Canvas isn’t just for artists and the outdoors anymore: It’s a great fabric for durable, stylish handbags. Depending on the design and pattern of the bag, a canvas handbag can be a great accessory for casual luncheons, shopping trips, days at the office or nights on the town.

Cleaning your canvas handbag requires just a few steps, and you’ll have a fresh, clean handbag for your next party when you finish. Cleaning Canvas Handbags:

1. Crumple sheets of tissue paper. Insert the paper into the main compartment of the purse. You do not need to remove any items, because the tissue paper will fill up the remaining space. This will maintain the shape of the handbag while you clean the outside of it.

2. Fill a large bowl with cold water. Dunk a soft cloth in the water and wring out completely. The cloth needs to be damp but not saturated with the water so that it won’t damage the canvas.

3. Hold the purse at a 45-degree angle. Blot the entire side of the bag with the damp cloth. Never rub the canvas; instead, dab it gently. This will lift out some of the stuck-on or set-in dirt.

4. Add a drop of baby shampoo to the cloth. Rub the cloth together to form lather, and then dab the entire moist side of the canvas handbag with the foam.

5. Rinse and wring out the cloth well. Use running water to remove the remaining soap from the cloth, if necessary. Once the cloth is clean, blot the bag again to remove the remaining shampoo residue.

6. Stand the purse upright in a safe area. Allow it to dry overnight or for roughly five to six hours. Remove the tissue paper once the purse is dry.

Warnings:

1. Never use a washing machine to clean your canvas handbag.

2. Never soak or submerge the handbag in standing water. Always use a small amount of cold water and blot.

The silhouettes of the 1950s and 1960s make a strong return, with shapes that accentuate curves and foster femininity. The aesthetic is decidedly Mad Men, the look is versatile and fun. A hip-hugging sheath dress with a below-the-knee hem is the ultimate in hourglass dressing, while the full circle skirt and dress remain at the core of the trend.
By day it’s all about high waists, wide legs, soft blouses and ’70s accessories. By night, all that shimmers is gold. Flowing, draping dresses in high-shine fabrics or metallic hues are perfect for evening ’70s glamour. Be bold and don’t hold back, this look is about balancing softness with boldness.
Military fashion

We’ll forgive you if your first thought is “military, again?”. Yes, military remains a trend for Autumn / Fall 2010 but not as you’ve previously come to know it. Following on from Spring 2010 the women’s military trend, like the men’s (below), turns away from the pomp and ceremony of military inspired clothing we’ve become accustomed to, and takes its cues from 20th Century military uniforms. From army green to shearling lined boots, it’s now a trend that’s far more subtle but no less appealing.
It’s not necessarily about wearing your smalls in the street in the cold of Winter, but wearing underwear as outerwear is never-the-less a trend for Autumn (Fall) / Winter 2010. A mixture of sexuality and femininity, the trend encompasses everything from exposed bras and stay ups right through to delicate laces. Given it’s for the colder months there’s also a strong undercurrent of layering lingerie inspired pieces into outerwear.
Leather clothing

We’re in two minds about including leather clothing in a list of trends. Yes, it is on trend but it’s hard to categorise. You see, it works in with so many other trends and isn’t a style unto itself. You’ll wear it with military and you’ll buy hot pants made out of it. Nor is there anything new in wearing leather itself. But include it we must, you see the leather trend is extending into pretty much every other trend for the season. You name it, it’ll be an option for your wardrobe in the colder months. Leather shorts, leather dresses, leather leggings… and more.
Buttoned-up collars

Refined sophistication underlies this burgeoning trend; so store those sloppy boyfriend shirts and revealing open collars. Whether it’s a sheer blouse, a crisp business shirt, or an elegant shirt dress, the only way to wear it in 2010 and 2011 is to button it up. All the way up.
Cut out clothing

Normally a clothing style exclusive to Spring / Summer, the cut out / cutaway made a big impact on the Autumn / Fall catwalks. And it did so for more than clothing, but accessories as well. Seen in a variety of styles, with the cut out pieces worked directly on top of skin or ‘filled in’ with sheer fabrics, the cutaway detailing can be worked from the subtle to the sexy. Designed for the milder days, you can read up on the cut out clothing trend by following the link.

