Canian Valley a.k.a. Khandala Valley Trek -- B - E - A - UTIFUL

Hi,I, Shridhar Purandare, am back with one more trekking and admiring journey for travelers i.e. Khandala Valley or Canian Valley trek.

Best thing is its very close to Pune and connected will with road and rail. It was just exploring for me as I was going in there for first time. I, Seedalya, Bonbon and Adishri left Pune by 7am to reach Lonavala by 9am. With heavy breakfast we were ready to enter Canian track.

There was no place to put our helmets so we carried them with ourselves.

Now few things to know about Khandala Valley :

Popularly known as Khandal Dari or even Canian Track for some. This is the only place which is advised not to be visited in rainy season. The place is favorite of all trekkers. This place lies in between Rajmachi Point and Rajmachi fort. You come across Ulhas river in this valley. Easiest way to reach the bottom is to first reach the Kune point and then walk to the bottom.

We helped quite a few to descend down ... With helmets on our head we were looking quite funny ...

Cloudy weather is very good for treks .. less dehydration .. so less water to carry ....

At some points it was tough and slippery ...
Finally we were there at the base .. It was only river crossing left to reach our destination.
These guys from Hadapsar crossed it by help of Human chain ...
I tried too !! but reached half of distance ... Nobody of us was ready to give it a try ...

So after chilling I came back .. Hoping to cross it next time ..

Hi All Travelers,

I am back this time with my Europe tour for first time. Here I will be covering few cities in Europe which are very famous and tourist attractions.

1. Germany : Stuttgart,Berlin
2. Switzerland : Interlaken, Jungfrau (Top of Europe)
3. Italy : Venice,Rome

Before we begin our journey few tips:

1. Plan your visiting countries journey well before
2. Accordingly decide the route and places to visit.
3. Then decide which Euro-rail pass suits for you
4. Enjoy the ecstatic places

Don't forget to have a good passport and money holder with you all the time. Do never ever leave it anywhere.Euro's are accepted almost everywhere. You can also carry VISA or MASTER-CARD for safety. You will find Indian and Chinese hotel in almost all parts of Europe.

One of good ways to see the places is to take city guided tour bus. It will cost around 10-20 euro's but will be really helpful. You can hop on and hop off at any stop and can really explore the city.

My visits to all the cities were for only one day. So I used to find all the places I wanted a week before from internet. You can always get locker, shower, tourist information facility at railway station. Follow Lock, WC, i symbols to reach there.

About train journey, I must say that it is the best in class. You can plan for connecting trains with difference of few minutes. Trains are very spacious, clean and accurate.

Cautions of India citizens:
1. Follow the queues. Nobody will complain if you don't but no need to show Indian attitude.
2. While walking or driving keep right.
3. Don't throw any garbage and don't spit

Bhimashankar Trek via Shidichi Vat

Hi All Trekkers,

I was planning for Bhimashankar Trek via Shidichi Vat trek since long but was never successful until 18th of July when finally it came true for me.

Bhimashankar Temple is located in the village of Bhorgiri 50 km north west of Khed, near Pune, in India. It is located 110 km away from Pune in the Ghat region of the Sahyadri hills. Bhimashankar is also the source of the Bhima river, which flows south east and merges with theKrishna river near Raichur. The other Jyotirlinga shrines in Maharashtra are Parli, Tryambakeshwar and Grishneshwar. Regular pilgrims near Mumbai visit Bhimashankar from Karjat via Khandas. The Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary located here is a popular weekend getaway from Mumbai and Pune.

I and Rajiv planned for this trek on Saturday 17th July. Abhijeet joined us later. Rajiv came to Karjat from Nerul while I and Abhi took Sinhagad Express to reach Karjat by 8.15am on 18th July.

We reached Kashela by MSRTC and Khandas by a six converted to unlimited sitter. Half of mine and Rajiv's body was hanging outside for that 12km journey.

We planned to go by Shidichi vat but all villagers and trekkers around fooled us by saying it is dangerous and could not be completed in Rainy season. We thought to give a chance. We found one group from Pune who knew this route and followed them as guide was charging too much.

Apparently group leader was confused about the way and started asking every villager in the way. So we took decision making in hour hand and took help of one villager and headed towards destination.

Abhi and Rajiv were little conscious about us finding wrong way. But I was confident about finding correct way due to previous experience. One more time villagers threated us about the risky way but still we continued.

We met two people on the way who knew the route exactly so now we were relaxed. As we progressed , we found that it is the steepest way to top. We did find first Shidi after half an hours trek. Fortunately it was new and was replaced recently.

Few tricky rock patches and two more Shidi's took us to top and we realized that we just covered half way. :( Now the other route to top i.e Ganapati ghat also joined our route and number of trekkers increased a lot.

We took breakfast break and then continued towards new discovered top. Due to lack of stamina I was slowest while Abhi was very fast ( We knew afterwards that he was chasing someone ;) ). Within 4 hours we reached the Bhimashankar temple.

We ate lunch(Misal,Bhaji and Tea),took Kalas darshan, bought some Prasad and boarded return bus by 3pm. MSRTC safely( only Abhi got some ST prasad on hsi right ear) dropped us at Shivajinagar.

After all this hectic trek I saw Khidakya play in Sudarshan Rangmanch from 7-9 pm and the went to Relatives home for rest. Hot water bath was never felt that beautiful :).

Trek to Purandar fort

Hi All,

Welcome to my blog. Here I will take you to journey to my own fort i.e. Fort Purandar :)
After long time I enjoyed fresh air,wind,rain and nature. It was awesome experience to travel on bike to the fort.

Purandhar fort stands 4,472 ft. above the sea (1,387 m) in the Western Ghats, 20 miles southeast of Pune. It actually consists of two forts - Purandar and Vajragad (or Rudramal). The latter is the smaller of the two and is on the eastern side of the main fort. The village Purandar takes its name from this fort.

Bhigwan Bird Watching

Hi All,

This was the first time when I enjoyed watching 10s of different and beautiful species of birds specially Greater Flamingo, that too not far from my home in Pune.

Bhigwan is a small dusty town on the border of Pune and Solapur district in Central Maharashtra. Bhigwan is located on the Pune-Solapur Highway. The distance between Pune city center and Bhigwan is 105 km. One can travel to bhigwan by various means of transportation.

How to Reach Bhigwan ?? 1) State Transport Buses bound for Solapur and onwards from Pune take you to Bhigwan in 3.5 hours. The obvious advantage of ST bus, is that one need not drive. However Bhigwan is a vast area. The birding spots are as far away as 10 to 15 kms from Bhigwan main town. So this mode is not convenient. Some of the Solapur/Chennai bound fast trains stop at Bhigwan. There are couple of trains which start from Pune at early dawn and will take you to Bhigwan by early morning ( 2 hour travel time). Check time table for the details. 2) The next possible option is obviously personal car or vehicle. This mode of transport is the best. In personal vehicle one can carry complete Photography kit. for example,laptop can be carried to download images when cards are full etc. However there is one issue with the car or personal vehicle. Important birding locations are located at about 10 kms from Bhigwan. The roads are very narrow. For example road from Diksal to Bhilarwadi Sugar factory (The main Birding road) is very narrow. It is simply not possible to do free birding as one can not halt the car on this road arbitly. Also the Babhli bushes are having thorns which rub against your precious car outer surface damaging the paint of car. So if you are taking car here, forget about the paint. One has to park vehicle at convenient parking spot and walk. Road to Dalaj-Kumbharwadi area of Bhigwan is bit car friendly. 3) For the more adventurous guys, two wheeler can be used to reach this place from Pune. Though bit unsafe, the distance can be covered in less than 3.5 hours as the road is flat with medium traffic. Two wheeler is very convenient to cover the vast Bhigwan area. However one should not take two wheeler on road/way in marshy area around water body or river.

