Monolithic rock-cut temple: Bhairavakona

Bhairavakona is the pilgrim centre, located in Ambavaram Kothapalli village, Chandra sekara puram (also known as CS Puram) mandal of Prakasam district, 120 km from Ongole. It borders Sri Potti Sri Ramulu Nellore and Kadapa districts.

The main attractions of Bhairavakona, , are the ancient rock-cut cave temples and scenic beauty since it lies in Nallamala Forest and Hills range.

The main deity is lord Bhareveswara. And the goddess is Trimukadurga devi. Fiery Lord Bhairava is the “Kshetrapalaka'' for the temple at the revered hill with as many as 101 Shivalingams.

An interesting feature of this temple is 8 temples are carved out of one rock and Lord Shiva appears in 8 different forms. Lord Shiva appears in eight forms - Shashinaga, Rudra, Visweswara, Nagarikeswara, Bhargeswara, Rameswara, Mallikarjuna and Pakshamalika Linga.

The ancient temples carved in a hill at Bhairavakona attract many people on Karthika Pournami and Shivarathri. An interesting feature that attracts devotees to Bhairavakona is that moonlight falls on the idol of godess Durgadevi on the day of Karthika Pournami and Maha Shivaratri.

Devotees in large numbers from the districts of Prakasam, Potti Sriramulu Nellore and YSR Kadapa and also from neighbouring Tamil Nadu and Karnataka visit the hill temple for worshipping the divine after a bath in the waterfalls.

WATERFALLS

There is a beautiful waterfall at Bhairavakona, adjacent to the rock-cut caves. The fall will flow throughout the year. The water from the falls flows down from 200 meters above and flows about 3 feet below through the Durga Devi temple.

The water from the falls which originates from Lingala Penta flows for over 5 kms and reaches Lakshmi, Parvathi and Saraswathi lake. It further flows and reaches Triveni Sangamam and Chitrakota lakes and then passes in front of the diety.

The water flowing through several medicinal plants on the way is also known to have a healing touch to several ailments.

HISTORY:

Legend says that Kala Bhairava once prevailed this region and from then this place was called as Bhairava Kona.

The temples date back to 7^th to 8^th AD by archaeologists. The architectural style of temples is similar to the temples that were constructed during the Pallava Dynasty. This dynasty ruled Tamil Nadu and made it into prosperous region. Many of the temples have Shivalingas as well as small images of Lord Shiva and other Hindu Gods and Goddesses.

Breathtaking scenery all around, the jaw dropping waterfalls, chirping of the birds and the wild life all around all add to the glory of this place.

HOW TO REACH:

Bhairavakona is well connected by buses to all the near by villages. One getting there should first reach the Ambavaram-kothapalli village and from there buses to Bhairavakona will be running continuously from morning to evening.
There is no train service to Bhairavakona, however you can reach Ongole, Kavali, Nellore or Kadapa, Yerraguntla railway stations.

Niagra of India: Hogenakkal water falls

Hogenakkal Falls is a waterfall in South India on the river Kaveri. It is located in the Dharmapuri district of the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The water drops from an elevation of about 65 feet at its highest point and from 15 feet at its lowest point.

The falls is a quiet and beautiful waterfall and is a good picnic spot. It is coined as Niagra of India due to the high waterfall intensity. Its water is believed to have curative powers as the Kaveri (Cauvery) river flows through a forest of herbs on its journey to Hogenakkal.

The Carbonatite rocks found near the waterfall are one of the oldest in the world. This is also the site of a proposed project to generate drinking water.

MEANING OF THE HOGENAKKAL:

The word Hogenakkal is formed of two Kannada words hoge and kal. When the water falls on the rocks it appears as if hoge (smoke) is emanating from the top of the kal (rock) because of the force of the water, hence Hogenakkal (smoking rocks). It is also called as Marikottayam by the people of Tamil Nadu.

The Hogenakkal Falls is famous for its medicinal baths and boating in round bamboo boats with hides (coracles). However boating is allowed only during dry season when the waterfalls aren’t so strong. The coracles or circular basket boats are propelled by a single paddle making them unique. In local languages these boats are called Parisal, Teppa or Harigolu.

The area around the Hogenakkal Falls remains crowded during peak season and there are stalls on the way to the falls. Freshly caught fish, snacks, water are sold by various vendors. Some stalls cook fresh fishes for their customers.

One can try getting a massage from the famed Hogenakkal masseurs. The local malishkarans or the mystic masseurs are armed with oils, powders and esoteric knowledge about the different massage points in the human body. There are also a few women masseurs. The massage offered here is a nice experience for the visitors.

BEST TIME TO VISIT:

The best time to visit the Hogenakkal Falls is just after the monsoons, when it is in full torrent. However, some tourists choose to visit the place in off-season to avoid the crowd.

Hogenakkal is 140km from Bangalore and 44 kms from Dharmapuri town. From Dharmapuri you will get direct bus to Hogenakkal.

The thriving Jog falls

Jog Falls in Karnataka is the second-highest plunge waterfall in India. It is located near Sagara in Shimoga, Kannada state.

The waterfall is locally known as Geruoppe Falls, Gersoppa Falls and Jogada Gundi. The word ‘Jog’ is a Kannada word, which means falls. It is said that the word ‘Jog’ is derived from the word Javalu, which means water coming out forming wetlands.

Its height is 253 m and width is 472 m. Its formed by the Sharavati river when it splits in to four parts and jumps from the Deccan plateau to the plains. The four parts are called Raja, Rocket, Roarer and Rani. Associated with the falls is the Lingamakki dam and hydroelectric power station visioned by Sri M Vishveshwarayya.

There are many waterfalls in Asia - and also in India - which drop from a higher altitude. But, unlike most of such falls, Jog Falls is untiered, i.e., it drops directly and does not stream on to rocks. Thus, it can be described as the First-highest untiered waterfall in India.

During summers the waterfall will reduce to small narrow streams while during monsoon and winters it will be roaring with water. The beauty of the waterfalls is enhanced by the lush green surroundings, which provides a scenic backdrop to the falls. The falls will be spectacular if the water falling down was more.

Visitors can hike down to the base of the falls and can take a plunge in the water. There are several points from where you can view the beauty of the Jog falls. Watkins platform is one of the popular points to view the falls. One can also get scenic look of the falls from the rock outcrop near Bombay Bungalow. The area near the falls is also ideal for trekking.

Other places to visit near the falls are the Swarna Nadi riverbank, the Sharavathi valley, the Dabbe falls, Linganamakki Dam, Tunga Anicut Dam, Thyvare Koppa Lion and Tiger reserve and Sharavati River.

BEST TIME TO VISIT:

The best season to visit Jog falls is the monsoons i.e., August and September are the best months to visit. It is the ideal time to see the waterfall. The water falls with great force that it creates a cloud of vapour. October to January is also fine. But during summer the water will be very less.

FOOD:

There are only a handful number of hotels and lodges at the falls.

WHERE TO STAY

There are plenty of accommodation options near Jog Falls in Shimoga. One can find many budget and mid-range hotels. During season its advisable to book in advance and come i.e., in the months of August to December. One can also opt to stay at state run tourist hotels.

HOW TO REACH?

The road distance is 385 kms from Bangalore and 160 km from Hubli city.
Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation KSRTC runs one Rajahamsa till the waterfall. Alternatively one can reach Shimoga by direct KSRTC or Railway services from Bangalore. From Shimoga private and KSRTC buses are available till the falls.

Lepakshi - A wonderful piece of architecture

The historic town of Lepakshi, located in Anantpur District of Andhra Pradesh particularly famous for its Vijaynagar style temples, holds a mirror to the past. The handicrafts of Lepakshi are also quite popular among women all over the country.

It is 15 km east of Hindupur and about 120 km north of Bangalore. It’s a revitalizing trip for those who believe in heritage sites, for those who marvel at the art of our ancestors, and those willing to get away from the routine multiple-destination tourist routes.