Knee high socks

Given that thigh high boots are on trend (see below) and that they can’t be worn every day (unless you’ve amassed a big collection) there has to be an alternative with similar appeal. Hence for Autumn / Fall 2010 you’ll find yourself rummaging through your sock draw and donning a pair of knee high socks. Or over the knee socks. Or thigh high socks. From the sporty to the sparkly, to layerings of socks over tights; a great pair of socks can add that extra, and much needed, eye catching detail to an outfit.
When the warm weather turns to Autumn, and Autumn turns to Winter, we often reach for our black tights as a legwear staple. How about trying white for a fresh, bright change? Whether you wear them vintage-style with a minidress and bold colours, or all light hues like a fairytale snow queen, there are various looks you can create.
Despite having been popular on the catwalks, the camel coat didn’t make a strong appearance on the streets until late Winter 2010. We blame that fact on the fierce weather that blighted so many seasons. Better in Autumn and in late Winter (with Spring on the horizon), the camel coat is the alternative to the classic trench in 2010.
Sheer clothing

Cut out and sheer? No, we haven’t got our seasons mixed up. Yes, sheer pieces are in for the cold months. Yes, we agree that sounds a little strange. But no, it doesn’t look strange. Anything but. Mixed with fine laces, the sheer trend in 2010 mixes elegance with sex appeal – and isn’t that the current, overarching theme to all fashion trends? Come this Autumn / Fall have the confidence to mix your sheer clothing with other trends and key looks (see the bottom of this article for more) and you’ll be onto a winner. Just be conscious of the fact that sheer pieces are revealing, and that means extra care. Seen on the catwalks of Halston and Preen, amongst others, capes in their various forms will be amongst the most elegant of fashion trends. And yet it doesn’t have to be. Capable of being mixed up and styled in a plethora of ways, this is a style that will suit both high fashion and those days when you just want to throw something on.

When you’re going on a trip, it can be easy to succumb to the temptation to pack everything you own. Instead, look for clothing and shoes that are appropriate for the destination, weather, activities and unexpected events. When in doubt, choose travel clothing that can be used in a variety of situations or places. This will allow you to pack lighter and travel with ease. As you choose clothing for a trip, resist the urge to pack items you probably won’t need.

Choosing Travel Clothing:

Pack for the weather. If you’ll be traveling in the winter, choose warm layers and a non-bulky jacket; for summer travel, pick lightweight layers and a medium-weight jacket for cooler days. For in-between seasons, pack lightweight items that can be layered based on varying daily temperatures: Tank tops, light T-shirts, sweaters and leggings are good mix-and-match items. Be sure to take a rain shell and a light thermal jacket to use as all-purpose outerwear. Search for weather reports online before you pack to see what your destination will be like.

Choose activity-appropriate clothing. If you plan to spend most of your trip outside, look for travel clothing that will wick moisture away from your body. You might also choose items which can handle extreme stretches and resist tearing, like specially designed outdoor pants; some even zip off at the knee to create shorts. If your vacation will largely involve sightseeing and shopping, however, choose comfortable, stylish travel clothing that will be easy to move in for hours at a time — nothing tight or binding. Remember to bring modest clothing if you plan on visiting any religious sites, like cathedrals.

Expect the unexpected. Bring at least one evening outfit for your trip. Even if you don’t anticipate going to high-end restaurants or clubs, pack clothes that are suitable for a nice occasion. That way, if an unexpected opportunity comes your way, you will be able to accept without reservations. Choose an outfit that won’t wrinkle easily and, for women, bring a light wrap or scarf that can be used in place of a jacket.

Choose comfortable footwear. Almost all travel includes a fair amount of walking, so pack shoes that will be feel good even after hours of sightseeing. Look for shoes that are specifically designed for walking; sneakers with a good arch support and cushioned sole are best. Flip-flops and sandals tend to be too flat and can cause severe foot pain after a day of walking. A good option is athletic-inspired shoes, which are more lightweight and streamlined as well as stylish. Bring one pair of evening-appropriate shoes that you can wear for special events.

Travel Clothing Tips:

When in doubt, don’t pack anything you wouldn’t wear at home. Those impulse-buy skinny jeans are not going to be any more comfortable when you travel.

Bring extra socks and underwear, especially if you are traveling in a wet climate, because they might get wet on an excursion. They are also a hassle to replace when you’re away from home.

If you are tired of visiting the same stores at the local shopping malls, save time and money by clothes shopping online. The convenience of shopping online 24 hours a day makes browsing a variety of clothing and shoes as simple as the click of a mouse. Compare prices and selections quickly from the early morning hours to late at night in stores online. Before purchasing clothing, follow several tips to have a rewarding shopping experience.

