WHAT IS A COMPUTER VIRUS ?

THE VIRUS EITHER COPIES THE MASTER BOOT PROGRAM TO ANOTHER PART OF THE HARD DISK OR OVERWRITES IT. THEY INFECT A COMPUTER WHEN IT BOOTS UP OR WHEN IT ACCESSES THE INFECTED FLOPPY DISK IN THE FLOPPY DRIVE. I.E. ONCE A SYSTEM IS INFECTED WITH A BOOT-SECTOR VIRUS, ANY NON-WRITE-PROTECTED DISK ACCESSED BY THIS SYSTEM WILL BECOME INFECTED.

EXAMPLES OF BOOT- SECTOR VIRUSES ARE MICHELANGELO AND STONED.

2) FILE OR PROGRAM VIRUSES :-

SOME FILES/PROGRAMS, WHEN EXECUTED, LOAD THE VIRUS IN THE MEMORY AND PERFORM PREDEFINED FUNCTIONS TO INFECT THE SYSTEM. THEY INFECT PROGRAM FILES WITH EXTENSIONS LIKE .EXE, .COM, .BIN, .DRV AND .SYS .

SOME COMMON FILE VIRUSES ARE SUNDAY, CASCADE.

3) MULTIPARTITE VIRUSES :-

A MULTIPARTITE VIRUS IS A COMPUTER VIRUS THAT INFECTS MULTIPLE DIFFERENT TARGET PLATFORMS, AND REMAINS RECURSIVELY INFECTIVE IN EACH TARGET. IT ATTEMPTS TO ATTACK BOTH THE BOOT SECTOR AND THE EXECUTABLE, OR PROGRAMS, FILES AT THE SAME TIME. WHEN THE VIRUS ATTACHES TO THE BOOT SECTOR, IT WILL IN TURN AFFECT THE SYSTEM’S FILES, AND WHEN THE VIRUS ATTACHES TO THE FILES, IT WILL IN TURN INFECT THE BOOT SECTOR.

This type of virus can re-infect a system over and over again if all parts of the virus are not eradicated.

Ghostball was the first multipartite virus, discovered by Fridrik Skulason in October 1989. Other examples are Invader, Flip, etc.

4) STEALTH VIRUSES :-

THESE VIRUSES ARE STEALTHY IN NATURE MEANS IT USES VARIOUS METHODS FOR HIDING THEMSELVES TO AVOID DETECTION. THEY SOMETIMES REMOVE THEMSELVES FROM THE MEMORY TEMPORARILY TO AVOID DETECTION BY ANTIVIRUS. THEY ARE SOMEWHAT DIFFICULT TO DETECT. WHEN AN ANTIVIRUS PROGRAM TRIES TO DETECT THE VIRUS, THE STEALTH VIRUS FEEDS THE ANTIVIRUS PROGRAM A CLEAN IMAGE OF THE FILE OR BOOT SECTOR.

5) POLYMORPHIC VIRUSES :-

POLYMORPHIC VIRUSES HAVE THE ABILITY TO MUTATE IMPLYING THAT THEY CHANGE THE VIRAL CODE KNOWN AS THE SIGNATURE EACH TIME THEY SPREAD OR INFECT. THUS AN ANTIVIRUS PROGRAM WHICH IS SCANNING FOR SPECIFIC VIRUS CODES UNABLE TO DETECT IT’S PRESENCE.

6) MACRO VIRUSES :-

A MACRO VIRUS IS A COMPUTER VIRUS THAT “INFECTS” A MICROSOFT WORD OR SIMILAR APPLICATION AND CAUSES A SEQUENCE OF ACTIONS TO BE PERFORMED AUTOMATICALLY WHEN THE APPLICATION IS STARTED OR SOMETHING ELSE TRIGGERS IT. MACRO VIRUSES TEND TO BE SURPRISING BUT RELATIVELY HARMLESS.A MACRO VIRUS IS OFTEN SPREAD AS AN E-MAIL VIRUS. WELL-KNOWN EXAMPLES ARE CONCEPT VIRUS AND MELISSA WORM

WAYS HACKERS SEND YOU SERVER,VIRUSES AND .EXE FILES VIA INTERNET:

1. Binder -

Binder is a software which is used to bind or collaborate the server or virus you have created with some other file like a MP3,JPEG or any other file.You can fool the victim by sending him a song or picture and as soon as he opens the picture or song the Binder also gets open and starts working.

