What is Proxy Server ?

It is a server that sits between a client application , such as a Web browser, and a real server for which client requested. Proxy server is a computer that offers a computer network service to allow clients to make indirect network connections to other network services. It intercepts all requests from client to the real server to see if it can fulfill the requests itself. If not, it forwards the request to the real server.In some cases, the proxy may alter the client's request or the server's response for various purposes.

Proxy servers have two main purposes:

Improve Performance: Proxy servers can improve performance for users. This is because it saves the results of all requests for a certain amount of time. Next time if same request comes, it serves from the saved pages rather than the real server.

Filter Requests: Proxy servers can also be used to filter requests. FOr Ex: a company might use a proxy server to prevent its employees from accessing a specific set of Web sites.

Types of proxy servers

You may see different types of proxy servers:

Transparent Proxy or Caching
This type of proxy server identifies itself as a proxy server and also makes the original IP address available through the http header. These are used for their ability to cache websites and do not effectively provide any anonymity to those who use them. However, the use of a transparent proxy will get you around simple IP bans. They are transparent in the terms that your IP address is exposed, not transparent in the terms that you do not know that you are using it.

Distorting Proxy
This type of proxy server identifies itself as a proxy server, but make an incorrect original IP address available through the http headers.

Anonymous Proxy
This type of proxy server identifies itself as a proxy server, but does not make the original IP address available. This type of proxy server is detectable, but provides reasonable anonymity for most users.

High Anonymity Proxy
This type of proxy server does not identify itself as a proxy server and does not make available the original IP address.

Reverse proxy
A reverse proxy is another common form of a proxy server and is generally used to pass requests from the Internet, through a firewall to isolated, private networks. It is used to prevent Internet clients from having direct, unmonitored access to sensitive data residing on content servers on an isolated network, or intranet. If caching is enabled, a reverse proxy can also lessen network traffic by serving cached information rather than passing all requests to actual content servers.

In general, people think that proxy servers are those which are used to hide our IP adress in order to be anonymous on the internet. But anonimity is only a use of proxy servers. Read the full post to know what actaully the Proxy Server is?

Proxy server: Proxy server is the server system which acts as the intermediate between client and server systems. When a client want to connect to a server using proxy, client's system first connect to the proxy server, and proxy then connect client's request with the server system. In this way, client have an indirect connection with the target server system. But proxy do not have only the work of connecting client and server. It provide various service at the network level to improve the connectivity and and performance. It is mainly used for performance improvements and packet filtering

Every proxy server have some set of rules and the requests of the clients are evaluates based on those set of rules. If your college has blocked the facebook, twitter, youtube and some other websites, it means the proxy server of your college do not have some set of rules which block the requests to these websites. So it filters all the packets which request for the connection with these websites.

Proxy server also perform caching service so it can also serve some request without contacting with the original server. Thus it can improve the performance.

How it Provide anonymity: As i have described above that Proxy server connects your system to the server indirectly. So the server knows only about the proxy not about you because you have no direct connection. Thus you are anonymous.

Advantages of Proxy servers: These are some advantages of the Proxy servers on the network.

· Proxy servers provide anonymity on the internet due to indirect connection between users and servers.
· It is used to scan the packets going outside and inside the networks. So it can used to determine the data leakage and data theft.
· Proxy servers can also be used to block some websites on the network.
· It can provide some features of Intrusion Detection system and Firewall
· Firewall can also logs data usage of each user on the internet.

Nikto is an open source web server scanner. Nikto is use to perform comprehensive tests against web servers for multiple items and vulnerable scripts, including over 6400 potentially dangerous files/CGIs, checks for outdated versions of over 1000 servers, and version specific problems on over 270 servers.

It also checks for server configuration items such as the presence of multiple index files, HTTP server options, and will attempt to identify installed web servers and software. Scan items and plugins are frequently updated and can be automatically updated.

