Nothing Fancy

I didn't take any fancy clothes to Croatia. It's very unlike me, but we were on the move and the week kicked off with a festival so I just threw in denim cut off's and flip flops at the last minute, and boy did I live in them. These days I really do prioritise comfort...oh dear I am totally getting older. This outfit is one of comfort. Silky shorts and a loose top. No worrying about whether my tum looks flat in this outfit. Perfect! Boots...an odd choice? I hear you murmur. Yes, it did rain. Yes, it was chilly in the evenings and yes there was a heatwave going on back home in the UK! Un-bloody-believable.

We headed to the sunny land of Croatia for a week, well it was supposed to be sunny but it actually rained for a day and clouded over for the most part. But it didn't matter, we still had fun. That's when you know a place is really lovely, when it's still special in the rain. And you come back without a tan (annoyed? me? nah...) It was my first time in Croatia, have any of you been there? live there? We were actually there with ten of our friends for Soundwave festival. Four days of music, gorgeous clear blue sea, boat parties and cheap food and drink. It was magical. We got down to the likes of De La Soul, Ghostpoet and Submotion Orchestra. It really was awesome. Chris and I took off to the city of Split right after the fest and had a couple of days just mooching and munching and taking it all in. I'm not sure what we expected from Croatia, but lets just say it exceed expectations. The city was beautiful and the food...ok in places. But its the clear seas that will keep me going back. In fact the tickets are already booked for next year. Now we have to wait a year to do it all again. Booooo!

I'm so awful, I've been completely absent from the blog of late. I have really beaten myself up about it and have made an promise to oneself that I shall do an outfit post before the week is up for definite. On another note, I've been meaning to do a inspiration post for so long now. I have heaps and heaps stored up in my little desktop archives. Pretty images galore. I always wonder though, do my readers (that I so desperately hope to attract) want to see this stuff? What's the deal with that? I sure like a roll of pretty images, it kinda keeps me inspired. And there's just so much content out there online that you can get lost in it all. So its nice to see different people's edits. I'd looooove your feedback.

I came across this awesome nail idea here. Isn't it fabulous? I'm very into all things map realted lately as I was requested to do the stationary for my bestie's wedding and the theme was...you guessed it...maps! This is just so damn cute though, I must must try it.

1.paint your nails white/cream

2.soak nails in alcohol for five minutes

3. press nails to map and hold

4. paint with clear nail polish immediately after. So cute!!!

Tales from a wedding dress shop girl | The trouble with size

I bounced home tonight following a really successful and satisfying appointment with the sweetest lady. Her story started when she popped her head in sheepishly a few days ago and whispered to me "do you do plus sizes?". My trained eyed told me she was around a size thirty or so and I could see from the look on her face that it hadn't been an easy decision to pop by. She explained that she'd been putting this moment off for a while and that she didn't think she'd find anything that would ever look good on her. How ridiculous of her. But it breaks my heart to hear women say this, and I hear it often. Wedding dress shops can be intimidating, I have done my fair share of 'competitive shopping' and believe me, there are some snotty places out there just waiting to judge or dismiss in a second. Some bridal shops are so fancy that you're scared to touch, scared to tell the sales person "no" when she suggests something completely not you, too intimidated to try the dress in the window. At my place there's none of that. We are successful because we're built on good old fashioned... service.

So my lady turned up today a little bit anxious, a little bit excited, and fully expected that I'd have nothing for her to try and that she'd "never look good in anything". Her personality radiated, such a sweet, lovely lady with a great sense of humour. Which was a relief because at one point she got a bit stuck in a dress and it took a few "after three's" and "right, let's try again" in between giggles. All good fun. I knew from the outset what would suit and what wouldn't so I steered her in the right direction and an hour later we had found the perfect dress. A chiffon gown which was fitted to beneath the bust and floaty from there down. The sample didn't fit right but she could see past that and said those words, that music to my ears...."it's the one".

i always like a good chat with my brides, maybe I'm a bit nosey. But surely that's better than silence between two people? so I had a bit of a nosey into today's lady's life... second marriage, two sons, getting hitched in Mauritius just her, him and and the two sons. Mother died in March. That bit got me. And when the dress trying was all over and she emerged from the changing room she told me how she'd just had a "moment" in there. I wanted to just give her a giant hug and say nothing but that would be terribly inappropriate. But it happened anyway, when she left she told me I had made her feel real good about herself and that she had thoroughly enjoyed the experience, and then she hugged me.