Malvan bash

Hi All,

I am back after long intermission with my next travel blog. This time its about the best beaches in India. I am not overstating. I have seen Coastal Karnataka, Goa and all of the Konkan but hardly found such a fine coastal line.Here I am talking about Malvan.Malvan (Marathi: मालवण) (also written as Malwan) is a town inSindhudurg District - southernmost district of Maharashtra. The pristine water, Malvani Hapus(Alphonso) mango, best in class hospitality, luxuriant sea food, snorkeling and corals are few of the attractions in Malvan.

Malvan is about 460 kms away from Pune. Journey started from Pune with Kolhapur,Gaganbawda and Kankawali stops to reach Malvan city. Its completely non commercialized city. Malvan ST stand is at the center of the city. From here you can get to Devbag,Tarkarli or Sindhudurga.

Devbag is a narrow land portion having river on one side while Arabian sea on other side. Its 12km south of Malvan. Its enough of description in textual format. Now believe what you see ...

Dhak Bahiri Trek -- Easy but Tricky

From long time I was suppose to do Dhak trek. Due to misfortune and bad luck I always missed it. This time I decided to do it in any cost. The date 6^th March was fixed. Hrishya told me that he will join me. I was happy because he has done Dhak 4 times before, removing need to hire any guide. J

Trek details

The path to the cave is amazing, presenting views of Dukes Nose and Rajmachi. We do pass one small pinnacle on right as we descend last time to deal with tricky rock patch. One fatal mistake will be the last mistake of your life on this patch. Adequate safety is provided on the route. But if you have Acrophobia (fear of height) then this is the place where you can conquer it!!!!

Fall of 100 feet is on you left as you do the traverse and rock climb. Hardly few inch of ground to make contact and take grip. Be careful and you will enjoy the patch. We completed it in 15 minutes while ascend and 10 minutes while descend.

I am dying to do it in Monsoon!!! Enjoy the pics now ...

Tip: You can chant "Dhakachya Bhairiche Changabhale" while you cover the rockpatch which will make you feel safer.

Canon Photo Marathon 2009 - Mumbai

Hi All,

I have been doing trekking and adventure sports since long time. With that I also developed interest for photography a bit. Mother Nature provokes you to snap the amazing things she has created. With time it became my hobby. I used to see the picture in very different manner. It does not mean that I am professional. It’s just that a lot of photography make you look at things in different manner.

I thank Shrikant Shimpi and Sameer Phanasalkar to provide me valuable inputs on how to handle camera’s different features and Dhawal to introduce me with this event. I was first thinking not to participate. But then it was something new that I could do. It will also give me opportunity to look at photography in different way.

I finally decided to go for it as there was no trek on that weekend. I registered my name online. Canon representatives called me for confirmation. I was give with Id number. It was going to get interesting for me. I started spending time in looking my camera features, asking friends about photography and searching on internet about Canon photo marathon. I looked at previous winner’s snaps also. Through this time I have learned that photography is all about timing.

Finally the day arrived. I was on the train for Dadar. Canon photo clinic is situated in shopping mall in Varli. I changed to local from Dadar to Mhalakshmi. I took help of BEST reaching final destination. The mall was huge, having showrooms of almost all types of great brands. Rolls – Royce, Bose, Canon and Haka were few of them. There were almost hundred photographers present to make an impression. Almost all of them were having SLR cameras with different lens attachments.

With my Canon S5 IS, I was feeling so outdated!!! Still I decided to give my best.The competition was theme based. There was one hour to take snap for that theme.

Themes given to us were

Freedom ( I snapped eagle flying high)
Standing Out ( I captured 100 year old building in Varli standing out of other modern infrastructure)
On the Job ( I caught an eagle catching fish)

Satisfied with all the pictures I was very happy at the end of the day. I was very happy trying few new things which I did while clicking those snaps. I literally went into Varli slums. I almost scanned it. I also climbed on top of Mandir to get rid of 100 year old tower. I waited patiently for eagle to catch the fish.

It was nice to have many friends from photography domain (Use of IT language is must for me J). I returned to my sister’s home in Thane and next day to Pune.

Overall its very nice experience and I intend to appreciate in all similar events in future.

Diveagar -- Konkan Feast

It's long ago since I wrote my previous blog. I apologize for that.

I visited sea-coast long back in Nov last year. Thrust of enjoyment on beach was now unstoppable. So I decided to do a coastal ride on bike. Biking in Konkan was always my dream. With this trip it went real. Seedalya and I decided to do something new on this trip. After long thoughts we finally agreed on tented stay and camp fire on beach of Diveagar. We felt that there should be no one in between sea waves and us. Adi's tent made it really easy. All this planning was done on Fri evening.

Trip Details:

Total expenses : 1000 Rs per head which includes ( Petrol for bike and all eatables)

Total kms 600

Route:

Day 1: Pune (5am)- Chandani Chauk - Tamahni Ghat(6.20) - Mangaon (7) - Veer - Mhaprat - Manddangad(9.30am) - Anjarle(11am) - Kelashi (12pm) - Bankot - Harihareshwar (5pm) - Shrivardhan(5.30) - Diveagar(6pm)

Day 2: Diveagar (11 am) - Shrivardhan - Diveagar (3.30pm) - Mhasla - Mangaon (4.15pm) - Tamhini Ghat - Pune (8pm)

Stay at Diveagar beach (tent was carried)

On Sat 13th Feb, I woke up at 4am. After 30 minutes of packing and revising I was ready to go. I did not think of winter though and moved with just T - Shirt and jean . Seedalya join me at Chandani Chauk by 5am. Within next few kms I felt as if I am travelling in Jammu and Kashmir. It was very cold till Paud passed. I wore double layer and went ahead. A tea stall open at 5.30 am, made me happiest person on earth. After few cups of tea I was now recharged. Now I was able to sense my hands a bit ,which were frozen by the cold. Seedalya was wearing gloves so he was comfortable.

We stopped in Tamhini to snap Konkan from good height. Then we took breakfast break at Mangaon on NH17. Now it was time of skilled driving. Next 80 kms to Anjarle was complete Ghat road. Very risky and lots of u turns. Madangad fort was on the way and we managed to drive bikes to top. Not much to view on the fort though. We left for Anajarle. We visited Kadyavarcha Ganapti which is believed to be very old(From Peshawe era). It was time to chill now. Avala, Karvande, Mango, Jambhul sharbat was on cards. After visiting the beach we went for Kelashi.

Kelashi is very small village with a clean beach. Its totally clean and lonely. We took lunch on beach hotel and went to peek the beach. After some time we left for Bankot from where ferry will take you on other side.

Next destination was Harihareshwar famous as holy place. Lord Shiva and Kalbhairav temples are present here. We did Pradakshina to temple while looking at rock formations.

By 5pm we left for Diveagar hoping to see sunset at the beach. Road was very good and we drove into Diveagar in no time. Sunset at beach is very special and beautiful.

We were very much excited to setup the tent. But I can not do with empty stomach. We had booked our dinner at Suhas Bapat. He provides excellent pure veg dinner at Rs 60. You can get Ukadiche Modak for Rs 8 each. I took lots of them with me and went to Surve's home where I ordered Surmai and Paaplet(Pomfret) fry. With authentic Konkani recipe they tasted delicious.