2. Crypter -

A crypter is a tool which changes the binary code of the .exe (virus,RAT etc.)file and applies many encryptions on it which makes the .exe file undetectable.You can use Chrome Crypter.

3. Zipping -

Another smart way to send files is by putting your server in a Zipped folder and then sending it to the victim.Zipping the file changes the extension of the server from .exe to .zip,which bypasses the file transfer facility of gmail, facebook,yahoo etc..

USE WINRAR & Give password of that file, so AV's not enter in file.

4. Extension -

You can change the extension of the Server you want to send as it is not possible to send .exe files,so you can change the extension of .exe to .jpeg,.mp3 etc. when you save the file and then send it to the victim.But in this method you will have to tell the victim to change the extension back to .exe after he receives the server.This method can only be used in cases where the victim is very dumb and has no knowledge of this field.

A person who is not much interested in cyber security should have knowledge of above mentioned methods as they can be used against anyone.

US company to beam free wi-fi to entire world from space

Washington: A US company is planning to build an 'Outernet - a global network of cube satellites broadcasting Internet data to all the people on the planet - for free.

The idea is to offer free Internet access to all people, regardless of location, bypassing filtering or other means of censorship, according to the New York based non-profit organisation, Media Development Investment Fund (MDIF).

MDIF proposes that hundreds of cube satellites be built and launched to create a constellation of sorts in the sky, allowing anyone with a phone or computer to access Internet data sent to the satellites by several hundred ground stations.

The organisation claims that 40 per cent of the people in the world today are still not able to connect to the Internet.

The Outernet would be one-way - data would flow from feeders to the satellites which would broadcast to all below. MDIF plans to add the ability to transmit from anywhere as well as soon as funds become available.

MDIF has acknowledged that building such a network would not be cheap. Such satellites typically run USD 100,000 to USD 300,000 to build and launch.

The timeline for the project calls for deploying the initial cubesats as early as next summer.

Search engines are always helping out blogs and websites to direct people if they are interested in content published. Being indexed by search engines matters that way as it will be another traffic source for your blog or website. However to be indexed, search engine bots or crawlers need wants to know your site is live and updating. Once you publish new content, search engines may not index them right away. It may take some time unless you have blocked search engines from crawling your pages. Search engines crawl and update their search index with latest updates of sites periodically. But what if you wanna let know search engines about your site or content changes and let them indexed more quickly?

If you find that search engines taking more time to crawl your pages after publishing or modifying content on it, there are two possible methodologies to notify search engines about changes done on your website.

Submission of URL

You can submit the web address or URL of your site or specific page to search engines to notify that they needs to be crawled as soon as possible due to fresh content or content changes. You don't need to submit each and every page here unless it's a specific consideration. Just the top-level page will be enough for search engines to visit and crawl for changes. But submission of top-level URL may not guarantee that it will crawl all of your pages on blog or website. So be specific, if you need to.

Submission of XML Sitemap

Sitemap is a page where visitors can navigate through pages which resembles site structure, if they were unable to find a particular page on your blog or website they intended to. It helps them to navigate easily. But an XML Sitemap is a XML file which has list of URLs of your pages on the blog or website. It doesn't help users to navigate easily, but search engines value it mostly. Submitting XML sitemap help search engines to find what are the pages available on your site and crawl all of pages without missing any of them. Submission of an XML sitemap can guarantee that your pages are queued to be indexed in search index of search engines. So it is far more effective than submission of URLs, we discussed above.

First off you need to create an XML sitemap before you submit it to search engines. Let's see how to generate an XML sitemap for your blog or website and submit to popular search engines.

i. Generate a sitemap of your blog or website using a XML sitemap generator such as XML-Sitemaps.

Note: Free sitemap generators may have limitations.

ii. Now right click on generated XML sitemap link or download link, and copy link address of the XML sitemap file.

iii. Submit your XML sitemap to search engines, appending URL of your XML sitemap in each URL. Just append sitemap URL and copy whole URL onto browser address bar. Then hit Enter or click go button.

