes around two to three hours return to complete, and offers excellent views of Drys Bluff, the highest peak in the Great Western Tiers. Alternatively, the Liffey River Track is a 90-minute walk that starts in the Great Western Tiers, off the Lake Highway, and winds downstream to the Liffey Picnic Area.

The less energetic can just enjoy lunch in the dappled sunlight of the Liffey Picnic Area, which sits near the park's entrance and car park. It has picnic shelters and gas barbecues and is fringed by tall manferns and eucalypt trees like myrtle, sassafrass and leatherwood. There's also the Big Tree Stroll, a boardwalk looping around the base of an enormous eucalypt. The reserve shelters an array of wildlife, from birds to bats to bandicoots. Look and listen out for pink robins, green rosellas and fairy-wrens in the rainforest and spot giant crayfish and the shy platypus in and around the clear waters of the Liffey River. You might spot Tasmanian devils, quolls, bandicoots and wallabies foraging for food at dusk.

On your journey back from Liffey Falls, make time for a stopover in the charming, heritage-listed riverside village of Deloraine. In November, the town's beautifully-restored Georgian and Victorian architecture is the backdrop for one of the country's biggest craft fairs. Hunt for antiques, meet Tasmanian devils in the wildlife park and meander between farms and factories selling honey, cheese, berries and salmon. Another nearby attraction is Mole Creek Karst National Park, where you can tour the spectacular limestone caves, discovering glow worm displays and subterranean streams and caverns. There is so much to discover in and around Liffey Falls and its tranquil tract of nature.

Wineglass Bay Tasmania

On the eastern side of the Freycinet Peninsula there are soaring sea cliffs, secluded coves, and dramatic ocean beaches. The remarkable pink granite peaks known as The Hazards guard the peninsula at its northern end, and to the south is uninhabited Schouten Island.

Wineglass Bay is just a short walk from the camping grounds at Coles Bay. The walk to Wineglass Bay involves an uphill climb through The Hazards to a rocky lookout, followed by a downhill walk to the beach. It takes around two hours to walk to Wineglass Bay from the entrance of the Freycinet National Park.

The award winning Freycinet Experience Walk is a four-day guided walk covering the entire length of the peninsula including Wineglass Bay. The peninsula was home to the Oyster Bay Tribe of Tasmanian Aborigines for at least 20,000 years. Some of the tracks are paths walked by the area's original Aboriginal inhabitants thousands of years ago. Learn about the French explorers who first discovered this paradise. Watch for wildlifeincluding white-bellied sea-eagles, quolls, wallabies, wombats and Tasmanian devils. Set off on a scenic cruise where you might be lucky enough to see a pod of dolphins or migrating whales in season. Sandwiched between Mexico, Guatemala and the shimmering Caribbean Sea, Belize occupies a slice of paradise that is packed with culture, wildlife and a wondrous selection of historical sites. Much of the mainland remains swathed in jungle, where the vestiges of ancient cities punctuate verdant forest canopies. Caracol is the most famous. Its crumbling temples and stone pyramids stand as powerful reminders of the Maya civilisation.

The history is fascinating for sure, but most people visit Belize to see its natural wonders and admirable conservation work; the Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary was the first jaguar sanctuary in the world; the island of Half Moon Caye has been entirely dedicated to the conservation of birds; and the protected Belize Barrier Reef harbours an incredible array of marine life. Visitors can swim with sharks and stingrays along colourful walls of coral, or explore the Blue Hole, renowned as one of the world’s best dive sites. Numbering fewer than 335,000, Belizeans have surprisingly diverse roots: the country is a melting pot of Creole, Garifuna, Mestizo, Spanish, Maya, English, Mennonite, Lebanese, Chinese and East Indian heritage. Racial harmony, religious tolerance and a relatively peaceful political culture, have allowed these different elements to blend successfully and have given Belize a reputation as a friendly, laidback destination.

Belize’s towns and cities are small and, on the whole, pleasantly unexciting. San Ignacio is a charming enough stop-off for those disappearing into the jungle and Punta Gorda offers insightful home stays with some of the country’s last remaining indigenous communities. The somewhat bland capital, Belmopan, however, is hardly worth going out your way for and bustling Belize City, though energetic and ruggedly charming, is used largely as a gateway to the islands. And what exquisite islands they are. Caye Caulker, Ambergris Caye, Cayo Espanto (to name a few) are everything you expect from the Caribbean and more; swaying palms, pellucid waters, sandy shores, ramshackle beach bars and charming restaurants. All that’s missing are the crowds. Go figure.

Things to see and do...

Caracol Ruins

The archaeological site of Caracol is one of Belize’s remarkably well-preserved Mayan sites. This one is noteworthy because of transport there: due to its proximity to the Guatemalan border, it is strongly advised to travel there in police convoy, flying over the bumpy terrain, for tourist safety.

Actun Tunichil Muknal Cave

A short drive from San Ignacio, visiting Actun Tunichil Muknal Cave is a full day of jungle hiking followed by wading, swimming and climbing through a vast ancient cave used by the Mayans for sacrifice to the gods. This trip is not for the claustrophobic or faint-hearted, but it is possibly the best thing to do in Belize.

Ancient ruins

Wander through the exquisitely carved Xunantunich ruins, considered some of the most beautiful and intricate in the Mayan world. The ruins date from AD200 to 900 and are found close to the Guatemalan border.

Blue Hole

Plummet into the depths of the Blue Hole: the startlingly vivid blue sinkhole measures 300m (1,000ft) across and over 120m (400ft) deep and is considered one of the best dive sites in the world. Take plenty of water and cover for your head – the boat trip out there is a long one.