Now with full stomach we went ahead to setup tent and camp fire on the beach. We carried head torch as light source. Tent was setup within moments and then fire was also on. I stolen few timber sticks from compound of one Villa near beach. Finally we were converting our dream to reality. I felt 100% satisfaction as I felt asleep hearing waves which were few meters away. Seedalya was busy gazing stars and clicking few of them with his Canon 1000 D.

Next day I woke up late. I was enjoying surroundings of my bed a lot. Tourists started flooding the place by 9 am. We entered sea to taste power of waves and play with them. After an hours enjoyment we were packing our belongings. Within half an hour we were off to do Breakfast. We went to Surve's home for breakfast. Tea, Pohe and Upma was on cards. We requested them to use their Bathing facility.

It was fun to discuss the Konkan condition in general with the locals. They told us stories about different guests they attended to. After cleaning ourselves we went for Coconut and Mango ice-creme. It was fresh and tasty. As our lunch was planned at 1.30 pm we decided to ride towards Shrivardhan. The route accompanies coast and provides amazing views. We spotted lots of migrated birds on the way and decided to catch them in our cameras. We parked our bike on road and walked a short trail to rocky area where birds were in huge numbers. As we tried to go close they used to fly away. So we sat down at one place and tried our zoom power. It was awesome to see them flying in huge numbers. After 100s of pics clicked we were off again to Diveagar for lunch. This time we were at Potnis's home for lunch. As always Seedalya ate veg food while I enjoyed Surmai Thali and Solkadhi.

Now it was time for fun ride on the beach. We drove our bike through sand to take into the waves. Riding along the wave was immense fun. We found birds here too and clicked few cool shots. With complete gratification we started our journey back to Pune. With two tea stops at Mangaon and Tamhini we were back in Pune by 8pm.

It was very different trip for me with no trekking at all. Just fine biking through Coastal Konkan.

Malshej Waterfall Rappelling -- Most scenic rappelling ever

Hi, I, Shridhar Purandare am back with the most scenic rappelling extravaganza i.e. Malshej Waterfall Rappelling.

InVenture endeavors hits new milestone by completing this very scenic still very dangerous venture near Nagar district. This Malshej waterfall is situated near Pimpalgaon dam on Kalu river.

Height of waterfall is about 1300ft which is distributed amongst 5 patches. All these patches are very much challenging for even experts. While you rappel down you see most scenic views of Sahyadri with Harishchandragad range. Waterfall will always accompany you till very end of last patch.

This was first huge pilot event that InVenture was going for in year 2009. We all were very confident of doing it though. I, personally am very confident of rappelling as I have done it 10s of times. So I decided to to lead our campaign.

We carried food,water,ropes, petzl equipments, helmets and walkies. We made sure we followed all security measures that can be followed. We left Pune by 6am and reached Khubi at 10am. We trekked to top of Mashej waterfall in half an hour. Now it was time for rope fixing.

Within few minutes we fixed our first rope .. while I was getting ready for rappelling. Rappelling first is very dangerous task as there is no one to control if you lose your grip over the rope. On overhang if you start circling then its nightmare. Because the speed of circulating gets fast and you will get unconsious in few minutes. So you also have tio maintain calm and give feed to rope. When doing first patch I was also supposed to remove the loose rocks on the way. On the overhang I started cuirculating and I sensed urgency to reach the bottom. After few 10s of circles my head started feeling giddy. It did not stop me from feeding the rope. Afterf ew minutes I reached to bottom. As soon as my feet touched surface of 1st patch, I was the happiest person on the earth. I rested for few minutes and gained total control over my body.

Now it was time for others to rappell down. My role was changed to controller of their descend. We repeated for next patch. With 2.5 kg of chicken and few crabs our night was full of yummie cusines. With the waterfall few 10ft from us we went to bed. We did repeate the same on next day. Chilling out in the huge swimming tanks was additional work that we did. By late noon we reached Thitabi where our bus was waiting for us. With lunch cum dinner we returned to Pune by 10pm.

One more thing to mention. Mani Ratnam movie Ravana's shooting , starring Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan, has been carried out in his area. The spot which was amazing few months back is converted into hell like a thing. The are which was surrounded by jungle is now made accessible by road. They have created road till the end. Trees ans surroundings taking a toll. Cement,plaster and many such things have been left at that place. Big damage ha been done to place already.
The producer should take this matter seriously and clear all that mess up. We just hope that all forest permissions were taken to break those trees and destroying jungle.

Some company from Mumbai is also building dam on the way back to Thitabi village. So may be in next 2-3 years this waterfall will not exist. We are fortunate enough to see and rappel this place many times.

Trekking with Safety makes adventure real fun

Trekking has become an integral part of urban life today. Trekking is an adventure of sorts, where you pitch your stamina and endurance against nature. People from the cities often travel to remote locations to trek and explore new areas. Most of India's major cities have rocky terrain around them. And nowadays, even schools take children out on treks to nearby locations.

My heart feels low when I hear death news of trekkers around the Sahyadri. They die off Tikona.. They die off Torna .. They die off Vasota.. Its really unfortunate to die while clicking picture on the edge of fort wall. Its sad to die due to lack of information about the weather,path,depth of valley and trekking techniques.

All this is inspiring to me to write this blog about trekking safety and precautions. I have searched whole lot of online media available for trekking to compile this article. many trekking articles, blogs and sites has helped me to put this list about trekking safety .If following or reading my blog saves one life then it will be happiest moment in my life.

I am trekking since last 3 years and have worked in company of very experienced trekkers. As a professional trekker now and a InVenturer I will be covering every aspect of trekking that I know. Feel free to add yours by commenting the blog.

1. Know where you are going with help of maps,google,blogs,wikipedia or friends who have already visited.

2. Always travel in numbers which will reduce chances of any major accident. It will improve chances of rescue.

3. If you are traveling alone prepare yourself well with maps,water,energy bars,medic and a lot more things.

4. Start trek early in the morning which will reduce water requirements and weight to carry.

5. Take only those things that you need.

6. One of my friend taught me how to pack sack. Fold your cloths as you fold your sleeping bag and then put them into your sack. When your sack is filled put it on floor and check whether it fells.If it fells down then fill it again.

7. Less the weight you carry more you are comfortable and more you will enjoy the trek.

8. If possible always take locals with you for help in direction,carrying extra luggage,preparing food and lot more.

9. Locals do have exact knowledge of the area,geographic diversities,water sources.

10. Don't try be over smart and over daring on the edges of the forts.

11. These forts are centuries old, we can not predict its strength at edges.

12. Always wear full trousers and full shirt. It will reduce chances of snake bite, bees attack and other jungle threats. It will also reduce sunburn.

13. Always carry first aid kit.

14. Choose your shoes wisely. Good grip and light weight is good combination.

15. In Sahyadri most time BSNL gives good coverage. I know two such accidents where the trekkers called police after the accident and were saved. So I personally think that you should have one BSNL card.

16. If you are going out in forest area in Monsoon or just after it then beware of leeches.

17. If you are trekking in forest reserve then before sleeping do make fire which will last for whole night besides you. It will keep most of the creatures away.

18. While swimming in the water tanks on the fort be very careful. Make sure that everybody knows that you are swimming. Try not to swim deep in the tank. Just swim on the shore.

