Crime Scene - Body found in San Gabriel River near South El Monte

SOUTH EL MONTE >> Detectives are investigating the discovery of a body in the San Gabriel River just outside of South El Monte, authorities said.
Few details were available regarding the discovery, which occurred about 1:10 p.m. in the water near Thienes Avenue, Los Angeles County sheriff’s Lt. David Infante said.
No description of the person was immediately available, nor were the circumstances of the death, as the investigation remained in its early stages.

Robledo on preps - South Hills volleyball ready to step it up

The South Hills High School girls volleyball team has made a dramatic change.

The Huskies have not had a winning record or been to the CIF-Southern Section playoffs since 2011. Last year, South Hills went 6-24 and 1-9 in the inaugural Palomares League season.

How things have changed.

The Huskies are 7-3 and coming off a second-place finish in the Whittier tournament heading into Wednesday evening’s league opener against visiting Ayala.

Crime Scene - Big rig crash snarls eastbound 60 Freeway in Hacienda Heights

HACIENDA HEIGHTS >> An overturned big rig prompted the closure of all but one lane of the eastbound 60 Freeway Wednesday evening, officials said.
The 9:08 p.m. crash on the eastbound 60 Freeway, just west of Azusa Avenue, involved only one big rig and resulted in no injuries, but snarled traffic as the overturned truck blocked the three right-hand lanes, according to California Highway Patrol logs.
A Sig Alert was issued for an unknown duration.

Beer Goggles - Great American Beer Fest 2015: Local breweries take home 24 medals

Greater Los Angeles area breweries can pat themselves on the back.

They’ve claimed 24 of the 282 awards given out at this year’s Great American Beer Festival, which took place Thursday through Saturday of last week.

The winners were chosen from 6,647 entries from 1,552 breweries.

A total of 15 breweries, large and small, from the Santa Barbara area through the Inland Empire were awarded.

Beer Goggles - SoCal Great American Beer Festival 2015 Winners: Smog City in Torrance and...

Both breweries won silver medals at the 27th annual Great American Beer Festival in Denver with Smog picking up an honor for its Kumquat Saison in the Belgian-style Fruit Beer category and Beachwood for its Mocha Machine, a 9.2 percent ABV Porter.

The GABF medal was old hat for Beachwood BBQ, which has won 10 medals since 2012, but this was only Smog’s second in its young existence.

Incidentally, you can taste the saison for yourself Saturday when Smog releases it in limited bottles and on draft at its Del Amo Boulevard tasting room.

Inside Boxing - Deontay Wilder stops Duhaupas in 11th, Dominic Breazeale wins decision

Deontay Wilder on Saturday evening defended his heavyweight world title for the second time by stopping Johann Duhaupas of France in the 11th round at Legacy Arena in Birmingham, Ala. The bout was stopped by referee Jack Reiss at 55 seconds.

Wilder, of Tuscaloosa, Ala., made his first defense in Birmingham as well, when he knocked out Eric Molina in the ninth round in June at Bartow Arena.

Wilder is now 35-0 with 34 knockouts. The only fighter he hasn’t knocked out as a pro is Bermane Stiverne, from whom Wilder took the title with a unanimous decision in January in Las Vegas.

Wilder was winning by scores of 100-90, 99-91 and 99-91 at the time of the stoppage. There was heavy swelling under Wilder’s left eye, but he dominated and really beat up Duhaupas.

Also on the NBC-televised card, heavyweight prospect Dominic Breazeale of Alhambra is now 16-0 after winning a 10-round unanimous decision over Fred Kassi in the semi-main event. Breazeale, a 2012 U.S. Olympian, won by scores of 98-92, 97-93 and 100-90.
