We have had ongoing problems and limited participation using this format and are switching to something more user friendly and interactive through Parent Square.&lt;br /&gt;

You have been invited to join Parent Square and we would appreciate it if you would create your account and get started. That way we can be assured that updates are getting out.&lt;br /&gt;

Parent Square has already proven to be better in many ways- updates go out in real time (this blog update won&#39;t get to you until tomorrow), there is a calendar embedded in the site that makes it simple to see what&#39;s coming up, and people have been commenting!&lt;br /&gt;

We are looking into using a new communication system called&lt;b&gt; Parent Square.&lt;/b&gt; This is a secure website that is similar to other social media sites but it is only for our school.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
You will be able to get updates by text or email (or both), join groups that you are involved in- such as fundraising, steering committee, your child&#39;s classroom, etc.&amp;nbsp;You will also be able to view a current calendar of events and other school related information, post photos, make comments and other interactive . If you get an email invitation- please check it out.&lt;br /&gt;

We are hoping that this will make it easy for everyone to stay connected to the school community in the easiest possible format.&lt;br /&gt;

We wanted to let everyone know that Wesley is putting together a crew to do painting in the school next week. He is painting the bathrooms, Aly&#39;s classroom and hopefully the kitchen too. The more help we can round up the more painting can be done before school starts.&lt;br /&gt;
If you can help out even one day, we certainly appreciate it.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
The first day of school is Monday August 25th at 9:00 am.&lt;br /&gt;
There will be aftercare until 5:30.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
We will have our annual potluck lunch at 12:45 on the first day of school- please join us for a meet &amp;amp; greet for new &amp;amp; returning staff &amp;amp; families. Aftercare paperwork with new rates, free &amp;amp; reduced lunch applications, emergency contact updates, and parent handbooks will all be given out on the first day.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
If you have an outstanding Aftercare bill over $100 please make a payment on the first day in order to continue using the program.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Trillium&#39;s fall enrollment is currently full for all grades, but we have a few families who are still hoping for a spot. If you are not sending your child this fall please let us know ASAP so we can offer the opening to another student before the first day of school. Thank you.&lt;br /&gt;

Starting the week of April 7th, 3-5 graders will take turns participating in the test-run&lt;/div&gt;

of the new Smarter Balance test that will replace STAR testing in future years.&lt;/div&gt;

&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;
&lt;div&gt;
A letter went home about this with a link to the practice test.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/div&gt;
&lt;div&gt;
Please let your children visit this site at home so they will be familiar with the format.&lt;/div&gt;

Although the scores will not count, we will participate in this test run to help&lt;/div&gt;
&lt;div&gt;
work out any glitches with the new format.&lt;/div&gt;

This school year has been especially busy for a number of reasons, not the least of which is all the changes we have had to integrate in one school year- Common Core &amp;amp; it&#39;s spending plan, &amp;nbsp;Smarter Balance Field Testing, the new Local Control Funding Formula and it&#39;s spending plan, and Prop. 39 funds. The point is- there is a lot more to do with the same number of staff members and we need your help to get through the school year.&amp;nbsp;&lt;/div&gt;

and it&#39;s feeling like Spring.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
First, I wanted to mention how proud we are of all our students after another successful Science Night!&lt;br /&gt;
Thank you to all the parents who helped their students with projects, who came and judged, asked questions and supported the student science explorations.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
And extra congratulations to Acacia Hunt Arnold for her 3rd grade winning project- Insulation Station&lt;br /&gt;
and to Henry Stem-Faulk for his first place project Pykrete- Super Ice.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
All of our 4th and 5th graders will now be sending projects on to the Humboldt County Science Fair.&lt;br /&gt;
We will visit the projects later in the month- date TBA.&lt;br /&gt;

January is returning enrollment month for returning students and their siblings.&lt;br /&gt;
Forms went into your parent boxes last week and are being collected in the kitchen through Jan. 31.&lt;br /&gt;
Please be sure to get yours in if you want to secure a spot for next year- it looks like we may have very few spots so enrollment will be more competitive than in the last few years.&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;b&gt;It&#39;s Science Fair Time&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/b&gt;
All students are currently involved in projects and activities that lead up to our annual&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;b&gt;Science Night on Thursday February 27th.&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/b&gt;
K-2 students are doing in-class projects,&amp;nbsp;experiments and observations each week with Katie &amp;amp; Sarah.&lt;br /&gt;
3-5 graders are beginning science fair projects either independently or with a partner.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
* Each student will come up with a scientific &lt;b&gt;question&lt;/b&gt; they can answer.&lt;br /&gt;
They will then use the scientific method as follows:&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
R&lt;b&gt;esearching&lt;/b&gt; their topic, designing an &lt;b&gt;experiment &lt;/b&gt;that can answer their question, making an educated guess as to the outcome of their experiment (&lt;b&gt;hypothesis)&lt;/b&gt;, recording&lt;b&gt; data&lt;/b&gt; from their experiment, comparing their data to their hypothesis and drawing&amp;nbsp;&lt;b&gt;conclusions.&lt;/b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;b&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/b&gt;
This year we are encouraging students to incorporate water into their experiment in some way- which allows for many options since water is so versatile.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Some examples of questions they could answer are:&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Why do some things float and others sink?&lt;br /&gt;
If I add ingredients to water will it still freeze at the same temperature?&lt;br /&gt;
Why is the ocean salty?&lt;br /&gt;
What is the best way to filter water for drinking?&lt;br /&gt;
Can I make a rainbow under water?&lt;br /&gt;
Does one pound of snow melt into one pound of water?&lt;br /&gt;
What changes happen if I water plants with different kinds of water?&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
And there are many, many more questions that fall into almost every category of interest.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Please talk to your child about their projects to help them find a topic for them. All projects will need to be approved by your child&#39;s science fair advisor- Aly, Marianne or Katie. Once their topic is approved, the experiment may change but the topic will not. If you are planning an experiment at home please talk to your child&#39;s teacher about procedures, materials and data collecting. If you have questions- please ask! We are here to help.&lt;br /&gt;