It's not about posh sofas and lavish window displays when it comes to wedding dress shopping. Its about emotion, connection and...little moments. I'm pretty sure I'll see this lady again, once it's been stamped 'the one' it usually is the one. I'm sure she'll be back. Whether she does return or not, she made me realise just why I do this job.

Chris asked me the other day why I don't write down my bridal shop tales and post about wedding dresses and chew your ears off daily like I do his with stories about brides. I was a bit stumped really. He was right, why on earth was I not writing about this stuff? After all, its what I do every day, its what I love so much in my life right now. Its what I know so much about...the bridal industry. Of course you guys probably don't know how involved I am with the wedding world because apart from that little tiny diary up there in the top left which reads "I run a bridal shop by day...", I don't really speak much of it. But I think the time has come, to start sharing my knowledge and my SECRETS with you guys.

In case you haven't read my about me blurb then I'll fill you in. I manage a bridal shop full-time and its the cutest little shop, tucked away down by the sea. I love my job and I love twittering on all day about weddings with my lovely brides. There's the highs; for the most part folks are excited, smiley, chatty, I get to look at the loveliest dresses every day and the stress is minimal. There's the lows; stroppy brides, snooty companions (usually mothers), pushy companions (usually sisters), it can get lonely - I run the shop alone most days - and the money could be better. But if I did it for that, I wouldn't still be doing it, trust me.

I co-design the collections that we sell. We also sell these designs to other pretty boutiques across the country. It's nice to see someone walk away with a design that you made reality. Its even better to see their photos afterwards. It makes it all worthwhile. I really build a bond with my brides, after all I end up seeing them a fair bit in the lead up to the wedding. I love my brides.♥

Tea and scones please ma'am

Yesterday Chris and I visited the cutest most patriotic place ever...with the sweetest scones and the yummiest cream and the tastiest teas...mmmm can we go again please! I can't believe I've never actually been to the Tea Cosy am I mad?! It's so chintzy and eclectic and full of British memorabilia, old and new. It's full of kitsch, vintage bits n bobs and there's just too much to look at. I need a second visit just to take it all in. And it's family run, which I love. I could easily sit all Saturday afternoon and sip tea, munch finger sandwiches and nosey through the magazines out for your reading. But apparently there is a weekend table time limit. That sucks a bit but what else can they do when a place is so popular? I've found my new favourite place in town. I'll be seeing you again soon Tea Cosy.

Vintage Outfit Post | A vintage cocktail

The much awaited bank holiday (please can we do it again?) meant a number of do's to attend and a few outfits to compile. I fancied something a bit different to my usual so I went for a cocktail of styles in this weird eighties kinda get up. Funnily enough its actually an outfit built on foundations of some really lovely 1960's vintage pieces I own. Does that make sense? nah, nevermind. In plain English its a few nice bits I had in the wardrobe which I threw together and it turned out ok I think. That red dress is so cool...it's a 1960's silk mini dress and the label reads Harvey Nichols 'of Knightsbridge'.Oooh very posh.

Outfit Post...pastels, a bit of floral and a seaside walk

Pastel Friday

I totally love hanging out down the seafront. Especially on a Friday (when I should be at work) hanging out with my boy Chris. Who by the way, turned 30 yesterday...eek! He had a mini breakdown the night before and I didn't help by giving a quick dig about how he really should knock the smokes on the head and start being a tad healthier, preparing to be a dad (potentially), thinking about taking up some sort of exercise, blah blah... how annoying of me. But anyway, he woke the next morning to boiled duck eggs and a bag of treats for work. Krispy Kreme included. See, I am a good wife really.

