These are the on location paintings of my most recent trip to Spain. I was there in October, and had a blast. Met a lot of people, enjoyed see David and Ivan again at the Hotel Bandolero. Painting, food, wine, shopping, Who could ask for more?

8X10 painting of the cabin...done very quickly..about 30 minutes. This is on a hand made surface, using Clear acrylic gesso as the base.

Summer Cabin I

I haven't posted in a while, so needed to update...This is a 16X20 on Black Richeson pastel paper. I spent all my summers here through age 15...lots of history and wonderful memories are tied into this place. It's changed some, but I will never forget...

I had a little bit of a struggle with it, and not sure why...so at one point, I stopped and did another smaller very quick painting of the same...posting next.

Arroyo Stream

Very rough plain air exercise in running water.

The road down to the river is very narrow and rough, so we were taken down in groups and it was an experience!

Once there, we walked in to the area by the stream and painted.

The light changed quickly, so had to be sharp!

I did this one piece on Wallis paper, and I struggled with the layering of the colors. This paper was my favorite, but I have not been as pleased with the results as much recently.

Bottom of the Bridge in Ronda

Everyone was painting the bridge that connect the older part of town, but the light on the olive trees caught my eye, so I did this really quickly! About 30 minutes.

I walked down the hill in Juzcar, and painted this little piece. It is 5X7 so rather small. It is on matboard, coated with clear gesso. I used a yellow ochre to prime the board, the applied the pastels.

The chestnut trees were bursting, and this view is from the hotel terrace also...the light was fabulous that morning.

We all have this inner voice that wants to tell the world how we see it, feel it, and perceive the concepts of the life we see around us. Most however, don't get that chance to find the conduit to achieve that communication.

I have seen retirees who, after working jobs, raising children, losing spouses etc... find that voice they never knew or had the time to find.

Whether you are a beginner, or more experienced, never fail to stop and look at the world with that eye of the artist. I am constantly amazed the many times I have driven, or walked the same path, and looked up, and thought, wow! I never saw that quite in this way before.

I have started laying in the pastel, sky background trees, and buildings. The olive trees in the left are "silvery" type greens.

I used Prismacolor paint markers to do most of the under painting, along with some watercolor washes. These are great to achieve bright color underneath the pastel layers.

Am looking forward to my trip to Spain, in Juzcar, near Malaga.

Apparently, a small village, no English rarely, and beautiful mountains.

A painting paradise, according to Maggie.

Pastels are so much fun to travel and paint en plein aire. I have a guerrilla box I took to France, and this was great, as my tripod fits directly on, and the pastels are stored inside.

All fits in a backpack, so is very portable.