Nikto is not designed as an overly stealthy tool. It will test a web server in the quickest time possible, and is fairly obvious in log files. However, there is support for LibWhisker's anti-IDS methods in case you want to give it a try (or test your IDS system). Not every check is a security problem, though most are. There are some items that are "info only" type checks that look for things that may not have a security flaw, but the webmaster or security engineer may not know are present on the server. These items are usually marked appropriately in the information printed. There are also some checks for unknown items which have been seen scanned for in log files.

How To Make Google Chrome Run Faster Again.. !

Google chrome is a freeware browser from Google which has around 25-28% of the market share. Have you noticed your usually speedy Google Chrome browser slowing down, or even crashing on you? Unnecessary plugins, extensions, and even browsing data can slow your browser down to a crawl, or make it crash. Here’s how to fix it.

Disable Plugins :-

By default, when you install Google Chrome, many unnecessary plugins are installed and enabled. Plugins help Chrome process special types of content, such as Flash, Java, Silverlight, or Windows Media files, but most of them aren’t even important to your daily browsing. Plugins can slow down the performance of Chrome, but you can disable plugins you are not using. To do this, type “about:plugins” (without the quotes) in the address bar of Chrome and press Enter.

NOTE: You can safely disable every single plugin, but you may want to keep Flash enabled, as a lot of sites use Flash to display menus, show videos, etc. Also, if you watch Netflix in Chrome(for US, UK and users in Europe), you need to keep the Silverlight plugin enabled. You can always enable a plugin again if you need to.

Disabled plugins turn gray in the list, and the Disable link for each disabled plugin becomes an Enable link, allowing you to enable the plugin again, if desired.

Disable Extensions :-

Extensions are small programs available in the Chrome Web Store that add extra features and functionality to Chrome. They can be very useful, but if you end up with a lot of extensions installed, the browser’s speed may be negatively affected. You can easily disable extensions without uninstalling them to gain some speed. Some extensions install a button on Chrome’s address bar, and those can be quickly disabled by right-clicking on them and choosing Uninstall from the menu.

You can also install apps in Chrome, that are accessible on the New Tab page. These can also be disabled.

To disable an extension, click the Enabled check box to the right of the extension’s title in the list so there is no check mark in the box.

You can also easily remove any extensions or apps you don’t want anymore by clicking the trash can icon to the right of the Enabled check box.

Notice that there are a lot less extensions on our toolbar now.

You can also clear a specific item from your browsing history, which can also make a slight difference when it comes to speed.

You can also remove a thumbnail from the New Tab page, by dragging it to the Remove from Chrome trash can, which only displays once you start dragging a thumbnail.

That’s it for now after following the above steps the chrome browser would get much snappier then before. You can also use tools like CCleaner to remove the browser cache and other stuffs to increase the performance.

Easy Way Of Deleting Files Permanently From Hard Disk In Windows..!

Files that are deleted in Windows are not really deleted–just the links to where the files are located on your hard drive are removed. Despite allowing you to use the space for other files again, the actual information is still lurking on your disk space. In other words, a knowledgeable computer user would be able to locate enough information to restore a file you wanted to keep private. Luckily, the ever-useful program CCleaner provides a method to permanently remove any deleted data from your hard drive.

Then follow these steps after the program gets installed

From the main CCleaner window, click on the “Tools” icon to the left
Select “Drive Wiper” from the list that appears in the new pane.
In this pane, select “Free Space Only” from the first drop-down box, then select the number of overwrite passes on the free space. Hit Wipe !

Note that you can always hit Shift+Delete in order to make sure that the deleted file does not get into the Recycle bin and then select the free space only or the drive name.

Also generally One pass will likely be sufficient, but if you’re really serious about security and privacy then you’ll probably like to do more passes. The time this process will take to complete is based on the number of passes you choose to make as well as the size of your hard drive.

4. Once they’re deleted, you will receive confirmation that your files or folders have been permanently deleted, and you’re done!

Now that you have the right tools for the job, you can feel confident in knowing that your data has actually been removed from your hard disk and will no longer be recovered by anyone (not even by you).
