I am still amazed how my shovel slices through the ground like it were May soil and not the normally frozen February tundra. Usually the ground is impenetrable to trowel, shovel and pick axe until at least April. There would be no silver for me but I did discover history.

I found a General Motors Key Chain Tag given out on May 16th 1956 for the dedication of the General Motors Technical Center, which at the time was the most futuristic and modern facility of its kind. Which means it's dated as hell now.

All in all it was another great couple of hours spent tromping around in the woods listening to the echo of the geese honking across the river. It was an absolutely, wonderfully, beautiful February day in Wisconsin. I'd like another just like it tomorrow, but maybe with the added jingle of silver in my pouch.

The temperature was in the low 30's with the promise of it climbing into the 40's.

The woods beckoned and I answered. Headphones on and detector in hand, I ventured into the woods amidst the caws of several nearby crows who angrily took flight upon my arrival. As the crows departed, two geese glided by, honking, with their webbed feat hanging at the ready to skim across the lazy river with too much agile and ease for it to end the way it did, a water plowing plunge, that sounded more like a fat kid "canonballing" into a public swimming pool, knees held high against his tummy.

As I walked in, I wondered if I'd find treasure or if today was going to be the day that one of those dead and broken "widow maker" trees was finally going to give way and crash down upon me, rather than just threaten me with their eerie protesting creeks.

Watch as I find silver, wheaties, a few relics, and even some jewelry!

This is not so much of a "how to" but more of a "How I" locate and scout
areas for metal detecting. It is just one of several areas that I've
secured for treasure hunting and metal detecting later in the season.
This old site had several, at least 6 foundation sites and one of these
sites has a cellar with what appears to be some very old stone wall, the
same foundation has concrete walls too, so it may be a mixture of old
and new.

I found the old bottle dump area as well. On the
surface was a bunch of modern stuff appearing to be from the 60's and
70's...hopefully under neath that we will find some older bottles and
the like.

I will be revisiting this site as soon as the ground
thaws, hopefully I will pull some very nice old coins and relics out of

It has been an unseasonably warm winter and when I was out scouting for an old bottle dump last weekend, I noticed the ground was soft and diggable. So, I went out into the woods near the old bottle dump and began my search of
treasure. What did I find?

I found a 1962 SILVER dime, a 1920 buffalo nickel (first of the season), a 1909 wheat
penny (non S VDB), a Model T Ford key, and an Edwardian style pin in the shape of a horse.

Wikipedia describes Edwardian as: The Edwardian era or Edwardian period in the United Kingdom is the period covering the reign of King Edward VII, 1901 to 1910.

The most interesting and promising fact I noticed about this site is that I only found (3) clad coins, all pennies. The denomination is of no particular significance, but what is significant is that there were only the (3) clad coins. With many early 1900's objects such as the coins, Model T Ford key, Edwardian style jewelry and silver VS. the low amount of modern coins...I'd say that's a clue that this place had heavy usage during my targeted or desired time periods and less usage in the modern or unwanted time period.

Currently the Concordia is off limits as it is considered a grave site.
It's just a matter of time until people raid this treasure trove.
These raiders will range from the common thief to rumors of mafia teams
of divers.

Finally, a break in the weather! I decided to get out and scout an
area for a possible bottle dump. Well, I found one! As a matter of fact I
found a huge one!

I can't wait to get back and do a little
digging. On the surface was a HUGE amount of bottles and china from the
1960's...I'm hoping that below the surface we can find some older
stuff. We found two "Old Mr. Boston" 1.6 oz liquor bottles among other
things.

After I got home I did a little more research and discovered this road on an 1891 map and it seams to disappear after 1955. Not only was there a nice bottle dump at the end of the road, but taking in consideration the time frame this now extinct road was in use, I believe it will also pan out for some metal detecting and should give up some nice old coins.
spent a lot of time filming and making parody videos while I should have
been detecting but it was a lot of fun and I think I'll do the same
next year. Even with all of the filming and parody movies we produced
the treasure hall was still not all that bad. Thanks for watching!
NYmag.com did an article about things under water in the Hudson River. Among various other things are 1600 silver bars. In 1903 a barge carrying 7687 bars of silver capsized spilling the bars into the river. All but 1600 of the bars were recovered and they are still there today. Along with the bars are four-foot-long concrete eating worms, Hudson River alligators, 300 + shipwrecks and many many other things.

This is a very interesting article with quotes from an NYPD diver. I think you will like it.

I conducted air tests with my new Garrett AT-Pro metal detector.
Using various targets you would expect to find while out coin shooting
or treasure hunting with a metal detecting. This video was shot while
using a silver mercury dime, a silver Roosevelt dime, Clad quarter,
copper and zinc penny, nickel and a silver dime while masked with a
piece of iron. Enjoy!

I recently saw this video at http://www.treasure-blog.com I have to agree with the administrators of that blog. If I had the ability to search that area and help this man find his fathers badge, I would do it in a heart beat.

Fresno police officer Patrick Daulbec's parents were killed in a plane crash 40 years ago while returning from a Las Vegas trip they won while appearing on the "Newlywed" game. Daulbec's father's badge is most likely buried atop Mt. Whitney in California.

This is a little video I put together on a day when I went metal

also show how to deal with that friend who always finds silver coins and

Swainson a metal detector enthusiast from Karuah, Australia found a
rare brass button bearing the Australian Agriculture Company (AAC) logo. At
first Swainson regarded the button as a nice souvenier but after
showing it to David Benson, Karuah Historian David was informed of the
significance of his find. It has yet to be “officially”
confirmed, but it is believed to be an 1830’s convict-era button from
the uniform of an AAC worker.

Great Lakes Council’s heritage officer Gary Smith described the find as “incredible”.

said “I just want it to be able to be appreciated… It would be a shame
to lock it up in a private collection where people can't appreciate the
history and the likes."

Pat Croce, the former president of the of the Philadelphia 76'ers basketball team and self confessed pirate buff, believes that his team of international explorers from the likes of Britain, Panama, Australia, France, Scotland, and Columbia are close to locating the watery grave of the British Naval hero, Sir Francis Drake.

Croce financed the expedition to the coast off Panama in order to hopefully locate the final resting place of Drake. The team is equipped with some of the most sophisticated equipment available and has located the ships, Elizabeth and Delight. They believe Drake's lead lined coffin to be nearby. Croce said "It's truly a needle in a haystack, but so were the ships. We found them within a week. We just haven't found him - yet." Croce continued "Explorers have been trying to do this stuff forever, and here I am, a homeboy from Philadelphia in the Caribbean and we score! It's pretty wild." Speaking about the ships, Croce said there was no treasure on board as they were stripped prior to being scuttled by the crew.

Sir Francis Drake died from dysentery at the age of 55. He was buried at sea in a lead lined coffin, wearing his full set of armor. Drake is considered a British Naval hero, having lead the English Navy to victory over Spanish Armada in 1588. Drake was also the first Englishman to circumnavigate globe.

James Sinclair a marine archeologist said "We've really, I feel, hit a home run here with what we found with Pat." Sinclair added "Finding ship structures from that time period in this temperature water with the type of organisms that exist is a treasure in itself."