Onto the outfit. I've had this blazer for a while now and been waiting to crack it out but the weather has been holding me back. But finally here in Brighton its warming up and pastels seem suitable. I've had these floral trousers for some years now and yay...they're fully back on trend! I am ashamed to say that I'm not wearing anything vintage, for the second post in a row now. This really is supposed to be more of a vintage clothing blog...but I just have so much good new stuff in my wardrobe right now. This outfit was perfect for today and the pastel pink blazer works so well with the beach hut backdrop. We went for a little walk down the seafront today and then visited the cutest very English tea rooms ever. And of course we took our baby out with us. That being our camera. We're totally in love with our camera and we just can't stop taking photos of stuff we like. I'll post some tomorrow, it was so cool. Mmmm scones, tea...perfect Friday.

Hot pink for a hot day

At last, the weather has blessed us! Halle-friggin'-lujah. Sorry, please excuse the dramatic opening...I'm just so pleased to see the sun. Us Brit's are just so hilarious when the weather changes. All of a sudden the shorts are out, the bikini's are on and the beaches are packed. Can you blame us? We probably get around three weeks a year of real hot temperatures, seriously. So what do a girl and a boy do on such a lovely day? well hit the beach of course! Chris and I feel so lucky to live in Brighton. Every day the sun shines here it feels like a holiday. My shop is on the seafront so I have to be careful not to take it all for granted. Last week I spent three lunches out of five on the beach, and that's kinda great. It's at that moment that I don't regret leaving my fashion job in the city a one bit and feel happy with the fact that I may not be making big bucks right now, but I've got my work life balance just right. I wore my new pink outfit yesterday, I don't usually wear pink, ever...but it's all over the high street and you kinda can't avoid it. My little ombre shorts are cute don't you think, but I must admit I feel they're too short for me! I was having a bad hair day too, thank god for the top bun.

So I'm feeling a little grey today, I just got back from the sunny Spanish South coast...it's expected. I had such a lovely little trip filled with sunshine, good food and breathtaking views. I took this little vacation with my parents, how sweet they were. We had such fun. The initial reason for the trip was because a good friend's hen party was planned and I so wanted to be part of it. So it was at then that mum decided she'd like to take dad away, I could tag along and hey presto...! we were on a flight out there. We stayed in the mountains behind Marbella and our villa was just....unbelievable. You have to go there! so charming. I had such a fun time, I think we laughed from the moment we left until the moment we landed back in this dreary rainy country! Spain is one of my favourite places, me and the husb have visited many times and we even tied the knot there (i really must do a post on that), so it's kinda special. Ahh Espana, I love you. x

How to wear...a Vintage Seventies Hippy Dress

I'm a little sad that its all about the nineties right now. Maybe I'm just that bit too old? Too old in the sense that I wore all that stuff in the nineties. I did the tie dye, the choker and the double denim. Don't get me wrong, I love it all and I don't deny I have just bought a cheeky pair of tie dye shorts and I have been rocking double denim...quite recently in this post actually. But is it me or has the nineties come along and knocked the seventies off the fashion map?! Hail to the seventies! This post is dedicated to you.

There are so many different looks when you think of the seventies; glam, disco, punk, hippy....70's fashion began where the 60's left off. So they say. The seventies look began as a reaction against the girly look of the sixties. Apparently the hippie style was all about being liberated. I just love that! It was a feminine, elegant and hugely influential look.

But how do you wear it without looking like you're playing dress up? Well in my opinion it's all about toning things down. You don't need to dress seventies head to toe, the dress alone is enough. I also make sure, as I do with all my vintage looks, that I don't look too...literal if you know what I mean? I don't want to literally look like a seventies throwback, I just want to be inspired by it and be lucky enough to wear a fabulous gown from it. So in short, I advise to find a wonderful authentic vintage 1970's hippy-esque dress and wear it with love. Don't overdo it, you only need to team with a few modern details; leather, skinny belts, chunky jewellery, some high heels. Bring it up to date.

