I decided that this week would be a recovery week, since we would be moving. I never would have thought that moving would beat me up more than triathlon training, but it sure did. I really need a couple of days to recover from that weekend of moving..oh man.

Since we had three kids it has become pretty clear that our little 2 bedroom wasn’t going to cut it anymore. We got lucky enough to find a 3 bedroom roughly 4 miles from where we live. Since our lease was up in February we decided to JUMP on it. It my head, moving all our stuff would be easy. Its only 4 miles down the road, hard much work could it be? Lucky for me I had some friends that where more than willing to help with the move. We started Friday night and from 5pm-10 pm we managed to move ALL our big items minus the fridge, living room TV, and our bed. I then got up at 4am on Saturday and was back at it, never realized how much CRAP we have and moving with 3 kids all under the age of 8 is a nightmare. My wife tried her best to clean while attending the needs of the kids, but it was rough to say the least.

As of Saturday at around 3:30pm we managed to get EVERYTHING moved; now we are stuck with the un-pleasant task of unpacking everything. I missed my Monday morning but managed to hit my lunch time weight routine. Hopefully my training will be back on schedule now.

Week of 2.11.13 to 2.16.13 - Sleep with new Baby??

Running – 20.77 miles (3hrs 8m)
Cycling – 29.46 miles (1 hour 40m)
Swimming – 1094 yards(25m)
Weight Training - 1 hour

Trying to get back into the routine since baby Carter was born on 02.02.13. So far it hasn’t affected training too bad, he has been pretty much the perfect baby so far, only crying when he is hungry or dirty. We were hoping to get a easy baby haha..so far so good. My weekend training has defiantly been much earlier than previously, but I am sure once everything settles down then I can make adjustments.

My wife and I both know that getting enough rest is important when having such a busy schedule. Two weeks into the new born, this is currently how we do night time. At 7:30 my wife will breast feed baby Carter until he falls asleep and then she moves to the living room basinet. At 8:00 my wife takes our 2 year old Brooklynn into our bed and lays with her until she falls asleep, at the same time I take our 7 year old Kyle to his bed and read to him while keeping an ear out for Baby Carter out in the living room. Once I read to my son, I tuck him in and head back out to the living room to keep a better eye on baby Carter. Once my wife gets Brooklynn to sleep, she will then come out to the living room with me for some relax time. She will stay out there with baby Carter and sleep on the recliner while I head to bed to lay with Brooklynn. This will last until around 1 am when my son gets up and heads to our bed, he then wakes me up and I make room for him. Roughly an hour later my daughter will wake up and head out to the living room to wake up my wife and ask for something to drink. My wife will then get her a drink and move baby carter to the basinet in our room, wake and kick me out of bed, then she lays down with the kids in our bed. I will then head out to the couch and sleep until 4am when my alarms goes off. I know this sounds crazy, but it is what is working right now.

Oh did I forget to mention we are also moving next weekend…ha..let the madness continue.

Below is a picture of Baby Carter with his Brother and Sister. :-)
My alarm went off at 3:00 am and I got out of bed and had a bowl of cereal and loaded up my fuel belt with GU gels. Once I got to the parking lot my only concern was to find a bathroom because I had to go. After parking I managed to find one and headed straight for it. I opened the door and realized that it is pitch black dark out. Using a porta potty in completed darkness is NOT an ideal situation and when I was done I heard a bonk and noticed that a couple of my GU gels fell into the crapper. ERRR not the way I wanted to start the day.

I originally signed up to run the full course and man I am glad I decided to run the 1/2 marathon. I ran the full marathon last year and really struggled finishing a little over 5 hours and in intense pain. My game plan entering the this run was to run hard and run fast and walk the aid stations. At the time this seemed like a good idea but once I was out on the run I didn't find any need to walk the aid stations. I haven't ran 13.1 miles in over a month and two weeks ago I was sick as a dog and spent 4 days laying in bed so I really had no idea what kind of pace I was looking to try and maintain. I wanted to start slow and go for a reverse split and pick it up towards the end. I was hoping to run the first 5k at a 9m pace and then slowly speed up from there.