ETYMOLOGY:

This gem of a temple is so beautiful that you have to be made of stone to not be awed by it. When Sita was abducted by Ravana, the mythical bird Jatayu fought with Ravana right here. Ravana cut off its wing then Jatayu lay here, injured. When Sri Rama reached the spot, he saw the bird and said compassionately, “le, pakshi” – ‘rise, bird in Telugu. Then the bird rose. Hence the name Lepakshi.

ABOUT TEMPLE:

At the height of its fame during the 16^th century, Lepakshi was a centre of pilgrimage and trade.

This temple is a notable example of the Vijayanagar style of architecture. The temple of Veerabhadra is mention in 'Skandapurana' as one of the 108 important 'Shaiva Kshetras'.

The temple is built on a low, rocky hill called Kurmasailam - meaning tortoise hill in Telugu, after the shape of the hill.

Legend has it that the temple of Veerabhadra was constructed by Saint 'Agastya' himself. But as per history it was built in the mid-16th century by brothers Viranna and Virupanna, Vijayanagara governors of Penukonda. Virupanna, as the king's treasurer, had vast sums at his disposal, which he spent on making Lepakshi a magnificent temple.

The temple’s main deity is Veerabhadra, the fiery god created by Shiva in his rage after the Daksha Yagna and the immolation of Parvathi.

The temple has a huge complex where three shrines dedicated to Lord Shiva, Lord Vishnu and Lord Virabhadra. Lord Virabhadra is the wrathful manifestation form of Shiva, the patron deity of the Nayak rulers.

On the walls of this temple, there are several stories like Mahabharata, Ramayana etc are sculpted. Also on the roof there are so many beautiful paintings have been coloured using vegetable & natural dyes.

WHAT TO SEE:

Nandhi:

A huge Nandi (bull) made out of single granite stone near the Veerabhadra temple carved out of a monolith is yet another remarkable feature. At 27ft in length and 15ft in height, it is a colossal structure, reputedly India’s biggest monolithic Nandi.

The Nandi positioned as one foot has waiting to get up, ears open – for the lord Shiva has to call the bull, so it is waiting to serve him.

Naga-lingam:

Behind the temple, it is a massive Naga (snake) with three coils and seven hoods. It forms a sheltering canopy over a black granite Shivalingam. It’s reckoned by many as the largest Nagalinga in India.

It is said that during lunch break, a group of brothers waited outside the kitchen at this spot, as their mother hurried to cook their meal. Not wanting to waste their time waiting, they built this in the 30 minutes that it took their mother to prepare the food.

Chaviti Vinayakudu:

Once you reach the temple’s outer enclosure, you will see a mammoth Ganesha (Vinayaka) - hewn in stone and leaning against a rock.

Hanging Pillar:

This temple also famed Hanging Column or Pillar . The pillar which does not rest on the ground fully, one can passed the twig slowly under the pillar. From one end to the other!

There are about 70 pillars at this fabulous 16^th century temple. This one is the best known and a tribute to the engineering genius of ancient and medieval India’s temple builders. However, it is a bit dislodged from its original position - it is said that during the British era, a British engineer tried to move it in an unsuccessful attempt to uncover the secret of its support. In doing so, they moved it slightly. That led to many other pillars and beams around re-aligning themselves. Scared that the temple would collapse, they let it be and there were no further investigations. It was obvious to them that this was a very crucial column, probably one of the main supports.

Kalyana mandapam:

The Kalyana Mandapam or marriage hall is another hall known for its artistic beauty. Among the many eye-catchers in this temple, the frieze of geese with lotus stalks in their beaks stands out.

The marriage hall is not completed. Had Virupanna lift to complete this marriage hall, it would had been the most celebrate of its kind.

Mural Paintings:

It contains some of the finest sculpture of the period and has the earliest preserved cycle of mural paintings in the Vijayanagara style. It is said that the 24 by 14 ft fresco of Veerabhadra on the ceiling before the main sanctum sanctorum is the largest in India of any single figure. The rest of the frescoes are also beautiful and show an impressive attention to detail with colours strikingly contrasted - black limework against an orange-red background with some green, white, black, and shades of ochre-gold and brown mostly applied to a stucco surface specially treated with lime.

Sita Amma Padam:

There is a large footprint on the stone in the temple compound supposedly Godess Durga. Some call it 'Durga Paadam' or 'Seethamma paadam'.

There is intresting story about this footprint. When godess Sita devi was taken over by Ravana, Jataayu came to save Sita and fought with Ravana. While Jataayu was wounded, Sita kept her feet on the ground and water started to flow from that place. This water saved Jataayu till Lord Rama came. Local people say, water will never get dried in this place throughout the year.

Eyes of Virupanna:

One more famous spot in this temple is "Eyes of Virupanna". As the history says, Virupanna use money from treasury to use build this massive temple when the Vijayanagara king away. When the king retuned, he find his treasury is empty without his permission and the king ordered to make him blind. When Virupanna heard this, he decided to carry out the task himself and plucked his own eyes and throw at this temple walls. Till date one can find those blood scars on the western wall of the inner enclosure.

If you have time, check out nearby Dharmavaram, the well-known silk weaving centre, and Hindupur and surrounding villages where, elegant cottons are woven.

BEST TIME TO VISIT

Summers are uncomfortably hot and humid. The best time therefore to visit Lepakshi is between November and March.

By Road:

Lepakshi is 480 km from Hyderabad. It is 120 km from Bangalore. On the way to Hyderabad from Bangalore, you have to take about 16kms on the left to reach Lepakshi from Hindupur.

By Rail:

The nearest railway station in Hindupur. Autos and buses ply to Lepakshi from here.

By Air:

Bangalore International Airport is the nearest airport.

Wonderful Wayanad in Kerala

Wayanad is a bright green mountainous region in north-east Kerala, which stretches for over 2,000 square kilometers along the Western Ghats. It has a great deal of scenic appeal. Abundant coconut palms, thick forests, coffee and tea plantations, paddy fields, and lofty peaks form the landscape. Due to the nature of its terrain, the area also has much to offer adventure enthusiasts. Wayanad is explicitly beautiful with mist clad mountains, intense forests and fertile green plantations.Wildlife aficionados and nature lovers will find Wayanad wildlife sanctuaries as the right place of visit. The place enjoys a pleasant climate the whole year.

The region was known as Mayakshetra (Maya's land) in the earliest records. Mayakshetra evolved into Mayanad and finally to Wayanad. According to Folk etymology; Wayanad is a derivative of the term Vayal Nadu, where Vayal means Paddy fields and Nadu the land, comprising it to indicate a land of paddy fields. There are many indigenous tribals in this area.

HISTORY:

According to archaeological evidence, the Wayanad forests have been inhabited for more than 3,000 years. Historians are of the view that human settlement existed in these parts for at least ten centuries before Christ. Much evidences of New Stone Age civilisation can be seen in the hills throughout the present day Wayanad district. The two caves of Ampukuthimala, with pictures on their walls and pictorial writings, speak volumes of a bygone civilisation. The recorded history of this district exists only from the 18^th century onward. Agriculture Cultivation started broadly after 1900 A.D onwards.

According to the history, Wayanad was ruled by the Veda tribes, it was then taken by Pazhassi Rajas, and later Hyderali conquered Wayanad. When Tipu took over, he handed it to British. It was the British who introduced cash crops, laid roads and developed Wayanad significantly.

After the Independence of India, when the State of Kerala came into being in November 1956, Wayanad was part of Kannur district. Later, south Wayanad was added to Kozhikode district. To fulfil the aspirations of the people of Wayanad for development, North Wayanad and South Wayanad were carved out and joined together to form the present district of Wayanad. This district came into being on 1^st November 1980 as one the twelve districts of Kerala, consisting of three taluks; Vythiri, Mananthavady, and Sulthan Bathery.

Snuggled amidst the Western Ghats Mountains, Wayanad is one of the exquisite hill stations of Kerala. It is a revenue state due to foreign exchange of cash crops such as vanilla, tea, coffee, pepper, cardamom and many other condiments. Wayanad shelters endangered species as it has an amazing range of flora and fauna. Other wildlife that roam the forests here include sambar and spotted dear, Indian bison, langur monkeys and, drumroll, occasionally tigers.

