I’ve been in the Berkshires 23 years. And the reason I’m here, is that I wanted to start some early childhood education programs that I had in my head. It could have been in Tennessee or Nevada or God knows where. But I paid a consulting group few hundred dollars to give me guidance.

So after they heard what I was up to, and I would need a sense of community for my children’s programs like Lee, and Lenox, Stockbridge, they guided me to come here. So I came up here, and for the first month or so I literally lived in a tent in Pittsfield State Forest. And then I found a house that I could rent in Pittsfield and moved here in Lenox.

So I came here totally on faith. I didn’t even know what the Berkshires were. So the whole point was to create programs that would serve pre-schools and, through them, the young children.

And I did something smart, initially, which was I spent a little over a year going to the pre-schools and going to childcare, the Berkshires, and children’s health program. And instead of telling them what I was going to do, I asked them: What do you need? So there’s been really a good foundation.

I discovered that they knew what they were doing. They were deeply dedicated and all were short on funds and resources. So instead of creating a program off on it’s own, I built a program that was integrated with children’s health program and with five pre-schools in South County. And the whole thing was to enable them to do what they were doing better. So instead of reinventing the wheel, I helped them to be better pre-schools and a better health program, because I was able to bring them the resources for them to do what they needed to do. It was their choice.

At each pre-school, I had a woman named Maggie Fuller, who is skilled in the schools and pre-schools. She would meet with the director of a school and maybe the directors and the teachers. And together, they worked up a written program: proposal about what they will do to make the school greater.

And then I brought in some experts when they needed them, but especially the money. So each school made itself better the way they wanted to do it. And that was the key to the whole thing. If you’re doing what you feel you want to do, you’d really get in and put your heart in it. So that was the foundation of it.

When we got the program going, in maybe 1992, Krishna Priya at the Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health wanted a community service program that Kripalu would fund that would be a “Thank you” to Lenox, Lee, and Stockbridge. But it was also good PR, that Kripalu was reaching out to help the community.

So she opened up a contest to see who could come up with the best community service idea that Kripalu would fund. And they had things like building an Om Café somewhere in Lenox. There’s was a lot of stuff that I thought was really absurd. Fortunately, she had a half-dozen, basically, Berkshire Kripalu community members who were professionals in business, or teachers, or public relations. And she gave them the assignment to follow me around and find out what I was talking about. So we went to each pre-school along with two of my volunteers.

At each pre-school, the school director said, “Henry is doing is exactly what we need, to observe the children and make our school better.” So at the end of the summer, all these volunteers, plus myself, made an enthusiastic presentation to Krishna Priya. She loved the whole idea, and that got us going. In the first year, Kripalu provided a hundred percent of my funding. So I got everything up and running and proved that it worked.

We had a whole package of programs. We brought in the resources each school needed to have better materials for the teachers to work with, like nature materials for example.

We have an absolutely glorious fitness program that evolved from Bonnie Prudden at the Academy for Mind Therapy and Physical Fitness here in Lenox. She had developed an exercise program for kids who are two, three, four years old, and we brought it in to five pre-schools in South Country. For about 20 minutes, the kids would go through a set routine exercise program, the same every day. We reached the point where four-year-old kids would lead part of the program because they love it.

Another other part of the program was a challenge course that the kids would go through with the teachers right with them. They would pull themselves across a sawhorse. They would jump on a trampoline. They would step between the rungs of a ladder. A three-year-old would say “Wow, I love this!”

At the same time, we measured the results. And they all came out with stronger abdomens, greater flexibility, and better health. So they were having a good time and, at the same time, shaping themselves up.

And then as they got older, they made a beeline for sports, because they had learned about balance, and confidence in themselves, and a love of physical activities. So that was gloriously good.

We found that in each of the pre-schools, the teachers were isolated from the other schools, because there was no money for them to be able to go on around visiting, and they knew each other as friends. So what we paid for them to have substitute teachers come in and take their place for a day. And a teacher could go to another pre-school in South County, and see what they were doing. So they learned from each other.

And then once a month, we had a catered dinner for them at Lenox Children Center. They would come in after work and get a meal without having to do any cooking. So that was a big attraction in itself. And sometimes I had a very skilled pre-school education woman who volunteered to lead a program where they would discuss things they wanted to. At other times, we bring in an expert on some subject. So, either way, they were all learning.

What I get is satisfaction. Basically, I’ve done this as a volunteer, not as a paid job. That’s basically where I’ve been at. But it’s very satisfying helping these young children get a great start in life.

Scott Robinson also said:

The reason I’m involved in Rotary is to give back to the community and to the international aspect of Rotary. I’ve been fortunate in life, and I want to share and to be able to give back to others. And so Rotary is an opportunity to work with adults, and be able to do something a little bit more meaningful in a community and throughout the world.

We moved to Berkshire County in 1970, and our kids became involved in 4H. We have four boys and so, being supportive parents, we became involved. In 1972, we started running our own 4H Club. And, at one point, we had as many as 35 kids on a weekly basis at our house involved in different activities.

