Recently my two favorite Linux distros had major releases. Linux Mint released Linux Mint 13 and Zorin OS released a release candidate of Zorin OS Core 6. Both are based on Ubuntu 12.04. Again I refuse to use the stupid animal names that Ubuntu gives their releases.

If you were one of the people, like me, who gave up on Linux Mint 12 because of the controversial Gnome 3 desktop have no fear. Linux Mint 13 comes with the MATE desktop by default. For those of you who may not know MATE is a fork of Gnome 2. I wasn’t a big fan of MATE when it first came out but it has matured since the release of Mint 12 and now, in my opinion, it is a fully functioning desktop. Not only that but I think it also restores Mint to its former glory. Mint 13 also has a Cinnamon desktop version of 13 but Cinnamon is just Gnome 3 lite. Linux Mint 13 get’s the Trench Reynolds seal of approval. *bark bark*

Now to me Zorin OS 5 Core is the pinnacle of not only Linux distros but OSes in general. So I was more than a little hesitant when Zorin said this in the release statement of OS 6 Core RC…

Zorin Desktop embraces all of the latest and greatest of Open Source software and technologies such as Gtk3 and other software from the GNOME 3 software stack.

After installing OS 6 Core RC I was a little disappointed. This wasn’t the perfect distro I had come to know and love. Instead of the awesome desktop panel that Zorin used in 5 they had a dock instead. While customizable it wasn’t customizable to the degree I wish it would be. That’s not to say it’s a bad distro. Zorin’s main goal is to convert Windows 7 users by giving them a Windows 7 experience in Linux. I actually think with this new dock it succeeds more in that vein than it did in OS 5. However the dock and the Gnome 3 back-end just weren’t for me.

Zorin OS Core 5 still reigns supreme in my heart and on my main computer.

Feds bust major backpage human trafficking ring

Feds: Sex trafficking ring used Backpage.com ads:

Recently the feds handed down a 50 page indictment against one 27-year-old Johnelle L. Bell of New Jersey for allegedly running a nationwide prostitution and human trafficking ring on the Village Voice Media owned backpage.com.

The ring was based out of Little Rock, Arkansas but trafficked women and girls as young as 17 in at least a dozen states from November of 2009 to June of 2011.

Bell is said to have used the typical cowardly pimp tactics. The girls thought they were in a relationship with Bell before he turned them out on Backpage. He violently assaulted the girls including chokings, beatings and whippings with a belt. There was also the threats of violence against their families. He even had one girl tattooed with his street name of ‘Victorious P’.

Also charged in this ring was 21-year-old Brittany Lawson. While Bell and Lawson were advertising the girls on Backpage Lawson was checking out other women on Backpage that they thought they could ‘recruit’. So in essence Backpage is the new slave trade market.

Of course in such a headline grabbing bust Backpage’s head legal weasel Liz McDougall had something to say of little to no value…

Liz McDougall, general counsel at Village Voice Media, said she was still reading through the indictment Thursday. Generally, she said, “When the feds are able to indict a pimp or a trafficker, I think that is a really good thing.”

No shit? How about commenting on how Backpage facilitated in the trafficking and beatings of these girls? How about commenting on where the money goes from the ads that Bell took out goes? Anything? No. Instead you blather about how it’s a good thing that a pimp was indicted like a mindless drone who had been fed her lines. Tell me Ms. McDougall, is someone at Village Voice Media beating you and threatening your family? If not you’re sure acting like it.

Six Degrees of Dio: Flotsam and Jetsam

I remember when I bought my first Flotsam and Jetsam album. At the time I was a huge fan of Metallica. This was before they became insufferable douchenozzles. Jason Newsted was playing bass for Metallica at the time and prior to that I knew he was in a band called Flotsam and Jetsam.