So this is my fave seventies hippy-esque dress I own. It's so beautiful and it belonged to my nanny. I toughened it up with the leather jacket and I've got my slightly weird but beloved golden cow bell around my neck. You really could wear this dress a number of ways, but for a walk in the park, this was just right...

Blue Monday...Vintage Dungarees!

So it was Bank Holiday Monday yesterday and it rained again! Oh my gosh would the weather please sort itself out! Does it not realise that us fashion bloggers are just desperate for a bit of sunshine for some decent outfit posts?! how inconsiderate of you Mr weather. Anyways, onto more interesting things...here's my bank hol outfit which I indecesively decided upon yesterday for the brunch that the husb and I went out for. These are my much loved vintage dungarees! Aren't they just awesome? Ok they're a little snug on the old thighs but I'm determined to keep wearing them. I've had them about ten years so I'm ever so smug that they're back in fashion. But I wouldn't care if they weren't in fashion, I'd still wear them. I found some real nice vintage dungaree ensembles online that you guys might like...this re-made denim dungaree dress is adorable as are these little cord dungarees. I'm on a shopping ban for the next couple of months (saving for our Croatia trip) otherwise I would not hesitate in buying these vintage sixties floral dungarees!!!

I donned a little vintage lace bodysuit underneath (my mother's from the seventies...score!) and I'm also wearing her boots which I have officially stolen off her now (she really should get more credit on this blog). And because of that rain, damn rain (blah blah I hear you say, sorry! enough about the rain)...I finished it all off nicely with my trusty parka. Oh, and one last thing, that bag's my mums too....vintage baby!

The food we had was divine yesterday. We went to our fave hangout in the heart of the Brighton Laines and it does the best brunch ever. I always have the Bubbalicious, a stack of bubble n' squeak, bacon and poached egg and it's just yummy. I don't ever order anything else which may seem a little sad but hey, if you love something why not do it over and over?

Hey all. We're still experiencing rainy day after rainy day here and it's really starting to pee me off. I got my new camera (aka my 'baby') and I can't even get outdoors and use her! So infuriating. This time last year we were on the beach cookin' up bbq's and pulling up a deckchair. Not this year, no no no, it's just rain rain rain. Grrr....do you feel my pain?

Anyway, onto the outfit. Last night I was invited out and I made the rare weekday trip out. I decided to dress it up a bit so went for my beloved silky satin ombre (how on-trend!) vintage trousers. These 1970's beauts are pretty hard to wear but they just seem to work so well with my vintage bustier. And the necklace....ahh my beautiful and cherished necklace xx (my wedding day necklace but that's another day).

Yesterday was a fabulous day. The sun was out and I had just returned from an amazing hen weekend. So what better to do with your afternoon than go run in a pretty field? This outfit is a bit boring I do apologise but I was running out the house and after a weekend of dresses, heels and plenty of preening, I needed a day off. Do you know what I mean? I'll tell you more about the weekend tomorrow, with a more exciting outfit post, promise.

So here I'm wearing NO vintage, horror! I feel disappointed with myself. That maxi dress is from my good old fave Zara and the jacket is Topshop. I love my necklace though!! The peace heart. I found this on my travels in Spain and its damn heavy but it's worth it.

Ok, ok so I know it's been on the radar for a long time already now but I'm still as hyped about neons as I was when it first exploded onto the catwalks. I just love how there is so many interpretations of it...whether it be for clothing, for nails (this is my fave) for lips, for hair...(check out this great post about chalking your hair) or even for fur like the couple I've featured below. I've had this dress a while and I'm supposed to be putting it up for sale in the store but I'm not sure I can!! It's all swishy and floaty and pretty and the colour is to so on-trend! thought I'd team it with yellow, it works..? This little beaut of a hat is a 1970's original...another hand me down from my lovely nanny. Isn't it delightful? I was really damn annoyed today, I put this little outfit together in all it's Spring glory and stepped out the door ready for a Sunday afternoon out and then it poured! Hence the lack of photos and a finish off indoors. I was so sad. I had to get changed and get all wintry again. Damn you British weather, you fooled us again! I'll post tomorrow the wintry ensemble I had to (reluctantly) find in a moment of panic.

