Seriously, if you live in NYC, wouldn’t mind living with a friend I, and can pay your bills on time; let’s get talking! We’re cheap as fuck (we’re not looking to pay more than $750 for rent & utilities) and won’t move out of Brooklyn. Don’t worry, we both have jobs, are super neat. My buddy is amazing at baking and I am a neat freak so clean like nothing you’ve ever seen. The only thing you may not like about us is that we’re not planning on renewing our cable subscriptions - we’re fine with just Netflix & the internet.

I've been listening to this song, almost non-stop, ever since it came out. Robyn is one of my favourite artists, I love the amount of energy and intimacy she puts into every song, as well as her live performances. It's all so infectious. Great catchy melodies and rhythms, but still different to all the other radio friendly pop that's going around.

Ghana has advanced to the quarterfinals after defeating the US 2-1, but I'm sure you know that by now. It was a beautiful game that went into extra time, a total of around 120mins. Ghana played splendidly with Kevin-Prince Boateng scoring Ghana's first goal within the first 5 minutes of the game. Despite a penalty kick scored by the USA's Dempsey, Ghana was not finished. A BEAUTIFUL goal was scored in extra time by Ghana's Gyan, as two US defenders tried to tackle him, but struggled to comprehend the complexity of his skills. Despite many attempts at goal, the US could just not penetrate the Ghanaian defenders nor the brilliant saves provided by Kingson, Ghana's goalkeeper.

Next up, Ghana will play a tough South American opponent, Uruguay.

Marina Abramovic blows my fucking mind. Plain and simple. I'd love to say I came across her through some enlightened feat of artistic discovery, and make the next few sentences sound as romantic enough to make both puke and smile at the same time, but actually, I came across her work by accident. A few weeks ago, I took my younger sister to the Museum of Modern Art to get a peek at Tim Burton's exhibition there. I wasn't as impressed by his work as I'd hoped to be and actually, it what actually caught my wondering eye was the simple and somewhat perplexing scene of performance art that was taking place in the central area of the museum. In a wide, open, rectangular space sat a pale woman with raven her, cloaked in what looked like a fitted red snuggie robe, on a sturdy wooden chair staring blankly at the emotionless individual seated opposite her - both motionless. This installment was part of a larger exhibition titled, "The Artist is Present", and it was exactly that as well as the contrary. Whilst she was present in the physical, her mind seemed anywhere but. Thus began my love affair with this Serbian-Yugoslavian artist who call herself, "The Grandmother of Performance Art".

I brush my hair with a metal brush held in my right hand and simultaneously comb my hair with a metal comb held in my left hand. While so doing, I continuously repeat 'Art must be beautiful', 'Artist must be beautiful', until I have destroyed my hair and face.

Despite the worrying cover artwork on their latest offering, Grey Oceans, I can't stop listening listening to this hauntingly beautiful and delicate song. The tenderness of lyrics and the lullaby-like melody just make a stellar combination. The album is due out early next week in the US and though not as great as Noah's Ark - my personal favourite - it is still worth exploring. That reminds me, I need to buy my ticket for their show in NYC next month.You can here a brilliant live version of the song here.

Ever since I first laid eyes on this collection, I couldn't take my eyes off it, and have been meaning to do a blog post on it ever since. It's always exciting when a regular blogger unleashes their creative side for the world to see, especially when their work is as impressive as this. Featuring simple but versatile designs, blogger, Anka Cookie, recently unveiled her latest designs for her Spring 2010 collection, for her label titled "ANNA R-K", and I was immediately blown away by it. From the long and drapey silhouettes of her blue maxi dress and black waterfall-esque jacket, to the pale hues of her sultry body-con dress and slim-fit sweatpants, there isn't a garment presented that I'm not lusting for. Although I must admit, the jacket and maxi dress are my favourite items from her collection. Whilst sitting at my internship desk this morning, I noticed an influx of updates from several music blogs and websites I'm subscribed to. The topic of the day: M.I.A's 9-minute video for her new single, "Born Free", directed by Roman Garvras. Garvras has directed other conceptually raw music videos such as, Justice's "Stress" and Simian Mobile Disco's, "I Believe". The highly graphic short centers around issues of racial profiling and violent discrimination, and additionally raises questions surrounding war, genocide and immigration. After being blown away by a the brilliant execution of a controversial but powerful subject-matter, I started drawing mental comparisons to various other adverts and films I'd seen in the past. The latter part of the music video's visual style reminded me of a pseudo-documentary I stumbled across a few years back called, "Punishment Park" - another must see, as well as a South African advert that turns the tables on life as we know it (at least in South Africa).

As a warning, if you are a highly sensitive viewer or have a young'un by your side, I'd suggest stopping here. For those of you who can stomach highly graphic violent scenes and full-on nudity, press play at your own discretion.

South African Advert:

Although the cold season has come to an end, I can't help but covet this all black, fur-lined (hopefully faux), side-draped, hooded cape by Hartmann Nordenholz - a name that forms as the title for the label by Filip Fiska and Agnes Schorer. The garment is part of the label's Fall 2010-11 collection titled, "Musterung", which, if I'm not mistaken, means 'pattern'. The above is one of their one a of the few pieces in his collection that is a solid colour, as several of their other garments share various linear and colour-block hues ranging from sea foam green and heather grey, to pale blue and peachy pink. It all sounds rather misguided, but the Nordenholz team has an orderly way of stringing these contrasting mixes together - as is highly evident in most of their past collections.

Can't wait to finally get a copy of this magazine. It's always exciting to visually follow the progress of something new and refreshing, and to await its arrival. From reading her blog, one can see that Oroma has put her blood, sweat and tears into the realization of this bounded work of art, which has been fueled wholeheartedly by a wealth of passion and creativity. Along with magazines like Ghubar and Arise, it's such a relief to see the void on creativity in Africa, and within the black community, being filled.

Naturally, anything that challenges the very notion of gender as defined both by society and popular culture is sure to catch my eye. New York based photographer Crystal Gywn recently published a series of black and white photographs - in the form of a photographic essay - that captures the aesthetic of gender bending females and their androgynous side. Using the description; "Girls who like girls who like girls who look like boys", casual as they seem, all of her subjects challenge the very notion of femininity in society - with their simple but slightly rough around the edges take on male attire and style in general.

Although I'm not completely sure of her overall objective, Gwyn could have taken this visual essay to another level by including girls from all backgrounds, who posses this similar trait, as a way of showcasing the true diversity of femme culture.

Islands.

The new video for The xx's catchy and slightly upbeat single, Islands, has made its web debut today courtesty of MTVU. It features an all black set, with the band seated on a sofa in the middle of four dancers, executing a choreographed number. At first, it all seems rather repetitive until you realize the minute subtle changes that happen over the course of the song. Sort of like a video version of those "spot the difference" picture puzzles.

While we're on the subject of The xx, I'm overly ecstatic today as I'll be seeing them open for another great band - Hot Chip - at their Terminal 5 show tomorrow. I predict an epic night.

No big story behind the change, was just getting tired of the former name. Please update your links, for those of you that care to keep following. Haven't been posting a lot recently due to the demands of school work, other activities and my internship at a music label. All that'll change over the next few weeks, once I decide on the direction of this blog. Style and fashion seems to have taken the forefront as topics featured on this blog, despite my initial intentions to document music: concerts, releases and general interests, as well as tid-bits about my own life. The latter was extremely hard to include on this blog, as I am an extremely camera shy person. Well, enough of my ramblings. Stay tuned, folks and bear with me!