19. There is lots of information available online on how to fix the rope, how to give belay,how to make body harness from rope, how to tie different knots and much more. Do go through all or most of it.

20. Don't walk alone. Accidents do happen even to experienced and strong people. Be sure that if one happens to you, that someone is with you to immediately get help. If you are leaving your companions, even briefly make sure they no where you are going and someone waits for you to return...this includes going off in the forest for a call of nature.

21. If you are part of a trekking group, make sure that the Guide or Group Leader knows your plan and ask that a Porter accompanies you. Listen to advice. Ask about the trail ahead. Don't go, if the Guide or Group Leader tells you it is not safe to do so.

22. Always have at least a light jacket and some small snacks in your pack. The jacket is helpful when you stop for a rest as you will cool down quickly. An "emergency blanket", the lightweight, foil reflective type would have been very useful in making a shelter to reflect heat from the fire or simply wrap around her body.

23. If you are part of a group and feel that you must have some personal space and private time on the trail...make sure that you do not go ahead of the leader.... and know who is at the back of the group (support staff member) and make sure you do not get behind that person. If your Guide or Group Leader does not suggest this type of an arrangement....ask them. Everyone in the group should be aware of the guidelines (safety rules) recommended for the group's management. Don't perceive these guidelines to be limiting your personal freedom....they are for your safety and the safety of other group members.

24. Remember when one person fails to be guided by safety standards, they put others at risk who are part of the search and rescue team.

25. Always carry pocket knife , matchbox,water-purification tablets,torch and a compass for all your treks. You may never know when you will need it.

26. Always take near by police station and ambulance numbers.

27. When trekking, always watch where you are placing your feet. This will minimize the chance of stepping on a loose rock and spraining an ankle or stepping on a snake that's too lazy to get out of your way - It happens!

28.Many people are unaware that snakes are actually deaf. They can tell that something is coming their way by the amount of vibration that they feel through the ground. If you are in an area where you think that snakes might be active, do them the courtesy of letting them know you're coming by walking a little heavier. Just as a safety precaution a snakebite bandage should be carried in a pocket for quick access. You know what they say about Murphy's Law - The day you haven't got it is the day that you'll need it.

29. Think of your body as a kind of a vehicle. You will need to tune it, modify it, and fit it out with aftermarket accessories to suit off road conditions.

30. Choose a walking pace that you feel you could comfortably keep to for an hour. Try to keep to the same pace and try not to vary your speed unless absolutely necessary. Remember it's not a race.

31. Try to synchronize your breathing. Breath in for two steps, breath out for two steps and so on. If this method works for you it will take you a lot further and use less energy. Your body will function a lot more efficiently.

32. Aim for regular rest breaks. A good rule of thumb is one ten minute break at the end of every one hour of trekking. If you are in a rhythm and are reasonably fit this should be ample.

33. Never underestimate the power of nature. There is a fine line between a friendly stream and a deadly torrent. This subject could be covered in great depth and eventually we'll provide a more comprehensive version, but for the time being here are a few points to keep in mind: Decide where you are going to cross based on your view from a vantage point or by consulting your topographic map.

The widest part of a river can often be the safest because this is where it is often shallowest and slowest.

If you find a dry crossing beware of slippery moss covered rocks and logs.

Don't underestimate distance if you have to jump.

Undo the harness of your pack to enable a quick escape if you fall in.

If you have to wade across, try to face upstream as it will be much easier to keep balance.

Use a strong stick or trekking pole to keep balance while crossing.

It is usually better to keep your boots on. Crossing a river barefoot over slippery submerged rocks can be both dangerous and EXTREMELY painful.

34.Trekking - Gear check list

The following is an extended checklist. It includes all the gear that you are likely to need. Of course if you were to carry it all your pack would probably weigh a lot more than you would prefer. The idea is to select from the list the items that you are most likely to need and leave the rest at home. This list signifies the importance of having compact, lightweight gear. The lighter and more compact your equipment, the more you are able to carry and consequently, the better prepared you will be to handle any given situation. This is particularly important if you plan to do multi-day solo treks.

Experience is always the best teacher. Eventually you will refine the list below to suit your own individual system.

NOTE: Items that are marked with * may be considered optional if alternative equipment/methods are being used or only required in specific situations such as cold climates etc. The equipment list below is a guide only and commonsense should prevail when packing for a specific outdoor adventure.

35. Building a fire in the wrong place will not only destroy the surrounding plants, it will also destroy the living organisms and microbes that live in the soil beneath, rendering that patch of soil useless for supporting plant life for a long time afterward. In addition, the natural beauty of the area is also scared. A good place to set a camp fire is on sand or gravel. This will have minimal environmental impact and when you've finished with it and the fire is completely extinguished simply scatter the ashes and cover the site with the existing sand or gravel. There will be little if any evidence that you were even there. A flat rocky area also makes for a good fire place but cover the rock with sand or gravel first. When you are finished, simply tidy up what's left and wash the area down with water to remove any unsightly evidence that someone was there.

36.Toilet facilities

This can be one of the most daunting activities to the first time trekker/bush camper. In fact it is responsible for preventing many would-be trekkers from taking up the sport in the first place. Some people just can't cope with the thought of 'squatting in the bush'. In all honesty though, it's no big deal and is a requirement of nature that the human mind soon becomes very comfortable with. You would be surprised just how quickly you adapt. It is sad that many people refrain from entering an activity like trekking because of this requirement of nature. As this is an area that some newcomers can find embarrassing to talk about we are more than happy to answer any 'anonymous'

Research seems to indicate that many newcomers are concerned about losing balance while making a contribution. If you have concerns in this department try choosing a site with a small tree close enough to use as a 'hand rail'.

On a more serious note, disposing of your contribution must be carried out in the correct manner. Using a small trowel, pre dig a hole about 15 to 20 cm deep. If there are no fire bans in place any toilet paper should be burnt and the hole filled in. Calls of nature should be answered well away from walking tracks and at least 100 meters away from water courses to prevent contamination.

37.What your carry in must be carried out. Take all rubbish what you make with you to your home. Do not spoil nature.

38.How to choose a good, safe camp site

Each year campers and trekkers around the globe are injured or worse due to inexperienced decisions regarding camp sites. There are a number of things to look for in a possible site that will help ensure that you have a safe and comfortable stay.

Drainage

If you were to get a downpour overnight does the site have sufficient runoff?

River banks

If camping near a river are you situated high enough to account for a sudden rise in water level? Flooding in areas hundreds of kilometres away can cause sudden water level changes much further downstream.

Below cliffs

If camping below cliffs ensure that there is an overhang that will deflect any falling rocks.

Among trees

Camping under trees can be particularly dangerous. News articles have in the past published headlines like "Freak accident - camper killed by falling tree while sleeping" Sadly these are rarely 'freak accidents' but are more likely to be 'accidents waiting to happen'. Inexperienced outdoors enthusiasts often make the mistake of forgetting to look up before pitching. If there is any chance of a tree or tree branch falling on your tent move somewhere else. You are not in a good, safe camp site especially if it's windy

Open exposed areas

These are not ideal campsites due to the possibility of high winds but if you need to camp in such a place ensure that your tent is securely guyed down. There is nothing worse that having to crawl out of a warm, comfortable sleeping bag in the middle of the night to secure your tent.

Getting acquainted with the locals

Before setting up camp it pays to have a good look around to see if any 'locals' have already claimed the spot. Wasps, mosquitoes, leaches, bull ants are among the many species that can make your stay a miserable one. Before getting too comfortable it might be a good idea to boil the billy and observe the prospective site over a mug of brew. A more suitable site may be just a short distance away.