Today was one of those days where I just stared blankly into my wardrobe and failed to get inspired by anything. I was looking for comfort so tights so a dress wasn't an option (I'm just soooo much comfier in trousers). My hair was a mess so it had to go up, all in all I felt a bit of a mess. This look was a bit thrown together and I'm really not feeling the white on white but hey, I was in a rush and at least I pulled it together with a bit of monochrome accessorising. And my much loved Givency bag got involved so that made it all better.

A pair of shorts, three ways!

So at the weekend I got hold of some vintage Levi shorts. They're a little on the loose side but that was intentional. I don't/can't/won't rock the tight, hot pant so this baggy-ish look will do me just fine. When I got home I had this dilemma...now how should I actually wear them...

the 'grunge' look isn't really me so I'll avoid that. Don't get me wrong, I love it, but I'm just not convincing enough. I'm just not grungy. I love that band t-shirt, cut offs, beanie hat thing but frankly I just look stupid in all that. So here's three looks I've thrown together which are more 'me' and I hope you'll like too. And maybe they'll offer some denim short inspiration! It's amazing how versatile these little ol' shorts can be!

Think head to toe denim and a rucksack full of maps and binoculars and other geeky things like that. Don't be afraid to clash denims and for winter rock this look with some boyfriend jeans for a real boyish geeky chic look. I always chose tans and neutrals and muted reds for accessories, they just work best with the palette. But this could also look cool with neons maybe? try it!

I totally love this shirt. I found it in an amazing shop in Hong Kong and it was love at first sight. It's a bit like a cape and when I wear it with this bow tie I feel all 'gaucho'! I think the hat works perfectly with it. So this look is very evening, I wouldn't wear this for a Saturday shopping. I'd keep it for fancy drinks out. I don't like to look too polished, so the cowboy style boot and the understated bag keep things a bit...rough...if that's the word?

So I then thought about something else which might be useful and I thought, hey...a day through to evening post! So here's my little ol' shorts again and this time I've taken one outfit and styled it for a day at the office and then re-worked it for a evening on the town. I used to work in the city and commute home every day so I had a lot of practice at this. I always had to be prepared because we always used to have after work drinks. Don't get me wrong, I'd have a little stash of accessories in my desk drawer but usually I'd have to make one outfit go the distance. How exhausting!

So it's quite simple really, always think about your undergarment for starters. I had this little cute crop top hiding underneath my smart work shirt, just ready to unleash some midriff come night time! I kept my shorts long for the day and socks rolled down but for the evening I'd roll those shorts up high and pull the socks up over my knees for instant sexiness. (although I'm sure you guys will look a hell of a lot sexier than me!) I'm a big fan of the silky neck scarfs for work but not really in the evening. They're part of my work 'uniform' if you know what I mean? But I may not want to leave it behind at work and I may not have room in my bag for it. So...I'll just thread it through my belt loops and tie it in a cutesy bow. Final detail? roll those blazer sleeves up! This instantly says casually cool...just the look I was going for :)

Gold Revival.

Hey all! I'm not sure what look I'm going for here. Flasher?...Sporty-girly? Hell what does it matter. I like it and that's all that matters. The mac is one of those things that I just had to have but never really wear. Do you know what I mean? Don't get me wrong, I totally love it but it's impractical for three reasons - 1. It's beige so it get's dirty really easy and I hate the thought of getting my most loved possessions (being my clothes btw) grubby. 2. It's a bit snug and very slightly cuts into my armpits...ouch. 3. It's neither a summer coat or a winter coat, I suppose it's a Spring coat. But Spring doesn't last long. You get my situation.

