Crochet Magic Ring or Magic Loop Video Tutorial

You've heard me talk about the Magic Ring or Magic Loop (whichever you prefer) a lot! I love it! There is just no other way to get such a tight circle to finish off your work that I have found. It's a little confusing to explain so I thought I would just whip up a little video tutorial for you. I hope it helps and please disregard my overly dry hands, lol. I need some lotion stat!!!

Crochet Flower Coaster Pattern

Spring has Sprung Floral Coaster

Materials needed:

F Hook (3.75 MM)

Worsted Weight 100% Cotton Yarn (I prefer Drops Paris)

Abbreviation List:

CH - Chain

SS - Slip Stitch

SC - Single Crochet

DC - Double Crochet

DC CL - Double Crochet Cluster

Pattern

First, form a Magic Loop (Video Tutorial here)

Round 1 - CH 1, 7 SC in ring, join with a SS into first SC (total 8 SC). (First picture below)

Round 2 - CH 2, 2 DC CL* in same stitch, *CH 2, 3 DC CL in next stitch*, repeat *to* 6 more times, so you have 8 petals, join with SS into first CH 2 of this round.

Round 3 - SS in to next stitch and then SS into CH 2 space. CH 2, 1 DC, CH 2,

2 DC in the same space, *2 DC, CH 2, 2 DC in the next space*, repeat *to* 6 more times, join with SS into first CH 2 of this round.

Round 4 - SS in to next stitch and then SS into CH 2 space from previous round. CH 2, 7 DC in the same space, *8 DC into the next space* , repeat *to* 6 more times, join with SS into first CH 2 of this round and fasten off and weave in ends.

*(DC CL: Insert hook, yarn over, pull through 2 loops, insert hook (in the same stitch), yarn over pull through 2 loops, there will be 3 loops on hook, insert hook (still in the same stitch) yarn over, pull through 2 loops, 4 loops on hook, yarn over, pull through all loops.)

Meet the Relief Society - Birthday Celebration

For the first time in my life I found myself heading up a major event for my ward. The Relief Society Birthday Celebration, yikes! Don't get me wrong I've done a party or two, but nothing at this scale. And to be completely honest its been a few years since I have even attended this event. I was seriously kicking myself for that one. It would have been nice to have an idea of whats been done in the past.

Coming up with the theme seemed the most daunting when I was told "whatever you want will be great". I think that one sentence gives me more anxiety than anything because there is not one once of direction. Maybe its just me, but does anyone else feel that way? Any who, I finally settled on "Meet The Relief Society". After watching Jenna Kim Jones do that very thing on the streets of New York City in Meet the Mormons. I thought how fun it would be to walk around the ward and ask them questions relating to Relief Society. Seriously funny stuff and doing this in my ward yielded the same results. I did, however, ask some serious questions too so I was able to swing things around so that the spirit was felt and hopefully the sisters walked away with a renewed sense of sisterhood.

The questions I asked were:

What year was the Relief Society founded?
Who was the first General Relief Society President?
Can you name the last three Relief Society Presidents of our ward?
What age do you enter Relief Society?
What does "Relief" mean?
What are you most looking forward to when you're in Relief Society?
What does your mom do in Relief Society?
What do we learn about in Relief Society?
and finally, What does Relief Society mean to you?

I asked these questions to the Bishopric, members of the Stake Presidency, the men and women of the ward as well as the youth and primary. I asked three questions per interview and only asked the questions that pertained to who I was asking them to. I used my phone to record them and then ended the video with a short clip called Enduring Legacy. I am no expert, but it turned out, so I'm not complaining. When the film was finished I talked a bit about how we don't need to know all of the answers, what calling we hold doesn't matter, but what does matter is the sisterhood that we are given through Relief Society.

The decor was vintage inspired and my dear friend Emily knocked it our of the ball park. The bird cages were the cutest things ever and you know I was just dying over all of the crocheted doilies!! The paper doilies hanging from the ceiling really pulled everything together.

The food was simple and light and just perfect. we served chicken croissant sandwiches with fruit and veggies and homemade sugar cookies made by the amazing Jamie Scott. I can't believe I didn't get a picture!

And I can't not talking about all the fresh flowers on all of the tables. Smelled divine and made me antsy to get home and get planting.

I must say, I learned a lot and have my list of things that I will definitely need to fix for next time, but I came away with a deeper love for the sisters in my ward. They are so full of love and willing to pitch in when they see this newbie struggling. Oh how I love the sisterhood that is Relief Society!!!