The prominent festivals such as Onam, Maha shivaratri and Vishu display eternal harmony.

Kunchikal Falls are located near Agumbe in Shimoga district of state of Karnataka. Agumbe valley is among the places in India that receive very heavy rainfall and it has the only permanent rain forest research station in India. The Kunchikal falls are formed by Varahi river and lies in the Western Ghats. The Ghats is well famous for its Giant Indian squirrel, Indian bullfrog and other unique birds, rare reptiles and bizarre wild animals. Kunchikal falls are the primary source of one of the hydro electric projects in Karnataka.

The Barehipani Falls is located in the core area of Simlipal National Park in Mayurbhanj district in the tribal state Orissa. The waterfall is situated on the Budhabalanga River flowing over the Meghasan mountain. This waterfall is second highest waterfalls of India with a height of 1,309 feet (399 metres). This two-tiered waterfall is originating near the Bay of Bengal. The tallest single drop is 850 feets (259 metres). The nearest railway station is at Baripada. The Joranda Falls is located nearby.

3) Langshiang Falls:

The Langshiang Falls is located near the village of Sangriang, 24 kilometres from Nongstoin, in West Khasi hills district in the Indian state of Meghalaya. It can also be seen from Mawpon village. The total height of the falls is generally quoted at around 1,106 feets (337 metres). Considering the height, it is the third highest waterfalls in India. Nongkhnum Island, the biggest river island in Meghalaya is 10 kilomsetres from Langshiang Falls.

4) Nohkalikai Falls:

The Nohkalikai falls is one of the tallest waterfalls in India. The 4^th highest waterfalls in India with a height of1100 feet (335 metres). The waterfall is located near Cherrapunji, one of the wettest places on Earth. Cherrapunji is very famous for Hills, rainfall, living bridges and oranges. The other highest and popular waterfalls in Meghalaya are Nohsngithiang falls and Kynrem falls, These are also counted in top 10 highest water falls in India. Nohkalikai Falls are fed by the rainwater collected on the summit of comparatively small plateau and decrease in power during the dry season in December - February. Below the falls there has formed a plunge pool with unusual green colored water.

Name of the falls (in Khasi language - "Jump of Ka Likai") is linked to a legend about local women Likai who after family tragedy became insane and jumped off the cliff next to the falls. A brief summary of the tragic legend is as follows: A woman named Ka Likai remarries. But the new husband is jealous of her love for her daughter. While Ka Likai is out working, her new husband kills the daughter and cooks her flesh into a meal. The woman comes home and asks her husband if he knows where the daughter is. He says no, but before she goes out looking, she should have something to eat. After eating, she finds her daughter's fingers in the betel-nut basket. In despair, the woman threw herself off this cliff giving the falls its name: "Fall of Ka Likai"

5) Nohsngithiang Falls:

The Nohsngithiang Falls is also known as the Seven Sisters Waterfalls and the Mawsmai Falls. It is located 1 kilometer south of Mawsmai village in East Khasi Hills district in the Indian state of Meghalaya. This is the 5^th highest waterfalls in India with 1,033 feet (315 metres) height and has an average width of 230 feets (70 metres).

It is a seven-segmented waterfall, which plunges over the top of limestone cliffs of the Khasi Hills. The falls only flow during the rainy season. In full spate, the segments stretch most of the way along the cliff. The waterfalls get illuminated by the sun from dawn to sunset. The vibrant colours of the setting sun on the waterfalls make it beautiful to behold.

In the Sohra area, there are several waterfalls because of the heavy rainfall The cascading Nohsngithiang waterfalls at Mawsmai, the hauntingly beautiful Nohkalikai Falls, and the Dain Thlen Falls. The Jaintia Hills and the Garo Hills too have their share of beautiful waterfalls, notably the Tyrchi Falls en route to Jowai and the Pelga Falls near Tura in Garo Hills.

6) Dudhsagar Falls:

The Dudhsagar Falls or the Sea of Milk (literally meaning The mihir & Chandiveera Sea of Milk) is a tiered waterfall located on the Mandovi River in the state of Goa. It is 60 km from Panaji. Dudhsagar is the 6^th highest waterfall in India. This is a four tiered waterfall with a total height of 1020 feets (310 meters) and an average width of 100 feets (30 meters).

The water plummets hundreds of feet in large volumes during the monsoon season, forming one of the most spectacular natural phenomena in Goa. 7) Agaya Gangai:

Agaya Gangai waterfalls is located in Kolli Hills of the Eastern Ghats. It is in fact a multi-tiered waterfall and one can see different shades of this waterfall through its various tiers from different view points. Panchanathi, a jungle stream cascades down as the Agaya Gangai (Ganges of Sky), near the Arapaleeswarar temple atop the Kolli Hills in Namakkal district, Tamil Nadu. It is 1007 feet (307 meters) waterfall of the river Aiyaru situated close to Arapaleeswarar temple. It is located in a valley that is surrounded by mountains on all sides. The entire terrain is green and hence the temperatures are slightly lower than outside. Though, the humidity can get slightly high.

Regular buses ply from Namakkal and Salem to the Kolli Hills. A drive through ghat road from Karavalli, the village on the foothills, to Kolli Hills. Enroute, one can explore the beauty of the valley where the peaks are surrounded by green vegetation. It is also said that Paambaati Siddhar's cave is situated near the Agaya Gangai.

The Kynrem Falls is located 12 kilometres from Cherrapunji in East Khasi Hills district in the Indian state of Meghalaya. It is situated inside the Thangkharang Park. It is the 8^th highest waterfalls in India. The Kynrem Falls is a three-tiered waterfalls, with water falling from a height of 1,001 feets (305 metres).

9) Meenmutty Falls:

Meenmutty Falls is located 29 km near the town of Kalpetta in Wayanad District in the state of Kerala, India. It is a three-tiered waterfall with a height of 980 feets (300 meters). Meenmutty Falls, the largest and most spectacular waterfall in the Wayanad District, is a 2 km hike though the jungle from the main Ooty Road. It is Kerala's tallest waterfall and the one most unspoiled in its natural setting. Each of its three tiers requires a separate hike through a moist, deciduous forest. The path is quiet dangerous and tiresome, but the waterfalls are worth it.

10) Thalaiyar Falls:

Thalaiyar waterfalls also known as Rat Tail Falls is located in the Palani Hills of Dindigul District, Tamil Nadu State, India. It is 975 feet (297 metre) tall and is the second highest waterfall in Tamil Nadu. The widest falls is very popular for its dangerous place and dark caves. The spot is still unexplored because there is no road to reach here.

On a clear day Rat Tail Falls is visible from the Dum Dum Rock viewpoint on the Batalugundu-Kodaikanal Ghat Road, 3.6 kilometres away to the west. It appears across the valley as a long thin white strip of cascading water on a background of black rock cliff face that juts out of the foothills. The very edge at the top of the Falls has a low concrete wall on either side concentrating the flow of water to focus the falls into a better rat tail shape. One can walk along the wall and get near the center of the falls. Just below one wall is a large flat rock about 5 feet wide. One can get down to the edge of the rock to look directly straight down to see a little river at the bottom continuing placidly through the forest. Looking back up to the side, one can watch the water in freefall, mostly silent. The noise of the crashing water below doesn't rise up. The only noise is the water pushing around the stone walls, and some smaller falls just upstream.

A day trip to Shivanasamudra Waterfalls

Shivanasamudra (also called the Shivasamudra) is a small tiny island town located at a distance of 135 km from Bangalore in the Mandya District of the state of Karnataka. Here the River Cauvery meanders to fall into cascading Shivasamudram Falls. The island town of Shivanasamudra divides the river into twin waterfalls. This creates the fourth largest island in the rivers course. A group of ancient temples are located here and there likely was a village.

This is also the site of the hydro-electric power station, set up in the early 1902. It is supposed to be the first of its kind in Asia.

This sparking waterfalls flows through the abundant sylvan forest of Karnataka in Deccan Plateau, plunges 320 feet into gorge into a spate, breaking into a cloud of misty foam. The falls are 893 metres wide.