I was on a lunch break from work and went into my local Jamesway department store looking for some new music to listen to. I saw a cassette tape of the Flotsam and Jetsam album Cuatro. I bought it and listened to it all the way through. Then listened to it again and again and again. Cuatro became one of those albums that I not only bought in multiple formats but it became one of those albums that I played so much I got sick of listening to it. That’s a compliment by the way. After listening to Cuatro I thought to myself if Queensryche and Metallica had a baby it would be Flotsam and Jetsam. Again this is a compliment as they were two of my favorite bands at the time. An even bigger compliment because while Queensryche and most certainly Metallica have lost a lot of luster since their heydays Flotsam and Jetsam has continued to improve their thrash metal craft. Without hyperbole I say they are the best and most underrated thrash band of all time.

As I mentioned before Jason Newsted played for Flotsam and Jetsam and also played in Ozzy Osbourne’s band which also once again takes to Black Sabbath and then to Dio.

I’m still a fan of Newsted. I think he’s an awesome bass player however I thought Flotsam and Jetsam was better without him.

But we’re not done yet. I have a challenge for you dear readers. I found a band that I couldn’t connect to Dio. Actually I just got bored doing the research. So I put it to you dear reader. Can you connect Ronnie James Dio to Faith No More? Don’t disappoint me folks.

Chardon gunman to be tried as an adult

T.J. Lane to be tried as adult in Chardon High School shootings:

This past Thursday Chardon High School gunman T.J. Lane was ordered to be tried as an adult for the school shooting murders of Demetrius Hewlin, Russell King Jr., and Daniel Parmertor. This means that if convicted the 17-year-old is looking at life behind bars without the possibility of parole. That was pretty much to be expected and I’m pleased as one could be in a situation like this that it happened. However I want to discuss a few other things that happened during the proceedings.

The first is the testimony of arresting officer Deputy Jon Bilicic.

Bilicic testified that he found Lane wearing a shirt with the word “Killer” on it. A gun and a knife were found nearby. He read Lane his rights and began speaking with him as he drove to the sheriff’s office.

The officer asked whether anyone had upset him or picked on him. Lane said neither of those was the case, either.

So when someone from the Kid Criminal Crowd tries to say that he shouldn’t be tried as an adult

And what would one of these hearings be without a criminal defense attorney making laughable claims…

DeVan argued that Lane should be released on a $500,000 bond, secured through the property of his family. He said Lane could begin to receive the treatment he needs and remain on house arrest and electronic monitoring.

Really? ‘Treatment’ and house arrest for a triple murderer? Does the defense want the court to fluff his pillows and bring him some lemonade too? The only treatment this loser needs is a bullet behind the ear. Since that’s not possible he can serve house arrest for the rest of his life in his new house of a 6′x 6′ prison cell.

Comic of the Week: Justice League Dark #9

I didn’t like this title before because the name sucks, they have no affiliation with the Justice League, and some of the characters were crap. However it has vastly improved since the last story arc and it has the reboot debut of one of my favorite underused characters in Black Orchid. I was a huge fan of the Neil Gaiman graphic series.

The Steve Trevor connection works for me too as it gives the team a purpose rather than a bunch of whiny victims.

Police: Lafayette Student Contacted Teens Online:

20-year-old Alexander Theodore Clow of Bethlehem, Pennsylvania has been charged with having an inappropriate online relationship with a 14-year-old Oklahoma boy and that’s putting it mildly.

In 2011 Clow met the boy on the original anonymous random webcam chat site ChatRoulette. Here’s how the initial meeting went…

Clow told the boy that he is a psychology major and philosophy minor at Lafayette College. After an hour, Clow asked the boy if he could masturbate into the camera, according to the arrest warrant. After Clow masturbated, the conversation continued for several more hours.

The ‘relationship’ continued for several months and across several different platforms. Police were notified by the NCMEC after the boy’s parents found explicit messages on the boy’s iPod touch.

But it doesn’t end there. Clow allegedly admitted to having a ‘relationship’ with a 16-year-old boy and ‘had sex’ with the boy in the boy’s home. 16 may be the age of consent in Pennsylvania but it doesn’t make it any less disgusting. Let’s call a spade a spade and say that Clow probably groomed the 16-year-old so consent is a debatable term here.

