Donating to Fight Hunger in the Community

Treleaven by King Ferry Winery donated a portion of its tasting room sales to the King Ferry Food Pantry of Good Shepard Catholic Community in an effort to help fight hunger in the local area.

The King Ferry Food Pantry received a $3,688 donation at a check presentation at the food pantry yesterday morning during a food delivery from the Food Bank of CNY.

“It’s been a long-standing Treleaven tradition to give to those in need throughout the year. The King Ferry Food Pantry has given the local community amazing support and we are delighted to return this support in a meaningful way by helping their efforts,” said Director of Operations, Lev Saltonstall.

The winery generated the donation directly from tasting fees from January 2015 to October 2015, with $1 from each $4 fee going to the charity. Winery Co-owner Peter Saltonstall has been impressed with his customer’s enthusiasm for the program - “The response by the public is phenomenal. It is important to remember that there are many people in great need of the basics that many of us take for granted. We have found our partnership with the local food pantry to be incredibly rewarding, and we hope to continue this program.”

The winery’s efforts will continue in the final months of 2015, and carry on into the following year.

The King Ferry Food Pantry serves anyone in need, and is designated by the Food Bank of CNY to serve those living in the Southern Cayuga School District. In addition to food, the pantry has free books, children’s literacy programs, children’s holiday events, used clothing/toys, food tastings and periodic blood pressure screenings.

To volunteer or donate to the pantry, contact Debbie Patrick at 315.497.2049 or Debbie@electricalinvestigation.com.

A tagline is a series of words that help capture the essence of an organization. Great taglines are short and memorable. For instance, Treleaven’s current tagline is ‘Local, Sustainable, World Class. Other examples:

Please note: if you submit the same idea as someone else, we will only count the earliest entry.

→ All tagline entries must be original.

→ All tagline entries must be no longer than eight words.

→ Entries must be received by 11:59pm EST on August 31, 2015.

→ Entrants must be 21 years of age or older.

→ By submitting a tagline, entrants grant Treleaven copyright ownership and waive any claim to financial or other forms of compensation now or in the future. Treleaven also reserves the right to use both winning and non-winning taglines for the purpose of Treleaven marketing.

→ Treleaven reserves the right to not adopt any of the entries as our tagline.

Treleaven is now offering local craft beer in addition to its award-winning wines at the winery.

“It’s very important to us to support local businesses in this region, and what a better and fun way to do that than by helping promote a local brewery?” Treleaven Marketing Manager, Michelle Kokot said about the menu change. “We are always telling our customers that we have something for everyone when it comes to our wines, so we thought we should expand that to craft beer."

Treleaven will have four rotating tap handles, with the first batch including Cortland’s Naked Lap, Firehouse Pale Ale, Industrial IPA and Heffer Weizen. A flight of beer will cost $4, while a 16oz. pint will go for $5. Treleaven will also have their very own 64oz. growlers available that you can have filled fresh off the tap with any of the four beers to take home.

"Hopefully our customers will enjoy trying the selection from Cortland Beer Company, along with our wines," added Kokot.

For the Love of Wine

All for the love of wine, right?

Meet Robinson Littrell, a junior at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn. A young man with a bright future, studying Corporate Strategy & Entrepreneurial Development, a major he designed to pursue his passions of entrepreneurship & business development.

This bright, young man also happened to have an appreciation for wine.

On a day like any other this past February, Robinson and a few of his fellow classmates boarded a plane at Nashville International Airport. They were headed to New York City for an AlphaSights business case competition as finalists to present a report to top-level AlphaSights management. Little did Robinson know, the next few days would take him on a grand adventure, or misadventure depending on how you’re looking at it.

Being it was only his second time in the Northeast, Robinson was eager to take in the Big Apple sights after the competition wrapped up - he explored Times Square, Vanderbilt Hall and Top of the Rock Observation Deck at Rockefeller Center, and even fit in a quick stop at the M&M store.