This is a segmented waterfall. Segmented waterfalls occur where the water flow is broken into two or more channels before dropping over a cliff, resulting in multiple side by side waterfalls.

Cauvery forms many islands throughout its journey from Talacaurvery to Bay of Bengal. One such island is Shivanasamudra. At Shivasamudram, this water falls has twin jumps, the Gagana chukki and the Bara chukki (also spelled Bhara chukki) . Gagana chukki is a large horsetail and Bara chukki is a jagged crashing cascade. Monsoon season makes this waterfall swell to enormous proportion, creating a waterfall perhaps a thousand feet wide. The two falls are really majestic in the monsoon season. The Gaganachukki and Barachukki waterfalls are best visited post monsoon, when there’s abundant water

Apart from the waterfalls the other attraction is the island known as Madhya-Ranga, a renowned pilgrim center. Ranganatha Swamy temple which lies on the Madhya-Ranga Island is very near to Barachukki fall. It is one of the three temples those are built on the islands formed by river Cauvery on its way.

These waterfalls and surrounding hills fall into Cauvery Wild life sanctuary which provides a wide opportunity of excursion, trekking in the forest, rock climbing, bird watching, fishing and other activities for naturalist.

The trekkers need to trek to 2kms through the lush greenery, along the banks of Cauvery to approach the falls. Sitting on the benches provided at the watch tower you can revel the beauty of the river plummet into a spray of mist.

BEST TIME TO VISIT:

June to September (the water falls looks full and gorgeous during this season). The climate is moderate entire year.

By Road:

Shivanasamudram is located 65 kms from Mysore, 135 kms from Bangalore.

GETTING HERE FROM BANGALORE:

There are two ways to reach Shivanasamudra from Bangalore.

You can drive along the Bangalore Mysore highway till Maddur. Immediately after Maddur Bus station, take a left towards Malavalli. Keep going further straight from Malavalli and you'll reach Shivanasamudram. This route would take around 135 kilometers and the road is good upto Maddur, after which, the road condition deteriorates. However, this is the best road to reach Shivanasamudra from Bangalore. A non-stop journey would take approximately 3 hours from Bangalore.
Alternately, one can reach Malavalli from Bangalore via Kanakapura. Take the Kanakapura road from Bangalore which is in good condition. Immediately after Kanakapura, the road branches into two. Take the road which is slightly to the right to reach Malavalli. The left branch leads to Sangama, Makedattu and Chunchi falls. The stretch from Kanakapura to Malavalli is not in good condition and road repair work is in progress at some places. After reaching Malavalli, take a left turn to go to Shivanasamudra. Until sometime back, one would have avoided this route and take the Bangalore-Maddur-Malavalli-Shivanasamudra route instead, as the roads in that route were in better condition. Now the Kanakpura Road had been redone, and this route is shorter and the drive more scenic and enjoyable.

HISTORY:

The Skagit Valley Tulip Festival was officially inaugurated in 1984 by the Mount Vernon Chamber of Commerce directors Jerry Diggerness and Joan Houchen.
In 1994 the Tulip Festival broke off from the Chamber of Commerce and became an entity of its own.

In addition to the flowers, festival visitors enjoy taking in one of the many events and activities that happen only during April. These too are scattered throughout the Skagit Valley. PARKING:

There is plenty of parking at Tulip Town and RoozenGaarde and it is free. Look for the RoozenGaarde logo for other Official Parking areas. These lots are operated by Washington Bulb Company/RoozenGaarde. Parking in official lots is $5 per car; the ticket you receive from the parking attendant will also admit one person to RoozenGaarde on the same day. Private individuals sometimes operate their own lots fees paid to private parties will not work for admission to RoozenGaarde.
The two display gardens, RoozenGaarde and Tulip Town, both have free parking adjacent to their facilities.
Roadside parking is limited due to shoulder conditions and traffic safety regulations.

Trek to Ubbalamadugu Waterfalls (Tada falls)

Ubbalamadugu Waterfalls also called Tada Waterfalls or Kambakam Waterfalls is a beautiful waterfall, located in Tada mandal of Nellore district, Andhra Pradesh. It is situated on the border of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.

The falls are located in a forest called the Kaambakam forest or Sidduliah Kona. It is ideal for hiking, trekking and picnics.

To reach the falls the one must go through the village Varadaiahpalem (just before you enter the town Tada), about 12 km away of which only 7 km is paved. To reach the actual waterfall requires trekking. Local transportation available till Ubbalamadugu Forest Dept outpost (check post). Once you reach the check post, men at the outpost collect Rs.50/- per vehicle or Rs.5/- per a person. Vehicles are allowed till the Vanaruchi canteen.

From there to till you reach the first rest point which is about 3 km from the start, it is a fairly easy trek. You just have to take the pathway which is mostly flat and straight. At the end of this phase after half an hour of trek, you will reach a Siva Temple.

You have to cross a wide and deep stream behind the temple at this point. Depth varies from 5 feet to 2 feet. Be careful while crossing this stream. After this point the trek ahead is not going to be easy. There are lots of submerged boulders.

The trek from this point to the very top takes around two and an half hours and it involves walking through water, climbing man sized boulders, rocks and inclines. There were some arrow marks which will help to reach the final destination. Keep following all this till you reach a place where you think it all ends. On the way to the top, you can see a lot of small pools. Once you reach the extreme end of the originating waterfall, you can really enjoy the beautiful falls, which fall from a height of 100 meters. The water is awesome - cold, clear and pure. The water from the falls on the very top is pure and so you can find drinking water there.

BEST TIME TO VISIT:

The ideal time to visit Ubbalamadugu falls is in between August to December months.

GETTING THERE?

Ubbalamadugu falls is located about 80 km from Chennai and 35 km from Srikalahasti.

First of all, to reach Ubbalamadugu water falls, you need to reach Tada. Once you Tada, you have to go to Varadaiahpalem and choose between walking and taking an auto to the Ubbalamadugu falls.

By Bus:

Buses are available from Chennai, Tirupati, Srikalahasti, Nellore and other parts.

By Train:

Trains from Chennai heading to Sullurpeta from Chennai Central pass via Tada. There is a train every two hours. Major Trains halt at Sullurpeta, from there you can reach Tada or Varadaiahpalem by auto-rickshaw or bus.

By Car:

Tada is located on National Highway No-5.

People coming from Chennai by Bus:

Get Bus no.114 - 'Chennai to Kalahasthi' from Chennai Koyembedu bus stand. It drops you till Varadayya palem, from their autos are available till the check post.

People coming from Chennai by Car:

To reach Tada, cross the Padi junction in Chennai and take the red hills route and join NH-5. Drive for about 60 Km and you will reach Tada. Once you reach Tada, take the left which is right next to the bridge and you will reach Varadiah Palem. Ask the people for directions from here. You have to take a left turn to reach Tada falls and there are absolutely no indications at this point.

People coming from Sulluru peta:

Tada 13 km on the Tada to Tirupathi road. One could take a share-auto or buses run by the APSRTC.

SURROUNDING PLACES TO SEE:

Pulicat Lake is the second largest brackish – water lake or lagoon in India
Chengalamma temple in Sullurpeta. The temple don't have any doors.
Sriharikota houses one of the two satellite launch centres in India.
Tirumala- famous hill town, dedicated to the Lord Venkateswara.
Srikalahasti - ancient Shiva Temple.

CAUTIONS:

It is not advisable to go with your family. There are too many drunks and guy gangs - unsuitable for women only groups or couples.
There are no food/hotels anywhere. Carry biscuits or snacks of your preference.
With limited accommodation available nearby, the best locations to stay are at Srikalahasti or Varadaiahpalem town. Staying in the forest beyond sun set is not advised.
It is accessible only by physically fit people. Carry some first aid like antiseptic cream, bandages etc.
Be very careful as the huge builders will be very slippery because of the continuous flow of water.

Native Americans have lived in the Yellowstone region for at least 11,000 years. Yellowstone National Park spans an area of 2,221,766 acres comprising lakes, canyons, rivers and mountain ranges. There are over 1,100 species of native plants, more than 200 species of exotic plants and over 400 species of Thermos holes.