At the starting line it was the typical June Gloom type weather, perfect for running's. I was in coral 12 and had to wait about 20-30 minutes before my coral was ready to rock. The countdown began from my coral and boom I was off, I jumped out fast trying to get a feel for how today was going to be. I only ran twice in the last 2 weeks and was concerned and really didn't know what to expect. My thought process was go out strong it's only 13.1 miles if I start to tire then I can just slow down. I hit the 5k mark at 27:20 at a 8:48 pace, I was pleased with my first 5k and I was hoping that I can keep my pace. My main goal for today's run was to completed it under 2 hours.

I started to run into heavy traffic and just wanted to get through the crowd without them slowing me down to back because I was still trucking and well under my 2 hr goal. I hit the 10k split at 54:32 and was feeling pretty confident. It was around this point that I knew that I was going to be just fine, just keep at this pace until the end and then turn up the heat. Running down the 163 is a trip, I am usually traveling 75 mph on it but today I am running on it. I passed these guys dressed up as Elvis and jamming out to their radio. It was great, oh did I mention each of them was drinking a Miller light..ha-ha that is the way to run.

I hit the 10 mile mark at 1hours and 27 minutes and knew I only had a 5k to go and it was time to give it a little extra. The course started to narrow but I knew it was my time and aimed for a 8 minutes pace the last 3.1 miles. Not only was I under a 8 minute mile the last 3.1 miles but I felt GREAT!!. I managed to pass a grip of runners near the finish line and crossed the line at 1 hour 52 minutes and 52 seconds, a good 7 minutes under my 2 hour goal. This was my first race at this distance and I really felt strong. I managed to finish 2002 out of 17,568 runners and 252 out of 1073 runners in my age group.
And man do I have my work cut out for me for future races. I dropped my 2 year old off that morning at my brothers so my wife would have a little easier time only having to worry about my 6 year old son. My son Kyle was more nervous than I was about swimming in the ocean, he was sure a shark was going to get me.

Ha-ha we got to mission beach right when the parking lot and transition area opened up I was one of the first to my wave section and was able to set up nicly my area. I managed to get an end spot, i figured it would give me more room and for my first triathlon my transitions went fairly good.

My training for the swim leading to the event was 300-400m workouts but not at the same time and in a controlled setting of the swimming pool. When I first checked out the swimming course I thought to myself, I got this it looked super easy and I was sure that I could at least finish in the middle of the pack, my biggest fear was finishing last in the swim or having to be rescued because I bit off more than I can handle. When I first dipped my toes into the bay I was surprisingly happy with the water temperature, I was surprised that it was fairly warm. My entire age group was treading water and I was looking around and sizing up the competition, I knew I was going to get smoked on the swim but was pretty confident in my cycling and running. When I looked to my right I was pleasantly surprised to see another dude out there with nose clips…Ha-ha. I don’t know what my problem was but I can’t swim with after my clips, my wife tells me just blow air out your nose..hmmm….That doesn’t work for me. The 3 minutes that we treaded water seemed like eternity with all my nerves on edge. When the alarm went off to go I tried to get into a groove and follow all the steps I used in practice but at about the 75 meter mark I panicked and pulled up and ripped my goggles off. I never swam in the ocean and I was out of breath and couldn’t see anything. I paddled over to the nice lady on the paddle board to catch my breath and she was all “this is your first race huh?” I’m like yup. She then asked if she wanted me to paddle me in, I said no even though I wanted to head back to land. I tried back stroking for a bit to help relax myself. This worked great until I noticed that I swam roughly 25 meters past the first buoy and was heading for land across the bay. I quickly made an adjustment and stayed on course, it was at this time the next wave started and it was pretty clear I was about 10 seconds from the last person in my wave. I continued to conserve my energy and continued to back stroke out until I was 50 meters away from the finish, I was beginning to get smoked by the women in the wave after me.