Do you know, you can share your Google data even after your death? Yes, now it is possible with an exciting feature provided by Google. Google always comes with the exciting features and this is one of them. You can share your data with anyone you want after your death.

Here are the few steps through which your data can be transferred if your account has not been accessed for a particular period of time.

Log in to your Gmail account. Go to your account settings. At the end of the page, in theaccount management there will be an option “Learn more and go to setup”. Click on that. Then on the next page click on setup. Then at the option “Notify contacts and share data”click on “Add trusted contact”. In this you can add up to 10 contacts. It asks you either enter the email address or the name of the persons with whom you would like to share your data. Enter the email or name of the person who you think can be trusted to share data with.

Click on next. Then it asks you what you would like to share. It gives you the following options:
Contacts, Drive, Hangouts, Mail, Picasa Web Albums, Reader, YouTube. You can also select all of them. On the same page it asks you to enter the mobile number. A verification code will be sent to that number after your account becomes inactive. That code will be required to access your data after your account becomes inactive. So, enter the mobile number of the person whose name or email id you provided earlier.
Then, it will ask you to add a message along with the subject. This message will be sent to the person whom you would like to share your data. This message will be sent after your account becomes inactive. After adding the message click on save.
Then you can select the time you would like your account to be inactive after your last signing out. You have to select an option out of 3 months, 6 months, 9 months, 12 months, 15 months and 18 months. By default it is set to 3 months. It will ask you to provide a contact number on which an alert will be sent before performing any action on your account. It will also give an option that whether you would like your account to be deleted after becoming inactive. You can specify that also. Then finally click on enable.

Once you enabled it don’t forget to access it for the time duration you entered your account to be inactive within, if not accessed.

1) Let us suppose a computer Lab A in a school containing 20 computers all connected to each other using a switch and connected to a Modem[ all 20 to a single modem].
Then their *Private ip* address could be checked at cmd via point 4). This *Private ip* is mostly *STATIC* .
But their *Public ip* will be same as they are connected to internet via same route ie same modem. This *Public ip* will be assigned by the ISP and may or may not be *Dynamic*.

2) Let us take another computer lab B with same configuration as lab A. Now let us suppose computer xyz. It will definately have a different *Public Ip* as compared to Lab A, but it may or may not have same *Private ip* as that of any computer in Lab A.
There is one more thing, two devices could never have same Private ip connected to a same network. But two devices connected to different network may or may not have same Private ip.
This mean two computers either from lab A or B, both could have same *Public ip* but can never have same *Private ip*.

Example Explained :
Xyz computer From lab A:
Private ip : aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd [Generally STATIC]
Public Ip : xxx.yyy.zzz.www [Anything assigned by ISP, could be *DYNAMIC* or *STATIC* depending on your subscription]

abcd From Lab B
Private Ip : eee.fff.ggg.hhh [this could be same as Private IP of XYZ in Lab A, Generally STATIC]
Public Ip : qqq.eee.www.ttt [This could never be same as that of lab A, anything assigned by ISP, could be *DYNAMIC* or *STATIC* depending on your subscription]

The common type of phishing is Fake Login Page.

The victim is anyhow anyway made to enter his credentials in fake login page which resembles the genuine login page and gets hacked.

2.Malicious files- The victim is given a malicious file.

It could be binded with or hidden behind a genuine file.

It is usually a keylogger or trojan.

A keylogger secretly records everything you type and sends to attacker.

Obviously records your passwords too.

3.Stealing Sessions- Talking in simple language, whenever we sign into an account it generates a unique piece of string.

One copy is saved on server and other in our browser as cookie.

Both are matched everytime we do anything in our account.

This piece of string or login session is destroyed when we click on 'Sign Out' option. An attacker can steal that session by convincing victim to run a piece of code in browser. Attacker can use that stolen session to login into victim's account without providing any username/password. This attack is very uncommon because when the victim clicks 'Sign out', session gets destroyed and attacker too also gets signed out.

Note-You might be thinking that one could sniff the credentials sitting in same network.

But I should remind you that, they would be encrypted ones and cracking the SSL encryption is almost impossible.