In 1872, Yellowstone became the world's first national park, the result of great foresight on the part of many people about our eventual need for the solace and beauty of wild places.

GETTING THERE:

The park's size and variety can be overwhelming, which is why many visitors keep coming back. The park is a major destination for all members of the family. By driving the grand loop road, visitors can view the park from the comfort of their vehicle and also take a rest at one of the many roadside picnic areas. You can access two entrances to the National Park from Wyoming.

Mount Rainier National Park is a United States National Park located in southeast Pierce County and northeast Lewis County in Washington state. It was established on March 2, 1899 as the fifth national park in the United States. The park encompasses 236,381 acres including all of Mount Rainier, a 14,410 foot stratovolcano.

MOUNT RAINIER:

Mount Rainier is the most topographically prominent mountain in the contiguous United States and the Cascade Volcanic Arc. An active volcano, Mount Rainier is the most glaciated peak in the contiguous United States, spawning six major rivers.

Mt. Rainier is considered one of the most dangerous volcanoes in the world, and it is also ranked among the top ten most-most dangerous in the world. According to the US Geological Survey’s Volcano Hazards Program, Because of its large amount of glacial ice, Mt. Rainier could potentially produce massive lahars that would threaten the whole Puyallup River valley.

The highest point in the Cascade Range, around it are valleys, waterfalls, subalpine wildflower meadows, old growth forest and more than 25 glaciers. The volcano is often shrouded in clouds that dump enormous amounts of rain and snow on the peak every year and hide it from the crowds that head to the park on weekends.

Mount Rainier has five developed areas: Longmire, Paradise, Ohanapecosh, Sunrise, and Carbon/Mowich. Although the level of development in these areas ranges from basic -little more than a campground and picnic area- to extensive -hotel, restaurant, visitor center, campgrounds and picnic areas- each can serve as a base for exploring the rest of the park.

HIKING & CLIMBING:

Mountain climbing on Mount Rainier is difficult, involving traversing the largest glaciers in the U.S. south of Alaska. Most climbers require two to three days to reach the summit. Climbing teams demand experience in glacier travel, self-rescue, and wilderness travel.

About 1.8 million people visit Mount Rainier National Park each year and 8,000 to 13,000 people attempt the climb each year, about 90% via routes from Camp Muir on the southeast flank. Mount Rainier is a popular peak for mountain climbing with some 10,000 attempts per year with approximately 50% making it to the summit.

Most of the rest ascend Emmons Glacier via Camp Schurman on the northeast. About half of the attempts are successful, with weather and conditioning being the most common reasons for failure.

Hiking, backcountry skiing, photography, and camping are popular in the park. Hiking trails, including the Wonderland Trail (about 150 km circumnavigation of the peak), provide access to the backcountry. Mount Rainier is also popular for winter sports, including snowshoeing and cross-country skiing.

July and August are generally sunny and mild, with the chance of showers. The rest of the year is usually quite rainy, with heavy snowfall from November through April. Raingear is recommended year round. Trails are steep and well maintained in summer and snow covered and difficult to follow in winter.

Winter storms on Mount Rainier are frequent and severe, with high winds, deep snow, and extremely poor visibility. Winter conditions generally exist from mid-September to mid-May. All parties attempting a winter ascent should be experienced in winter mountaineering, avalanche forecasting and rescue, and be familiar with the intended routes of ascent and descent.

Sri Agastheeswaraswami Temple, Thondavada

Thondavada is a historical village in Chandragiri mandal of Chittoor district, Indian state of Andhra Pradesh, at the headwaters of the Swarnamuki River. It is 10 km from the town of Tirupati and is home to a major temple for Lord Siva called Agastheeswar. Previously this place was the ashrama of Agastya Muni.

The temple of Agastheeswara Swami is a sacred shrine that lies at the confluence of three rivers Swarnamukhi, Bhima and Kalyani in Chandragiri mandal.

The Siva lingam in this temple was installed by sage Agasthya and so it is called Agastheeswara lingam.

At the time of installation it is said that all three crore (Mukkoti) gods appeared in this ashrama. So this place is also named “Mukkti”. Rudra here is known as Sri Agasteswara Swami along with his consort Anandavalli. Within the Swarnamuki River that flows around the temple is a mandapa (temple hall) wherein the image of HariHara is carved out of a single piece of stone seven feet tall.

This temple faces east and has almost all parivaradevathas installed in well-built places like Lord Ganesha, Lord Subramaniyam. The temple has three entrances and a grand compound wall. The Dwarapalakas at the entrance of the sanctum sanctorum are beautifully sculptured. They stand tall to add grandeur to the hall. Inside the second prakara, there is a separate shrine for Mother Parvati called here by the name of Vallimata. There is a tank outside the compound for the convenience of visiting pilgrims.

Just opposite the temple and in the middle of the river there is a mandapam built. In this, you can see the beautiful statues of Balaji, Ayyappa, Ganapati, etc., installed. There is also a small shrine of Lord Sri Rama, Sita, Lakshmana and Anjaneya that is built in recent times near the tank. All these places are worth visiting.

The near by village was named Tondavada by the kings of Chandragiri, as it was the place used as a rest house for visitors and keeping elephants also.

HOW TO REACH?

There are buses from Tirupati which is near to Chandragiri.
Driving in your own car or hiring a taxi is the best option.

However, TTD has introduced the Alayadarsanam facility to enable pilgrims to visit the sacred shrines in and around Tirupati. Snoqualmie Falls is one of Washington state’s most popular scenic attractions. The Falls ranks second, just behind Mount Rainier, as the most visited tourist attraction in Washington State. More than 1.5 million visitors come to the Falls every year.

At the falls, you will find a two-acre park, gift shop, observation deck, the Salish Lodge and the famous 270 feet (100 feet higher than Niagara Falls) waterfall. The park and free viewing area are open from dawn until dusk. This beautiful two-acre park is landscaped with native trees and shrubs and comes alive with floral color in the spring. On the paths through the park, you will find several secluded benches and picnic tables for you to further enjoy the serene atmosphere the park offers. It is the perfect environment for a romantic picnic with a loved one. The distance between the free parking lot and the viewing platform is approximately 200 feet and is wheelchair accessible.

For a more up close and personal view, you can hike down the half mile River Trail towards the base of the falls. It is a scenic hike that takes leads you right by an old power plant built in 1910. Just be aware that the grade is very steep, so good walking shoes are recommended.

HISTORY AND NAMING INFORMATION:

Snoqualmie is the English translation and spelling of the Salish "sah-KOH-koh" or "Sdob-dwahibbluh", meaning Moon. The falls were first seen by non-native Washington Hall in 1848 and became a well known tourist destination by 1865. The hydroelectric facility was installed beneath the falls in 1899 and continues operation today, and the Snoqualmie Falls Lodge (now the Salish Lodge) was opened in 1919 after the Sunset Highway was constructed.

Being just 25 miles east of Seattle, Snoqualmie Falls Park is the perfect place to get away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. This is a great place to stop for photos and get drenched in the powerful mist of the falls. It is a place of beauty with its exquisite views and breathtaking waterfall. It is a place that has been sacred for generations to the native people of Snoqualmie Valley. It is a place definitely worth checking out.

Tourists also can hop aboard a Snoqualmie Valley Railroad coach for a 10-mile scenic ride to the top of the falls. The line operates between Snoqualmie and North Bend. The train runs Saturdays and Sundays from April to October, plus Memorial Day, Labor Day and other select weekdays. Train departs multiple times a day throughout the afternoon for the 70-minute excursion.

Mount St. Helens is an active stratovolcano located in Skamania County, Washington, in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States. It is 96 miles south of Seattle, Washington and 50 miles northeast of Portland, Oregon.

Mount St. Helens takes its English name from the British diplomat Lord St Helens, a friend of explorer George Vancouver who made a survey of the area in the late 18th century.

Mount St. Helens, is the most active volcano in the Cascade Range. Its most recent series of eruptions began in 1980 when a large landslide and powerful explosive eruption created a large crater, and ended 6 years later after more than a dozen extrusions of lava built a dome in the crater This volcano is well known for its ash explosions and pyroclastic flows.

