Rodney Parker & 50 Peso Reward are set to unleash their second full-length effort ‘The Lonesome Dirge’ on April 8th, 2008 and are jumpstarting the release with an aggressive tour that will head West through the month of March before traversing the rest of the nation throughout ‘08 in support of their new record.

While Parker and The Pesos found regional success in Texas on the strength of their remarkable 2004 self-released debut, ‘Blow The Soot Out’, the Denton, TX-based quintet are poised to break out nationally with ‘The Lonesome Dirge’ – a breathtaking, often heart-stopping, album brimming with Americana anthems, harrowing Southern Gothic balladry and roadhouse rockers that channels the likes of Steve Earle, Old 97s and Son Volt.

The album immediately stampedes out of gate with the unbridled dynamics of the driving opener “Firefight,” before shooting straight into the passionate number “10 lb Test,” where, amid indelible hooks and stinging guitar, Parker’s warm, whiskey-soaked voice sweetly cracks with a touch of wild honey. “Brother” is a moving ballad that culminates with not only proud, pounding choruses but also showcases the volatile musical dexterity of this explosive outfit, while songs such as “Wild Man From Borneo,” “Tell Me What It Is” and “I’m Never Getting Married” are performed with both fiery passion and clenched-fisted conviction. The band also manages to breathe further life into a spirited reworking of Springsteen’s “Atlantic City,” while the album’s sparse, haunting closing number “11 Hours,” coincidentally, hearkens back to the ghostly acoustic landscape of Bruce’s Nebraska album.

What these eleven-tracks – alternately capable of touching the heart and loosening the floorboards – prove more than anything else, though, is that Rodney Parker is one of those rare singer/songwriters to be reckoned with. While the word ‘masterpiece’ may seem a bit lofty to attach so readily to any record this early in an artist’s career, ‘The Lonesome Dirge’ is as worthy a contender as you’re likely to find today.

“Country and folk rarely offer the punch and integrity Parker applies to the majority of this fine release. Void of slickness, this is music built from sweat and an intensity only the rural experience can provide.” – Dallas Observer

Wildflower Records artist Amy Speace will be touring throughout November in the UK, Germany, Austria and Luxemburg in support of her recently released album ‘Songs For Bright Street’ in German through O-tone/Edel and the rest of Europe through ADA/Ryko.

It follows radio airplay across Germany, with some stations spinning the songs from the album up to 25 times a week as well as great reviews in German press and the UK:

“[Songs for Bright Street] is a superior example of stunning music at its best … guaranteed to make waves this side of the Atlantic. … a unique country-folk sound that can be best described as an Americana Dido… both illuminating and effortly accessible.” The Verve (UK)

“A fully convincing Singer-Songwriter / Roots-Rock, in short Americana album, that excels with a refreshing variety, superb musicians and wonderfully crafted lyrics. Speace’s lyrical elegance and the inventiveness of her finely selected metaphors intertwine very convincingly with the craft of her band, The Tearjerks and give each of the 13 songs its very unique identity. Boredom never comes near the listener, of course.” Home of Rock (Germany)

Amy Speace has already won a loyal grass-roots fan base, thanks in large part to live performances that merge warmth, humor and emotional immediacy, and to a tireless touring schedule that’s already taken her across the United States. She’s also won considerable critical acclaim, with The Village Voice observing that Speace is “taking her Americana away from twangy contemplation toward tangy confrontation” and noting that she’s “not another of those breathy would-be child poets, but a real singing writer of songs.” Time Out New York stated, “Amy Speace plays sweet, twangy folk music with a clear voice and an innocent vulnerability,” while The Nashville Scene noted that she “balances wry humor with open-hearted honesty.” And renowned Nashville critic Robert K. Oermann, writing in Music Row, dubbed her a “new star.”

What I want to know is – if he meant US sales, UK sales, both or worldwide? Either way, 50 Cent’s statement was good publicity for both him and Kanye West.

Robyn is a Swedish singer just coming on to the UK scene, and her latest single, “With Every Heartbeat”, (a collaboration with Kleerup) has been going around my head for days. She reached number 1 in the UK charts this month and I can hear why.

The first time I heard “With Every Heartbeat” was when I watched the video for it. I immediately thought of Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush. There’s something about the video and her singing style that reminded me of them. The good thing, though – is that Robyn does have her own sound.

“On paper” I wouldn’t normally go for music so sweet and poppy, but there’s just something about the arrangement and the mix – the sounds come together brilliantly. Of course, there’s also Robyn’s endearing voice to consider. She has one of the best voices on the scene as of late. It’s so refreshing to hear.

