Celebrate New Book God vs. Gay? The Religious Case for Equality with ‘LGBT Religious ‘Town Fair’ October 27; National Tour to Follow

(New York, New York – September 15, 2011): On October 27, 2011, from 7pm to 9pm, at the LGBT Center in New York (208 West 13^th Street), over twenty leading gay religious and media organizations will gather to “take religion back from the religious right.” The event will celebrate the publication of a new book, God vs. Gay? The Religious Case for Equality (Beacon Press, 2011), by nationally-known columnist and activist Jay Michaelson (www.jaymichaelson.net), which argues that our shared religious values support, rather than oppose, full equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people. The book has been called “a salvo in the case for equality” by Publisher’s Weekly.

“This is a beautiful, soulful book,” said Dr. Sharon Groves, director of the Faith & Religion program at the Human Rights Campaign, one of the sponsors of the October 27 event. “Michaelson charts a journey from rejection to full acceptance, from religious alienation to spiritual wholeness. It will inspire anyone who has felt abandoned by their faith and rejected for who they are.”

The event on October 27 will feature a unique “town fair” of over twenty co-sponsoring organizations, such as GLAAD, HRC, Faith in America, the Jewish Daily Forward, and SoulForce, presenting a unique opportunity for LGBT faith and rights activists to meet and network. It will also feature short addresses from leaders of the LGBT equality movement.

This year we are celebrating our fifth year of helping homeless LGBTQ youth and young adults in New York City to safely transition out of the shelter system and grow into independent, positive, and productive adults.

We have been open continuously for 1,826 days/nights - a feat that has only been possible because of our Trinity Place family: the hundreds of volunteers, donors, and supporters who have helped to make Trinity Place what it is today.

Pieces of Dreams

"Pieces of Dreams" is a musical theatre experience, telling the story of a man's journey. As a child, he was bullied for being "different". Eventually, hardened by hostility and violence, he became a bully himself. While serving four years as a Navy Hospital Corpsman during the VietNam era, like many young people during that time, he had a spiritual awakening. The experience lifted him out of self-hatred and anger that had largely resulted from a lifelong struggle with his sexuality. He joined the Evangelical movement and held onto the false hope that was promised without wavering - that God would make him a heterosexual. After twenty years running an active inner-city and international ministry, serving real people with real needs, he came to the logical conclusion: condemning LGBT people is all wrong. "Coming out" has changed everything, and what were once his dreams have become reality.

Let's help LGBT young people in crisis. Come to "Pieces Of Dreams", a Benefit Concert for Trinity Place Shelter, Monday May 23 in New York City at theBroadway Comedy Club.

Twas the night before Christmas...

Twas the night before Christmas and all throughout Trinity Place Shelter, not a homeless LGBTQ youth was stirring nor was a mouse! The youth all slept snug in their cots with full stockings of goodies, presents, gift cards donated by church and community members. A perfectly decorated Christmas Tree lighting up the night, donated by Trinity HS GSA. Stomachs filled with an array of holiday food and individual-sized homemade bread loaves baked by a church member. Donated blankets from a gay Fire Island hotel. Aside each cot was a stash of new warm woolen mittens, hats and scarves handmade by queer knitters in Ithaca and Lutheran women in Wisconsin.

The shelter MSW intern sleeping overnight as the volunteer shelter monitor. The shelter director at home frenetically trying to finish annual reports with the volunteer coordinator aiding him from London as is a shelter board member from rural PA. The outreach coordinator deep in thank you note writing, the shelter executive director busy adding touches of holiday spirit wherever she goes. The shelter treasurer dutifully typing end of year donor receipts. The shelter webmaster in Chicago skillfully posting photos of our youth's Christmas joy. Shelter social worker in Baltimore and shelter monitor in San Francisco, pausing from non-stop work for a rare night of rest. Shelter volunteers, donors and friends, angels of ours who have earned their "wings," fulfilled from their boundless generous contributions. All overflowing with love, joy and gratitude for the support and "Christmas promise" of countless...

When Life Gives You White Carrots, Make Soup

Last Wednesday the door buzzed at Trinity Place and I hurried to open it. I was there to drop off dinner. Outside, standing in the rain, was a farmer from the local CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) with a donation: two large boxes of white carrots, green tops intact.

White carrots are not an attractive vegetable - they look like parsnips or enormous mealworms - which is probably why CSA shareholders rejected them and they ended up in our kitchen. "Sorry about that," the farmer said ruefully. He did look sorry; he also looked exhausted after a long day of picking and hauling. "Just do the best you can with 'em," he said.

Hands on hips, I stared at the carrots, thinking of other late-summer nights when I have come to the shelter to find an overabundance of some odd vegetable rotting in the box because it's way too much of a good thing.

I am a reduce, reuse, recycle kind of girl, but in giving us a zillion pounds of white carrots, this donor left us with a problem. Hold your arms in a circle with fingertips touching - now fill that imaginary bowl to the brim, twice, and you'll get a sense of the problem.

Just then a new admit came into the kitchen with our new social work intern, Wendy. Introductions were made, and then we all stared at the carrots. We didn't even have a vegetable peeler. Wendy and I washed one and took a bite: tough and tasteless.

Next, a longer-term resident whom I'll call T walked in. When T looked at the carrots he was more positive; he saw curry stew and thick creamy soup. The carrots got him reminiscing about the days he made bread from yeast starter. "I wish we had more time to cook here," he said. "By the time we get our beds out and showers taken and relax a little there's no time to cook." Hot Pockets are the go-to food when you're ravenous. Arriving "home" at 9 p.m. doesn't leave much time or energy for extras, like cooking.

As we spoke, I twisted the greens off the carrots. Nestled in the box we found five fat, round zucchinis. "Mmm, good sautéed in butter," said the ever-positive T. I decided to take some carrots home and try to make something to bring back.

I found a few recipes for white carrot soup online but no photos because, as one blogger explained, white carrot soup does not make for an appetizing picture. As I peeled carrots in my kitchen I dreamed of the day when we'd have the time and resources to open the shelter earlier; to install a fully equipped kitchen; to hold cooking and nutrition classes with the residents; and to learn to bake yeast bread from T. I vowed to at least schedule a bread-baking day in the near future.

It was great to be back at TPS after a summer mostly away. The best way to learn how to help out is enter into the flow of shelter life, even if just for one hour.

Exactly 4 years ago tonight, June 12, 2006 Trinity Place officially opened and has been open every night since providing a home for at least 10 of New York City's homeless, LGBTQ youth/young adults...due exclusively to your and others' tireless work, unrelenting efforts, continuous support, thoughts and prayers.

For the 1,460 nights of shelter, safety, healing, grace and peace you and your committment have helped create, provide and sustain...I offer my deepest gratitude.

Here's to a long future of hope and harboring. Thanks again.