Larger, longer lasting eruptions have occurred in the volcano's past and are likely to occur in the future. Although the volcano seems to have returned to a period of quiet, scientists with the U.S. Geological Survey and University of Washington Geophysics Program continue to closely monitor Mount St. Helens for signs of renewed activity.

Mount St. Helens is most notorious for its catastrophic eruption on May 18, 1980, at 8:32 am PDT, the deadliest and most economically destructive volcanic event in the history of the United States. After hundreds of additional earthquakes, steam explosions on March 27 blasted a crater through the volcano's summit ice cap. Within a week the crater had grown to about 1,300 feet in diameter and two giant crack systems crossed the entire summit area. By May 17, more than 10,000 earthquakes had shaken the volcano and the north flank had grown outward at least 450 feet to form a noticeable bulge. Such dramatic deformation of the volcano was strong evidence that molten rock (magma) had risen high into the volcano.

Fifty-seven people were killed; 250 homes, 47 bridges, 15 miles of railways, and 185 miles of highway were destroyed. A massive debris avalanche triggered by an earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale, caused an eruption, reducing the elevation of the mountain's summit from 9,677 ft to 8,365 ft and replacing it with a 1 mile wide horseshoe-shaped crater. The debris avalanche was up to 0.7 cubic miles in volume.

As with most other volcanoes in the Cascade Range, Mount St. Helens is a large eruptive cone consisting of lava rock interlayered with ash, pumice, and other deposits. The mountain includes layers of basalt and andesite through which several domes of dacite lava have erupted. The largest of the dacite domes formed the previous summit, and off its northern flank sat the smaller Goat Rocks dome. Both were destroyed in the 1980 eruption.

Sriharikota (or Sriharikote) Island is a barrier island off the coast of the southern state of Andhra Pradesh in India. Sriharikota Island houses India`s only satellite launch center. The Space Centre, which was popularly known as SHAR (Sriharikota Range), was renamed as 'Satish Dhawan Space Centre SHAR' on 5^th September, 2002, in the fond memory of Prof. Satish Dhawan, former Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).

Satish Dhawan Space Station in Sriharikota has been the site of satellite launch by the Indian space Agency, ISRO. Sriharikota and the surrounding region could very well become Space coast of India.

Even though India is not sending man in space, at least for now, there are several satellite launches every year using multi-stage rockets such as the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV) or the Geo-synchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV).

Sriharikota Island separates the Pulicat Lake from the Bay of Bengal, and is home to the bustling town of Pulicat. It is located at Sri Potti Sri Ramulu Nellore district in Andhra Pradesh.

SHAR covers a total area of about 145 km² with a coastal length of 27 km. Prior to its acquisition for ISRO by the Indian Government, its was a firewood plantation of Eucalyptus and Casuarina trees. This island is affected by both south-westerly and north-easterly monsoons, but heavy rains come only in October and November. Thus many clear days are available for out-door static tests and launchings.

SHAR has the necessary infrastructure for launching satellite into low earth orbit, polar orbit and geostationary transfer orbit. The launch complexes provide complete support for vehicle assembly, fuelling, checkout and launch operations. Apart form these, it has facilities for launching sounding rockets meant for studying the earth’s atmosphere. Achievements include establishment of launch complexes for Sounding rockets, SLV- 3, ASLV and PSLV. Launch complex augmented for GSLV.

As for now, entering the space station is not that easy and tourists who are interested in viewing the satellite launch have to park their vehicles half mile away from the space station.

One can get around this space centre only if you have prior permissions or if you know any of the employees working here. However, you can still watch the launch from outside the entrance of the Satish Dhawan Space Station, half kilometre from the space station in the direction of the Space Station entrance.

Marvellous architecture of Kakatiya's: Ramappa temple, Palampet

Ramappa Temple is located 77 km from Warangal, which served as the ancient capital of the Kakatiya Empire, in the state of Andhra Pradesh. The temple is situated in a valley at the now forgotten Palampet village of Venkatapur Mandal, in the Mulug Taluq of Warangal district. Palampet is located at a distance of 77 km from Warangal.

The Ramappa temple is near the ancient engineering marvel of the 13th century Ramappa tank. The ancient Ramappa tank can be dated back to the period of Kakatiyas. It is a well-conceived tank where a 2000 ft long earthen dam connects a semi circular chain of hills to form a lake. The temple has been described as the "brightest star in the galaxy of medieval temples in the Deccan".

The temple is a place of Shiva worship or Shivalaya, and gets its name from the sculptor chief Ramappa, a Vishwakarma Brahmin Sthapathi of Karnataka State, who built the Shiva’s statue to supersede the preceding deity, Ramalingeswara, and highlight the importance of Shiva as the personal god of the lord Rama. It is probably the only temple in India to be known by the name of the sculptor who builds it.

Ramappa Temple also known as the Ramalingeswara Temple is an ancient temple which was built in the 12th century during the rule of the Kakatiyas. This temple is constructed in the South Indian architectural style and is devoted to Lord Shiva. An inscription dated to the year 1213 serves proof of the temple having been constructed by a General Recherla Rudra, during the reign of the Ganapati Deva. According to history, it took over 40 years to construct the temple.

ARCHITECTURE:

The entire temple complex is enclosed with a compound wall. The temple is approached thorough a royal garden, now just a lawn with tree lined path. The architecture of the temple is a marvellous example of Kakatiya, with the temple designed to be elevated above its surroundings on a high star-shaped platform. This temple also enshrines a 9 ft long statue of Nandi, which is located at the entrance of the temple. The walls of the temple are adorned by carvings that are also found on the pillars and ceilings. Prominent among these are the sculptures of Hindu mythology that cover the temple from its base all the way to its wall panels and ceiling. The roof of the temple is built with ultra light bricks, light enough to float on water. The hall is characterised by exquisite carved pillars that combine light and space so as to complement the well-defined walls and ceiling.

Two other smaller Shiva shrines can also be found on either side of the main temple, although both are in ruins. The entire temple is spread over an area of 5 acres.

The major festival celebrated here is Shivarathri and which day devotees throng to this temple.

By Bus:

There is no direct bus from Warangal to the Ramappa temple. So we need to reach "Mulug" from Warangal (buses are available easily). From there you can catch the bus to "Palampet" or you can take a auto rickshaw as well from here.

The bus will drop you at the point where a separate road is built towards this temple, basically its small village crossing which will lead you to this temple (from road its just 1.5 km).

By Car:

The best way to reach Palampet from warangal is by own mode of transportation. From warangal take NH202 towards Etunagaram, travel for 57 Kms past Mulug till Jangalapalli. Take diversion towards left and travel for 9 Kms towards Ghanapuram. Here you see an arch type entrance welcoming to Ramalingeswara Temple. The temple is 2 Kms from the arch entrance.

By Train:

There is no train to Palampet. One should get down at Warangal and reach Ramappa temple by bus or taxi.

HISTORY OF SEATTLE:

Nelapattu Bird Sanctuary

Nelapattu Bird Sanctuary is a popular outdoor recreational destination in Nellore district, Andhra Pradesh. It is located at Nelapattu village on the East Coast of Andhra Pradesh about 20 km north of Pulicat in the Nellore district.

The bird sanctuary has got the distinction of being one of the largest pelican habitats in Southeast Asia. The total area of the sanctuary is around 400 km. Pulicat Lake near Nellore is the second largest brackish water lake in India and attracts thousands of migratory birds. More than 160 species of birds visit the sanctuary every year. The bird sanctuary is the breeding ground for birds which migrate seasonally from far off places like Antarctica, U.S.A, and China to name a few. This bird sanctuary is particularly famous for Pelicans.

PULICAT LAKE:

Pulicat Lake has been acclaimed as the second largest brackish water lagoon in India. It straddles the border of Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu states on the Coromandal Coast in South India. Along the coast of the Bay of Bengal, the lake attracts large number of migratory water birds. Besides this, it also makes a feeding and breeding ground for a range of aquatic and terrestrial birds.