Online Shopping for Clothes:

1. Sizes: Know your sizes before clothes shopping online. Have a friend or tailor measure your waist, chest, hips, inseam and arm length. Keep the tape firm and do not allow it to droop when measuring the circumference of the waist, chest and hips. Place your hands on your hips to measure arm length; measure shoulder to elbow and then elbow to wrist and add measurements together. Don’t suck in your stomach or stand perfectly straight; stand naturally when being measured or clothing will not fit well. Keep measurements handy when comparing clothing sizes. Measure yourself again if you gain or lose a considerable amount of weight; don’t guess by simply moving up or down a size. Note what brand’s or company’s clothing fits best before shopping online.

2. Details: Examine all the details of the clothes while Internet shopping. Many stores online allow clothing to be seen from different angles. Make sure to read all the specifics including the type of fabric, recommended cleaning instructions and color selection. Compare online retailers’ descriptions–some retailers will give much more in-depth information on clothing items. Read recent buyers’ reviews of the garment before making a purchase.

3. Sales: Sign up for e-mail discounts from your favorite shops online. You will be the first to be notified of shipping specials and other discounts. Online specials are just as common as those at shopping malls.

4. Returns: Remember to check the Web site’s return policy while Internet shopping. Even the most scrupulous shopper can end up with an item that doesn’t fit or is the wrong color. Learn how many days or weeks you have to return items, and understand whether refunds are issued and if they include shipping charges. Do not remove any tags or open items until you have firmly decided you will keep the item. Shop online only with companies that have a clearly-written return policy and a customer service number.

In 1964, when British Invasion bands like the Beatles and the Rolling Stones dominated American musical tastes, a little known San Francisco band was about to start another, entirely different, musical revolution. This band consisted of guitarists Jerry Garcia and Bob Weir, organist Ron McKernan, bassist Phil Lesh and drummer Bill Kreutzmann. They called themselves “The Grateful Dead.”

Today the Grateful Dead are synonymous with musical greatness. After all, they ranked number 55 on Rolling Stone’s list of 100 Greatest Bands of All Time and they received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2007. But what is it that makes the Grateful Dead so great? For many, the answer to this question lies in the uniqueness of the band’s sound and the fan culture that evolved from it.

The Grateful Dead’s unique sound arose in part from the different background of each member. For example, Jerry Garcia had a love for bluegrass and the banjo, bassist Phil Lesh was a classically trained trumpet player with a music theory background, drummer Mickey Hart had an interest in eclectic drumming styles, and drummer Bill Kreutzmann had a jazz background. These interests, coupled with the band’s decision to use electric guitars after seeing a performance by the Lovin’ Spoonful, created the genre bending sound that has been a signature of the Grateful Dead. In any given Grateful Dead album or song, one might hear a fusion of blues, jazz, folk, bluegrass, gospel, rock and other genres.

Apart from their musical style, the Grateful Dead’s live performances were another factor that elevated them to the status of greatness. The Grateful Dead were known for touring frequently and they performed thousands of concerts throughout their career. What was special about these concerts was that each one was different. Unlike most bands, the Grateful Dead did not play a specific set each night, preferring instead to perform whatever songs they felt like performing at the time. The band also featured a lot of improvisation at their concerts, and as a result became the first “jam band,” a term that refers to bands that improvise and mix musical styles.

Because each Grateful Dead concert was different, some fans wanted to see as many as they could and became so dedicated that they followed the band from concert to concert, often supporting themselves by selling t-shirts, food and other memorabilia at the concerts. These loyal fans became known as “Deadheads.” Although these Deadheads were loyal, it could be said that the Grateful Dead were just as loyal to them in return. In fact, in the beginning of their career, the Grateful Dead even provided free food and lodging to attendees at their Haight-Ashbury area concerts. Additionally, throughout their career they allowed fans to tape their concerts in designated taping areas. Fans were even allowed to share their recordings with each other, provided they did not attempt to make a profit from them.

The Grateful Dead enjoyed a lengthy career, from 1964 until 1995 when they formally disbanded after Jerry Garcia’s death from a heart attack. Since then, remaining members of the Grateful Dead have embarked on solo projects including Phil Lesh’s band, Phil Lesh and Friends, and Bob Weir’s band, RatDog. In 2002, remaining members Phil Lesh, Bob Weir, Mickey Hart and Bruce Hornsby briefly toured as “The Other Ones” until they changed their name to “The Dead” in 2003. In 2008, The Dead performed a few shows in support of Barack Obama’s presidential campaign. These shows spurred rumors that the Dead might tour in 2009. These rumors turned out to be true as the band announced tour dates for a tour that starts on April 12, 2009 in Greensboro, North Carolina. The Dead’s lineup for the 2009 tour includes Bob Weir, Phil Lesh, Bill Kreutzmann, Mickey Hart, Warren Hayes and Jeff Chimenti.