Getting back to ChatRoulette, how many more times do I have to say this? Parents, no 14-year-old needs a webcam. No 14-year-old boy needs to be unsupervised on the internet alone. You lock your doors at night yet you leave this window the world has in to your child’s room wide open.

‘Sex-Pig’ charged with craigslist rape of teen

Self-proclaimed ‘sex pig’ held on rape charges:

44-year-old Lee Lubonne of Litchfield Park, Arizona considers himself a ‘sex pig’ and wishes he could find Jesus. He must not have been looking for him too hard because he’s been charged with two rapes, one of his victims was a 15-year-old girl he allegedly victimized on craigslist.

The story starts out rather bizarrely. Police say that Lubbone met a female photographer through her website and posed as he was offering her a job. Instead he got her back to his house and raped her.

Lubonne allegedly ordered her to go to a closet and retrieve a bag containing chains, locks, latex gloves, ropes, zip ties, duct tape, sex toys and medical supplies, according to police documents. Frightened, the victim went along with his requests so he wouldn’t hurt her, court paperwork said.

The only thing that probably saved her life was the fact that she was wearing an ankle monitor and she used that to get him to release her. That did not stop her from going to police and giving them his address.

As it turns out police were looking for him in another rape. They say he raped a 15-year-old girl who had advertised her services as a babysitter on craigslist.

Among some of the items police found in his home were personal items that may have belonged to other victims.

Sex crimes detectives said they are concerned that there may be many more victims who have not come forward. People are urged to call MCSO at 602-876-1011 if they feel they have been victimized in this case.

Craigslist: the Sears catalog for rapists. It is far from cleaned up and posting just about any ad on it could turn you into a victim. That’s no hyperbole.

And parents, no child has any business posting any ad on craigslist for anything.

Six Degrees of Dio: Flogging Molly

Flogging Molly is a Celtic punk band that my son (aka Teh Boy) introduced me to a few years ago. Being raised in an Irish upbringing myself I have somewhat of an affinity for Irish music. Flogging Molly combines the two genres very fluidly in my opinion. Now I don’t enjoy a majority of their songs but the ones I do like I really enjoy.

But yes, even these seminal punks have a connection to Dio.

Although he doesn’t like to talk about it from what I understand, Flogging Molly founder and frontman Dave King was the lead sing of the band Fastway. King was in Fastway with Pete Way. Way once played for Ozzy Osbourne’s band. And from here we take our usual route from Ozzy to Sabbath to Dio.

Omegle child predator posed as Justin Bieber to extort girls

Christopher P. Gunn Charged With Sextortation And Cyberstalking After Allegedly Posing As Justin Bieber Online:

Authorities: Man lured girls by posing as Justin Bieber:

In Florida 31-year-old Christopher P. Gunn has been charged with posing as teen pop sensation Justin Bieber on the anonymous chat site Omegle in order to extort explicit photos from underage girls.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office states that Gunn would pose as Bieber and promise the girls things like concert tickets in exchange for topless photos. Once he would get the topless photos he would allegedly blackmail the girls into sending more explicit photos or he would publish their photos on the web. Investigators say that Gunn preyed upon girls from ages 9 to 16 throughout the world.

Gunn was already in custody for allegedly running a similar blackmail plot in Alabama. He would pose on Facebook as a new kid in town and would befriend high school age girls and try to get them to send him inappropriate photos.

In the Bieber scheme he would use such screen names as Justin Babin, justinqazabc123, and surprise.suprise1. In the Facebook scheme he would use the alias of Tyler Mileke.

If convicted on all the Florida charges he’s looking at 50 years. Not that I have a problem with that but here’s the thing. Gunn’s charges stem mostly from child porn and harassment charges. So far there’s no evidence that he met any of these girls and molested them. So why is that child molesters that actually rape their victims get far less time than scumbags like Gunn?

And again parents, no child, especially a 9-year-old girl, needs to have their own webcam and be on Omegle. Remember, their motto is ‘Talk with strangers.’ You wouldn’t let them talk to a stranger on the street so why would you let them talk to one in your own home?