The barrier island of Sriharikota separates the lake from the Bay of Bengal. The island is home to the Satish Dhawan Space Centre.

FRESHWATER FLOODED FOREST:

There is a fresh water irrigation tank at Nelapattu Bird Sanctuary with Barringtonia plants which can resist inundations for a longer time in the tank bed.

This bird sanctuary is also habitat for fresh water flooded forest tree species. Freshwater swamp forest / trees are found only at Nelapattu in India. The fresh water flooded forest tree at Nelapattu is Barringtonia acutangula (Hijal). This tree also grows in uplands but the tree species available at Nelapattu is suitable to grow in flooded conditions lasting for 5 to 7 months at a stretch. The saplings can survive total submergence during the long duration of flooding.

Fresh water flooded forests / trees can be cultivated in India for rain water harvesting and to utilize the area of manmade reservoirs for growing forest / plantations to compensate the forest / agriculture land submergence by irrigation or hydro power projects. Nelapattu is ideal place to grow fresh water flooded forest on experimental basis.

NELAPATTU BIRD SANCTUARY:

A must-visit for all bird lovers, this world-renowned sanctuary on the banks of Pulicat lake, is spread over 486 sq.km. In Nelapattu Bird Sanctuary you can sopt the well-known Siberian Cranes and nearly 160 species of birds from as far away as the USA, China, Antarctica among others.

Nelapattu Bird Sanctuary is the breeding gound for rare and endangered species like Grey Pelicans, Open-Billed Storks, Little Cormorants, Spoon Bills, White Ibises and Night Herons. Egrets, Terns and Ducks also find it an ideal roosting place.

For the nature enthusiast, an environmental education center, museum, library and an auditorium with audiovisual equipemtn, serve as a means of information and interpretation.

FLEMINGO FESTIVAL:

An annual Flamingo festival is held every year in January/February. Seminar on ecology, exhibitions, cultural programmes & conducted tours for bird watching are organised during the festival.

The ideal time to visit Nelapattu Bird Sanctuary is between October and March as the weather then is extremely pleasant which gives greater opportunity to the visitors to enjoy the sight of birds and animals in their natural habitat.

Once you reach Sullur pet, take a bus to Dora Vari Satram, and walk 2 km on a dusty sandy trail to reach the sanctuary, which is open everyday till five in the evening. The best you could do is to arrange your own conveyance.

Woodland Park Zoo is an award-winning is a zoological garden around the Phinney Ridge neighborhood of Seattle, Washington. Occupying the western half of Woodland Park, the zoo began as a small menagerie on the estate of Guy C. Phinney, a Canadian-born lumber mill owner and real estate developer. Opened in 1899, the 188-acre Woodland Park was sold to the city for $5,000 in cash and the assumption of a $95,000 mortgage on December 28, 1899, by Phinney's wife (Phinney had died six years earlier, in 1893). The sum was so large that the Seattle mayor vetoed the acquisition, only to be overruled by the city council. In 1902, the Olmsted Brothers firm of Boston was hired to design the city's parks, including Woodland Park, and the next year the collection of the private Leschi Park menagerie was moved to Phinney Ridge.

The zoological garden featuring more than 1,000 animals representing nearly 300 species from around the world. The zoo also brings special exhibits, which have included monitor dragons, butterflies, and other bugs and beasts. Bring a picnic to enjoy on the green lawns of Woodland Park , which surrounds the zoo.

MY EXPERIENCE:

I had a very nice trip to the Woodland Park Zoo with my family. The zoo was not crowded at all, and in fact had just the right amount of visitors to make it feel festive and friendly.

It is a nicely laid-out zoo and just unfolds and lets you discover the animals as you walk along. The animals were all in good spirits and quite lively, so that was definitely worth the visit.
There are tons of animals ranging from lions, to tigers, to bears. My kid seems to really enjoy the penguins, leopard, and gorilla exhibits.
Don't miss the nearby Rose Garden.

The Red Fort also known as Lal Qila is a 17th century fort complex constructed by the Mughal emperor, Shah Jahan in the walled city of Old Delhi that served as the residence of the Mughal Emperors. Red Fort is situated on the side of Yamuna River and every year on 15 August (Independence Day) Indian flag is hoisted here by Prime Minister of India. Red Fort was the palace of Mughal Emperors and later became the center of politics in British times. The earlier Red Fort was built by Tomara king Anangpala, now known as the Qulb Mosque.

It was here in Red Fort that the famous Peacock Throne built for Shah Jahan was kept. It was later stolen by Nadir Shah during the plunder and loot he caused in Delhi.

HISTORY:

Red Fort was built in 17th century by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan. It was the palace of Shah Jahan and rest of the Mughal Emperors till last emperor Bhadhur Shah Zafar was exiled. However, Aurangzeb was the first and last great Mughal emperor to rule from here.

It was built using the red sandstone hence the name Red Fort. It took 9 years and 10 million rupees to complete the Red Fort.

Shah Jahan began construction of this massive fort in 1638 and it was completed in 1648. He moved his capital from Agra to Delhi and laid the foundations of Shahjahanabad, the seventh city of Delhi, to bring prestige to his reign, and to provide ample opportunity to apply his ambitious building schemes and interests.

Shah Jahan never completely moved his capital from Agra to his new city of Shahjahanabad in Delhi because he was deposed and imprisoned in Agra Fort by his son Aurangzeb. The Red Fort has had many developments added on after its construction by Emperor Shah Jahan. The significant phases of development were under Aurangzeb and later under later Mughal rulers.

Red Fort has a Drum House, Hall of Public Audiences, white marble Hall of Private Audiences, the Pearl Mosque, Royal Baths and Palace of Color in its vicinity.

ARCHITECTURE:

The Red Fort with thick red sandstone walls, bulging with turrets and bastions is one of the largest and oldest monument in Delhi India. The Fort rises above a wide dry moat in the northeast corner of the original city of Shahjahanabad, now Old Delhi. Its walls extend from 2 kms and vary in height from 18 m on the river side to 33 m on the city side.

The Fort also houses the Diwan-i-Am or the Hall of Public Audiences where the Emperor would sit and hear complaints of the common folks. The Diwan-i-Khas is the hall of private audiences where the Emperor held private meetings. This hall is made of marble and its center-piece used to be the Peacock Throne, which was carried away to Iran by Nadir Shah in 1739.

The other attractions within this monument are the Royal Baths or hammams, the Shahi Burj, which used to be Shahjahan's private working area and the Moti Masjid or the Pearl Mosque, built by Aurangzeb for his personal use. The Rang Mahal or the "Palace of Colors" housed the Emperor's wives and mistresses. This palace was crowned with gilded turrets, delicately painted and decorated with an intricate mosaic of mirrors, and a ceiling overlaid with gold and silver that was reflected in a central pool in the marble floor.

It is enclosed by a rubble stone wall, with bastions, gates and wickets at intervals. Of its fourteen gates, the important ones are the Mori, Lahori, Ajmeri, Turkman, Kashmiri and Delhi gates, some of which have already been demolished. His famous citadel, the Lal-Qila, or the Red Fort, lying at the town's northern end on the right bank or the Yamuna and south of Salimgarh, was begun in 1639 and completed after nine years. The Red Fort is different from the Agra fort and is better planned, because at its back lies the experience gained by Shahjahan at Agra, and because it was the work of one hand. It is an irregular octagon, with two long sides on the east and west, and with two main gates, one on the west and the other on the south, called Lahori and Delhi gates respectively. While the walls, gates and a few other structures in the fort are constructed of red sandstone, marble has been largely used in the palaces.

From the western gateway after passing through the vaulted arcade, called Chhatta-Chowk, one reaches the Naubat- or Naqqar-Khana ('Drum-house'), where ceremonial music was played and which also served as the entrance to the Diwan-i-'Am. Its upper storey is now occupied by the Indian War Memorial Museum.

