1. What do the initials spell? One reason why National Skyway Freight changed its name to Flying Tigers is that “NSF” is a well-known abbreviation for “not sufficient funds.” Likewise, you wouldn’t want to discover after you’d already invested in and promoted your name that disgruntled customers were calling Condo Renovators United of Detroit, your company, “CRUD.”

2. Does the name resemble or evoke a disreputable word? Marketers coined the name Allegis as an umbrella name for United Airlines, Hertz, Hilton and Westin Hotels. However, many people who looked at the first five letters thought about “allegedly” and “allegations” rather than “allegiance.” That, together with the challenge of pronouncing it, led the corporation to abandon its $7.5 million investment in the name and go back to its previous name, UAL Corporation. Something similar happened to Allegheny Airlines, which got tagged with the nickname Agony Airlines until it renamed itself USAir.

3. Do the letters or anything about the way the name is spelled suggest anything negative? When Standard Oil of New Jersey morphed into Esso (S.O.), then came in for criticism under the name Exxon, commentators sometimes latched onto the double “X” and called it the Double Cross Company. Likewise, you might find it cute to call your cafe that’s at the corner of Sixth Avenue and Route 66 “Cafe 666,” but many people associate the number 666 with the devil, so this would be certain to generate notoriety – negative publicity.

4. Does the name suggest a catchy parody version? You can’t prevent this kind of lampooning entirely, but you also don’t want to make it easy for the public to make fun of you. The natural foods supermarket chain Whole Foods is often derisively called Whole Paycheck by those who find its prices high, and the elite department store Neiman Marcus has been dubbed Needless Markup. People who do not like the food at Applebees, a casual restaurant chain, call it Crapplebees. Be forewarned about this move by asking your comedian friends how they’d twist your proposed name in a satire.

5. Does the name shorten into something you’d be embarrassed about? In New York City, the neighborhood South of Houston Street became known as “SoHo.” Washington Mutual, a bank, similarly let its name get shortened into “WaMu.” However, if your company was named California Carriers, you would most definitely not want to be known as “CaCa.”

Make sure these techniques don’t turn you into a humor target! Be wise about selecting a name that is easier to keep reputable.

The strong numbers reported Monday by the housing industry were greeted with enthusiasm by the stock market in the opening hours of trading.

Sales of existing homes in October recorded the highest level in several years with a 10.1% increase for the month.

Certainly, the $8,000 tax credit for first time homebuyers played a strong role in pushing the numbers up.

The credit was due to expire at the end of November, but has been extended to April of 2010 and expanded.

This mini-bubble, if you will, in sales is not likely to be repeated until the new deadline for the tax credit looms next year.

However, it was good news, even if distorted by the tax credit deadline.

Does this answer the concern that banks aren't lending enough?

Are stimulus dollars finally making their way out of bank vaults and into mortgages?

We'll have to wait for further analysis of the data to get those answers.

With the public, government and press focused on the short-term, any confidence boosting is welcome in the economy.

However, the long-term health of the economy and ultimately the stock market is tied to reducing the number of unemployed.

We cannot legitimately claim the economy is on the mend until it is strong enough to begin creating jobs.

Until then, gains in the stock market aren't likely to stem the tide of foreclosures or further worsening of the jobless situation.

By this measure, we still have a long, hard road in front of us.

Roadshow in East Java As Part of the 32nd Anniversary of The Indonesian Capital Market Reactivation (1977-2009)

Surabaya – To celebrate the 32nd Anniversary of Indonesian Capital Market reactivation, the Indonesian capital market regulator and SROs, which consists of the Indonesian Capital Market and Financial Institutions Supervisory Agency (Bapepam-LK), the Indonesia Stock Exchange (IDX), the Indonesian Clearing and Guarantee Corporation (KPEI), and the Indonesian Central Securities Depository (KSEI), organize roadshows to widely introduce capital market to the society and at the same time perform corporate social responsibility (CSR). One of the destinations of these roadshows is East Java.

As a form of their concern for the development in education, the series of activities in East Java will be opened with Campus to Campus at the Ciputra University Surabaya. This activity aims to introduce and increase the academics’ knowledge on Capital Market.

The next agenda of the event is the inauguration of Capital Market Information Center (PIPM) in Surabaya as the representative of IDX in the city. PIPM Surabaya, which was once known as the Information and Education Center, has move to its new residence in Jl. Basuki Rahmat No. 46 Surabaya 60261. The new office will be symbolically inaugurated by the Governor of East Java, Dr. H. Soekarwo, accompanied by the Head of Accounting Standards and Disclosure Bureau of Bapepam-LK, Mr. Anis Baridwan and the President Director of Indonesia Stock Exchange, Mr. Ito Warsito.