Coastal camp sites

At the risk of stating the obvious, when camping by the ocean be sure to camp above the high tide mark. You would be amazed at how often this is overlooked.

Hi, Welcome my most thrilling jungle trek. I and Shrikant planned in few days. We bot were having the week free. First we thought about Salher and Salota but finally decided to go for Prachitgad and Kandhar doh.

Some information for trekkers:
1. Money: about Rs.1000 for guides + food + petrol
2. Village to start: Pune -> Koyna Nagar- > Patharpunj (trek starts from here) It can also be started from Konkan region.
3. Maps: Maps are not available. Local guide is compulsory.
4. Things to carry: 3 lits water, Food items for two days, full track pants, medicines and tent for living.
5. Name and number for the guide is not available.

Prachitgad (also known as Uchitgad or Rangna) is a in the Sahyadri mountain range in Maharashtra, India. It covers an area of 5 acres.

Location

It is located within Ratnagiri district at Shringarpur. The closest city is Devrukh which is 19 km away. Patharpunj is located 18kms away. This Fort comes in Chandoli forest reserve in Sangli district.

Its exact date of establishment is not known but it dates to before 1500 CE.

It has an outer wall and an inner wall. The outer wall is still intact while the inner wall is in ruins. There is a well, a temple and five guns within the fort. It can only be accessed by means of a ladder. many water cisterns available with clean water available throughout the year.

It was the scene of battle between the Marathas and the British in 1818, at which the British won.

Hi, Welcome back .. Here is my first ever foreign trip. It was for 22 days to Germany. I was pretty lucky to get my first ever project from Germany.

Within Germany what you will observe is amazing cleanliness and discipline. Germans are best at it. Apart from that engineering and science is applied to fullest.

In Germany ,people are very warm in hospitality.They enjoy and respect what they do.I loved whatever I have seen of Germany.

Now what I can say about Paris?? The dream city for those who love art work, paintings, monuments and culture. You will enjoy more when you see the pics below .. Now enjoy the journey to Munich and Paris.

Highways here truely represent highways .. They connect whole Europe very well .. We drove around 2500kms in 26 hours or so .... Mohan was driving one car while Saurabh other one...

Now we start with museum in Munich .. it was huge museum covering most areas like engines,boats,ships,music and what not ...

Welcome to my Konkan blast ... It was long ago in 2007 but my finest tour with CFI. It was in full Mango season and in the Region which is root for it :) What could be more fun ...

Attaching it was various fish varieties to taste ... With Adventure sport on the beaches of Konkan it was dream come true for me ..

Dona Paula is very good place to view Marmagoa harbor .. There is love story behind this place ... You can visit the market too ...

Named after Dona Paula de Menezes, this place is called the Lovers Paradise due to a myth that has been attached to this place. According one legend the Viceroy's daughter after facing objections from her family about her love affair with a poor fisherman jumped of the cliff.
Cathedrals and Churches in Goa are huge in structure .. They are beutifully built and are main attraction for the tourists.

Ample supply of Goan Fish Cusines is one fo the reason of my visit to Goa.

Beaches here are evergreen ... They provide peach of mind .. Adventure sports ... And lot more :)

Most important lively streets...

We enjoyed it most for four days ..Even if we were not able to cover all we tried to cover what is best ..

We started our journey by 10pm ... Full time pass in the bus with all enthusiastic singers and dancers !!! We met Mumbai group at Dehari .. Few of them left behind to guide us ..

We started the trek around 2am from Dehari .... A girl gave away her will power after 20 mins walk .. Somehow we convinced her to come with us to top ..The tricky steps way came up and slowed us down .. I and Dhawal were leading way checking difficulty for different patches ...

Finally by 5am we reached caves and everybody Hushhedddd !!!!

Wee hours provided us beautiful views throughout the trek

As most people preferred to rest in the cave .. Few of us started to cruise to top of Gorakhgad ... The path is again tricky with one rock patch ...

Finally we were on top ... It always provides me joy of accomplishment ....We also tried few weird things with VJ ... Haha That was funny !!!

Descending was as tricky as climbing ... But we did it successfully with utmost care...It was time for group photo ... Some brilliant and cute memories will stick to this photo...

Next day we started descending after doing some easy rappelling in front of the caves ... The way and the deep valley was very clear now ... So everybody was very cautious ...

Finally it was time to look back at our achievement ... Mission accomplished .. !!!

Rajgad fort to Torna fort -- An Awe-Inspiring Chronicle

I, Shridhar Purandare, am back with one more trekking and admiring journey for travelers i.e. Rajgad to Torna trek. My brother Aditya joined me for this trek. When we completed Rajgad descend to Pali road he quit as it was getting tougher. Then it was time to show trekking experience as I alone had to complete it. Most exciting thing was I was doing this trek for first time and I was alone with a dog who followed us from Rajgad. But that's made this trek special for me. Patience, Endurance, Toughness and Courage was tested on each curve and rock patch.

History about Rajgad :

This fort is built on the hill called "Murumb Devacha Dongar" Rajgad boasts the highest number of days stayed by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj on any fort.
This fort has witnessed lots of historic events, including the birth of Rajaram Chhatrapati, the death of Shivaji's Queen Saibai, the return of Shivaji from Agra, the antyayatra of Tanaji Malusare to his Konkan village, the burial of Afzal Khan's head in the Mahadarwaja walls of Ballekilla, the strict words of Sonopant Dabir to Shivaji, and the Khandoji Khopade episode. The diameter of the fort at the base is 40 km making it difficult for anybody to lay siege to it.

History about Torna Fort:

This fort is believed to have been constructed by the Shaiva Panth, followers of the Hindu god Shiva, in the 13th century. A Menghai Devi temple, also referred to as the Tornaji temple, is situated near the entrance of the fort.
In 1643, Shivaji, son of a local jagirdar with royal ambitions, captured this fort at the age of sixteen, thus making it one of the first forts in what would become the Maratha empire. Shivaji renamed the fort Prachandagad, and constructed several monuments and towers within it.
In the 1700s, the Mughal empire gained control of this fort after assassination of Shivaji's son Sambhaji. Aurangzeb, then Mughal emperor, renamed this fort Futulgaib (Language unknown: Divine victory), in recognition of the difficult defense the Mughals had to overcome to capture this fort. It was restored to the Maratha confederacy by the Treaty of Purandar.

Tips after completing this trek: Carry at least 3 liters of water per head, Medical kit is compulsory, BSNL phone for emergency, Don't go alone until and unless you are experienced trekker, Leave as early as possible because Sun shine will make it tougher for you, in the late noon it rains heavily so reach at destination or cover as much distance as you can before 3-4pm, if you have acrophobia do not do this trek, avoid traverses of hills on Rajgad -Torna route at the budhala machi end
From here on you will get stunned by the beauty of Sahyadri.

Rajgad view from Gunajavane road. Right to left peaks are Balekilla, Duba, Chilkhati Buruj, Suvela Machi. We reached Gunjavane by 8.30am and started trek by 9.20 am. We also told hotel owner to bring our dinner on the fort. Menu was simple ( Pithale, Bhakari, Kanda ani Thecha).

Mother nature will mesmerise you time and again on this journey. So do not hesitate to say "Wow !!!!" "Aai Shappath!!!" "Ek number !!!" "Lai bhari lai best !!!" "Fantastic !!!" " Nadkhula !!"