The Diwan-i-' Am ('Hall of Public Audience') is a rectangular hall, three aisle deep, with a facade of nine arches. At the back of the hall is an alcove, where the royal throne stood under a marble canopy, with an inlaid marble dias below it for the prime minister. The wall behind the throne is ornamented with beautiful panels of pietra dura work, said to have been executed by Austin DE Bordeaux, a Florentine artist. Orpheus with his lute is represented in one of the panels here. Originally there were six marble palaces along the eastern water front. Behind the Diwan-i-' Am but separated by a court is the Rang-Mahal ('Painted Palace'), so called owing to colored decoration on its interior. It consists of a main hall with an arched front, with vaulted chambers on either end. A water-channel, called the Nahr-i-Bihisht ('Stream of Paradise'), ran down through it, with a central marble basin fitted with an ivory fountain. The Mumtaz-Mahal, originally an important apartment in the imperial seraglio, now houses the Delhi Fort Museum.

The Diwan-i-Khass ('Hall of Private Audience') is a highly-ornamented pillared hall, with a flat ceiling supported on engrailed arches. The lower portion of its piers is ornamented with floral pietra dura panels, while the upper portion was originally gilded and painted. Its marble dias is said to have supported the famous Peacock Throne, carried away by the Persian invader Nadir Shah.

The Tasbih-Khana ('chamber for counting beads for private prayers') consists of three rooms, behind which is the Khwabgah ('sleeping-chamber'). On the northern screen of the former is a representation of the Scales of Justice, which are suspended over a crescent amidst stars and clouds. Adjoining the eastern wall of the Khwabgah is the octagonal Muthamman-Burj, from where the emperor appeared before his subjects every morning. A small balcony, which projects from the Burj, was added here in 1808 by Akbar Shah II, and it was from this balcony that King George V and Queen Mary appeared before the people of Delhi in December 1911.

The Hammam ('Bath') consists of three main apartments divided by corridors. The entire interior, including the floor, is built of marble and inlaid with colored stones. The baths were provided with 'hot and cold water’, and it is said that one of the fountains in the easternmost apartment emitted rose water. To the west of the Hammam is the Moti-Masjid ('Pearl Mosque'), added later by Aurangzeb. The Hayat-Bakhsh-Bagh ('Life-giving garden'), with its pavilions, lies to the north of the mosque, and was later considerably altered and reconstructed. The red-stone pavilion in the middle of the tank in the centre of the Hayat-Bakhsh-Bagh is called Zafar-Mahal and was built by Bahadur Shah II in about 1842.

In 1644, Shahjahan commenced in Delhi his great mosque, the Jami'- Masjid the largest mosque in India, and completed it in 1650. Its square quadrangle with arched cloisters on the sides and a tank in the center is 100 m. wide. Built on a raised plinth, it has three imposing gateways approached by long flights of steps. Its prayer-hall, with a facade of eleven arches, flanked by a four-storeyed minaret on either end, is covered by three large domes ornamented with alternating stripes of 'black and white marble.

India Gate is a majestic high arch, 42 meters high, built as a memorial to the Indian soldiers killed in the World War I. The surrounding area is an ideal place for spending sometime with family and friends.

Jama Masjid:

Jama Masjid is the largest and one of the oldest mosques of Delhi and it can incorporate around 25,000 people at a time. Jama Masjid was also built by Shah Jahan and it took 6 years to built it.

Lotus Temple:

Shaped like a Lotus, the Lotus Temple also know as the Bahai Temple is the most wonderful modern marvel of 20th century India. Open to all, the Lotus Temple is an ideal place for peace and meditation.

Qutub Minar:

Qutub Minar was the first Islamic structure Built in India. One of the most visited tourist spot of Delhi, Qutub Minar was built in 1199 by Qutub-ud-Din. . It is 72.5 metres high and one has to climb 379 steps to get to the top. The diameter of the base is 14.3 metres while the top floor measures 2.7 metres in diameter.

Raj Ghat:

Raj Ghat is the place where Father of Nation, Mahatma Gandhi was cremated. Later many famous politicians like Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, Sanjay Gandhi and many others were also cremated in the vicinity.

Red Fort remains open for visitors from Tuesday to Sunday but remains closed on Monday. It also remains closed on National Holidays.
It opens between 9.30 am to 4.30 pm.
Each evening (except Monday) a one-hour sound-and-light show re-creates events of India's history, particularly those associated with the Red Fort.

India's tallest Monument: Qutub Minar

Qutub Minar is the pride of Delhi. Qutub Minar is a World Heritage Site and has survived the ravages of time impressively. The tall and ever attractive monument of Delhi which can be seen from most parts of the city is called the Qutab Minar. The Minar of Delhi is surrounded by a lush green garden, which is an ideal leisurely place for visitors. Qutab Minar is the favourite destination of tourists. It is India's most visited monument attracting around 3.9 million visitors every year.

HISTORY:

According to history books, the minar was started by Prithviraj or his uncle Vigraharaja who won Delhi from the Tomar Rajputs. However, it is assumed and historians believe that Qutubuddib and Iltutmish finished it though the minar may have been commenced by Prithviraj or Vigraharaja. The minar was completed in 1200 A.D and since then the tall structure has been there upright and ever beautiful keeping an eye to Delhi just like a sentry. When Alauddin returned from the wars in the Deccan, he had this thought in mind that he would build a victory tower somewhat similar to the Qutab Minar. The ruins of this very initiative can be seen adjacent to the Qutbuddin's mosque because Alauddin died at the very start of the construction work and no one carried on to finish the initiative taken by Alauddin.

ARCHITECTURE:

Qutab Minar is another great masterpiece of Mughal architecture. It has a number of floors or storeys which has beautiful carvings like the one on the tomb of Iltutmish. The soaring conical tower is an exquisite example of Indo-Islamic Afghan architecture. There are inscriptions all round the tower and these inscriptions reveal that Iltutmish finised the tower. The structure of the wall is made as such that it widens from top to bottom, just to make the minar stronger.

Moving upstairs inside the minar will give you a wonderful experience and counting the stairs is always a fun for visitors. The tower has five distinct storeys, each marked by a projecting balcony and tapers from a 15 m diameter at the base to just 2.5 m at the top. The first three storeys are made of red sandstone; the fourth and fifth storeys are of marble and sandstone. The base of the Qutub Minar measures 14.32 meters and the top of the structure measures 2.75 meters. It has 378 steps to reach at the top. The base of first storey has alternate angular and circular flutings, the second one is round. The third storey of the Qutub Minar has angular flutings. The balconies projecting out heighten the beauty of the Minar.

The top of the tower gives an insight to Delhi because you get to see the bird's eye view of the city. To point a few sight seeing from the top, you will find views of the Hauz Khaz on the left and the walls of the Jahanpanah and Siri on the right. It was this very top of Qutab Minar that was used by Khilji and Tughlaq kings to watch the wild Mongol hordes when they threatened Delhi. The top also served as the watch top for Tughlaq who watched Timur's army camp on the Wellingdon Airport. Other important monuments that is visible from the top are the walls of Tughlaqabad, Humayun's Tomb, Purana Qila, Firoz Shah Kotla and Jama Masjid.

The minar was hit by lightening couple of times and was damaged. The subsequent rulers repaired it. Thus it is standing mightily as it was before till date. During the rule of Firoz Shah, the minar's two top floors got damaged due to earthquake but were repaired by Firoz Shah. In the year 1505, earthquake again struck and it was repaired by Sikandar Lodi. Later on in the year 1794, the minar faced another earthquake and it was Major Smith, an engineer who repaired the affected parts of the minar. He replaced Firoz Shah's pavilion with his own pavilion at the top. The pavilion was removed in the year 1848 by Lord Hardinge and now it can be seen between the Dak Bungalow and the Minar in the garden. The floors built by Firaz Shah can be distinguished easily as the pavilions was built of white marbles and are quite smooth as compared to other ones.

By Metro(Rail):

Delhi Metro(DMRC) services are available available to reach Qutub Minar from Central Secretariat and Gurgaon. Just board on Delhi metro from any metro station in DMRC for Qutub Minar station and follow the rail map to reach destination.

By Bus:

Qutub Minar is quite easy as Qutub Minar is very well connected with the low floor DTC buses. Delhi Tourism offers Delhi Darshan Day tours and cover Qutub Minar. Ho HO Buses are also available.