IDX is optimist that the new PIPM in Surabaya can promote the Capital Market as an investment alternative and first choice for funding to the locals, and at the same time will bring the IDX closer to the existing and prospective market participants in the city. PIPM Surabaya will assist to gather and attract local companies to turn to IDX as a source of funding for the companies’ development in the region.

Besides in Surabaya, IDX has also opened PIPMs in several other cities such as Riau, Balikpapan, Manado, Makassar, Pekalongan, Padang, Jember, Pontianak, Yogyakarta, Cirebon, and Lampung.

Another activity going to be held on this commemoration of the Anniversary of Indonesia Capital Market Reactivation is a Prospective Investor Forum entitled Smart Investing in Capital Market. The purpose of this forum is to introduce Capital Market as an investment alternative for the people in Surabaya and its surrounding areas. The forum will present competent speakers, which will include the President Director of IDX, Mr. Ito Warsito; Director of IDX, Ms. Friderica Widyasari Dewi; and the President Director of KSEI, Mr. Ananta Wiyogo. This forum will also be attended by the Mayor of Surabaya, Mr. Drs. Bambang Dwi Hartono, M.Pd., and will be held at the Ballroom of Sheraton Hotel Surabaya on November 24, 2009.

As a form of concern and solidarity, Bapepam-LK, IDX, KPEI and KSEI has also rebuilt a primary school SDN Batokan V Kasiman in Bojonegoro, which was heavily ruined by Bengawan Solo flood a few years ago. The rebuilding of this school is expected to give positive impacts on other efforts made for public facilities development after the flood, especially for the learning facilities in the region. Most CSR programs perform by the capital market communities are focused on the education world. This is based on the belief that education is the most important factor for the development of the younger generation as the next leaders of the nation. Therefore, on November 25, 2009, as part of the activities in the roadshow, there will be a signing of a commemorative plague on the inauguration of the newly built primary school SDN Batokan V Kasiman Bojonegoro by the Regent of Bojonegoro, Mr. Drs. H. Suyoto, MSi., and the handing over of the school by the President Director of IDX, Mr. Ito Warsito, to the Principal of the school, Mrs. Sarmini, S.Pd., which will also be witnessed by the Regent of Bojonegoro. On the occasion, some students of SDN Batokan V Kasiman with high achievements and who are coming from less fortunate families will be granted scholarships.

The roadshow in East Java hopefully can attract more Indonesian investors, which at the end will help to develop the capital market in Indonesia.

Share (stock) is one of the most popular financial instruments. Issuing stock is one of the choices for company’s funding. Moreover, stock is investors' most favourite investment instrument because it offers them an interesting return rate.

Stock can be defined as a sign of capital participation of an individual or institution in a company or corporation. By investing in a company, the party has the claim for the company’s income, assets, and right to attend the General Meeting of Shareholders.

Basically, there are two benefits the investor can get by buying or having stock:

1.Dividend
Dividend is profit sharing given by company and comes from the income. Dividend is given after getting the agreement from shareholders in the General Meeting. If an investor wants to receive dividend, he/she must own the stock for a relatively long period, until the ownership term is in the period where he/she is acknowledged as the shareholder who has the right to obtain the dividend.
2.Capital Gain
Capital gain is the different between buying price and selling price. Capital gain is obtained through the trading activities carried out in the secondary market. For example, an investor buys ABC’s shares at Rp 3,000 per share and then sells it at Rp 3,500 per share. It means the investor gets capital gain of Rp 500 for every sold share.

As investment instrument, stock has risks:

1.Capital Loss
It is the reverse of Capital Gain. It is a condition when the investor sells his/her shares at lower price than its buying price. For instance, PT XYZ’s shares are bought at Rp 2,000 per share, but aftermath the stock price experiences decrease to the level of Rp 1,400 per share. Afraid of continuous declines, the investor sells the shares at price of Rp 1.400. The investor has retain a capital loss of Rp 600 per share.
2.Liquidity Risk
A company, whose shares are owned by public, is stated for bankruptcy by the Court or is being dismissed. In this case, the claiming rights of shareholders get the last priority after all the company’s liabilities are settled (by gathering the fund from selling the company’s assets). If there is an amount of rest of the company’s wealth, it will be shared proportionally to the shareholders. But, if there is no rest left, the shareholders will not receive anything out of the liquidation. This is the worst condition that might happen to shareholders. For that reason, a shareholder needs to observe every development in the company, which shares are owned.
In secondary market or daily shares trading activities, stock prices fluctuate, either increase or decrease. Prices are formed from the demand and supply of the stock. In other words, prices are formed by supply and demand. Supply and demand are influenced by many factors, either by specific factors such as the company and industry’s performance where the stocks exist or macro factors such as the interest rate, inflation, currency rate, and non-economical factors like social and political conditions, and so on