There’s a stripped down “Live Lounge” piano version of Robyn singing “With Every Heartbeat” on her Myspace page, and it is an incredible rendition of the dance mix. The other songs listed sound great, and you can also hear an album sampler.

Greasy twang, driving rhythms, a sense of melody and brevity contribute to a sound that draws on influences from the entirety of rock and roll’s storied history. This is The Bosch, a New York City quartet who sounds something like what might happen “if Brian Wilson, Dick Dale, and Joey Ramone stayed up all night taking speed pills and Ritalin.”

With the release of the new EP, Hurry Up, the band plans to introduce more listeners to their high-tempo, high-volume melodic pop music. Matt Harrison (guitar/vocals) and Holt Richardson (drums/vocals) trace their musical collaborations back to high school days. Joined by Andrew Raff (saxophone/keyboards) and Valerie Sauve (bass/vocals), The Bosch sound like a raucous mix of The Clash, The Violent Femmes and Phil Spector with a side of Springsteen and a dash of Man… Or Astroman.

The band’s previous album, Buy One, Get One, debuted at #21 on the FMQB Specialty FM Alternative Charts and enjoyed spins at hundreds of college radio stations nationwide. In addition it was also featured on XM Radio’s RADAR Report and Unsigned at WOXY.com. The Bosch’s music has also been heard in independent films, the soundtrack of MTV reality programs, on video games and in national advertising campaigns for Volkswagen and Burger King.

After Hurry Up proves to have similar impact, The Bosch are confident that they will shortly be within striking distance of that ultimate rock star fantasy: the chance to hunt whales in a hovercraft.

The Bosch will be touring throughout the Fall and Winter in support of Hurry Up and will be headlining a special NYC show at The Mercury Lounge Friday, August 17th 2007 where they’ll be previewing material from their forthcoming release for both rabid fans and the uninitiated alike. Kentucky-bred angular-disco-punkers Chico Fellini, featuring The Bosch’s own producer extraordinaire Duane Lundy on guitar, will be kicking things off.

Here’s what people are already saying about THE BOSCH:

“Imagine if Brian Wilson, Dick Dale, and Joey Ramone stayed up all night taking speed pills and Ritalin. The resulting album would bear a striking resemblance to The Bosch’s latest album. The Bosch play an upbeat style of rock that combines the colorful production values of Beach Boys with surf rock energy and punk rock grit. Fast and focused, the album drives ahead at full speed, ripping through nine songs in just twenty-five minutes. Just when it seems you’ve got The Bosch figured out, they fire off a song that defies expectation, making their album that much more rewarding in the process.” – The Deli Magazine (NYC)

” … an enjoyable set of lo-fi, upbeat party rock.” – FMQB

” … fast paced, high energy poppy punk.” – What’s Up Magazine

“Mixing the Rolling Stones ’60s R&B pop with some frenetic New York punk energy a la The Ramones and New York Dolls, this is a feel good garage rock party album that will have you on your feet, dancing and sweating madly before the first track has finished.” – Heathen Angel

[9 out of 10] “Marvelous!” – Atomic Duster

“Stripped down garage rock with horns to boot, The Bosch knows how to have fun. A ska meets garage, meets punk vibe with easygoing, catchy lyrics that draws comparisons to music as old as The Stooges or the Clash and as current as The White Stripes and The Vines.” – Vail Daily News

“… a cool hard rock experience.” – Babysue / LMNOP

“… the ultimate feel-good record: Humorous, often silly lyrics, smart horn arrangements, and thoughtful songwriting that’s neither trite nor too vintage for modern ears.” – Silent Uproar

“With the recent passing of the great Link Wray it’s good to see bands still relying on a riff heavy sound unafraid to bring in horns and anything else they feel will add to the stew.” – AmerIcana UK

[4 out of 5] “Think New York Dolls meets Hoodoo Gurus with flashes of Jim Carroll, Lou Reed, the White Stripes, Violent Femmes and Sha Na Na plus many more I can’t put my finger on at the moment. Extremely infectious rock n’ roll with no noticeable filler. Hell, this is another one of those albums that sounds like something you’ve owned for years. You could play this and the Dead Boys side by side and neither would sound out of place.
Very highly recommended!” – Ear Candy

Bitter:Sweet is set to release their latest album, ‘The Remix Game’ on August 7th, 2007.
I’ve been listening to Bitter:Sweet’s tracks – from both ‘The Remix Game’ and ‘The Mating Game’ albums, and can they groove. Shana Halligan’s laid back vocals and harmonies alongside a brilliant mix of electronica and trance produced by Kiran Shahani (The Supreme Beings of Leisure) is refreshing, and it’s interesting to hear the new mix of funky, jazzy, house remixed versions of the songs as well.