We climbed up 30 percent and Sun light slowed us down a bit. From this point real climb starts.

Climb to Chor darwaja is easy if you know how to take support of rocks and railings.

We reached Rajgad top by 11pm. This door belongs to Padmavati machi. Wind on the top cooled us down.

First to do was to chill in the cold water on the top. Swimming in natural pools is my favorite hobby. It re-energised me to cover up Suvela Machi and Balekilla. There is temple and tomb of Saibai on Padmvati machi. Ample space for residence is available.

Finest swimming pool on earth !! On 4,200 ft !!

When we were moving towards Suvela machi clouds started poring water. Which made road bit slippery. But rain changed our mood completely.

Clouds moved away and we were able to grab complete view of Suvela machi. Bhatghar dam can also be seen from here.

We were transfixed by the scenery around it.

We slowly climbed to nedhe (natural hole inside mountain). It provides finest scenery around. In clear weather you can see Sinhgad, Purandar fort, Rayreshwar pathar, Bhatgahr dam easily. We were able to spot them too.

Monsoon clouds kept making sure that our eyes were busy watching nature play.

Views of Rajgad from end of Suvela machi are marvelous. Covering every single Machi on these forts is very important or else you will miss true beauty of fort.

After Sevela Machi we climbed Balekilla in half an hour. There was cluud cover on whole fort so we were not able to gaze beauty from the top. Fortunately clouds disappeared in few minutes and we got never seen before views of all the surrounding.

Tired and Outwore we took an hours rest from 5pm to 6pm. Our dinner arrived by 6pm.We pounced on the food asap. We gazed around and enjoyed echos till 8.30pm and then went to bed.

Next day without wasting time we moved towards Sanjivani machi. You can see complete route to Rajgad. This is complete small hill range called connecting these two forts. You can see Torna at the end.

This is where Pali road turns up. This is just 25 percent of route as we descend down from Rajgad. I and Aditya parted our ways. I continued to march down to Torna while he continued along the road.

On the way to Torna there are few homes of localites. You can have stay and food over there.

Path was difficult at some places and impossible at few. But difficult was easy for me and impossible took little time.

I could stare the my itinerary all the way from Rajgad.

Finally at the base of Budhala machi. I was ready to give 100% but nature took 150% out of me. Only with help of my never give up attitude I was climed to top.

Even doggy was not able to believe what we achieved.

After strenous trek and difficult climbs it was time for most dangerous but beautiful walk of my life. All my trekking experience helped passing through it.

I passed Konkan darwaja reviewing awesome beauty behind.

There is small shed where you can get lime juice. Water tank with drinkable water is also there.

By now I was almost half dead due to 5 hours tough trek. Climate was hot and I was in desparate need of water. But when I saw Zunjarmachi which is recognised as most difficult to conquere I forgot baout everything else.

There were few youngsters who were willing to go to Machi but waiting for someone who can guide them. I told them its easy and I have done it many times. I just boosted there confidense.

We all moved towards Zunjarmachi. There are few rock patches which are risky. As few thousand feet valley is on other side. With extra precaution we covered it easily.

Views of Torna fort from Zhunjarmachi were awesome and I was proud to complete it sucessfully. Those youngsters were high in confidense now and on way back they led the route.

I will always remember the moment and that group who accompanied me.

I relaxed a bit .. enjoying and reviewing fantastic job done. Its pretty difficult to cover both forts in 36 hours covering all points ;). I celebrated with 3 glasses of lime juice.

On the descend of Torna towards Velhe village we can see amazing views. It was rained heavily just after I completed Zunjarmachi. So waether was pleasent but route became more difficult.

As I came close to Velhe it rained heavily. I literally carried 4-5 liters of water on my body for almost 1 km. With wet mind I arrrived at Torna vihar and ended my one of the best journey with tea and misal.

Daulatabad fort -- Defence at its Best

I, Shridhar Purandare ,am back with one more trekking and admiring destination for travelers and that place is Daulatabad fort in Aurangabad. This was special as my parents joined me.

Daulatabad (Marathi दौलताबाद; Persian دولت‌آباد meaning “City of Prosperity”), is a 14th century fort city in Maharashtra, India, about 16 kilometers northwest of Aurangabad. The place, was once as known as Deogiri, (circa the sixth century AD, when it was an important uplands city along caravan routes and is now but a village, based around the former city of the same name.

Starting 1327, it famously remained the capital of Tughlaq dynasty, under Muhammad bin Tughluq (r. 1325-1351), who also changed its name, and forcibly moved the entire population of Delhi here, for two years, before it was abandoned due to lack of water. (Source: Wikipedia)

Fort is easily reachable with public or private transport. Do take a guide book which will help
you explore through it. Fun is more in understanding why they built it like that rather that how they built it.

Three layer fortifications make it tough to access.

Humans have constructed defensive works for many thousands of years, in a variety of increasingly complex designs. But I haven't see such a fine defense mechanism ever before. Most of the sculptures are still in good condition. Its finest defense system is accompanied by exquisite carvings and metallic cannons. Different types and levels of barriers, tunnels ,traps,narrow access bridges,draw bridges and heavy cannons made it invincible.

Here is some history about the fort.

The fort's sculptures are being preserved and exhibited for visitors.

An invincible fort, one of the best preserved in comparison to other forts in the vicinity of the same period. Its sound and sturdy quality exists due to the powerful wall about three miles in perimeter and defended by a moat and gacis that runs round the hill at its foot and between this outer curtain and the citadel, also known as Dharagir and Duwagir. These details have been extracted from Professor Dulari Qureshi's book Fort of Daulatabad.
The Chand Minar is a tower 210 ft (64 m). high and 70 ft (21 m). in circumference at the base, and was originally covered with beautiful Persian glazed tiles. It was erected in 1445 by Ala-ud-din Bahmani to commemorate his capture of the fort. The Chini Mahal, or China Palace, is the ruin of a building once of great beauty. In it Abul Hasan Tana Shah, the last of the Qutb Shahi kings of Golconda, was imprisoned by Aurangzeb in 1687.

All the cannons are massive and neatly built. Some of them are made from metal and are still intact.

Old temple is marvelous with more than 100 polls standing tall.

This trap is built with perfection. Impossible to climb from both sides. Filled with dangerous reptiles at times.
Finally it was moment to conquer the peak of Deogiri fort.

Madheghat to Shivtharghal -- Waterfall Dhamaka

I, Shridhar Purandare ,am back with one more trekking treat for travelers and that is Madheghat -Shivtherghal trek. This trek was special as it was first monsoon trek of Inventure.

Some history about Madheghat.
The Battle of Sinhagad was a night battle that took place on February 4, 1670 in the fort of Sinhagad, near the city of Pune, Maharashtra, India. It was fought between Tanaji Malusare, a commander of Maratha king Shivaji and Udaybhan Rathod, fort keeper under Jai Singh I and Ibrahim Adil Shah I. Tanaji's army won the war to hand over control of the fort to the Marathas with causalities 300 from Mogul Side and 50 from Marathas and around 4000 Mogul troops imprisoned by mere 500 Maratahs. Once inside, they set upon Udaybhan and his men. A fierce combat took place between Tanaji and Udaybhan. Udaybhan managed to rid Tanaji of his shield, still Tanhaji fought Udaybhan by tying a cloth over one of his hands and using it to ward off Udaybhan's sword attacks. then udaybhan attacked Tanaji on his right shoulder with his sword and tore him till his belly then tanaji felt on ground and then suddenly 60yrs old Shelar mama came and attacked on Udaybhan with his sword and killed him.Then his brother Suryaji along with Shelar Mama marshaled the forces to recapture the fort. Shivaji renamed the fort from Kondana to Sinhagad in Tanaji's honor.When Shivaji learned of his friend's death, he remarked "Gad ala pan Sinha gela", meaning "We have gained the fort, but lost a lion." After that Tanaji's body(Madhe in Marathi) was taken to his origin village Umbrat through this ghat. This is how this ghat got its name.