Four-in-hand: The four-in-hand tie is the standard men’s necktie. Often made of silk, these ties can also be made out of silk-like synthetics, cotton, linen or wool. The fabric is cut in three segments on the bias — diagonally from the fabric — which lets the tie lay flat. These ties are always lined to help the fabric knot properly. Four-in-hand ties usually range in length from 55 inches to 60 inches, with big-and-tall ties coming in at about 62 inches. Different lengths work for men with different heights and allow for different knots to be tied. The width of ties changes with fashion; the classic width is 3-1/4 inches, but you may see trendy ties as narrow as 1-inch wide.

Six-fold and seven-fold ties: Made using the traditional method of folding a square of silk six or seven times, these luxurious neckties are not as common and can be quite expensive because of all the silk required to make them. Six- and seven-fold silk ties are not lined.

Bow ties: Available in two styles, the straight batwing or the more familiar butterfly, bow ties are a jaunty alternative to regular ties. A popular element of black-tie dressing, bow ties are right at home with a tuxedo and cummerbund. Bow-tie lengths are the same sizes as dress shirt collar lengths. If you haven’t worn a bow tie before but would like to try it, practice tying one around your leg just like you would tie your shoes.

Choosing the perfect neckwear Ties have been used to show club affiliations, family background, team spirit and more. Every tie sends some kind of message, so make sure your tie is saying what you want it to say. Here are a few things to consider when you’re choosing which necktie to wear:

Solid ties: Solid ties are the simplest to coordinate with your button-down shirts and suits. A patterned shirt or a white shirt could each work with a versatile solid-colored tie. When pairing a solid tie with a patterned shirt, choose a color that is in the pattern. With a white shirt, choose a color that complements your suit or blazer.

Striped ties: Striped ties are a tradition in menswear, and a striped tie is almost always appropriate. A striped tie can be worn easily with a white dress shirt, but you can also wear a striped tie with a striped shirt as long as the colors are complementary and the stripes are not the same size. If you’re wearing a striped tie with a striped shirt, make sure your suit is a solid color, so the look isn’t overwhelming.

Patterned ties: Paisley, polka dot, abstract designs, even flowers decorate some ties. Patterned ties follow the same rules as striped ties: Make sure the pattern isn’t the same size as a pattern on your shirt and choose a pattern in complementary colors to your shirt. Patterns in subdued colors can be appropriate for more formal occasions, but save the pink flowers for a garden wedding.

Novelty ties: Ties with prints featuring holiday themes, sports teams or cartoon characters should be reserved for light-hearted occasions. Novelty fabrics, like snake skin or stingray skin, also make for ties that can’t always be worn as office wear. Depending on where you live, you may also consider bolo ties — which consist of a braided leather string with a decorative clasp — to be novelty ties, so you’ll want to consider the occasion and the location before you choose to wear one.

Caring for neckties Remove it carefully: When you take off your tie, undo the knot by doing the knot steps backwards. Don’t pull the thinner end of the tie through; this will cause the fabric to wear out quickly. Professional care: Occasionally your ties will need to have stains removed, and you’ll want to have your ties dry cleaned whether or not they’re made of silk. This will help your ties retain their shape and luster. Store them properly: Hanging your ties on a special tie hanger will let wrinkles fall out. Make sure not to overload the hanger, as this can cause more wrinkles. You can also roll your ties up loosely and keep them in a drawer. Knit ties should be rolled for storage, not hung.

Common neckties questions

I have a vintage tie I really like, but I think it may be too wide to wear now. What can I do? While traditional ties are about 3-1/4 inches wide, the width of your tie just needs to reflect the width of your lapels. If you want to rock the retro style, wear your vintage wide tie with a vintage suit. If it’s just the fabric that you like, you can take your tie to a tailor. It’s very easy for a tailor to narrow down or even shorten ties, and it shouldn’t be very expensive.

How can I keep my silk ties from wrinkling when I pack them for business trips? Prevent wrinkles by gently rolling your ties up and tucking them into a shoe. You don’t want to iron silk ties, as this could ruin them, so if you still end up with some wrinkles, try hanging your tie up in the bathroom while you take a shower; the steam should release the wrinkles gently.

Does my pocket square need to match my tie? Traditionally, men have always matched their pocket squares and neckties, but if you’re not a traditional guy, you don’t need to match them if you don’t want to. If you want to wear a pocket square with your tie, and you don’t have a matching one, you can’t go wrong with a plain white handkerchief, but feel free to mix prints or solids that are in the same color family — if the occasion isn’t too formal.