and will continue on the 2nd Tuesday of each month.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Unless otherwise stated, all meetings are open and all parents are invited to attend.&lt;br /&gt;
If you ever have anything for the agenda please submit it to Marianne by the Friday before the meeting.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Next week are parent conferences.&lt;br /&gt;
These happen twice each school year and the teachers work very hard to prepare information for each family.&amp;nbsp;Attending a conference is one of the best ways you can support&amp;nbsp;your child&#39;s school progress.&lt;br /&gt;
Please sign up ASAP. Spots are filling up quickly.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Monday -Thursday of next week are also minimum days.&lt;br /&gt;
School is out at 1:10 for all students.&lt;br /&gt;
There will be aftercare until 5:30 as usual.&lt;br /&gt;
Please be aware of the potential to use a lot of extra aftercare.&lt;br /&gt;
If this is a financial hardship for your family- &amp;nbsp;please plan accordingly.&lt;br /&gt;

Liz has been a dynamic addition to the Trillium community and we will sincerely miss her.&lt;br /&gt;

However, we are pleased to welcome our new AC Director Katelyn Collins&lt;br /&gt;
to the Trillium team.&lt;br /&gt;

Katelyn is training this week with Liz during aftercare so please take a moment to introduce&lt;br /&gt;
yourself and welcome her her to the school.&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;br /&gt;
You may have noticed on the front board that it says to locate to your parent box,&lt;br /&gt;
however, we ordered new mailboxes for K-2 parents and they have not arrived just yet.&lt;br /&gt;
As soon as they do, they will be installed above the kid cubbies in Sarah&#39;s room and then you can&lt;br /&gt;
find your mailbox.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Until then, you can find free and reduced lunch applications, aftercare forms and calendars for the school year in the kitchen next to the parent information board.&lt;br /&gt;
That will be a good place all year to look for paperwork copies.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Weekly lunch menus will continue to be posted in the kitchen.&lt;br /&gt;
If you want to look ahead you can go to the Pacific Union website for a detailed monthly menu.&lt;br /&gt;

Current contact information is extremely important- usually at unexpected moments.&lt;br /&gt;
Last year&#39;s emergency cards will be in your parent boxes next week. Please look them over,&lt;br /&gt;
make changes right on the card if needed and return them in the kitchen.&lt;br /&gt;

Here are the end of the year reminders:&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
1) &lt;b&gt;Graduation&lt;/b&gt; is on Thursday June 6th from 1:30-3:00 at the school.&lt;br /&gt;
This is an all school event &amp;amp; all families &amp;amp; family members are invited.&lt;br /&gt;
There will be an award ceremony, 5th grade graduation, a finger food potluck and cake!&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
2) Monday June 10th is &lt;b&gt;Park Day&lt;/b&gt;.&lt;br /&gt;
The students will be walking on a park tour of Arcata,&lt;br /&gt;
including picnic lunch at Redwood Park.&lt;br /&gt;
Please sign and return trip slips.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
3) The End of the Year Camping Trip to &lt;b&gt;Pamplin Grove&lt;/b&gt; is next Tuesday-Thursday.&lt;br /&gt;
These are also the last 3 days of school.&lt;br /&gt;
Once we leave school on Tuesday we are not meeting back at the school.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Please check the &lt;b&gt;lost &amp;amp; found&lt;/b&gt; for clothes and personal items.&lt;br /&gt;
Also take home everything from your kids cubby on Monday.&lt;br /&gt;

One last thing- the flu season has been hitting us hard.&lt;br /&gt;
Right now we have been averaging 5 absences every day with symptoms ranging from&lt;br /&gt;
high fever &amp;amp; sore throat to vomiting, cough and rash.&lt;br /&gt;
Please be sure that your kids have extra clothes for the frequent changes in weather.&lt;br /&gt;
A change of clothes in case of accidental wetness is always a good idea this time of year.&lt;br /&gt;

Trillium Running Club is beginning again as training for the Foggy Bottom Milk Run on Sunday March 10th. Everyone is welcome to join. Students may join the school running club even if they are not planning to be in the race, however, race participation is encouraged. Look for information about registering for the race in your parent mailboxes. Sarah is the head of this group, so please direct questions to her. Parents are invited to run with the club and in the race as well. Running will begin promptly at 9:00 in all weather- so please send appropriate clothing for your student to change after running. Regular running will take place on Mondays and Fridays beginning next week.&lt;br /&gt;