Crochet Shamrock Pattern

Materials needed:

F Hook

Worsted Weight Yarn (I prefer Drops Paris #11 Green)

Abbreviation list:

CH - Chain

SC - Single Crochet

TR - Treble Crochet

Sl st - Slip Stitch

Shamrock Pattern

Create a Magic Ring (video tutorial here). The shamrock’s petals will be worked into this ring.

Petal 1: * CH 4, Work 3 TR into center ring. CH 3, SC into ring.*

*Repeat 2 more times for a total of 3 petals.

Stem: After working petals, CH 5. Work 1 SC in 2nd CH from hook, 3 Sl st in chains just made, working back towards the petals. Join with a Sl st into center ring.

Fasten off and weave in ends.

Garland:

CH 50, *SC into top of CH 4 on first petal, CH 20* repeat until last Shamrock is added. Then CH 50.

I made 10 Shamrocks for my Garland, but you can make it as long or as short as you would like.

Valentine Heart Garland

Materials needed:

G Hook

Worsted Weight Yarn (I prefer Drops Paris in Red #12)

Abbreviation list:

CH - Chain

SC - Single Crochet

TR - Treble Crochet

Sl st - Slip Stitch

Round 1: Create a Magic Ring (video tutorial here) and CH 3, 7 TR, CH 1, 7 TR, CH 3 and then Sl st inside the Magic Ring.

Round 2: CH 4, 2 SC in the next 7 TR, CH 2, 2 SC in the next 7 TR, CH 4 and Sl st inside the Magic Ring. Close ring, fasten off and tie in ends.

Repeat 9 more times for a total of 10 hearts.

Garland:

Chain 50

Attach hearts by SC into top of CH 4 on one side of the heart, CH 5, SC to top of CH 4 on other side, CH 15. Repeat for each heart until you reach final heart. After last SC, CH 50 and fasten off.

One of my most favorite patterns that I have created to date are these fun Crochet Bows. They are my go to for Baby shower gifts as they are quick and easy to make. Perfect on a headband or hair clip these little bows are sure to delight!

Mini Puff Bow or Single Bow

SKILL LEVEL: Beginner/Intermediate

CROCHET HOOK: Size F

YARN SIZE: 3 or 4 (DK-Worsted weight)

SIZE: One Size fits all
FINISHED SIZE: 2 1/2 in.

First Bow –

Rnd 1: Ch 5. Tr into 1st Ch 4 times , Ch 4, slip stitch into 1st ch.

Rnd 2: Ch 4. Tr into 1st Ch 4 timess , Ch 4, slip stitch into 1st ch.

Tie off weave in ends. (If making single bow leave one tail and skip to Finishing)

Second Bow –

Rnd 1: Ch 5. Tr into 1st Ch 4 times , Ch 4, slip stitch into 1st ch.

Rnd 2: Ch 4. Tr into 1st Ch 4 times , Ch 4, slip stitch into 1st ch.

Rnd 3: Without tying off, weave in beginning tail and place hook back into last slip stitch made. Ch 1. Place bows back to back and Sc through the two top loops that are touching (back loop of front bow and front loop of back bow) all the way around, stitching the two bows together (24 total Sc around bow).

Rnd 4: Slip stich into first Sc. Measure out an 18” tail and cut yarn.

FINISHING
Take tail and wrap around center of bow. Weave in ends. Now you can hot glue an alligator clip (single or double prong whichever you prefer), elastic or metal headband to the back of the bow. Allow to dry and it’s ready to use.

Going into my third year of choosing my One Little Word with Ali Edwards it always amazes me how my word always finds me. This year it wasn't any different. Though I did fight this word at first, I knew in the end it was meant to be. My word for 2015 is:

As I've taken my previous words into my life I have learned to Breathe and just slow down and enjoy each moment, to have the Courage that its okay to say no and to be myself and now with Simplify I want to work smarter not harder. By definition, to make things less complex. I love how each of these words are building on each other to help me become a better mother, wife and friend.

My goal in 2015 is to bring my life down to its simplest level of wife, mother, friend and business owner. I'm not going to compare what I'm doing wrong, or even right, to those that surround me. It is to easy to get caught up in the politics of life. "She" has what I want or why can't I be more like "her". The best is what is "she" doing right that I'm doing wrong. Who is this "she" that makes me feel so inadequate? It could be business's that I follow, people that I admire or friends that surround me. I don't want that to be my driving force. This year I want to let that go (feel free to break out in song now, lol) and focus on simplifying my life and how I can make it better for me and my family.