Caye Caulker

The cayes off the coast are the reason most people visit Belize, and Caye Caulker is the quiet, laid-back one. Windsurfing or kite-surfing here is magic: the water is so clear beneath, it may be possible to spot fish, stingrays and even dolphins. The best wind conditions usually occur from February to June.

Belize’s most popular spot, Ambergris is the place to go for diving and snorkelling. The reefs and diving spots here are world class. It also has the most nightlife in the country and excellent seafood. The main town here is San Pedro, made famous in Madonna’s ‘La Isla Bonita’.

Mount Kilimanjaro

It is an amazing experience to reach the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. To stand under the signpost for the mandatory picture (for the "Look! I made it! show-&-tell when you come home), enjoying the view of Afica, and knowing that in spite of the cold, the thin air, and the long climb through the night, you have made it to top, is beyond words.

Mount Kilimanjaro is the tallest mountain in Africa, and the worlds highest free-standing mountain with its's 5,895 meters above sea level (19 341 ft). Kilimanjaro is an old vulcano, and consists of three volcano cones; Kibo (5895 m) Mawenzi (5149m) and Shira (3962m). Uhuru Peak is the highest point and lies on the rim of the Kibo crater. The whole mountain is a National Park and there is a wide array of plant and wildlife there. Many species can only be found on here, for example the Kilimanjaro Impatiens, a pretty little flower that grows in the jungle on the mountain floor. Given its proximity to the Equator, and it's hight, climbers can experience 4 different vegetation sones, from jungle forest, through moorland tod alpine desert, with the ice cap at the very top.

Hans Mayer is recognised as he first European to reach the top of Kilimanjaro in 1889. He was not the last. Every year 20 000 people from all over the world come to Mount Kilimanjaro to try and reach the summit, and it has become big business for the locals. Several thousand people work as guides and porters, in addition to the many park rangers that take care of the Naional Park.

Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro is not easy, though it is the highest mountain one can summit without climbing gear. There are 6 official routes, with various lengths and difficulty level. Marangu route is the shortest (5-6 days), and the only one with huts for accomadation. The other routes are longer, and you sleep in tents. Some are pretty demanding, but the longer approach gives you more time to acclimatise you to the height, wich improves your chance of making the summit.

The climb is technically not difficult, but the altitude, the cold and the occationally strong wind makes it a demanding and potentially dangerous climb. One needs to be well prepared, and bring the right gear. Altitude sickness is the biggest danger, it is estimated that about 10 people die on the mountain every year of it. However, for most people it is a matter of walking slowly, taking ones time to acclimatise and drinking lots of water, and going back down, if one does'nt get better.

When to Travel

The Bazaruto Archipelago is warm and sunny year round with temperatures averaging 25° C in the winter months (May – August) and over 30° C in the summer months (December - March). Rain is possible from November to March, usually in short bursts. The sea temperature varies with the seasons and currents, and ranges between 22° C and 32° C.

How to get there

It is an 8-hour 30-minute international flight, 2-hour international flight, Azura operates a state of the art 4 seater Eurocopter helicopter for the transfers from Vilanculos to Benguerra Island. The flying time is approx 10 minutes, and will connect with arriving/departing flights. Alternatively guests can transfer by road and speedboat if flying is undesirable. Transfer time is 15 minutes by minibus to the port, then 25-45 minutes by boat depending on sea conditions.

The Reed Flute Cave China

The Reed Flute Cave With location five kilometers northwest of the downtown of Guilin is a natural cave carved out of the karst limestone mountains over millions of years, and has been one of Guilin’s most famous attractions for over 1200 years. The cave got its name from the verdant reeds growing outside, which can be made into melodious flutes. Inside this water-eroded cave is a spectacular world of various stalactites, stalagmites, stone pillars and rock formations created by carbonate deposition and illuminated by multi-colored lighting to create a surreal experience.

240-meter-long cave is lined with interesting rock shapes and formations resembling all kinds of strange things. Many of the formations have taken on recognizable shapes of mythological creatures, or natural images. There are formations that look like vegetables and one even looks like the Statue of Liberty.

Inside, there are more than 70 inscriptions written in ink, which can be dated back as far as 792 AD in the Tang Dynasty. They are travelogues and poems writing by Tang Dynasty literati who visited the cave. These aged inscriptions tell us that it has been an attraction in Guilin since ancient times.

The cave was almost forgotten for a thousand years, before it was rediscovered in the 1940s by a group of refugees fleeing the Japanese troops. The Reed Flute Cave is now marked on almost all travel itineraries. Each rock formation has been given a poetic name by the Chinese. For instance, you have the Crystal Palace, the Virgin Forest, Dragon Pagoda, and the Flower Mountain.

Despite this evidence of popularity during ancient times, the Reed Flute cave was almost completely forgotten for a thousand years before its rediscovery in the 1940’s by a group of refugees, fleeing Japanese troops. Twenty years later, the cave was formally opened to the public (1962). The enormous ‘Crystal Palace of the Dragon King’ chamber, was once used as a bomb shelter, providing capacity for approximately 1000 people.

A legend surrounds the giant white slab of rock that hangs from the ‘Crystal Palace of the Dragon King’ chamber. It is said to be the Dragon Kings needle, used as a weapon by his enemy, the Monkey King. The Monkey King used the needle to destroy the Dragons army of jellyfish and snails, leaving their petrified remains scattered around the floor of the cave.