On his final day, with some time to spare before his flight, Robinson decided to take a walk through the Union Square Greenmarket - a walk that would have him cross paths with Treleaven.

“I had read a lot about the growing prestige of the New York wine industry and I had heard of Treleaven wines and their reputation, so I was delighted to finally find an authentic Finger Lakes wine,” he recalled.

His stop at our tent led to a tasting of several different Treleaven wines, including the 2012 Meritage, which recently won Gold and Best of Class during the 2015 International Eastern Wine Competition.

“It was one of the best wines I had ever tasted in my short two months of being 21 years old.”

And he did what any wine lover would do in this situation; purchase a bottle, which also happened to be the last one available on the square.

“I have a passion for wine, and am hoping to even make a career out of it,” Robinson said. “I am always reading, tasting, testing, researching and after reading a few issues of Wine Spectator, words couldn't do justice to the joy I felt upon securing an authentic bottle.”

So Robinson headed back to his hotel, wrapped the newly acquired bottle of Meritage delicately with clothing, tucked it into his suitcase and strapped it in for the upcoming travels.

This is where things began to take a turn for the worse.

As many recall, this particular February clocked in as the coldest recorded February in NYC since 1934 - miserable, punishing, bone-numbing cold that just didn’t want to let up. On top of that, mother nature reared her snowy head, dropping record-breaking amounts of snow which happened to be falling the day Robinson headed back home to Tennessee. This usually leads to one thing -- flight cancellations.

“There were a couple flights I could catch,” Robinson explained, “But they required me to dump my wine.”

And to any wine connoisseur, this is an unspeakable crime, so Robinson again did what any wine lover would do in this situation - spend the next three hours attempting to find a route back to Nashville that could accommodate a checked bag. After passing up three well-qualified flights because bag check-ins required certain notice before flight time, the plan slowly began to form.

“I would get a bus from La Guardia to JFK International where I would fly six hours to Los Angeles,” Robinson explained. “There I would check my bag again for a flight to Dallas, where I would catch a connecting flight to Nashville.”

All for the love of wine.

What seemed like a foolproof plan though, turned into a 36-hour ordeal full of stolen items, icy runways, lost IDs, damaged tickets, mechanical failures and overbooked flights. Despite the atrocious travel that had Robinson land in Nashville at 6:00AM - just in time for his 9:00AM class - he was surprisingly unruffled because there was a 2012 Meritage waiting to be stored in his wine cooler, and someday, enjoyed. The final piece of the puzzle was waiting for him in the baggage claim, but he instantly knew the reason for the detour had not survived the journey when the bold, black cherry scent of red wine permeated through the suitcase.

“I discovered the Meritage had been broken between Los Angeles and Nashville, soiling my suit, dress shirts, dress shoes, socks and gifts I had bought for my family and friends back home.”

The endeavor was suddenly the costliest and most worthless weekend in recent memory for Robinson. What upset him most though was not the flights, or the airline’s cold treatment of him, or even the soiling of his clothing. What upset him was that what was supposed to make the whole trip meaningful, the 2012 Meritage, now stained his suits and NYC memorabilia.

“For the love of Vino, right?” said Robinson.

Fortunately, defeat was not in this man's vocabulary and he once again did what anybody with an appreciate for wine would do - attempt to recover what had been lost which is how his unfortunate story landed on the desk of Treleaven.

“Everyone read the email Robinson had sent us explaining the situation. Though we felt terrible for what he went through, we couldn’t help, but also feel a bit impressed and flattered that he went through such great lengths to preserve a bottle of our wine,” Director of Operations, Lev Saltonstall said. “We had to thank him.”

So Treleaven did what any wine lover would do for a fellow wine lover - packaged a bottle of our gold-medal winning Meritage with one of our Mummy Bags, used to preserve wine while traveling so the incident was one Robinson would never have to relive. The package was addressed, sealed, and sent on its way to Nashville, Tenn., and several days later we were happy to see our new friend Robinson Littrell receive a fully intact bottle to uncork and enjoy.

All for the love of wine, right?