Here in this first week of January I don't know what this means for me, but I am so excited for this journey. 2015 lets do this!!!

Hand Exercises for Crochet and Knitting

Crocheting, or Knitting for that matter, can wreak havoc on your fingers and wrists especially if you’re doing it for long hours at a time. On average I usually spend about 4-5 hours a day crocheting. Though, during the fall/winter months that will double. Before I begin I exercise my fingers and wrists to help with pain and stiffness that can occur. I also take a break about every 45 minutes to perform these exercises again. It totally helps me and I hope it will help you as well!

Exercises for the Fingers

Place your Left pinkie finger in your right palm and press pinkie back repeat for all fingers then switch to your Right pinkie and repeat for each finger. Next take your thumb and press fingers into your palm and repeat for each hand.
Hold your hands in front of you and curl your fingers so they touch the bottom of your palm. Slowly uncurl them until they are once again straight. Repeat at least 5 times.
Spread your fingers as far apart as you can. Next bring them together forming a fist and squeeze. Repeat at least 5 times.
Use the thumb and forefinger of one hand to massage the web of the thumb on the other.
Twirl your thumbs in a circular motion.

Exercises for the Wrists

Hold your hands arms out to sides of your body and make a fist. Draw circles with your wrists while pressing your arms backwards.
Place your palms together (think yoga-prayer position) and push. Angle your wrists downwards with your elbows slightly up. Hold for a minute or so.
Lay the back of your hand on a flat surface, and press down lightly with your arm. Hold for a minute or so and repeat for other hand.
Bring your right hand up palm forward and place your left thumb on your wrist with your fingers placed on the back of your wrist. Using your thumb and fingers massage the bones and tendons that are in your wrist. Repeat for other wrist.

*Don’t forget to stretch your neck and your back as well. Every little bit helps!

Snickerdoodle Bars

Lately I have become a little bit lazy when it comes to cookie making. I love the dough, but not the time it takes to sit and wait for batches of cookies to bake. Especially when it comes to cookies like peanut butter, sugar cookies and snickerdoodles because of all the extra work it takes to prep the cookie dough before baking. I realize by lumping peanut butter cookies in there it tells you exactly how lazy I am, lol.

With that being said I've been creating a lot of bar cookies. Make the dough, press it all into a pan, bake and bam...done! I would like to say they all turn out fantastic, but that is so not the case. Lots of trial and error people!! Well, finally, one paid off. I have fallen in love with this Snickerdoodle Bar recipe and after making it 3 weeks in a row can now say its not a dud, lol. The best part is my family completely agrees, yay!!! I hope you like them as much as we all do.

Snickerdoodle Bars

2 2/3 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon salt
2 cups packed brown sugar
1 cup butter, at room temperature
2 eggs, at room temperature
1 Tablespoon vanilla
2 Tablespoons white sugar
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Lightly grease a 9 x 13 inch baking pan.
2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder and salt. Set aside.
3. In a large mixing bowl, beat together the butter, brown sugar, eggs and vanilla until smooth. Add the flour mixture to the egg mixture and beat until well blended.
4. Spread the batter evenly in the prepared pan.
5. In a small bowl, combine the white sugar and cinnamon.
6. Sprinkle the mixture evenly over the batter in the baking pan.
7. Bake for 30 minutes.
8. Let cool slightly then cut into squares.

I can't believe how long it's been since I've taken the time to write a post. I'm laying here on the couch and thought what the heck...

I have been busy trying to redo the upstairs. We have lived here 3 1/2 years and I haven't touched it at all...crazy right!! Well I changed that in a hurry!! I started with the kitchen by removing the top chair rail and reprinting. Then removed some cabinets. We don't have the funds to purchase the cabinets I want right now, but I'm okay with that ;)

I can't believe how long it's been since I have blogged, but I kinda got took over by life and a little social thing called Instagram. Don't shoot me, but I'm loving it more than Pinterest. A must visit and a little treasure

Last week when I was on my way home from SNAP I couldn't help but make a side trip. Heber City is one of my most favorite cities in the world. Just south of Park City Utah it is a second home to me. My parents are both from there so I spent the majority of my youth there vacationing. Now that all of my grandparents are deceased I don't make it up there as much as I would like. So as I was headed down I-15 looking east to Timpanogos I naturally took the exit. I called my Aunt and cousins and was all smiles as I entered the valley.