We started our amazing journey from ST to Velhe then with Mahindra Pickup to Kelad and then long trek to Shivtharghal.

Pickup journey was amazing to Madheghat.Few enjoyed more then us by sitting on top.
Rain and fog made it memorable.

Observing landscapes along the way we moved further towards Kelad.

As we started the trek from Madheghat , vivid green beauty around the path got captured in our minds.

Nature always manufactures unbelievable plant structures from roots to leaves.

Noticing unnoticed was true fun !!

Trail to Shivtharghal was mixture of lush greenery, water streams, finest landscapes, huge waterfalls and unmatched wild beauty.

Shivtharghal is an outstanding place. If you are looking for place where you can get peace of mind that too in nature trails then this the place you must visit.

Whenever you are trekking through jungle take extra precaution when you take support of some branches ... You may never know nature's design !!!!!!!

Getting back was more difficult because of rush for public transport due to Ganesh Visarjan.
I tried to stop ST forcibly standing in middle of the road ... but ST driver was smarter than me and accelerated more .. finally I had to pull back :(

We did this trek twice in 2008. Its very awesome trek for beginners.

Now time for some history about the fort :

This fort was incorporated into his kingdom by Shivaji along with the forts of Lohagad, Visapur, Tung and Tikona in 1657. On March 11, 1818, Col. Prother tried to take over this fort but even after a prolonged siege could not make any headway. Finally on 14 March, by igniting the stored ammunition by means of a loose cannon ball he succeeded and this fort went to the British.

I and Dhawal sneaked through Pune to reach Peth- Shivapur via Lonavala which is the base village . Fort has stairs all the way to the top. In Monsoon water flows over the steps and walk becomes amazing.

Caves are there in the middle which can accommodate 10-15 people.

Caves are accompanied by temple.

When you will reach the top you will get mesmerized by the beauteous surroundings.
There are two small ponds. You can enjoy swimming here with caution.
Do not go to end of the pond.

Natural swimming pools covered by lush green border completely refresh your mind.

There are few canons around the fort. Forts area is pretty small so you can roam around in an hour.

Best benefit is that you can see all Ambe valley City from the top. If you have a binocular then its a treat !!!!!! You may spot some celebrities roaming around.

Views are so awesome and wondrous that you forget the time!!!!
Make sure you do not go to edges of the fort. Which are not that strong.

Chilling in the pool, Roaming in the fog, Admiring Sahara Ambe valley City and getting soaked in the rain is the routine you should follow on this fort.

Your return journey to Pune will be a heaven ride as it will pass thorough some of the finest points in Lonavala.

Tailbaila Climbing - My First Climb

I, Shridhar Purandare ,am back with one more trekking and rock climbing destination for travelers and that place is Telbaila.

This will be my first photo blog. We did this trek in Nov 2008. First of all I will provide you with some preface of Telbaila ...

Telbaila is basically a watch tower built to guard over the Sahwashni ghat near Pali. Very good rock patch for amateur climbers.

We left early morning for TelBaila with our bikes. Not knowing the road condition ahead we were enjoying the Ambe Valley Road.

Few such boards converted our grinning faces into full scale laughing riots.

We started our journey to the base. We just hovered discovering the route. Then decided to lay out our own route. So we fixed straight line between us and the base and followed that line.

Laughing, teasing, casting insults, clicking the moments and admiring landscapes we moved on.

As it was my first rock climbing trek I was pretty much excited. I was leading our way to base.
No matter what blocked our way we climbed up through it.

After canvassing the climbing route of left inner wall , I decided to lead the climb.

Climb was medium on the scale of toughness. With help of my height it was easy for me.

As everybody else I also was feared of falling. But with adequate safety we made sure that the fall will be safe. I climbed up further and we gained most important part of climbing confidence.

It was huge achievement for me !!! Adrenaline rushing through my body it was great fun ... My friends were continuously cheering me from bottom and all important supporting me with the rope.

Now it was time for second guy Dhawal to climb up... He is very strong in climbing and climbed up easily while I was evaluating my climb.

Next mission was to descend down. I was very comfortable with rappelling so it was piece of cake for me.

After everybody came down safely it was time to celebrate. "Hip Hip Hurrayyyyyyyyyy" ...
" Woooooooooooooooooo" Jubilance could have been easily seen on our faces.

We spent some time clicking ravishing looks of Sahyadri range. You glare at Konkan region from the top.

Now it was time to move back to Pune. Accomplishments were endless, freshness that this trek provided us was eternal and memories were gratifying.

When we looked back it was feeling that I can not describe in words ..You only can understand it when you do it... ;)

Ratangad - Mystic Peak of Sahyadri

Few interesting things people do not know about this area:

Ratangad was captured by Chhatrapati Shivaji Raje Bhosle and was one of his favorites. The base village Ratanwadi has a beautiful Amruteshwar temple which is famous for its carvings.It is around 1000 years old dating back to the Hemadpant Era Roughly from the 8th Century. The fort is origin for the river Pravara / Amrutvahini . The Bhandardara and Nilonda dams are built on this river.

Indian mythology has said that, once Agastya Rishi meditated by consuming only water and air for a long tenure. Due to his incredible devotion, Lord Shiva appeared, blessed him, and left a stream of Ganga that is now known as Pravara River. Locals say that treasure looted from Surat is kept on this fort.

Our experience:

This was not my first time to trek in Bhadardara region. I have done Alang,Madanm,Kulang and Harishchandra gadh before. With the experience I knew it would be no more than paradise.

Team members: Dhawal(aka Bona), Aditya(Abu),Rahul(Lancer),Prashant(ex Builder) and I(Lambda).

All of us are profound trekkers so we were not worried about Monsoon clouds. We decided to climb up from Samrud route and descend by Ratanwadi route.

1st august 09 :

After few treks you will take not more than few minutes to pack you sack. Make sure that you take as less luggage as you can and en wrap all things with polythene.

We left Pune by 10.30 pm. Nashik highway is pretty well maintained. With few stops we reached Sangamner by 1.30am. Mosquitoes kept us awake till 6am.

2nd August:

Staying at Bus stand, Using leaves of trees as Toilet paper,Drinking water from any source you may find,not caring about how people look at you when you wear shorts and carry big sack, maintaining uncomfortable position on bike or in ST bus for hours, sleeping in most uncomfortable place as if you are sleeping on your bed, traveling when rest of the world is sleeping are few habits of Trekkers wait wait... and even after all this enjoy the beauty of nature to the fullest makes trekkers special.I am proud to be a trekker.

With the route described above we drove to Samrud village. Yashwant rao , local villager help us to park our bikes safely and prepared lunch for us. Rice chapati ( Tandalachi Bhakari), Cabbage and Thecha(recipe made from chilly) made the menu.

It was an awesome experience. By 11pm we left for Ratangadh. We took off some time to see famous Sandhan valley. We bathed in the icy water. Yahswant rao was leading us as the path is very misleading sometimes.