Vandaveer is the town-folk, city-pop, solo song and dance routine stated for the record and committed to tape by one Mark Charles Heidinger. In recent seasons this Mark Charles character traversed the mighty American highways spreading golden pop rock cheer and debauchery as principle singer, songwriter, hand-clapper and chorus-yelper for The Apparitions. Where The Apparitions cast five hearty votes for bombast, electricity and drums, Vandaveer steers left, detouring through the quieter side of song doing his very best to learn what makes an acoustic guitar the world’s finest storytelling machine.

Weaned on the cadence and vibrations of a mighty pipe organ-driven church choir, Vandaveer picked up his pop’s old Gibson J-50 at the age of 15, butchered a Nirvana tune, and went on his merry way to learn his new craft. Born in cloudy Ohio, raised in the great state of Kentucky, and currently camped out in our nation’s fair capital, Vandaveer found in his heart a volume of tunes about love, death, redemption and flight and a stirring itch to sing his way through the dark.

Vandaveer has enjoyed the good fortune of performing with a host of worthy and humbling artists including The Ditty Bops, Smog, Tim Easton, Steve Forbert, Paleo, Phonograph, The Scourge of The Sea, and his dear friends in DC’s ramshackle collective, The Federal Reserve.

Hooked on the sugary, melodic charm of McCartney’s early solo records, the theatrical grit of every Tom Waits song ever recorded, and the humbling wit of Dylan’s finest hours, Vandaveer lingers comfortably at the corner of folk and pop.

Vandaveer’s debut record, Grace & Speed, will be released on March 20th, 2007 on Washington, DC’s new imprint, Gypsy Eyes Records. Extensive national touring to follow…

Here’s what people are already saying about Vandaveer:

“You may not yet know the name Mark Charles Heidinger, but you should. When he’s not tearing it up with The Apparitions, he’s creating well-crafted modern folk music under the moniker Vandaveer. Grace and Speed is superb from start to finish, showing Heidinger’s gift for storytelling and sense of of economy.” – Performing Songwriter

“The music is just beautiful, from the harmony to the instrumentation. Folk definitely, and very stripped down at times. Comparisons to Dylan get old fast, but you can’t help but feel some Bob channeling in the wonderfully simple opening track “How Many Takes it Takes” and “Out Past the Moat.” – On Tap / Washington DC

“Indie folk with Bob Dylan influences in the lyrical department gets a raw stripped down treatment here… host to a thick melodic undercurrent, pleasantly used beats, and elegant acoustic guitars.” - Smother Magazine

“Vandaveer sang songs that were at times humorous, poignant and thoughtful. On the folk scale, he falls somewhere between traditional and alternative Americana, with nods to Nashville and his smoky-yet-syrupy voice is reminiscent of M. Ward… the crowd seemed smitten.” – NBC-TV / The DC Scene

“The DC-based artist creates music that is much different from his previous band, exploring acoustic, pop-tinged, Americana styled songs this time around.” – IndiePulse

“Warm and uncomplicated… an authentic and honest sounding album from a talented singer/songwriter with his heart in the right place.” – Rootstime

“…troubadour folk of Bob Dylan as well as a bit of his way with words, but there’s also a Crosby, Stills and Nash California vocal harmonies sound peeking through. You can hear the “indie” influences in the processed vocals, beats and somber themes of “Marianne You’ve Done It Now”. This is a pretty auspicious start of the year.” – songs: Illinois

“…ever-fashionable honey-sweet folk ballads with an occasional dark edge.” – Read Express

“While musically related to the traditional folk of Bob Dylan, Paul Simon and even Josh Ritter, Vandaveer’s lovely rootsy approach is decidedly more contemporary. Ritter’s music, for example, is better suited for coffee houses, Vandaveer’s the bars. And with Dutch blood running through his veins there are enough bars in his ancestors’ native country to showcase his stage talent here for a long time.” – Hanx / The Netherlands

” … a great voice.” – DC Music Scene

“…a fresh and convincing manner that at times is reminiscent of not only a young Dylan, but Tim Hardin, Nick Drake and Donovan as well. A jewel of a record.” – AltCountry

“When the talented Mr. Mark Charles Heidinger isn’t playing in bands like The Apparitions or These United States, he’s working on a solo project he calls Vandaveer. Listen to his Grace & Speed debut and you’ll easily hear how deeply he’s been influenced by greats like Nick Drake and Tom Waits.” – 5 Acts
