Previously I posted this article about ways small businesses could use Pinterest

So here we go…Pinterest User Data is as follows (I am logged into my Google account and pulling this from Google today 03/19/2012):

26% of users are Male
74% of users are Female

25% of users are between the ages of 25 to 34
28% of users are between the ages of 35 to 44
26% of users are between the ages of 45 to 54

So what’s the big deal right? Well this is a sought after demographic. It’s no secret that women control most household purchases. It is also nothing new to want to reach these women online. Women in this demographic use the internet entirely differently than marketers would like to see them use the internet LOL. So here’s some raw data from Google:

The average household income for this group is mostly between $25k and $49k, and the other large portion is between $50k and $74k so again, THE demographic for a lot of businesses!:

So the next question is what does all this mean to you, and how do you use this to help your business? I’ll be back with more on the subject, but if you need Pinterest, or any other social media marketing please feel free to contact me for help. Here’s a heavy hitter in all the typical social media metrics. The data on this site is the stuff myths are made of, the kinda growth and usage you would say “yeah wouldn’t it be awesome if we launched and had (x) users and growth…” Well Pinterest has done just that. I will follow up with some actual demographic and usage statistics next week.

So I have a client who sells custom jewelry, and she asked me to look into Pinterest and see if it would be a good fit for her business. Well needless to say I was impressed with what I found. At first glance I clicked around the website and was drawn in by all the images and the visual style, it is simple to use and very addictive from the moment you enter the website. Here is what I see when I login to Pinterest:

If you can not log into Pinterest, just like our new Facebook page, then send me an email…and I’ll send you an invite : )

So back to the point on how all of this can help you get business:

You can use Pinterest to do market research, think of it as a focus group to get first hand reactions. If you need to poll women under 45 this is your sweet-spot to see what get’s shared or “re-pinned”. Watch how many re-pins you get and use the typical social media metrics and watch the amplification and social share outside of pinterest. You can ask fans which images are their favorite and even engage them further and ask them to post pictures of their own where they are offering up suggestions and clever uses of your products.

Sell Products, yep just put a price in your description and you have a potential viral banner for your products. So with a little creativity you can design product images that are good enough to share and voila there you go. There are loads of people doing this, and if you use some SEO techniques and stay within a keyword theme and sort your boards accordingly you can get the same results within Pinterest searches as you would in any other environment. Plus if you have a good canonical Information architecture inside Pinterest that will be reflected in your Google search results and everything else so amplification could be very well beyond Pinterest. A quick search for “$29″ turned up this and many more.

Pinterest is a good place to offer coupons or exclusive content, it is of course measurable since you know the source, and again this a very targeted demographic so you can offer other things than women’s products. For all of you people reading this that are married, it will be no surprise to you that this demographic controls most of the decisions in household purchases…LOL. Showing actual examples of shutters your shutter company has installed or even wood flooring and furniture recovering would be very effective, I see huge potential for promotion in those and other areas. 20% off our gorgeous outdoor shutters custom fit and colors for your home – sound good yet?

So there are a few ideas to get you started, and if you’re stuck moving forward contact us for some research and planning to get your Pinterest Campaign off on stable footing. I’ll be back with more information like usage statistics and demographics to help you out, so please share this with others and keep coming back for more information you can use.

No doubt videos get tons of views and most visitors to your site would easier watch your video than read two paragraphs of your text. This chart really does not indicate video users, but it does clearly show dominance in user engagement. In the war for Facebook fans video throws a heavy blow to heavily funded campaigns and leads by a clear margin.

Big brands have big marketing budgets and use other forms of media to gain “fans” on Facebook. What surprising to me is that nutella is on this list and at the same time that angry birds is so low on the list. Marketing mix is whats important when targeting your audience and clearly, at least for angry birds, Facebook fans is not necessary to dominate their market. Source