After chilling for half an hour we moved ahead. Yashwant rao showed us various Ayurvedic plants like Hirda( for Cough). Surroundings are grand. You can spot Ajoba, Alang,Madan,Kulang and Kalsubai on the way. Waterfalls welcome you after every few minutes. But most of these waterfalls are subject to good rain.

Cliffs similar to konkan kada also can be seen. This route takes some skills. We also spotted smallest poisonous snake in the world – Saw Scaled Viper . Nature always will test your mettle.
But it gives miraculous beauty in return. Fresh air,foggy atmosphere,clean water,peace and joy every bit of these is priceless. Prashant was inches away from this snake.If you behave well with it then everything is fine.

As we moved further to top of Ratangadh wind speed increased drastically. We crossed tryambak darwaja by 4pm.

Some steps before that makes the trek interesting. These broad and tall steps and take every chunk of your stamina. We went to top to see the Nedhe (Natural hole in the hill). On the way to it wind started flowing at 60-80kmph. I literally had to bend toward wall while walking. At one small patch it was partially successful to blow me off the track. Luckily my grip and Dhawal saved me.

The Nedhe is beautiful and wind flows through it. On a clear day views from top are marvelous.
We were somewhat tired now and headed to cave.

On the way we saw Kunda (Water tank) which is source of Pravara river.

When we reached cave the seen was not that good. Small cave was occupied completely and big cave was covered half by one group. So we occupied place in front of cave door. After unloading sacks and other stuff we were ready to go for crab hunting.
Yashwant rao took us to different areas of fort for hunting. We roamed around covering Kalyan Darwaja and few more water cisterns. We also saw water tank where treasure is hidden (according to Yashwantrao).

After one hour we were able to catch 4 crabs. Two of them were big and and two small.

With successful hunting we came back to cave for cooking. Dhawal and prashant were looking dull and uneasy. They slept till 8pm. We started preparing for dinner. Crab Curry,Maggy Rice,Bread Jam and other snacks made the menu. Vegitarian ate rice while we wiped out Crab Curry and rice. Visibility was decreased to few feet level by that time. Cool breeze was making us shiver time and again.I went to bed by 9pm.

3rd August: We woke up by 7am and hurriedly started return journey. 7 hours tiresome bike ride to Pune was still remaining. With some ladder fun initially rest route was piece of cake for us.

Within 90 minutes were cruising and were just 10 minutes away from Ratanwadi. I decided to cool down in the spring while others were taking snaps.

Ratanwadi has one of the most exquisite surroundings in Monsoon. I was endlessly clicking pics for 15 minutes. Epitome of sculptures, Amruteshwar temple which is about 1000 years old still facinates the tourists.
It is surrounded by rice farms and springs. Indrayani is the rice brand grown out of this area.Jeep was waiting for us to take us to Samrud. With heavy lunch we left for Pune by 1pm. With the prestine environment around driving was a pleasure.

One thing to mention here : As the forts are becoming more and more accessible to people who are not matured enough to go there, plastic pollution is on the rise on moost of the forts. Same is the case with Ratangadh. Public need to be tought about trekking manners which are very simple.

Few Lines about Trekker's manners:

1. Do not throw plastic/undegradable waste anywhere on the planet
2. Plastic includes Beer bottles/Water bottles and polythene too.
3. Do not use your carving skills on the walls/doors/caves of the forts.
4. Make sure to not bring people who do not follow above manners to forts.

We reached Pune by 9pm and readily dispersed to sleep tight.

A-Z for travellers : Make your trip memorable

Hi,

I, Shridhar Purandare ,am back with few guidelines/safeties/precautions/do's-dont's for travelers. That includes all types of traveling like trekking,touring,hiking and many more types of travel.

Here I will include different categories and then do s and don't s of respective categories.

Every person has different goal while going for outing.Some of them can be:

1. Joy/Happiness/Pleasure/Freshness/Passion
2. Adrenalin rush/Adventure sport
3. Go some other place to waste or spend time
4. Explore new places
5. For some it is like work
6. Social Engineering (making contacts)

Comment me out with some new reasons you know.... :)

Whenever you travel you have to go through following steps:

1. Deciding on location
2. Deciding on time/day/days to travel
3. Get those leaves sanctioned by your boss ( for servicemen ;) I know its very difficult)
4. If approved then plan the travel path/route/destination else start from above steps again :(
a. Study/See(pictures on net)/read(blogs,books,maps) of the location you are going to visit ( Optional but recommended)
b. Booking of Car/plane/railway/hotels/e.t.c
c. Packing of luggage
d. Informing family about what your plan is ( optional)
5. Traveling
6. Sharing

Now I will point out Safeties/precautions/do's-dont's for all of above categories.

1. Deciding on location:

a. Go on Internet travel websites/blogs like

b. Ask friends/tour operators/relatives

Do not hesitate to do it. Ask them for photos/memories/hotels and many more things.

Just make sure that its right season to visit that place.

You will make sure that its in your budget ;)

2. Deciding on time/day/days to travel

It depends on the place you visit. Facilities available at the place for residence, beauty of the place, nature of the place and your time constraints too.

Travel can extend from few hours to many days. For servicemen leave approval is main issue.

One more thing :

Only day of travel does not matter. What places you cover in those days matters.

So most important tip for travellers : Study the place well before visit

3. Get those leaves sanctioned by your boss

(Imp:All the things mentioned here are not from my mind/brain. My friends has contribution to this point. I have no responsibility of any cases,events and actions that may occur when these steps are followed)

1. If your trip is long like 10-15 days and you doubt that your boss will allow then get sick for those many days. Find doctor who can give you such certificate. And just vanish !!!!!

2. If boss is cool and allows easily then there is no problem.

3. If your family do not allow you to go on some dangerous trek or expedition then lie hard or tell them once you complete that travel.

4. If your unwanted friend want to join you !@@### then create some prerequisites so that he will get himself out of your plan/ tell him other persons do not want him/ its too much for him to handle/ e.t.c.

5. If he gets through above situations then make him wanted friend !!!!!

6. Applying leaves month before travel increases probability of allowing them.

7. If nothing works count 1-10 in your mind and calm down. :P

4. plan the travel path/route/destination

Big tours/treks/expeditions only become pleasurable if you plan well and well before.
Either you can do it by yourself or ask tour operators to do on your behalf. Off course they will charge for that.

Do plan for following things:

1. Luggage you want to carry (Minimum the luggage maximum the comfort)
2. Hotel/Flight/Railway/Private bookings.
3. Detailed study of place if it is remote/abroad else plan the route of your travel.
4. Make sure you know everything that you need to know much before you visit the place.
5. Search engines give almost all the information you need.
6. Its always better to inform your loved people about your plan.
7. Flight/hotel rates can be much cheaper if you book at least a month in advance.
8. Do maintain good contacts with tour operators,hotel owners and friends who travel a lot... They can save your time and money in planning.

5. Traveling

1. If you have followed all previous steps seriously then you will have minimal difficulties while travelling.
2. Do respect local people and they will treat you well.
3. Try local food .. You will always find some very good dishes.
4. Dress comfortable and feel comfortable while travelling.
5. Do not break any law especially on foreign soil.
6. Do take lots of pictures and few souvenirs as memory of your trip.
7. Don't waste your time in shopping until and unless the product is really not gettable or place is Dubai/Singapore.
8. Always start early in the morning if possible. That will leave ample time for other activities.
9. Eat light whenever you travel.
10. Drink boiled/mineral water where ever possible.
