Yesterday I drove about 40 minutes to the Dosewallips river on the Olympic peninsula. Wanted to get in a day hike and get some practice with my camera. Hoping for a herd of elk, which this area is known for, something else caught my eye as I drove slowly up the forest service road. It was something I had wanted to witness ever since returning to Washington. Salmon at the end of their cycle, bruised, scarred and beaten, color changed to dark and orange. So for an hour or so, I was a wildlife photographer, sneaking down the embankment, hiding behind a tree, setting up the tripod. The results weren't as good as I was hoping for, but of course I enjoyed myself immensely.

One of the highlights of cruising BC this summer was meeting a man of many talents, Bill Proctor. If you visit Echo Bay, then you are probably going to go see Billy's Museum.
A short walk through the woods will get you there. We could have gone by dinghy, but any chance to walk in this water world is not to be missed. Just past the abandon school house his home sits above a nice cove where he docks his boat.

There is a haulout where a fisherman was working on his prop. Bill showed us around the museum and there was a book store. He has co-author a couple of books, "Full Moon, Flood Tide" and "The Heart of the Raincoast; A Life Story". We purchased these and he autographed them for us. The first book allowed us to get a little history of each bay, cove and inlet as we dropped anchor. Logging, gold prospectors, fisherman, murder and mayhem. From the 30's on, it is a great read on the hard life and the rewards of living in a world where boats are the only means of practical transportation. Link here for Bill's take on the Ahta River. One of our favorite anchorages on the Bond Sound.
Laura had foot surgery today and unlike her right foot that was fixed in January, this time the doc kept her overnight for observation. She is fine, but of course it hurts mucho and they want to fine tune her pain meds. We were up at the crack of dawn, actually precrack, and took the ferry over to Seattle from our new digs on Agate Pass near Poulsbo. The info I have is second hand from another blog. They lost what is reported to be a big dog, which as you can see, deserved a marker on the spot. We found this on a midden beach at Blunden Harbour. They threw sticks and even a log, the cougar would not let go. A very clear reminder it is a wild place. Visitors like us are discouraged by Customs in Canada to bring firearms, especially hand guns. You can do it, but it is a hassle at the border. No guns on our boat, though I would not mind having one when meeting the predators of the wild. Especially a Grizzly, though the Black Bear probably is just as dangerous. When we go ashore, the flare gun and an air horn goes with us. Maybe better than nothing, don'tcha think? On a more serious news report a family leaving a beach at a park on Vancouver island had their 3 yr old attacked by a cougar. The child was saved. Not sure of the injury. Now that is very scary.
Art?

There was some classic and there was some far out, something for everybody I guess. I might draw the line at fine china, put your potatoes and pot roast on it and chow down, so why is there a whole section in SAM dedicated to dishes. Well we did enjoy, as most of the exhibits were very interesting.
HERBC

Laura and I went for a drive up to Mt Rainier last weekend. The sign said "View Point Ahead". A chance to see the great mountain. Wow what a view, three guys setting up for a moon shot without the rocket. We definitely got an eyeful. Had to laugh.

For a nice place to stay in Westport, click here. We stayed upstairs in one of the cottages. It was newly remodeled, and very roomy. Huge jacuzzi bath and a king bed. There is some serious TLC happening here and the main house was a great place to have a cup of coffee. With a 1898 vibe and some some Getz on the stereo, I was happy happy. Check it out.