&lt;b&gt;About Swimming&lt;/b&gt;: Our annual PE unit on swimming will be at the Arcata Pool again this year. All students are required to participate in swimming lessons regardless of prior experience. On the first day students will be grouped according to ability and will work in these groups for the 8 class series. We will be taking the bus to and from swimming so we do not need parent drivers, however, we need at least one male chaperone to help in the boys locker room. Female staff members are never allowed in this area, but the younger boys do need assistance. Swimming dates are January 29 &amp;amp; 31, then February 5, 8, 12, 14, 26 &amp;amp; 28 from 11:00-12:00. Please let us know if you are available. Thanks!&lt;br /&gt;

3-5 graders are beginning their &lt;b&gt;Science Projects&lt;/b&gt; that will conclude with for our school Science Night on February 28. &amp;nbsp;Most students will need support at home in order to complete a successful experiment. Students are currently brainstorming ideas for their projects, and need to have a working project underway ASAP. Aly and Marianne are available to answer questions or provide support throughout this process. Please ask for help if you need it.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
January is &lt;b&gt;returning enrollment&lt;/b&gt; month. Returning enrollment gives priority to current students and their school age siblings.&amp;nbsp;&amp;nbsp;Look for forms in your parent box and return them in the kitchen by January 31 to guarantee a space for next fall.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;b&gt;About attendance&lt;/b&gt;: Regular, timely attendance is extremely important for all students. Please make every effort to get your children to school on time so they do not miss out on important morning meetings or instruction. Thank you.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
If you know your student is going to be out of town or has an extended illness, please sign up for independent study. This helps students to keep up on school work and allows us to mark students present for those days. Please try to give us at least one day advance notice to make an IS packet.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
If your student is going to be absent, we do appreciate a call to let us know they are not coming.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
If you are just coming late, don&#39;t forget to call before 9:30 if you need to order a school lunch.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
If your child has a fever, is vomiting, has a severe cough or any other possibly contagious symptom, please keep them home. If they were sick during the night it is best to wait a day to be sure. If they are on medication, 24 hrs. usually assures they are no longer contagious. Thanks for your consideration.&lt;br /&gt;

We have 3 field trips in the next 2 weeks and we need parent drivers.&lt;br /&gt;
Next week we are scheduled to go to HSU on both Wednesday and Friday at 1:00&lt;br /&gt;
to participate in a PE lessons given by HSU Kinesiology students.&lt;br /&gt;
This will be the HSU students&#39; final project and they will be graded on their performance.&lt;br /&gt;
Please help us transport the children to and from campus- the lessons will last around one hour.&lt;br /&gt;
Sign-ups are in the kitchen. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
Next, on Tuesday Dec. 11th,&lt;br /&gt;
the K-2 class will try again to get to the Natural History Museum by 10:00.&lt;br /&gt;
They are scheduled for a presentation on skulls as part of their unit studies.&lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;
We understand that everyone is busy, but we hope that you will try to find time to help get the kids out in the community during this wet and dark time of year. &lt;br /&gt;
&lt;br /&gt;

We are open and getting ready to begin school on Monday August 27th.
We are excited to see everyone again and welcome our new families and students.

Again- please do let us know ASAP if your student is not attending this year.
We have a very active waiting list and would like to be sure everyone can come to the first day of school. Thanks.

Anyone who has expressed interest in summer work trade- now is the time.

There are many area that need attending to, including the garden, the libraries, the kitchen, Sarah&#39;s classroom, Katie&#39;s classroom (formerly the Magic room), and the completion of our new aftercare space (formerly Katie&#39;s room).

If you are not available during daytime hours please call or email and we can arrange access at your convenience.

Speaking of Aftercare, this year Kindergarten will be released at 2:10 and there will be Kindergarten only aftercare available from 2:10-3:10. Regular aftercare will begin at 3:10 starting the first day of school.

All families MUST pay down their aftercare bill in order to use the program in the fall. It has come to my attention that the reminder letters didn&#39;t go out with the final bills, so this is your reminder. 

If your balance is over $100 you must pay at least half of your bill and make immediate payment arrangements on the first day of school. We cannot carry large balances- our budget and our district will not allow it. Please read your aftercare contracts carefully. 

And for those of you who have dutifully made monthly payments- we sincerely thank you. 

Another update to note is that, due to budget cuts, we will have some unfortunate reductions in our supplementary staff hours. This means that parent volunteerism will be more important than ever to keep things running day to day. There will be a list of volunteer jobs available on the first day of school and we ask everyone to commit a minimum of 2 hours a month to Trillium. For working families there are many options that are flexible and can even happen from your home. We are working on additional aftercare discounts for families that will sign a monthly commitment agreement. Look for details in your paperwork packet on the first day of school.

Lastly, the first day of school will include our annual meet &amp; greet lunch potluck. Families are invited to join us for lunch at 12:45. Paperwork packets will be available for pick up and staff members will be here to answer any questions.