It was amazing to be able to spend a couple of hours feeling like I'd come home. It was a great re-charge of my system. Especially when I was able to spend a little time here:

They were a very important in my life and miss them daily!!

On a much happier note my cuz gave me the most fabulous little treasure...a recipe. Any of you who are lucky enough to visit Heber they have a most amazing burger joint called Dairy Keen. They posted a few of their recipes in the local newspaper and the name alone had me excited...Waffle French Toast!!

Waffle French Toast

Makes 5 Slices

2 Eggs

1/4 cup Milk

1 tsp Sugar

1 tsp Cinnamon

5 slices of Bread

Preheat your waffle iron. Spray with cooking spray. Mix the egg, milk, sugar, cinnamon together in a bowl that will fit the bread. Dip the bread into the egg mixture, turn the bread over to cover all the bread. Place the soaked bread into a pre-heated waffle iron. Close the lid and press down slightly. Cook for 1 to 1 1/2 minutes. Open the lid and remove. Enjoy with maple syrup or powdered sugar.

They are amazing!! My kids couldn't get enough and neither could I :)

To new things and old favorites

Anyone who knows me or at least has been out to eat with me knows that I am one picky eater. I order the same foods, I make the same foods, tried and true through and through! But due to Bryce's International Day project I branched out to my Aunt for some help. Bryce chose Greece for his country and I just so happened to have an Uncle that was from Greece. Unfortunately he has passed, but my Aunt was the next best thing. She had oodles of information for us and some great recipes for us to try. The one we went with is called "Koulourakia" or Easter cookies. I was thoroughly amazed at how good they really were. I mean, granted, they're not chocolate chip. But I really liked them!! If you ever feel like a little something different, I would definitely recommend these little treasures.

Koulourakia (Easter Cookies) 5 dozen

1 cup butter

2 cups sugar

6 eggs

1/2 cup milk

4 tsp baking powder

8 cups flour

1/2 tsp cinnamon

1 tsp vanilla

1/2 tsp allspice

2 tbsp anise

Topping

2 egg yolks (I omitted this)

sesame seeds (I omitted this)

powdered sugar

Cream butter add sugar - mix. Add eggs, milk, vanilla and anise. Combine flower, baking powder, cinnamon and allspice. Mix well. Kneed dough and add additional flour until no longer sticky. Roll into 1 inch balls. Bake at 350 for 15 minutes. When cool roll in powdered sugar. If using the egg and seeds: baste cookies with yolk then roll in sesame seeds finish by sprinkling with powdered sugar.

Now with the something new comes tried and true. I have to include my all time favorite recipe - Seven Layer Bars.

Seven Layer Bars

1/4 cup Butter (melted)

1 cup Graham Cracker Crumbs

1 cup Coconut

1 15oz can Sweetened Condensed Milk

1 6oz package Chocolate Chips

1 6oz package Butterscotch Chips

1 cup chopped pecans

Layer in order listed in a 9x13 pan. Press ingredients together. Bake at 350' for 30 minutes.

What we've been up to

My goodness time flies when you're having fun! I have been trying desperately to get caught up on orders and to prepare for the Queen Bee Market at the Snap Conference. In the mean time my little ones have been busy as well.

Bryce played in a little Basketball league and he did amazing. He still is a little shy and that equates to a lot of running around. I can't wait until he realizes that he is one amazing young man and takes the bulls by the horn to go after that ball!! Each year he gets closer and closer to that goal :)

A few years ago I dabbled in making these onesies for friends who were expecting. I was asked by my BFF's mom to make one for her friend and I was excited to do it. Took me a few tries to remember how I did it, but I thought it turned out super cute :) I was happy to see that I still had some sewing skills!

I can't believe that one year has passed and Bryce now has his Wolf. Cub scouts has done amazing things for him and I am so thankful for such an amazing program!!

Jayna and Bryce had their first piano recitals and I can't even explain how proud of them I am!! They did an awesome job and I was completely devastated to find out that my camera didn't record Bryce :(

Good thing we'll have another one in a couple of months!!!

The girls had to get to dance right after so they were dressed a little differently than everyone else, but I thought that added to the character of their pieces ;)

Well 2 weeks in..how are you doing? I'm down 4.5 lbs :) got to love the beginning of a diet. I know from here on out it's going to be pretty slow, but it helps to have the encouragement of those first few pounds gone. My workout is going fairly well though I still struggle with some of the core exercises.