I guess it’s all part of the Rotary model of Service Above Self. I started working with the 4H organization in getting a non-profit organization formed in 1979, because we were traveling at various locations to have a 4H Fair. And we wanted to find our own fairgrounds and develop it. So we had a donation of seven acres of land, and developed our own fairgrounds.

Through the years, we have been able to get to where we are today with the buildings and pavilions and horse rinks and bathroom facilities — all with water and electricity throughout the facility. So it’s been a fine time. The four boys are in their mid-40s today, but after they left home, I just kept staying involved. And it’s fun seeing the smiles on kids’ faces and watch them mature and grow at what they do. So that’s why I’m still involved in 4H.

Sara Singer, Ambassadorial Scholar kicked off the month with an inspirational talk at today’s meeting, a joint meeting with the Great Barrington Rotary Club. President Marianne Young welcomed our fellow Rotarians. November is the Rotary Foundation Month. Tri-Town’s Rotary Foundation Chair Carolyn Pierce has organized wonderful speakers for the month. Sara Singer, is the Ambassadorial Scholar for District 7890 (our district) during the Academic year 05-06. Representing the Northampton Rotary Sara chose to go to Limerick Ireland for her studies in Peace and Development at the Irish Institute where she did research for their conflict reduction handbook. She appreciated the cultural exchange and their interest in her Jewish background. She recounted about the controversy and protest over Shannon being a refueling point for American Troops headed to Irag; while the Irish Citizens appreciated American Foreign Investment that is creating jobs for Irish workers. “Okay to protest but not too loudly” was the sense she received during her stay. She is dedicated to community service having done many service projects including with gypsies in the aftermath of the Pakistan earthquake. She has worked in the Americorps program in Holyoke and has spoken at many local rotary clubs about her experience as an Ambassadorial Scholar. Her academic training has been at Wellesley and the University of Pennsylvania. Her presentation was inspirational and well received.

Judy Turtz Introduced Linda Cross, a health coach for Take Shape for Life. Linda began with telling her own story of having lost 100lbs and how she works at staying healthy. For her optimal health is defined as the best health you can reach for and so this definition must be individualized. She discussed the obesity epidemic, noting that this will be the first generation where their children will not outlive their parents. More than 50% of the US population is overweight and obese. We must change and changing your mindset not your diet can do this. It is a life style change to BESLIM awareness; (B)reakfast, (E)xercise, (S)upport, (L)ow fat meals, (I)ndividualized plans, and (M)onitoring the result. She mentioned how she monitors daily so that she can incrementallly work off weight that she may gain so that it is not a huge effort. She handed out guidelines for helping us understand whether we are overweight or obese or morbidly obese. For more information visit her website, www.Time2loseit.tsfl.com .

Nick Arienti introduced our speaker, Bob Nason, Lee Town Administrator who spoke of the challenges and opportunities of Lee.

1. Mill redevelopment
Only 1 of the 5 Lee mills remains, meaning loss of jobs. The mills need to be redeveloped to recover jobs. The closing of these mills saw the loss of 350 jobs that are not likely to return.

2. New Growth
Lee needs to build on recent development on the east side of Main Street, and develop the West Side.

3. Operating costs.
Health insurance is up by 10.6% and takes up 16% of the town-operating budget. Energy costs amount to 1/2 million per year. There is an opportunity for savings by consolidating management among Lee, Lenox, and Stockbridge and by developing wind power.

4. Infrastructure
There are 16 bridges in Lee. It will take 1 million to de-lead and paint two of them. Water tower in South Lee needs painting. Old water mains need upgrading.

Summary:
The challenge is to save on operating costs and invest in infrastructure without raising taxes.

When asked after the meeting how Tri-Town Rotary might be of service in Lee, Bob thought of the youth soccer teams. He will give more thought to this and other needs.

Guest speakers were Webster Beall and Ernesto Martinez from Camp Hill Village, Copake, NY. Camp Hil is an international organization started in Scotland just after World War II. Camp Hill Village in Copake, NY was started in 1961 to help mentally challenged people. The village is organized and operated on a community basis with all the clients/residents performing meaningful jobs. There are currently 97 residents residing in 24 cottages at the 200 acre Copake property. The admittance ages range, primarily between 21 – 40 and once admitted can stay through out their lifetime.
Ernesto, a resident, described some of the activities he is involved in such as farming, gardening and art. He vividly described his interest in charcoal shadows and color. Webster, a volunteer and director, discussed Camp Hill Village philosophy and described some of their programs.

All Tri-Town Rotarians are invited to visit their Copake facility, which has a café and would be able to host our weekly meeting.

The Rotary Foundation has provided a matching grant for Tri-Town’s project to help get educational supplies for children impacted by the tsunami in Japan. Specifically our funds in partnership with a Japanese Rotary will purchase radiation detectors for students to wear.

In granting approval the rotary Foundation wrote about the Tri-Town Rotary Grant: ” It is very impressive that both of your clubs submitted complete information within 4 months of the devastating earthquake and subsequent Tsunami, and are receiving the funds available with this account.

The Rotary Foundation (TRF) applauds your quick action and desire to assist those in need”