When I got out of the water I was completely out of breath and dizzy but I survived and headed to my strong sports cycling and running. When I was watching the first waves come in I was wondering why everyone is out of breath and not pulling their wetsuits down? Then it was my turn and I was slightly dizzy coming out of the water and I didn’t remember to pull my wet suit down until I was near the transition area. I was pleasantly surprised that my transitions went smooth. I ran my bike over and clipped in and was GONE! The course was 9.17 miles of a flat FAST course. This is where I made up a lot of time.

This is where I made up a lot of time. I put on some new aero-bars the night before and despite having some cramping in my calves I finished in 26 minutes flat, nearly a 22mph average. My transition into the run went fairly smooth again, I started my run off fairly slow since both my calves where cramping but once I was about a mile in the cramps left and I was able to put the hammer down.

With the fact I can’t swim for crap I was pretty pleased with my final results and can’t wait to do another sprint in July and a Olympic in September, I defiantly have my work cut out for me in regards to the swim.

Below is the GoPro video of the bike section of the race.

It feels good to slowly but surely get over this nasty cough that I had, it made it really rough to breath especially in the pool. Trying to keep at zone two for my run/bike rides, I have been noticing the quick recovery time due to staying at zone 2. My wo’s this week pretty much stayed on schedule without much of an issue, except for my Sunday bike ride.

My weeks totals where:

Bike: 2:08:38 35.65 miles

Run: 2:47:23 17.52 miles

Swim: 0:40:00 .27 miles

Str: 0:30:00

T: 6:06:02 53.44 miles

My Alarm went off Sunday at 4:30 am, I got up super early so I can get the car loaded up and head out to Del Mar. I wanted to ride up the coast for two hours, I figured since it was going to be in the 70’s during the day the morning shouldn’t be too cold. I planned on getting out there by 5:30 and going for a 2 hour ride and getting back as the kids where getting up. My wife has to deal with these bratty kids so I don’t like for her to be all alone during the weekend mornings. I left the house around 5:10 and made it about 5 miles before I remembered that I forgot my head light, so I headed home and picked it up. This already set me back around 20 min, so in my mind my ride just went from 2 hours to 1hr and 40 minutes. Not a big adjustment so I felt ok with it. When I got up near the 101 there wasn’t a car or cyclist in site, this is a cycling haven so in about an hour or two it’s going to be packed. I unloaded the car and geared up, I know it’s only in the 50’s but that’s COLD for me..haha. At about 5-7 miles into my ride I heard my tire making an odd sound, this is right before I’m heading down a decent. I decided to pull over and check the tire, sure enough its flat. UGGHH I just happened to hit a pretty dark patch of the ride, I did have my helmet light but it was pretty dark still. For some reason even though I was wearing gloves my hands were freaking COLD…It took me around 30 minutes to change the tire, which is ridiculous in its self. So back on the road, I ended up riding a few more miles and stopping at Solana beach took a picture and headed back to the car. I wanted a 2 hr ride but ended up with 45 minutes of actually riding.

Stupid Flat in the pitch dark..boo

<img src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiINPrO4OAIl8C-I-ezDvmqvDzoaUvS1IzlO6dgLpmJP_zSBMfO5QkjufgLBF7pdCnHqn_Olu_10U3vylSxGlXJagY3HicV_Rf1d3c_TrnbHr55l7ZXQOkO6fLSgUvFmX-u6IaWwMUOokU/s320/image005-718844.jpg" When I first started to contemplate if a triathlon was right for me I headed to the pool very confident that I could swim decent enough due to my high level of fitness. Well, that was NOT the case I swam about 100m and got out of the pool and told the guy getting into his lane..This is HARD! I knew then that picking up swimming is going to be harder then I originally thought. The sprint is only ¼ mile so I am pretty confident that I can transform myself into a somewhat decent enough swimmer to be able to hold my own in a ¼ swim.

Please follow me in my journey to my first Tri.