One that is particularly hard is what my trainer calls the Modified V Sit-up. I hold a 15lb weight and struggle to get to 25 reps. I can feel it not only in my core but my shoulders/arms as well. I made a little video to explain it best, but please be kind seeing it was 5:30 in the morning ;)

This little calendar has literally changed my life!! I use the calendar on my iphone religiously and I also have a month calendar on my fridge, but there isn't enough space in the boxes to write down all the info for every event. So how does that help out the rest of my family...it doesn't! Now I can fill in one week at a time with all the necessary info and every member in my family (the ones that read, that it) know exactly where they need to be and how long. Who's picking them up and what they need to bring/wear. It fits right on my fridge above the water/ice dispenser so that I can still keep my monthly calendar on the right side. I found this challenge from Home Storage Solutions 101 on Pinterest and it immediately peeked my interest. When I looked at the details I knew it was something I could handle. I have completed week 1 of cleaning off the kitchen cabinets and sink.

The first challenge was to keep the sink/counter clean (basically clearing the dishes) at least twice a day. It was super easy til the weekend hit of course, lol. Week 2 is Kitchen Drawers & Kitchen Cabinet Organization. Luckily I have all week for this one...baby steps, baby steps!

Anybody else feeling a little tight in the jeans area??? I told myself, back in October, that I was going to be careful over the holidays, but that declaration added up to 12.4 lbs, yikes. So here I am with the rest of the nation back in the "diet" saddle. I actually am not depressed about it because for the first time I can look back and say that I thoroughly enjoyed myself. To me it was worth it. I had fun with my children making sweet treats, fun pit stops to DQ for mother/child talks and family parities full of food. I created memories and I can't complain about that.

But with that comes the struggle to get back down to goal. So here's my challenge...12.4 lbs in 12 weeks starting today. Totally doable just a little over 1 lb a week. Anybody want to join me??? I'll post the recipes I'm using and some exercise tips that I am learning from my personal trainer. Oh did I mention I have one. Yeah birthday present to me back in November that I'm just starting to really utilize. Since my theme of the year is to simplify I'm quiting Curves and just working out at Gold's Gym. I don't need both, but I figured since I did my weight training at Curves I should learn what I need to be doing at Gold's. It will be nice to only have to go to one place. It will not only save me money, but gas and time as well ;) Can't complain about that!!

With my tips will come struggles and complaints so feel free to vent as well. We can do it together :) So here's to a new year and a new us, lol!!

Wow what a year it's been. I can't believe that 2011 has come a gone. I feel as if it passed me by in such a whirlwind that it's hard for me to nail down exactly what occurred. Does anyone else feel that way? Well in order to slow down a bit I've found a quote that is going to become my motto for 2012.

I found it on my fav site Pinterest and then paid for the full resolution copy (here if you want your own) to put up on my wall. I framed it and placed it in my kitchen so I can see it every day and remember to keep me focused.

With my business keeping my hopping in 2011 I didn't have a lot of time to create and actually add those products into my shop. I'm hoping to do a lot more of that this year :) and plan on dedicating a lot more of my time to streamlining my shop and of course my products. I can't thank all of you enough for supporting me in this great adventure I am in and allowing me to continue doing something that I love. I often get asked if I'm sick of crocheting yet and I'm happy to report...not even close!!!

The best news of this new year is that I hit 1000 fans on Facebook. This has been one of my goals for awhile and I am just ecstatic that it finally came to pass. In order to say thanks I thought I would offer a little giveaway.

Rose Double Strand Headbands ($15.00)

There is nothing like a rose to make anyone feel special. That is what I had in mind when I created this beautiful Rose Headband (shown in Hot Pink). From newborn to adult this soft rose is the perfect compliment to any outfit. Crocheted with highest quality mercalized cotton yarn.

The double strand of the headband joins at both tips for easy tying. Using it as a headband there is no need to untie each time; once tied, slip it on and off with ease. Because of the nature of the tied headband one size pretty much fits all, but to better customize there are two sizes available.

The flower measures around 2 1/4", but since they are all individuals that measurement varies with each one.

I am so excited about these headbands and have had a lot of fun wearing them as well as putting them on the girls :)

Wow, what a week! I turned the big 34 and I think every day was a party day :) I have the best friends and family and they all made me feel so loved!! I actually was able to get up and get ready pretty much 6 out of the seven days this week and I couldn't be more proud of myself. I have no completed 7 full weeks, wahoo!