So I'm loving peter pan cutesy collars right now. I like looking angelic but not too angelic so I'll always add something a bit edgy to toughen it up a bit. Hence the giant gold neck thing you can see me sporting. I bought this way back when plastic cut out jewellery was just emerging and you couldn't find it for £1 in Primark. It was from the fabulous Tatty Devine down near Brick Lane. Tatty Devine who put plastic jewellery on the fashion map. I used to wear it ALL the time, it's made from leather and plastic, I love that combo. For some reason its been hibernating in my drawer, maybe just waiting for a comeback? I thought I'd give it an airing today and remembered why I love that funny little gold cow bell. I'm going to bring it back from the dead and start wearing it again, with love.

A vintage dress, three ways.

So I thought I'd share with you one of my favourite wardrobe ensembles...this pretty little fifties dress. And to make it all that bit interesting I've styled it three ways! My Papa bought me this dress when I was dragging him and mum around the Brick Lane vintage stores one day. He only bought me it because it was £10! He doesn't like spending out, especially not on clothes. Mum has to twist his arm. But there was no twisting this time, he literally jumped into his pocket in fear of the seller changing their mind. What a bargain it was! Considering I bought it around four years or so ago, it is bang on trend right now with the pink and lime floral print. I love it!

So here's my 3 easy ways to play around with one look...

Toughen Up...

Toughen up your look and add edge to a girlie floral print with black and leather accessories. I've tried to make this look less prim by adding contrast with black tights and a studded belt.Dress - vintage, Belt - vintage, leather collar - asos, Boots - Russel & Bromley

Girlie Girl...

For the next look I've added a baggy look knitted top and cute alice band for a touch of sweetness. By doing so, I've re-invented by dress and nobody would guess if I'd worn it the previous day. Maximise that wardrobe! Knit - MaxMara, Shoes - New Look

Country Folk...

This is my fave. Pop on a boating hat and cute spotty cardi and you've got an instant 'country bumpkin-ish' look. Any colour socks would work and any straw hat would do but for a more vintage feel, go for the boater like me. Hat - vintage, Cardigan - Topshop, Brogues - asos

Get outta black.

When I looked back at these photos I realised that they have a bit of an 'urban' edge... I really don't like that word "urban" but what else can I use?! It wasn't intentional. We just wandered around Brighton the other day and just snapped me looking a bit awkward in between eating takeaway noodles and drinking tea. I love this cardi, it is so damn warm. It was just 10 degrees when we were out but I didn't need a coat! I love love these booties as well. I acquired them from my mother so they're true vintage and they're fab. I decided to totally clash prints with the cardi and the scarf. So wrong, but I like it. The sun was shining that day and everyone was out in their pastels and their brights but I just can't seem to make the break from black! Anybody else feel the same?!

I'm kinda not in summer mode at all. As I said, I just can't (correction- don't want to) break away from black. I love my black! But I really ought to do something quick about that as summer is fast approaching. Not that summer here in England is ever anything to write home about. If you blinked you would miss it. But that's our weather and I'm kinda happy with that. So seeing as its such a short affair (and one we should celebrate) I got making lists...more lists...(thats all I ever do, list this, list that, ignore the list, lose the list, then write another list). But this list was ten things I want to do this summer. I wonder if I can achieve it. If I put my mind to it I most surely can. In fact, correction- I will.

one. climb and really big tree and then have a picnic in it.

two. get a facial.

three. have a sleepover (girls only) and go out for breakfast in the morning.

four. try kite surfing.

five. go to a library, rent a book and read it in the sun.

six. visit where I used to live in London and reminisce in the local pub.

seven. buy some denim cut off dungarees and customize them.

eight. watch the news more, or buy the paper some days.

nine. go to some art exhibitions.

ten. make a cake. I have never (God's honest truth) ever made a cake. Slapped wrist deserved.
